Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn. 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.04 If righteousness is by faith 00:00:03.07\00:00:04.96 and I believe with all of my heart 00:00:04.99\00:00:07.09 that righteousness by faith 00:00:07.12\00:00:08.63 is the only true righteousness there is. 00:00:08.66\00:00:11.75 Then, why did the Apostle Paul 00:00:11.78\00:00:14.03 write that "obedience leads to righteousness?" 00:00:14.06\00:00:17.31 Join us now on "The Grace Pipeline." 00:00:17.34\00:00:19.69 As we uncover the answer to this question and more. 00:00:19.72\00:00:23.34 Welcome to "The Grace Pipeline." 00:00:44.11\00:00:46.33 In this series, we are learning that salvation belongs to God. 00:00:46.36\00:00:49.94 And there is nothing that we can do, to save ourselves. 00:00:49.97\00:00:54.41 We have spent four episodes talking about the grace of God, 00:00:54.44\00:00:59.34 who provides our justification by faith. 00:00:59.37\00:01:02.99 In our last program, we began to examine, 00:01:03.02\00:01:05.79 how grace plays a key role in sanctification. 00:01:05.82\00:01:09.98 Today, we will continue with the topic of sanctification 00:01:10.01\00:01:13.70 which means simply to be set apart for God and made holy. 00:01:13.73\00:01:18.79 And we will begin to see, 00:01:18.82\00:01:20.52 how we can live a life of victorious obedience to God. 00:01:20.55\00:01:25.66 If you're following along in the series companion book, 00:01:25.69\00:01:28.35 "The Grace Pipeline" our study today begins on page 95. 00:01:28.38\00:01:35.31 The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit 00:01:35.34\00:01:37.94 are actively involved in the grace of sanctification, 00:01:37.97\00:01:41.64 performing an inward spiritual work. 00:01:41.67\00:01:44.70 Primarily, through Christ imparted righteousness, 00:01:44.73\00:01:48.38 the renewal of the Holy Spirit, and the word of God. 00:01:48.41\00:01:52.76 Sanctification is the means by which 00:01:52.79\00:01:55.81 we become one with Him. 00:01:55.84\00:01:58.82 As Paul stated in 1 Corinthians 16:17, 00:01:58.85\00:02:02.31 "He who is joined the Lord is one spirit with Him." 00:02:02.34\00:02:07.31 As we are joined to the Lord, we partake of His divine nature. 00:02:07.34\00:02:11.91 He imparts His righteousness to us 00:02:11.94\00:02:14.72 through the Holy Spirit, through His word. 00:02:14.75\00:02:17.59 And this righteousness by faith 00:02:17.62\00:02:20.29 produces a mysterious transformation in our purpose, 00:02:20.32\00:02:24.56 our thoughts, and actions. 00:02:24.59\00:02:26.52 We know from Paul's letter to the Galatians 00:02:26.55\00:02:29.28 that they were misguided by Judaizers, 00:02:29.31\00:02:31.83 who placed their emphasis on the works of the law. 00:02:31.86\00:02:34.39 And the Galatians fell off into the ditch of salvation by works. 00:02:34.42\00:02:38.90 Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, 00:02:38.93\00:02:42.18 "Wide is the gate and broad is the way 00:02:42.21\00:02:44.96 that leads to destruction, 00:02:44.99\00:02:46.96 but the way that leads to eternal life is a narrow gate 00:02:46.99\00:02:51.65 and there are few who find it." 00:02:51.68\00:02:53.76 The devil doesn't care if he can get you off the narrow way 00:02:53.79\00:02:57.31 by making you fall to the right by becoming too legalistic, 00:02:57.34\00:03:02.22 or making you fall to the left 00:03:02.25\00:03:04.53 by enticing you to be too liberal. 00:03:04.56\00:03:07.08 When Paul learned, how the Galatians 00:03:07.11\00:03:09.36 had abandoned righteousness by faith. 00:03:09.39\00:03:12.40 He wrote to them with tender affection, 00:03:12.43\00:03:15.00 addressing them as his little children, 00:03:15.03\00:03:17.31 and in an expression of emotional agony 00:03:17.34\00:03:21.20 found in Galatians 4:19. 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.49 He compared it to trying to rebirth them in the truth, 00:03:23.52\00:03:28.31 until he writes quote, "Christ is formed in you." 00:03:28.34\00:03:34.26 More than any other gospel writer Paul, 00:03:34.29\00:03:38.00 God's ambassador of grace, thought that if Christ dwells 00:03:38.03\00:03:42.97 within our hearts through faith. 00:03:43.00\00:03:44.91 We develop the same love and mind of Christ. 00:03:44.94\00:03:49.51 And Jesus lives out 00:03:49.54\00:03:50.91 His own perfect life through our lives until, 00:03:50.94\00:03:54.19 we eventually reach the full stature of Christ. 00:03:54.22\00:03:58.42 Paul was constantly guarding grace, 00:03:58.45\00:04:00.88 teaching that receiving righteousness by faith 00:04:00.91\00:04:03.89 meant it wouldn't- 00:04:03.92\00:04:05.41 we would not try to save ourselves through works. 00:04:05.44\00:04:08.67 But that we would walk with Christ 00:04:08.70\00:04:10.60 in His path practicing righteousness. 00:04:10.63\00:04:13.62 He wrote in Colossians 2:6-10, "As you have therefore received 00:04:13.65\00:04:19.22 Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 00:04:19.25\00:04:22.27 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, 00:04:22.30\00:04:25.74 as you have been taught, 00:04:25.77\00:04:27.21 abounding in it with thanksgiving. 00:04:27.24\00:04:29.95 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy 00:04:29.98\00:04:33.14 and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, 00:04:33.17\00:04:36.25 according to the basic principles of the world, 00:04:36.28\00:04:39.56 and not according to Christ. 00:04:39.59\00:04:41.56 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, 00:04:41.59\00:04:46.46 and you are complete in Him, 00:04:46.49\00:04:48.70 who is the head of all principality and power." 00:04:48.73\00:04:54.07 Hallelujah! In Christ we are made complete. 00:04:54.10\00:04:57.77 1 Peter 2:24 says, "By His righteousness 00:04:57.80\00:05:01.21 we obtain a precious faith 00:05:01.24\00:05:03.46 that acknowledges we have died to sin 00:05:03.49\00:05:05.98 that we might live for righteousness." 00:05:06.01\00:05:08.58 If we accept the yoke of Christ and are united with Him, 00:05:08.61\00:05:12.60 our conduct cannot help, but to conform 00:05:12.63\00:05:15.40 to God's right way of being and doing. 00:05:15.43\00:05:18.73 We are made righteous by faith, 00:05:18.76\00:05:21.39 in order to practice righteousness by faith. 00:05:21.42\00:05:25.09 All of the Bible authors agree. 00:05:25.12\00:05:27.32 Let's consider the words of the Apostle John 00:05:27.35\00:05:30.76 who wrote in 1 John 2:29 and 3:7, 00:05:30.79\00:05:37.34 let's look at it. 00:05:37.37\00:05:39.11 In 1 John 2:29 he says, 00:05:39.14\00:05:41.61 "If you know that He is righteous, 00:05:41.64\00:05:44.14 you know that everyone who practices righteousness 00:05:44.17\00:05:47.87 is born of Him." 00:05:47.90\00:05:49.93 And then in Chapter 3 verse 7 he says, 00:05:49.96\00:05:52.99 "Little children, let no one deceive you. 00:05:53.02\00:05:56.55 He who practices righteousness is righteous, 00:05:56.58\00:06:00.29 just as He is righteous." 00:06:00.32\00:06:03.85 It is the practice of righteousness 00:06:03.88\00:06:06.71 that leads to sanctification, according to Romans 6:19, 00:06:06.74\00:06:11.30 where we are commanded, 00:06:11.33\00:06:12.99 "So now yield your bodily members and faculties 00:06:13.02\00:06:16.73 once for all to be servants of righteousness." 00:06:16.76\00:06:19.82 That's the right way of being and doing. 00:06:19.85\00:06:22.56 God's way which leads 00:06:22.59\00:06:24.51 to sanctification, the scripture says. 00:06:24.54\00:06:27.37 Sanctification is not an instantaneous act. 00:06:27.40\00:06:31.30 It is lived out by faith, day by day, moment by moment. 00:06:31.33\00:06:35.81 As we grow in grace, maturing in purity and holiness. 00:06:35.84\00:06:40.36 In 1 Peter 1:13-19, here's what Peter counsel's us, 00:06:40.39\00:06:47.27 "Therefore, rest your hope fully 00:06:47.30\00:06:50.40 upon the grace that is to be brought to you 00:06:50.43\00:06:52.51 at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 00:06:52.54\00:06:55.07 as obedient children as He who called you is holy, 00:06:55.10\00:07:00.00 you also be holy in all your conduct, 00:07:00.03\00:07:03.46 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy." 00:07:03.49\00:07:07.66 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality 00:07:07.69\00:07:11.18 judges according to each one's work, 00:07:11.21\00:07:14.50 conduct yourselves throughout the time 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.28 of your stay here in fear, 00:07:16.31\00:07:18.94 knowing that you were redeemed 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.28 with the precious blood of Jesus. 00:07:21.31\00:07:26.49 "Be holy, for I am holy." 00:07:26.52\00:07:29.55 God's command is imperative. 00:07:29.58\00:07:31.84 He is holy, completely separated from sin. 00:07:31.87\00:07:35.64 Can it be true that these poor earthen vessels of ours 00:07:35.67\00:07:39.68 can be holy as our heavenly Father is holy? 00:07:39.71\00:07:42.86 Absolutely, through the saving gift of sanctification 00:07:42.89\00:07:48.01 and the enabling power of God's grace. 00:07:48.04\00:07:51.52 God will work out this same separation from sin, 00:07:51.55\00:07:55.11 in His dedicated and obedient children, 00:07:55.14\00:07:58.35 creating in them a personal dimension of His holiness. 00:07:58.38\00:08:03.18 God does not command us to be anything 00:08:03.21\00:08:06.43 that He will not cause us to be. 00:08:06.46\00:08:09.48 Paul, shares the key to unlocking this 00:08:09.51\00:08:11.74 mysterious process in Colossians 1:27, 00:08:11.77\00:08:16.37 where he says, "Christ in you, the hope of glory." 00:08:16.40\00:08:21.37 What is the glory for which we hope? 00:08:21.40\00:08:23.87 In Exodus 33 and 34, the Bible gives an account 00:08:23.90\00:08:28.11 of Moses going back up to Mount Sinai after he'd broken 00:08:28.14\00:08:31.88 the first two tablets of the Ten Commandments. 00:08:31.91\00:08:34.53 And when Moses asked to see God's glory, 00:08:34.56\00:08:37.72 the Lord hid him in the cleft of a rock 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.33 and He passed before Moses 00:08:40.36\00:08:42.38 proclaiming His character traits. 00:08:42.41\00:08:45.15 Moses asked to see God's glory, 00:08:45.18\00:08:47.62 God proclaimed His own character traits. 00:08:47.65\00:08:51.29 Then God recorded again with His own finger, 00:08:51.32\00:08:54.94 the Ten Commandments reflecting His character 00:08:54.97\00:08:58.28 on the second set of stone tablets. 00:08:58.31\00:09:02.48 God's character is His glory. 00:09:02.51\00:09:05.30 And the Ten Commandments are a reflection of His character. 00:09:05.33\00:09:09.93 With Christ abiding in our hearts through faith, 00:09:09.96\00:09:13.45 we have the hope of attaining alike character. 00:09:13.48\00:09:18.29 The Sermon on the Mount was Christ's inaugural address 00:09:18.32\00:09:22.56 as King of the kingdom of divine grace. 00:09:22.59\00:09:25.90 And in this sermon that served as the platform 00:09:25.93\00:09:28.91 to launch His ministry, 00:09:28.94\00:09:30.82 He proclaims His main objective is to restore 00:09:30.85\00:09:34.58 the lost happiness of Eden, to the hearts of men. 00:09:34.61\00:09:39.29 Let's consider a couple of the beatitudes, 00:09:39.32\00:09:42.70 the first one being found in Matthew 5:6, 00:09:42.73\00:09:47.58 He said, "Blessed are those 00:09:47.61\00:09:50.54 who hunger and thirst for righteousness, 00:09:50.57\00:09:53.66 for they shall be filled." 00:09:53.69\00:09:56.83 Hunger and thirst are metaphors 00:09:56.86\00:10:00.09 for a disciple's fervent desire for righteousness. 00:10:00.12\00:10:04.58 Jesus speaks of the hunger and thirst of the soul, 00:10:04.61\00:10:07.97 which was like David's experience, 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.34 recorded in Psalm 42, where he describes 00:10:10.37\00:10:14.04 his thirsty soul panting for God like a deer. 00:10:14.07\00:10:17.88 A thirsty deer pants for water. 00:10:17.91\00:10:20.48 No earthly source can satisfy 00:10:20.51\00:10:23.89 the hunger and thirst of the soul. 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.52 King Solomon tried to fill his emptiness 00:10:26.55\00:10:28.73 with material riches, profound philosophies, 00:10:28.76\00:10:32.74 satisfying his physical appetites, 00:10:32.77\00:10:35.42 and with honor and power. 00:10:35.45\00:10:37.37 And you know what he concluded, that all is vanity. 00:10:37.40\00:10:41.07 None of these things bring the satisfaction 00:10:41.10\00:10:43.87 and happiness that we long for. 00:10:43.90\00:10:46.25 Solomon finally realized. 00:10:46.28\00:10:48.13 It was recognition of our Creator 00:10:48.16\00:10:51.21 and cooperation with Him 00:10:51.24\00:10:53.27 that provided enduring satisfaction. 00:10:53.30\00:10:56.39 We are made righteous with God, through faith in Christ Jesus. 00:10:56.42\00:11:01.35 His imputed righteousness brings justification. 00:11:01.38\00:11:05.06 His imparted righteousness brings sanctification. 00:11:05.09\00:11:08.45 As we grow in grace, walking not according to the flesh, 00:11:08.48\00:11:12.79 but according to the Spirit. 00:11:12.82\00:11:14.94 Only those who long for righteousness 00:11:14.97\00:11:17.59 with the same eagerness, a starving man 00:11:17.62\00:11:21.02 without food or water has- only those will find it. 00:11:21.05\00:11:25.86 The longing of our hearts for righteousness 00:11:25.89\00:11:28.75 is evidence that Christ has already begun His work there. 00:11:28.78\00:11:34.02 This beatitude said, "Blessed are those 00:11:34.05\00:11:37.01 who hunger and thirst for righteousness, 00:11:37.04\00:11:39.68 for they shall be filled." 00:11:39.71\00:11:42.41 The words "shall be filled" are in the passive voice. 00:11:42.44\00:11:46.58 That indicates that righteousness is not 00:11:46.61\00:11:49.53 something that disciples can achieve by their own efforts. 00:11:49.56\00:11:53.49 The verb here is "a divine passive." 00:11:53.52\00:11:56.82 It describes an act of God. 00:11:56.85\00:11:59.39 He alone imparts the righteousness 00:11:59.42\00:12:02.31 for which disciples hunger and thirst. 00:12:02.34\00:12:05.41 This is so crucial to understanding 00:12:05.44\00:12:08.21 the theology on the Sermon on the Mount because in this, 00:12:08.24\00:12:11.99 in Matthew 5:19, Jesus required for His disciples 00:12:12.02\00:12:15.70 to keep the least of the commandments. 00:12:15.73\00:12:18.33 And in Matthew 5:20, He called upon them to 00:12:18.36\00:12:21.31 surpass the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees. 00:12:21.34\00:12:25.10 And in Matthew 5:48 He says, 00:12:25.13\00:12:27.99 "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect." 00:12:28.02\00:12:31.80 You know, such demands can be twisted into a false theology 00:12:31.83\00:12:37.39 where righteousness is achieved by works. 00:12:37.42\00:12:41.70 But the righteousness Jesus demands of us is actually, 00:12:41.73\00:12:46.18 a divine gift given to His followers. 00:12:46.21\00:12:49.83 Now, let's consider another beatitude 00:12:49.86\00:12:52.78 and this one's Matthew 5:8, He says, 00:12:52.81\00:12:56.50 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." 00:12:56.53\00:13:02.53 The words "pure in heart" refer to someone 00:13:02.56\00:13:06.54 who is authentically, righteous in their inner person. 00:13:06.57\00:13:11.79 You know, righteousness can be faked. 00:13:11.82\00:13:14.25 Just consider the Pharisees. 00:13:14.28\00:13:17.00 Jesus said, "True purity is attained 00:13:17.03\00:13:20.87 when God grants it to the person who hungers and thirsts for it." 00:13:20.90\00:13:26.16 The complete fulfillment of this divine promise 00:13:26.19\00:13:29.82 will occur at Jesus' return. 00:13:29.85\00:13:32.17 But the identification of His disciples, 00:13:32.20\00:13:35.38 as those who are pure 00:13:35.41\00:13:37.45 shows that dramatic transformation 00:13:37.48\00:13:40.82 occurs even in this lifetime. 00:13:40.85\00:13:43.45 The word translated "heart" designates the intellect, 00:13:43.48\00:13:47.58 the conscience, the inner man. 00:13:47.61\00:13:49.85 And the pure in heart 00:13:49.88\00:13:51.57 are clothed with the robe of Christ's righteousness. 00:13:51.60\00:13:55.83 Pure hearts have forsaken sin, 00:13:55.86\00:13:58.84 as the ruling principles of their lives. 00:13:58.87\00:14:02.25 Pure hearts consecrate their lives to God without reserve. 00:14:02.28\00:14:07.75 This doesn't mean that they're absolutely sinless. 00:14:07.78\00:14:11.33 It means their motives are right. 00:14:11.36\00:14:13.75 And if their motives are pure, the life will be pure. 00:14:13.78\00:14:17.38 When we are pure in heart, 00:14:17.41\00:14:19.03 we will turn our back on past mistakes, 00:14:19.06\00:14:22.35 and press forward to the mark of perfection in Christ Jesus. 00:14:22.38\00:14:27.70 For the pure in heart, divine grace 00:14:27.73\00:14:29.88 has opened their eyes to seek God 00:14:29.91\00:14:32.46 with spiritual sight through eyes of faith now. 00:14:32.49\00:14:35.85 And later, with physical sight in the glorious kingdom 00:14:35.88\00:14:39.85 when we see Him face to face just as Jesus taught, 00:14:39.88\00:14:44.39 it is essential we recognize our purity in life 00:14:44.42\00:14:47.94 is vitally important to God. 00:14:47.97\00:14:50.64 Are you disinterested in the life of purity? 00:14:50.67\00:14:53.70 I want to encourage you to pray 00:14:53.73\00:14:56.27 for an honest hunger and thirst for righteousness. 00:14:56.30\00:14:59.96 This is an appeal. God is eager to fulfill. 00:14:59.99\00:15:03.67 He can make the person 00:15:03.70\00:15:05.25 who disdains and resists righteousness. 00:15:05.28\00:15:08.91 Love and long for it. 00:15:08.94\00:15:10.95 And as He develops that divine attitude within us, 00:15:10.98\00:15:14.62 the vessel of our heart opens to receive 00:15:14.65\00:15:17.24 Christ's promise to be filled with His righteousness. 00:15:17.27\00:15:22.92 We need to remember who is working the change in us. 00:15:22.95\00:15:27.89 You know, I use this scripture quite often, 00:15:27.92\00:15:30.08 Jeremiah 13:23 says, "Can the Ethiopian 00:15:30.11\00:15:34.57 change his skin or the leopard change his spots." 00:15:34.60\00:15:37.81 And then God says, "If so, then may you also 00:15:37.84\00:15:41.67 who do good, who are accustomed to doing evil." 00:15:41.70\00:15:46.25 What does this scripture tell us? 00:15:46.28\00:15:48.22 We can not change ourselves. 00:15:48.25\00:15:50.54 But don't become discouraged, salvation belongs to our Lord. 00:15:50.57\00:15:55.78 God's part is to do the work of sanctification. 00:15:55.81\00:15:59.67 Our part is to consecrate our lives to Him 00:15:59.70\00:16:03.57 and cooperate by faith. 00:16:03.60\00:16:06.13 You know, Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:10, 00:16:06.16\00:16:09.51 "For we are His workmanship." 00:16:09.54\00:16:13.50 We are created in Christ Jesus for good works, 00:16:13.53\00:16:17.07 which God prepared before hand that we should lock in them. 00:16:17.10\00:16:21.99 By His grace, God will fashion us 00:16:22.02\00:16:25.77 into His genuine work of art, recreating in us a character 00:16:25.80\00:16:30.97 that responds to His love by doing the good works, 00:16:31.00\00:16:35.56 He has planned for us. 00:16:35.59\00:16:37.42 Now let's look at another of my favorite Bible promises. 00:16:37.45\00:16:41.41 I have a lot. But this is Philippians 2:12-13. 00:16:41.44\00:16:45.68 And I'm going to read it to you from the amplified version. 00:16:45.71\00:16:50.25 Philippians 2:12-13 says, 00:16:50.28\00:16:53.06 "Work out cultivate, carry out the goal, 00:16:53.09\00:16:56.55 and fully complete your own salvation with reverence 00:16:56.58\00:17:00.30 and awe and trembling with self-distrust, 00:17:00.33\00:17:03.40 serious caution, tenderness of conscience, 00:17:03.43\00:17:07.17 watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever 00:17:07.20\00:17:11.72 might offend God and discredit the name of Christ." 00:17:11.75\00:17:15.36 Aw, but, 00:17:15.39\00:17:16.86 "Not in your own strength for it is God 00:17:16.89\00:17:21.12 Who is all the while effectually at work in you, 00:17:21.15\00:17:24.78 energizing and creating in you the power and desire, 00:17:24.81\00:17:29.61 both to will and to work for His good pleasure 00:17:29.64\00:17:34.32 and satisfaction and delight." 00:17:34.35\00:17:39.85 You know, the thought of working out my own salvation, 00:17:39.88\00:17:44.57 is what Paul instructs in verse 12. 00:17:44.60\00:17:47.07 At one time, it filled my cringing heart with fear 00:17:47.10\00:17:51.49 not understanding God's plan of sanctification. 00:17:51.52\00:17:54.56 I did not perceive the power of His promise found in verse 13. 00:17:54.59\00:18:00.85 It is God, who effectually works in us to desire His will. 00:18:00.88\00:18:06.67 Through sanctification He changes the desires 00:18:06.70\00:18:10.76 of our heart and aligns our will in perfect order with His. 00:18:10.79\00:18:16.56 Once our minds have been restored to His way of thinking, 00:18:16.59\00:18:21.08 our part is just to step out in the faith of obedience. 00:18:21.11\00:18:26.29 God will not force us to act, but as we take that first step 00:18:26.32\00:18:31.66 to put Christ's righteousness into practice. 00:18:31.69\00:18:35.29 God pours out His promised power and works in us, 00:18:35.32\00:18:40.46 to live in the ways that please Him. 00:18:40.49\00:18:43.48 Hallelujah! 00:18:43.51\00:18:45.01 Now I do need to add this cautionary note. 00:18:45.04\00:18:48.63 If you don't see, your great need for God to work in you, 00:18:48.66\00:18:52.69 both to will and to do for His good pleasure. 00:18:52.72\00:18:56.10 You are deceived and sadly blinded 00:18:56.13\00:18:59.06 to your own sinful condition. 00:18:59.09\00:19:01.65 The more sanctified we become. 00:19:01.68\00:19:04.32 The more sensitive we are to sin. 00:19:04.35\00:19:06.57 Our own moral imperfections are magnified. 00:19:06.60\00:19:09.91 And we become increasingly humbled 00:19:09.94\00:19:12.53 by our need for our Savior, causing us to cling 00:19:12.56\00:19:16.03 all the more closely to Christ for His righteousness. 00:19:16.06\00:19:20.95 Isaiah 32:17 gives us this hope, 00:19:20.98\00:19:26.47 "The work of righteousness will be peace, 00:19:26.50\00:19:29.97 and the effect of righteousness, 00:19:30.00\00:19:32.07 will be quietness and assurance forever." 00:19:32.10\00:19:36.18 A positive transformation of our character 00:19:36.21\00:19:39.78 requires our cooperative effort, 00:19:39.81\00:19:42.91 but it is a spirit empowered effort. 00:19:42.94\00:19:47.41 With personal trust in God and confident reliance on His power, 00:19:47.44\00:19:52.73 we can do a work of righteousness 00:19:52.76\00:19:55.43 that keeps us abiding in Christ. 00:19:55.46\00:19:57.97 Sanctification and assurance of salvation will be ours. 00:19:58.00\00:20:02.07 We must like the Apostle Paul, 00:20:02.10\00:20:04.10 cherish the privilege of pursuit. 00:20:04.13\00:20:07.59 I'll explain that just a moment. 00:20:07.62\00:20:09.26 But for now, we know that Christ abides in our hearts 00:20:09.29\00:20:13.67 through faith, and the Holy Spirit indwells us, 00:20:13.70\00:20:17.20 and carries on to perfection, 00:20:17.23\00:20:19.39 the renewing work of God that began at regeneration. 00:20:19.42\00:20:23.58 God takes the initial acts of granting righteousness to us. 00:20:23.61\00:20:29.22 Then it's our turn to act. 00:20:29.25\00:20:31.58 We must work out that sanctifying grace 00:20:31.61\00:20:35.43 that He puts in our heart, 00:20:35.46\00:20:37.00 not depending on our own ability, 00:20:37.03\00:20:40.12 but on His power, poured out from on high by the Holy Spirit. 00:20:40.15\00:20:45.18 Paul instructed Timothy, his young co-laborer, 00:20:45.21\00:20:49.16 in 1 Timothy 6:11-12, he says 00:20:49.19\00:20:53.79 "Pursue righteousness, godliness, 00:20:53.82\00:20:56.86 faith, love, patience, gentleness. 00:20:56.89\00:21:00.26 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, 00:21:00.29\00:21:04.80 to which you were also called." 00:21:04.83\00:21:07.58 What? Fight the good fight of faith, 00:21:07.61\00:21:10.41 grip eternal life tightly and don't let go? 00:21:10.44\00:21:13.91 Was not the evangelist Timothy saved by grace? 00:21:13.94\00:21:17.66 Is Paul saying, there is a constant 00:21:17.69\00:21:20.38 spiritual battle occurring in our earthly existence 00:21:20.41\00:21:24.25 that could cause us to release our grip on eternal life? 00:21:24.28\00:21:28.62 Yes. We must have an active faith 00:21:28.65\00:21:32.58 that works to overcome the old nature. 00:21:32.61\00:21:36.11 Paul, the great messenger of grace 00:21:36.14\00:21:39.46 says in Romans 6:4 that he calls to all who are in Christ, 00:21:39.49\00:21:44.39 "to walk in newness of life." 00:21:44.42\00:21:47.14 And he instructs us in Romans 6:16, 00:21:47.17\00:21:51.32 he says, "Do you not know 00:21:51.35\00:21:53.67 that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, 00:21:53.70\00:21:58.25 you are that one's slaves whom you obey, 00:21:58.28\00:22:01.81 whether of sin leading to death, 00:22:01.84\00:22:04.80 or of obedience leading to righteousness?" 00:22:04.83\00:22:10.28 Obedience that leads to righteousness, 00:22:10.31\00:22:13.10 does that do away with righteousness by faith 00:22:13.13\00:22:16.58 and the grace of God? Absolutely not. 00:22:16.61\00:22:19.87 For as we reviewed today 00:22:19.90\00:22:21.77 it is God, who is working in us, 00:22:21.80\00:22:23.82 to will and to do His good pleasure, 00:22:23.85\00:22:26.43 even obedience is by grace. 00:22:26.46\00:22:30.43 After counseling us to work obedience 00:22:30.46\00:22:33.33 that leads to righteousness, he says in Romans 6:18 that, 00:22:33.36\00:22:38.46 "We present ourselves as slaves of righteousness for holiness." 00:22:38.49\00:22:44.10 And finally, he concludes 00:22:44.13\00:22:46.24 with the reason for these actions in Romans 6:22 00:22:46.27\00:22:52.01 saying, that is "so we may enjoy our fruit to holiness 00:22:52.04\00:22:57.66 and the end thereof, everlasting life." 00:22:57.69\00:23:01.80 Christ called Paul to testify, to the gospel of grace. 00:23:01.83\00:23:07.66 And he gratefully fulfilled his calling. 00:23:07.69\00:23:10.71 Paul's most powerful defense of grace 00:23:10.74\00:23:13.91 is found in his letter to the church at Rome. 00:23:13.94\00:23:17.15 In chapters 3 through 5, 00:23:17.18\00:23:19.92 he presents justification by grace. 00:23:19.95\00:23:23.36 Then from Romans 6:1 through 7:6, 00:23:23.39\00:23:30.30 Paul persuasively argues 00:23:30.33\00:23:32.86 the Christian's duty to be sanctified. 00:23:32.89\00:23:35.88 And as he continues from Romans 7:7 through 8:11, 00:23:35.91\00:23:43.05 he points out it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit 00:23:43.08\00:23:47.69 that a regenerated person can be sanctified. 00:23:47.72\00:23:51.37 And from Romans 8:12-30, Paul pours out 00:23:51.40\00:23:55.70 glorious proof of this certain completion of God's 00:23:55.73\00:23:59.23 sanctifying work in all who depend on Him, 00:23:59.26\00:24:03.12 right up to the crowning moment 00:24:03.15\00:24:05.35 of the final glorification of the saints. 00:24:05.38\00:24:09.05 The Apostle Paul was God's most passionate defender of grace, 00:24:09.08\00:24:14.28 wanting the body of Christ to stand perfect 00:24:14.31\00:24:17.27 and complete in all the will of God. 00:24:17.30\00:24:20.69 Seeing it as a privilege, to pursue the God of grace, 00:24:20.72\00:24:25.53 this is what he wrote in 2 Corinthians 7:1, 00:24:25.56\00:24:30.85 "Therefore, having these promises, beloved, 00:24:30.88\00:24:34.77 let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh 00:24:34.80\00:24:38.73 and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." 00:24:38.76\00:24:44.80 God's most enthusiastic evangelist for grace 00:24:44.83\00:24:49.14 would certainly be confused, by some of 00:24:49.17\00:24:52.05 todays watered down teachings on the topic. 00:24:52.08\00:24:55.01 Can you imagine what his response would be, 00:24:55.04\00:24:58.11 to those who twist his words, 00:24:58.14\00:25:00.75 misleading so many souls to shrug off the blessings, 00:25:00.78\00:25:05.02 and eternal benefits of sanctification by grace? 00:25:05.05\00:25:10.12 Paul fought the good fight 00:25:10.15\00:25:12.12 declaring in 1 Corinthians 9:26-27, 00:25:12.15\00:25:16.14 "I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, 00:25:16.17\00:25:19.66 lest when I have preached to others 00:25:19.69\00:25:22.02 I myself should become disqualified." 00:25:22.05\00:25:24.87 And by the grace of God, he steadily 00:25:24.90\00:25:27.74 progressed in the ongoing process of salvation. 00:25:27.77\00:25:31.47 He taught others to strive, to perfect holiness, 00:25:31.50\00:25:35.39 knowing absolute perfection of character will only be ours, 00:25:35.42\00:25:39.43 at the time of our glorification, 00:25:39.46\00:25:41.50 when we put on immortality and Jesus returns. 00:25:41.53\00:25:45.56 In Philippians 3:12-14, he says, 00:25:45.59\00:25:49.10 "Not that I have already attained, 00:25:49.13\00:25:52.23 or am already perfected, but I press on, 00:25:52.26\00:25:56.96 that I may lay hold of that for which 00:25:56.99\00:26:00.90 Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 00:26:00.93\00:26:05.29 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended, 00:26:05.32\00:26:09.21 but one thing I do, forgetting those things 00:26:09.24\00:26:12.81 which are behind and reaching forward to those things 00:26:12.84\00:26:16.32 which are ahead, I press toward the goal 00:26:16.35\00:26:19.66 for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." 00:26:19.69\00:26:26.72 Paul was motivated by God's grace 00:26:26.75\00:26:29.73 and encouraged by his own personal faith efforts. 00:26:29.76\00:26:33.34 He ran the race with endurance, looking unto Jesus, 00:26:33.37\00:26:37.49 the author and finisher of his faith. 00:26:37.52\00:26:40.28 And with complete assurance of salvation, 00:26:40.31\00:26:43.48 Paul confidently relied on God, 00:26:43.51\00:26:47.22 to complete the good work He had begun, 00:26:47.25\00:26:50.45 in this humble preacher of grace. 00:26:50.48\00:26:53.07 I want to take just a second to explain that. 00:26:53.10\00:26:55.99 In Philippians 2:12 when he says, 00:26:56.02\00:26:58.72 "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" 00:26:58.75\00:27:02.46 and then he says, "Not in your own strength 00:27:02.49\00:27:04.55 for it's God who works in you to will and to do." 00:27:04.58\00:27:07.87 What is he saying? First, as God's Spirit is in you, 00:27:07.90\00:27:12.33 He will line your desires up with God's desires, 00:27:12.36\00:27:16.08 as you read the word. 00:27:16.11\00:27:17.55 And He changes your heart. 00:27:17.58\00:27:19.27 But He's not going to force you to act. 00:27:19.30\00:27:21.94 You have to step out in faith. 00:27:21.97\00:27:25.74 And when you do the power of the Holy Spirit shows up 00:27:25.77\00:27:29.59 and God works in you to act. 00:27:29.62\00:27:31.77 Paul grasped God's supreme purposes 00:27:31.80\00:27:35.57 and he had a true understanding of salvation by grace. 00:27:35.60\00:27:40.90 Paul understood the privilege of pursuit. 00:27:40.93\00:27:44.23 He pressed forward with persistence, 00:27:44.26\00:27:48.28 practicing righteousness 00:27:48.31\00:27:50.33 and growing in the grace of sanctification. 00:27:50.36\00:27:53.24 We hope you can join us on our next program, 00:27:53.27\00:27:55.58 where we will consider the awesome work 00:27:55.61\00:27:58.62 of the refiner's fire, bye-bye. 00:27:58.65\00:28:02.04
