Now Christ understood and knew

the destruction of Jerusalem.

when Jerusalem is surrounded

there would be just a time.

the Roman general came
up and surrounded Jerusalem.

particular reason

withdrew his troops.

And when he did,
Jesus had told them

this is what they were to do.

He said when that happens, flee.

there. Leave Jerusalem.

And that's exactly
what the Christians did.

Because Christ told them
this will be a very, very

difficult time. But...

He told them: "Do this.
Get out of there. Flee. "

Why that's
exactly what happened.

And the Roman
government, the Roman power,

came down, overthrew Jerusalem,

and burned the city.

Rome ruled.

Jesus told them
something they were to look for.

That they were to
be... watch for after that.

He said: "After the
destruction of Jerusalem

the next thing there's going

And Rome turned her fury

and her power

They fled.

And then the scripture
begins to pick up and talk about

something that was
going to take place.

And I want you to follow now
because I'm going to go through

several prophecies with you

just quickly to show you
how the scripture talks about

these things that
were going to happen.

Notice what is has
to say about this time

of tribulation because He said:

After the
destruction of Jerusalem,

after the Christians fled,

then after that time there
would be great tribulation.

That's what He
told them would happen.

It's talking
about the fourth beast.

He wished to know the
truth about the fourth beast.

terrible, exceedingly dreadful.

This in scripture is
pictured as pagan Rome.

This was pagan Rome...

that fourth beast.

Now it goes on and says here:

So this particular fourth
beast which was pagan Rome

he said he wanted to
know the truth about it.

And then he said after
that there would be ten horns

particularly the little one

Now let me tell you
what's happening here.

The... empires, folks,
are very much like people.

Like men they
rise and they fall.

And as you read history,
you'll find empire after empire

comes up then it drops
off and another one comes on

the scene of action. Rome is
falling into this same place.

Rome has risen and
she is now on a decline.

And the decline that she's
on is because there have been

Germanic tribes,
these ten Germanic tribes

have moved in
on the Roman empire
00:20:03.64\00:20:06.74
and they're breaking it up.
00:20:06.95\00:20:08.44
There's a Roman emperor at this
time by the name of Justinian.
00:20:08.64\00:20:14.05
And Justinian is fighting
the Goths, the Germanic tribes,
00:20:14.25\00:20:17.97
trying to hold them back.
00:20:18.17\00:20:20.55
He has a general by
the name of Belisarius,
00:20:20.75\00:20:25.81
and Belisarius is
fighting these Goths
00:20:25.94\00:20:29.94
which are made up of
tribes like the Anglo-Saxons,
00:20:30.14\00:20:32.91
the Franks, the Huruli,
the Vandals, the Ostrogoths
00:20:33.11\00:20:35.55
and all these different Germanic
tribes... they're fighting them.

The Goths have
backed Justinian's army

clear to the walls
of the city of Rome.

It looks like they're going
to wipe out Justinian's army.

Justinian's general,
Belisarius, has sent a note

to Justinian saying
"Do something for us. "

Inside the city of Rome,
there is the Bishop of Rome.
00:21:06.97\00:21:11.55
The Bishop of
Rome's name is Sylvester.
00:21:11.75\00:21:15.39
Sylvester is a godly man.
00:21:15.59\00:21:18.46
He loves the Lord,
he serves the people.
00:21:18.66\00:21:21.43
He tries to do
that which is right,
00:21:21.63\00:21:23.67
but he has refused to have
any part to do with the war
00:21:23.87\00:21:28.51
between the Goths and Justinian.
00:21:28.71\00:21:30.80
So any time Justinian's army
got close to the city of Rome
00:21:31.00\00:21:36.15
Sylvester had the gates
shut; would not let them in.
00:21:36.35\00:21:41.02
If the Goths got
close to the city of Rome,

he closed the gates;
would not let them in.

Refused to have part of it.

So they backed Justinian's
army clear to the walls of Rome

and he's shut the
gates; won't let them in.

Justinian went
to his wife, queen,

who is a Christian.

She also happens to be a
very close friend of the Bishop.

And he pled with her to do
something to save his army.

To talk to the Bishop, try
to get him to raise the gates

of the city of Rome.
And out of respect to her...

She went to the Bishop, talked
to him, and out of respect

to her he raised the gates

and let Justinian's
army inside the city,

and kept the Goths out.

But Belisarius and Justinian

had already agreed that if
they got inside the city of Rome

Now there's a reason for this.

Justinian sees his
kingdom falling apart.

He wants to do what he
can to pull it together

and he feels that if he can
not control it just politically

but if he could control it

from a religious standpoint,

he'd be able to
hold it together.

And so he banished Sylvester
and he put his own puppet

in by the name of Virgilius

and he placed him on the
seat of the Bishop of Rome.

This is what it says in history:

Now all of a sudden you find
something beginning to rise.

You've had pagan
Rome up unto this point,

of this comes papal Rome

Now you see, Justinian

something else happened.

time of tribulation.

what it's talking about.
