00:11 When Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses
00:14 to the church door in Wittenberg,
00:16 he came here to Heidelberg for a formal disputation.
00:21 There were hopes that he will be silenced.
00:23 But instead, he watered the seeds
00:25 for the Protestant Reformation.
00:27 On today's program, we'll walk the streets
00:30 that Martin Luther walked.
00:31 But more importantly, we will be seeing his message,
00:35 the gospel message spread throughout the world.
00:42 Just before He went up to heaven,
00:45 Jesus gave us a command.
00:48 He gave us a mission.
00:50 Jesus said "Go,
00:53 go unto all the world telling them of His love."
00:58 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission.
01:07 Hello, I'm Gary Krause,
01:09 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots,
01:11 coming to you today from the historic
01:13 and the beautiful city of Heidelberg, Germany.
01:17 In this city, so many things
01:19 have happened through the years.
01:20 But my favorite story is the story of Martin Luther,
01:23 and of course the Protestant Reformation
01:26 that played an important role in this city.
01:29 Martin Luther was not a perfect man.
01:31 But he took God's words seriously
01:33 and he was prepared to lay his life
01:35 on the line because of it.
01:37 And today, the rays of truth
01:39 that spread from the Protestant Reformation
01:42 are still going out to the ends of the earth,
01:45 even to Papua New Guinea
01:47 where we're going next for our first story.
01:57 My biggest aim is to help people change their live
02:01 economically, socially, and spiritually
02:04 so they're ready when the Lord comes.
02:07 In Papua New Guinea, villagers depend on growing crops
02:11 and raising animals as a source of income.
02:13 They will often find
02:15 that there is not much income to live on.
02:17 A lot of the younger working generation
02:19 decide to move to the cities
02:20 to find better paying job opportunities
02:23 leaving the older generation to work in the villages.
02:27 Adventist church member, Brother John,
02:29 takes it upon himself to visit villages
02:32 and educate them on how they can thrive
02:34 in the village environment.
02:35 He studied agriculture
02:37 at a prestigious agricultural school in Japan.
02:41 He teaches them how to maximize their earnings
02:43 by sharing his formal education with them.
02:48 Some people get on me and say things like,
02:50 "You shouldn't give away a free service.
02:52 They should pay you for what you are giving them."
02:55 But when I hear that, I ask them,
02:57 "Did you pay for my school fee?
02:59 It is up to me how I use my knowledge to help others."
03:04 Brother John usually visits villages
03:06 with Adventist members as a gateway into the village.
03:09 And then welcomes everyone
03:11 in the village to join the lesson.
03:14 His visits begin with prayer and a short Bible lesson.
03:17 He teaches them practical skills
03:19 about how to do things
03:20 like how to make your own chicken feed,
03:22 or the best way to grow their crops.
03:28 The villagers get a hands-on demonstration
03:30 of how to perform the farming techniques.
03:41 These tangible skills allow the villagers
03:43 to earn more money
03:44 and improve the quality of their lives.
03:47 Brother John explains how their jobs
03:48 are very important to the country's economy.
03:52 With this knowledge,
03:53 the villagers feel more confident
03:55 and excited about doing their jobs.
03:58 That's why I am so happy that I can be involved
04:01 and go places to train others.
04:03 When they're satisfied, I'm satisfied.
04:06 Brother John's approach not only encourages
04:09 the church members in the village,
04:10 but also shows others that he cares about them.
04:13 He is doing his best to follow the example
04:16 Christ modeled for us when He was on the earth.
04:19 Through this ministry,
04:20 many people have felt the love of Jesus.
04:23 The churches are growing in the villages
04:25 that Brother John has visited.
04:27 Since the villagers are making more money
04:29 by using Brother John's farming techniques,
04:31 church members are also giving
04:33 more to support their church and mission offerings.
04:37 I have realized that the tithes
04:38 and offerings have gone up in all the districts.
04:42 Please pray for Brother John
04:44 as he continues to volunteer his time to share his knowledge
04:47 with the villagers of Papua New Guinea.
04:50 Pray that he can continue to model Christ method
04:52 and spread the message of Jesus.
04:55 Thank you for supporting mission.
05:03 My guest is Pastor Corrado Cozzi,
05:05 who is the communication director
05:07 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church
05:09 in the Inter-European region.
05:11 Corrado, thanks for joining us.
05:13 Prego. Okay, thank you.
05:14 You are from Italy originally and your area of influence
05:20 now is how many countries here in Europe?
05:23 We have particularly all the south of Europe,
05:26 part of the west, and part of the east.
05:29 So, from Bulgaria, that is in the east,
05:32 the Romania, Czech and Slovakia.
05:34 We have Germany, Austria, Switzerland,
05:38 Italy, France, Germany I say, and Spain, and Portugal,
05:42 and the islands here around.
05:44 So you have all these different territories
05:46 with different histories,
05:48 different languages, different cultures.
05:50 How do you put together a communication strategy
05:53 for such diverse region?
05:58 You see, which is my Italian name, my Italian language.
06:01 So, the challenge is the language.
06:04 We have to understand each other.
06:06 But really, today, to say that the language
06:08 is an obstacle is not correct
06:11 because all of us can speak English.
06:13 Maybe you can understand that my English is not correct,
06:16 but we try to do our best
06:18 just to be in contact each other.
06:20 So first obstacle could be the language,
06:23 and of course we can overcome this, trying to understand,
06:29 to learn also different languages.
06:30 You know, most of us speaks three, four languages
06:34 in order to be, to say understand
06:36 about these international context.
06:38 But the second is their culture.
06:40 Okay, we have to understand not only that word,
06:43 but also how to be with people that are living
06:46 in a different background, different culture.
06:49 They needs a different team leader
06:52 because we are in Europe, of course, but different
06:55 and we have to be ready to give an answer.
06:57 Yes, now, when you talk about spiritual things,
07:00 Christian things, Adventist things,
07:04 your audience come
07:06 is increasingly a secular audience,
07:08 a non-church attending audience.
07:11 How do you make the Christian message
07:15 understandable to these people?
07:17 You know, we have this good facilities
07:20 or good possibility or opportunity with the media.
07:23 Okay?
07:24 Website, application, internet is helping us
07:29 just to share the message in a way
07:33 that this could be understandable.
07:36 Today, the people don't listen with the ear,
07:40 they listen with their eyes, so they need the images.
07:43 So, we can share some messages that are really deep message
07:48 regarding the Bible, regarding Christianity,
07:51 regarding the spiritual things.
07:52 And then we can share
07:54 with the help of these tools that can,
07:57 and some times, simplify also the meaning of this message.
08:04 Of course, of course, we are in a place
08:08 that you have not only one kind of religion.
08:11 So, and you, you have to know
08:14 the different religion that where you are living.
08:16 So to be, to say tolerant, to be respectful,
08:23 to know the thinking of the others,
08:26 and to try to speak the same language.
08:28 Yes, yeah.
08:30 Now, you also have Hope channel here in Europe.
08:33 What sort of programming do you put on the Hope channel?
08:37 Normally, we have two big chain of channel.
08:42 So, we have German Hope channel and Romanian Hope channel
08:46 that are broadcasting daily.
08:48 And let's say, almost all the day.
08:51 So normally, the program that we are trying
08:54 to broadcast are linked or related with panel,
09:01 let's say discussion around a topic that is very important,
09:05 trying to understand what the society
09:07 would like to know regarding some topic
09:10 that is very hot potato, homosexuality, immigrants now,
09:16 the question of, of course the crisis,
09:18 the financial crisis.
09:20 So, and we try to give some answer,
09:22 trying to present our opinion, and mixing this opinion
09:27 with also some messages coming from the Bible,
09:30 which suggestion or which supports,
09:34 built a support that Bible can give today.
09:37 And we have to use the language of today,
09:39 but based on the Bible.
09:43 Right, so to show how the Bible
09:45 can be applied to practical situations.
09:47 Exactly, exactly.
09:49 Now, I understand that the Hope channel
09:50 in Romania is a very popular channel.
09:53 Can you describe the influence it has in Romania?
09:56 Yeah, as the statistic said that the Romanian Hope channel
10:00 is the fourth national rating channel or TV station
10:06 that they have in Romania.
10:07 Number four? Number four.
10:09 It's very popular, why?
10:11 Because they use to present, really to say,
10:17 the answer of the real need of the society.
10:19 So they call people on the studio,
10:24 people from the society, some political people,
10:28 or other people that come from different sectors
10:31 that can give an opinion, an answer,
10:35 sharing of course, this opinion, this answer
10:38 in the way that the people can understand really
10:42 what is the problem, how to solve the problem.
10:44 Of course, there are programs that are strictly linked
10:49 with spirituality message coming from the Bible.
10:52 And the Romania people like this,
10:54 they like this, they like to receive the truth.
10:57 So to be authentic when the message
11:00 or when the speech is presented,
11:02 to be authentic and they accept.
11:04 Wonderful, what are your hopes,
11:07 Corrado, for communication in this region?
11:11 As we said before,
11:13 we are in a very interesting region.
11:15 Europe is diversified,
11:17 is divided by culture, languages,
11:21 but united by the same goal, okay?
11:25 Where every people would like to receive
11:28 the same answer to their needs, their basic needs.
11:31 So, communication is trying to respect
11:36 the possibility to give this answer
11:39 using the best the tools that we have.
11:42 So, we cannot close the eyes before the new possibility.
11:46 So, it's not only TVs, it's not only radio,
11:49 it's internet, it's the application.
11:51 There is smart TV today.
11:53 Today, the people use the smart phone, for what?
11:56 For everything.
11:57 We should talk through the smart phone.
12:00 So we are trying to arrive to use this tools
12:03 that the people use it normally,
12:06 and to pass the message
12:08 or might be what we like to share with them
12:10 through this internet and a little tool.
12:13 Wonderful.
12:14 Corrado, thank you for sharing with us today.
12:16 Thank you very much.
12:17 And we will be right back straight after this break.
