Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 Do you know how the Holy Spirit applies God's word 00:00:02.80\00:00:05.79 as the launderer's soap to sanctify us? 00:00:05.82\00:00:08.92 Join us now to learn what the bible says about this. 00:00:08.95\00:00:12.67 Welcome to "The Grace Pipeline." 00:00:33.02\00:00:35.22 This is a Bible study series 00:00:35.25\00:00:37.01 that is based on a book by the same title. 00:00:37.04\00:00:40.17 And if you're following along in your companion book, 00:00:40.20\00:00:43.43 today we're going to continue 00:00:43.46\00:00:45.11 our study on the launderer's soap. 00:00:45.14\00:00:48.05 We're beginning in chapter 8, page 122. 00:00:48.08\00:00:51.68 In previous programs, we have studied how the Father, 00:00:51.71\00:00:55.19 the Son, and the Holy Spirit work to sanctify us, 00:00:55.22\00:00:59.15 to set us apart from sin. 00:00:59.18\00:01:01.69 Today, we will learn the power of sanctifying grace 00:01:01.72\00:01:05.13 that is ours also, through the Scriptures 00:01:05.16\00:01:08.09 applied to our daily lives by the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:01:08.12\00:01:12.29 The secret to sanctification 00:01:12.32\00:01:15.10 is to learn to live in this power of surrender. 00:01:15.13\00:01:19.10 Let me explain. 00:01:19.13\00:01:20.50 One day when I was praying, 00:01:20.53\00:01:22.55 I was wrestling with the Lord like the patriarch Jacob had. 00:01:22.58\00:01:26.18 And I cried out and I said, "Please, Lord, 00:01:26.21\00:01:29.00 show me how to walk in surrender as Jesus walked. 00:01:29.03\00:01:32.48 I will not let you go unless you bless me 00:01:32.51\00:01:35.32 with a changed character, 00:01:35.35\00:01:37.21 cause me to follow in Christ's footsteps." 00:01:37.24\00:01:40.69 And instantly in my mind, 00:01:40.72\00:01:42.65 I saw this gigantic elephant and next to him 00:01:42.68\00:01:46.07 was a tiny little sugar ant, hardly visible. 00:01:46.10\00:01:49.82 As I wondered what this meant, 00:01:49.85\00:01:52.17 I suddenly heard the still small voice of the Lord 00:01:52.20\00:01:55.54 whisper a thought to my mind. 00:01:55.57\00:01:58.22 And He said, "Shelley, 00:01:58.25\00:01:59.62 the greatest strength you can muster 00:01:59.65\00:02:02.09 is like that of the tiny ant, whereas My power 00:02:02.12\00:02:06.39 is by comparison like that of the elephant. 00:02:06.42\00:02:09.65 Why would you want to walk in your limited human strength 00:02:09.68\00:02:14.49 when I make My power available to you? 00:02:14.52\00:02:17.46 When I ask you to surrender, child, 00:02:17.49\00:02:20.29 I'm asking you to accept My power." 00:02:20.32\00:02:25.14 Galatians 3:3 suddenly came to my mind 00:02:25.17\00:02:28.03 where Paul asks-- he said, 00:02:28.06\00:02:29.75 "You foolish, Galatians. 00:02:29.78\00:02:31.56 Having begun in the Spirit, 00:02:31.59\00:02:33.64 are you now being made perfect by the flesh?" 00:02:33.67\00:02:37.43 Yes, I had been so foolish 00:02:37.46\00:02:39.67 trying my utmost to walk with God. 00:02:39.70\00:02:41.86 I had been drawing only on my own sugar ant strength. 00:02:41.89\00:02:46.17 It was like that tiny insect 00:02:46.20\00:02:48.48 trying to roll a boulder up a hill. 00:02:48.51\00:02:51.56 But now I realize each morning of my life, 00:02:51.59\00:02:54.59 I face a decision which determines 00:02:54.62\00:02:57.48 whether I walk as a pitiful 00:02:57.51\00:02:59.67 or a powerful Christian that day. 00:02:59.70\00:03:02.49 If I attempt to perfect my walk 00:03:02.52\00:03:06.00 by the strength of my flesh 00:03:06.03\00:03:07.66 I am to be pitied as I limp along, 00:03:07.69\00:03:10.72 hobbled by self-destructive habits. 00:03:10.75\00:03:13.41 But if I choose to walk in the power of the Spirit, 00:03:13.44\00:03:16.96 I can run the race of faith with joy. 00:03:16.99\00:03:20.49 To be yoked to Christ is to be yoked 00:03:20.52\00:03:23.68 to that elephantine power of the Holy Spirit. 00:03:23.71\00:03:28.12 So in your mind's eye, 00:03:28.15\00:03:30.30 just get an image of that for just a moment. 00:03:30.33\00:03:33.72 A sugar ant yoked to an elephant. 00:03:33.75\00:03:36.81 Who's carrying the load? 00:03:36.84\00:03:38.80 Can you see that tiny little ant 00:03:38.83\00:03:40.73 with its tiny little legs squirming about, 00:03:40.76\00:03:44.43 demanding to be released so that he could 00:03:44.46\00:03:46.64 perform the task of rolling the boulder on his own? 00:03:46.67\00:03:50.64 How often have we insisted on having our own way 00:03:50.67\00:03:54.28 and reaped the exhausting and empty results? 00:03:54.31\00:03:57.92 It is not by might or power, 00:03:57.95\00:04:00.47 but by the Spirit of the Lord 00:04:00.50\00:04:02.26 that we can live the life of a Christian. 00:04:02.29\00:04:05.34 Our greatest human strength 00:04:05.37\00:04:07.60 is comparable to that of the little sugar ant. 00:04:07.63\00:04:10.60 Only the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit 00:04:10.63\00:04:13.84 will suffice unto salvation. 00:04:13.87\00:04:17.33 Now as we consider what our loving Lord has done for us, 00:04:17.36\00:04:21.35 it should create in us a thirst for righteousness. 00:04:21.38\00:04:25.82 If we continually draw from God's well of salvation, 00:04:25.85\00:04:30.29 the living water of the Holy Spirit 00:04:30.32\00:04:32.74 will fulfill our need. 00:04:32.77\00:04:34.42 And His sparkling presence flowing through us 00:04:34.45\00:04:38.25 will cleanse away sin's influence. 00:04:38.28\00:04:41.80 His revitalizing power will live-- 00:04:41.83\00:04:45.13 help us to live a life of righteousness 00:04:45.16\00:04:48.41 as we daily choose to die 00:04:48.44\00:04:50.85 to self-interests and live for God. 00:04:50.88\00:04:55.05 Isaiah spoke of God's tender care for His people 00:04:55.08\00:04:58.59 saying in Isaiah 63:9 that, 00:04:58.62\00:05:02.30 "God lifted them up and carried them all the days of old." 00:05:02.33\00:05:07.70 You know, God's method of salvation by grace 00:05:07.73\00:05:10.46 remains the same today as in the days of old. 00:05:10.49\00:05:14.12 And obedience is also still a factor. 00:05:14.15\00:05:17.19 Romans 6, tells us that, 00:05:17.22\00:05:19.22 "Obedience leads to righteousness." 00:05:19.25\00:05:22.39 When we are yoked with the Lord, 00:05:22.42\00:05:24.66 our life of obedience is not a struggle. 00:05:24.69\00:05:28.65 Sanctifying grace grants us a treasury of power, 00:05:28.68\00:05:33.00 God's power to overcome our rebellious tendencies 00:05:33.03\00:05:37.11 and to walk in righteousness, resulting in peace. 00:05:37.14\00:05:41.49 Listen to the echo of God's love 00:05:41.52\00:05:43.63 as He calls us to obedience by grace in Isaiah 48:18. 00:05:43.66\00:05:51.63 He says, "Oh, that you had heeded My commandments. 00:05:51.66\00:05:55.97 Then your peace would have been like a river, 00:05:56.00\00:05:59.00 and your righteousness like the waves of the sea." 00:05:59.03\00:06:04.27 God's commandments embody the essence of His grace, 00:06:04.30\00:06:09.22 for He empowers us to do all that He requires of us. 00:06:09.25\00:06:14.13 The apostle Paul clearly identified the Holy Spirit 00:06:14.16\00:06:18.70 as a sustaining grace of sanctification, 00:06:18.73\00:06:21.83 pointing to Him as our only hope 00:06:21.86\00:06:24.71 to overcome the carnal mind. 00:06:24.74\00:06:26.97 In Romans 8:7-10, Paul wrote, 00:06:27.00\00:06:31.33 "The carnal mind is enmity against God, 00:06:31.36\00:06:35.13 for it is not subject to the law of God, nor can it be. 00:06:35.16\00:06:39.32 So then those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 00:06:39.35\00:06:43.61 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, 00:06:43.64\00:06:47.16 if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. 00:06:47.19\00:06:50.93 Now if anyone does not have 00:06:50.96\00:06:53.09 the Spirit of Christ, He is not His. 00:06:53.12\00:06:56.50 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, 00:06:56.53\00:07:01.52 but the Spirit is life because of righteousness." 00:07:01.55\00:07:07.07 We need to pray for the Holy Spirit. 00:07:07.10\00:07:11.13 You're most likely familiar with Luke 11:9 00:07:11.16\00:07:14.64 where Jesus asks us or instructs us 00:07:14.67\00:07:18.13 to "Ask, to seek, and to knock." 00:07:18.16\00:07:20.90 Now in the original Greek language, 00:07:20.93\00:07:23.22 these are linear verbs. 00:07:23.25\00:07:25.37 They just keep going in a straight line without end. 00:07:25.40\00:07:29.31 So that Luke 11:9 is better translated, 00:07:29.34\00:07:32.69 ask and keep on asking and it shall be given to you. 00:07:32.72\00:07:36.46 Seek and keep on seeking and you shall find. 00:07:36.49\00:07:40.49 Knock and keep on knocking 00:07:40.52\00:07:43.20 and the door shall be opened to you. 00:07:43.23\00:07:46.03 And then a few verses later, 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.43 Jesus tells us what we are to ask for, 00:07:47.46\00:07:50.78 saying in Luke 11:13, 00:07:50.81\00:07:53.48 "How much more will your heavenly Father 00:07:53.51\00:07:56.51 give the Holy Spirit to those who ask," 00:07:56.54\00:08:00.31 and continue to ask Him. 00:08:00.34\00:08:03.35 Who can receive the Spirit? 00:08:03.38\00:08:06.55 Acts 5:32 tells us something interesting. 00:08:06.58\00:08:10.05 It says, "We are His witnesses to these things, 00:08:10.08\00:08:14.12 and so also is the Holy Spirit 00:08:14.15\00:08:16.17 whom God has given to those who obey Him." 00:08:16.20\00:08:22.30 You see, when we walk in Spirit empowered obedience, 00:08:22.33\00:08:26.58 God makes grace abound by giving us 00:08:26.61\00:08:30.00 a greater measure of His Spirit. 00:08:30.03\00:08:32.00 Let me offer this illustration to explain. 00:08:32.03\00:08:35.65 If you took a gallon jar and you filled it 00:08:35.68\00:08:38.10 with extremely muddied water, 00:08:38.13\00:08:40.40 then you poured out a fourth of its contents 00:08:40.43\00:08:42.97 and you added sparkling water to replace that. 00:08:43.00\00:08:45.99 You would be left with a less muddied mixture. 00:08:46.02\00:08:49.52 If you again poured out a fourth of the mixture 00:08:49.55\00:08:52.11 and added more sparkling water, 00:08:52.14\00:08:53.81 the contents would become still clear. 00:08:53.84\00:08:57.03 And through repetition of this process, 00:08:57.06\00:09:00.35 you would eventually achieve a container of pure water. 00:09:00.38\00:09:04.87 In like manner, only to the degree 00:09:04.90\00:09:06.90 that we're emptied of self, 00:09:06.93\00:09:09.12 can we be filled with the Spirit. 00:09:09.15\00:09:12.03 His inward work of grace will change our outward walk. 00:09:12.06\00:09:18.77 There's only one man who has walked this earth 00:09:18.80\00:09:22.13 possessing the Spirit without measure and that was Jesus. 00:09:22.16\00:09:26.46 In John 3:34, Bible says, 00:09:26.49\00:09:30.98 "For since He whom God sent speaks the words of God," 00:09:31.01\00:09:35.38 proclaims God's own message. 00:09:35.41\00:09:37.62 "God does not give him 00:09:37.65\00:09:39.02 His Spirit sparingly or by measure. 00:09:39.05\00:09:42.07 But boundless is the gift God makes of His Spirit." 00:09:42.10\00:09:46.55 Christ was filled with the fullness of the Spirit 00:09:46.58\00:09:50.40 because He walked in perfect obedience. 00:09:50.43\00:09:53.67 And out of His fullness we receive grace upon grace, 00:09:53.70\00:09:59.17 one spiritual blessing heaped on top of another, 00:09:59.20\00:10:03.09 as we walk in obedience to His truths. 00:10:03.12\00:10:06.20 You know, John 1:1-4 and then verse 14, 00:10:06.23\00:10:11.17 the Apostle writes, "In the beginning was the Word 00:10:11.20\00:10:14.16 and the Word was with God and the Word was God. 00:10:14.19\00:10:18.07 And all things were made through Him. 00:10:18.10\00:10:20.98 In Him was life and that life was the light of men. 00:10:21.01\00:10:25.43 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, 00:10:25.46\00:10:29.06 and we beheld His glory, 00:10:29.09\00:10:30.85 the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, 00:10:30.88\00:10:35.59 full of grace and truth." 00:10:35.62\00:10:39.70 According to rabbinical tradition, 00:10:39.73\00:10:43.13 light was a name for the Messiah, 00:10:43.16\00:10:45.96 for light dwells with Him. 00:10:45.99\00:10:47.90 In John 8:12, Jesus-- 00:10:47.93\00:10:51.40 He's at the ceremony of lights 00:10:51.43\00:10:53.24 on the first day of the Feast of the Tabernacles. 00:10:53.27\00:10:56.04 And He stood in the temple court and He cried out, 00:10:56.07\00:10:59.59 "I am the light of the world. 00:10:59.62\00:11:02.60 He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness 00:11:02.63\00:11:06.35 but will have the light of life." 00:11:06.38\00:11:09.15 It is fitting that the word light 00:11:09.18\00:11:11.47 is also symbolic for the written word of God. 00:11:11.50\00:11:15.04 For it emanates from the living 00:11:15.07\00:11:17.35 Lord Jesus Christ and brings life. 00:11:17.38\00:11:20.47 Psalm 119:105 says, "God's word is a lamp to our feet 00:11:20.50\00:11:26.00 and a light to our path." 00:11:26.03\00:11:27.90 And in a world that is shrouded with the darkness of sin, 00:11:27.93\00:11:32.48 we need the light of life to guide us 00:11:32.51\00:11:36.49 to the narrow gate of salvation. 00:11:36.52\00:11:39.22 The power of sanctifying grace is ours through Scripture. 00:11:39.25\00:11:44.07 When the light of His word operates in our heart, 00:11:44.10\00:11:48.03 it separates us from the darkness of sin. 00:11:48.06\00:11:51.28 In other words, Scripture sanctifies us 00:11:51.31\00:11:54.93 just as Jesus prayed in John 17:17. 00:11:54.96\00:11:59.21 He said, "Sanctify them by Your truth. 00:11:59.24\00:12:03.14 Your word is truth." 00:12:03.17\00:12:06.60 There in the garden of Gethsemane 00:12:06.63\00:12:08.97 with His eyes lifted to heaven 00:12:09.00\00:12:11.30 and His disciples surrounding Him, 00:12:11.33\00:12:13.78 Christ prayed that all of His followers 00:12:13.81\00:12:17.34 would be sanctified by God's word. 00:12:17.37\00:12:20.36 He knew the word was a living and active force. 00:12:20.39\00:12:24.19 He had sspoken the world 00:12:24.22\00:12:26.10 into existence by His power filled word. 00:12:26.13\00:12:30.18 Christ alone understood the coming event of Calvary 00:12:30.21\00:12:34.09 and His sacrifice would open the way 00:12:34.12\00:12:36.53 to restore our relationship with the Father. 00:12:36.56\00:12:40.15 But He knew the work of salvation 00:12:40.18\00:12:42.39 would continue beyond the cross. 00:12:42.42\00:12:45.87 Remnants of our old carnal nature 00:12:45.90\00:12:48.59 remain after the new birth experience, 00:12:48.62\00:12:51.28 so Christ knew we would need greater power 00:12:51.31\00:12:54.30 to renew our minds and be rid of bad habits. 00:12:54.33\00:12:58.77 Christ was aware that only 00:12:58.80\00:13:01.45 the transforming power of God's truth 00:13:01.48\00:13:04.04 could complete His work of sanctification 00:13:04.07\00:13:06.90 to liberate us from sin's bondage. 00:13:06.93\00:13:09.54 He said in John 8:31-32, 00:13:09.57\00:13:12.60 "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 00:13:12.63\00:13:17.00 And then you shall know the truth, 00:13:17.03\00:13:19.21 and the truth shall make you free." 00:13:19.24\00:13:21.57 Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:15-17 that, 00:13:21.60\00:13:25.83 "The Holy Scriptures are able to make us 00:13:25.86\00:13:29.61 wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." 00:13:29.64\00:13:34.40 He confirmed that, "All Scripture 00:13:34.43\00:13:36.70 is given by inspiration of God 00:13:36.73\00:13:40.21 and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, 00:13:40.24\00:13:44.59 for instruction in righteousness 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.85 that the Christian may be complete 00:13:46.88\00:13:49.41 and thoroughly equipped in every good work." 00:13:49.44\00:13:52.39 Paul also wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:16 that, 00:13:52.42\00:13:57.65 "We have the mind of Christ." 00:13:57.68\00:14:01.70 What a gift the God inspired Scriptures are to us. 00:14:01.73\00:14:06.43 They equip us with divine power 00:14:06.46\00:14:09.05 for salvation through Christ our wisdom. 00:14:09.08\00:14:12.83 He gave us His word that we may know His mind. 00:14:12.86\00:14:17.08 So the more we saturate our minds with Scripture, 00:14:17.11\00:14:20.38 the more we will operate with the mind of Christ. 00:14:20.41\00:14:23.95 If we meet the condition, 00:14:23.98\00:14:25.92 the promise of James 1:21 is ours and here's what it says, 00:14:25.95\00:14:31.79 "Therefore lay aside all filthiness 00:14:31.82\00:14:34.97 and overflow of wickedness, 00:14:35.00\00:14:37.08 and receive with meekness the implanted word, 00:14:37.11\00:14:41.37 which is able to save your souls." 00:14:41.40\00:14:46.24 As you read the Scriptures, 00:14:46.27\00:14:48.30 pray that God will sanctify you by His word. 00:14:48.33\00:14:51.96 The word planted and rooted in your heart, 00:14:51.99\00:14:55.04 mysteriously grows with this divine cause 00:14:55.07\00:14:58.88 of cleansing us of sin 00:14:58.91\00:15:00.98 and recreating Christ' righteous character in us. 00:15:01.01\00:15:04.98 Jesus compared this process to planting seed 00:15:05.01\00:15:08.52 in good ground that sprouts 00:15:08.55\00:15:11.62 and it grows to yield a hundred fold return. 00:15:11.65\00:15:15.55 Our work is to plant the word, God's word. 00:15:15.58\00:15:20.15 And then God's work is to give the increase of growth. 00:15:20.18\00:15:24.60 The divine affects of the word 00:15:24.63\00:15:26.84 begin to work over a period of time 00:15:26.87\00:15:29.05 without our conscious awareness. 00:15:29.08\00:15:31.41 We plant a promise of God 00:15:31.44\00:15:33.53 that one day as Christ said in Mark 4-28, 00:15:33.56\00:15:36.52 "It yields a crop by itself, first the blade, then the head, 00:15:36.55\00:15:41.79 and then the full grain in the head." 00:15:41.82\00:15:44.09 First our thoughts are changed, 00:15:44.12\00:15:46.40 then our actions, and finally our habits. 00:15:46.43\00:15:51.50 Scripture points out our sins 00:15:51.53\00:15:54.17 and the pledge of God's sure promise is to change us, 00:15:54.20\00:15:58.75 correcting our misguided path 00:15:58.78\00:16:00.79 by revealing the better way of His righteousness. 00:16:00.82\00:16:04.27 Our personal application of the word 00:16:04.30\00:16:07.20 causes it to be rooted in our heart. 00:16:07.23\00:16:09.24 And it springs forth under the operation 00:16:09.27\00:16:12.01 of God's sanctifying power to set us apart from sin. 00:16:12.04\00:16:16.67 Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. 00:16:16.70\00:16:19.16 Paul said in Ephesians 5:25-27, 00:16:19.19\00:16:24.16 "That He might sanctify and cleanse her 00:16:24.19\00:16:27.08 with the washing of water by the word, 00:16:27.11\00:16:30.83 so that He could present her without spot or wrinkle, 00:16:30.86\00:16:34.75 making her holy and without blemish." 00:16:34.78\00:16:37.58 This process of God's work and sanctification 00:16:37.61\00:16:41.46 is expressed in Malachi 3:2 where it says. 00:16:41.49\00:16:46.60 "He is like a refiner's fire and like lauderer's soap." 00:16:46.63\00:16:53.44 Scripture is the launderer's soap. 00:16:53.47\00:16:57.13 The living water of the Holy Spirit 00:16:57.16\00:17:00.09 works to help us comprehend God's spiritual words 00:17:00.12\00:17:03.88 and to put the word into daily practice. 00:17:03.91\00:17:07.40 He applies Scripture to scrub away the soil of sin. 00:17:07.43\00:17:11.74 Then He flows through us 00:17:11.77\00:17:13.43 to achieve a purifying and spotless rinse 00:17:13.46\00:17:17.40 that we may be rid of sin's residue. 00:17:17.43\00:17:20.47 And as these two divine agents of grace work in harmony 00:17:20.50\00:17:24.89 to empower our actions of faith, 00:17:24.92\00:17:28.08 we develop the mind of Christ. 00:17:28.11\00:17:30.77 And we learn what to do as 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us, 00:17:30.80\00:17:36.43 "That we learn to take every thought captive 00:17:36.46\00:17:39.36 and make it obedient to Christ." 00:17:39.39\00:17:42.83 We become one with Him in thought, purpose, and action. 00:17:42.86\00:17:48.11 This is where James tells us in 1:22 that--he says, 00:17:48.14\00:17:52.51 "But be doers of the word, 00:17:52.54\00:17:55.60 not just hearers only, deceiving yourself." 00:17:55.63\00:17:59.68 You know, James explains that as we look into the word, 00:17:59.71\00:18:04.32 we see a reflection of our unappealing natural self. 00:18:04.35\00:18:09.32 Yet through the pledge of God's promises, 00:18:09.35\00:18:12.23 we see also the reflection of the new creation, 00:18:12.26\00:18:16.89 the new creature that we are in Christ. 00:18:16.92\00:18:19.60 Now if we walk away from the mirror of the word 00:18:19.63\00:18:22.83 without putting it into practice 00:18:22.86\00:18:25.06 we have our newly recreated image, 00:18:25.09\00:18:28.54 we just forget about it and there's no change 00:18:28.57\00:18:31.54 that takes place in our character. 00:18:31.57\00:18:33.87 If we disregard the Scriptures, 00:18:33.90\00:18:36.43 our spiritual growth is retarded. 00:18:36.46\00:18:39.66 That's why Christ asked in Luke 6:46. 00:18:39.69\00:18:44.59 He says, "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' 00:18:44.62\00:18:47.96 and do not practice what I tell you?" 00:18:47.99\00:18:50.80 And then He said in Luke 11:28, 00:18:50.83\00:18:53.66 "Blessed are those who hear the word of God 00:18:53.69\00:18:57.27 and obey and practice." 00:18:57.30\00:19:00.70 May God help us appreciate His word 00:19:00.73\00:19:04.42 as a great preservative from evil 00:19:04.45\00:19:07.51 and an even greater force for change 00:19:07.54\00:19:09.87 as we accept it by faith. 00:19:09.90\00:19:12.72 Faith without actions is dead. 00:19:12.75\00:19:15.25 But God promises to bless the one 00:19:15.28\00:19:18.55 who puts His word into practice. 00:19:18.58\00:19:20.62 And we can put into practice 00:19:20.65\00:19:22.82 what we behold from the bible and be transformed. 00:19:22.85\00:19:26.76 Let me read you from 2 Corinthians 3:18 and it says, 00:19:26.79\00:19:32.16 "And all of us, as with unveiled face, 00:19:32.19\00:19:35.99 because we continued to behold 00:19:36.02\00:19:38.40 in the Word of God as in a mirror the glory of God, 00:19:38.43\00:19:42.76 are constantly being transfigured," 00:19:42.79\00:19:45.21 or transformed, "into His very own image 00:19:45.24\00:19:49.17 in ever increasing splendor 00:19:49.20\00:19:51.93 and from one degree of glory to another, 00:19:51.96\00:19:54.81 for this comes from the Lord Who is the Spirit." 00:19:54.84\00:19:59.60 What does this Scripture tell us? 00:19:59.63\00:20:01.98 It tells us that we become what we behold. 00:20:02.01\00:20:05.68 And as we behold the character of Christ in the word of God, 00:20:05.71\00:20:10.88 the Holy Spirit applies 00:20:10.91\00:20:12.94 the transforming power of Scripture 00:20:12.97\00:20:15.32 in the work of sanctification. 00:20:15.35\00:20:17.78 Step by step, He works with us to develop our character, 00:20:17.81\00:20:22.93 taking us from one level of Christ's glory 00:20:22.96\00:20:26.84 or His character to the next level. 00:20:26.87\00:20:29.99 The renewal of our mind fulfills our destiny 00:20:30.02\00:20:33.95 to be conformed to the image of Jesus. 00:20:33.98\00:20:36.58 Let me show you another powerful promise. 00:20:36.61\00:20:38.94 This is 2 Peter 1:3-4, one of my favorites and it reads, 00:20:38.97\00:20:45.83 "His divine power has given to us 00:20:45.86\00:20:49.28 all things that pertain to life and godliness, 00:20:49.31\00:20:53.72 through the knowledge of Him 00:20:53.75\00:20:55.82 who called us by glory and virtue, by which," 00:20:55.85\00:20:59.84 by His glory and virtue, "have been given to us 00:20:59.87\00:21:03.93 exceedingly great and precious promises 00:21:03.96\00:21:08.09 so that through these," through these promises, 00:21:08.12\00:21:12.24 "you may be partakers of the divine nature, 00:21:12.27\00:21:15.52 having escaped the corruption 00:21:15.55\00:21:18.16 that is in the world through lust." 00:21:18.19\00:21:21.24 Wow, I love this promise. 00:21:21.27\00:21:23.27 He's saying by the glory and virtue of God 00:21:23.30\00:21:25.74 and through His divine power of grace, 00:21:25.77\00:21:29.48 we've been given marvelous promises 00:21:29.51\00:21:32.09 of all He will accomplish according to His perfect will, 00:21:32.12\00:21:36.08 if we grant Him permission. 00:21:36.11\00:21:39.16 And we become partakers of His divine nature 00:21:39.19\00:21:43.51 through His promises, through the word. 00:21:43.54\00:21:46.29 2 Corinthians 1:20 tells us that, 00:21:46.32\00:21:49.02 "All of God's promises are ours," 00:21:49.05\00:21:51.72 if we abide in Christ. 00:21:51.75\00:21:54.44 So through a personal faith application of these promises 00:21:54.47\00:21:58.92 that contain the power of God unto salvation 00:21:58.95\00:22:02.50 we share in His divine character. 00:22:02.53\00:22:05.88 Further, the sustaining power of His Spirit 00:22:05.91\00:22:09.72 and His word protects us from evil. 00:22:09.75\00:22:13.24 What a promise. 00:22:13.27\00:22:15.11 You know, the Lord provides everything necessary 00:22:15.14\00:22:18.93 for the development of our godliness. 00:22:18.96\00:22:21.68 His work of sanctification is our assurance of salvation. 00:22:21.71\00:22:27.20 God does His promised part and the apostle Peter tells-- 00:22:27.23\00:22:33.55 continues this passage to tell-- 00:22:33.58\00:22:35.99 explain to us that we must do our work, 00:22:36.02\00:22:39.03 our part in the work of sanctification. 00:22:39.06\00:22:41.55 Let's read that 2 Peter 1:5-9, continuing he says, 00:22:41.58\00:22:46.62 "But also for this very reason," 00:22:46.65\00:22:48.88 because God's provided everything to us." 00:22:48.91\00:22:51.49 He says, "Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, 00:22:51.52\00:22:56.20 knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, 00:22:56.23\00:23:00.08 brotherly kindness and love. 00:23:00.11\00:23:02.52 For if these things are yours and abound 00:23:02.55\00:23:06.77 you will be neither barren nor unfruitful 00:23:06.80\00:23:10.88 in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:23:10.91\00:23:14.33 For he who lacks these things 00:23:14.36\00:23:16.93 is shortsighted, even to blindness, 00:23:16.96\00:23:20.77 and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 00:23:20.80\00:23:25.85 Therefore, be even more diligent 00:23:25.88\00:23:29.67 to make your call and election sure." 00:23:29.70\00:23:33.76 He uses "diligence' twice in this Scripture passage. 00:23:33.79\00:23:37.56 And here Peter is reinforcing 00:23:37.59\00:23:40.21 God's principle of required obedience, 00:23:40.24\00:23:43.85 warning that whoever forgets 00:23:43.88\00:23:46.46 the cost of grace, the agony of Calvary 00:23:46.49\00:23:50.24 by which we were justified from our past sins, 00:23:50.27\00:23:53.50 whoever forgets the cost of grace is blinded 00:23:53.53\00:23:57.04 to the needful work of sanctification. 00:23:57.07\00:24:01.11 He concluded his letter with a description 00:24:01.14\00:24:05.17 of the fiery destruction of this world 00:24:05.20\00:24:08.40 and with a promise of the new earth 00:24:08.43\00:24:11.67 in which righteousness dwells. 00:24:11.70\00:24:14.09 He ends with this admonition 00:24:14.12\00:24:17.07 in 2 Peter 3:14, 17 and 18, 00:24:17.10\00:24:23.02 "Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, 00:24:23.05\00:24:27.59 be diligent to be found by Him in peace, 00:24:27.62\00:24:32.59 without spot and blameless, 00:24:32.62\00:24:35.42 beware lest you also fall from your own steadfasteness, 00:24:35.45\00:24:39.82 being led away with the error of the wicked, 00:24:39.85\00:24:43.52 but grow in the grace and knowledge 00:24:43.55\00:24:47.10 of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." 00:24:47.13\00:24:51.45 If you desire an abiding and connected relationship 00:24:51.48\00:24:55.98 with Jesus Christ, the living Word, 00:24:56.01\00:24:59.16 develop an abiding relationship 00:24:59.19\00:25:02.24 with the bible, the written word. 00:25:02.27\00:25:05.28 This action is vital to grow in grace. 00:25:05.31\00:25:09.84 The sanctifying power of Scripture 00:25:09.87\00:25:12.91 will affect a moral influence on your heart and your habits. 00:25:12.94\00:25:17.57 His word works to restore His image, 00:25:17.60\00:25:22.02 to restore His mind and His character in you. 00:25:22.05\00:25:26.77 The ultimate perfection of your character 00:25:26.80\00:25:29.91 comes by the gift of the Holy Scriptures, 00:25:29.94\00:25:33.46 as the power of the Holy Spirit 00:25:33.49\00:25:36.08 strengthens you to put them into practice. 00:25:36.11\00:25:39.66 Let me read for you from Hebrews 10:35 and 36, 00:25:39.69\00:25:46.54 which says, "Therefore do not cast away your confidence, 00:25:46.57\00:25:52.50 which has great reward. 00:25:52.53\00:25:54.82 For you have need of endurance, 00:25:54.85\00:25:57.22 so that after you have done the will of God, 00:25:57.25\00:26:00.91 you may receive the promise." 00:26:00.94\00:26:05.04 God's love is unconditional, 00:26:05.07\00:26:07.87 but He sets parameters around His promises. 00:26:07.90\00:26:11.38 First, we must be in Christ 00:26:11.41\00:26:14.01 to be given His promised blessings. 00:26:14.04\00:26:16.74 This means we are obliged to surrender our will to God 00:26:16.77\00:26:21.79 and allow Jesus to live in our hearts by faith 00:26:21.82\00:26:25.89 through the infilling of the Holy Spirit. 00:26:25.92\00:26:29.10 Secondly, we receive God's promises through faith alone 00:26:29.13\00:26:34.06 which we will further consider in our next program. 00:26:34.09\00:26:38.60 Finally, we must be-- walk in obedience. 00:26:38.63\00:26:43.80 Obedience to God's will to receive 00:26:43.83\00:26:46.63 His promise of eternal life. 00:26:46.66\00:26:49.29 Readiness to obey shows we are living 00:26:49.32\00:26:53.14 in a right relationship with our heavenly Father. 00:26:53.17\00:26:56.67 As we comply with God's conditions 00:26:56.70\00:26:59.70 becoming sanctification seekers. 00:26:59.73\00:27:03.39 We can be
