00:06:21.54\00:06:23.95 All right. So pull out your Bibles. 00:06:23.98\00:06:25.88 Let's turn to 1 Samuel. 00:06:25.91\00:06:28.72 We're still in 1 Samuel and Chapter 17. 00:06:28.75\00:06:34.06 1 Samuel 17. 00:06:34.09\00:06:36.02 While you're flipping there, 00:06:36.06\00:06:37.39 I've always wanted to do special music at GYC 00:06:37.43\00:06:39.19 and nobody's ever invited me. 00:06:39.23\00:06:41.36 So that was my opportunity to shine. 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.03 I should have warmed up more, huh? 00:06:47.14\00:06:50.07 1 Samuel 17. 00:06:50.11\00:06:53.07 We're gonna talk about David this morning. 00:06:53.11\00:06:56.48 Bow your heads with me as we pray. 00:06:56.51\00:07:00.18 Our Loving Father, 00:07:00.22\00:07:01.55 we are so thankful for the gift of life. 00:07:01.58\00:07:03.69 We're thankful that we've made it 00:07:03.72\00:07:05.05 into this New Year. 00:07:05.09\00:07:06.42 We're thankful that You have preserved us 00:07:06.45\00:07:08.02 and that You have a purpose in mind for us. 00:07:08.06\00:07:10.66 As we delve into scripture this morning, 00:07:10.69\00:07:12.26 we ask that the Holy Spirit would be our teacher. 00:07:12.29\00:07:15.16 We ask that as this is holy time 00:07:15.20\00:07:17.40 that we would have an experience of holiness 00:07:17.43\00:07:19.60 that we've never had before. 00:07:19.63\00:07:21.40 Lord that our walk with You would be closer and deeper 00:07:21.44\00:07:25.01 as a result of coming 00:07:25.04\00:07:26.37 into this time of worship and prayer. 00:07:26.41\00:07:28.48 We pray these things in Your name, amen. 00:07:28.51\00:07:31.31 1 Samuel Chapter 17. 00:07:31.35\00:07:35.12 You know the outline of the story, right? 00:07:35.15\00:07:38.15 It's one of our childhood favorites 00:07:38.19\00:07:41.36 'cause you got this little boy named David 00:07:41.39\00:07:43.56 and he's there and he does this mighty feat. 00:07:43.59\00:07:48.83 See, the Philistines 00:07:48.86\00:07:50.20 were not always this formidable, 00:07:50.23\00:07:53.57 they were always formidable, 00:07:53.60\00:07:54.94 but they weren't always this like 00:07:54.97\00:07:56.30 impossible situation. 00:07:56.34\00:07:57.81 I think one of the saddest chapters 00:07:57.84\00:07:59.34 in the Bible is 1 Samuel Chapter 4 00:07:59.37\00:08:03.08 where you have the Israelites 00:08:03.11\00:08:06.92 come up to battle the Philistines, 00:08:06.95\00:08:08.55 they don't ask God before they go, 00:08:08.58\00:08:11.09 and then the Philistines come up there 00:08:11.12\00:08:12.79 and the Israelites get a little bit of a beating, 00:08:12.82\00:08:16.73 they lose like 4,000 of their men, 00:08:16.76\00:08:18.39 they run back and they like what happened, 00:08:18.43\00:08:20.13 they try to regroup, and they decide, 00:08:20.16\00:08:22.06 you know, we're gonna take 00:08:22.10\00:08:23.43 the Ark of the Covenant with us into battle 00:08:23.47\00:08:26.03 because they think back to the stories 00:08:26.07\00:08:27.80 from back in the day, 00:08:27.84\00:08:29.17 and when the Ark of the Covenant was there, 00:08:29.20\00:08:30.71 the Israelites were winning, so they're like, 00:08:30.74\00:08:32.27 "We're gonna get the ark, 00:08:32.31\00:08:33.64 and we're gonna be winning now." 00:08:33.68\00:08:35.51 So they go and they take the ark, 00:08:35.54\00:08:37.38 again not consulting God, 00:08:37.41\00:08:39.08 and secondly, treating the Ark of the Covenant 00:08:39.11\00:08:41.18 like it were an idol. 00:08:41.22\00:08:43.18 As if just the presence of this physical thing 00:08:43.22\00:08:46.55 would mean that God is present. 00:08:46.59\00:08:47.92 So they bring the Ark of the Covenant 00:08:47.96\00:08:49.82 and there's a huge loud shout among the Israelites 00:08:49.86\00:08:53.36 when they see the ark come in 00:08:53.40\00:08:54.73 such that the Philistines are terrified. 00:08:54.76\00:08:58.90 They're like, "Oh, no. What are we gonna do? 00:08:58.93\00:09:00.77 The Ark of the Covenant is now 00:09:00.80\00:09:02.20 in the midst of the town of Israel." 00:09:02.24\00:09:04.37 And they've heard the stories too. 00:09:04.41\00:09:06.57 That back in the day when the ark shows up, 00:09:06.61\00:09:08.91 it's game over. 00:09:08.94\00:09:10.85 But they say, "Hey, 00:09:10.88\00:09:12.21 we got to quit ourselves like men. 00:09:12.25\00:09:14.12 You're gonna go down fighting." 00:09:14.15\00:09:17.55 And in spite of their fear, 00:09:17.59\00:09:20.06 this is the Philistines in Chapter 4. 00:09:20.09\00:09:23.09 In spite of the fact that they are so scared, 00:09:23.12\00:09:26.23 they go out to fight. 00:09:26.26\00:09:29.93 And it's one of the saddest chapters for me 00:09:29.96\00:09:31.87 because these heathens 00:09:31.90\00:09:35.40 who recognize the power of the God of the Israelites, 00:09:35.44\00:09:39.67 but went out in spite of their fear 00:09:39.71\00:09:41.28 in order to protect their families, 00:09:41.31\00:09:44.55 they end up defeating the Israelites. 00:09:44.58\00:09:49.55 I believe it's 30,000 people slain. 00:09:49.58\00:09:54.42 Eli is old at that time 00:09:54.46\00:09:55.89 and his sons Hophni and Phinehas 00:09:55.92\00:09:58.83 had gone with the ark. 00:09:58.86\00:10:00.23 They died defending the Ark of the Covenant. 00:10:00.26\00:10:04.50 Better if they had lived to defend it. 00:10:04.53\00:10:08.80 So when word gets back, Eli's sitting and is waiting, 00:10:08.84\00:10:12.54 trying to hear what happened, expecting terrible news, 00:10:12.57\00:10:16.11 and the news finally gets to him, 00:10:16.14\00:10:17.85 and it's bad news. 00:10:17.88\00:10:20.15 The news is that the Israelites have been defeated. 00:10:20.18\00:10:22.15 That is sad. 00:10:22.18\00:10:24.52 The news is that your sons have been killed 00:10:24.55\00:10:27.66 and that is sad, 00:10:27.69\00:10:29.42 but you know what breaks Eli's heart? 00:10:29.46\00:10:31.33 And the Ark of the Covenant has been taken. 00:10:34.70\00:10:39.50 This old man loses his bearings, 00:10:39.53\00:10:41.40 he falls and breaks his neck. 00:10:41.44\00:10:43.41 Phinehas's wife, 00:10:47.44\00:10:49.24 Eli's daughter-in-law is pregnant at the time. 00:10:49.28\00:10:52.28 She hears the tumult what's the news, 00:10:52.31\00:10:55.85 and she finds out that Israel has been defeated. 00:10:55.88\00:11:00.56 Your husband and brother-in-law are dead. 00:11:00.59\00:11:04.83 And the Ark of the Covenant has been taken. 00:11:04.86\00:11:08.43 At the news of the ark being taken, 00:11:08.46\00:11:09.96 she goes into labor. 00:11:10.00\00:11:14.14 And she births a child and, you know, 00:11:14.17\00:11:15.84 there's a fourth piece of news for her 00:11:15.87\00:11:17.21 your father-in-law is dead 00:11:17.24\00:11:18.87 at the news of the ark being taken. 00:11:18.91\00:11:22.71 She goes into spontaneous labor. 00:11:22.74\00:11:25.31 She births a child and names him Ichabod, 00:11:25.35\00:11:29.45 for the glory is departed. 00:11:29.48\00:11:32.45 It's one of the saddest chapters 00:11:32.49\00:11:33.82 in the Bible I find. 00:11:33.86\00:11:36.79 She dies after giving birth to her child. 00:11:36.83\00:11:42.43 So when we get to Chapter 17, 00:11:42.46\00:11:45.17 this is a background of how the Philistines gained 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.10 the kind of courage that they had, 00:11:48.14\00:11:50.77 like the defiance that they had against God. 00:11:50.81\00:11:54.08 And I wonder if in our lives, 00:11:54.11\00:11:57.31 we do things that give the enemy courage 00:11:57.35\00:12:01.52 to treat us a certain way. 00:12:01.55\00:12:03.02 Not because God isn't great, 00:12:06.05\00:12:07.39 but because of the way that we've acted 00:12:07.42\00:12:09.09 the fool in the past. 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.33 Chapter 17, let's read together. 00:12:11.36\00:12:16.03 Verse 4, "There went out a champion 00:12:16.06\00:12:18.40 out of the camp of the Philistines, 00:12:18.43\00:12:19.87 named Goliath, of Gath, 00:12:19.90\00:12:22.00 whose height was six cubits and a span." 00:12:22.04\00:12:24.31 And then he tells us 00:12:24.34\00:12:25.77 that he had all of this armor on him. 00:12:25.81\00:12:28.78 In verse 8, "He stood and cried 00:12:28.81\00:12:31.38 unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, 00:12:31.41\00:12:33.62 'Why are you come up to set your battle in array? 00:12:33.65\00:12:35.68 Am not I a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? 00:12:35.72\00:12:39.12 Choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. 00:12:39.15\00:12:41.99 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, 00:12:42.02\00:12:44.16 then will we be your servants, but if I prevail against him, 00:12:44.19\00:12:47.16 and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.76 and serve us.'" 00:12:49.80\00:12:51.13 So this was gonna be somewhat of a battle by proxy. 00:12:51.17\00:12:54.84 You pick one person and send him out here, 00:12:54.87\00:12:56.84 we'll pick we have our one person 00:12:56.87\00:12:58.37 and we got him out here and let's see who wins. 00:12:58.41\00:13:02.98 It kind of reminds me of the Book of Job 00:13:03.01\00:13:06.55 where, you know, 00:13:06.58\00:13:09.15 God is up in heaven and Lucifer goes up there 00:13:09.18\00:13:12.75 and he's like, you know, 00:13:12.79\00:13:14.12 God's like, "Where you've been?" 00:13:14.16\00:13:15.49 I'm roaming about. 00:13:15.52\00:13:16.86 Lucifer says, "I'm roaming about on my territory." 00:13:16.89\00:13:18.23 And God's like, "Well, actually, 00:13:18.26\00:13:20.90 have you seen my servant Job?" 00:13:20.93\00:13:23.53 And that means yes, 00:13:23.57\00:13:24.90 you may be claiming that as your territory, 00:13:24.93\00:13:26.27 but I have a representative down there. 00:13:26.30\00:13:29.50 And because Job is there, 00:13:29.54\00:13:31.91 Lucifer can't lay claim to the entire earth. 00:13:31.94\00:13:36.78 Because you are there, 00:13:36.81\00:13:39.55 the devil can't claim this entire earth. 00:13:39.58\00:13:42.55 Amen? 00:13:42.58\00:13:44.69 It's kind of a battle by proxy. 00:13:44.72\00:13:46.05 God is like, "You are my representative." 00:13:46.09\00:13:49.06 And when you're winning... 00:13:49.09\00:13:52.29 Well, God is always winning, 00:13:52.33\00:13:53.66 but we wanna be winning with Him. 00:13:53.70\00:13:55.03 Amen? 00:13:55.06\00:13:58.87 Verse 10, "The Philistine said, 00:13:58.90\00:14:01.30 'I defy the armies of Israel this day, 00:14:01.34\00:14:05.11 give me a man, that we may fight together.'" 00:14:05.14\00:14:10.28 Verse 11 the response of Israel. 00:14:10.31\00:14:12.98 It's kind of like 00:14:13.01\00:14:14.35 what the Philistines were like in Chapter 4. 00:14:14.38\00:14:17.49 "When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistines, 00:14:17.52\00:14:20.29 they were dismayed, and greatly afraid." 00:14:20.32\00:14:23.96 This is the backdrop. 00:14:23.99\00:14:26.80 The Philistines are there, the Israelites are fearful, 00:14:26.83\00:14:29.30 nobody's gonna go out and fight. 00:14:29.33\00:14:31.63 David get sent by his dad. 00:14:31.67\00:14:33.07 His dad says, "David, go check on your brothers." 00:14:33.10\00:14:35.00 His three older brothers had gone out 00:14:35.04\00:14:36.44 to battle with Saul. 00:14:36.47\00:14:37.81 Go check on your brothers. 00:14:37.84\00:14:39.17 This was his mission. 00:14:39.21\00:14:41.04 He came from taking care of the sheep. 00:14:41.08\00:14:44.45 Actually David in the previous chapter 00:14:44.48\00:14:48.38 had been called to Saul's palace 00:14:48.42\00:14:50.59 to play music for Saul, 00:14:50.62\00:14:52.85 but apparently after playing music for Saul 00:14:52.89\00:14:54.96 and being in the palace, 00:14:54.99\00:14:56.32 he went back to 10 sheep. 00:14:56.36\00:14:57.96 Now how many of you would go from a palace 00:14:57.99\00:15:00.23 out to the wilderness to take care of sheep, 00:15:00.26\00:15:03.33 but that's David. 00:15:03.37\00:15:05.50 And he's out there tending the sheep. 00:15:05.53\00:15:06.87 And his dad says, "Go and check on your brothers." 00:15:06.90\00:15:10.07 And he goes, and when he gets there, 00:15:10.11\00:15:11.47 he finds that there's this conundrum 00:15:11.51\00:15:14.64 that's going on where God's people are scared. 00:15:14.68\00:15:18.78 And for David, he's like, "Do you know who God is? 00:15:18.81\00:15:23.42 You're afraid of this Philistine, 00:15:23.45\00:15:24.79 God is bigger than this guy, right?" 00:15:24.82\00:15:29.12 And his brothers think that he's there just, 00:15:29.16\00:15:31.06 you know, seeking mischief. 00:15:31.09\00:15:32.43 They're like, "Why are you here, David? 00:15:32.46\00:15:33.80 You just wanna be part of the action." 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.66 And David was like, "Nah, is there not a cause. 00:15:35.70\00:15:37.80 There's a reason why I'm here." 00:15:37.83\00:15:40.10 We're getting to the part of the story 00:15:40.14\00:15:42.10 where I wanna end up. 00:15:42.14\00:15:44.67 You know, they tell Saul, 00:15:44.71\00:15:46.57 Saul tries to give him his armor. 00:15:46.61\00:15:48.04 David says, "No, thank you." 00:15:48.08\00:15:49.41 There are very many lessons in the story, 00:15:49.44\00:15:50.78 amen, we're just, we're brushing 00:15:50.81\00:15:52.48 through a bunch of them. 00:15:52.51\00:15:53.85 He says, "No, you know, 00:15:53.88\00:15:55.22 basically I got a fight in my own armor." 00:15:55.25\00:15:56.92 So he picks up five smooth stones 00:15:56.95\00:15:59.55 and he puts them in his little sling bag. 00:15:59.59\00:16:01.56 And he goes out there and he's ready to fight. 00:16:01.59\00:16:03.76 Verse 42, 00:16:07.03\00:16:09.36 "When the Philistine looked about, 00:16:09.40\00:16:10.77 and saw David, he disdained him, 00:16:10.80\00:16:13.17 for he was but a youth, and ruddy, 00:16:13.20\00:16:16.27 and of a fair countenance. 00:16:16.30\00:16:17.91 And the Philistine said to David, 00:16:17.94\00:16:19.27 "Am I a dog, 00:16:19.31\00:16:20.88 that thou comest to me with staves?" 00:16:20.91\00:16:23.48 And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 00:16:23.51\00:16:27.18 The Philistine said to David, "Come to me, 00:16:27.22\00:16:29.42 and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, 00:16:29.45\00:16:31.92 and the beasts of the field." 00:16:31.95\00:16:34.96 And Goliath has reason to say this 00:16:34.99\00:16:36.56 'cause he's huge, 00:16:36.59\00:16:37.93 and he's covered in all this armor, 00:16:37.96\00:16:39.89 and he's protected. 00:16:39.93\00:16:41.96 And he's a man of war, 00:16:42.00\00:16:43.33 and he's been fighting for many years, 00:16:43.37\00:16:46.67 but "David says to the Philistine, 00:16:46.70\00:16:48.57 'Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, 00:16:48.60\00:16:51.34 and with a shield, 00:16:51.37\00:16:52.91 but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, 00:16:52.94\00:16:55.24 the God of the armies of Israel, 00:16:55.28\00:16:56.81 whom thou hast defied.'" 00:16:56.85\00:16:58.75 He says, "I'm not coming to you in my own strength, 00:16:58.78\00:17:01.18 it's not because I'm something important 00:17:01.22\00:17:03.59 or I'm something mighty. 00:17:03.62\00:17:05.05 I'm coming to you because my God is great. 00:17:05.09\00:17:09.72 "This day the Lord will deliver thee 00:17:09.76\00:17:11.99 into mine hand, 00:17:12.03\00:17:13.36 and I, little David, I will smite thee, 00:17:13.40\00:17:18.83 and take thine head from thee, 00:17:18.87\00:17:21.44 and I will give the carcass of the host of the Philistines 00:17:21.47\00:17:24.11 this day unto the fowls of the air, 00:17:24.14\00:17:25.84 and to the wild beasts of the earth, 00:17:25.87\00:17:27.54 that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel." 00:17:27.58\00:17:31.31 Oh, Goliath has had it. 00:17:34.35\00:17:37.49 You puny little Israelite 00:17:37.52\00:17:44.23 talking to me like that. 00:17:44.26\00:17:49.16 Apparently, he is so enraged 00:17:49.20\00:17:52.07 by these confident words 00:17:52.10\00:17:54.17 from this little boy 00:17:54.20\00:17:57.64 that he pulls back his helmet. 00:17:57.67\00:18:01.94 And he goes to rush David. 00:18:01.98\00:18:04.25 "It came to pass, when the Philistine arose, " 00:18:08.08\00:18:10.15 in verse 48, 00:18:10.19\00:18:11.65 "and came, and drew nigh to meet David, " 00:18:11.69\00:18:14.26 that David ran away? 00:18:14.29\00:18:15.86 David ran away? 00:18:20.36\00:18:21.83 Okay. 00:18:21.86\00:18:23.60 "That David hastened, 00:18:23.63\00:18:26.23 ran toward the army to meet the Philistine." 00:18:26.27\00:18:32.97 I love the words that it uses here. 00:18:33.01\00:18:34.61 He didn't just run toward Goliath. 00:18:34.64\00:18:37.28 He ran toward an entire army, right? 00:18:37.31\00:18:41.28 To meet this one Philistine 00:18:41.32\00:18:42.65 who's representing all this host. 00:18:42.68\00:18:46.39 He puts his hand in his bag 00:18:46.42\00:18:47.76 and pulls out that stone and... 00:18:47.79\00:18:51.56 And in the children's story, it says, 00:18:51.59\00:18:53.23 whizz went the stone as it flung through the air. 00:18:53.26\00:18:56.50 Hits the giant in the forehead. 00:18:59.87\00:19:02.40 And the Philistines see their champion 00:19:02.44\00:19:05.11 teeter and totter. 00:19:05.14\00:19:07.24 And they're amazed, they're like, 00:19:07.28\00:19:09.34 what's going on right now? 00:19:09.38\00:19:12.18 Apparently, the force with which that stone hit 00:19:12.21\00:19:15.68 the forehead of the giant 00:19:15.72\00:19:17.99 caused traumatic brain injury. 00:19:18.02\00:19:22.52 And he starts to lose consciousness. 00:19:22.56\00:19:25.69 He gets dizzy. 00:19:25.73\00:19:27.06 He's about and down he falls to the ground. 00:19:27.10\00:19:31.80 You can imagine the shock and amazement 00:19:31.83\00:19:35.54 in both the camp of the Israelites 00:19:35.57\00:19:37.21 and the Philistines. 00:19:37.24\00:19:40.11 The giant fell. 00:19:40.14\00:19:42.74 David. 00:19:46.92\00:19:48.25 I'm not a gun person. 00:19:51.79\00:19:53.49 I, as in, I don't own a firearm 00:19:53.52\00:19:58.39 and I don't like firearms because they scare me. 00:19:58.43\00:20:02.40 I'm not making 00:20:02.43\00:20:03.77 a political statement right now. 00:20:03.80\00:20:05.13 Okay, I know this is, 00:20:05.17\00:20:06.50 like guns in America is like politics. 00:20:06.53\00:20:07.94 No, I'm just, I wanna say something about guns 00:20:07.97\00:20:10.31 and I wanted to give my personal disclaimer, 00:20:10.34\00:20:13.48 but I have friends who are gun people. 00:20:13.51\00:20:16.41 Can we be friends with people we disagree with? 00:20:16.44\00:20:19.28 Yeah, okay. Yeah. 00:20:19.31\00:20:21.05 I have friends who are gun people, 00:20:21.08\00:20:22.42 some very close to me are gun people, 00:20:22.45\00:20:26.09 and they love their guns. 00:20:26.12\00:20:28.32 And in conversation, you know, I'll ask like, 00:20:28.36\00:20:30.99 so tell me about guns and they tell me about guns 00:20:31.03\00:20:33.33 and I don't understand the half of it, 00:20:33.36\00:20:34.70 but something I caught 00:20:34.73\00:20:36.87 was that when you're training 00:20:36.90\00:20:39.50 to discharge a firearm, 00:20:39.53\00:20:43.87 they teach you that, 00:20:43.91\00:20:45.64 if you're in a situation 00:20:45.67\00:20:47.48 where you're trying to defend yourself, 00:20:47.51\00:20:49.41 you aim for the center of visible mass, okay? 00:20:49.44\00:20:55.38 So that means in a human being 00:20:55.42\00:20:59.52 where is the larger center of visible mass. 00:20:59.55\00:21:03.53 Right? 00:21:03.56\00:21:04.89 This is your torso chest area, this part. 00:21:04.93\00:21:08.26 So, you know, sometimes people are like, 00:21:08.30\00:21:10.00 "Oh, why didn't he just shoot the person in the knee?" 00:21:10.03\00:21:12.43 Well, because it's harder to shoot 00:21:12.47\00:21:14.04 someone in the knee 00:21:14.07\00:21:15.40 than it is to shoot someone in the torso, okay? 00:21:15.44\00:21:18.67 And if you're trying to defend yourself 00:21:18.71\00:21:20.58 and what you're using as a firearm, 00:21:20.61\00:21:22.68 you're not gonna aim for the knee 00:21:22.71\00:21:24.48 which guess if you're like super, super-duper trained 00:21:24.51\00:21:27.55 you can aim for the knee and like bloop, 00:21:27.58\00:21:28.92 and then they like they're hobbling, 00:21:28.95\00:21:30.29 but later they can still hobble to you, 00:21:30.32\00:21:31.72 and then you got to shoot the other knee, and ended up. 00:21:31.75\00:21:33.09 I don't know, but anyways, you got to aim for 00:21:33.12\00:21:37.46 apparently, you got to aim for this part. 00:21:37.49\00:21:40.63 David takes his sling 00:21:40.66\00:21:45.43 and he does not aim 00:21:45.47\00:21:47.14 for the largest center of visible mass. 00:21:47.17\00:21:52.84 He goes for the head. 00:21:52.87\00:21:57.51 Not just the face, but the forehead. 00:21:57.55\00:22:03.52 Okay, so I'm sure most of us are not gun people, 00:22:03.55\00:22:07.02 but let's try to imagine 00:22:07.06\00:22:08.92 how hard that probably is, right? 00:22:08.96\00:22:12.03 Because you could not just miss the body, 00:22:12.06\00:22:14.86 you could miss all together 00:22:14.90\00:22:16.23 and it goes up over the head, right? 00:22:16.26\00:22:19.27 But he aims for and it's the ideal spot. 00:22:19.30\00:22:22.90 He hits him smack in the forehead, 00:22:22.94\00:22:24.74 and it does the deed. 00:22:24.77\00:22:26.11 Giant falls down. 00:22:26.14\00:22:27.48 He gets Goliath sword and cuts off his head 00:22:27.51\00:22:29.74 like he promised he would, 00:22:29.78\00:22:31.41 but the fact that David managed to hit 00:22:31.45\00:22:35.55 the giant in the forehead. 00:22:35.58\00:22:40.19 That points to some level of skill. 00:22:40.22\00:22:43.56 Yes. 00:22:43.59\00:22:45.69 I mean, this points to like some level of crazy skill 00:22:45.73\00:22:49.90 because he didn't just hit his object, 00:22:49.93\00:22:52.77 he did it running. 00:22:52.80\00:22:55.47 So he's running towards the giant. 00:22:55.50\00:22:57.71 He grabs his sling. 00:22:57.74\00:22:59.11 I'm like, "Dude, how you aim even like..." 00:22:59.14\00:23:01.64 And he's like, 00:23:01.68\00:23:03.01 so probably the velocity of him running helps, 00:23:03.04\00:23:05.71 you know, propel that device into the forehead of the giant 00:23:05.75\00:23:09.25 until it says it's sunk into his forehead. 00:23:09.28\00:23:11.89 I imagine David everyday he's out there, 00:23:15.32\00:23:18.03 tending sheep with his slingshot, 00:23:18.06\00:23:23.00 aiming, 00:23:27.64\00:23:30.97 aiming, 00:23:31.01\00:23:33.81 aiming 00:23:33.84\00:23:36.38 day after day 00:23:36.41\00:23:37.85 out there in the wilderness with his sheep. 00:23:37.88\00:23:42.02 Nobody sees him aiming. 00:23:42.05\00:23:44.52 Nobody sees him slinging 00:23:44.55\00:23:47.16 day after day out there with his sheep. 00:23:47.19\00:23:50.63 Nobody cares what he's doing. 00:23:50.66\00:23:53.13 Nobody knows what he's doing. 00:23:53.16\00:23:55.96 Day in and day... 00:23:56.00\00:23:57.67 Do you get the monotony of it? 00:23:57.70\00:23:59.63 Day out all by himself 00:23:59.67\00:24:03.30 with the sheep aiming. 00:24:03.34\00:24:10.01 No, they say it takes about 10,000 hours 00:24:10.05\00:24:12.51 to become an expert at something. 00:24:12.55\00:24:15.28 And they translate this 10,000 hours 00:24:15.32\00:24:17.12 into about 10 years to become an expert. 00:24:17.15\00:24:21.26 They did the study on, 00:24:21.29\00:24:23.56 I guess painters and musicians 00:24:23.59\00:24:25.89 and they look at their works 00:24:25.93\00:24:27.26 and how many years it takes for them 00:24:27.30\00:24:28.86 to produce a masterpiece. 00:24:28.90\00:24:30.57 And it takes roughly about 10 years 00:24:30.60\00:24:32.93 of writing song after song, 00:24:32.97\00:24:34.77 after song, after song 00:24:34.80\00:24:36.17 until finally they produce their masterpiece 00:24:36.20\00:24:38.17 about 10 years. 00:24:38.21\00:24:39.54 Can you imagine 10 years of your life? 00:24:39.57\00:24:41.64 You know, and this is what it takes. 00:24:41.68\00:24:44.75 Musicians practicing on the piano 00:24:44.78\00:24:47.75 and you practice, and you practice, 00:24:47.78\00:24:49.18 and you practice, and it's so parents, 00:24:49.22\00:24:51.35 you know, those of you who are musicians, 00:24:51.39\00:24:52.79 you should thank your parents 00:24:52.82\00:24:54.16 'cause it took 10 years of listening to you... 00:24:54.19\00:24:58.83 Some parents said amen. 00:24:58.86\00:25:01.76 Discorded notes, 10 years. 00:25:01.80\00:25:04.33 I think piano is better, but the violin it's like... 00:25:04.37\00:25:08.60 Ten years before you can play something decent 00:25:08.64\00:25:11.81 and amen to those churches 00:25:11.84\00:25:13.17 that invite you to do special music, 00:25:13.21\00:25:14.54 amen to little kids, 00:25:14.58\00:25:16.51 encourage them along the way as horrible as it sounds. 00:25:16.54\00:25:18.71 You know, God appreciates your sacrificial gift, okay? 00:25:18.75\00:25:22.58 David day in and day out 00:25:25.69\00:25:27.12 and this is not just 10 years of just doing it. 00:25:27.16\00:25:30.06 They say it has to be, 00:25:30.09\00:25:31.49 you have to focus on what you're doing. 00:25:31.53\00:25:34.03 Evaluate, critically think 00:25:34.06\00:25:37.00 through what you're doing and improve 00:25:37.03\00:25:39.03 like, okay, that time when I throw it, 00:25:39.07\00:25:41.14 you know, the angle was a bit off, 00:25:41.17\00:25:42.94 oh, you know, factor in wind velocity, 00:25:42.97\00:25:45.17 you know, the wind and factor in 00:25:45.21\00:25:48.34 year after year, day after day 00:25:48.38\00:25:51.25 until David was a master at a skill 00:25:51.28\00:25:54.65 that he wasn't practicing to slay a giant. 00:25:54.68\00:25:59.52 There's a saying, if you're going to do anything, 00:25:59.55\00:26:03.46 if anything is worth doing, it is worth doing. 00:26:03.49\00:26:07.40 Well, this is from, 00:26:07.43\00:26:09.26 you know, a father 00:26:09.30\00:26:10.63 who was writing to his illegitimate son. 00:26:10.67\00:26:14.74 And in this letter, he says, he quotes two things. 00:26:14.77\00:26:19.37 One is dance. 00:26:19.41\00:26:20.91 If you're gonna dance, dance well. 00:26:20.94\00:26:24.85 If it's worth dancing, 00:26:24.88\00:26:27.22 so let's not talk about 00:26:27.25\00:26:28.58 whether it's worth dancing or not 00:26:28.62\00:26:29.95 because this can become a whole big discussion in here. 00:26:29.98\00:26:32.39 So maybe we don't dance. 00:26:32.42\00:26:34.12 So if it's not worth doing, don't do it. 00:26:34.16\00:26:36.73 If you're not gonna dance, don't dance badly. 00:26:36.76\00:26:42.06 The second thing he says, 00:26:42.10\00:26:43.43 if you're gonna dress and he explains and he says, 00:26:43.47\00:26:46.47 "Son, everybody has to dress. 00:26:46.50\00:26:49.97 Everyone has to put on clothes. 00:26:50.01\00:26:52.17 If you're going to dress 00:26:52.21\00:26:53.68 if it's worth it to put on clothes, 00:26:53.71\00:26:57.05 then you need to dress well." 00:26:57.08\00:27:00.88 Does this make sense? 00:33:41.18\00:33:43.79 Is it worth like, you know, 00:33:47.26\00:33:48.66 sacrificing Facebook time to study? 00:33:48.69\00:33:54.40 Is it worth, you know, killing my YouTube account 00:33:54.43\00:33:58.83 in order to do well in my school work? 00:33:58.87\00:34:00.94 Is it worth dropping sugar out of my diet 00:34:04.97\00:34:06.68 so I can have clarity of thought? 00:34:06.71\00:34:09.48 Look, struggle is real on small things. 00:34:09.51\00:34:12.95 I know this from experience 'cause preparing to come to... 00:34:12.98\00:34:17.29 I have one weakness. 00:34:17.32\00:34:19.35 I have a sweet tooth, 00:34:19.39\00:34:20.72 but as a coping strategy 00:34:20.76\00:34:22.82 I decided that I'm only ever gonna eat 00:34:22.86\00:34:25.09 chocolate not carob, 00:34:25.13\00:34:28.33 chocolate and I know I shouldn't, 00:34:28.36\00:34:31.40 but if I do eat something sweet it has to be chocolate, 00:34:31.43\00:34:34.17 you know that kind of limits, 00:34:34.20\00:34:35.54 you know, so if you're gonna offer me 00:34:35.57\00:34:36.97 a lemon meringue or whatever, 00:34:37.01\00:34:38.34 whatever I'm like, No, I don't eat that, right?" 00:34:38.37\00:34:40.58 'Cause is it choc... 00:34:40.61\00:34:41.94 Oh, here's an awesome carob cookie 00:34:41.98\00:34:43.71 which I heard the carob cookies yesterday 00:34:43.75\00:34:45.31 was awesome, 00:34:45.35\00:34:46.68 but I'm like is it chocolate, 00:34:46.72\00:34:48.05 it look like chocolate, but is it chocolate? 00:35:00.13\00:35:01.73 Yeah, taking in sugar depresses your immune system 00:35:01.76\00:35:05.13 which means your body 00:35:05.17\00:35:06.50 is less able to fight off sickness. 00:35:06.53\00:35:10.57 Sugar makes you dull. 00:35:10.61\00:35:14.81 So if you're trying to take an exam, 00:35:14.84\00:35:16.51 cut out sugar, 00:35:16.54\00:35:19.11 maybe just cut it out if you're studying 00:35:19.15\00:35:21.18 which means cut it out of your life maybe, 00:35:21.22\00:35:23.52 man this is hard to say. 00:35:23.55\00:35:26.32 And in preparing to cut, my husband loves me. 00:35:26.35\00:35:29.19 So he gets me little niceties once in a while 00:35:29.22\00:35:32.46 and he knows my commitment to chocolate. 00:35:32.49\00:35:34.30 So in the sweetness of his heart, 00:35:37.67\00:35:39.07 he got me some chocolate. 00:35:39.10\00:35:42.20 And I was so mad at him because I'm like, 00:35:42.24\00:35:44.94 I'm trying to speak this week. 00:35:44.97\00:35:47.38 I cannot have chocolate, 00:35:47.41\00:35:50.65 but it's hard 00:35:50.68\00:35:52.78 because it's sitting on the counter 00:35:52.81\00:35:55.65 and it's calling your name. 00:35:55.68\00:35:59.42 Someone understand me. 00:35:59.45\00:36:00.79 Sikhu... 00:36:00.82\00:36:03.69 And I'm like, "Here, am I. 00:36:03.73\00:36:05.79 No, no, no, no, it's not the Lord." 00:36:05.83\00:36:07.33 Oh, my God. 00:37:17.10\00:37:19.03 The stuff that we're doing in private, alone, 00:37:19.07\00:37:23.20 when nobody sees, 00:37:23.24\00:37:25.17 and I'm not talking about the huge stuff we do, 00:37:25.21\00:37:27.04 I'm talking about the little things 00:37:27.08\00:37:28.71 that we do. 00:37:28.74\00:37:30.28 In private, alone, when nobody sees. 00:37:30.31\00:37:34.92 We have no time to study the Bible, 00:37:34.95\00:37:39.62 no time to study Spirit of Prophecy 00:37:39.65\00:37:43.32 because we're on this all day. 00:37:43.36\00:37:44.93 Not studying the Bible. 00:37:48.33\00:37:49.70 I read my quote from the Spirit of Prophecy 00:37:49.73\00:37:51.90 from my phone. 00:37:51.93\00:37:53.27 So you can study the Bible 00:37:53.30\00:37:54.64 or the Spirit of Prophecy from your phone, 00:37:54.67\00:37:56.00 but I'm talking about you're on Facebook, 00:37:56.04\00:37:58.31 watching videos on YouTube, and YouTube is awful, right? 00:37:58.34\00:38:00.68 'Cause they have those suggestions 00:38:00.71\00:38:02.04 on the side. 00:38:02.08\00:38:03.41 So you just watch something that was interesting, 00:38:03.45\00:38:04.88 and then you're like, 00:38:04.91\00:38:06.25 "Oh, let me watch something else." 00:38:06.28\00:38:07.62 And it could be 00:38:07.65\00:38:08.98 like an educational thing, right? 00:38:09.02\00:38:10.35 Like you watched a TED Talk that was like about sleep 00:38:10.39\00:38:13.05 and how important sleep is 00:38:13.09\00:38:14.52 and you're watching it at like 2 am in the morning. 00:38:14.56\00:38:18.46 And they suggested another video 00:38:18.49\00:38:20.16 and you watch another one, and another one. 00:38:20.20\00:38:23.06 You know, they say the average amount of time 00:38:23.10\00:38:25.87 that Americans spend on their devices is four hours. 00:38:25.90\00:38:32.77 How many hours are we awake? 00:38:32.81\00:38:34.24 Like, if you sleep, 00:38:34.28\00:38:36.04 like eight hours-ish, that leaves... 00:38:36.08\00:38:40.95 What? 00:38:40.98\00:38:42.48 Sixteen hours of awake time 00:38:42.52\00:38:44.79 and 4 hours of 16 00:38:44.82\00:38:46.59 is one quarter, 00:38:46.62\00:38:51.89 25% of your life that you are awake, 00:38:51.93\00:38:56.53 you were on this. 00:38:56.56\00:38:59.40 Now do you feel like you wasted your life, 00:38:59.43\00:39:02.64 but I got no time to study the Bible. 00:39:02.67\00:39:05.64 I can't memorize scripture 'cause I'm busy. 00:39:05.67\00:39:08.88 But somehow I found time 00:39:08.91\00:39:10.45 to spend four hours on my phone. 00:39:10.48\00:39:13.35 And that's average. 00:39:13.38\00:39:15.82 It's not talking about those of us in here 00:39:15.85\00:39:18.59 that are addicted to our devices. 00:39:18.62\00:39:20.62 This is Christianity. 00:39:23.76\00:39:25.09 I've got no time to hone the skills 00:39:27.86\00:39:29.90 that are gonna make me effective for Jesus 00:39:29.93\00:39:32.70 that are gonna help me to slay giants, 00:39:32.73\00:39:34.60 but I've got time to be on this all day, all night. 00:39:34.64\00:39:40.38 I'm not against phones, amen? 00:39:40.41\00:39:42.88 I'm not against phones. 00:39:42.91\00:39:45.41 I have one and I use it. 00:39:45.45\00:39:48.28 It's a blessing, 00:39:48.32\00:39:49.65 but if I'm not intentionally developing skills, 00:39:53.29\00:39:57.39 focusing my attention on those things 00:39:57.43\00:39:59.23 that gonna help me 00:39:59.26\00:40:01.06 to be a better honed warrior for Jesus. 00:40:01.10\00:40:04.63 So David, he's out there. 00:40:08.80\00:40:10.54 Lion and a bear come 00:40:14.38\00:40:16.71 and he risked his life to save his sheep. 00:40:16.75\00:40:20.02 I want you to notice something here. 00:40:20.05\00:40:23.35 Verse 28. 00:40:23.39\00:40:26.42 In Chapter 17 still, 00:40:26.45\00:40:28.89 "And Eliab his eldest brother when he heard 00:40:28.92\00:40:31.69 when he spake unto the men, 00:40:31.73\00:40:33.53 Eliab's anger was kindled against David" 00:40:33.56\00:40:36.20 'cause David was asking what's going on? 00:40:36.23\00:40:38.60 This giant is defying the armies of Israel, 00:40:38.63\00:40:41.27 of the armies of the Lord God Almighty 00:40:41.30\00:40:43.54 what's, nobody's going out to fight him and Eliab, 00:40:43.57\00:40:46.07 his oldest brother was like, 00:40:46.11\00:40:48.78 "David, why camest thou down hither? 00:40:48.81\00:40:53.42 And with whom has thou left 00:40:53.45\00:40:54.78 those few sheep in the wilderness?" 00:40:54.82\00:40:58.12 When I read this, I was like, "This is crazy." 00:40:58.15\00:41:00.19 Not only did David risk his life 00:41:00.22\00:41:03.99 for some dumb sheep and dumb, 00:41:04.03\00:41:05.39 I mean, they don't talk, right? 00:41:05.43\00:41:07.00 Dumb sheep, 00:41:07.03\00:41:08.56 he risked his life for a few dumb sheep. 00:41:08.60\00:41:11.87 David, you left those few sheep in the wilderness. 00:41:14.87\00:41:19.61 Here Eliab is trying to diminish 00:41:19.64\00:41:20.98 what David does, 00:41:21.01\00:41:22.34 but this actually magnifies what David does 00:41:22.38\00:41:26.48 because David's faithfulness, 00:41:26.51\00:41:28.28 we were talking about faithfulness 00:41:28.32\00:41:29.65 in small things. 00:41:29.68\00:41:31.02 He is faithful in really small things. 00:41:31.05\00:41:35.59 Little, a little flock of sheep. 00:41:35.62\00:41:38.16 The reason why David is able to slay a giant 00:41:41.66\00:41:47.07 is because of who David was. 00:41:47.10\00:41:49.50 It was a character that he developed alone 00:41:53.27\00:41:55.81 in the wilderness with the sheep. 00:41:55.84\00:41:58.71 That's who slew the giant. 00:41:58.75\00:42:01.18 Now I'm asking, who are you? 00:42:01.22\00:42:04.95 I'm talking about behind closed doors 00:42:04.99\00:42:07.29 when nobody sees. 00:42:07.32\00:42:10.13 I'm not talking about the face that you present 00:42:10.16\00:42:11.79 when you go up front, 00:42:11.83\00:42:13.29 or when you show up at church. 00:42:13.33\00:42:16.46 I'm asking who are you 00:42:16.50\00:42:17.97 when nobody sees what you're doing, 00:42:18.00\00:42:19.93 when you're on your computer screen? 00:42:19.97\00:42:21.64 Pornography, when nobody sees. 00:42:26.21\00:42:32.18 And I go out there and act like a gentleman 00:42:32.21\00:42:33.82 opening doors for ladies. 00:42:33.85\00:42:35.92 Meanwhile, 00:42:35.95\00:42:37.29 in the silent recesses of my room 00:42:37.32\00:42:39.59 of my private time, who am I? 00:42:39.62\00:42:43.46 Look, women struggle with pornography too. 00:42:43.49\00:42:45.26 I'm acting like I'm holy, 00:42:49.40\00:42:54.07 working up in here talking about men be trifling, 00:42:54.10\00:42:58.21 but in my private time 00:42:58.24\00:43:00.74 who am I when nobody sees? 00:43:00.78\00:43:07.38 What am I doing with my time? 00:43:07.42\00:43:10.19 How am I spending my time? 00:43:10.22\00:43:11.62 What skills am I honing? 00:43:11.65\00:43:12.99 And is God gonna be able to use them 00:43:13.02\00:43:15.86 in His work? 00:43:15.89\00:43:17.53 Because if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well. 00:43:17.56\00:43:22.60 And let's admit some of the things that we do 00:43:22.63\00:43:25.23 are not worth doing. 00:43:25.27\00:43:28.00 Amen? 00:43:28.04\00:43:30.91 Some of the things that we do 00:43:30.94\00:43:32.27 may not be evil in and of themselves, 00:43:32.31\00:43:34.08 but should we be investing 00:43:37.35\00:43:40.35 the amount of time and effort into those things? 00:43:40.38\00:43:45.39 Learning how to swipe 00:43:45.42\00:43:48.42 as fast as possible on my phone, 00:43:48.46\00:43:50.69 you're swipe masters. 00:43:50.73\00:43:54.30 I can send a text message. 00:43:54.33\00:43:55.66 Oh, sorry. We don't even swipe nowadays. 00:43:55.70\00:43:57.50 We talk to our phone, right? 00:43:57.53\00:43:59.17 Like, I know how to talk to my phone 00:43:59.20\00:44:00.54 so she understands my messages and sends them for me. 00:44:00.57\00:44:04.17 Phone tell GYC that I'm having a blessed time. 00:44:04.21\00:44:09.01 Are you? 00:44:09.04\00:44:11.65 We know how to do that and do it very well. 00:44:11.68\00:44:13.52 Are we being intentional 00:44:17.95\00:44:21.12 in honing the skills that God will be able to use? 00:44:21.16\00:44:25.09 So David, we're coming to the close now. 00:44:25.13\00:44:30.17 When David is before Goliath, 00:44:30.20\00:44:33.90 Goliath, it says came at him. 00:44:33.94\00:44:37.04 And instead of running away 00:44:37.07\00:44:39.14 because of the life that David has lived 00:44:39.17\00:44:41.84 because David has seen God work in him in the past 00:44:41.88\00:44:46.61 because David has seen God use him to slay a lion 00:44:46.65\00:44:50.89 grabbing by the beard, 00:44:50.92\00:44:53.99 like, "Oh, you're gonna come at me, 00:44:54.02\00:44:56.29 you're gonna try to get my few sheep." 00:44:56.32\00:44:59.66 No, sir. 00:44:59.69\00:45:01.03 And David has seen God work in his life in private. 00:45:01.06\00:45:06.30 Are you hearing what I'm saying? 00:45:06.33\00:45:08.70 We want to slay giants in public, 00:45:08.74\00:45:13.04 but God wants to work in your private life first. 00:45:13.07\00:45:18.11 David has seen God do 00:45:18.15\00:45:20.32 amazing things for him in private. 00:45:20.35\00:45:22.88 So when that giant comes at him, 00:45:22.92\00:45:24.75 he's not afraid. 00:45:24.79\00:45:27.09 He's got no fear 00:45:27.12\00:45:29.39 because he says, "You know what? 00:45:29.42\00:45:31.09 God has helped me overcome appetite." 00:45:31.13\00:45:35.86 When I wanted to eat that thing, 00:45:35.90\00:45:37.23 and I prayed, 00:45:37.27\00:45:38.60 God gave me the strength not to eat it. 00:45:38.63\00:45:39.97 I know God can help me slay a giant. 00:45:40.00\00:45:41.97 God has helped me 00:45:45.41\00:45:46.74 to overcome this area in my life. 00:45:46.78\00:45:49.24 Laziness, 00:45:49.28\00:45:53.18 I hate waking up in the morning. 00:45:53.21\00:45:56.72 The alarm goes off 00:45:56.75\00:45:58.09 and rollover and snooze, snooze, 00:45:58.12\00:46:00.59 I'm like, snoozing for... 00:46:00.62\00:46:01.96 You know, Proverbs talks about it. 00:46:01.99\00:46:03.53 Person who's like, you know, like a door and its hinges, 00:46:03.56\00:46:06.59 snooze, snooze, snooze. 00:46:06.63\00:46:09.73 God helped me to overcome laziness, 00:46:09.76\00:46:12.83 and get up in the morning. 00:46:12.87\00:46:16.67 God will help me overcome this giant. 00:46:16.71\00:46:18.61 God wants to work in your private life. 00:46:21.84\00:46:25.25 What's going on in your life in secret? 00:46:25.28\00:46:29.12 What is it that's happening in your life 00:46:29.15\00:46:30.65 that you can't overcome? 00:46:30.69\00:46:32.35 What's the struggle that's going on 00:46:32.39\00:46:33.99 that you can't find the victory? 00:46:34.02\00:46:36.12 And for all you're trying, you can't find the victory, 00:46:36.16\00:46:39.13 and God wants to give you that victory, 00:46:39.16\00:46:41.40 that private victory first. 00:46:41.43\00:46:43.53 Do you believe He can do it? 00:46:46.70\00:46:48.04 God can save by many or by few the few that God saves by, 00:46:52.87\00:46:57.75 are the few who trust Him completely. 00:46:57.78\00:47:02.82 And the few who trust Him completely. 00:47:02.85\00:47:05.29 Trust Him not just when people are looking, 00:47:05.32\00:47:08.89 but in private by myself 00:47:08.92\00:47:13.56 in my room, in my bed, 00:47:13.60\00:47:16.83 for some of you, 00:47:16.87\00:47:18.20 your private spot is the bathroom. 00:47:18.23\00:47:21.40 When I'm sitting there in the bathroom 00:47:21.44\00:47:22.90 in my quiet time, 00:47:22.94\00:47:25.17 God wants to give you the victory 00:47:25.21\00:47:27.91 in your private life. 00:47:27.94\00:47:30.31 This is my appeal this morning. 00:47:30.35\00:47:34.42 Do you need a victory?
