suffered in Chinese labor camps.

In early 1950's,

my father was
studying to be a doctor

but had to quit
because of Sabbath conflicts.

He began assisting Pastor Devlin

with translating
Ellen G. White books.

In 1958, he was arrested
and sent to brutal labor camps.

His crime, sharing his faith.

Sometime later my
mother was also arrested

and sent to
different labor education camp.

During the next 10 years,

they saw each other
for total of 15 minutes,

but both my mother and father

remained faithful
to God and each other.

During his time in prison,

forbidden to worship

But hidden in a
pocket was a small book

It was more precious than gold.

I learned of God's
grace, and trust, worthiness

Today I serve as secretary
of the Chinese Union Mission.

without a faithful
example of my parents

who despite incredible adversary

stayed faithful to the

What kept you
going? Why did you do this?

that when he was very young,

he thought about his
life, you know, you grow up,

you get married,
then you have children,

He felt life is meaningless
until he accept Jesus, he,

Jesus came into his
heart, then he knew that,

even though after he

After he became a
Christian, he was really happy

Chinese community here?

Well, out of the 2 million
population in metro Vancouver,

we have about 500,000
Chinese population here.

500,000? That's right. Yeah.

And among them,

more than half of them are
from mainland China recently

for the past one or two decades,

and the church here used
to be mostly Hong Kongese,

Chinese members.

So they find it hard to adjust

to this new
populations coming in,

with the language barriers
and the cultural barriers.

So when I immigrated here,

the church called me to help out

reaching the mandarin speaking
Chinese population here.

Yeah, because sometimes,

we think of Chinese
as one monolithic group,

but there is many
different languages

and cultural groups and kind of.

Now, you had experience
back in mainland China,

planting churches

and that's what you are
doing right here in Vancouver.

What sort of
methods are you using

to try to start this
new group of believers?

I'll tell you what we are
doing here is quite similar

to what we have been doing
in Beijing when I was there.

What we do
initially is we open our house

as venue of fellowship
because people are hesitant

to go to the formal
setting of a church.

So, we invite them to our
Friday night fellowship meal,

we eat
together, we sing together

and then we
talk about some issue

that is not very indoctrinating,

but it's more
practical in a way that,

we help them to
cope with their stress

or their homesickness,

that's how we
start out doing ministry.

And then once
they become interested

and being drawn
to the love of God,

we would organize
them and invite them

into Bible study
groups during weekdays.

Sometimes we go to the
major university campus

sometimes we go
to the students' home

and have studies there.

After about a year of study
also, some of them gradually

they change
their behavior stand,

they become more
convince of our truth

and they become baptized.

So, for the past two years

baptisms already.

Well, we have several,
many miracle testimonies.

One of them is a young girl.

She is from Shenyang

and she has no
religion whatsoever.

She never even heard
about the name of Jesus

and when she just
came here for studies.

Some Sunday church had
a big program for retreat,

and they invited her
to their ministry there

and evangelism.

And she said,
"I don't understand

why they close their eyes,

what are they
talking about I don't know,

I don't even know
this is a church thing,

so, but, she
was so grateful that

she was invited to our place

through a classmate
who is Adventist before.

And then that guy
invited him to our place

and with this relax environment,

she started gradually
was no barriers and offenses,

she started to know everything
about God and Adventism.

And now she is
very active in church.

And she is leading
out the youth ministry,

organizing study groups
and she is also a good singer.

What are the biggest
challenges that you are facing?

Well, one of the biggest
challenge is human resources.

More likeminded God fearing
and fearless missionary people

open up their private life
