The country of India, 00:00:10.21\00:00:11.74 the first official Seventh-day Adventist missionary 00:00:11.77\00:00:15.34 and mission on the mightiest river system in the world, 00:00:15.38\00:00:18.78 coming up next. 00:00:18.81\00:00:20.15 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:23.75\00:00:26.32 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:26.35\00:00:29.32 He gave us a mission. 00:00:29.36\00:00:31.96 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world 00:00:31.99\00:00:36.80 telling them of His love." 00:00:36.83\00:00:39.33 This is our mission. 00:00:39.37\00:00:41.34 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:41.37\00:00:43.27 Hello, and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:49.38\00:00:52.01 Coming today from the city of Manaus. 00:00:52.05\00:00:54.68 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.05 Manaus is a large city 00:00:56.08\00:00:57.75 and it's the gateway to the Amazon. 00:00:57.79\00:01:00.42 But when you're in the middle of the city 00:01:00.46\00:01:02.42 surrounded by tall buildings, 00:01:02.46\00:01:03.93 you don't realize that how isolated this city is. 00:01:03.96\00:01:07.53 It's surrounded by jungle. 00:01:07.56\00:01:09.43 In fact, the only way to get here 00:01:09.46\00:01:11.07 is either by plane or by boat 00:01:11.10\00:01:13.74 or if you're adventurous by four wheel drive. 00:01:13.77\00:01:17.44 This is actually the Negro river 00:01:17.47\00:01:20.04 and bit further up river, 00:01:20.08\00:01:21.98 it joins with the Solimoes river, 00:01:22.01\00:01:24.95 and those convergence of waters are very photographed, 00:01:24.98\00:01:28.32 because you see the actual colors change in the water 00:01:28.35\00:01:31.89 and then they become the Amazon river, 00:01:31.92\00:01:33.82 the mighty Amazon river. 00:01:33.86\00:01:35.66 And on today's program, we will look at the first, 00:01:35.69\00:01:39.43 or one of the first pioneer missionaries 00:01:39.46\00:01:41.66 who braved the water of the Amazon. 00:01:41.70\00:01:44.87 But first up, we're going to meet 00:01:44.90\00:01:46.67 the first Seventh-day Adventist missionary ever send 00:01:46.70\00:01:51.17 and it was to the country of Switzerland. 00:01:51.21\00:01:53.78 William Ambrose Spicer wasn't born Seventh-day Adventist, 00:01:53.81\00:01:57.25 but he converted around 14 years old 00:01:57.28\00:01:59.18 after attending revival meetings and reading 00:01:59.21\00:02:00.92 The Great Controversy. 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.52 When he was only 16, 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.25 he had to dropout of high school 00:02:04.29\00:02:05.62 to care for his father, 00:02:05.65\00:02:06.99 who had recently endured a stroke. 00:02:07.02\00:02:08.62 Spicer needed a job 00:02:08.66\00:02:09.99 and he found one at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. 00:02:10.03\00:02:13.13 Young William worked all day 00:02:13.16\00:02:14.50 and took secretarial courses by night. 00:02:14.53\00:02:17.90 At 22, he moved to England 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.60 when former conference president 00:02:19.63\00:02:20.97 Stephen Haskell offered him a job. 00:02:21.00\00:02:23.41 Haskell was a missionary to England, 00:02:23.44\00:02:26.11 but interestingly England was sending navies, 00:02:26.14\00:02:29.24 merchants, scientists and others to the far reaches 00:02:29.28\00:02:31.88 of Africa and India. 00:02:31.91\00:02:33.88 Around the world, 00:02:33.92\00:02:35.25 Western colonialism was spreading. 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.89 Powerful countries were driven by economic and political gain, 00:02:38.92\00:02:42.49 etheric center believes about race superiority 00:02:42.52\00:02:45.19 and the thrill of exploration. 00:02:45.23\00:02:47.93 The motivation to colonized distant lands 00:02:47.96\00:02:49.83 even got mixed up with religion. 00:02:49.86\00:02:52.27 And though the reasons for missions 00:02:52.30\00:02:53.64 were muddied by some, 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.20 it's undeniable that colonialism 00:02:55.24\00:02:57.14 helped to lay the groundwork for honest 00:02:57.17\00:02:59.11 Christ centric missionaries to reach out in love. 00:02:59.14\00:03:02.01 At this point Seventh-day Adventist mission 00:03:08.25\00:03:10.19 was like a base jumper at the edge of a precipice, 00:03:10.22\00:03:13.32 so much potential ready at any second, 00:03:13.36\00:03:16.79 like a toddler learning to walk, 00:03:16.83\00:03:19.13 like a handful of Lycopodium powder 00:03:19.16\00:03:21.06 sitting next to candle, 00:03:21.10\00:03:22.90 waiting to get shaken up, primed to ignite 00:03:22.93\00:03:27.27 and William Spicer was the breeze to do it. 00:03:27.30\00:03:31.57 The Spicer wind began to blow in 1892 00:03:31.61\00:03:34.14 when he was named secretary 00:03:34.18\00:03:35.51 of the newly minted Foreign Missions Board. 00:03:35.54\00:03:37.98 Only one year later, an African prime minister 00:03:38.01\00:03:40.35 donated 12,000 acres of farmland 00:03:40.38\00:03:42.48 to the Adventist church. 00:03:42.52\00:03:43.95 This allowed Spicer to establish 00:03:43.99\00:03:45.59 the Solusi mission in Zimbabwe, 00:03:45.62\00:03:47.62 the first of hundreds of African missions. 00:03:47.66\00:03:51.19 In 1898, Spicer received two notices. 00:03:51.23\00:03:54.66 The first calls for missionary to Africa, 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.27 the second to India. 00:03:57.30\00:03:59.33 After prayer and a family meeting, 00:03:59.37\00:04:01.24 Spicer accepts the call to India. 00:04:01.27\00:04:03.30 He becomes a missionary 00:04:03.34\00:04:04.67 and editor of the first American periodical in India, 00:04:04.71\00:04:08.11 Oriental Watchman. 00:04:08.14\00:04:09.48 But Spicer didn't erupt into a gale force 00:04:09.51\00:04:11.75 until after he returned to the United States 00:04:11.78\00:04:13.78 several years later. 00:04:13.82\00:04:15.35 He would serve A.G. Daniells as secretary 00:04:15.38\00:04:17.59 during Daniells' term as conference president 00:04:17.62\00:04:20.49 and then Daniells would return the favor 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.39 once Spicer became president. 00:04:22.42\00:04:24.36 Together these two lead the church 00:04:24.39\00:04:25.99 for the first 30 years of the 20th century 00:04:26.03\00:04:28.80 and they would do for Adventist missions, 00:04:28.83\00:04:30.60 what Henry Ford did for the automobile industry. 00:04:30.63\00:04:33.77 Ford was visiting a meat packing plan, 00:04:33.80\00:04:35.64 when he realized that all the workers stood still 00:04:35.67\00:04:37.77 while the product came to them, why not do the same for cars? 00:04:37.81\00:04:41.94 Suddenly, the industrial assembly line was born, 00:04:41.98\00:04:45.11 infrastructure, groundwork. 00:04:45.15\00:04:47.72 Around the turn of the century, 00:04:47.75\00:04:49.08 it became clear that the church's top-down style 00:04:49.12\00:04:51.29 of government was failing. 00:04:51.32\00:04:52.92 While appropriate to a small localized church, 00:04:52.95\00:04:55.66 this method ceased to be effective as the church 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.86 stretched across continents and oceans. 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.66 A.G. Daniells suggested union conferences, 00:05:00.70\00:05:03.57 handing the responsibilities to locals on the ground 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.33 familiar with the specific needs of that region. 00:05:06.37\00:05:12.97 During the reign of western imperialism, 00:05:13.01\00:05:14.88 leaders like Teddy Roosevelt employed battleship diplomacy. 00:05:14.91\00:05:18.41 In the midst of a non-violent conflict, 00:05:18.45\00:05:20.85 one country's navy fleet would show up 00:05:20.88\00:05:22.58 on the other shores posturing all its power. 00:05:22.62\00:05:26.49 This showmanship was usually enough 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.12 to resolve the issue in favor of the team 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.39 with the biggest guns. 00:05:30.43\00:05:32.06 This mindset infected foreign missions 00:05:32.09\00:05:34.66 and Spicer knew it. 00:05:34.70\00:05:36.06 He raised the issue of American nationalism sank. 00:05:36.10\00:05:39.13 It does one no good to take along from America 00:05:39.17\00:05:41.60 a national feeling into the field. 00:05:41.64\00:05:44.07 Missionaries had to often erected 00:05:44.11\00:05:46.17 a barrier between himself and every soul 00:05:46.21\00:05:48.51 who is not an American. 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.65 William Spicer wrote at least eight books 00:05:50.68\00:05:52.75 and never owned a car, 00:05:52.78\00:05:54.12 he always traveled coach on trains 00:05:54.15\00:05:55.95 and we wouldn't buy anything he couldn't pay for in cash. 00:05:55.98\00:05:59.62 Our Adventist College in India is named for him. 00:05:59.65\00:06:02.46 Before Spicer in 1880, 00:06:02.49\00:06:04.29 the church had eight overseas missions. 00:06:04.33\00:06:06.86 In 1890 still only eight. 00:06:06.90\00:06:08.96 But by 1900 there were 42, then 87 in 1910, 00:06:09.00\00:06:14.24 153 in 1920 and in 1930 00:06:14.27\00:06:18.31 270 missions in over 50 countries. 00:06:18.34\00:06:21.61 That's three Adventist foreign missionaries 00:06:21.64\00:06:23.65 for every one employed state side. 00:06:23.68\00:06:26.58 Spicer stirred the air and like Lycopodium podium powder 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.95 exploded into flames. 00:06:28.98\00:06:31.35 The churches' membership was growing as numerous 00:06:31.39\00:06:33.66 as the stars. 00:06:33.69\00:06:35.62 I'm delighted to able to talk to Herber Kalbermatter 00:06:35.66\00:06:39.19 who is the regional director for the Adventist Development 00:06:39.23\00:06:42.13 and Relief Agency here in the Amazon region. 00:06:42.16\00:06:45.33 Thank so much for joining us today. 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.84 And I'm very interested to hear that the Luzerio boat 00:06:47.87\00:06:52.91 is still operating on the Amazon River. 00:06:52.94\00:06:55.11 Can you tell some of the history 00:06:55.14\00:06:57.21 of the Luzerio boat? 00:06:57.25\00:07:00.52 The history of the first Luzerio boat 00:07:00.55\00:07:02.85 begins with the arrival 00:07:02.88\00:07:04.25 of a pioneering family of missionaries. 00:07:04.29\00:07:07.26 They were Leo and Jessie Halliwell. 00:07:07.29\00:07:10.19 After deciding to design 00:07:10.23\00:07:11.93 and built the first Luzerio boat. 00:07:11.96\00:07:13.96 On 4th of July 1931, the Halliwell's launched it 00:07:14.00\00:07:19.03 and now they began to cruse the Amazon River. 00:07:19.07\00:07:22.07 They encountered many obstacles and challenges 00:07:22.10\00:07:24.61 as they navigate through the Amazon, 00:07:24.64\00:07:26.81 but they were highly motivated 00:07:26.84\00:07:28.78 and enthusiastic about this work. 00:07:28.81\00:07:30.95 They traveled from village to village serving the people 00:07:30.98\00:07:34.28 in a unique way through the health ministry. 00:07:34.32\00:07:37.92 These of course transformed lives. 00:07:37.95\00:07:40.72 Since then, 00:07:40.76\00:07:42.42 because of the Halliwell's example, 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.36 we also feel motivated to do the same work. 00:07:44.39\00:07:47.93 Today I have the privilege of directing 00:07:47.96\00:07:50.17 this legacy service that began some 85 years ago. 00:07:50.20\00:07:54.30 In essence, we do here the very work 00:07:54.34\00:07:57.61 that they begin with a lot of challenges back then. 00:07:57.64\00:08:01.14 We continue to work 00:08:01.18\00:08:02.51 with a countless communities along the Amazon River, 00:08:02.54\00:08:05.88 serving the people through health and healing. 00:08:05.91\00:08:09.22 This is how this important ministry began 00:08:09.25\00:08:12.29 here in the Amazon region. 00:08:12.32\00:08:14.29 So today the tradition continues 00:08:14.32\00:08:19.39 and the Luzerio boat travels doing what? 00:08:19.43\00:08:25.80 Today, we work from three operational centers. 00:08:25.83\00:08:29.07 We have stationed nurses on each of them 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.67 to provide emergency assistance. 00:08:31.71\00:08:33.78 We have also developed partnerships 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.84 with other institutions in much like in the past. 00:08:35.88\00:08:39.31 The modern Luzerio boats visit the villages, 00:08:39.35\00:08:42.52 bringing healing and attending the sick. 00:08:42.55\00:08:45.85 Many professionals come from all parts of the world. 00:08:45.89\00:08:49.16 They also come from nearby schools and hospitals. 00:08:49.19\00:08:52.76 Through the volunteered services 00:08:52.79\00:08:54.13 of these professionals, 00:08:54.16\00:08:55.50 we navigate to the riverside communities, 00:08:55.53\00:08:58.03 arriving at the people's front door to offer them 00:08:58.07\00:09:00.90 what they need the most. 00:09:00.94\00:09:03.07 If these doctors and nurses did not come, 00:09:03.10\00:09:05.91 the people here would have to brave the river waters 00:09:05.94\00:09:08.88 for some eight hours by boat 00:09:08.91\00:09:11.15 navigating before they could receive any medical attention. 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.88 The locals view these people 00:09:14.92\00:09:16.89 who come to serve as the white angels. 00:09:16.92\00:09:20.76 Now the Luzerio boat 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.69 has touched the lives of thousands of people. 00:09:22.72\00:09:25.99 Can you give an example of someone 00:09:26.03\00:09:28.63 who's been helped through this, through this work?
