Yes. 00:00:48.58\00:00:49.91 Could you tell us 00:00:49.94\00:00:51.28 how did the vision for this radio station 97 Salvation FM, 00:00:51.31\00:00:57.19 how did it begin? 00:00:57.22\00:00:58.99 Well, the vision of this radio 00:00:59.02\00:01:00.76 has started with our retired pastor, 00:01:00.79\00:01:03.22 Pastor Fulgensio Okayo. 00:01:03.26\00:01:05.39 And he thought that it was good for the ministry 00:01:05.43\00:01:09.36 to be accomplished quicker 00:01:09.40\00:01:11.23 by having a radio station and television 00:01:11.27\00:01:15.67 at the same time. 00:01:15.70\00:01:17.07 But the government gave us a license 00:01:17.11\00:01:19.24 for the radio station until the radio is on, 00:01:19.27\00:01:22.28 then they can be able to give us 00:01:22.31\00:01:23.65 a television licence. 00:01:23.68\00:01:25.91 So this is how it all begun and he begun to actually 00:01:25.95\00:01:30.59 give these things from his family. 00:01:30.62\00:01:32.42 He start contributing from them, 00:01:32.45\00:01:33.99 bring it to the church 00:01:34.02\00:01:35.36 and the church board form a formal committee 00:01:35.39\00:01:37.59 that I am part of 00:01:37.63\00:01:40.00 and then to see the work continue to go ahead. 00:01:40.03\00:01:43.23 Now I heard something 00:01:43.26\00:01:44.60 about loud speakers on top of his house. 00:01:44.63\00:01:48.27 Could you tell me a little more about that? 00:01:48.30\00:01:50.11 Yeah, the time we begun, he was imitating 00:01:50.14\00:01:53.61 what Muslims were doing, 00:01:53.64\00:01:55.31 having horny speakers on their mosques 00:01:55.34\00:01:57.95 and they, every morning at 6 00:01:57.98\00:01:59.98 they begin to share a message 00:02:00.02\00:02:02.98 and people wake up and disturb people around, 00:02:03.02\00:02:06.05 sleep-- no sleep well. 00:02:06.09\00:02:07.69 So he also bought his loud speakers, 00:02:07.72\00:02:11.69 these horny speakers and put them on a tree 00:02:11.73\00:02:14.66 and then his room has become his broadcasting room 00:02:14.70\00:02:20.20 where he broadcast from, the living room. 00:02:20.24\00:02:22.74 And then many people listen early in the morning at 6. 00:02:22.77\00:02:25.77 They wake up to listen to the message. 00:02:25.81\00:02:28.31 And from there, that's when he began to think 00:02:28.34\00:02:30.85 we need to develop this 00:02:30.88\00:02:32.35 just more than this horny speakers a home 00:02:32.38\00:02:35.62 to add frequency and go wider. 00:02:35.65\00:02:39.55 And so now you have gone wider 00:02:39.59\00:02:42.26 and how is the community here in South Sudan. 00:02:42.29\00:02:45.39 How they reacted to Salvation FM radio? 00:02:45.43\00:02:49.36 Well, the community are very much blessed 00:02:49.40\00:02:51.73 and it is the only radio station 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.64 that gives a pure, clean music, music, 00:02:53.67\00:02:58.07 Christian music, not mixed with any other secular music 00:02:58.11\00:03:01.88 and they also give 00:03:01.91\00:03:03.95 a spiritual messages that builds people 00:03:03.98\00:03:10.52 and give hope and family life and health. 00:03:10.55\00:03:14.86 All these messages, 00:03:14.89\00:03:16.39 you can't get them in the other radio station. 00:03:16.42\00:03:18.79 That's why we became very much popular in the country. 00:03:18.83\00:03:22.06 And can you tell us about some of the feedback, 00:03:22.10\00:03:24.60 some of the reactions 00:03:24.63\00:03:25.97 that you have heard of community people 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.70 who have listened to the radio station and what, 00:03:28.74\00:03:31.44 how that it has changed their lives? 00:03:31.47\00:03:33.78 Well, some of them have been hearing to this message 00:03:33.81\00:03:38.45 and some of them came to the radio 00:03:38.48\00:03:41.35 and get some counsels for their marriages that are broken. 00:03:41.38\00:03:46.09 Some of them, they are being prayed for, 00:03:46.12\00:03:48.42 it was long time they are not giving birth. 00:03:48.46\00:03:51.06 Like a woman have been 17 years but after being prayed for, 00:03:51.09\00:03:55.33 she came with the child to the church 00:03:55.36\00:03:56.93 to be dedicate it. 00:03:56.97\00:03:58.87 And we have one presenter now working with us 00:03:58.90\00:04:04.11 who also came through the radio and got baptized 00:04:04.14\00:04:07.64 and now we trained him 00:04:07.68\00:04:09.44 and he got his certificate from AWR 00:04:09.48\00:04:11.98 and now he is working here with us 00:04:12.01\00:04:14.78 in then program for the youth. 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.58 And so we are very much blessed 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.72 with what the radio is doing to the community. 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.76 Most of them even like our international program 00:04:21.79\00:04:24.19 which we relate from Hope Channel directly. 00:04:24.23\00:04:27.10 And these programs are programs for Mark Finley, 00:04:27.13\00:04:31.80 programs that are for Sabbath school, 00:04:31.83\00:04:34.77 Hope Sabbath School 00:04:34.80\00:04:36.14 and programs also for Elder Douglas. 00:04:36.17\00:04:40.28 These programs, people like them so much. 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.44 And they always attend to these programs 00:04:42.48\00:04:44.78 and some preachings 00:04:44.81\00:04:46.15 that are coming from Hope Channel. 00:04:46.18\00:04:47.92 We have that slot in our radio. 00:04:47.95\00:04:50.12 Fantastic. 00:04:50.15\00:04:51.52 Now this radio station 00:04:51.55\00:04:53.22 that started in this pastor's home 00:04:53.25\00:04:56.39 with loud speakers in the trees. 00:04:56.42\00:05:00.23 I see you are no longer broadcasting from the trees 00:05:00.26\00:05:04.13 but from this lovely building. 00:05:04.17\00:05:06.63 Could you tell us a little bit about what this is 00:05:06.67\00:05:09.97 and how you've transformed it? 00:05:10.01\00:05:12.24 Well, this shipping container, we, 00:05:12.27\00:05:16.01 our former chair person Pastor Clement, 00:05:16.04\00:05:18.85 when he was a associate country director for ADRA. 00:05:18.88\00:05:21.98 So he requested from ADRA 00:05:22.02\00:05:24.85 so that we can be able to start to begin. 00:05:24.89\00:05:27.56 It was hard to collect money, the same time to get frequency, 00:05:27.59\00:05:30.99 to get equipments from US based company 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.43 and then to build a house for a radio. 00:05:34.46\00:05:40.04 So we just thought we can be able 00:05:40.07\00:05:41.80 to start with this container, fabricate it into three rooms. 00:05:41.84\00:05:46.47 We have the control room where all the machines 00:05:46.51\00:05:48.94 and there a controller sits 00:05:48.98\00:05:51.05 and then we have an on air studio 00:05:51.08\00:05:53.35 which is in the middle 00:05:53.38\00:05:54.72 and then we have a reception slot for reception 00:05:54.75\00:05:58.99 to cause our guests that will come 00:05:59.02\00:06:01.16 before they go to their time for their studio. 00:06:01.19\00:06:03.69 So we had to paint it 00:06:03.73\00:06:06.33 and it has to communicate to itself by-- 00:06:06.36\00:06:10.03 when somebody comes here, 00:06:10.07\00:06:11.40 he knows this is 94.0 Salvation FM, 00:06:11.43\00:06:14.80 the voice of hope and they contact all here. 00:06:14.84\00:06:18.27 So and then we had to put a roof 00:06:18.31\00:06:20.84 because this is a container. 00:06:20.88\00:06:22.64 Somehow this roof reduces 00:06:22.68\00:06:24.48 the level of heat that also comes in. 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.95 So this roof, we have put here 00:06:27.98\00:06:30.22 so that we can be able to at least see that 00:06:30.25\00:06:34.62 it's a bit cooler and then they AC. 00:06:34.66\00:06:37.03 We have put ACs 00:06:37.06\00:06:38.59 and to put also the sound proof inside 00:06:38.63\00:06:41.56 so the room is, the temperature is very cold as in here, 00:06:41.60\00:06:45.63 anywhere, any building. 00:06:45.67\00:06:47.40 So how creative. 00:06:47.44\00:06:49.00 You take a shipping container and you transform it 00:06:49.04\00:06:53.74 into a wonderful radio station for Salvation, Salvation FM. 00:06:53.78\00:06:59.61 You've painted, you've put your information, 00:06:59.65\00:07:02.52 a roof over it and you are ready to go. 00:07:02.55\00:07:04.92 Yes. 00:07:04.95\00:07:06.29 And then on date, by the 12th of, 00:07:06.32\00:07:11.59 the 1st of December 2012, 00:07:11.63\00:07:16.16 that's the day that we went on air. 00:07:16.20\00:07:18.80 Okay. Yeah. 00:07:18.83\00:07:20.17 And each year we celebrate because of what God has done 00:07:20.20\00:07:24.77 through all of us in the ministry. 00:07:24.81\00:07:26.14 Dominic, thank you so much for being with us 00:07:26.17\00:07:29.48 and for sharing what you're doing 00:07:29.51\00:07:30.98 here in South Sudan. 00:07:31.01\00:07:32.35 Amen. Thank you. 00:07:32.38\00:07:33.72 And it's been a privilege 00:07:33.75\00:07:35.32 and I bounce it now back to you, Gary. 00:07:35.35\00:07:39.15 Thanks, Gina. 00:07:39.19\00:07:40.52 As you can see mission is on the move through print, 00:07:40.56\00:07:43.22 radio, television and so many other means. 00:07:43.26\00:07:47.16 Our last stop on today's program 00:07:47.20\00:07:49.03 is the country of Switzerland, the place where 00:07:49.06\00:07:51.63 the first official Seventh-day Adventist missionary, 00:07:51.67\00:07:55.27 Pastor J.N. Andrews was sent. 00:07:55.30\00:07:57.77 I realize words like rogue and missionary 00:08:04.08\00:08:06.21 don't seem like they should go together. 00:08:06.25\00:08:08.95 But Michael Czechowski was like Indiana Jones or Han Solo. 00:08:08.98\00:08:12.49 He was, "a stubborn, impetuous man 00:08:12.52\00:08:15.86 who refused to take advice from Ellen White." 00:08:15.89\00:08:19.59 History gives us the sense 00:08:19.63\00:08:20.96 that he was a charismatic swindler. 00:08:21.00\00:08:22.93 Yet, without him, 00:08:22.96\00:08:24.30 many Adventists would have gone on believing 00:08:24.33\00:08:25.83 what the Review and Herald printed in 1869. 00:08:25.87\00:08:30.37 "It may not be necessary to preach the gospel 00:08:30.41\00:08:32.47 in any country besides our own. 00:08:32.51\00:08:34.54 Since our land is composed of people 00:08:34.58\00:08:36.24 from almost every nation." 00:08:36.28\00:08:39.45 If we reach the immigrants within the US, 00:08:39.48\00:08:41.38 they'll witness to their friends 00:08:41.42\00:08:42.75 and families overseas, 00:08:42.78\00:08:44.19 the Great Commission will fulfill itself. 00:08:44.22\00:08:47.59 The church's first big push 00:08:47.62\00:08:49.26 for foreign missions came in 1871 00:08:49.29\00:08:51.83 when GC delegates voted to send J.G. Matteson 00:08:51.86\00:08:54.70 to witness to the Scandinavians and Danes of Wisconsin. 00:08:54.73\00:09:00.34 Czechowski, however, was no Millerite. 00:09:00.37\00:09:02.90 He was an ex-Catholic Polish priest 00:09:02.94\00:09:05.11 turned obsessive Sabbatarian. 00:09:05.14\00:09:07.34 He was young, idealistic, 00:09:07.38\00:09:09.31 fluent in seven or eight languages 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.11 and terrible with money. 00:09:11.15\00:09:13.31 James and Ellen White were so besotted by his personality 00:09:13.35\00:09:16.52 that they helped him pay all his debts 00:09:16.55\00:09:18.52 and funded his travel from Battle Creek back to New York. 00:09:18.55\00:09:21.92 Later, Ellen would receive a vision 00:09:21.96\00:09:23.73 telling her to stop supporting him. 00:09:23.76\00:09:26.33 Czechowski left a wake of burned bridges 00:09:26.36\00:09:28.33 and bad business deals behind him. 00:09:28.36\00:09:30.33 Though he hated taking advise, he didn't mind taking money. 00:09:30.37\00:09:34.04 So when the SDA church wouldn't support him 00:09:34.07\00:09:36.07 as a missionary to Europe, 00:09:36.10\00:09:37.54 he found another denomination that would. 00:09:37.57\00:09:39.81 Czechowski used their money 00:09:39.84\00:09:41.18 to share Adventist's beliefs in Switzerland. 00:09:41.21\00:09:44.11 However, he failed to inform 00:09:44.15\00:09:45.51 the Swiss congregation of the home church in America. 00:09:45.55\00:09:48.72 It wasn't until a church elder 00:09:48.75\00:09:50.22 found a copy of the Review and Herald 00:09:50.25\00:09:51.85 that Czechowski's secret came out. 00:09:51.89\00:09:54.62 The congregation was shocked. 00:09:54.66\00:09:56.86 Naturally, their trust was bruised. 00:09:56.89\00:09:59.09 The Swiss leaders wrote to the GC 00:09:59.13\00:10:00.76 asking for a replacement missionary. 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.40 Adventist historian David Trim writes, 00:10:03.43\00:10:06.53 "Adventists in America were actually 00:10:06.57\00:10:08.37 sort of embarrassed to learn 00:10:08.40\00:10:09.74 that there were already Adventist believers in Europe." 00:10:09.77\00:10:13.38 The Americans invited the Swiss Adventist 00:10:13.41\00:10:15.41 to send a delegate to the 1869 GC Session. 00:10:15.44\00:10:19.25 Though he arrived too late for the session, 00:10:19.28\00:10:21.32 he stayed long enough to return as an ordained minister. 00:10:21.35\00:10:25.05 Elsewhere, Czechowski's tactics finally caught up to him. 00:10:25.09\00:10:28.09 His bank roll was revoked. 00:10:28.12\00:10:30.03 Disgraced, he left his family and moved to Hungary 00:10:30.06\00:10:33.19 where he would later die at 57 reportedly from exhaustion. 00:10:33.23\00:10:38.00 But the Swiss church still sort a missionary. 00:10:38.03\00:10:40.90 And that is how John Nevins Andrews 00:10:40.94\00:10:42.60 became the first official 00:10:42.64\00:10:43.97 Seventh-day Adventist missionary to Europe 00:10:44.01\00:10:46.34 as a replacement for the rogue missionary. 00:10:46.37\00:10:49.18 The spirit of spreading the three angels' message 00:10:49.21\00:10:51.21 began to intensify 00:10:51.25\00:10:52.58 within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:10:52.61\00:10:55.08 Even J.G. Matteson got to move on 00:10:55.12\00:10:57.02 from the wilds of Wisconsin to his home country of Denmark. 00:10:57.05\00:11:00.42 His work would lead 00:11:00.46\00:11:01.79 to the first international Adventist Conference, 00:11:01.82\00:11:04.03 the Scandinavian Publishing House 00:11:04.06\00:11:06.36 and Mattson Institute in Mysen, Norway. 00:11:06.39\00:11:09.83 The American Adventist Church was beginning 00:11:09.86\00:11:11.63 to catch a glimpse of the possibilities, 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.84 the gospel preached to every nation, 00:11:13.87\00:11:16.07 kindred, tongue and people, a world church. 00:11:16.10\00:11:20.78 But we still lacked a key component. 00:11:20.81\00:11:22.84 Well, thank you so much for joining us 00:11:33.59\00:11:34.92 on today's program 00:11:34.96\00:11:36.29 and I hope that you've been inspired and challenged 00:11:36.32\00:11:39.06 about what you've seen and heard. 00:11:39.09\00:11:40.96 Here in Mainz, Germany, 00:11:41.00\00:11:42.90 we see the tremendous history going right back to Gutenberg 00:11:42.93\00:11:47.47 and his printing press and it reminds us 00:11:47.50\00:11:49.54 of the importance of media of communication. 00:11:49.57\00:11:52.87 And we're bringing this as far as South Sudan 00:11:52.91\00:11:54.98 and various places of the globe where the good news 00:11:55.01\00:11:58.41 about Jesus Christ is being shared in very creative ways. 00:11:58.45\00:12:02.22 And thank you so much for your continuing support of mission, 00:12:02.25\00:12:06.09 through your prayers, through your personal finances 00:12:06.12\00:12:09.06 and through your own involvement. 00:12:09.09\00:12:11.59 Before we go, you may have been wondering 00:12:11.63\00:12:13.56 what I am holding in my hands here. 00:12:13.60\00:12:15.20 Well, these are chopsticks. 00:12:15.23\00:12:16.93 And I'd like to send you a pair. 00:12:16.97\00:12:19.30 These are not expensive but a little reminder of Mission 00:12:19.33\00:12:22.64 and so next time you're eating a tofu 00:12:22.67\00:12:25.11 or stir-fried vegetables or whatever, 00:12:25.14\00:12:27.01 you can remember Mission. 00:12:27.04\00:12:28.98 It has the Adventist Mission website 00:12:29.01\00:12:30.85 on it too to remind you. 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.21 Thank you so much for joining us 00:12:32.25\00:12:33.58 on today's program. 00:12:33.62\00:12:34.95 And I hope that you can join us next time right here 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.72 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:12:37.75\00:12:39.42
