of the challenges

work in this region?

biggest things most...

On the Indonesian
side of the border

of the Island of New
Guinea, there're 256 languages.

So when the Tower
of Babel happened,

I think a lot of the
people came here, so...

So you have probably preached

where it's been
translated two or three times.

Yes, sometimes literally,

to whatever the

Now you were telling me a story

you had some
communication difficulties.

Yes, yeah, so recently
I was on the South coast

about an hour south from here,

and our Global pioneer
had been in one village,

for almost a
year, he's 10 months.

And we had no way to
send communication to him.

And so I said, how in the world,

I really want to get
acquainted with him again,

and see how things
are going after 10 months.

And so we dreamed and
prayed, and how can we do this?

And I was dropping
another Global pioneer

and I said to him,
Melthy, we need to pray.

We've got to pray that God
will work out something for us.

So we prayed,

we found a place to stay
for the night in the village

where the Global
pioneer was being dropped.

And then I said,

"Let's go find the
restaurant where we can go eat."

As we were coming to
town, the restaurant...

We were getting closer,
all of a sudden I saw this man,

a bearded man,
start running beside me,

along with our
motorcycle and said,

"Pastor, stop, stop, stop!"

Who was this
guy? Yeah, who is he?

And I looked at him for a
while and I said, "Who is he?"

Oh, yeah, that's
our Global pioneer.

He'd grown a big
beard in 10 months.

The amazing thing
is when we had prayed

God had given him
a dream in the night

that he needed to
come to our village.

So he came.

And he had just arrived.

Actually, he
had denied the call,

he kept hearing that call,

he denied the
call, all morning long,

but he finally said
to his wife, "I'm going."

When he woke up, the
reason he didn't come was

there was big
waves on the river.

But finally, the
impression became so strong

that he came anyway.

And so he, he came to us,

to our village, we're sitting
on the side of the road praying

when we passed in front

and amazingly how
we were right there

at the time that
he had just prayed.

God answered, He did
the communication for us.

So there are
communication difficulties,

but there are other ways
around it when God's in control.

You know, we're here not
far from Papua New Guinea

and not long ago I was in Japan

and there was somebody from
Papua New Guinea working there,

People go, missionaries go from
everywhere to everywhere today,

but you've come a
long way from America here,

what motivates you to
leave home and come out here?

Yeah, I was
pastoring for 17 years,

in Georgia and Tennessee.

And I had worked as
Adventist Mission Coordinator

similar to that of
evangelism coordinator

in the Chattanooga area
where Mark Finley had come.

And one day Mark called me
on the phone, Pastor Finley.

And he said, "Darren,
have you thought about

doing some
mission service sometime?"

And I said, "Well, yeah,

obviously I've gone
with you several times."

And he said, "Good, because
your name is on the list."

This place has a
great significance

for the history of
Protestants in general,

and also for us as
Seventh-Day Adventists.

Visitors to
Italy's Waldensian Valley

are struck by its
beautiful scenery.

But these beautiful valleys

are also a testament
to faith and courage.

More than a
century ago this is where

the Waldensian people
fled to escape persecution.

They setup a
missionary training school

and when
persecution followed them,

they hid in caves to worship.

These valleys also
played an important role

in Seventh-Day
Adventist history.

And it's also
significant place for us

'cause the baptism outside
of the United States of America

was done here in Torre Pellice.

The Waldenses believed that

it was their duty
to spread the gospel,

not keep it to themselves.

They wanted the
world to know God's message

despite the risks
that came with sharing it.

Today, as Christians

message of hope for the world

We're trying to rekindle
this faith in the Waldenses.

students of Bible prophecies,

so we're kind of trying
to awake them to the heritage

that was left to
them by their fathers.

Right now actually
we have a small church

about 30 people in attendance.

And the thing is that we don't
have an Adventist presence,

presence here in the valleys.

Basically all the members
come from outside the valleys,

except for three of us

who live in the
church buildings.

Members get together
often, but have to travel far

to attend church
or study together

is devoted to leading

small congregation.

here in the valley so,
