Unfortunately, we live in an age

of skepticism and secularism.

Today secularism
has come to the place

and people are skeptics.

And when it comes
to belief, they say:

"Well, you
can... you can believe

whatever you'd like to believe.

You can believe in
any God you want to. "

You hear that in many places...

over television. In fact,
00:18:49.23\00:18:51.58
a very popular
television series just recently
00:18:51.88\00:18:56.74
said that you could
simply believe in yourself.

Believe in yourself
and learn what you can
00:19:02.64\00:19:06.95
and that's really all
you'll need in this life

and for the future life.

You find that
things like scientology

who has come to the
forefront very much.

And if you look into
the belief of scientology,

it just simply tells
you that you are a god.

And if you look at it
and see what it's saying -

that you are a god -

my understanding
that that is idolatry...

and really the very
worst type of idolatry.

But this is... this
is where we are today.

And because of that, there's a
lot of things that have happened

in the last few years that
has shaken people's belief.

Shaken their
belief in Jesus Christ

because people are skeptical.

Books have come out
like this one particularly -

the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown -
00:20:02.40\00:20:05.34
in which they talk about Jesus
00:20:05.64\00:20:08.80
and say that He was really
not what He claimed to be.
00:20:09.00\00:20:12.59
And so you find this taught
00:20:12.89\00:20:15.42
and people having real questions
and doubts about Jesus.
00:20:15.62\00:20:19.62
And so tonight
we want to find out

Who Is Jesus?

Because of this skepticism,
you have had a tremendous
00:20:24.34\00:20:29.45
rise in what is
called Gnosticism.
00:20:29.65\00:20:33.91
Gnosis is a Greek
word that simply means
00:20:34.21\00:20:38.61
knowledge.
00:20:38.82\00:20:40.13
But this is something that
was very, very prevalent, folks,
00:20:40.43\00:20:45.19
in the second century.
00:20:45.39\00:20:46.94
And people that believed in
Gnostic teachings and beliefs...
00:20:47.14\00:20:53.14
this is what they taught.
00:20:53.34\00:20:55.52
Gnosticism has
four basic beliefs:
00:20:55.82\00:20:59.75
1. They believe
the world is evil.
00:21:00.06\00:21:02.35
That was their first
premise: the world is evil.
00:21:02.98\00:21:05.98
Secondly they believed the world
was made by an evil creator.
00:21:06.28\00:21:10.10
That it was made by
somebody who was very evil.
00:21:10.40\00:21:15.24
And thirdly, they
believed that salvation
00:21:15.54\00:21:19.10
consists of being rescued
from it... from this evil world.
00:21:19.30\00:21:23.81
They said that's
what salvation is
00:21:24.01\00:21:25.81
is being rescued
from this evil world.
00:21:26.02\00:21:28.20
And their fourth belief was:
00:21:28.50\00:21:30.26
rescue comes
00:21:30.42\00:21:31.66
through secret knowledge.

Now that is the
belief of Gnosticism,

and they believed that
this is the way it came.

And they believed that
Jesus Christ did not come

to die for you and I.

He didn't come to
pay the price for us

but He came here
to reveal knowledge.

He was the revealer
of this secret knowledge.

They believed that is
what is involved in it.

And they believed
that the virgin birth

and the resurrection
weren't really literal.

They were just a way of showing

how this took place
and with secret knowledge.

And so you have a
rise of Gnosticism.

If you go back and you read
this particular period of time,

you'll find this
was a hotbed in Egypt.

And you'll find that Gnosticism
was taught in Egypt...

particularly in
Alexandria and through there.

Why am I telling you this?

Because you, over
the last few years,
00:22:40.59\00:22:43.57
have come across
books such as this one

that we'll look at, and
it teaches these things.

Now this belief of
Gnosticism was coming into play,

folks, very strongly
in the second century.

John - the beloved
John, the disciple -

lived longer than
the other apostles...
00:23:04.16\00:23:06.78
so he's in the 90's
at that period of time.

He sees this rising.
00:23:13.01\00:23:15.31
He sees it already
beginning to take place

and so you find him
saying here in I John:

Very important
because Gnosticism said

it really wasn't in the flesh,
00:23:33.21\00:23:34.47
it was just a
revealer of knowledge.

So John saw this already
beginning to rise in his day,

and he said...

he said "this has already
started. The spirit of this is

already beginning to take place.

You and I would
not be aware of this

very much if there
weren't certain discoveries made

which has brought
things to the forefront

that people wonder about.

And they're such things as

the gospel of Thomas.

Now the gospel of Thomas
is a book that deals with
00:24:21.56\00:24:27.10
Gnostic teachings.
00:24:27.30\00:24:29.07
That's what it is.
00:24:29.37\00:24:30.57
And as you go in and
you read these books,

you... and by the
way, the gospel of Thomas,

guess where they found it?

In Egypt.

That's where it was found.

Back in the 1890's
is when it was found.

And it lay in there,
and really they didn't know

what they had until 1945

when they found
another copy of it

and they began to find
it was the gospel of Thomas.

But it's full of
Gnostic teachings.

Now, you need to put
things together because

you find that Matthew,
Mark, Luke, and John...

all those gospels
have been written.

This is 100 years or so after it

in which this is all beginning
to come to the forefront.

And to give you an idea
of some of the writings in it

I put one of the

that's in this book
of the gospel of Thomas.

And it says:

You know, they're
just... the teachings in it

are rather strange.

And you find that
these came to the forefront

and many people
have questions about it.

And they question
Christ because of these things

understanding it clearly.

Here's another one that came,

and it's called
the gospel of Judas.

The gospel of Judas, folks,

what it does is it takes Judas

They were fresh and

because the people believed.

Jesus tells an interesting story

This story is about each of us

who have been bought
by His precious blood
