It wasn't long ago when
I got the chance to visit

the old Hawaiian
town called Kalapana.

Kalapana was once a popular
and well-populated beach town

located right
along the southeast shore
00:09:39.57\00:09:42.28
of the big island
at the base of Kilauea.
00:09:42.31\00:09:44.95
Kilauea is the longest
active volcano in the world
00:09:45.01\00:09:48.52
located right there in the
beautiful Islands of Hawaii
00:09:48.55\00:09:52.02
but tragically, the
whole town was wiped out
00:09:52.05\00:09:55.62
during the 1986 lava flow.
00:09:55.66\00:09:58.09
Every business... every street
and every home was destroyed

by the lava flow

and so when you go there now,

all you can see is a desolate
desert of black lava rocks,

there's really
nothing that's easy on the eye

but there's
something at the end of town

that drew hundreds of
people every single day

but in order to see it,

you have to go beyond
the paved easy pathway.

It's a tiresome four-mile
hike but every step is worth it

because when you get to the end,

you are brought
to see what I call

one of the top five
things to see before you die

and that is...
raging rivers of lava

flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

It is an incredible sight...

I did the trip not long ago,

I was driven and
drawn further beyond

and what I saw was
absolutely mesmerizing,

After the four-mile hike,

this rugged rocky road

the edge of the cliff

that overlooks
the fiery peninsula

and from that vantage point,

you can see streams
of these red river rocks

flowing into the ocean

and when the lava
touches the water,

it creates a violent reaction.

The river of hot lava rock

There are aggressive explosions

shooting into the air,

followed by streaks
of red and orange sparks

and the intense heat causes
the salt water to vaporize

immediately on contact

creating billowing steam clouds
that rise hundreds of feet

and the glow the molten

beautiful black sandy beaches

Sunsets and sun rises
are the best times to view it

the transitioning colors

chance to experience both

light, warmed by its heat,

and captivated by its power,

just watching the power of God

in the most recent
eruption a few months ago,

all the lava in
the crater drained out

but you can still go and
see the aftermath of the flow

and you can walk on freshly-made

it's beautiful but
in order to see it,

you have to be driven
and drawn further beyond.

My friends, as I
had this experience,

I got to thinking that
there's something about fire

that captivates the senses

and I believe that this is how
God wants us to feel about Him

and work in
sharing Him with others.

That's how the
Psalmist felt when he prayed

and by-the-way, Jeremiah
the prophet felt the same way.

In Jeremiah chapter 20 and
verse 9, Jeremiah testified,

"Then I said, I will
not make mention of Him

nor speak any more in His name.

But His word was in
my heart as burning fire

shut upon in my bones; and
I was weary with forbearing,

and I could not
stay. " Jeremiah said.

You see, there came a
time in Jeremiah's experience

where he tried to repress the
message and resist the mission.

There came a time in
Jeremiah's experience

that he got discouraged
because it seemed like

no one was listening
to what he was saying

and so, he tried to keep quiet

but the fire of
God consumed him,

the living Word in his
heart was crying out to be heard

crying out for expression and
Jeremiah couldn't hold it back.

live in a cold, dark world,

and in that city,
everywhere you turned,

you saw posters of this
man, it was a disturbing sight.

This extreme act caught the
attention of the whole world

and when I saw that,

I started thinking, you know,

when the church
of God is on fire,

the whole world is
going to take notice.

It reminded me of what
that famous English Reformer

and spiritual Method

And Friends, I
believe that that's perhaps

one of the reasons why
many of our churches are empty

our ministry... our messages...

The fire quickly
spread to our home

people that lived on our street

they're out in the cold street
