Frankfurt, Germany 00:00:09.97\00:00:11.31 is full of beautiful parks and busy streets. 00:00:11.34\00:00:14.11 Lots of people, ancient buildings 00:00:14.14\00:00:16.24 and post-mortem skyscrapers. 00:00:16.28\00:00:18.65 It's home to the world's largest book fair 00:00:18.68\00:00:21.08 and the world's largest auto show. 00:00:21.12\00:00:23.65 The sites and sounds of Frankfurt 00:00:23.69\00:00:25.95 and mission around the world coming up next. 00:00:25.99\00:00:28.56 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:32.33\00:00:34.80 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:34.83\00:00:37.73 He gave us a mission. 00:00:37.77\00:00:40.50 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world 00:00:40.54\00:00:45.31 telling them of His love." 00:00:45.34\00:00:47.91 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:47.94\00:00:51.75 Hello, and welcome to today's program, 00:00:57.89\00:01:00.36 coming to you from the city of Frankfurt 00:01:00.39\00:01:02.79 in Germany. 00:01:02.82\00:01:04.19 Frankfurt is one of Europe's financial centers. 00:01:04.23\00:01:07.40 It's a wealthy city. 00:01:07.43\00:01:09.53 But apparently, things weren't always that, why? 00:01:09.56\00:01:12.27 Because back in 1868, 00:01:12.30\00:01:15.10 the citizens wanted to have a bridge 00:01:15.14\00:01:17.54 that would connect the city centre 00:01:17.57\00:01:19.91 to the southern districts. 00:01:19.94\00:01:21.88 But the government said, 00:01:21.91\00:01:23.28 as so many governments have said since, 00:01:23.31\00:01:26.41 "Sorry, we don't have the money." 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.45 So, the good citizens took the matter 00:01:28.48\00:01:30.75 into their own hands. 00:01:30.79\00:01:32.49 They raised their own funds, and they built this bridge. 00:01:32.52\00:01:36.46 And today, it is still used, linking across the river. 00:01:36.49\00:01:41.56 It's a reminder to us of the power of the people. 00:01:41.60\00:01:45.13 When people don't let decisions made at a distance 00:01:45.17\00:01:49.80 govern their lives, 00:01:49.84\00:01:51.17 but they take things into their own hands, 00:01:51.21\00:01:53.01 with their own initiative 00:01:53.04\00:01:54.38 and take their own responsibility. 00:01:54.41\00:01:56.61 And we see this happened in the history 00:01:56.64\00:01:58.51 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:01:58.55\00:01:59.98 when lay people have taken their own initiative 00:02:00.02\00:02:03.39 under the guidance of God 00:02:03.42\00:02:04.75 to take mission into their own hands. 00:02:04.79\00:02:07.72 To take those steps of faith that have made a difference 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.63 to start new congregations in new areas, 00:02:10.66\00:02:13.26 to take the gospel message 00:02:13.29\00:02:14.73 to different places around the world. 00:02:14.76\00:02:17.03 First upon today's program, 00:02:17.07\00:02:18.50 we're gonna travel to the Amazon region of Brazil. 00:02:18.53\00:02:21.40 We will see highly trained people 00:02:21.44\00:02:23.87 built bridges to the people of that area. 00:02:23.91\00:02:26.54 Leo and Jessie Hallowell renounced family, friends, 00:02:41.82\00:02:45.13 and the comforts of home. 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.20 They traveled to a distant land 00:02:47.23\00:02:48.96 to serve the people along the Amazon River. 00:02:49.00\00:02:52.00 Throughout their 30 years of work, 00:02:52.03\00:02:54.27 it's estimated that 250,000 people were served. 00:02:54.30\00:02:59.74 And their legacy lives on. 00:02:59.77\00:03:01.91 For 85 years, the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:03:07.45\00:03:10.59 has sponsored workers to operate Luzeiro boats 00:03:10.62\00:03:13.86 in the Amazon River 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.22 to bring hope, health, and healing to the people. 00:03:15.26\00:03:18.43 The Amazon River system includes 00:03:26.23\00:03:27.87 an estimated 38,000 miles of waterways and passages. 00:03:27.90\00:03:32.37 When Leo and Jessie first arrived here, 00:03:32.41\00:03:34.61 they found poverty, superstition, 00:03:34.64\00:03:37.41 and sickness along the banks. 00:03:37.45\00:03:39.81 So in 1931, Leo designed and built a boat 00:03:39.85\00:03:43.15 that he named Luzeiro, or the Light Bear. 00:03:43.18\00:03:47.12 This was an efficient way for them 00:03:47.16\00:03:48.59 to begin a medical missionary program in the Amazon region. 00:03:48.62\00:03:52.29 The Luzeiro boat today is still the most efficient way 00:03:52.33\00:03:55.60 for serving the people. 00:03:55.63\00:03:57.57 Through the years, 00:03:57.60\00:03:58.93 many Luzeiro boats have come and gone, 00:03:58.97\00:04:00.67 transporting medical missionaries and supplies. 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.51 The fleet has now expanded to Luzeiro's XXVI and XXVII. 00:04:03.54\00:04:08.04 Two launches in the original size 00:04:08.08\00:04:10.35 with sleeping rooms for doctors to stay overnight. 00:04:10.38\00:04:13.65 There are also two smaller and faster boats 00:04:13.68\00:04:16.02 used during emergency situations. 00:04:16.05\00:04:18.12 They are called Jessie and Luzeiro Express. 00:04:18.15\00:04:22.02 Currently, Adventist Development and Relief Agency 00:04:22.06\00:04:24.89 or ADRA oversees the boats and teams of volunteers 00:04:24.93\00:04:28.56 who come to offer free health treatments, 00:04:28.60\00:04:30.67 dentistry, and education. 00:04:30.70\00:04:32.23 The project continues, 00:04:35.64\00:04:36.97 still today there are needs here. 00:04:37.01\00:04:39.94 You'll find a lot of needy people 00:04:39.97\00:04:41.44 and a lot of volunteers who come away from the city 00:04:41.48\00:04:44.15 to find happiness and joy 00:04:44.18\00:04:45.65 in serving these remote communities. 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.82 They do their best. 00:04:48.85\00:04:50.19 They want to make a difference and change the lives of people. 00:04:50.22\00:04:52.55 So, through this project, through the Luzeiro boats, 00:04:56.22\00:04:59.06 health comes to the community. 00:04:59.09\00:05:01.00 It comes to their front door. 00:05:01.03\00:05:03.47 We come with qualified doctors and nurses. 00:05:03.50\00:05:05.90 And after a visit, we can see the progress, 00:05:05.93\00:05:08.74 the development, the satisfaction 00:05:08.77\00:05:10.91 where this assistance is most needed. 00:05:10.94\00:05:13.91 So, it's a joy for me to see a project 00:05:13.94\00:05:15.74 that is 85 years old continuing on. 00:05:15.78\00:05:19.45 It's our desire to see more boats, 00:05:19.48\00:05:21.45 reaching more communities, 00:05:21.48\00:05:22.82 so this project can transform and assist even more people. 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.59 The goodwill of the people involved is remarkable. 00:05:32.59\00:05:36.43 Highly trained health professionals 00:05:36.46\00:05:38.00 come on a regular basis, 00:05:38.03\00:05:39.97 offering their time, expertise, and love. 00:05:40.00\00:05:42.90 They also bring tools, medicine, 00:05:43.61\00:05:45.81 and a Christ like attitude 00:05:45.84\00:05:47.18 that is remembered well after they leave. 00:05:47.21\00:05:50.55 Leo and Jessie Hallowell made quite an impact 00:05:50.58\00:05:53.15 in the Amazon jungle. 00:05:53.18\00:05:55.12 A small medical clinic they established 00:05:55.15\00:05:57.49 is today's largest Seventh-day Adventist hospital 00:05:57.52\00:06:00.66 in the country of Brazil. 00:06:00.69\00:06:02.79 There are other Adventist owned 00:06:02.82\00:06:04.43 and operated hospitals in the region, 00:06:04.46\00:06:06.43 schools and universities. 00:06:06.46\00:06:09.00 Their dedicated works stretched from Manaus to Belem, 00:06:09.03\00:06:12.17 approximately 2,000 miles away. 00:06:12.20\00:06:14.97 But it's only in heaven that we'll know 00:06:15.00\00:06:17.01 the true extents of their boat ministry. 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.67 Thank you for your prayerful support of mission. 00:06:19.71\00:06:22.24 My guest is Pastor Simret Mahary, 00:06:27.82\00:06:30.19 who is a pastor here in Frankfurt. 00:06:30.22\00:06:33.15 And I met Simret 00:06:33.19\00:06:35.06 perhaps two or three years ago, I think. 00:06:35.09\00:06:37.36 And at that time, you shared with me a dream, 00:06:37.39\00:06:41.40 a vision for starting a center here in Frankfurt 00:06:41.43\00:06:44.93 that would connect with the community. 00:06:44.97\00:06:46.90 And I'm sitting even now. 00:06:46.94\00:06:48.90 Describe what this center is please? 00:06:48.94\00:06:52.77 Basically, this center is there for people 00:06:52.81\00:06:56.51 from Frankfurt to come here and participate 00:06:56.54\00:07:00.35 or initiate different cultural activities 00:07:00.38\00:07:04.02 like cooking and eating together, 00:07:04.05\00:07:06.96 art exhibition, looking at good film 00:07:06.99\00:07:10.79 and discussing about it or having literature nights. 00:07:10.83\00:07:15.13 And we use these different cultural activities 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.53 to get people together and engage in conversation 00:07:18.57\00:07:22.07 and in good community. 00:07:22.10\00:07:24.01 It's a wonderful idea. 00:07:24.04\00:07:26.27 And, so you're, 00:07:26.31\00:07:28.44 to set the contexture on a busy road here, 00:07:28.48\00:07:32.15 there is a pedestrian crossing right here. 00:07:32.18\00:07:34.78 And so, this is a fairly 00:07:34.82\00:07:36.45 densely populated neighborhood around here. 00:07:36.48\00:07:38.92 It is, it is definitely. 00:07:38.95\00:07:40.36 It is a very diverse community here in Frankfurt, 00:07:40.39\00:07:43.56 and especially in the section where we are as well, 00:07:43.59\00:07:46.90 with people coming from over 100 nations. 00:07:46.93\00:07:50.73 So, what we try to do is reach out to people 00:07:50.77\00:07:54.54 coming from different cultural and religious backgrounds 00:07:54.57\00:07:58.67 by making it possible for them to get together here 00:07:58.71\00:08:02.51 and share what they have. 00:08:02.54\00:08:05.08 So, one of the things which we do is, for example, 00:08:05.11\00:08:09.35 in this cooking and eating experiences, 00:08:09.38\00:08:12.35 we go to different countries. 00:08:12.39\00:08:14.06 Now, we've been to Ethiopia, we went to Peru, 00:08:14.09\00:08:17.26 and soon we are going to Mexico. 00:08:17.29\00:08:19.33 So, we did actually invite people 00:08:19.36\00:08:21.20 from those countries 00:08:21.23\00:08:22.80 and have them cook with us 00:08:22.83\00:08:25.00 and invite the neighborhood for that, 00:08:25.03\00:08:26.67 and then we cook and we eat. 00:08:26.70\00:08:28.04 And that way, we engage a good conversations, 00:08:28.07\00:08:31.47 but we also get to know people 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.78 coming from different backgrounds. 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.84 And also have a chance, 00:08:35.88\00:08:37.65 in the course of our encounters 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.18 to speak about the things that matter to us in life. 00:08:40.22\00:08:43.08 What a wonderful thing, 00:08:43.12\00:08:44.45 so, to me, what you are doing here is 00:08:44.49\00:08:46.89 you are mingling with people, you are building friendships 00:08:46.92\00:08:51.49 with people who you may never ever have an opportunity 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.06 to do that with otherwise. 00:08:54.10\00:08:55.73 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:08:55.76\00:08:57.27 And we are, you know, 00:08:57.30\00:08:58.80 living in a very secular society here. 00:08:58.83\00:09:01.34 And as people come here, and especially get the chance 00:09:01.37\00:09:07.64 to participate and express themselves, 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.21 they do connect. 00:09:10.25\00:09:11.61 And notice, this is a place where we can belong, 00:09:11.65\00:09:14.78 where what we have to share is respected and cherished. 00:09:14.82\00:09:18.52 And that makes it possible for us to meet 00:09:18.55\00:09:21.42 actually, different kinds of people 00:09:21.46\00:09:23.83 who come here to the Presence KulturLounge. 00:09:23.86\00:09:27.63 Because if you put a sign up here, 00:09:27.66\00:09:29.10 instead, "We are going to have Bible meetings, 00:09:29.13\00:09:32.23 please come," 00:09:32.27\00:09:33.60 the people who have been coming 00:09:33.64\00:09:34.97 would never come to those meetings, 00:09:35.00\00:09:36.34 because of their background 00:09:36.37\00:09:38.31 and what they think of Christianity. 00:09:38.34\00:09:40.51 I would suppose, of course, for many. 00:09:40.54\00:09:42.68 Yeah. 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.05 And what we are noticing here is that many people 00:09:44.08\00:09:48.28 are very skeptical towards organized religions, 00:09:48.32\00:09:51.85 and they are skeptical towards institutions. 00:09:51.89\00:09:54.92 But at the same time, they hunger for more, 00:09:54.96\00:09:57.99 or they want to have good encounters. 00:09:58.03\00:09:59.89 They seek answers for the questions 00:09:59.93\00:10:03.83 that they may have, 00:10:03.87\00:10:05.20 or they want other people with whom they can discuss 00:10:05.23\00:10:08.27 about the things that matter to them. 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.41 And, what in fact, culture does in many ways 00:10:10.44\00:10:15.84 is to make that possible. 00:10:15.88\00:10:17.91 And culture, by saying culture, I mean, in a very basic way 00:10:17.95\00:10:21.82 like cooking and eating, you know, arts, music, 00:10:21.85\00:10:25.92 and good films as well. 00:10:25.95\00:10:28.32 They thematize different things that matter to us, 00:10:28.36\00:10:31.36 or make set up a context for people 00:10:31.39\00:10:36.36 to engage and counter each other 00:10:36.40\00:10:38.13 and that is actually very well received. 00:10:38.17\00:10:41.77 Fantastic. 00:10:41.80\00:10:43.14 Now, you got some terrific photos on the wall. 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.67 What's the story with these? 00:10:45.71\00:10:47.94 What are the plans with these pictures? 00:10:47.98\00:10:49.74 Yeah, that's quite a story for itself. 00:10:49.78\00:10:53.58 You know, when we were setting up 00:10:53.62\00:10:55.28 Presence Kulturlounge preparing to open up, 00:10:55.32\00:10:58.25 a person from the neighborhood living right across the street 00:10:58.29\00:11:03.12 saw that we are starting something here. 00:11:03.16\00:11:06.06 That person, her name is Marina and she is a art curator, 00:11:06.09\00:11:10.50 that means she works with artists 00:11:10.53\00:11:12.33 to do exhibitions. 00:11:12.37\00:11:14.04 So when she saw that we are opening up a kulturlounge, 00:11:14.07\00:11:17.91 she wrote us an email and asks whether we can work together, 00:11:17.94\00:11:21.84 and whether she can do an art exhibition here. 00:11:21.88\00:11:24.81 And I said "Okay, let's talk about that." 00:11:24.85\00:11:27.68 And I offered her to do an art exhibition, 00:11:27.72\00:11:32.15 which we just don't do classically, 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.29 so that people can look at the pictures. 00:11:34.32\00:11:37.29 But we said, "Let's take those pictures 00:11:37.33\00:11:39.43 to speak about life and engage in discussions." 00:11:39.46\00:11:42.50 So, she said, "Yes." 00:11:42.53\00:11:43.87 And that's how the art exhibition story started here, 00:11:43.90\00:11:47.34 and this is the second round of exhibition 00:11:47.37\00:11:50.17 that's we are having right now. 00:11:50.21\00:11:51.71 And at the end of the exhibition, 00:11:51.74\00:11:53.34 we take free pictures, 00:11:53.38\00:11:55.11 and engage about the things that happened in the pictures 00:11:55.14\00:11:58.35 and the life topics that come up there, 00:11:58.38\00:12:01.55 and we would engage in discussion. 00:12:01.58\00:12:03.32 And the nice part of the story is that 00:12:03.35\00:12:05.95 Marina did not just organize 00:12:05.99\00:12:08.29 or does not just organize art exhibitions, 00:12:08.32\00:12:11.69 she is actually part 00:12:11.73\00:12:13.09 of the Presence Kulturlounge team. 00:12:13.13\00:12:15.20 And we plan the different activities 00:12:15.23\00:12:17.70 that we do here together. 00:12:17.73\00:12:19.07 Fantastic. 00:12:19.10\00:12:20.44 So, you are not doing something just for the community, 00:12:20.47\00:12:22.87 you're doing it with the community, 00:12:22.90\00:12:24.24 which is an important distinction. 00:12:24.27\00:12:25.61 Exactly. 00:12:25.64\00:12:26.98 And that's perhaps one of the most important things 00:12:27.01\00:12:30.31 about it all that we just not offer things, 00:12:30.35\00:12:33.28 we engage people so that this place can be a place 00:12:33.31\00:12:37.29 where they can share what they have. 00:12:37.32\00:12:39.59 And as they do, they gain trust and friendship takes place. 00:12:39.62\00:12:44.03 And it becomes a channel to give and take, 00:12:44.06\00:12:47.16 and to speak about things that matter in life. 00:12:47.20\00:12:51.23 So participation is the core of what we do here. 00:12:51.27\00:12:54.30 That's fantastic. 00:12:54.34\00:12:55.94 Well, thank you so much for sharing with us. 00:12:55.97\00:12:58.31 And it's a pleasure to see this coming into fruition. 00:12:58.34\00:13:01.01 You're welcome. 00:13:01.04\00:13:02.38 It's very good to have you here. 00:13:02.41\00:13:03.75 Thank you. 00:13:03.78\00:13:05.15 More than a hundred years ago, Ellen White talked about 00:13:05.18\00:13:08.02 a concept called centers of influence. 00:13:08.05\00:13:11.32 And I think what we see here is a 21st century version 00:13:11.35\00:13:16.22 that is adapted to the needs 00:13:16.26\00:13:17.79 and interests of this particular community. 00:13:17.83\00:13:20.20 And of course, we see 00:13:20.23\00:13:21.56 hundreds of different centers of influence 00:13:21.60\00:13:23.50 around the world 00:13:23.53\00:13:24.87 meeting different needs in different ways. 00:13:24.90\00:13:26.90 Don't go away, 00:13:26.94\00:13:28.27 we will be right back after this break. 00:13:28.30\00:13:29.64
