Welcome back to New York City, 00:00:05.10\00:00:06.47 and next up we travel to a warmer part of the world, 00:00:06.50\00:00:09.70 Johannesburg, South Africa. 00:00:09.74\00:00:12.11 I'm talking with Global Mission pioneers, 00:00:12.14\00:00:14.54 Elder and Mrs. Sibanda 00:00:14.58\00:00:16.44 at the Berea International Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:16.48\00:00:19.31 in Pretoria, South Africa. 00:00:19.35\00:00:21.75 Mrs. Sibanda, how long have you 00:00:21.78\00:00:23.75 and your husband been Global Mission pioneers? 00:00:23.79\00:00:27.12 We have been doing global Pioneer Mission work 00:00:27.16\00:00:29.99 for 11 years now. 00:00:30.03\00:00:31.59 Wow, that's a long time, yes. Yes. 00:00:31.63\00:00:35.53 Elder Sibanda, I understand 00:00:35.56\00:00:37.27 that about a year after being Global Mission pioneers, 00:00:37.30\00:00:41.90 you experienced something very unfortunate. 00:00:41.94\00:00:44.71 Tell me a little bit about that. 00:00:44.74\00:00:46.64 Yes, the devil works in some subversive manner. 00:00:46.68\00:00:52.78 I got arrested 00:00:52.81\00:00:55.88 and I was sent to prison 00:00:55.92\00:01:02.02 on a remand. 00:01:02.06\00:01:05.19 And for five months, 00:01:05.23\00:01:08.06 I was packed in there. 00:01:08.10\00:01:12.33 There was no case because they did not have... 00:01:12.37\00:01:17.51 Actually they did not have any docket... 00:01:17.54\00:01:22.74 There was no charge made. 00:01:22.78\00:01:24.11 There was no charge which they had prepared. 00:01:24.15\00:01:28.28 Every time I would go to court, they would tell me, 00:01:28.32\00:01:32.09 the case has been remanded to next week. 00:01:32.12\00:01:34.62 The case has been remanded to next week. 00:01:34.66\00:01:37.96 And, meanwhile, there was no charge sheet. 00:01:37.99\00:01:42.66 And as I was in the prison, in many cases, 00:01:42.70\00:01:49.60 the prison authorities would actually send other people 00:01:49.64\00:01:54.34 who have come to prison with worse problems, 00:01:54.38\00:01:57.98 like murder, etc. 00:01:58.01\00:02:00.25 for me to counsel them whilst I was incarcerated. 00:02:00.28\00:02:05.65 Okay. 00:02:05.69\00:02:07.02 Yes, you see, as I was in prison, 00:02:07.06\00:02:09.59 there were quite a number of things 00:02:09.62\00:02:11.19 that were happening. 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.56 People that were worshipping on Sunday 00:02:13.60\00:02:15.73 sometimes they would call me to come 00:02:15.76\00:02:17.53 and preach to some of those prisoners, 00:02:17.57\00:02:22.04 you know, the inmates, because I was still 00:02:22.07\00:02:26.24 in the 'awaiting trial' section, 00:02:26.27\00:02:30.35 and when I was released, 00:02:30.38\00:02:36.79 because there was no charge, 00:02:36.82\00:02:40.52 I went back to prison the following Sabbath, 00:02:40.56\00:02:43.96 together with my wife, and from then on, 00:02:43.99\00:02:50.37 we started prison ministry in a much tenser manner. 00:02:50.40\00:02:56.60 Pretoria Central Prison 00:02:56.64\00:02:59.47 became the first prison in South Africa 00:02:59.51\00:03:02.98 to be installed of Hope Channel 00:03:03.01\00:03:08.45 through our ministry. 00:03:08.48\00:03:11.72 And we've already installed 00:03:11.75\00:03:13.66 about four of those units at one prison 00:03:13.69\00:03:19.03 but we are still negotiating to install more. 00:03:19.06\00:03:23.37 Tell me, what was that like for both of you? 00:03:23.40\00:03:26.17 You know, you had been in prison 00:03:26.20\00:03:28.24 for five or six months 00:03:28.27\00:03:31.37 and you, on the outside, worried and praying, 00:03:31.41\00:03:34.24 and to go back, to turn around and go back, 00:03:34.28\00:03:37.91 why did you do that? 00:03:37.95\00:03:39.28 Did you feel the Lord calling you 00:03:39.31\00:03:40.95 to be involved in this particular ministry? 00:03:40.98\00:03:43.02 Did he lay it on your heart? Did you want to do it? 00:03:43.05\00:03:46.69 You know, this incident that happened, 00:03:46.72\00:03:48.69 that my husband was incarcerated there, 00:03:48.72\00:03:51.56 it opened our eyes and our minds 00:03:51.59\00:03:53.80 that God wants to use us there. 00:03:53.83\00:03:56.63 So we felt the Lord wants to use us 00:03:56.67\00:04:00.64 because there was so much that we could see 00:04:00.67\00:04:04.57 that we can do help the guys there, 00:04:04.61\00:04:06.91 where some of them did not have a relationship with Christ, 00:04:06.94\00:04:10.31 they did not know Christ. 00:04:10.35\00:04:12.41 So we were encouraged that God wants to use us there. 00:04:12.45\00:04:17.62 Now, as a result of your ministry, 00:04:17.65\00:04:19.22 do you know of people who have come to know Christ? 00:04:19.25\00:04:21.82 Yes, there are quite a number that have come to know Christ. 00:04:21.86\00:04:24.96 Some of them, we have adopted them as our children. 00:04:24.99\00:04:30.57 And, in fact, 00:04:30.60\00:04:32.23 our ministry is not only concentrated to the inmates, 00:04:32.27\00:04:37.24 it is now spread over even to the officers themselves, 00:04:37.27\00:04:42.51 because the officers, 00:04:42.54\00:04:44.11 quite a number of these officers, 00:04:44.15\00:04:47.52 either they are stressed 00:04:47.55\00:04:50.42 and they need a lot of counseling. 00:04:50.45\00:04:53.19 Sometimes, you know, we would go there 00:04:53.22\00:04:55.22 and do the counseling instead of going to the prisoners. 00:04:55.26\00:04:58.89 We actually go to the officers themselves. 00:04:58.93\00:05:01.33 Elder Sibanda, I understand that you are the leader 00:05:01.36\00:05:04.17 of the Global Mission pioneer work in Pretoria, 00:05:04.20\00:05:08.04 and you mentioned that your wife goes to the prison 00:05:08.07\00:05:10.41 a couple days a week. 00:05:10.44\00:05:12.07 What else do you do? 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.44 What else is involved in your Global Mission ministry 00:05:13.48\00:05:15.18 at this point? 00:05:15.21\00:05:16.54 Well, in the Global Mission ministry, 00:05:16.58\00:05:18.61 there is quite a lot that is happening currently. 00:05:18.65\00:05:21.75 Pretoria, being a metropolitan area, 00:05:21.78\00:05:24.52 there's a lot of need for the work to be done, 00:05:24.55\00:05:31.36 so, sometimes, we do share. 00:05:31.39\00:05:34.16 When she is at the prison, I am on the front. 00:05:34.20\00:05:39.50 I've got three colleagues that I'm working with 00:05:39.53\00:05:43.74 within the city. 00:05:43.77\00:05:45.44 And we go out, knock doors, 00:05:45.47\00:05:48.54 not only that but we're also involved in, 00:05:48.58\00:05:55.28 arranging and conducting evangelistic meetings 00:05:55.32\00:05:59.12 within the city. 00:05:59.15\00:06:00.99 Well, there are quite a number of other congregations 00:06:01.02\00:06:04.76 that we have managed to pioneer. 00:06:04.79\00:06:08.86 One such congregation is a congregation 00:06:08.90\00:06:11.07 up in Johannesburg where it was a Pentecostal congregation 00:06:11.10\00:06:18.04 and we managed to share some truth with them 00:06:18.07\00:06:22.61 by God's grace, 00:06:22.64\00:06:23.98 the whole church plus the pastor 00:06:24.01\00:06:27.02 became Adventist 00:06:27.05\00:06:28.68 and the pastor himself, currently, 00:06:28.72\00:06:31.12 is training at St Lucia. 00:06:31.15\00:06:33.72 He's left with only a year to complete, 00:06:33.76\00:06:37.13 to come back into the ministry, 00:06:37.16\00:06:39.53 which actually was as a result of the Global Mission pioneer. 00:06:39.56\00:06:45.13 What is it that keeps you motivated, 00:06:45.17\00:06:47.77 keeps you in the ministry? 00:06:47.80\00:06:50.17 Well, I remember the words 00:06:50.21\00:06:53.88 of one of our division officers 00:06:53.91\00:06:59.81 who happened to be a young man 00:06:59.85\00:07:01.92 when I was already a trained pastor, 00:07:01.95\00:07:06.35 he said to me, "Listen, 00:07:06.39\00:07:08.36 when the finger of God is pointed at you, 00:07:08.39\00:07:12.33 it doesn't matter where you go, it doesn't matter what you do, 00:07:12.36\00:07:16.26 you will come back to do what he has asked you to do." 00:07:16.30\00:07:20.74 And Global Mission work, it's something that is inborn. 00:07:20.77\00:07:25.24 Something that is part of our lifestyle. 00:07:25.27\00:07:30.51 And it is very difficult to part with it. 00:07:30.55\00:07:33.88 And we enjoy doing it because we cannot just stop doing it 00:07:33.92\00:07:39.42 until he tells us to stop. 00:07:39.45\00:07:41.82 Hmm, very good. 00:07:41.86\00:07:43.79 Elder and Mrs. Sibanda, thank you for your time 00:07:43.83\00:07:46.03 and for your sharing a little bit of your life 00:07:46.06\00:07:48.16 as Global Mission pioneers here in Pretoria. 00:07:48.20\00:07:51.23 Well, you're welcome, you're welcome. 00:07:51.27\00:07:53.60 Historically, the Seventh-Day Adventist church 00:07:53.64\00:07:55.77 has been strongest in rural areas and on islands. 00:07:55.80\00:08:00.08 And we have neglected the great urban areas. 00:08:00.11\00:08:03.91 Not so long ago, I visited some of the cities 00:08:03.95\00:08:06.15 and I'd like to show you a video now that shows 00:08:06.18\00:08:08.75 some of the challenge that we are facing. 00:08:08.78\00:08:10.99 When many of us think of the mission field, 00:08:38.55\00:08:40.42 we still think in terms of small rural villages. 00:08:40.45\00:08:44.22 Now, villages are still important, 00:08:44.25\00:08:46.29 but increasingly, these are our mission fields, 00:08:46.32\00:08:49.92 the growing cities of the world 00:08:49.96\00:08:52.19 where millions and millions of people 00:08:52.23\00:08:53.56 are congregating. 00:08:53.60\00:08:54.93 They're not going anywhere soon, 00:08:54.96\00:08:56.30 except they're getting bigger and bigger, and bigger. 00:08:56.33\00:08:58.63 As the people are walking these streets, 00:08:58.67\00:09:00.67 living in these apartments, working in these offices, 00:09:00.70\00:09:03.64 it's the people living in makeshift housing, 00:09:03.67\00:09:07.01 in hovels and slums. 00:09:07.04\00:09:09.64 It's the rich, it's the poor 00:09:09.68\00:09:11.35 who need to know Jesus Christ. 00:09:11.38\00:09:13.45 The growing urban areas of the world 00:09:13.48\00:09:15.28 are our greatest mission challenge, 00:09:15.32\00:09:18.22 but they're also our greatest mission opportunity. 00:09:18.25\00:09:20.79 Imagine that you were standing here with me 00:09:35.50\00:09:38.07 in the capital city of Myanmar, Yangon. 00:09:38.11\00:09:42.48 Right here in the heart of the city, 00:09:42.51\00:09:44.05 and then imagine that there was a circle around us 00:09:44.08\00:09:46.98 with a radius of 3,000 miles, 5,000 kilometers. 00:09:47.02\00:09:51.42 Now that's a relatively small space, 00:09:51.45\00:09:54.16 but in that area, 00:09:54.19\00:09:55.52 60 percent of the world's population lives. 00:09:55.56\00:09:58.43 And this is an area 00:09:58.46\00:09:59.79 where the poorest people of the world live 00:09:59.83\00:10:02.33 and representatives from the world's major religions 00:10:02.36\00:10:05.40 but the fewest Christians. 00:10:05.43\00:10:06.90 Adventist work began in the Middle East 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.79 right here in the ancient land of Egypt. 00:10:26.82\00:10:30.36 Back in the 1870s some people sent some literature. 00:10:30.39\00:10:33.96 Now, more than 100 years later, 140 years later, 00:10:34.00\00:10:38.27 the Adventist Church throughout the Middle East 00:10:38.30\00:10:40.40 is a minority of minorities. 00:10:40.44\00:10:43.00 In fact, if you could imagine a line of people 00:10:43.04\00:10:45.57 stretching here from Cairo, Egypt 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.94 directly all the way to Beirut, Lebanon, 00:10:47.98\00:10:50.45 nearly 600 kilometers, 00:10:50.48\00:10:52.58 and if each person were spaced just one meter apart, 00:10:52.61\00:10:56.48 you could walk that entire line 00:10:56.52\00:10:58.95 and you would meet only three or four Adventists. 00:10:58.99\00:11:02.72 In the face of numbers such as that, 00:11:02.76\00:11:04.56 we ask the question, 00:11:04.59\00:11:06.16 who is sufficient for these things? 00:11:06.19\00:11:08.70 And the answer is, not us, only Him. 00:11:08.73\00:11:12.53 When the apostle Paul visited here in Athens 00:11:23.11\00:11:25.55 some 2,000 years ago, he discovered a mission field. 00:11:25.58\00:11:29.32 It was a city full of idols, 00:11:29.35\00:11:32.02 and when he met with the philosophers 00:11:32.05\00:11:33.99 up on Mars Hill near the Acropolis, 00:11:34.02\00:11:36.93 he connected the good news of Jesus Christ 00:11:36.96\00:11:40.00 to the culture in which they were living. 00:11:40.03\00:11:42.76 He made that important connection. 00:11:42.80\00:11:44.23 He talked about the altar to the unknown God 00:11:44.27\00:11:47.50 and showed them 00:11:47.54\00:11:48.87 how that was pointing to the one true God. 00:11:48.90\00:11:51.54 Today we also face tremendous mission fields. 00:11:51.57\00:11:54.78 We think of the Middle East. 00:11:54.81\00:11:56.31 We think of the rising number of cities 00:11:56.34\00:11:59.21 with populations way more than a million people. 00:11:59.25\00:12:02.08 We think of the 10/40 window. 00:12:02.12\00:12:03.99 We think of the growth in secularism 00:12:04.02\00:12:06.42 and post-modernism. 00:12:06.45\00:12:07.89 And we even think of the challenge 00:12:07.92\00:12:09.36 of passing on the mission spirit 00:12:09.39\00:12:11.69 to our children. 00:12:11.73\00:12:13.06 And as we face these challenges, 00:12:13.09\00:12:14.73 we know that we have the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:12:14.76\00:12:17.27 and we also know the importance 00:12:17.30\00:12:18.87 of following the example of Jesus himself 00:12:18.90\00:12:21.44 and the Apostle Paul in finding ways 00:12:21.47\00:12:24.17 to make the good news meaningful, attractive, 00:12:24.21\00:12:28.21 and understandable to people in various cultures, 00:12:28.24\00:12:32.21 in various contexts. 00:12:32.25\00:12:35.02 When Global Mission began in 1990, 00:12:35.05\00:12:37.35 there were some 6 million 00:12:37.39\00:12:38.72 Seventh-day Adventist Church members. 00:12:38.75\00:12:40.92 Today, there are more than 18 million 00:12:40.96\00:12:43.69 and thousands of churches have been planted 00:12:43.73\00:12:45.99 in remote Amazon villages such as this one. 00:12:46.03\00:12:49.16 In large cities such as New York, 00:12:49.20\00:12:51.70 and around the world today we see that church planting 00:12:51.73\00:12:55.20 is at the fastest rate ever. 00:12:55.24\00:12:57.41 But huge challenges still remain. 00:12:57.44\00:13:00.04 We look at the vast megalopolises around the world, 00:13:00.08\00:13:03.81 more than 50 percent of the world's population 00:13:03.85\00:13:06.82 live in cities, and that's rapidly growing. 00:13:06.85\00:13:09.58 And we think of the 10/40 window 00:13:09.62\00:13:11.72 where most people have still not even heard 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.52 the name of Jesus 00:13:13.56\00:13:15.16 and we think of the secular and post-modern West 00:13:15.19\00:13:17.79 which seems to be growing, and growing in unbelief. 00:13:17.83\00:13:21.83 When we look at the challenge, 00:13:21.86\00:13:23.20 we say, "Who is sufficient for these things?" 00:13:23.23\00:13:26.10 The only thing that we can do is to recommit ourselves 00:13:26.13\00:13:29.34 to a fresh vision of mission 00:13:29.37\00:13:31.27 and to the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:13:31.31\00:13:33.31 Well, I hope that you've enjoyed today's program, 00:13:48.29\00:13:50.59 and, more than that, I hope that you've been challenged 00:13:50.63\00:13:53.16 and inspired by what you've seen and heard. 00:13:53.19\00:13:56.46 Around the world today, 00:13:56.50\00:13:57.83 we see so many mission challenges 00:13:57.87\00:13:59.47 from small remote areas 00:13:59.50\00:14:01.77 through the teeming megalopolises around the world 00:14:01.80\00:14:04.54 where everyday the populations are just growing 00:14:04.57\00:14:07.84 and growing and growing. 00:14:07.88\00:14:09.21 I want to thank you for your continuing support for mission, 00:14:09.24\00:14:13.08 for your personal involvement, 00:14:13.11\00:14:14.75 for your prayers and for your financial contributions, 00:14:14.78\00:14:18.55 your mission offerings, your tithe, 00:14:18.59\00:14:19.95 your gifts to Global Mission. 00:14:19.99\00:14:21.79 It does make a tremendous difference. 00:14:21.82\00:14:24.69 Before we go, I'd like to offer you a wonderful gift. 00:14:24.73\00:14:28.56 This is a tremendous book. 00:14:28.60\00:14:29.93 It's called It's Time, a brand new book 00:14:29.96\00:14:33.77 full of frontline urban mission stories. 00:14:33.80\00:14:37.27 This isn't a book of theory or theology, 00:14:37.31\00:14:39.87 it's a book of practical illustrations, 00:14:39.91\00:14:42.34 practical examples of holistic urban mission. 00:14:42.38\00:14:46.18 Well, for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause, 00:14:46.21\00:14:48.32 and I hope that you can join me next time 00:14:48.35\00:14:50.25 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:14:50.29\00:14:52.99
