White books. 00:02:04.79\00:02:07.92 In 1958, he was arrested and sent to brutal labor camps. 00:02:07.96\00:02:14.50 His crime, sharing his faith. 00:02:14.53\00:02:18.13 Sometime later my mother was also arrested 00:02:18.17\00:02:21.47 and sent to different labor education camp. 00:02:21.50\00:02:25.14 During the next 10 years, 00:02:25.17\00:02:27.38 they saw each other for total of 15 minutes, 00:02:27.41\00:02:30.55 but both my mother and father 00:02:30.58\00:02:32.51 remained faithful to God and each other. 00:02:32.55\00:02:36.45 During his time in prison, 00:02:36.48\00:02:38.49 my father was forbidden to worship 00:02:38.52\00:02:40.86 or to have any Christian resources. 00:02:40.89\00:02:43.69 But hidden in a pocket was a small book 00:02:43.73\00:02:46.76 in which he had written from memory 00:02:46.80\00:02:49.13 many favorite Bible passages. 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.07 It was more precious than gold. 00:02:52.10\00:02:54.77 I learned of God's grace, and trust, worthiness 00:02:54.80\00:02:57.94 through my parents. 00:02:57.97\00:02:59.57 And my father's little book taught me 00:02:59.61\00:03:01.88 the importance of God's word. 00:03:01.91\00:03:03.95 Today I serve as secretary of the Chinese Union Mission. 00:03:03.98\00:03:08.08 And I know that I won't be here 00:03:08.12\00:03:10.15 without a faithful example of my parents 00:03:10.19\00:03:13.86 who despite incredible adversary 00:03:13.89\00:03:16.79 stayed faithful to the one who is ever faithful. 00:03:16.83\00:03:20.66 Thank you very much for joining us. 00:03:52.89\00:03:56.13 Now we are all very curious, 00:03:56.16\00:03:57.87 do you still have that little notebook? 00:03:57.90\00:04:00.14 Yes. 00:04:05.94\00:04:08.04 How much did this little notebook mean to you 00:04:12.11\00:04:15.05 when you were in the camp? 00:04:15.08\00:04:16.52 So the little book, was one time 00:04:38.31\00:04:42.48 he was able to visit the home and he wrote 00:04:42.51\00:04:47.22 because he wrote all of the Bible passage 00:04:47.25\00:04:50.09 on this small booklet. 00:04:50.12\00:04:52.65 So as he, going his daily routine, 00:04:56.93\00:05:00.43 he memorized these Bible texts 00:05:00.46\00:05:02.53 and also it gave him lot of encouragement. 00:05:02.56\00:05:07.04 Okay, I must ask you were put into the camp 00:05:07.07\00:05:12.14 for sharing your faith, but you still shared your faith 00:05:12.17\00:05:16.88 while you were in the camp. 00:05:16.91\00:05:18.31 What kept you going? Why did you do this? 00:05:18.35\00:05:20.65 So his response is that when he was very young, 00:05:29.96\00:05:33.70 he thought about his life, you know, you grow up, 00:05:33.73\00:05:37.47 you get married, then you have children, 00:05:37.50\00:05:40.57 then eventually you die. 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.90 He felt life is meaningless until he accept Jesus, he, 00:05:42.94\00:05:48.74 Jesus came into his heart, then he knew that, 00:05:48.78\00:05:52.78 that Jesus is all he wanted in his life. 00:05:52.81\00:05:56.42 So that kept him going 00:05:56.45\00:05:59.05 even though after he was put into prison, so he-- 00:05:59.09\00:06:04.89 After he became a Christian, he was really happy 00:06:04.93\00:06:08.63 that wanting to tell everyone about his belief. 00:06:08.66\00:06:11.77 So even in the labor camp that fire still inside him, 00:06:11.80\00:06:15.50 he want to tell others. 00:06:15.54\00:06:17.54 How do you feel now 00:06:17.57\00:06:18.97 looking at the Adventist church and seeing that your son 00:06:19.01\00:06:22.61 is a secretary of the Chinese Union Mission? 00:06:22.64\00:06:26.01 So I am very happy that my son can participate 00:06:35.36\00:06:39.16 in a church work. 00:06:39.19\00:06:40.53 So he is very happy that his son can participate 00:06:53.78\00:06:57.65 in a church work 00:06:57.68\00:06:59.61 and he just want to like to tell everyone 00:06:59.65\00:07:02.12 that we are at the end of this age 00:07:02.15\00:07:05.15 especially the seven churches were coming 00:07:05.19\00:07:08.09 to the church of laity, the Satan is working very hard 00:07:08.12\00:07:13.93 to draw everyone away from Jesus' truth. 00:07:13.96\00:07:18.57 And he wants to encourage everyone 00:07:18.60\00:07:22.90 to hold on to God's truth unto the end. 00:07:22.94\00:07:25.91 So, we are so honored 00:07:33.65\00:07:35.58 and we want to thank you so much 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.19 for sharing your story with us. 00:07:37.22\00:07:38.75 Thank you. 00:07:38.79\00:07:40.12 Also thank you everyone. 00:07:45.36\00:07:47.63 Thank you. Thank you very much. 00:07:48.06\00:07:49.40 We're thankful for how the church 00:07:49.43\00:07:50.77 has been growing on mainland China. 00:07:50.80\00:07:53.13 But there is also a tremendous mission field 00:07:53.17\00:07:55.07 among Chinese people 00:07:55.10\00:07:56.44 who have immigrated to all corners of the world. 00:07:56.47\00:07:59.91 And my guest is Pastor Peter and here in Vancouver, 00:07:59.94\00:08:03.95 Pastor Peter, you have something of a mission field 00:08:03.98\00:08:06.18 among the Chinese people. 00:08:06.21\00:08:07.75 Describe for me the Chinese community here? 00:08:07.78\00:08:10.79 Well, out of the 2 million population in metro Vancouver, 00:08:10.82\00:08:14.22 we have about 500,000 Chinese population here. 00:08:14.26\00:08:19.36 500,000? That's right. Yeah. 00:08:19.39\00:08:21.63 And among them, 00:08:21.66\00:08:23.13 more than half of them are from mainland China recently 00:08:23.16\00:08:26.97 for the past one or two decades, 00:08:27.00\00:08:29.30 and the church here used to be mostly Hong Kongese, 00:08:29.34\00:08:34.61 Chinese members. 00:08:34.64\00:08:36.88 So they find it hard to adjust 00:08:36.91\00:08:39.98 to this new populations coming in, 00:08:40.02\00:08:42.95 with the language barriers and the cultural barriers. 00:08:42.98\00:08:46.55 So when I immigrated here, 00:08:46.59\00:08:50.03 the church called me to help out 00:08:50.06\00:08:52.86 reaching the mandarin speaking Chinese population here. 00:08:52.89\00:08:56.70 Yeah, because sometimes, 00:08:56.73\00:08:58.23 we think of Chinese as one monolithic group, 00:08:58.27\00:09:00.64 but there is many different languages 00:09:00.67\00:09:02.17 and cultural groups and kind of. 00:09:02.20\00:09:03.67 Wonderful. 00:09:03.71\00:09:05.04 Now, you had experience back in mainland China, 00:09:05.07\00:09:07.54 planting churches 00:09:07.58\00:09:08.91 and that's what you are doing right here in Vancouver. 00:09:08.94\00:09:11.38 What sort of methods are you using 00:09:11.41\00:09:13.68 to try to start this new group of believers? 00:09:13.72\00:09:16.69 I'll tell you what we are doing here is quite similar 00:09:16.72\00:09:19.99 to what we have been doing in Beijing when I was there. 00:09:20.02\00:09:24.19 What we do initially is we open our house 00:09:24.23\00:09:27.30 as venue of fellowship because people are hesitant 00:09:27.33\00:09:31.43 to go to the formal setting of a church. 00:09:31.47\00:09:34.10 So, we invite them to our Friday night fellowship meal, 00:09:34.14\00:09:38.64 we eat together, we sing together 00:09:38.67\00:09:41.11 and then we talk about some issue 00:09:41.14\00:09:43.58 that is not very indoctrinating, 00:09:43.61\00:09:47.42 but it's more practical in a way that, 00:09:47.45\00:09:50.32 we help them to cope with their stress 00:09:50.35\00:09:52.95 or their homesickness, 00:09:52.99\00:09:55.12 that's how we start out doing ministry. 00:09:55.16\00:09:58.06 And then once they become interested 00:09:58.09\00:10:00.56 and being drawn to the love of God, 00:10:00.60\00:10:03.00 we would organize them and invite them 00:10:03.03\00:10:05.20 into Bible study groups during weekdays. 00:10:05.23\00:10:08.40 Sometimes we go to the major university campus 00:10:08.44\00:10:13.58 here like SFUR, UBC, OBCIT, 00:10:13.61\00:10:17.28 sometimes we go to the students' home 00:10:17.31\00:10:19.61 and have studies there. 00:10:19.65\00:10:22.12 After about a year of study also, some of them gradually 00:10:22.15\00:10:27.32 they change their behavior stand, 00:10:27.36\00:10:28.89 they become more convince of our truth 00:10:28.92\00:10:31.93 and they become baptized. 00:10:31.96\00:10:33.76 So, for the past two years 00:10:33.80\00:10:35.33 we have about 14 baptisms already. 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.70 Wonderful. 00:10:37.73\00:10:39.07 It sounds to me that you're putting 00:10:39.10\00:10:40.44 Christ's method into practice, 00:10:40.47\00:10:41.80 where you're mingling and you're building bridges 00:10:41.84\00:10:43.20 and making friendships, wonderful. 00:10:43.24\00:10:45.07 Can you give me an example 00:10:45.11\00:10:46.44 of someone whose life has been touched 00:10:46.47\00:10:48.51 through this ministry? 00:10:48.54\00:10:50.18 Well, we have several, many miracle testimonies. 00:10:50.21\00:10:54.95 One of them is a young girl. 00:10:54.98\00:10:56.92 She is from Shenyang 00:10:56.95\00:10:58.29 and she has no religion whatsoever. 00:10:58.32\00:11:00.96 She never even heard about the name of Jesus 00:11:00.99\00:11:03.79 and when she just came here for studies. 00:11:03.83\00:11:08.06 Some Sunday church had a big program for retreat, 00:11:08.10\00:11:12.83 and they invited her to their ministry there 00:11:12.87\00:11:16.04 and evangelism. 00:11:16.07\00:11:17.44 And she said, "I don't understand 00:11:17.47\00:11:19.57 why they close their eyes, 00:11:19.61\00:11:20.94 what are they talking about I don't know, 00:11:20.98\00:11:23.45 I don't even know this is a church thing, 00:11:23.48\00:11:26.38 so, but, she was so grateful that 00:11:26.41\00:11:29.72 she was invited to our place 00:11:29.75\00:11:31.75 through a classmate who is Adventist before. 00:11:31.79\00:11:35.52 And then that guy invited him to our place 00:11:35.56\00:11:38.59 and with this relax environment, 00:11:38.63\00:11:41.03 she started gradually was no barriers and offenses, 00:11:41.06\00:11:45.13 she started to know everything about God and Adventism. 00:11:45.17\00:11:49.44 And now she is very active in church. 00:11:49.47\00:11:52.14 And she is leading out the youth ministry, 00:11:52.17\00:11:56.04 organizing study groups and she is also a good singer. 00:11:56.08\00:12:01.48 That's wonderful. Yeah. 00:12:01.52\00:12:02.98 What are the biggest challenges that you are facing? 00:12:03.02\00:12:06.76 Well, one of the biggest challenge is human resources. 00:12:06.79\00:12:12.83 More likeminded God fearing and fearless missionary people 00:12:12.86\00:12:18.53 who are willing to open up their private life 00:12:18.57\00:12:22.17 to show true Christianity to the outside population. 00:12:22.20\00:12:26.11 That's what we need most. Yes. 00:12:26.14\00:12:28.34 And what's your greatest hope for the future? 00:12:28.38\00:12:32.28 My hope is that 00:12:32.31\00:12:35.12 there will be more mandarin speaking Chinese people 00:12:35.15\00:12:38.65 came to know Jesus 00:12:38.69\00:12:40.09 and have this wonderful hope of second coming of Jesus. 00:12:40.12\00:12:44.69 Yeah. Terrific. 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.06 Well, Peter, thank you so much for sharing with us today 00:12:46.09\00:12:48.73 and it's just exciting to see, I mean, 300 Adventists 00:12:48.76\00:12:53.27 among 500,000, that's a mission field. 00:12:53.30\00:12:56.34 May God continue to bless you. 00:12:56.37\00:12:58.01 And viewers at home, 00:12:58.04\00:12:59.37 please remember Pastor Peter and his team. 00:12:59.41\00:13:02.51 What a tremendous challenge right here in Canada, 00:13:02.54\00:13:05.68 in Vancouver. 00:13:05.71\00:13:07.12 But God is leading, lives have been touched, 00:13:07.15\00:13:09.25 lives have been changed. 00:13:09.28\00:13:10.92 Continue to pray that God will lead for the future 00:13:10.95\00:13:13.22 and as Peter said that 00:13:13.25\00:13:14.59 there will be more human resources available 00:13:14.62\00:13:17.96 to come and help this ministry. 00:13:17.99\00:13:20.46 Don't go away, we will be right back after this break. 00:13:20.50\00:13:22.83
