The Amazon, the river, jungles, 00:00:15.81\00:00:18.78 tribal peoples, anacondas 00:00:18.81\00:00:21.45 and big cities coming up next. 00:00:21.48\00:00:24.05 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:28.42\00:00:30.93 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:30.96\00:00:33.86 He gave us a mission. 00:00:33.90\00:00:36.60 Jesus said "Go, 00:00:36.63\00:00:39.10 go unto all the world telling them of His love." 00:00:39.13\00:00:43.97 This is our mission. 00:00:44.01\00:00:46.04 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:46.07\00:00:47.84 Hello, and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:54.12\00:00:57.42 coming to you today from Manaus in Brazil. 00:00:57.45\00:01:00.62 We're here in the heart of the Amazon region, 00:01:00.66\00:01:03.53 and behind me is this football stadium 00:01:03.56\00:01:05.59 that was constructed especially for 2014 FIFA World Cup. 00:01:05.63\00:01:11.37 It's a world cup 00:01:11.40\00:01:12.73 that many Brazilians tried to forget about, 00:01:12.77\00:01:14.97 but it's the time when people come together 00:01:15.00\00:01:17.74 and they cheer for their teams, 00:01:17.77\00:01:20.21 and it's a time when a lot of money you spend, 00:01:20.24\00:01:23.31 because people are rallying around what... 00:01:23.35\00:01:25.68 For some, it's almost a religion. 00:01:25.71\00:01:28.35 As we look at the church, we rally together too, 00:01:28.38\00:01:31.09 we probably don't make as much noise 00:01:31.12\00:01:32.45 on Sabbath morning. 00:01:32.49\00:01:33.82 But we come around a common cause 00:01:33.86\00:01:35.72 and common causes, 00:01:35.76\00:01:37.19 and one of those causes is mission. 00:01:37.23\00:01:39.69 And every quarter the 13th Sabbath offerings 00:01:39.73\00:01:42.43 go to special projects for mission. 00:01:42.46\00:01:45.03 And doesn't matter where you are in the world, 00:01:45.07\00:01:46.90 if you're a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:01:46.94\00:01:48.74 you can contribute to the 13th Sabbath offering, 00:01:48.77\00:01:51.94 where we're doing something special in mission. 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.98 Next up, let's travel to Papua New Guinea 00:01:55.01\00:01:57.48 and visit a 13th Sabbath offering project. 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.62 Papua New Guinea is one of the largest countries 00:02:04.82\00:02:07.46 in the South Pacific. 00:02:07.49\00:02:08.82 That terrain ranges from coastal towns 00:02:08.86\00:02:11.13 to remote highland villages. 00:02:11.16\00:02:13.50 This is a people oriented society, 00:02:13.53\00:02:15.70 and a lot of socializing happens in the marketplace. 00:02:15.73\00:02:18.50 Judith lives in the city of Lae. 00:02:29.31\00:02:31.78 Judith and her daughter Marjolaine are very close 00:02:31.81\00:02:35.12 and love to play together. 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.39 Marjolaine was adopted when she was just a baby. 00:02:37.42\00:02:40.39 Judith was walking home one day 00:02:40.42\00:02:42.19 and heard cries coming from a nearby cemetery. 00:02:42.22\00:02:45.03 She walked into the cemetery 00:02:45.06\00:02:46.59 and found a crying baby in terrible condition. 00:02:46.63\00:02:49.73 Judith took the orphaned baby home, 00:02:49.76\00:02:51.73 and nourished her back to health. 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.77 Marjolaine has lived with Judith ever since. 00:02:53.80\00:02:56.30 And they love each other as family. 00:02:56.34\00:03:00.04 Judith care so much for the people around her, 00:03:00.08\00:03:02.88 and dedicates a lot of time to impacting their lives. 00:03:02.91\00:03:06.75 Today, she is teaching a group of people 00:03:06.78\00:03:08.85 how to let God be included in their lives. 00:03:08.88\00:03:11.75 Judith has been meeting this group for sometime now. 00:03:11.79\00:03:14.92 They frequently welcome new people 00:03:14.96\00:03:16.49 to be a part of their events. 00:03:16.52\00:03:18.66 Judith discusses how their goals, 00:03:18.69\00:03:21.00 daily habits and practical skills 00:03:21.03\00:03:23.73 all play a part in their success. 00:03:23.77\00:03:25.90 She makes sure to keep God in the center. 00:03:25.93\00:03:29.17 Most of the people in this group 00:03:29.20\00:03:30.91 don't have regular jobs, 00:03:30.94\00:03:32.44 so it's important for them to learn a skill or craft. 00:03:32.47\00:03:35.51 Some are recovering from drug or alcohol abuse, 00:03:35.54\00:03:38.88 other's lack the education 00:03:38.91\00:03:40.65 required to get a decent paying job. 00:03:40.68\00:03:43.32 And others have something else 00:03:43.35\00:03:44.69 standing in the way of opportunity. 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.39 So Judith tries to give them practical skills, 00:03:47.42\00:03:50.06 to get them back on their feet. 00:03:50.09\00:03:52.86 After the classroom discussion, 00:03:52.89\00:03:54.53 the lesson transitions outside for another practical exercise. 00:03:54.56\00:03:58.37 Today, the group is learning how to make their own soap. 00:03:58.40\00:04:02.00 They go through the process from start to finish. 00:04:02.04\00:04:04.87 It takes a few hours to go through each step, 00:04:04.91\00:04:07.38 but they enjoy every minute together. 00:04:07.41\00:04:09.64 They are taught the ingredients, 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.31 how to properly combine and heat the mixture, 00:04:11.35\00:04:14.22 and how long to let it cool. 00:04:14.25\00:04:15.65 In the end, 00:04:25.19\00:04:26.53 they are left with fresh smelling, 00:04:26.56\00:04:28.06 high quality soap. 00:04:28.10\00:04:30.47 This is a valuable skill for the group members. 00:04:30.50\00:04:33.57 They can take what they have learned 00:04:33.60\00:04:34.94 and sell the soap to earn an income 00:04:34.97\00:04:36.67 to support their families. 00:04:36.71\00:04:38.21 It's just one way they can advance their lives 00:04:38.24\00:04:40.48 and take care of their families. 00:04:40.51\00:04:43.08 It's a long process and it's only by God's grace, 00:04:43.11\00:04:46.88 I'll be able to help them, yeah. 00:04:46.92\00:04:49.85 So I am just counting on God's grace, 00:04:49.88\00:04:52.89 and doing what I can to help. 00:04:52.92\00:04:55.72 Judith takes pride in the part she plays in their success. 00:04:55.76\00:04:59.06 She has a passion to help the people of Papua New Guinea. 00:04:59.09\00:05:02.13 She has a heart for mission 00:05:02.16\00:05:03.80 and specifically children's ministry. 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.50 On this Sabbath, 00:05:06.53\00:05:07.87 Judith is visiting a church in the foothills. 00:05:07.90\00:05:10.17 She speaks to the children and tells them stories. 00:05:10.21\00:05:13.11 She wants them to know that Jesus cares about them, 00:05:13.14\00:05:15.78 and so does she. 00:05:15.81\00:05:17.41 Unfortunately, many children from the community 00:05:17.45\00:05:20.52 are abused. 00:05:20.55\00:05:21.88 Judith wants to instill encouraging words 00:05:21.92\00:05:24.45 that the children from church 00:05:24.49\00:05:26.02 can share with other students at school 00:05:26.05\00:05:28.19 and in their neighborhoods. 00:05:28.22\00:05:29.82 She educates parents by sharing good parenting tips with them. 00:05:29.86\00:05:33.93 So, yes, one thing I would ask the world church to do 00:05:33.96\00:05:36.67 is to pray for the kids, 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.53 who are suffering from all forms of abuse 00:05:38.57\00:05:41.50 and negligence and some of them 00:05:41.54\00:05:43.71 are not intentionally done by parents, 00:05:43.74\00:05:46.14 you know, 00:05:46.17\00:05:47.51 basically because they've been brought up in that way, 00:05:47.54\00:05:50.25 they think that this is the right way of parenting. 00:05:50.28\00:05:54.92 And so in the mind of, you know, good parent 00:05:54.95\00:05:58.49 what he or she may be doing like as spanking a child, 00:05:58.52\00:06:01.76 for them it's okay, that's normal, 00:06:01.79\00:06:04.49 because of their own upbringing. 00:06:04.53\00:06:07.36 The church in Papua New Guinea 00:06:07.40\00:06:08.90 is filled with children who love the Lord 00:06:08.93\00:06:11.03 and want to do his will. 00:06:11.07\00:06:12.93 Many times there is not enough room 00:06:12.97\00:06:14.87 in the churches for everyone. 00:06:14.90\00:06:16.91 This quarter, a portion of your mission offerings 00:06:16.94\00:06:19.61 will go towards building lamp shelters, 00:06:19.64\00:06:22.04 where the children can worship 00:06:22.08\00:06:23.41 and have a place for themselves. 00:06:23.45\00:06:25.51 They need a safe place to bring their friends 00:06:25.55\00:06:27.78 who may not know about Jesus. 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.92 Please continue to support this offering 00:06:29.95\00:06:32.12 to give hope to a young generation. 00:06:32.15\00:06:35.02 My guest is Pastor Arildo, 00:06:42.30\00:06:44.43 who cares for church planting, personal ministries 00:06:44.47\00:06:48.04 and many other things in this region of Brazil. 00:06:48.07\00:06:51.74 Thanks for joining us, Pastor. 00:06:51.77\00:06:53.38 Here in Manaus, 00:06:53.41\00:06:54.74 there are many different types of ministries, 00:06:54.78\00:06:56.81 can you explain 00:06:56.85\00:06:58.28 some of the various types of church plants there are? 00:06:58.31\00:07:02.95 Yes, Pastor, we have created some specific ministries, 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.85 that spring up from the necessity to reach 00:07:05.89\00:07:08.29 a variety of people groups, 00:07:08.32\00:07:09.99 who live here in Manaus, or at the Amazon region. 00:07:10.03\00:07:13.90 For example, we have worked with Haitians, 00:07:13.93\00:07:16.40 who arrived here as immigrants. 00:07:16.43\00:07:18.30 Adventist members are concerned about them, 00:07:18.33\00:07:20.10 so we developed work in Manaus, 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.10 and put a value for the Haitians. 00:07:22.14\00:07:24.94 We also established 00:07:24.97\00:07:26.31 English speaking churches to people 00:07:26.34\00:07:28.04 from a neighboring country to us, 00:07:28.08\00:07:29.74 the country of Guyana. 00:07:29.78\00:07:32.75 You'll find these churches in Boa Vista 00:07:32.78\00:07:35.02 and in the state of Roraima. 00:07:35.05\00:07:37.29 We have churches located to the post-modern mindset, 00:07:37.32\00:07:40.52 one of these is in Ponta Negra. 00:07:40.56\00:07:42.56 And the other was planted by our hospital, 00:07:42.59\00:07:44.99 the Seventh-day Adventist hospital in Manaus. 00:07:45.03\00:07:47.90 This groups of churches 00:07:47.93\00:07:49.26 aim to reach the affluent people of our city. 00:07:49.30\00:07:52.77 Another interesting outreach is the work 00:07:52.80\00:07:54.60 among the Jewish people, in our community. 00:07:54.64\00:07:57.41 There are large number of Jewish people in Manaus. 00:07:57.44\00:08:00.68 The name of their church or synagogue is Beth B'nei Tsion. 00:08:00.71\00:08:04.48 It's an Adventist Jewish synagogue. 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.82 Lastly, close by to where we are 00:08:06.85\00:08:09.62 is the church in the mall, 00:08:09.65\00:08:11.49 this mall is located in one of the most 00:08:11.52\00:08:13.62 rich neighborhoods of our town, 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.42 and this was the last neighborhood 00:08:15.46\00:08:16.89 with no Adventist presence. 00:08:16.93\00:08:19.43 So the organizers found the place 00:08:19.46\00:08:21.46 inside the mall like a store, to start a church plant, 00:08:21.50\00:08:24.73 with the goals to reach a lot of people for Jesus. 00:08:24.77\00:08:26.23 Wonderful. 00:08:26.27\00:08:27.60 Now, Pastor, you have a big urban cities like, 00:08:27.64\00:08:31.27 urban cities are all over. 00:08:31.31\00:08:32.91 You have cities like Manaus, 00:08:32.94\00:08:35.04 but you also have vast regions along the Amazon, 00:08:35.08\00:08:38.61 and I've heard about a floating church, 00:08:38.65\00:08:41.15 what is this? 00:08:41.18\00:08:42.52 The Amazon presents a unique challenge. 00:08:45.82\00:08:48.49 Here in Brazil, we have large footprint 00:08:48.52\00:08:51.26 of one of the least reached people groups in the world. 00:08:51.29\00:08:55.30 The first people group is the indigenous people. 00:08:55.33\00:08:58.13 And secondly, 00:08:58.17\00:08:59.50 the people who live along the Amazon River, 00:08:59.53\00:09:01.64 or as we know them riberenos, 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.14 meaning they're people who live beside the water. 00:09:04.17\00:09:06.81 We have about 10, 000 of these communities 00:09:06.84\00:09:08.84 of riberenos. 00:09:08.88\00:09:10.55 Many live in an area with no Protestant presence. 00:09:10.58\00:09:14.22 Either they will have a Catholic presence, 00:09:14.25\00:09:16.05 or no Christian presence whatsoever. 00:09:16.08\00:09:18.82 This naturally presents a great challenge to regions 00:09:18.85\00:09:21.36 of very difficult access. 00:09:21.39\00:09:24.09 On top of it, 00:09:24.13\00:09:25.46 many of these communities are closed in, 00:09:25.49\00:09:27.86 especially when they already have a predominant religion. 00:09:27.90\00:09:30.77 Then they simply shut themselves in, 00:09:30.80\00:09:33.23 so the floating church, 00:09:33.27\00:09:34.60 or church that navigates is a visionary project. 00:09:34.64\00:09:37.81 It will enable us to reach 00:09:37.84\00:09:39.17 the distant communities of the Amazon. 00:09:39.21\00:09:44.01 Okay. 00:09:44.05\00:09:45.38 Now, you are focused very much on church planting. 00:09:45.41\00:09:48.62 Why is church planting so important for mission? 00:09:48.65\00:09:52.19 Church planting for us it goes 00:09:52.22\00:09:53.99 hand in hand with fulfilling the great commission 00:09:54.02\00:09:56.73 to take the gospel to the whole world. 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.89 This is the best method, the best tool that we have. 00:09:58.93\00:10:02.76 We want to make disciples to plant new churches, 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.83 to equip and educate the members, 00:10:05.87\00:10:08.14 so they become disciples of Jesus. 00:10:08.17\00:10:10.24 Church planting is fundamental 00:10:10.27\00:10:12.24 and is very important to us here. 00:10:12.27\00:10:14.38 Now, can you tell me an experience of someone 00:10:14.41\00:10:17.31 whose life has been touched through ministry? 00:10:17.35\00:10:21.25 Recently, we had the privilege to witness a community 00:10:21.28\00:10:24.09 along the Amazon River, 00:10:24.12\00:10:25.59 that was reached by the gospel message. 00:10:25.62\00:10:28.32 This community is not far from here. 00:10:28.36\00:10:29.96 It's only about 100 miles away. 00:10:29.99\00:10:32.56 In this place we worked together with ADRA 00:10:32.59\00:10:35.16 offering humanitarian assistance. 00:10:35.20\00:10:37.13 We also worked with the Adventist church there 00:10:37.17\00:10:39.23 to support this village. 00:10:39.27\00:10:40.87 And in the end, 00:10:40.90\00:10:42.24 we were able to start a new congregation. 00:10:42.27\00:10:45.54 Now we see the people changing their habits, 00:10:45.57\00:10:47.74 changing their unhealthy customs, 00:10:47.78\00:10:49.34 and giving up their addictions. 00:10:49.38\00:10:51.11 The people are becoming more friendly there, 00:10:51.15\00:10:53.31 more loving, they are getting closer to one another. 00:10:53.35\00:10:56.42 We hear beautiful
