Well, we've been taking a look
at Revelation the 17th chapter

That 17th chapter is the
last place in the scripture

beast or nations or powers.

And since it's the last place

it also takes and brings all

the prophecy together.

That's what it does, and that's
the reason we're looking at it.

Babylon as a lion.

And so Babylon
existed from 605 BC to 539 BC.

And we find as
we read God's Word

and as we look at history
00:13:11.47\00:13:13.14
that Babylon fell to who?
00:13:13.34\00:13:16.01
To Medo-Persia.
That was our next one.

And in this image in Daniel 2

Medo-Persia is pictured as
00:13:21.55\00:13:23.68
chest and arms of silver.

And also in Daniel 7
it's pictured as the bear.

And so we have that.

And we found out
that Medo-Persia existed

539 BC to 331 BC.

And at that time
Medo-Persia fell to... Greece.

OK. Greece was the next one
00:13:45.25\00:13:47.04
which is pictured as
belly and thighs of bronze

and as a leopard that had

four wings and four heads.

And we found out that that

represented Greece

that went from 331 BC

to 168 BC.

And we found
that Greece fell to?

Yes... fell to pagan Rome.

And that is pictured in the
scripture as the legs of iron.

Rome was made up of eastern
00:14:16.49\00:14:18.86
and western Rome

so the image has two legs.

Also it was
pictured as a dragon.

Represented a dragon that had

great iron teeth.

Devoured much.

Rome existed from 168 BC

to 476 AD.

That brings us step
by step down to the time

where we are tonight.

Now, we talked
about it last night.

We found out that
Rome turned her persecution

against the church.
00:14:51.55\00:14:52.94
And we talked about the
catacombs and how she persecuted

and all she did. That
persecution did something,
00:14:56.84\00:15:00.27
and I want you to listen to what
the scripture says about it.

Here in Acts the 8th
chapter verse 1 it says:

Rome turned her
power against the church,
00:15:12.21\00:15:15.91
all right?
00:15:16.01\00:15:17.04
OK?

They went out and
they preached to everybody

and they talked to
them about Jesus Christ
00:15:39.58\00:15:42.33
and what Jesus
Christ would do for them.

And the gospel spread
across the Roman Empire

like wildfire.

Men and women reached out
and accepted and believed it.

And so by the
time you reach 300 AD

almost half of the
Roman Empire is Christian.

So there has been a tremendous
change taking place here.

As far as the
Empire is concerned,

rather than most
of it being pagan

now half of it is Christian.

And as that began to take place,

there were
centers of Christianity

that began to develop.

And one of those centers was in
a place called Constantinople.

And today that
is called Istanbul.

OK? That was a
center of Christianity

because that was strong.
Lots of Christians there,

and it developed.

And then another place that
was a center of Christianity

was Alexandria, Egypt.
00:16:44.56\00:16:46.37
And that became a
center of Christianity,

and many, many
people there believed.

And the bishop
had great power there.
00:16:52.50\00:16:54.85
And then the other
place that developed was Rome.

Those were the three
centers of Christianity.

And as you go back and read the
history of the Christian church,

you find these were
very strong centers.
00:17:06.11\00:17:09.03
But in Rome something happened.

In Rome, since the church
00:17:12.87\00:17:18.72
had so much power,
00:17:18.92\00:17:20.76
it began to look
politically advantageous

to belong to the church.
00:17:25.47\00:17:27.31
And so now the
church was accepted in
00:17:27.51\00:17:31.85
as somebody they
all wanted to follow.

And you found
that the Roman leaders

decided that it would be
best to become Christians
00:17:37.73\00:17:40.69
like Constantine and others
00:17:40.79\00:17:43.39
decided they
wanted to be a Christian.
00:17:43.59\00:17:45.43
And so you have a
change taking place,
00:17:45.63\00:17:48.03
and great numbers of
people embracing Christianity.

At this time in history, folks,
00:17:51.85\00:17:55.35
the church has become popular.
00:17:55.55\00:17:57.97
But also at this time in history
00:17:58.17\00:18:01.66
there is a shift taking place,
00:18:01.86\00:18:04.36
and the Goths - or the Germanic
people - are coming down
00:18:04.56\00:18:09.22
on the Roman Empire and
breaking it up into pieces.
00:18:09.42\00:18:13.32
These were the Germanic people:
00:18:13.52\00:18:15.80
such tribes as the Anglo-Saxons,
the Franks, the Herulii,
00:18:16.00\00:18:19.45
the Vandals. They were all
coming down on the Roman Empire
00:18:19.65\00:18:22.99
and breaking it to pieces.
00:18:23.19\00:18:24.62
There is an emporer at this
time and his name is Justinian.
00:18:24.82\00:18:29.40
And Justinian is
fighting the Goths...
00:18:29.60\00:18:33.50
trying to push them back.
00:18:33.70\00:18:35.74
He has a general by
the name of Belisarius,
00:18:35.94\00:18:40.43
and Belisarius is
fighting these Goths, trying to
00:18:40.63\00:18:44.42
keep them from getting...
taking over the kingdom.

In the city of Rome,
00:18:48.38\00:18:53.91
there is a bishop.
00:18:54.11\00:18:56.40
There were
bishops in Constantinople.
00:18:56.60\00:18:59.03
There were
bishops at Alexandria.
00:18:59.23\00:19:01.75
There was a bishop in Rome.
00:19:01.95\00:19:03.09
The bishop of Rome was a
very, very strong person.
00:19:03.29\00:19:06.64
But this bishop's
name was Silverius.
00:19:06.84\00:19:10.88
Silverius was a godly man.
00:19:11.08\00:19:14.13
He loved the Lord;
he loved the people.
00:19:14.33\00:19:16.30
He tried to do what he
could to support the people.
00:19:16.50\00:19:19.39
But he refused - absolutely
refused - to have anything to do
00:19:19.59\00:19:25.42
with the war that was going
on between Rome and the Goths.

Justinian and the Goths.

And so any time the Goths
got close to the city of Rome

Silverius had them
close all the gates
00:19:37.51\00:19:39.82
and wouldn't let them in.

If the... if Justinian's army
got close to the city of Rome,

the bishop had all the gates
shut; wouldn't let them in.

The Goths and Justinian's
army had been fighting

and they had backed
Justinian's army all the way up

to the walls of
the city of Rome.

Silverius has had
all the gates shut.
00:20:05.09\00:20:08.10
Belisarius has sent a
note to Justinian saying

"do something or we're lost. "

It so happens that
Justinian's wife is a Christian.
00:20:16.69\00:20:20.42
She also is a
friend of the bishop.
00:20:20.62\00:20:23.69
And so he asked her if she
would plead with the bishop

to open the gates
of the city of Rome
00:20:28.18\00:20:30.59
and save his army...

which out of respect to her

Silverius raised the
gates of the city of Rome,

let Justinian's army in,

and closed the gates.

Justinian and
Belisarius, his general,

had already agreed that
if they got inside the city

they would banish the bishop.

So in history you
have this statement:

Now watch carefully.

So they banished Silverius

and listen to what happened:

Now Justinian, I am
sure, never had in mind

what took place.

I'm sure that he saw
Vigilius just as a puppet

that would do his bidding.

But that isn't what happened.

When he stepped to
the seat of the bishop,

history says that he
stepped to the seat of Caesar

and siezed the scepter.

He took over, began to
rule. And thus you find

that he ruled in
their place. Excuse me.

This happened 538 AD.

more historical statements.

Rome became the political head
