Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 Can you identify God's three greatest gifts to humanity? 00:00:02.80\00:00:06.60 If we recognize His three greatest gifts of grace, 00:00:06.63\00:00:10.64 we will recognize the effects of God's grace. 00:00:10.67\00:00:13.84 Please join us now as we look 00:00:13.87\00:00:15.93 into the good news from the word of God. 00:00:15.96\00:00:18.55 Welcome to "The Grace Pipeline." 00:00:39.08\00:00:41.32 This series is a Bible study if you will. 00:00:41.35\00:00:45.14 It's a journey through scripture 00:00:45.17\00:00:47.00 and it follows the Bible study that I was privileged 00:00:47.03\00:00:50.23 to write on the topic of grace by the same title. 00:00:50.26\00:00:53.78 On our last program, we considered 00:00:53.81\00:00:55.73 how the love of God is the compelling force 00:00:55.76\00:00:58.82 behind the grace of God. 00:00:58.85\00:01:00.74 Today we will identify God's three greatest gifts. 00:01:00.77\00:01:04.87 And that will help us to define grace. 00:01:04.90\00:01:07.38 If you are following along in the companion book, 00:01:07.41\00:01:10.82 we are beginning in chapter 1 page 15. 00:01:10.85\00:01:13.77 Now on the last program I shared an illustration 00:01:13.80\00:01:16.77 the Lord gave to me that helps us understand 00:01:16.80\00:01:19.60 his super system of grace as explained in scripture. 00:01:19.63\00:01:22.97 I want to do a quick review with you. 00:01:23.00\00:01:25.26 God's heart wells with love for us. 00:01:25.29\00:01:28.47 And from that well of love flow all of God's blessings. 00:01:28.50\00:01:32.14 Grace is the pipeline through which all of these 00:01:32.17\00:01:35.52 blessings come from heaven to earth. 00:01:35.55\00:01:38.32 Faith is the faucet. 00:01:38.35\00:01:39.88 It's how we tap into God's grace pipeline. 00:01:39.91\00:01:42.76 And our faith regulates the release of blessings 00:01:42.79\00:01:45.41 from His great reservoir. 00:01:45.44\00:01:47.08 Prayer is the handle that opens the faith faucet, 00:01:47.11\00:01:50.85 trust is the foundation for the prayer of faith, 00:01:50.88\00:01:53.74 and relationship is the foundation for trust. 00:01:53.77\00:01:57.14 So love is the foundation for any relationship. 00:01:57.17\00:02:01.72 The greater our understanding of God's love for us, 00:02:01.75\00:02:05.24 the greater our love will be for Him. 00:02:05.27\00:02:07.94 In 1 John 4:19 the Apostle says 00:02:07.97\00:02:10.76 "We love him because He first loved us." 00:02:10.79\00:02:14.45 Greater love creates a more intimate relationship with Him 00:02:14.48\00:02:18.81 which creates more trust. 00:02:18.84\00:02:20.86 And that trust helps us to increase 00:02:20.89\00:02:24.85 our persistence in praying. 00:02:24.88\00:02:27.25 Prayer develops actions of faith. 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.67 And faith is how we tap into God's grace pipeline 00:02:29.70\00:02:32.80 and receive His wonderful blessings. 00:02:32.83\00:02:35.37 So what is grace? How do we define it? 00:02:35.40\00:02:39.60 If you've been a Christian for any length of time 00:02:39.63\00:02:42.39 I can almost hear you muttering God's unmerited favor. 00:02:42.42\00:02:46.53 Yes, yes, that's it, isn't it? 00:02:46.56\00:02:48.72 For all the years that I have shared this teaching, 00:02:48.75\00:02:51.75 that is the standard responses that audiences give 00:02:51.78\00:02:55.43 when I pose this question. 00:02:55.46\00:02:57.60 However I find fault with this definition. 00:02:57.63\00:03:00.91 It is not that it is untrue. 00:03:00.94\00:03:03.14 It is just far too narrow to express 00:03:03.17\00:03:06.80 the spectacular scope of grace. 00:03:06.83\00:03:10.13 And when I urge people to elaborate 00:03:10.16\00:03:12.35 on the definition of grace 00:03:12.38\00:03:14.24 they will often offer the explanation, 00:03:14.27\00:03:17.47 meaning God's graciousness to us 00:03:17.50\00:03:20.41 manifested in His undeserved mercy that saves sinners. 00:03:20.44\00:03:24.41 No, no, no. God's graciousness is an attribute. 00:03:24.44\00:03:28.97 It is an--His attitude and attribute of His character. 00:03:29.00\00:03:33.48 But grace is an act of the divine donor. 00:03:33.51\00:03:37.28 He expresses his dynamic forces of His grace 00:03:37.31\00:03:41.33 through specific acts and gifts. 00:03:41.36\00:03:44.11 Let me illustrate this important distinction. 00:03:44.14\00:03:47.20 Our gracious God is merciful. 00:03:47.23\00:03:50.12 That's His attitude, His attribute. 00:03:50.15\00:03:52.92 But by grace he extends pardon, a specific act or gift. 00:03:52.95\00:03:59.90 Before we unpack the customary definition 00:03:59.93\00:04:03.41 of God's unmerited favor, 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.82 let's examine something of interest 00:04:05.85\00:04:09.46 from the original Greek language. 00:04:09.49\00:04:11.75 What I'd like to do is just briefly consider 00:04:11.78\00:04:15.04 four related Greek words. 00:04:15.07\00:04:17.41 And those words are chairo, charis, charisma, and charakter. 00:04:17.44\00:04:24.32 So what is chairo? 00:04:24.35\00:04:26.71 Chairo is the root word for grace. 00:04:26.74\00:04:30.13 And it means to rejoice. 00:04:30.16\00:04:32.86 Charis, that is actually the word for grace. 00:04:32.89\00:04:36.29 And it represents multiple but related concepts. 00:04:36.32\00:04:39.88 It's used in numerous senses in scripture. 00:04:39.91\00:04:43.27 It can mean gracefulness, loveliness, agreeableness, 00:04:43.30\00:04:47.06 acceptableness, gratitude or thankfulness. 00:04:47.09\00:04:50.19 But by far, the most prominent meaning is the act of favor, 00:04:50.22\00:04:56.03 the goodwill gift, freely bestowed by God. 00:04:56.06\00:04:59.33 And when it comes to charis, the word "grace," 00:04:59.36\00:05:02.15 I like what Strong's Concordance offers. 00:05:02.18\00:05:04.85 It's a most notable definition of grace. 00:05:04.88\00:05:08.14 Here is what Strong's Concordance says. 00:05:08.17\00:05:10.54 That grace is "the divine influence upon the heart 00:05:10.57\00:05:15.25 and its reflection in the life." 00:05:15.28\00:05:18.14 So now let's consider "charisma." 00:05:18.17\00:05:21.08 That is a divine gift of grace. 00:05:21.11\00:05:23.45 And charismata is the plural form of this noun. 00:05:23.48\00:05:26.80 And then there is "charakter." 00:05:26.83\00:05:28.98 This is a related word that has to do 00:05:29.01\00:05:31.58 with a genuine engraved work of art 00:05:31.61\00:05:34.31 in which the features of the created image 00:05:34.34\00:05:37.39 perfectly match the instrument or the person producing it. 00:05:37.42\00:05:42.10 This word stresses complete similarity, an exact image of, 00:05:42.13\00:05:47.91 or the express representation of something or someone. 00:05:47.94\00:05:52.90 We derive the English word character from this definition. 00:05:52.93\00:05:57.48 And that's to define the moral nature of a person. 00:05:57.51\00:06:00.96 So these four related Greek words paint-- 00:06:00.99\00:06:06.29 they come from the New Testament. 00:06:06.32\00:06:07.94 They're grouped together. 00:06:07.97\00:06:09.40 They paint an incredible word picture. 00:06:09.43\00:06:13.08 Did you perceive it? 00:06:13.11\00:06:15.13 God pours out His charis, His grace from on high 00:06:15.16\00:06:19.83 through his heavenly pipeline to offer us charismata, 00:06:19.86\00:06:23.73 His gifts of grace, with divine power 00:06:23.76\00:06:27.26 that will recreate within us a charakter or character 00:06:27.29\00:06:32.03 that is in harmony with His divine nature. 00:06:32.06\00:06:35.13 That's why the root word of grace is chairo, to rejoice. 00:06:35.16\00:06:40.35 You know we can rejoice. 00:06:40.38\00:06:42.56 Grace results in our rescue and renewal. 00:06:42.59\00:06:46.04 God desires to fashion us into His genuine work of art, 00:06:46.07\00:06:51.18 recreating in us His very image. 00:06:51.21\00:06:54.65 Our transformation is a work of God within us 00:06:54.68\00:06:58.45 accomplished by His grace. 00:06:58.48\00:07:01.12 That's what the Apostle Paul explained in Ephesians 2:10. 00:07:01.15\00:07:06.96 And this is what it says, 00:07:06.99\00:07:09.49 "For we are God's own handiwork His workmanship, 00:07:09.52\00:07:14.20 recreated in Christ Jesus born anew 00:07:14.23\00:07:17.81 that we may do those good works 00:07:17.84\00:07:20.78 which God predestined planned beforehand for us 00:07:20.81\00:07:25.58 taking paths which He prepared ahead of time, 00:07:25.61\00:07:29.23 that we should walk in them living the good life 00:07:29.26\00:07:33.26 which He prearranged and made ready for us to live." 00:07:33.29\00:07:38.21 Now let's revisit the standard definition of grace 00:07:38.24\00:07:41.58 and see what we can uncover. 00:07:41.61\00:07:43.88 Unmerited favor. What does it mean? 00:07:43.91\00:07:47.38 Well, unmerited means that we don't deserve it. 00:07:47.41\00:07:51.03 Not by self worth. There's nothing we can do to earn it. 00:07:51.06\00:07:54.57 And favor represents a divine gift 00:07:54.60\00:07:58.19 that bestows blessing and benefit. 00:07:58.22\00:08:01.02 So even within conventional confines 00:08:01.05\00:08:03.87 we see that grace is a spontaneous action 00:08:03.90\00:08:07.94 of love from God as he bestows His free gifts 00:08:07.97\00:08:12.23 on undeserving people like me and like you 00:08:12.26\00:08:16.60 who will accept His generosity by faith. 00:08:16.63\00:08:20.73 What is the single most exceptional revelation, 00:08:20.76\00:08:25.62 the greatest gift of God's love to the rebellious human race? 00:08:25.65\00:08:31.02 More accurately I should say, who is. 00:08:31.05\00:08:34.67 John 3:16 declares, "For God so loved the world, 00:08:34.70\00:08:39.41 He gave His only begotten Son 00:08:39.44\00:08:42.14 that whosoever believes in Him should not perish. 00:08:42.17\00:08:46.15 But have everlasting life." 00:08:46.18\00:08:48.56 And Paul takes note of God's overwhelming generosity, 00:08:48.59\00:08:53.19 saying in Romans 8:32, "He who did not spare His own Son 00:08:53.22\00:08:58.61 but delivered Him up for all, 00:08:58.64\00:09:01.74 how shall He not with Him also give us all good things." 00:09:01.77\00:09:08.01 Nothing else can compare 00:09:08.04\00:09:11.07 to the gift of God's grace found in our Savior. 00:09:11.10\00:09:14.94 And Romans 5:2 informs us that it is through Christ Jesus 00:09:14.97\00:09:20.05 that we have access by faith into this grace 00:09:20.08\00:09:23.75 in which we stand and can rejoice of the glory of God. 00:09:23.78\00:09:28.66 This hope-- hallelujah-- 00:09:28.69\00:09:31.69 God manifests His matchless grace to us 00:09:31.72\00:09:36.87 through three specific and undeserved gifts. 00:09:36.90\00:09:41.16 Number one of the three greatest gifts of grace 00:09:41.19\00:09:44.82 is Jesus Christ and His merits. 00:09:44.85\00:09:48.04 Number 2 is the Holy Spirit and His influencing assistance. 00:09:48.07\00:09:53.76 And number 3 is the Holy Scriptures 00:09:53.79\00:09:56.78 that yield knowledge of our Lord and the power of His promise. 00:09:56.81\00:10:03.13 As we examine these three greatest gifts of grace 00:10:03.16\00:10:07.47 in upcoming programs, we will begin to understand 00:10:07.50\00:10:11.39 that grace is God's divine power of salvation 00:10:11.42\00:10:15.87 to rescue us from sin and death, 00:10:15.90\00:10:18.82 to renew a right spirit within us, 00:10:18.85\00:10:21.42 and restore us to more purity. 00:10:21.45\00:10:24.11 God desires that we come to Him as little children, 00:10:24.14\00:10:28.54 learning to be absolutely depended upon Him. 00:10:28.57\00:10:33.50 All things come to us through His liberal acts of love. 00:10:33.53\00:10:38.41 God calls. He saves, He justifies, He sanctifies, 00:10:38.44\00:10:42.12 and He establishes us by grace. 00:10:42.15\00:10:45.65 Further we learn, repent, love, pray, 00:10:45.68\00:10:48.89 and even obey by grace. 00:10:48.92\00:10:52.74 We could list the affects of grace endlessly 00:10:52.77\00:10:55.79 but I think the point is becoming clear. 00:10:55.82\00:10:58.70 Grace is dynamic. And it is all sufficient. 00:10:58.73\00:11:02.16 That's why Jesus could say to Paul 00:11:02.19\00:11:05.14 that His grace is sufficient, 00:11:05.17\00:11:07.35 for His power is made perfect in weakness. 00:11:07.38\00:11:10.67 And it is through grace that we reign in life victoriously. 00:11:10.70\00:11:15.99 Look at this wonderful scripture promise 00:11:16.02\00:11:18.14 found in Romans 5:17. 00:11:18.17\00:11:20.69 It says "For if by the one man's offense," speaking of Adam. 00:11:20.72\00:11:26.55 "If by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, 00:11:26.58\00:11:30.39 much more those who receive abundance of grace 00:11:30.42\00:11:35.18 and of the gift of righteousness 00:11:35.21\00:11:37.39 will reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ." 00:11:37.42\00:11:41.87 On our last program and so far in today's, 00:11:41.90\00:11:45.84 we have considered God's system of grace. 00:11:45.87\00:11:49.21 We've given you the long answer 00:11:49.24\00:11:50.61 to the question, "What is grace?" 00:11:50.64\00:11:52.70 So now let's condense this explanation 00:11:52.73\00:11:55.79 to a succinct definition. 00:11:55.82\00:11:58.03 One that you can easily remember. 00:11:58.06\00:12:01.40 "Divine grace is the unearned, 00:12:01.43\00:12:04.78 undeserved gifts bestowed by a God of infinite love 00:12:04.81\00:12:09.84 which provide His divine assistance 00:12:09.87\00:12:12.96 and supernatural power unto salvation." 00:12:12.99\00:12:17.48 Every good and perfect gift comes from above. 00:12:17.51\00:12:21.92 And it comes down from our perfect heavenly Father 00:12:21.95\00:12:24.62 through His grace pipeline. 00:12:24.65\00:12:26.97 God is the source of life. 00:12:27.00\00:12:29.60 So His grace is our source for spiritual life. 00:12:29.63\00:12:33.86 Grace imparts the life source of our Savior 00:12:33.89\00:12:37.49 who is willing to become a ransom and substitute. 00:12:37.52\00:12:41.59 Grace grants the life source of the Holy Spirit 00:12:41.62\00:12:44.73 who works in us to willing to do God's pleasure. 00:12:44.76\00:12:48.57 And grace supplies the life source of the word of God 00:12:48.60\00:12:53.51 which implanted in our hearts is able to save our souls 00:12:53.54\00:12:58.07 and make us partakers of His divine nature. 00:12:58.10\00:13:01.83 We truly have reason to rejoice. 00:13:01.86\00:13:05.22 Grace is the remedy for all that ails humanity. 00:13:05.25\00:13:09.58 And it is ours for the asking. 00:13:09.61\00:13:12.74 Allow me to share two wonderful Bible's accounts 00:13:12.77\00:13:16.70 that will help illustrate this. 00:13:16.73\00:13:19.38 The first is one of my favorites found in John 4:1-42. 00:13:19.41\00:13:25.23 And to conserve time I'm going to paraphrase for you. 00:13:25.26\00:13:29.36 If you're following along in the companion book, 00:13:29.39\00:13:31.39 we're beginning in the chapter 2. 00:13:31.42\00:13:35.39 What this story talks about, scripture tells us 00:13:35.42\00:13:37.86 that heading North from Judea to return to Galilee, 00:13:37.89\00:13:42.61 Jesus walked the direct route through Samaria. 00:13:42.64\00:13:45.66 And just outside the village of Sychar he became wearied 00:13:45.69\00:13:49.46 and stopped at Jacob's well 00:13:49.49\00:13:51.37 sending His disciples ahead to buy food. 00:13:51.40\00:13:54.80 So without a water pot and a rope to retrieve 00:13:54.83\00:13:57.88 the much needed refreshment from the deep well, 00:13:57.91\00:14:00.75 He rested nearby. It was noon. 00:14:00.78\00:14:03.77 A local Samarian woman approached, 00:14:03.80\00:14:06.03 surprised to see another person there 00:14:06.06\00:14:08.68 because the usual hours for villagers to draw 00:14:08.71\00:14:11.45 from the public well were in the morning or the evening. 00:14:11.48\00:14:14.89 She, however, came at midday. 00:14:14.92\00:14:18.00 Perhaps, purposely to avoid the critical glances 00:14:18.03\00:14:21.51 and the wagging tongues of those 00:14:21.54\00:14:23.17 who knew she lived in open sin. 00:14:23.20\00:14:26.00 Her intriguing history included married 00:14:26.03\00:14:28.11 just to five different men. 00:14:28.14\00:14:30.12 And her sixth, with whom she lived at that time, 00:14:30.15\00:14:33.36 was not her husband. 00:14:33.39\00:14:35.47 Little did she expect the life altering encounter 00:14:35.50\00:14:39.30 she was about to have with the seventh man, 00:14:39.33\00:14:42.84 Jesus, "the man of perfection." 00:14:42.87\00:14:45.71 Asking for a drink of water, 00:14:45.74\00:14:47.20 Christ startled her by His request. 00:14:47.23\00:14:50.41 This stranger was a Jew. 00:14:50.44\00:14:52.09 That much she recognized. 00:14:52.12\00:14:54.04 And the adversarial relationship between His people 00:14:54.07\00:14:57.55 and hers was one of mutual racial contempt. 00:14:57.58\00:15:02.40 Jews considered Samaritans half-breed mongrels 00:15:02.43\00:15:06.34 who practice a combination of heathenism 00:15:06.37\00:15:09.08 and the apostate Hebrew religion. 00:15:09.11\00:15:11.62 And Samaritans held bitter hostility against those 00:15:11.65\00:15:15.06 who pass through their land on the way to Jerusalem. 00:15:15.09\00:15:18.30 Moreover, it was not customary for Jewish men 00:15:18.33\00:15:21.16 to speak publicly with a woman. 00:15:21.19\00:15:23.66 So she asked Jesus-- she said, 00:15:23.69\00:15:26.78 "How is it that you being a Jew 00:15:26.81\00:15:29.91 can ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" 00:15:29.94\00:15:33.37 You know, the Samaritans knew of the expected Messiah, 00:15:33.40\00:15:36.34 the Savior of the world. 00:15:36.37\00:15:38.17 But this woman wasn't looking for the coming Christ that day. 00:15:38.20\00:15:42.44 She had not come to the well seeking grace. 00:15:42.47\00:15:45.71 Nonetheless, she came face to face 00:15:45.74\00:15:48.75 with the Master of grace who sought her. 00:15:48.78\00:15:52.60 I'm moved by what Jesus said next. 00:15:52.63\00:15:57.13 He didn't respond with a sermon 00:15:57.16\00:15:59.40 to explain their culture and doctrinal differences. 00:15:59.43\00:16:03.14 He didn't launch into scriptural apologetics 00:16:03.17\00:16:06.84 or chastise her for her sin. 00:16:06.87\00:16:09.33 He tenderly aroused her desire for grace 00:16:09.36\00:16:13.49 and stimulated a deep spiritual thirst within her soul. 00:16:13.52\00:16:18.66 Jesus answered and said to her, 00:16:18.69\00:16:22.12 "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that says to you, 00:16:22.15\00:16:28.80 'give me a drink' you would have asked him 00:16:28.83\00:16:32.81 and He would have given you living water. 00:16:32.84\00:16:36.61 Whoever drinks of the water 00:16:36.64\00:16:38.70 that I shall give him will never thirst, 00:16:38.73\00:16:42.34 but the water that I shall give him 00:16:42.37\00:16:45.07 will become in him a fountain of water 00:16:45.10\00:16:48.96 springing up to everlasting life." 00:16:48.99\00:16:53.20 Oh, if only you knew. 00:16:53.23\00:16:55.55 If only you knew, he announced 00:16:55.58\00:16:57.54 that I am the gift of God 00:16:57.57\00:17:00.28 or as Revelation 13:8 describes Him, 00:17:00.31\00:17:02.95 "The lamb that was slain 00:17:02.98\00:17:04.45 from the foundation of the earth. 00:17:04.48\00:17:06.64 And as John, the Baptist described Him in John 1:29, 00:17:06.67\00:17:11.19 "The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." 00:17:11.22\00:17:16.79 Oh, dear woman, if only you knew 00:17:16.82\00:17:20.09 that I am the gift of God to you 00:17:20.12\00:17:22.34 and I can give you living water 00:17:22.37\00:17:24.85 that springs into everlasting life. 00:17:24.88\00:17:28.26 I vividly imagine Christ, spreading his arms widely 00:17:28.29\00:17:32.90 as he presented these words of grace 00:17:32.93\00:17:35.17 in a gesture of the posture He would assume on the cross 00:17:35.20\00:17:39.29 and equally a sign of a welcoming embrace. 00:17:39.32\00:17:42.95 Separated from God by her sin, 00:17:42.98\00:17:45.68 the woman's parched and withered heart desired more. 00:17:45.71\00:17:51.20 You know, that was a natural longing 00:17:51.23\00:17:53.28 because when God created humanity, 00:17:53.31\00:17:55.83 He implanted eternity in our hearts, 00:17:55.86\00:17:59.08 a divine sense of the purpose of life 00:17:59.11\00:18:02.19 that He alone can satisfy. 00:18:02.22\00:18:04.87 After further time and conversation with Him 00:18:04.90\00:18:07.47 the woman finally drew from the well 00:18:07.50\00:18:09.64 but not from the well of Jacob. 00:18:09.67\00:18:12.14 For she dropped her water pot 00:18:12.17\00:18:13.85 and she ran to the city 00:18:13.88\00:18:15.55 to share the testimony of her experience. 00:18:15.58\00:18:18.94 Many returned with her to meet Jesus, 00:18:18.97\00:18:22.33 joining in the journey of grace 00:18:22.36\00:18:24.51 and believed because of His word. 00:18:24.54\00:18:27.10 With joy that day there was thirsting souls 00:18:27.13\00:18:30.68 who believed true living water from the well of salvation. 00:18:30.71\00:18:36.91 This summary of the gospel of grace 00:18:36.94\00:18:39.70 is found in Ephesians 2:8, where Paul writes 00:18:39.73\00:18:43.75 "For by grace you have been saved 00:18:43.78\00:18:46.50 through faith and that not of your selves. 00:18:46.53\00:18:49.62 It is the gift of God." 00:18:49.65\00:18:52.97 Salvation is God's free gift, 00:18:53.00\00:18:56.06 born of His commitment of love for all of humanity 00:18:56.09\00:18:59.92 and His covenant of grace. 00:18:59.95\00:19:02.37 Now strangely the concept of His great hearted gift 00:19:02.40\00:19:06.89 is difficult for many to comprehend. 00:19:06.92\00:19:11.48 Because they feel unworthy of salvation, 00:19:11.51\00:19:15.03 some people avoid God all together 00:19:15.06\00:19:17.72 and others sit in church with a furrowed brow 00:19:17.75\00:19:20.72 and a frown having no assurance of salvation, 00:19:20.75\00:19:23.80 languishing in their labors, 00:19:23.83\00:19:25.81 wearied from their self effort to measure up to His standards. 00:19:25.84\00:19:30.53 In startling contrast to these are those 00:19:30.56\00:19:33.61 who claim God's grace, but live like the devil 00:19:33.64\00:19:37.25 and cry foul at any mention of obedience. 00:19:37.28\00:19:40.28 Now naturally there are categories 00:19:40.31\00:19:42.61 of better informed Christians 00:19:42.64\00:19:44.48 that exist between these extremes. 00:19:44.51\00:19:47.65 But the point is, often people 00:19:47.68\00:19:50.40 miss the joy of relationship with God 00:19:50.43\00:19:53.37 because they do not understand His grace. 00:19:53.40\00:19:58.06 In Acts 16, we find the conversion story 00:19:58.09\00:20:02.07 of a Philippian jailer and in verse 30 he asks, 00:20:02.10\00:20:06.20 "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 00:20:06.23\00:20:09.54 This question that was posed to Paul and Silas 00:20:09.57\00:20:13.36 by this trembling Philippian jailer 00:20:13.39\00:20:16.30 echoes within all hearts that are awakened 00:20:16.33\00:20:19.64 to the sense of their spiritual need. 00:20:19.67\00:20:22.57 Respondents to Peter's sermon asked at Pentecost 00:20:22.60\00:20:26.99 that an astonished Paul uttered similar words 00:20:27.02\00:20:30.76 on the road to Damascus when he saw the light. 00:20:30.79\00:20:35.06 The jailer's cry for salvation was legitimately born of fear. 00:20:35.09\00:20:40.47 He had been assigned to guard Silas 00:20:40.50\00:20:43.61 and the Apostle Paul who were accused 00:20:43.64\00:20:46.39 of being servants of the most high God 00:20:46.42\00:20:48.84 and whose backs had been plowed 00:20:48.87\00:20:51.29 by the rod of injustice. 00:20:51.32\00:20:53.47 The heathen jailer had listened with callous indifference 00:20:53.50\00:20:58.26 to their prayers and songs of praise 00:20:58.29\00:21:00.64 coming from their inner cell 00:21:00.67\00:21:02.69 and awakened at midnight by a mighty earthquake. 00:21:02.72\00:21:05.84 He witnessed the divine deliverance of an Almighty God 00:21:05.87\00:21:09.49 who broke their chains and shackles, 00:21:09.52\00:21:11.64 who loosed the bars of the prison doors 00:21:11.67\00:21:14.64 and opened their way of release. 00:21:14.67\00:21:17.42 You know by Roman law, 00:21:17.45\00:21:19.37 the jailer would have to answer with his own life 00:21:19.40\00:21:22.59 for the loss of those prisoners 00:21:22.62\00:21:24.33 whom he assumed had fled. 00:21:24.36\00:21:26.72 And so as he drew his sword to kill himself, 00:21:26.75\00:21:30.41 the men of God intervened to stop his act of his suicide. 00:21:30.44\00:21:34.12 And he realized that they made no attempt to escape. 00:21:34.15\00:21:38.88 But rather they demonstrated personal concern toward him. 00:21:38.91\00:21:43.11 Can't you just hear the jailer asking, 00:21:43.14\00:21:46.65 "Oh, you who proclaim the way of salvation, 00:21:46.68\00:21:50.50 tell me about your powerful God. 00:21:50.53\00:21:52.95 What must I do to be saved? 00:21:52.98\00:21:56.17 What steps are necessary?" he asked. 00:21:56.20\00:21:59.10 And striking while the iron was hot, 00:21:59.13\00:22:01.79 Paul and Silas summarize the gospel of God's grace 00:22:01.82\00:22:06.12 with these words in Acts 16:30. 00:22:06.15\00:22:11.90 Excuse me, this is verse 31. 00:22:11.93\00:22:14.47 It says "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:22:14.50\00:22:18.96 and you will be saved, you and your household." 00:22:18.99\00:22:25.14 The jailer hurried the disciples to his home. 00:22:25.17\00:22:28.20 He awakened everyone in his household, 00:22:28.23\00:22:30.53 giving Paul and Silas the opportunity 00:22:30.56\00:22:33.17 to deliver the gospel of God's grace, 00:22:33.20\00:22:36.20 including without doubt 00:22:36.23\00:22:37.60 the message of repentance and baptism. 00:22:37.63\00:22:41.37 He and his whole household accepted Christ as their Savior 00:22:41.40\00:22:46.01 and were baptized immediately. 00:22:46.04\00:22:48.92 Now in Acts 10 we find the narrative 00:22:48.95\00:22:52.36 of the very first mission of grace to the Gentiles. 00:22:52.39\00:22:55.60 And it was when Cornelius, a centurion of the Roman army, 00:22:55.63\00:23:00.21 he lived in Caesarea. 00:23:00.24\00:23:02.17 And he had learned of the one true God. 00:23:02.20\00:23:05.07 And he became a devout believer. 00:23:05.10\00:23:07.77 As he was earnestly praying one day, 00:23:07.80\00:23:09.93 an angel appeared to him and instructed him 00:23:09.96\00:23:13.36 to send for the Apostle Peter to receive a message from God. 00:23:13.39\00:23:18.28 And meanwhile, grace was in action 00:23:18.31\00:23:20.71 in the city of Joppa preparing 00:23:20.74\00:23:22.46 Peter's heart for this mission of mercy. 00:23:22.49\00:23:26.62 God gave Peter a vision of a great sheet, 00:23:26.65\00:23:30.63 one that was filled with common and unclean animals. 00:23:30.66\00:23:34.38 And then he told Peter, "Rise, eat 00:23:34.41\00:23:37.89 and don't consider common that which he had cleansed." 00:23:37.92\00:23:43.45 Peter was perplexed. 00:23:43.48\00:23:45.28 He was struggling spiritually to gain understanding. 00:23:45.31\00:23:50.12 And he would eventually realize that God's purpose 00:23:50.15\00:23:54.09 was to purge prejudice from his maturing 00:23:54.12\00:23:59.75 but imperfect Christian heart. 00:23:59.78\00:24:02.31 You see, orthodox Jews did not share fellowship with Gentiles. 00:24:02.34\00:24:07.74 They considered them unclean. 00:24:07.77\00:24:09.69 And Peter and the other Jewish Christians 00:24:09.72\00:24:12.02 still practiced this prideful prohibition. 00:24:12.05\00:24:16.49 So Peter prepared for the potential backlash 00:24:16.52\00:24:21.17 against his own ministry that would surely result 00:24:21.20\00:24:24.38 from his visit to the Gentiles' home. 00:24:24.41\00:24:27.16 He enlisted six Jewish Christians 00:24:27.19\00:24:30.07 to accompany him on the mission. 00:24:30.10\00:24:32.47 When Peter and his company arrived in Caesarea, 00:24:32.50\00:24:36.32 Cornelius and his household were eager to hear 00:24:36.35\00:24:40.39 all things commanded by God. 00:24:40.42\00:24:43.34 Finally the puzzled Apostle perceived 00:24:43.37\00:24:47.21 the meaning of the vision. 00:24:47.24\00:24:49.00 And he said it was that God shows no partiality 00:24:49.03\00:24:53.44 but accepts whoever fears him and works righteousness. 00:24:53.47\00:24:57.76 So Peter preached a simple message 00:24:57.79\00:24:59.99 explaining how God had anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit 00:25:00.02\00:25:04.15 and power to heal those oppressed by the devil. 00:25:04.18\00:25:08.04 He shared the cruelty of Christ's crucifixion 00:25:08.07\00:25:12.17 and the glory of His resurrection. 00:25:12.20\00:25:14.91 And he told how God ordained Christ 00:25:14.94\00:25:18.48 to be judge of the living and the dead. 00:25:18.51\00:25:21.59 And he concluded by saying in Acts 10:43, 00:25:21.62\00:25:26.16 "To him all the prophets witness that, 00:25:26.19\00:25:29.40 through his name, whoever believes in Him 00:25:29.43\00:25:32.40 will receive remission of sins." 00:25:32.43\00:25:36.84 While Peter was still speaking, 00:25:36.87\00:25:39.02 God poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit 00:25:39.05\00:25:42.02 on Cornelius and his household. 00:25:42.05\00:25:44.49 They tapped into the grace pipeline by faith 00:25:44.52\00:25:47.75 and receiving the spirit began to magnify God. 00:25:47.78\00:25:51.85 So Peter asked his uncircumcised, excuse me, 00:25:51.88\00:25:55.33 his circumcised traveling companions. 00:25:55.36\00:25:58.48 He said can anyone forbid water that they should not be baptized 00:25:58.51\00:26:03.11 who received the Holy Spirit just as we have. 00:26:03.14\00:26:07.63 And they recognized the household of Cornelius 00:26:07.66\00:26:12.34 as brothers in the Lord. 00:26:12.37\00:26:14.11 And they baptized them in the name of the Lord. 00:26:14.14\00:26:16.92 And the Jerusalem Christians stayed on several days, 00:26:16.95\00:26:20.77 certainly providing further instruction. 00:26:20.80\00:26:24.53 Can it possibly be true? 00:26:24.56\00:26:26.78 Is belief the only requirement for salvation? Yes. 00:26:26.81\00:26:30.92 But we must recognize this word "believe" used in Acts 10:43 00:26:30.95\00:26:36.03 in reference to Cornelius' household, 00:26:36.06\00:26:38.33 in Acts 16:31 in reference 00:26:38.36\00:26:40.69 to the Philippian jailer's household. 00:26:40.72\00:26:42.97 It meant more in the original language 00:26:43.00\00:26:45.52 than simply accepting something as truth. 00:26:45.55\00:26:48.89 To believe in Christ, meant to acknowledge 00:26:48.92\00:26:51.27 His divinity and power, to rely on Him as Savior 00:26:51.30\00:26:56.18 and to commit to make him Lord of your life. 00:26:56.21\00:26:59.58 For those who relayed on Him expectations of dramatic changes 00:26:59.61\00:27:05.13 accompanied their act of believing. 00:27:05.16\00:27:07.87 In other words when they accepted Jesus Christ 00:27:07.90\00:27:12.20 as the greatest gift of God's grace, 00:27:12.23\00:27:15.33 the effect that He had on them was life changing. 00:27:15.36\00:27:19.85 Well, our time has gone by quickly today. 00:27:19.88\00:27:24.37 We hope that you will join us next time 00:27:24.40\00:27:27.06 and tune in each time with your Bible in hands 00:27:27.09\00:27:30.50 and a pen and paper so that you can take note 00:27:30.53\00:27:33.92 of this scriptures and use them for your further study. 00:27:33.95\00:27:38.75 My prayer for you, for me, for people around the world 00:27:38.78\00:27:43.94 who call up on the name of the Lord 00:27:43.97\00:27:45.84 is that we will grow in grace 00:27:45.87\00:27:49.35 and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:27:49.38\00:27:53.94 To Him be all the glory forever and ever. 00:27:53.97\00:27:58.15 Amen. Thank you. 00:27:58.18\00:28:00.01
