Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 Can the righteous draw back to perdition? 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.83 Can an apostate be restored? 00:00:04.86\00:00:06.98 Join us now on "The Grace Pipeline" 00:00:07.01\00:00:08.65 to see what the Bible has to say about this. 00:00:08.68\00:00:12.01 Welcome to "The Grace Pipeline." 00:00:34.64\00:00:36.63 This series is based on a Bible study book 00:00:36.66\00:00:40.02 by the same title which I was privileged to write. 00:00:40.05\00:00:42.94 And today if you're following 00:00:42.97\00:00:44.34 along in this series companion book, 00:00:44.37\00:00:46.18 we are beginning in Chapter 11, to talk about guarding grace. 00:00:46.21\00:00:50.88 If we look back to the beginning in Genesis 3:1, 00:00:50.91\00:00:54.82 the Bible declares, "Now the serpent 00:00:54.85\00:00:56.78 was more cunning and he said to the woman, 00:00:56.81\00:00:59.78 'Has God indeed said.'" 00:00:59.81\00:01:02.88 Here we see that from the beginning 00:01:02.91\00:01:05.09 in the Garden of Eden, the devil has distorted 00:01:05.12\00:01:08.32 the word of God for the purpose of creating 00:01:08.35\00:01:11.62 doubt in the mind of humanity. 00:01:11.65\00:01:13.95 The serpent entrapped Eve by twisting God's words, 00:01:13.98\00:01:18.03 resulting in the fall of the first created couple. 00:01:18.06\00:01:21.21 Do you doubt that Satan continues to use 00:01:21.24\00:01:24.35 the same deceitful tactic today? 00:01:24.38\00:01:27.42 You know, I grew up attending a New Testing-- 00:01:27.45\00:01:30.28 New Testament denominational church where I never heard 00:01:30.31\00:01:34.15 the grace of God mentioned in a sermon. 00:01:34.18\00:01:36.56 As we sang "Amazing Grace," I would get a glimpse of it 00:01:36.59\00:01:41.08 and a heart felt hint of its meaning, 00:01:41.11\00:01:43.75 but any appreciation of its glory was rested from my 00:01:43.78\00:01:47.96 awareness by the teachings of my church and my family. 00:01:47.99\00:01:51.34 I was taught, God could not love me unless I was perfect. 00:01:51.37\00:01:56.10 And trying earnestly to win His love, 00:01:56.13\00:01:58.90 I became frustrated at my failures to achieve 00:01:58.93\00:02:01.89 perfection which was beyond my natural grasp. 00:02:01.92\00:02:06.30 I was caught in the devil's snare 00:02:06.33\00:02:08.95 and the teeth of that demonic trap of works 00:02:08.98\00:02:12.79 based salvation dug deep, wounding my soul 00:02:12.82\00:02:16.40 and creating within me a staggering insecurity. 00:02:16.43\00:02:20.20 And what happened is I dragged that steel tooth lie around. 00:02:20.23\00:02:23.88 My spiritual progression inched along in a slow crawl. 00:02:23.91\00:02:27.79 Although I loved Jesus Christ, I mistakenly believed 00:02:27.82\00:02:31.78 it was impossible to please the Father. 00:02:31.81\00:02:34.39 And as a young adult I felt doomed. 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.62 Actually, there were times when I just gave up, 00:02:37.65\00:02:40.51 abandoning my dismal efforts to save myself 00:02:40.54\00:02:44.00 and then I would walk in the ways of the world. 00:02:44.03\00:02:47.17 But God in His mercy would not let go off me. 00:02:47.20\00:02:50.50 When I heard of grace for the first time, 00:02:50.53\00:02:52.94 God sprung that trap open for me and shaking the devil-- 00:02:52.97\00:02:56.73 the devilish device from my foot. 00:02:56.76\00:02:59.52 I began a new journey with the Lord by changing churches. 00:02:59.55\00:03:03.42 You know, the services were different 00:03:03.45\00:03:05.50 than I was accustomed to, 00:03:05.53\00:03:07.10 and they seemed like a constant celebration. 00:03:07.13\00:03:10.06 It was exacting and it appealed to my emotions. 00:03:10.09\00:03:13.68 I read my Bible regularly and I felt satisfied 00:03:13.71\00:03:16.88 that I was fulfilling God's will. 00:03:16.91\00:03:19.47 Although I still had questions about grace. 00:03:19.50\00:03:21.81 I made no serious effort to search the scriptures 00:03:21.84\00:03:25.07 for greater understanding and I was walking 00:03:25.10\00:03:28.02 on dangerous ground unaware. 00:03:28.05\00:03:30.69 I thought that I had found God's true path of grace, 00:03:30.72\00:03:35.60 but I overstepped His boundaries that serve as our safeguard. 00:03:35.63\00:03:40.55 And when I did, it happened. 00:03:40.58\00:03:42.53 Snap the jaws of the devil's snare 00:03:42.56\00:03:45.75 clamped down on my other foot, 00:03:45.78\00:03:47.77 again slowing my spiritual progress. 00:03:47.80\00:03:51.15 This occurred over 30 years ago 00:03:51.18\00:03:53.47 when I was speaking with the new friend from the church 00:03:53.50\00:03:56.46 and I was shocked at something 00:03:56.49\00:03:58.96 that she was doing in a defense of her behavior. 00:03:58.99\00:04:02.07 She quoted her favorite scripture, 00:04:02.10\00:04:04.24 interpreting it according to the understanding 00:04:04.27\00:04:07.49 which had been delivered to her. 00:04:07.52\00:04:10.24 She said, "Shelley, 2 Timothy 2:13 says, 00:04:10.27\00:04:14.06 'If we are faithless, He remains faithful.' 00:04:14.09\00:04:16.77 We're God's children. 00:04:16.80\00:04:18.17 So no matter what we do, we can't fall from God's grace. 00:04:18.20\00:04:22.41 He loves us too much to lose us." 00:04:22.44\00:04:25.18 And unfortunately I allowed her single reference 00:04:25.21\00:04:29.82 to a single scripture taken out of context 00:04:29.85\00:04:32.87 to influence my immature concept of grace. 00:04:32.90\00:04:36.28 It was soothing to think that I could do no wrong 00:04:36.31\00:04:39.01 in the eyes of my Lord and I walked in that delusion 00:04:39.04\00:04:42.33 for nearly 2 years, dubbing anyone who focused 00:04:42.36\00:04:46.31 on obedience as legalistic and unlearned in grace. 00:04:46.34\00:04:51.22 One morning while I was reading 00:04:51.25\00:04:53.02 Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, 00:04:53.05\00:04:55.21 a verse lit up like a flashing neon sign 00:04:55.24\00:04:59.14 and Paul just had provided a brief history 00:04:59.17\00:05:03.80 of the wanderings of the nation of Israel, 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.60 telling of their transgressions and how they finally 00:05:06.63\00:05:10.57 exhausted the Lord's patience. 00:05:10.60\00:05:13.18 After explaining that God's judgment 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.90 against Israel was a warning to Christians, 00:05:15.93\00:05:18.99 he issued a warning and shared words 00:05:19.02\00:05:21.24 of encouragement in 1 Corinthians 10:12, 13. 00:05:21.27\00:05:26.13 Where he says, "Therefore let him 00:05:26.16\00:05:28.79 who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 00:05:28.82\00:05:33.02 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man. 00:05:33.05\00:05:38.08 But God is faithful, who will not allow you 00:05:38.11\00:05:41.30 to be tempted beyond what you are able, 00:05:41.33\00:05:43.82 but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, 00:05:43.85\00:05:48.37 that you may be able to bear it." 00:05:48.40\00:05:51.89 What? "Let him 00:05:51.92\00:05:53.31 who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall." 00:05:53.34\00:05:57.51 Suddenly I began to have second thoughts 00:05:57.54\00:06:00.38 about the security of my salvation. 00:06:00.41\00:06:02.91 Was it possible to fall from grace? 00:06:02.94\00:06:05.54 Was I ignoring God's way of escape 00:06:05.57\00:06:07.67 from temptation and danger of falling away? 00:06:07.70\00:06:11.05 I began studying in earnest and Scripture exposed 00:06:11.08\00:06:15.49 the error I had been lead to believe. 00:06:15.52\00:06:18.18 I studied my friend's favorite verse this time 00:06:18.21\00:06:21.97 within context found in 2 Timothy 2:11-13. 00:06:22.00\00:06:27.67 And it reads, "This is a faithful saying. 00:06:27.70\00:06:31.50 For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. 00:06:31.53\00:06:35.21 If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. 00:06:35.24\00:06:38.42 If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 00:06:38.45\00:06:43.16 If we are faithless, He remains faithful. 00:06:43.19\00:06:46.63 He cannot deny Himself." 00:06:46.66\00:06:49.72 What happened as I probe the meanings of these verses? 00:06:49.75\00:06:53.45 Truth appealed to solid reasoning and helped me 00:06:53.48\00:06:57.00 escape the snare of distorting God's word. 00:06:57.03\00:07:00.66 The Lord reversed my thinking, 00:07:00.69\00:07:03.23 graciously granting me the gift of repentance. 00:07:03.26\00:07:06.96 So what I'd like to do now is take this passage 00:07:06.99\00:07:09.86 and consider it within context of New Testament teaching. 00:07:09.89\00:07:14.84 In verse 11 of 2 Timothy 2, he says, 00:07:14.87\00:07:18.98 "For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him." 00:07:19.01\00:07:23.70 Paul frequently taught that Christians are to be 00:07:23.73\00:07:26.64 dead to self and sin, but alive to God 00:07:26.67\00:07:30.72 in His gift of recreated life through the regeneration 00:07:30.75\00:07:35.13 and the renewal of the Holy Sprit 00:07:35.16\00:07:37.51 born again believers are alive in Christ. 00:07:37.54\00:07:41.70 Now verse 12, "If we endure, we shall also reign with Him." 00:07:41.73\00:07:47.86 You know, Jesus promised 00:07:47.89\00:07:49.42 if we endure to the end we will be saved. 00:07:49.45\00:07:52.82 And Hebrews explains our need of endurance saying 00:07:52.85\00:07:57.26 that it is after we have done the will of God 00:07:57.29\00:08:00.70 as faithful followers of Christ then we will receive 00:08:00.73\00:08:04.59 the promise of reigning with Him. 00:08:04.62\00:08:07.56 Now verse 12 reads, if we-- 00:08:07.59\00:08:12.17 this is a second half of verse 12. 00:08:12.20\00:08:13.74 "If we deny Him, He will also deny us." 00:08:13.77\00:08:19.73 Denying Christ does not demand a verbal rejection. 00:08:19.76\00:08:24.13 Habitual disregard for His commandments 00:08:24.16\00:08:27.69 and deliberate sin are a denial of Christ. 00:08:27.72\00:08:31.36 We are rejecting His authority, refusing to abide in Him 00:08:31.39\00:08:35.60 and the power of His grace. 00:08:35.63\00:08:37.38 And consequently, we are disowning Him. 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.70 Paul identifies people of this mindset of-- 00:08:40.73\00:08:44.27 as pretenders saying in Titus 1:16, 00:08:44.30\00:08:47.61 "They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him." 00:08:47.64\00:08:52.58 And Christ warns in Matthew 10:33, 00:08:52.61\00:08:55.78 "Whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny 00:08:55.81\00:08:59.98 before My Father who is in heaven." 00:09:00.01\00:09:02.50 And another stern warning is found in Jude 1:3-5. 00:09:02.53\00:09:08.23 Where he says, "Contend earnestly for the faith 00:09:08.26\00:09:12.66 which was once for all delivered to the saints. 00:09:12.69\00:09:16.21 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, ungodly men, 00:09:16.24\00:09:21.97 who turn the grace of our God into lewdness 00:09:22.00\00:09:25.11 and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:09:25.14\00:09:29.06 But I want to remind you that the Lord, 00:09:29.09\00:09:31.55 having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, 00:09:31.58\00:09:34.48 afterward destroyed those who did not believe." 00:09:34.51\00:09:40.13 Let me ask. Do our actions deny our loyalty to God? 00:09:40.16\00:09:44.97 Through the great commission Christ called His followers 00:09:45.00\00:09:47.66 to be ambassadors for Him. 00:09:47.69\00:09:50.04 And in 2009, I better understood this title 00:09:50.07\00:09:53.09 "Ambassador" and the position after hearing 00:09:53.12\00:09:56.10 Ambassador Bienvenido Tejano, who--he was here 00:09:56.13\00:09:59.80 speaking at 3ABN's corporate morning worship. 00:09:59.83\00:10:02.43 And he explained his role 00:10:02.46\00:10:04.12 as the Philippines ambassador to New Zealand. 00:10:04.15\00:10:07.00 It was his responsibility to know the exact will 00:10:07.03\00:10:10.23 of the nation's President and the code of regulations 00:10:10.26\00:10:13.17 for the government he represented. 00:10:13.20\00:10:15.30 He was accountable to speak and act 00:10:15.33\00:10:18.72 in perfect agreement with the Philippines leader and laws. 00:10:18.75\00:10:22.97 To violate either would be a denial of the authority 00:10:23.00\00:10:26.40 vested in him and no doubt grounds for dismissal. 00:10:26.43\00:10:30.73 Is this principle any less binding on Christians? 00:10:30.76\00:10:34.46 We are to be a living memorial of God's power for salvation, 00:10:34.49\00:10:39.31 a letter written on the heart by the Holy Sprit. 00:10:39.34\00:10:43.72 Now let's continue looking in 2 Timothy 2:13, 00:10:43.75\00:10:47.93 he--Paul writes, 00:10:47.96\00:10:49.39 "If we are faithless, He remains faithful. 00:10:49.42\00:10:54.68 He cannot deny Himself." 00:10:54.71\00:10:56.11 Ah, this was the verse 00:10:56.14\00:10:58.02 that I had twisted with unstable reasoning. 00:10:58.05\00:11:01.97 But considering the context of the entire passage 00:11:02.00\00:11:05.04 and the balance of Bible teaching, 00:11:05.07\00:11:07.45 the veil of deception was lifted from my eyes. 00:11:07.48\00:11:11.85 Paul's intent in verse 13 is to forewarn us. 00:11:11.88\00:11:16.22 If we do not believe in God's power to save us from sin 00:11:16.25\00:11:20.70 and we become unfaithful to Him, 00:11:20.73\00:11:23.36 God cannot help but to remain faithful 00:11:23.39\00:11:26.52 to His righteous character and His sure word. 00:11:26.55\00:11:30.98 His promises are trustworthy. 00:11:31.01\00:11:34.02 He will faithfully reward all who live by His divine grace 00:11:34.05\00:11:38.97 never forsaking the one who trust in Him. 00:11:39.00\00:11:42.45 But He will be equally faithful 00:11:42.48\00:11:45.23 to His promises of punishment for the wicked. 00:11:45.26\00:11:48.49 God anguishes over a lost relationship, 00:11:48.52\00:11:51.76 but he cannot deny His word 00:11:51.79\00:11:54.19 for that would be to deny Himself. 00:11:54.22\00:11:57.88 Christ promises that no one can snatch us 00:11:57.91\00:12:01.35 from our Heavenly Father's protective hand. 00:12:01.38\00:12:04.23 And Paul further promises that absolutely nothing 00:12:04.26\00:12:07.05 can separate us from God's love. 00:12:07.08\00:12:09.93 The unfailing love and concern of our protective and patient 00:12:09.96\00:12:13.86 Heavenly Father is our safeguard. 00:12:13.89\00:12:17.10 Peter assures us that through our faith 00:12:17.13\00:12:19.80 and the provision of God's grace, 00:12:19.83\00:12:22.06 we are kept by God's power for salvation, 00:12:22.09\00:12:25.85 but even so, grace does not eliminate free will. 00:12:25.88\00:12:29.72 It is possible to have 00:12:29.75\00:12:31.46 a form of godliness, but deny its power. 00:12:31.49\00:12:35.29 It is possible to choose to cast off Christ's yoke 00:12:35.32\00:12:39.77 and walk away breaking the heart of our loving Heavenly Father. 00:12:39.80\00:12:45.95 Hebrews 3:12 warns, "Beware, brethren, 00:12:45.98\00:12:50.06 lest there be in any of you an evil heart 00:12:50.09\00:12:53.36 of unbelieving in departing from the living God." 00:12:53.39\00:12:59.13 This warning to Christians clearly demonstrates 00:12:59.16\00:13:02.14 the possibility of taking a detour from God's 00:13:02.17\00:13:05.55 narrow path of life and walking away from His source of grace. 00:13:05.58\00:13:10.52 If we draw back from following in the footsteps of Christ, 00:13:10.55\00:13:14.79 we depart from the Father. 00:13:14.82\00:13:18.30 In Ephesians 5, Paul explains that children of God must 00:13:18.33\00:13:23.76 imitate their Father and walk in the power of His love. 00:13:23.79\00:13:28.79 We should always remain mindful of the cost of grace. 00:13:28.82\00:13:33.11 In His great love God sent Christ to die for us 00:13:33.14\00:13:37.63 and in consideration of Christ's sacrifice, 00:13:37.66\00:13:40.82 Paul counsels us that fornication 00:13:40.85\00:13:43.87 and covetousness and all uncleanness and filthiness 00:13:43.90\00:13:47.57 including foolish talking and coarse jesting 00:13:47.60\00:13:51.25 are not fitting for a child of God. 00:13:51.28\00:13:54.24 He ends with this stern warning in Ephesians 5:5-7. 00:13:54.27\00:14:01.02 "For this you know, that no fornicator, 00:14:01.05\00:14:03.99 unclean person, nor covetous man, 00:14:04.02\00:14:06.43 who is an idolater, has any inheritance 00:14:06.46\00:14:09.72 in the kingdom of Christ and God. 00:14:09.75\00:14:12.34 Let no one deceive you with empty words, 00:14:12.37\00:14:15.36 for because of these things the wrath of God 00:14:15.39\00:14:18.53 comes upon the sons of disobedience. 00:14:18.56\00:14:21.22 Therefore do not be partakers with them." 00:14:21.25\00:14:25.85 I have a friend of 30 years who once took 00:14:25.88\00:14:28.17 ministerial studies and lived for the Lord. 00:14:28.20\00:14:30.78 He understood and lived by righteousness by faith. 00:14:30.81\00:14:34.12 But sadly for the last 12 years, 00:14:34.15\00:14:36.22 he no longer practices righteousness. 00:14:36.25\00:14:38.71 He has drawn back from the Lord 00:14:38.74\00:14:40.77 and joined with the sons of disobedience. 00:14:40.80\00:14:43.39 He totally disregards God's commandments 00:14:43.42\00:14:46.08 and his life is a wreck. 00:14:46.11\00:14:47.87 What does God think about 00:14:47.90\00:14:49.73 the habitual pattern of sin in his life? 00:14:49.76\00:14:53.09 Listen to the Lord's warning in Ezekiel 33:18 and 19. 00:14:53.12\00:14:58.70 He says, "When the righteous turns from his righteousness 00:14:58.73\00:15:02.08 and commits iniquity, he shall die because of it. 00:15:02.11\00:15:05.45 But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does 00:15:05.48\00:15:09.57 what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it." 00:15:09.60\00:15:14.67 And the New Testament repeats 00:15:14.70\00:15:16.73 God's warning in Hebrews 10:36-39. 00:15:16.76\00:15:21.41 It says, "For you have need of endurance, 00:15:21.44\00:15:24.76 so that after you have done the will of God, 00:15:24.79\00:15:28.18 you may receive the promise. 00:15:28.21\00:15:30.49 'For yet a little while, and He who is coming 00:15:30.52\00:15:32.71 will come and will not tarry. 00:15:32.74\00:15:34.78 Now the just shall live by faith. 00:15:34.81\00:15:37.34 But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.' 00:15:37.37\00:15:42.43 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, 00:15:42.46\00:15:45.48 but of those who believe to the saving of the soul." 00:15:45.51\00:15:51.22 When we understand and receive the power of divine grace, 00:15:51.25\00:15:55.55 we will walk by faith. 00:15:55.58\00:15:57.57 No trial or tribulation can cause us 00:15:57.60\00:16:00.62 to draw away from God's protective hand. 00:16:00.65\00:16:03.91 We will not turn away from the truth 00:16:03.94\00:16:06.14 and seek teachings that tickle our itching ears 00:16:06.17\00:16:09.51 or be counted among those who twist scripture 00:16:09.54\00:16:12.45 to their own destruction and fall away 00:16:12.48\00:16:14.67 from grace as described in 2 Peter 3:16-18. 00:16:14.70\00:16:20.63 He says, "Some things hard to understand, 00:16:20.66\00:16:23.28 which untaught and unstable people 00:16:23.31\00:16:26.31 twist to their own destruction, 00:16:26.34\00:16:31.88 as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 00:16:31.91\00:16:33.28 You therefore, beloved, beware lest you also 00:16:33.31\00:16:35.78 fall from your own steadfastness, 00:16:35.81\00:16:38.34 being led away with the error of the wicked, 00:16:38.37\00:16:41.49 but grow in grace and the knowledge 00:16:41.52\00:16:44.03 of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." 00:16:44.06\00:16:47.98 You know, in the previous Chapter the apostle issued 00:16:48.01\00:16:52.02 a strong alert against the potential danger of apostasy 00:16:52.05\00:16:57.36 which simply means to fall away from the Lord. 00:16:57.39\00:16:59.83 He warned of the seduction of false teachers 00:16:59.86\00:17:02.60 who corrupt good morals 00:17:02.63\00:17:04.67 by speaking great swelling words of emptiness. 00:17:04.70\00:17:09.42 Their allure is lofty expression of liberty 00:17:09.45\00:17:13.53 from the restrictions of God's word. 00:17:13.56\00:17:16.00 Teaching people to walk after the flesh, 00:17:16.03\00:17:18.91 they delude Christians who had at one time 00:17:18.94\00:17:22.14 adhered to the truth, turning them aside 00:17:22.17\00:17:25.56 from the way of righteousness and from the Holy commandments. 00:17:25.59\00:17:29.26 This reversal of right doing by casting off 00:17:29.29\00:17:32.27 the restraining power of grace is compared 00:17:32.30\00:17:36.33 by Peter to a dog returning to his own vomit. 00:17:36.36\00:17:40.05 And he concludes in 2 Peter 2:20 saying, 00:17:40.08\00:17:43.78 "For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world 00:17:43.81\00:17:48.40 through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, 00:17:48.43\00:17:51.84 they are again entangled in them and overcome, 00:17:51.87\00:17:56.11 the latter end is worse for them than the beginning." 00:17:56.14\00:18:01.43 You know, apostasy is a worse condition than ignorance. 00:18:01.46\00:18:06.24 For it is more difficult, although not impossible 00:18:06.27\00:18:09.79 to reach the heart of those who have turned away 00:18:09.82\00:18:13.01 from divine grace than to reach those 00:18:13.04\00:18:15.66 who've never heard God's precious truths. 00:18:15.69\00:18:19.50 God's mercy and divine grace are witnessed 00:18:19.53\00:18:23.25 in the Old Testament through His dealing 00:18:23.28\00:18:25.48 with the apostate king, wicked king Manasseh. 00:18:25.51\00:18:29.73 This selfish idolater and cruel murderer condemned by God 00:18:29.76\00:18:34.88 was later accepted and restored by God. 00:18:34.91\00:18:39.37 His history is found partially in 2 Kings 21 00:18:39.40\00:18:43.04 which abruptly breaks off to be resumed in 2 Chronicles 33. 00:18:43.07\00:18:48.85 Manasseh was the only son of King Hezekiah. 00:18:48.88\00:18:52.71 And he became his father's successor 00:18:52.74\00:18:54.92 to the throne at 12 years of age. 00:18:54.95\00:18:58.42 He was the longest reigning King of Judah, 00:18:58.45\00:19:01.25 but all the good that his father Hezekiah 00:19:01.28\00:19:04.05 had accomplished was undone by this wicked son. 00:19:04.08\00:19:08.26 The immature King fell under heathen influence 00:19:08.29\00:19:12.14 and treacherously turned his back on God 00:19:12.17\00:19:15.02 abolishing Israel's religious faith in the Lord 00:19:15.05\00:19:18.76 and leading Judah into a relapse of wide spread idolatry. 00:19:18.79\00:19:24.73 2 Chronicles 33:9 says, "Manasseh seduced Judah 00:19:24.76\00:19:29.76 and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do more evil 00:19:29.79\00:19:33.38 than the natious-- nations whom the Lord 00:19:33.41\00:19:35.83 had destroyed before the children of Israel." 00:19:35.86\00:19:40.63 He introduced the horrifying custom of sacrificing 00:19:40.66\00:19:45.05 children to Moloch, causing his own son to pass 00:19:45.08\00:19:49.09 through the fire in the honor of the heathen idol. 00:19:49.12\00:19:52.57 He used witchcraft. He consulted spiritists. 00:19:52.60\00:19:56.30 He consulted mediums and he shed much innocent blood. 00:19:56.33\00:20:01.61 Manasseh practiced great evils on the side of the Lord. 00:20:01.64\00:20:05.78 And he provoked God to anger. 00:20:05.81\00:20:08.60 The Lord sent His prophets to warn and reprove him, 00:20:08.63\00:20:12.39 but Manasseh would not listen. 00:20:12.42\00:20:14.41 Rather, he responded with cruel persecution 00:20:14.44\00:20:17.96 of the prophets and though the time 00:20:17.99\00:20:20.31 and manner of Isaiah's death are unknown from Scripture, 00:20:20.34\00:20:23.91 rabbinical tradition holds 00:20:23.94\00:20:26.05 that when Isaiah was 90 years old, 00:20:26.08\00:20:28.57 he sought refuge in a cedar tree to hide from Manasseh. 00:20:28.60\00:20:32.86 And there he was sawn asunder, 00:20:32.89\00:20:35.73 sawn in two by command of the heathen king. 00:20:35.76\00:20:39.41 In about the 21st or 22nd year of Manasseh's reign, 00:20:39.44\00:20:43.48 his unfaithfulness to God 00:20:43.51\00:20:46.28 brought the Lord's judgment against him, 00:20:46.31\00:20:48.70 which led to Judah's ultimate destruction and exile. 00:20:48.73\00:20:53.28 Manasseh was captured by the captains 00:20:53.31\00:20:55.52 of the King of Babylon and he lost all of his 00:20:55.55\00:20:58.73 royal dignity when he was carried off 00:20:58.76\00:21:01.21 by his conquerors in iron bonds and fetters led by a rope 00:21:01.24\00:21:06.49 that was attached to a hook in his nose. 00:21:06.52\00:21:10.27 But, you know, in severe distress 00:21:10.30\00:21:12.14 at the cruel hands of his captors, 00:21:12.17\00:21:14.37 Manasseh's eyes were opened and he came to his senses. 00:21:14.40\00:21:18.87 The idols he served were unable to save him. 00:21:18.90\00:21:22.47 He became convinced God was the only true God, 00:21:22.50\00:21:26.11 Creator of the world. 00:21:26.14\00:21:27.97 And ashamed of his sin he repented 00:21:28.00\00:21:30.73 humbled himself and cried out to the Lord. 00:21:30.76\00:21:34.17 God listened and answered his prayers. 00:21:34.20\00:21:37.21 Manasseh entered into covenant with God 00:21:37.24\00:21:39.57 who graciously delivered him 00:21:39.60\00:21:41.86 and even restored the kingdom of Judah to him. 00:21:41.89\00:21:46.86 Manasseh abandoned his idolatrous ways 00:21:46.89\00:21:50.02 and tried to reverse the evil he had done. 00:21:50.05\00:21:52.84 He restored the altar of the Lord, 00:21:52.87\00:21:55.42 sacrificing to God only, 00:21:55.45\00:21:57.48 and commanded the people of Judah to worship Jehovah. 00:21:57.51\00:22:01.37 So it was that Manasseh died in peace with God. 00:22:01.40\00:22:05.97 As we consider Manasseh's rebellion against God, 00:22:06.00\00:22:09.74 his captivity by cruel enemies, his repentance, 00:22:09.77\00:22:13.61 his restoration to the kingdom, 00:22:13.64\00:22:15.80 and the transformation of his character, 00:22:15.83\00:22:18.53 we see God's long suffering patience 00:22:18.56\00:22:22.28 and the renewing power of His grace 00:22:22.31\00:22:25.59 to subdue even the most offensive forms of sin. 00:22:25.62\00:22:30.58 Manasseh's history parallels the New Testament parable 00:22:30.61\00:22:35.10 of the prodigal son who recognized his own 00:22:35.13\00:22:38.34 wretched condition and returned to his father. 00:22:38.37\00:22:41.59 Like the father of the parable, 00:22:41.62\00:22:43.94 our Heavenly Father's love is inexhaustible. 00:22:43.97\00:22:47.82 And He waits for His returning children with outstretched arms. 00:22:47.85\00:22:52.98 The hand of grace is never closed to the repentant sinner. 00:22:53.01\00:22:58.79 God delights in mercy and restoration. 00:22:58.82\00:23:02.49 What an encouragement this is to trembling hearts. 00:23:02.52\00:23:06.77 So you see there is hope for my friend. 00:23:06.80\00:23:10.23 The apostate can be reached if after suffering 00:23:10.26\00:23:13.64 the consequences of his faithless actions 00:23:13.67\00:23:16.29 his heart has not become so hardened 00:23:16.32\00:23:19.55 that he continues to resist the Holy Spirit. 00:23:19.58\00:23:23.01 Unfortunately, there are far more examples 00:23:23.04\00:23:25.86 of stony hearted apostates who do not sense a need 00:23:25.89\00:23:30.09 to humble themselves in return to God. 00:23:30.12\00:23:32.85 These will be recipients of His wrath on the Day of Judgment. 00:23:32.88\00:23:37.31 Hebrews 10:31 says, "It is a fearful thing 00:23:37.34\00:23:41.54 to fall into the hands of the Living God." 00:23:41.57\00:23:44.36 Why? Look at Hebrews 10:28 and 30-- 00:23:44.39\00:23:48.26 Excuse me, 28 and 29. 00:23:48.29\00:23:50.35 "Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy 00:23:50.38\00:23:54.58 on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 00:23:54.61\00:23:57.34 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, 00:23:57.37\00:24:00.31 will he be thought worthy who has trampled 00:24:00.34\00:24:03.25 the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood 00:24:03.28\00:24:06.39 of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, 00:24:06.42\00:24:11.49 and insulted the Spirit of grace?" 00:24:11.52\00:24:18.08 You know, the Christian should not insult Christ 00:24:18.11\00:24:22.21 and the Sprit of grace by walking in the darkness of sin. 00:24:22.24\00:24:27.00 Ephesians 5:8-11 says this, 00:24:27.03\00:24:30.87 "For you were once darkness, 00:24:30.90\00:24:34.40 but now you are light in the Lord. 00:24:34.43\00:24:38.23 Walk as children of light for the fruit of the Spirit 00:24:38.26\00:24:42.63 is in all goodness, righteousness, 00:24:42.66\00:24:46.08 and truth, finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 00:24:46.11\00:24:51.34 And have no fellowship 00:24:51.37\00:24:53.02 with the unfruitful works of darkness." 00:24:53.05\00:24:57.62 If we walk in the light of God's word 00:24:57.65\00:25:00.81 with a heart that is renewed by the quickening grace 00:25:00.84\00:25:05.01 of Christ's righteousness, we will remain faithful 00:25:05.04\00:25:08.76 to our Lord and He will remain faithful to--to us. 00:25:08.79\00:25:13.57 We will not be counted among those 00:25:13.60\00:25:16.13 who insult the Holy Sprit and draw back to perdition. 00:25:16.16\00:25:20.32 We will be numbered among those 00:25:20.35\00:25:23.26 who believe unto the salvation of our souls. 00:25:23.29\00:25:26.85 We will guard the precious gift of grace. 00:25:26.88\00:25:30.60 Now I want to take just a moment 00:25:30.63\00:25:32.88 to stop and to pray for you because I know 00:25:32.91\00:25:38.32 that there are many people who are watching, 00:25:38.35\00:25:40.91 many people who are hearing my voice, 00:25:40.94\00:25:43.63 who grew up as I did thinking you can't please God, 00:25:43.66\00:25:49.22 who grew up thinking, "I give up, I've-- 00:25:49.25\00:25:53.62 I've gone to church all my life, but there is no pleasing Him." 00:25:53.65\00:25:58.30 Let me tell you something. 00:25:58.33\00:25:59.70 God is in the business of salvation. 00:25:59.73\00:26:03.25 Salvation belongs to God. 00:26:03.28\00:26:05.38 And He wants more than anything 00:26:05.41\00:26:08.52 as He touched the life of Manasseh, 00:26:08.55\00:26:12.22 when Manasseh turned back to Him 00:26:12.25\00:26:14.06 and He restored all things to Manasseh. 00:26:14.09\00:26:16.79 As the prodigal son was welcomed with open arms, 00:26:16.82\00:26:22.84 God wants to touch your life. 00:26:22.87\00:26:26.65 We need to remember that grace is the divine gifts 00:26:26.68\00:26:33.81 bestowed by a God of infinite love and these gifts 00:26:33.84\00:26:38.85 have supernatural power for salvation. 00:26:38.88\00:26:42.27 It's His divine assistance. 00:26:42.30\00:26:44.88 It is God who has given us Jesus Christ, 00:26:44.91\00:26:49.35 the Holy Sprit, and the Word to work in us to willing to act. 00:26:49.38\00:26:54.22 So let's pray. 00:26:54.25\00:26:55.62 Heavenly Father, I ask in the name of Jesus 00:26:55.65\00:26:58.68 on behalf of myself and my brothers and sisters. 00:26:58.71\00:27:01.92 Oh, Lord, we come to You.
