Welcome back. 00:00:02.20\00:00:03.53 Next up, we traveled to the country of India, 00:00:03.57\00:00:05.37 and Rick McEdward has a story there. 00:00:05.40\00:00:08.20 Thank you, Gary. 00:00:08.24\00:00:09.87 I am here in India 00:00:09.90\00:00:11.94 and we're talking with pastors 00:00:11.97\00:00:14.91 about the great mission challenge 00:00:14.94\00:00:16.95 of the big cities. 00:00:16.98\00:00:18.68 India, of course, 00:00:18.71\00:00:20.05 has some of the largest cities in the world. 00:00:20.08\00:00:21.85 And I'd like to introduce to you, Pastor Sharma, 00:00:21.88\00:00:25.05 who is in one of these large cities. 00:00:25.09\00:00:27.49 Pastor Sharma, welcome to our program today. 00:00:27.52\00:00:30.13 Thank you. 00:00:30.16\00:00:31.49 Can you tell us, sir, which city you work in? 00:00:31.53\00:00:32.86 I work in the national capital region of Delhi. 00:00:32.89\00:00:35.86 Oh, really? 00:00:35.90\00:00:37.23 Yes. 00:00:37.27\00:00:38.60 Now Delhi is the large city, 00:00:38.63\00:00:39.97 about how many people are there? 00:00:40.00\00:00:41.34 Oh, there are about 17 million peoples, 00:00:41.37\00:00:42.80 but if you compare from other cities, 00:00:42.84\00:00:46.07 it's quite big. 00:00:46.11\00:00:47.81 If you take into account the close by vicinities, 00:00:47.84\00:00:51.31 the suburbs of Delhi, actually the population 00:00:51.35\00:00:54.42 would total up to about 22 million in all. 00:00:54.45\00:00:57.35 Making it one of the largest cities in the world. 00:00:57.39\00:00:59.35 One of the largest cities in the world. 00:00:59.39\00:01:00.72 So in terms of how we work in such an environment, 00:01:00.76\00:01:05.19 I mean you are surrounded 00:01:05.23\00:01:06.80 by masses of people on a routine basis. 00:01:06.83\00:01:09.13 Oh, yes. Yes, yes. Vehicles, traffic... 00:01:09.16\00:01:12.13 I was in the Delhi market just the other day 00:01:12.17\00:01:14.17 and it was crowded, 00:01:14.20\00:01:15.54 It is. It is. 00:01:15.57\00:01:16.91 So how in that kind of environment... 00:01:16.94\00:01:19.11 how do you kind of taken the mission challenge? 00:01:19.14\00:01:21.24 What do you... 00:01:21.28\00:01:22.61 Well, how do you look at what's there? 00:01:22.64\00:01:24.51 Well, it looks quite chaotic at times, 00:01:24.55\00:01:28.22 but we are pretty focused on our mission and what we do. 00:01:28.25\00:01:32.12 We should say that, we work with people. 00:01:32.15\00:01:35.82 That's our primary objective to spread the good news, 00:01:35.86\00:01:41.93 the gospel news to people. 00:01:41.96\00:01:43.67 We tell them about good things. 00:01:43.70\00:01:45.30 We tell them about God. 00:01:45.33\00:01:46.94 We tell them about good habits. 00:01:46.97\00:01:49.17 We tell them about different things, 00:01:49.20\00:01:51.41 which help to live a better life 00:01:51.44\00:01:53.48 for each of them. 00:01:53.51\00:01:54.84 Now, some of this is obviously done 00:01:54.88\00:01:56.21 through community outreach, community events, 00:01:56.24\00:01:59.41 helping people right where they are. 00:01:59.45\00:02:01.35 What kind of things are happening in Delhi, 00:02:01.38\00:02:03.59 that would be really is illustrative 00:02:03.62\00:02:07.06 of the way God loves us? 00:02:07.09\00:02:08.76 Well, I'll tell you an illustration. 00:02:08.79\00:02:10.96 See, we have a community there, 00:02:10.99\00:02:12.83 a Nepalese community. 00:02:12.86\00:02:14.33 And we have a special focus on this Nepalese community. 00:02:14.36\00:02:18.37 We have just raised up a congregation. 00:02:18.40\00:02:21.14 And if you say by way of outreach, 00:02:21.17\00:02:23.04 community outreach, 00:02:23.07\00:02:24.41 I would say that we are focusing 00:02:24.44\00:02:25.77 on this Nepalese community. 00:02:25.81\00:02:28.21 They are people who have migrated from Nepal 00:02:28.24\00:02:30.58 and they are staying there 00:02:30.61\00:02:32.45 for livelihood purposes in Delhi. 00:02:32.48\00:02:34.45 Do you feel like 00:02:34.48\00:02:35.82 they're more like refugee or emigrant community, 00:02:35.85\00:02:38.05 they're coming for helping their income level? 00:02:38.09\00:02:41.02 Yes, yes. Okay. 00:02:41.06\00:02:42.39 They're little better than refugee. 00:02:42.42\00:02:43.83 Refugee hardly have any rights and all, 00:02:43.86\00:02:46.49 but they're pretty established people. 00:02:46.53\00:02:48.10 All right. 00:02:48.13\00:02:49.46 So we are targeting the kids there, 00:02:49.50\00:02:51.20 so we can teach the kids and educate the kids somehow. 00:02:51.23\00:02:54.74 Provide them basic primary level of education 00:02:54.77\00:02:57.61 and than they can go on to study something else. 00:02:57.64\00:02:59.84 So that's one way we are doing community outreach from Delhi. 00:02:59.87\00:03:02.64 So is this a literacy 00:03:02.68\00:03:04.01 or is this actually a school that we have in that area? 00:03:04.05\00:03:07.15 We don't have a school. 00:03:07.18\00:03:08.62 It is just a rudimentary form of education 00:03:08.65\00:03:10.75 we give, just the basics. 00:03:10.79\00:03:12.29 So there is a platform for them, 00:03:12.32\00:03:14.36 they can move on to higher education. 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.46 And that's one way we tell us... 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.79 we tell them about the word of the Lord, 00:03:18.83\00:03:20.83 about good things of gospel message. 00:03:20.86\00:03:23.30 Helping people right where they are at. 00:03:23.33\00:03:24.67 Yes, yes. 00:03:24.70\00:03:26.03 So I suppose in Delhi that the challenge is large, 00:03:26.07\00:03:30.01 so that there is a need 00:03:30.04\00:03:32.27 for many different ways of evolvement... 00:03:32.31\00:03:34.68 Yes, there is. 00:03:34.71\00:03:36.04 How you think community service etcetera... 00:03:36.08\00:03:37.41 Yes. 00:03:37.45\00:03:38.78 Can you tell us anything else 00:03:38.81\00:03:40.15 about the work that's going on in the Delhi metro area? 00:03:40.18\00:03:42.35 Well, this particular place I am talking is Baljeet Nagar, 00:03:42.38\00:03:45.99 and we have an incharge here, 00:03:46.02\00:03:47.72 who is a lady and who is of Nepalese origin. 00:03:47.76\00:03:51.33 And then we also... 00:03:51.36\00:03:52.69 So she can communicate in the language, 00:03:52.73\00:03:54.23 she understands the situation. 00:03:54.26\00:03:55.86 You wouldn't believe, we don't have 00:03:55.90\00:03:57.37 any Sabbath school supplies for us, 00:03:57.40\00:03:59.97 but we get them over from Nepal, 00:04:00.00\00:04:01.44 so that these people could be benefited 00:04:01.47\00:04:03.30 in this place. 00:04:03.34\00:04:04.67 So they can learn it in their own language. 00:04:04.71\00:04:06.04 Yes, in their own language. 00:04:06.07\00:04:07.41 So we are specific, we are people specific, 00:04:07.44\00:04:08.88 we are situation specific. 00:04:08.91\00:04:10.81 Let me tell you one more example. 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.18 There is a place called Aaya Nagar, 00:04:12.21\00:04:15.08 and we have a sewing center running there 00:04:15.12\00:04:17.85 to help the ladies, the poor ladies. 00:04:17.89\00:04:20.06 We also have a sanitation class 00:04:20.09\00:04:21.76 running in that area. 00:04:21.79\00:04:23.12 So the sewing center is teaching ladies to sew? 00:04:23.16\00:04:25.06 Yes. 00:04:25.09\00:04:26.43 And then they can stitch things, 00:04:26.46\00:04:28.23 and make a little income from sewing. 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.77 Yes. Very good. 00:04:30.80\00:04:32.13 That's in consonance 00:04:32.17\00:04:33.50 and in partnership with the ADRA, 00:04:33.54\00:04:35.77 where we have provided the place 00:04:35.80\00:04:38.01 and they have provided us the resources. 00:04:38.04\00:04:40.58 And tell me little bit more about the sanitation program 00:04:40.61\00:04:43.14 that you are mentioning? 00:04:43.18\00:04:44.51 Well, actually the sanitation is pretty bad in Delhi. 00:04:44.55\00:04:47.45 Some of the problems we face in Delhi is 00:04:47.48\00:04:49.55 of sanitation, of sewerage 00:04:49.58\00:04:52.19 and one is of the income of our workers is pretty low. 00:04:52.22\00:04:58.06 So because of that, 00:04:58.09\00:04:59.43 the health aspect is little bad 00:04:59.46\00:05:01.30 and we need to work on that with our people. 00:05:01.33\00:05:04.77 So we have volunteers, who we give training, 00:05:04.80\00:05:08.24 we impart training to them on basic health courses, 00:05:08.27\00:05:12.07 and then they teach of the field 00:05:12.11\00:05:14.28 in the community at large. 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.24 Wonderful, so you would have 00:05:16.28\00:05:18.28 a wide variety of community projects going on? 00:05:18.31\00:05:20.98 Yes, we have. 00:05:21.02\00:05:22.35 As a way of sharing God's love with the community. 00:05:22.38\00:05:24.05 Yes, we have. Yes, yes. 00:05:24.09\00:05:26.76 You know, just the other day 00:05:26.79\00:05:28.46 I was in the market in Delhi... 00:05:28.49\00:05:31.09 Yes, sir. 00:05:31.13\00:05:32.46 Probably hundreds of thousands of people around me 00:05:32.49\00:05:35.06 at any given moment, 00:05:35.10\00:05:36.97 and the wide variety of colors and products and the dry goods 00:05:37.00\00:05:41.60 and the mechanical parts, etcetera. 00:05:41.64\00:05:44.44 Some may look at it as 00:05:44.47\00:05:45.91 maybe like you said you reference chaotic... 00:05:45.94\00:05:47.71 Yes. 00:05:47.74\00:05:49.08 But in actual, 00:05:49.11\00:05:50.45 I would see there is an organization to the cities, 00:05:50.48\00:05:52.65 that actually helps in some ways, 00:05:52.68\00:05:55.52 'cause there's natural networks. 00:05:55.55\00:05:59.35 What's our church membership in the metro area of Delhi? 00:05:59.39\00:06:03.76 Our church membership in metro area 00:06:03.79\00:06:05.59 is about 3,500 people, that's the membership we have. 00:06:05.63\00:06:10.33 So there we have 22 million people 00:06:10.37\00:06:14.67 and only about 3,500 members? 00:06:14.70\00:06:16.30 Yes, so the challenge is large. 00:06:16.34\00:06:18.44 So sharing person by person... 00:06:18.47\00:06:19.97 Yes, sharing person by person. 00:06:20.01\00:06:21.34 Is the way to go. 00:06:21.38\00:06:22.71 We go on small group dynamics 00:06:22.74\00:06:24.71 and that's the method we follow. 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.65 And I think that suits us in Delhi. 00:06:26.68\00:06:28.28 Sure, thank you so much for being with us today, 00:06:28.32\00:06:30.89 Pastor Sharma. 00:06:30.92\00:06:32.25 I want to encourage all of you to pray for our big cities. 00:06:32.29\00:06:36.36 The challenge is there. 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.19 There're many people 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.36 in whether it's the wealthy areas 00:06:40.40\00:06:42.40 or the slums, 00:06:42.43\00:06:43.77 they need to know in practical ways 00:06:43.80\00:06:46.23 the love of God. 00:06:46.27\00:06:47.60 Next up, we travel to the South Pacific 00:06:47.64\00:06:49.90 into Suva, Fiji. 00:06:49.94\00:06:52.01 A place that's kind of special to me, 00:06:52.04\00:06:53.58 because that's where I was born a few years ago. 00:06:53.61\00:06:55.84 And we're gonna visit 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.21 a 13th Sabbath offering project, 00:06:57.25\00:06:59.48 that your offerings 00:06:59.51\00:07:00.85 will help support this quarter. 00:07:00.88\00:07:02.38 Meet Nemaia, 00:07:08.79\00:07:10.26 he is a Seventh-day Adventist church member, 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.13 who lives and works in Suva, Fiji. 00:07:12.16\00:07:15.40 Nemaia has a passion for health 00:07:15.43\00:07:17.40 and wants to share health tips with everyone he meets. 00:07:17.43\00:07:20.47 Today, he is visiting a local school to educate 00:07:20.50\00:07:23.27 the community about nutrition and dental health. 00:07:23.30\00:07:26.17 So I am here this afternoon with a dietician 00:07:26.21\00:07:30.28 to deliver to them some health information. 00:07:30.31\00:07:34.62 Members of the local community were invited 00:07:34.65\00:07:36.55 to this free meeting to learn basic principles 00:07:36.58\00:07:39.22 that will improve their lives. 00:07:39.25\00:07:40.86 His dental instructions are helpful 00:07:40.89\00:07:42.62 for the young and older like. 00:07:42.66\00:07:44.69 And Nemaia has fun doing it. 00:07:44.73\00:07:47.56 I enjoy doing this, 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.36 because we promote to people how to live daily, 00:07:49.40\00:07:54.47 from all age groups. 00:07:54.50\00:07:56.47 We're starting from the womb, 00:07:56.50\00:07:57.84 right up to the senior citizens, 00:07:57.87\00:07:59.41 everybody is special. 00:07:59.44\00:08:00.78 And everybody need to know 00:08:00.81\00:08:03.55 how to live a healthy lifestyle, 00:08:03.58\00:08:05.71 and have hope in their life everyday. 00:08:05.75\00:08:10.45 It's important for Nemaia to share a message of hope 00:08:10.49\00:08:13.09 to the people he educates. 00:08:13.12\00:08:14.82 He promotes a holistic method of living, 00:08:14.86\00:08:17.29 so that the people can live a healthy balanced life. 00:08:17.33\00:08:20.96 A health is our-- 00:08:21.00\00:08:22.33 It's everything... 00:08:22.36\00:08:23.77 since it deals with the physical, 00:08:23.80\00:08:25.30 mental, social and spiritual. 00:08:25.33\00:08:27.64 And we just can't sort of divide 00:08:27.67\00:08:30.54 or make it compartmentalize everything 00:08:30.57\00:08:32.51 because it has to be in holiness 00:08:32.54\00:08:34.51 and wellness is holiness. 00:08:34.54\00:08:36.21 And when we promote health, we're promoting, 00:08:36.24\00:08:39.58 trying to touch the people's thinking or lifestyle. 00:08:39.61\00:08:42.98 And what they think about, how they perceive this, 00:08:43.02\00:08:45.62 sort of directly or indirectly, 00:08:45.65\00:08:47.72 they're touching whole aspect of a person. 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.29 In Fiji, the rate of non-communicable diseases 00:08:53.29\00:08:56.77 is quickly increasing. 00:08:56.80\00:08:58.33 Fiji's ministry of health 00:08:58.37\00:08:59.93 is working hard to educate the nation 00:08:59.97\00:09:01.84 on how to live a healthier lifestyle. 00:09:01.87\00:09:04.14 They work closely 00:09:04.17\00:09:05.51 with the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:09:05.54\00:09:06.91 to teach quickly and effectively. 00:09:06.94\00:09:10.35 Nemaia now works directly for the ministry of health, 00:09:10.38\00:09:13.18 to present how to make lifestyle changes 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.48 and prevent disease. 00:09:15.52\00:09:17.39 So if the disease is caused by lifestyle, 00:09:17.42\00:09:20.72 then the solution must be oriented 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.66 towards lifestyle at least, 00:09:22.69\00:09:24.79 we know that 80 percent of the solution 00:09:24.83\00:09:27.40 to any non-communicable disease is lifestyle 00:09:27.43\00:09:30.77 and 20 percent medicine. 00:09:30.80\00:09:32.20 So that's where we're currently working. 00:09:32.23\00:09:35.27 As the Adventist church 00:09:35.30\00:09:36.64 and Fiji's ministry of health continue to work together, 00:09:36.67\00:09:39.87 they have hope for a bright future. 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.21 They're putting a major emphasis 00:09:42.24\00:09:43.78 on nutrition and healthy eating, 00:09:43.81\00:09:45.61 because this will make a huge difference 00:09:45.65\00:09:47.32 on the population's health. 00:09:47.35\00:09:49.08 Isimeli is the national advisor 00:09:49.12\00:09:51.02 for non-communicable diseases and awareness, 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.09 although he is not an Adventist, 00:09:54.12\00:09:55.62 he is enthusiastic 00:09:55.66\00:09:56.99 about collaborating with the Adventist church. 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.83 Not all Fijians smoke, it's one, 00:09:59.86\00:10:03.77 only 17 percent of Fijians smoke, 00:10:03.80\00:10:05.80 so that's not much of a issue to be. 00:10:05.83\00:10:09.40 Not all Fijians drink alcohol, 00:10:09.44\00:10:11.44 it's just about 30 percent, so 70 percent don't. 00:10:11.47\00:10:15.11 Not all Fijians are physically active, 00:10:15.14\00:10:18.01 but all Fijians eat 00:10:18.05\00:10:20.05 and I think nutrition is the power house 00:10:20.08\00:10:22.05 of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:10:22.08\00:10:24.55 And I feel because 00:10:24.59\00:10:25.92 is that common denominator that I am 00:10:25.95\00:10:28.59 rather than reinventing the wheel. 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.99 I believe if the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:10:31.03\00:10:33.53 comes in with the message 00:10:33.56\00:10:34.96 that is health message that's strong in nutrition, 00:10:35.00\00:10:38.43 it should really help in that. 00:10:38.47\00:10:39.93 For me NCD in Fiji which is a crises, 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.97 it's a nutritional issue. 00:10:43.00\00:10:45.27 As you can see, 00:10:45.31\00:10:46.64 the well being of the Fijian people 00:10:46.68\00:10:48.18 is becoming a major emphasis throughout the country. 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.81 In Fiji's capital Suva, 00:10:50.85\00:10:53.01 the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:10:53.05\00:10:54.52 is already conducting health seminars 00:10:54.55\00:10:56.65 through church members like Nemaia. 00:10:56.69\00:10:59.45 As we continue to promote health, 00:10:59.49\00:11:01.36 people notice the church's principles and values. 00:11:01.39\00:11:04.39 It's a platform 00:11:04.43\00:11:05.76 for the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.13 to improve the quality of life in Fiji. 00:11:07.16\00:11:09.83 This quarter, a portion of your 13th Sabbath offerings 00:11:09.86\00:11:12.87 will go towards building a center of influence 00:11:12.90\00:11:15.30 focused on health and wellness, 00:11:15.34\00:11:17.17 where the community can come to learn and be treated. 00:11:17.21\00:11:20.64 They already have the site picked out 00:11:20.68\00:11:22.58 and they're eager to expand their health ministry. 00:11:22.61\00:11:25.88 And here is the proposed or the possible site 00:11:25.91\00:11:29.52 for our wellness center 00:11:29.55\00:11:30.92 that the Fiji mission wants to have the wellness center 00:11:30.95\00:11:34.09 based in Suva, 00:11:34.12\00:11:35.46 so you can see the site behind me. 00:11:35.49\00:11:38.19 Please pray for the church in Fiji. 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.13 Pray that it will continue to reach its community 00:11:40.16\00:11:42.33 through health and wellness. 00:11:42.36\00:11:44.03 I just want to thank all the churches 00:11:44.07\00:11:46.74 throughout the world for their contribution 00:11:46.77\00:11:49.04 that they're going to give in order for the city of Suva, 00:11:49.07\00:11:53.24 and especially Fiji mission to have a site 00:11:53.27\00:11:56.01 or to have a building for the wellness center. 00:11:56.04\00:11:59.55 Oh, thanks so much for joining us on today's program. 00:12:17.20\00:12:20.24 And I hope that you've been inspired and challenged 00:12:20.27\00:12:23.00 by what you've seen and heard, 00:12:23.04\00:12:24.87 from the South Pacific, to India, to here in Manaus. 00:12:24.91\00:12:29.41 Many men and women, boys and girls 00:12:29.44\00:12:31.21 are sharing the light of God's love 00:12:31.25\00:12:33.78 and touching the lives of many, many people. 00:12:33.82\00:12:36.28 And I want to thank you 00:12:36.32\00:12:37.72 for your continuing support of mission, 00:12:37.75\00:12:40.66 your prayers, your finances, and your personal involvement. 00:12:40.69\00:12:44.16 Before we go, 00:12:44.19\00:12:45.53 I'd like to offer you a small money bank. 00:12:45.56\00:12:48.10 This is just a free gift, 00:12:48.13\00:12:49.46 it's a little reminder that you can put in your home, 00:12:49.50\00:12:52.43 teach your children, 00:12:52.47\00:12:53.80 you can use it in Sabbath schools. 00:12:53.84\00:12:55.27 But basically, it's the old fashioned, 00:12:55.30\00:12:57.27 putting some change, 00:12:57.31\00:12:58.64 putting some money for mission. 00:12:58.67\00:13:00.01 Collect it together, bring it to the Sabbath school 00:13:00.04\00:13:02.04 or wherever for the mission offerings. 00:13:02.08\00:13:03.41 And it's just a weekly reminder 00:13:03.45\00:13:06.25 of the importance of giving 00:13:06.28\00:13:08.88 from what's God has given us to help others. 00:13:08.92\00:13:12.09 Well for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause, 00:13:12.12\00:13:14.39 and I hope that you can join me next time 00:13:14.42\00:13:16.22 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:13:16.26\00:13:18.83
