Welcome back to the beautiful city 00:00:11.47\00:00:12.97 of Heidelberg. 00:00:13.01\00:00:14.44 Our next story is of a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, 00:00:14.48\00:00:17.98 who is also a refugee. 00:00:18.01\00:00:20.08 Forced from his home, 00:00:20.12\00:00:21.55 he started helping people along the way. 00:00:21.58\00:00:24.35 He still lives in a refugee camp. 00:00:24.39\00:00:27.52 And, he has led 300 people to baptism. 00:00:27.56\00:00:30.99 Gina tells his story. 00:00:31.03\00:00:32.53 Hi Gary, I'm really excited about this interview, 00:00:32.56\00:00:36.06 because it is the first time 00:00:36.10\00:00:38.60 I've been able to interview someone 00:00:38.63\00:00:40.30 who has had to flee their home 00:00:40.34\00:00:42.07 and become a refugee. 00:00:42.10\00:00:43.91 And this person 00:00:43.94\00:00:45.27 is a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, 00:00:45.31\00:00:47.38 and this is Pastor Joseph Dut. 00:00:47.41\00:00:51.05 And I am so happy that we can be together 00:00:51.08\00:00:54.32 and you can share your story. 00:00:54.35\00:00:56.79 It is an amazing story. 00:00:56.82\00:00:58.29 Thank you. 00:00:58.32\00:00:59.65 Yes. 00:00:59.69\00:01:01.02 When I met you 00:01:01.06\00:01:02.39 and I heard that your story of how you had to flee. 00:01:02.42\00:01:06.29 All these questions came to mind. 00:01:06.33\00:01:08.93 And one of the first was, I was wondering, 00:01:08.96\00:01:12.00 how do you decide when you are in a war zone? 00:01:12.03\00:01:14.70 How do you decide when it's time 00:01:14.74\00:01:17.07 to run away from your home? 00:01:17.11\00:01:20.28 Thank you very much, sister. 00:01:20.31\00:01:23.01 The question is really very good 00:01:23.04\00:01:25.18 and I am happy that you come and visit us. 00:01:25.21\00:01:28.82 And thank you God for bringing you safe. 00:01:28.85\00:01:32.02 Actually, when we found our self in the war zone, 00:01:32.05\00:01:39.03 we just run, because the incident, 00:01:39.09\00:01:44.33 the fighting happened, 00:01:44.37\00:01:46.00 and then we run away from home. 00:01:46.03\00:01:49.24 So, many of us run away, 00:01:49.27\00:01:53.21 and even if they met after three days with children, 00:01:53.24\00:01:58.18 wives, and the husbands. 00:01:58.21\00:02:01.98 Some of them went and met in the refugee camp 00:02:02.02\00:02:06.15 because there was no option for us to decide when to run. 00:02:06.19\00:02:12.53 So it was a coin of crossing fire. 00:02:12.56\00:02:16.90 And many of us run from home. 00:02:16.93\00:02:20.97 Now, when you were running, just before you left, 00:02:21.00\00:02:24.31 were you able to grab anything from your house 00:02:24.34\00:02:27.08 or did you just run with nothing? 00:02:27.11\00:02:31.55 It was very difficult. 00:02:31.58\00:02:33.62 Many of us who were found at home, 00:02:33.65\00:02:37.99 they managed to save their life. 00:02:38.02\00:02:42.22 Because if you run a home, 00:02:42.26\00:02:43.89 if you run inside 00:02:43.93\00:02:45.63 to grab anything, it is difficult. 00:02:45.66\00:02:48.16 And good thing I can testify now 00:02:48.20\00:02:51.63 was that many members 00:02:51.67\00:02:54.94 from our Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:02:54.97\00:02:58.77 they run, 00:02:58.81\00:03:00.14 some of them run with their Bibles. 00:03:00.18\00:03:01.84 And many of them who saw fighting at work 00:03:01.88\00:03:05.31 while they were not at home run without the Bible. 00:03:05.35\00:03:08.45 And people run with only the clothes you wear. 00:03:08.48\00:03:12.39 And that's it? Yeah. 00:03:12.42\00:03:13.86 And they run to refugee camps? Exactly. 00:03:13.89\00:03:17.33 And I understand that you and your family ended up 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.43 in a refugee camp 00:03:20.46\00:03:22.26 in the northern part of Uganda? 00:03:22.30\00:03:24.47 Sure. 00:03:24.50\00:03:25.83 And when you arrived there, 00:03:25.87\00:03:27.84 your son asked you an interesting question. 00:03:27.87\00:03:30.71 What did your son ask you? 00:03:30.74\00:03:33.78 When we arrived there, it was late in the evening. 00:03:33.81\00:03:38.25 And UNHCR plus UN agencies, World Food Program, 00:03:38.28\00:03:45.05 they received us. 00:03:45.09\00:03:47.46 And in fact, the place was a bush 00:03:47.49\00:03:52.16 which given by the Uganda government 00:03:52.19\00:03:56.13 to settle the refugees. 00:03:56.16\00:03:59.90 That evening my son asked me, "Hey, Daddy, it is now day, 00:03:59.93\00:04:06.78 it is a time now to go and sleep. 00:04:06.81\00:04:09.14 Where can I go and sleep?" 00:04:09.18\00:04:11.71 Then I say, "We are going to sleep under that tree." 00:04:11.75\00:04:15.68 And he said, "Eh! 00:04:15.72\00:04:17.32 That tree is not for us to sleep, 00:04:17.35\00:04:20.76 it's that is for dog." 00:04:20.79\00:04:23.12 And I say, "Son, let's hope that God 00:04:23.16\00:04:29.90 will provide a shelter for us." 00:04:29.93\00:04:32.67 And, he went together with me 00:04:32.70\00:04:36.81 and we spent a night under that tree. 00:04:36.84\00:04:40.14 And since that time, 00:04:40.18\00:04:41.68 has God provided a shelter for you and your family? 00:04:41.71\00:04:45.08 Sure. 00:04:45.11\00:04:46.75 After three weeks, 00:04:46.78\00:04:52.59 the South Sudan Field 00:04:52.62\00:04:54.26 which was Greater Equatoria by that time, 00:04:54.29\00:04:57.33 led by Pastor Clement. 00:04:57.36\00:04:59.49 They managed to send us some money, 00:04:59.53\00:05:06.50 the crisis kind of money to help us settle. 00:05:07.37\00:05:11.61 And when we received that money, 00:05:11.64\00:05:15.48 we made a small house for us to live with the children. 00:05:15.51\00:05:22.48 And I hope God answered that question which my son asked. 00:05:22.55\00:05:27.49 So after three weeks, God provided a shelter for us. 00:05:27.52\00:05:31.49 So, are you still living in a shelter 00:05:31.53\00:05:34.40 in the refugee camp? 00:05:34.43\00:05:35.76 Sure. 00:05:35.80\00:05:37.13 You are still there? Sure, I am still there. 00:05:37.17\00:05:39.40 And what about the other people there? 00:05:39.43\00:05:41.57 Have you found other Seventh-day Adventists 00:05:41.60\00:05:43.84 living in a refugee camp? 00:05:43.87\00:05:47.88 The amazing things happened. 00:05:47.91\00:05:51.11 We went there and there was no church, 00:05:51.15\00:05:58.12 which was existing. 00:05:58.42\00:06:00.26 Only few members, they were existing there. 00:06:00.29\00:06:02.82 So, when we arrived, we started mobilizing our self. 00:06:02.86\00:06:09.80 We said, as Jesus said to us that you will hear wars 00:06:09.83\00:06:15.17 and the rumors of the wars, 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.27 and you do not need to get confused. 00:06:17.31\00:06:20.44 So, therefore we mobilized ourselves 00:06:20.48\00:06:24.31 and then we start working, we start preaching, 00:06:24.35\00:06:28.32 we start advising and help others 00:06:28.35\00:06:35.32 to come to Christ because this is last days, 00:06:37.36\00:06:40.76 and the war is happening. 00:06:40.80\00:06:42.46 These are happening because God Himself 00:06:42.50\00:06:47.94 wanted His people to find rest, to find refuge in Him. 00:06:47.97\00:06:53.98 So, on that very day, so we managed 00:06:54.01\00:06:59.05 to mobilize our self and the youth came up 00:06:59.08\00:07:03.35 with a slogan, say, "Come, we meet Jesus! 00:07:03.39\00:07:07.46 Come, we hide in Jesus!" 00:07:07.49\00:07:10.13 And that program of the youth, it really does a lot. 00:07:10.16\00:07:16.30 So, membership, when we reached there, 00:07:16.33\00:07:19.63 we were not many. 00:07:19.67\00:07:21.67 We were few, but now, we managed to baptize 310. 00:07:21.70\00:07:28.68 310 baptisms in the refugee camp? 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.35 In the refugees camp, yes. 00:07:32.38\00:07:33.75 That's wonderful. Thank you. 00:07:33.78\00:07:35.95 I want to come back 00:07:35.98\00:07:37.32 just briefly about the youth group. 00:07:37.35\00:07:38.69 Okay. 00:07:38.72\00:07:40.06 Now, I understand that this youth group 00:07:40.09\00:07:41.56 is made up of young people from varying tribes. 00:07:41.59\00:07:44.56 Exactly. 00:07:44.59\00:07:45.96 How did that work? 00:07:45.99\00:07:47.33 Aren't these young people usually fighting 00:07:47.36\00:07:49.83 against each other? 00:07:49.86\00:07:51.30 When the community saw 00:07:51.33\00:07:53.54 the youth from Seventh-day Adventist, 00:07:53.57\00:07:56.20 they are together, 00:07:56.24\00:07:58.17 especially from this warring ethnic groups, 00:07:58.21\00:08:02.44 Dinka and Nuer, they became happy. 00:08:02.48\00:08:07.38 And they consider saying that, 00:08:07.42\00:08:09.52 "This is really a church which can bring the good news to us." 00:08:09.55\00:08:14.89 So many young people joined us. 00:08:14.92\00:08:18.76 And then we kept on moving, sharing the love of God, 00:08:18.79\00:08:24.50 and then, we forget this tribal conflict, 00:08:24.53\00:08:30.51 tribal differences in the camp. 00:08:30.54\00:08:32.91 And that is why our membership went to that extent. 00:08:32.94\00:08:36.68 Thank you. 00:08:36.71\00:08:38.05 Pastor Joseph, thank you. 00:08:38.08\00:08:39.61 You are a true peacemaker. Thank you. 00:08:39.65\00:08:42.35 And we just praise the Lord for your work 00:08:42.38\00:08:44.79 there in the refugee camp. 00:08:44.82\00:08:46.39 God bless you. 00:08:46.42\00:08:47.76 And we'll send it back to you now, Gary. 00:08:47.79\00:08:51.26 In Acts of the Apostles, Ellen White wrote, 00:08:51.29\00:08:53.56 "From the blood of the martyrs has sprung 00:08:53.60\00:08:55.90 an abundant harvest for God." 00:08:55.93\00:08:58.47 In our next video, we pay tribute to those missionaries, 00:08:58.50\00:09:02.37 who have sacrificed their lives for Jesus. 00:09:02.40\00:09:09.38 I realized words like "Rogue" and "Missionary" 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.98 don't seem like they should go together. 00:09:13.01\00:09:15.75 But Michael Czechowski was like Indiana Jones or Han Solo. 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.29 He was and I quote, 00:09:19.32\00:09:21.02 "A stubborn, impetuous man 00:09:21.06\00:09:22.59 who refused to take advice from Ellen White. 00:09:22.62\00:09:26.39 History gives us a sense that he was a charismatic swindler. 00:09:26.43\00:09:29.66 Yet without him, many Adventists 00:09:29.70\00:09:31.63 would've gone on believing 00:09:31.67\00:09:33.00 what the Review and Herald printed in 1869. 00:09:33.03\00:09:36.17 Quote, "It may not be necessary to preach the gospel 00:09:36.20\00:09:39.34 in any country besides our own," 00:09:39.37\00:09:41.28 since our land is composed of people 00:09:41.31\00:09:42.94 from almost every nation." 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.88 "If we reach the immigrants within the US, 00:09:46.11\00:09:48.18 they'll witness to their friends 00:09:48.22\00:09:49.55 and families overseas, 00:09:49.58\00:09:50.95 a great commission will fulfill itself." 00:09:50.99\00:09:54.36 The churches first big push 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.06 for foreign missions came in 1871, 00:09:56.09\00:09:58.76 when GC delegates voted to send J.G. Matteson 00:09:58.79\00:10:01.60 to witness to the Scandinavians and Danes of Wisconsin. 00:10:01.63\00:10:07.04 Czechowski however was no Millerite. 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.67 He was an ex-Catholic Polish priest 00:10:09.70\00:10:11.87 turned obsessive sabbatarian. 00:10:11.91\00:10:14.11 He was young, idealistic, 00:10:14.14\00:10:16.04 fluent in seven or eight languages, 00:10:16.08\00:10:17.91 and terrible with money. 00:10:17.95\00:10:20.05 James and Ellen White 00:10:20.08\00:10:21.42 were so besotted by his personality, 00:10:21.45\00:10:23.22 that they helped him pay all his debts 00:10:23.25\00:10:25.25 and funded his travel from Battle Creek 00:10:25.29\00:10:27.02 back to New York. 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.79 Later, Ellen would receive a vision telling her 00:10:28.82\00:10:30.93 to stop supporting him. 00:10:30.96\00:10:33.03 Czechowski left awake of burnt bridges 00:10:33.06\00:10:35.13 and bad business deals behind him. 00:10:35.16\00:10:37.20 Though he hated taking advice, he didn't mind taking money. 00:10:37.23\00:10:40.87 So, when the SDA Church wouldn't support him 00:10:40.90\00:10:42.90 as a missionary to Europe, 00:10:42.94\00:10:44.31 he found another denomination that would. 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.57 Czechowski used their money 00:10:46.61\00:10:47.94 to share Adventist's beliefs in Switzerland. 00:10:47.98\00:10:50.95 However, he failed to inform the Swiss congregation 00:10:50.98\00:10:53.55 of the Home church America. 00:10:53.58\00:10:55.52 It wasn't until a church elder found a copy of the Review 00:10:55.55\00:10:58.22 and Herald that Czechowski secret came out. 00:10:58.25\00:11:01.32 The congregation was shocked. 00:11:01.36\00:11:03.53 Naturally, their trust was bruised. 00:11:03.56\00:11:05.93 The Swiss leaders wrote to the GC 00:11:05.96\00:11:07.66 asking for a replacement missionary. 00:11:07.70\00:11:10.17 Adventist historian David Trim writes. 00:11:10.20\00:11:13.34 Adventists in America were actually 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.10 sort of embarrassed to learn 00:11:15.14\00:11:16.47 that there were already Adventist believers in Europe. 00:11:16.50\00:11:20.28 The Americans invited the Swiss Adventists 00:11:20.31\00:11:22.14 to send a delegate to the 1869 GC session. 00:11:22.18\00:11:25.98 Though he arrived too late for the session, 00:11:26.01\00:11:28.12 he stayed long enough to return as an ordained minister. 00:11:28.15\00:11:31.82 Elsewhere, Czechowski's tactics finally caught up to him. 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.89 His bankroll was revoked. 00:11:34.92\00:11:36.83 Disgraced, he left his family and moved to Hungary 00:11:36.86\00:11:40.00 where he would later die at 57, reportedly from exhaustion. 00:11:40.03\00:11:44.87 But the Swiss church still sought a missionary. 00:11:44.90\00:11:47.64 And that is how John Nevins Andrews 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.47 became the first official Seventh-day Adventist 00:11:49.50\00:11:51.47 missionary to Europe as a replacement 00:11:51.51\00:11:53.84 for the rogue missionary. 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.01 The spirit of spreading the Three Angels' Message 00:11:56.04\00:11:58.01 began to intensify within 00:11:58.05\00:11:59.38 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:11:59.41\00:12:01.92 Even J. G. Matteson got to move on 00:12:01.95\00:12:03.85 from the wilds of Wisconsin to his home country at Denmark. 00:12:03.89\00:12:07.32 His work would lead 00:12:07.36\00:12:08.69 to the first international Adventist conference, 00:12:08.72\00:12:10.86 the Scandinavian Publishing House 00:12:10.89\00:12:13.19 and Matteson institute in Mysen, Norway. 00:12:13.23\00:12:16.67 The American Adventist Church 00:12:16.70\00:12:18.03 was beginning to catch a glimpse of the possibilities. 00:12:18.07\00:12:20.57 The gospel preached to every nation, 00:12:20.60\00:12:22.80 kindred, tongue, and people. 00:12:22.84\00:12:25.51 A world church, but we still lack the key component. 00:12:25.54\00:12:32.51 Well, thank so much for joining us 00:12:40.76\00:12:42.09 on today's program 00:12:42.12\00:12:43.63 and I hope that you've been challenged 00:12:43.66\00:12:45.89 and inspired by what you've seen and heard. 00:12:45.93\00:12:49.20 As we traced back to throughout history, 00:12:49.23\00:12:51.53 we see people such as Martin Luther 00:12:51.57\00:12:54.20 who have stood faithful, 00:12:54.24\00:12:55.67 and have risked their lives for the cause of the gospel. 00:12:55.70\00:12:58.97 And today, we have seen 00:12:59.01\00:13:00.34 that so many people around the world today 00:13:00.38\00:13:02.11 are on the frontlines of mission. 00:13:02.14\00:13:04.28 And thank you for your continuing prayerful 00:13:04.31\00:13:06.41 support for these people. 00:13:06.45\00:13:08.28 And thank you for your financial support 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.62 and your personal involvement. 00:13:10.65\00:13:13.25 Today, I would like to give you a special free offer, 00:13:13.29\00:13:16.09 it's the faces of mission calendar 00:13:16.12\00:13:18.46 from Global mission. 00:13:18.49\00:13:19.83 And in this calendar, 00:13:19.86\00:13:21.20 you'll find daily reminders of mission around the world, 00:13:21.23\00:13:24.30 give you something to pray for 00:13:24.33\00:13:25.83 as you remember frontline mission workers. 00:13:25.87\00:13:28.64 Well, that's about it for today's program, 00:13:28.67\00:13:30.71 and I hope that you can join me next time right here 00:13:30.74\00:13:33.38 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:13:33.41\00:13:35.48
