Welcome back to Manaus. 00:00:10.07\00:00:11.74 Next up, we travel to Rwanda 00:00:11.77\00:00:13.74 where Gina Wahlen hears a remarkable story 00:00:13.78\00:00:17.05 from a genocide survivor. 00:00:17.08\00:00:19.41 Today, we're on the beautiful campus 00:00:19.45\00:00:21.85 of the Adventist University of Central Africa in Rwanda 00:00:21.88\00:00:26.55 and I'm talking with Doctor Phodidas, 00:00:26.59\00:00:29.76 who is a professor in the Theology Department. 00:00:29.79\00:00:33.33 Now doctor, 00:00:33.36\00:00:34.70 today as we look around here on campus 00:00:34.73\00:00:37.63 and across Rwanda, it's beautiful, it's peaceful, 00:00:37.67\00:00:42.24 but as we know, it is not always been that way. 00:00:42.27\00:00:46.11 During the genocide you were here. 00:00:46.14\00:00:48.68 Could you tell us what it was like 00:00:48.71\00:00:50.65 during that time? 00:00:50.68\00:00:52.81 Well, it is very difficult to actually express 00:00:52.85\00:00:56.38 exactly what's happened during that time. 00:00:56.42\00:00:58.52 It was bad, 00:00:58.55\00:01:00.22 where you see thousands and thousands of people 00:01:00.26\00:01:03.22 being killed in the churches, in the stadium. 00:01:03.26\00:01:07.76 More than million of people were killed in only 100 days. 00:01:07.80\00:01:13.10 One million people in only 100 days. 00:01:13.13\00:01:16.77 Now during that time, 00:01:16.81\00:01:18.57 did you lose any family members? 00:01:18.61\00:01:21.21 Yeah of course I... 00:01:21.24\00:01:22.68 We were about eight children in my family, 00:01:22.71\00:01:25.98 and parents and six of them were killed 00:01:26.01\00:01:30.89 and all of them had children and even grandchildren. 00:01:30.92\00:01:35.19 I mean we had grandchildren in my family 00:01:35.22\00:01:37.13 and all of them were about 34, 00:01:37.16\00:01:40.00 from my mother's family, all of them were killed. 00:01:40.03\00:01:45.90 All of them. 00:01:45.93\00:01:47.70 And even you, 00:01:47.74\00:01:49.10 I understand faced death many times. 00:01:49.14\00:01:52.71 And in fact in your story, 00:01:52.74\00:01:54.28 there's point where you are digging 00:01:54.31\00:01:56.61 your own grave. 00:01:56.64\00:01:58.51 Can you tell us what that was like? 00:01:58.55\00:02:00.58 What was happening? 00:02:00.62\00:02:01.95 What was going through your mind? 00:02:01.98\00:02:04.89 Well... 00:02:04.92\00:02:06.82 it is very hard to express, but God is so good. 00:02:06.86\00:02:10.36 When you know Him, 00:02:10.39\00:02:11.73 He gives you the courage to face even moments like that. 00:02:11.76\00:02:15.83 So when I was.. 00:02:15.86\00:02:17.43 caught in a bush, it was around 11 A.M 00:02:17.47\00:02:20.64 and they asked me to go and dig the grave, 00:02:20.67\00:02:22.57 because they said, you look strong, 00:02:22.60\00:02:24.64 we don't dig the grave for you, 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.37 you better dig, then we kill you after. 00:02:26.41\00:02:29.74 And so I was going to dig, there was no other choice, 00:02:29.78\00:02:32.95 I dug, I started digging, 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.22 but at the same time I was praying, 00:02:35.25\00:02:37.02 I was saying, Lord, I know you are able to help me. 00:02:37.05\00:02:41.02 And I said, you know, 00:02:41.06\00:02:42.39 I had started preaching at the age of maybe 20 00:02:42.42\00:02:46.03 and I was a church elder in one of the biggest churches 00:02:46.06\00:02:49.20 in Kigali called. Remera. 00:02:49.23\00:02:51.53 And so, I said, Lord, I've preached about Daniel, 00:02:51.57\00:02:54.44 I've preached about Shadrach and Meshach and Abednego. 00:02:54.47\00:02:58.21 And I know, you can do the same today, 00:02:58.24\00:03:00.21 you can save my life. 00:03:00.24\00:03:02.01 And so I prayed 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.38 and the Lord answered my prayer. 00:03:03.41\00:03:05.75 Now, well, it's a long story but I was saying, 00:03:05.78\00:03:08.68 Lord, you save me, you give me wings, 00:03:08.72\00:03:11.09 I will fly from this place, but there were no wings. 00:03:11.12\00:03:14.86 And I prayed for the fire to come, or the thunder 00:03:14.89\00:03:18.23 so that people would just be scattered. 00:03:18.26\00:03:20.60 But there was no thunder. 00:03:20.63\00:03:22.73 But God has His own ways of answering prayers 00:03:22.76\00:03:25.53 and He answered my prayer. 00:03:25.57\00:03:27.40 I thank the Lord for that. 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.24 How did He answer your prayer? 00:03:29.27\00:03:32.71 Well, one of the killers had my Bible. 00:03:32.74\00:03:36.24 The Bible I had, wherever I was, 00:03:36.28\00:03:38.48 I used it as a pillow, 00:03:38.51\00:03:39.91 I put it into a plastic bag in the bush, 00:03:39.95\00:03:43.52 I could read it everyday. 00:03:43.55\00:03:46.19 And so I-- 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.56 one of the killers had it just on the top of the grave 00:03:47.59\00:03:51.69 and he was reading and interestingly, 00:03:51.73\00:03:54.23 he was only looking at the highlighted verses 00:03:54.26\00:03:57.87 and so as he read, he was asking me, said, 00:03:57.90\00:04:01.60 "Why are these places different from others? 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.91 Why are they highlighted, underlined?" 00:04:03.94\00:04:06.17 I said, "These are my favorite passages." 00:04:06.21\00:04:08.84 And he couldn't understand, he kept reading, 00:04:08.88\00:04:11.01 he read those verses, 00:04:11.05\00:04:12.45 underlined verses and later on he said, 00:04:12.48\00:04:15.65 could you please give me this Bible 00:04:15.68\00:04:17.95 before you die. 00:04:17.99\00:04:19.32 I said, "Go ahead and take it." 00:04:19.35\00:04:21.02 But he said, others couldn't allow, 00:04:21.06\00:04:22.79 he said, "No, that is not his Bible, 00:04:22.82\00:04:24.53 it is our Bible. 00:04:24.56\00:04:26.33 You will pay it if you want to get it. 00:04:26.36\00:04:29.26 And so he said, 00:04:29.30\00:04:30.63 "No matter how much money you need, I'll pay it." 00:04:30.67\00:04:33.34 He obviously had been attached by the word of God. 00:04:33.37\00:04:37.34 And later on, 00:04:37.37\00:04:39.27 it is a long story but later on, 00:04:39.31\00:04:42.14 the very man, as he continued reading, 00:04:42.18\00:04:44.35 he was somehow attached 00:04:44.38\00:04:45.91 and he said to his colleagues, militia, he said, 00:04:45.95\00:04:49.55 "Could you please allow me to help him digging the grave." 00:04:49.58\00:04:52.62 And he dug the grave for me. 00:04:52.65\00:04:54.32 But I was, I wasn't comfortable with that, 00:04:54.36\00:04:56.66 because I was scared, I said the grave is finishing 00:04:56.69\00:04:59.33 and they're just going to bury me, to kill me. 00:04:59.36\00:05:01.63 And so I prayed and prayed 00:05:01.66\00:05:03.70 and but God answered the prayer in a different way 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.84 and so, well, 00:05:06.87\00:05:08.37 they used that grave to bury somebody else. 00:05:08.40\00:05:11.07 They said, "No, we're not going to use it 00:05:11.11\00:05:12.67 to bury this strange man. 00:05:12.71\00:05:14.64 We're burying someone else we know from this village." 00:05:14.68\00:05:17.58 Because I was of a different village 00:05:17.61\00:05:19.85 and they said a prayer, 00:05:19.88\00:05:22.68 which actually I wasn't comfortable with. 00:05:22.72\00:05:25.55 Because they were saying Mary, mother of Jesus, we save him 00:05:25.59\00:05:29.32 and it was ironically, so I felt, 00:05:29.36\00:05:31.73 I have to say something as an Adventist and I said, 00:05:31.76\00:05:35.53 these people have never been instructed, 00:05:35.56\00:05:37.60 they have never known God. 00:05:37.63\00:05:39.07 I must tell them who God is 00:05:39.10\00:05:40.80 and what is the truth about the dead. 00:05:40.84\00:05:43.77 So that they themselves don't expect to be prayed 00:05:43.81\00:05:47.11 for once they're dead. 00:05:47.14\00:05:48.74 And so I said, Lord, 00:05:48.78\00:05:50.35 please don't allow me to fly away, 00:05:50.38\00:05:53.31 don't work out any miracle before I say it 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.12 something to this people. 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.69 I preached to them by God's grace, 00:05:58.72\00:06:00.76 and they repented, 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.12 and they were even hiding me for about two days, 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.06 they gave me their food and so on. 00:06:05.09\00:06:07.66 It's a beautiful testimony you have doctor. 00:06:07.70\00:06:10.97 Just in closing, 00:06:11.00\00:06:12.73 what would you say to a person, 00:06:12.77\00:06:15.10 who may be watching this right now, 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.34 who has experienced trauma, 00:06:17.37\00:06:19.51 or something very difficult in their lives 00:06:19.54\00:06:22.38 and they're having a hard time 00:06:22.41\00:06:24.48 forgiving those who have hurt them. 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.12 What would you say to that person? 00:06:27.15\00:06:30.59 It is beautiful to know Jesus and it is really good, 00:06:30.62\00:06:34.79 "cause when you know Jesus, 00:06:34.82\00:06:36.66 you won't just get traumatized. 00:06:36.69\00:06:39.46 I know what I'm saying. 00:06:39.49\00:06:40.83 There are people who may not understand 00:06:40.86\00:06:42.36 exactly what I'm saying, 00:06:42.40\00:06:43.80 but when you've had 00:06:43.83\00:06:45.17 a personal experience with Jesus, 00:06:45.20\00:06:47.74 He makes you busy with Him, 00:06:47.77\00:06:50.31 even when you have gone through all that, 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.57 because having lost every one at a very young age 00:06:52.61\00:06:56.14 and not knowing, because I was thinking, 00:06:56.18\00:06:58.48 if I go to school, what is it going to be for. 00:06:58.51\00:07:02.15 If I get a better life, 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.02 who is going to see that. 00:07:04.05\00:07:05.65 All these questions were coming to mind, 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.69 but again I was busy. 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.06 As I said, I was church elder at the age of 24, 00:07:09.09\00:07:11.86 and I was preaching everywhere, 00:07:11.89\00:07:13.80 conducting evangelistic campaign and I felt, 00:07:13.83\00:07:17.23 I found myself taking care of others 00:07:17.27\00:07:19.63 and caring for others, praying for them 00:07:19.67\00:07:22.30 and I felt, there was no room for me 00:07:22.34\00:07:24.21 to feel like I was desperate. 00:07:24.24\00:07:26.88 God is so good. 00:07:26.91\00:07:28.24 Actually, in fact, 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.61 I felt, I had to respond to other people's problems 00:07:29.64\00:07:32.58 and needs and up to now, the Lord has blessed it. 00:07:32.61\00:07:36.38 Thank you so much for sharing your story 00:07:36.42\00:07:38.85 with us today, pastor. 00:07:38.89\00:07:40.22 Thank you so much. Thank you. 00:07:40.26\00:07:41.59 Very inspiring. 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.73 Next up, we continue our journey 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.49 back through the time 00:07:45.53\00:07:46.96 as we look at the mission history 00:07:47.00\00:07:48.80 of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:07:48.83\00:07:51.33 The first thing you think of when I say NASA 00:07:51.37\00:07:53.64 is probably the moon landing. 00:07:53.67\00:07:56.00 It was truly incredible. 00:07:56.04\00:07:58.44 Only 12 people in the history have ever bounced 00:07:58.47\00:08:01.01 across the lunar surface. 00:08:01.04\00:08:03.31 But as impressive as that is, 00:08:03.35\00:08:05.38 NASA has a sight set on loftier goals, Mars. 00:08:05.41\00:08:10.72 And if putting a human on the moon was hard, 00:08:10.75\00:08:12.92 putting one on Mars is crazy. 00:08:12.95\00:08:15.96 The history of reaching the red planet 00:08:15.99\00:08:17.63 read something like this. 00:08:17.66\00:08:19.79 Spacecraft did not reach earth orbit. 00:08:19.83\00:08:22.80 Spacecraft's radio failed. 00:08:22.83\00:08:25.50 Spacecraft at the top of the rocket 00:08:25.53\00:08:27.24 failed to jettison. 00:08:27.27\00:08:29.04 Orbiter failed during launch. 00:08:29.07\00:08:31.24 Orbiter flew past the planet. 00:08:31.27\00:08:33.84 Lander failed due to fast impact. 00:08:33.88\00:08:36.88 Flyby Module and Lander arrived, 00:08:36.91\00:08:38.81 but Lander missed the planet. 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.42 Is this picture clear? 00:08:41.45\00:08:43.55 Just getting to Mars is problematic. 00:08:43.59\00:08:46.62 Earth and Mars orbit the sun at different speeds. 00:08:46.65\00:08:49.92 That means the two planets are constantly drifting apart 00:08:49.96\00:08:52.66 or getting closer together. 00:08:52.69\00:08:55.10 If they launch when Mars is closed, 00:08:55.13\00:08:57.00 the trip could take as little as six months. 00:08:57.03\00:09:00.10 If they launch when Mars is furthest away, 00:09:00.14\00:09:02.67 add a year to the travel time. 00:09:02.70\00:09:05.01 And if they miss, 00:09:05.04\00:09:06.41 it's not like they can set up another rocket 00:09:06.44\00:09:08.24 to try again right away. 00:09:08.28\00:09:10.31 The cycle between launch opportunities 00:09:10.35\00:09:12.31 is close to year and half. 00:09:12.35\00:09:14.32 The journey itself is arduous. 00:09:16.08\00:09:18.45 The living space is crammed. 00:09:18.49\00:09:20.66 Bathing with water is impossible. 00:09:20.69\00:09:22.99 Showers happen with moist towelettes. 00:09:23.02\00:09:25.79 All food must be canned or freeze dried. 00:09:25.83\00:09:28.43 Microgravity deteriorates muscle and bone. 00:09:28.46\00:09:31.67 And if a solar storm hits, 00:09:31.70\00:09:33.30 astronauts must retreat 00:09:33.34\00:09:34.67 to even tinnier protected areas of the craft. 00:09:34.70\00:09:38.21 Assuming launch, flight and landing are successful. 00:09:38.24\00:09:41.74 All Mars astronauts will also become farmers 00:09:41.78\00:09:44.21 on a freezing oxygen less planet. 00:09:44.25\00:09:47.12 They will plant, cultivate, harvest, cook 00:09:47.15\00:09:50.12 and compost indoors to have food rashes. 00:09:50.15\00:09:53.62 They must continue a self-sustaining existence 00:09:53.66\00:09:55.82 for somewhere in the ballpark of two and half years. 00:09:55.86\00:09:59.69 That's the minimum amount of time 00:09:59.73\00:10:01.26 they'll spend all alone, 00:10:01.30\00:10:02.96 removed from their friends and family 00:10:03.00\00:10:05.03 before they can come back. 00:10:05.07\00:10:07.00 And why? 00:10:07.04\00:10:08.37 Because they believe it's important. 00:10:08.40\00:10:11.17 Important enough to take the risk, 00:10:11.21\00:10:13.54 to make the sacrifice. 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.44 When I say steamship, 00:10:18.68\00:10:20.02 you probably think of a Titanic. 00:10:20.05\00:10:22.28 And you're either thinking of very terrible tragedy 00:10:22.32\00:10:25.05 or a very long movie. 00:10:25.09\00:10:27.32 Either way, passengers tell us that the only thing worse 00:10:27.36\00:10:30.29 than swimming for your life from a sinking steam ship 00:10:30.33\00:10:32.89 is having to live on board one. 00:10:32.93\00:10:35.96 On Christmas Eve, 1901 Jacob Nelson Anderson 00:10:36.00\00:10:39.73 led the first three commission Adventist missionaries 00:10:39.77\00:10:42.37 to China. 00:10:42.40\00:10:44.87 With their four year son Stanley, 00:10:44.91\00:10:46.98 he left their home in Wisconsin 00:10:47.01\00:10:48.41 and traveled by train to San Francisco. 00:10:48.44\00:10:51.48 From there they boarded a steamship 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.28 bound for Hong Kong. 00:10:53.31\00:10:55.18 This was 10 years before anyone would dare 00:10:55.22\00:10:57.39 to claim a steamship could be unsinkable. 00:10:57.42\00:11:00.19 At the time everyone carried 00:11:00.22\00:11:02.09 living memory of tragedies like the Independence 00:11:02.12\00:11:04.56 which crashed into a reef of the Northern California coast, 00:11:04.59\00:11:08.33 losing 150 passengers and crew. 00:11:08.36\00:11:12.53 If our missionaries traveled in the steerage deck, 00:11:12.57\00:11:15.10 then they were packed in like cattle with the cargo. 00:11:15.14\00:11:18.21 When the miserable food 00:11:18.24\00:11:19.57 was dealt out of huge kettles into dinner plates, 00:11:19.61\00:11:22.08 the strong would shove and bony. 00:11:22.11\00:11:24.81 Two to four hundred might sleep in the same room on bunks. 00:11:24.85\00:11:28.52 Privacy was impossible. 00:11:28.55\00:11:30.59 Available restrooms often equated to pots and pans. 00:11:30.62\00:11:34.12 Unsanitary conditions frequently lead to death. 00:11:34.16\00:11:37.56 Did you catch that? 00:11:37.59\00:11:39.19 Just being on a steam should kill you. 00:11:39.23\00:11:42.03 No icebergs necessary. 00:11:42.06\00:11:44.63 And the trip takes a minimum of three weeks. 00:11:44.67\00:11:48.17 Upon arrival J.N Anderson's escort 00:11:48.20\00:11:50.84 fail to meet the missionary team. 00:11:50.87\00:11:53.01 Stranded and exhausted, 00:11:53.04\00:11:54.74 they immediately realized they had another challenge, 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.55 communication. 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.28 Mandarin doesn't use the western alphabet, 00:11:59.31\00:12:01.55 but unique characters for every word. 00:12:01.58\00:12:04.22 Its grammar doesn't come from verb tenses 00:12:04.25\00:12:06.55 but from tonal inflection. 00:12:06.59\00:12:09.19 Standing there with bags in hand, 00:12:09.22\00:12:11.46 our missionaries probably felt a lot like astronauts 00:12:11.49\00:12:13.96 setting foot on Mars. 00:12:14.00\00:12:16.46 But they believe that work was important enough 00:12:16.50\00:12:18.63 to take the risk, to make the sacrifice. 00:12:18.67\00:12:23.17 J. N Anderson's diary records him as a man 00:12:23.20\00:12:25.71 with a rich heart for the land and its people. 00:12:25.74\00:12:29.18 He and the others were committed. 00:12:29.21\00:12:31.71 The first task was to learn the language. 00:12:31.75\00:12:34.05 It took two years. 00:12:34.08\00:12:36.38 The next task was getting from Hong Kong 00:12:36.42\00:12:38.42 to mainland China. 00:12:38.45\00:12:40.02 This only proved possible 00:12:40.06\00:12:41.39 because of the efforts of other missionaries, 00:12:41.42\00:12:43.32 both official and unofficial. 00:12:43.36\00:12:45.86 J.N Anderson met his neighbors, shopped at local markets 00:12:45.89\00:12:49.26 and shared his faith On Valentine's Day, 1903 00:12:49.30\00:12:53.20 Anderson baptized six Chinese converts 00:12:53.23\00:12:55.94 to Adventism, 00:12:55.97\00:12:57.57 that's how the church started in China, six people. 00:12:57.61\00:13:02.48 Anderson's appeals to the General Conference 00:13:02.51\00:13:04.51 scored four doctors and two nurses, 00:13:04.55\00:13:07.05 the beginning of Adventist medical missionary 00:13:07.08\00:13:09.02 work in China. 00:13:09.05\00:13:10.62 A Chinese church headquarters were established. 00:13:10.65\00:13:13.79 Anderson sister-in-law formed the first Adventist school. 00:13:13.82\00:13:17.89 Anderson's younger brother was so inspired 00:13:17.93\00:13:19.79 that he made the steamship journey out 00:13:19.83\00:13:21.90 and joined the efforts, 00:13:21.93\00:13:23.97 In the spring of 1906 00:13:24.00\00:13:25.63 J.N Anderson passed the torch to Nga Pit Keh, 00:13:25.67\00:13:29.10 ordaining him as the first Chinese minister 00:13:29.14\00:13:31.54 in the SDA Church. 00:13:31.57\00:13:33.61 This one action opened the door 00:13:33.64\00:13:35.38 for dozens of others Chinese church members 00:13:35.41\00:13:37.58 to join in spreading the good news. 00:13:37.61\00:13:40.38 Today in China there are over 400,000 Adventist believers 00:13:40.42\00:13:45.25 and 4571 congregations. 00:13:45.29\00:13:49.86 Well, thanks for joining us on today's program. 00:13:49.89\00:13:52.33 I hope that you have been inspired and challenged 00:13:52.36\00:13:54.73 by what you've seen and heard about mission around the world. 00:13:54.76\00:13:59.50 You know, in Europe, in Africa, 00:13:59.53\00:14:01.94 right here in Brazil, 00:14:01.97\00:14:03.57 there're still many mission challenges. 00:14:03.61\00:14:05.87 They seemed to be many obstacles, 00:14:05.91\00:14:07.81 but there're still many opportunities. 00:14:07.84\00:14:09.34 And I want to thank you for your continuing prayerful 00:14:09.38\00:14:12.38 and financial support for mission. 00:14:12.41\00:14:14.88 It does make a difference. 00:14:14.92\00:14:17.12 And around the world, 00:14:17.15\00:14:18.49 global mission pioneers are planting churches, 00:14:18.52\00:14:20.36 and it's so encouraging for them to know 00:14:20.39\00:14:22.76 that there is a world church praying for them. 00:14:22.79\00:14:25.63 Before we go, I'd like to give you a special offer. 00:14:25.66\00:14:28.86 It's actually a book that I wrote some years ago 00:14:28.90\00:14:30.97 called God's Great Missionaries. 00:14:31.00\00:14:33.74 And it's full of stories, 00:14:33.77\00:14:35.10 not only of Bible missionaries 00:14:35.14\00:14:36.94 but also people today 00:14:36.97\00:14:38.67 who're putting Christ's love into action 00:14:38.71\00:14:41.81 around the world. 00:14:41.84\00:14:43.18 Well, that's it for today's program. 00:14:43.21\00:14:44.65 For Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:14:44.68\00:14:47.08 And I hope you can join me next time 00:14:47.12\00:14:48.88 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:14:48.92\00:14:51.35
