Welcome back. 00:00:09.37\00:00:10.71 Next up we travel to Indonesia, 00:00:10.74\00:00:12.57 where Rick Kajiura is talking with Darren Boyd. 00:00:12.61\00:00:15.81 Thank you. 00:00:15.84\00:00:17.18 We're here in the Highlands of Indonesia, 00:00:17.21\00:00:20.35 right close to the Papua New Guinea border, 00:00:20.38\00:00:22.95 and we flew in a short time ago, 00:00:22.98\00:00:25.15 and with me is Pastor Darren Boyd 00:00:25.19\00:00:27.12 who is the Adventist Mission Coordinator 00:00:27.16\00:00:29.19 in this part of the world. 00:00:29.22\00:00:31.16 And, Darren, it's really good to have you with us 00:00:31.19\00:00:34.00 or I guess I'm with you today, 00:00:34.03\00:00:35.50 because we flew in here this morning. 00:00:35.53\00:00:38.53 Right here we're sitting beside something 00:00:38.57\00:00:40.30 that wasn't here too many years ago. 00:00:40.34\00:00:42.17 Can you tell us what this is? 00:00:42.20\00:00:43.87 This is a church that was the dream of Bob Roberts, 00:00:43.91\00:00:47.94 our mission pilot that was here before. 00:00:47.98\00:00:50.98 And yeah, 00:00:51.01\00:00:54.02 so he kept flying here 00:00:54.05\00:00:55.75 with material for commercial flights, 00:00:55.78\00:00:59.15 and kept seeing this, some Adventist members 00:00:59.19\00:01:03.06 from P and G came across and said, 00:01:03.09\00:01:05.19 "Why don't we have a church there?" 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.26 And so he began the process of building this here. 00:01:07.30\00:01:12.40 Not he himself, 00:01:12.43\00:01:13.77 but he hired some people to do it. 00:01:13.80\00:01:15.50 Those his vision and dreams. Yes. 00:01:15.54\00:01:17.34 And one of the things about anything that's up here is 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.91 you can't just walk down the street 00:01:20.94\00:01:22.38 and buy whatever you need. 00:01:22.41\00:01:24.28 Absolutely. 00:01:24.31\00:01:25.65 So, how does everything get here? 00:01:25.68\00:01:27.02 What does it take to build a church up here? 00:01:27.05\00:01:29.08 Yeah, nothing is easy. 00:01:29.12\00:01:30.45 Everything has to be created from something. 00:01:30.49\00:01:33.76 So all the wood that we have here is cut with the chainsaw, 00:01:33.79\00:01:38.13 a 36-inch bar chainsaw, three meters. 00:01:38.16\00:01:43.50 And then it's walked here probably a lot of this wood is 00:01:43.53\00:01:47.70 cut from two days walk away, so... 00:01:47.74\00:01:50.74 So then they have to carry it all... 00:01:50.77\00:01:52.31 By hand... Up the mountain. 00:01:52.34\00:01:53.78 Yeah, it's quite expensive because you have to pay 00:01:53.81\00:01:55.81 to the carriers for that and then for the fuel, 00:01:55.84\00:02:00.72 all the fuel has to be filled in 00:02:00.75\00:02:02.28 just to cut the trees. 00:02:02.32\00:02:03.95 Cut the trees and then any roofing material... 00:02:03.99\00:02:06.86 Roofing, screws, the windows, 00:02:06.89\00:02:09.86 everything is flown in by planes 00:02:09.89\00:02:11.69 and many, many trips coming by. 00:02:11.73\00:02:13.80 And if they could see the runway 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.16 it's not like this, it's like this. 00:02:15.20\00:02:16.53 No, they're landing uphill. 00:02:16.56\00:02:17.90 So landing on a side of a mountain basically. 00:02:17.93\00:02:21.87 Now we have a Global Mission pioneer 00:02:21.90\00:02:24.87 who's working here. 00:02:24.91\00:02:26.24 Yes. He's been here how long? 00:02:26.27\00:02:29.78 Just three weeks. Just three weeks. 00:02:29.81\00:02:31.31 So he's getting used to it, 00:02:31.35\00:02:32.68 but we have wonderful hopes for the future of the working. 00:02:32.71\00:02:35.78 Actually before him our builder was here 00:02:35.82\00:02:37.95 and he has quite a bit of skills in that area 00:02:37.99\00:02:41.26 and so for the last year or so 00:02:41.29\00:02:43.63 the builder has been the primary leader here. 00:02:43.66\00:02:47.30 And he's, the builder's here right now as well, 00:02:47.33\00:02:49.23 he's just finishing up, the work project here, so... 00:02:49.26\00:02:52.60 Great, and we saw little damage from a windstorm, 00:02:52.63\00:02:54.80 and that needs to be repaired as well. 00:02:54.84\00:02:56.94 So what are some of the challenges 00:02:56.97\00:02:58.47 of doing mission work in this region? 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.61 Transportation and communication, 00:03:01.64\00:03:04.35 that's our two biggest things most... 00:03:04.38\00:03:08.08 On the Indonesian side of the border 00:03:08.12\00:03:10.29 of the Island of New Guinea, there're 256 languages. 00:03:10.32\00:03:15.92 So when the Tower of Babel happened, 00:03:15.96\00:03:18.43 I think a lot of the people came here, so... 00:03:18.46\00:03:24.40 So you have probably preached 00:03:24.43\00:03:25.77 where it's been translated two or three times. 00:03:25.80\00:03:27.94 Yes, sometimes literally, from English to Indonesian 00:03:27.97\00:03:32.14 to whatever the local language is, 00:03:32.17\00:03:34.01 and you lose some of the concepts. 00:03:34.04\00:03:36.21 So our Global pioneer is learning the language here, 00:03:36.24\00:03:39.58 he was proud to demonstrate it and learned about 00:03:39.61\00:03:42.68 25 or 30 words in the last three weeks, so... 00:03:42.72\00:03:45.55 Now you were telling me a story 00:03:45.59\00:03:48.12 about another plan in another village, 00:03:48.16\00:03:50.19 you had some communication difficulties. 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.09 Yes, yeah, so recently I was on the South coast 00:03:52.13\00:03:56.00 about an hour south from here, 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.60 and our Global pioneer had been in one village, 00:03:58.63\00:04:04.57 for almost a year, he's 10 months. 00:04:04.61\00:04:07.91 And we had no way to send communication to him. 00:04:07.94\00:04:12.21 And so I said, how in the world, 00:04:12.25\00:04:13.95 I really want to get acquainted with him again, 00:04:13.98\00:04:18.55 and see how things are going after 10 months. 00:04:18.59\00:04:23.36 And so we dreamed and prayed, and how can we do this? 00:04:23.39\00:04:27.73 And I was dropping another Global pioneer 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.70 and I said to him, Melthy, we need to pray. 00:04:30.73\00:04:35.04 We've got to pray that God will work out something for us. 00:04:35.07\00:04:38.57 So we prayed, 00:04:38.61\00:04:40.38 we found a place to stay for the night in the village 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.28 where the Global pioneer was being dropped. 00:04:43.31\00:04:47.32 And then I said, 00:04:47.35\00:04:48.75 "Let's go find the restaurant where we can go eat." 00:04:48.78\00:04:52.15 As we were coming to town, the restaurant... 00:04:52.19\00:04:58.06 We were getting closer, all of a sudden I saw this man, 00:04:58.09\00:05:00.90 a bearded man, start running beside me, 00:05:00.93\00:05:03.57 along with our motorcycle and said, 00:05:03.60\00:05:05.53 "Pastor, stop, stop, stop!" 00:05:05.57\00:05:08.77 Who was this guy? Yeah, who is he? 00:05:08.80\00:05:11.21 And I looked at him for a while and I said, "Who is he?" 00:05:11.24\00:05:14.41 Oh, yeah, that's our Global pioneer. 00:05:14.44\00:05:16.61 He'd grown a big beard in 10 months. 00:05:16.64\00:05:19.71 The amazing thing is when we had prayed 00:05:19.75\00:05:24.12 God had given him a dream in the night 00:05:24.15\00:05:26.79 that he needed to come to our village. 00:05:26.82\00:05:29.12 So he came. 00:05:29.16\00:05:31.06 And he had just arrived. 00:05:31.09\00:05:36.50 Actually, he had denied the call, 00:05:36.53\00:05:39.53 he kept hearing that call, 00:05:39.57\00:05:40.90 he denied the call, all morning long, 00:05:40.94\00:05:42.47 but he finally said to his wife, "I'm going." 00:05:42.50\00:05:44.37 When he woke up, the reason he didn't come was 00:05:44.41\00:05:46.78 there was big waves on the river. 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.88 But finally, the impression became so strong 00:05:48.91\00:05:51.08 that he came anyway. 00:05:51.11\00:05:52.91 And so he, he came to us, 00:05:52.95\00:06:00.09 to our village, we're sitting on the side of the road praying 00:06:00.12\00:06:03.29 when we passed in front 00:06:03.32\00:06:05.96 and amazingly how we were right there 00:06:05.99\00:06:11.07 at the time that he had just prayed. 00:06:11.10\00:06:13.47 God answered, He did the communication for us. 00:06:13.50\00:06:16.40 So there are communication difficulties, 00:06:16.44\00:06:18.27 but there are other ways around it when God's in control. 00:06:18.31\00:06:20.84 That's wonderful. 00:06:20.88\00:06:22.51 You know, we're here not far from Papua New Guinea 00:06:22.54\00:06:25.81 and not long ago I was in Japan 00:06:25.85\00:06:27.95 and there was somebody from Papua New Guinea working there, 00:06:27.98\00:06:30.29 an Adventist working there. 00:06:30.32\00:06:32.02 People go, missionaries go from everywhere to everywhere today, 00:06:32.05\00:06:35.46 but you've come a long way from America here, 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.73 what motivates you to leave home and come out here? 00:06:37.76\00:06:44.17 Yeah, I was pastoring for 17 years, 00:06:44.20\00:06:46.20 in Georgia and Tennessee. 00:06:46.23\00:06:51.27 And I had worked as Adventist Mission Coordinator 00:06:51.31\00:06:55.88 similar to that of evangelism coordinator 00:06:55.91\00:06:59.38 in the Chattanooga area where Mark Finley had come. 00:06:59.41\00:07:03.52 And one day Mark called me on the phone, Pastor Finley. 00:07:03.55\00:07:08.06 And he said, "Darren, have you thought about 00:07:08.09\00:07:11.93 doing some mission service sometime?" 00:07:11.96\00:07:15.00 And I said, "Well, yeah, 00:07:15.03\00:07:18.73 obviously I've gone with you several times." 00:07:18.77\00:07:22.00 And he said, "Good, because your name is on the list." 00:07:22.04\00:07:26.31 And so, here you are today, 00:07:26.34\00:07:27.98 because of that, your name was on the list. 00:07:28.01\00:07:30.81 Well, thank you, Darren, 00:07:30.85\00:07:32.18 it's been wonderful talking with you, 00:07:32.21\00:07:33.78 it's wonderful coming to visit some of these areas. 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.82 It's a beautiful area 00:07:35.85\00:07:37.19 and it's wonderful to see the challenges. 00:07:37.22\00:07:38.82 You guys said there at least 100 villages 00:07:38.85\00:07:41.19 that could still be have churches planted 00:07:41.22\00:07:42.82 and a whole lot more... 00:07:42.86\00:07:44.19 Oh, yeah, 60,000. 60,000, more than 100. 00:07:44.23\00:07:48.30 So thank you very much. And back to you. 00:07:48.33\00:07:51.70 Next up, we travel to Italy 00:07:51.73\00:07:54.00 and specifically to the Waldensian Valley 00:07:54.04\00:07:57.31 where a Global Mission pioneer 00:07:57.34\00:07:59.74 is starting a new group of believers. 00:07:59.77\00:08:01.98 This place has a great significance 00:08:11.62\00:08:13.69 for the history of Protestants in general, 00:08:13.72\00:08:16.22 and also for us as Seventh-Day Adventists. 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.13 Visitors to Italy's Waldensian Valley 00:08:19.16\00:08:22.03 are struck by its beautiful scenery. 00:08:22.06\00:08:24.90 But these beautiful valleys 00:08:24.93\00:08:26.50 are also a testament to faith and courage. 00:08:26.53\00:08:29.87 More than a century ago this is where 00:08:29.90\00:08:32.37 the Waldensian people fled to escape persecution. 00:08:32.41\00:08:36.54 They setup a missionary training school 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.81 and when persecution followed them, 00:08:38.85\00:08:40.58 they hid in caves to worship. 00:08:40.62\00:08:43.49 These valleys also played an important role 00:08:43.52\00:08:46.12 in Seventh-Day Adventist history. 00:08:46.15\00:08:48.12 And it's also significant place for us 00:08:48.16\00:08:50.86 'cause the baptism outside of the United States of America 00:08:50.89\00:08:55.00 was done here in Torre Pellice. 00:08:55.03\00:08:58.03 The Waldenses believed that 00:08:58.07\00:08:59.80 it was their duty to spread the gospel, 00:08:59.83\00:09:02.00 not keep it to themselves. 00:09:02.04\00:09:04.27 They wanted the world to know God's message 00:09:04.31\00:09:06.68 despite the risks that came with sharing it. 00:09:06.71\00:09:09.81 Today, as Christians 00:09:09.84\00:09:11.48 we still have a message of hope for the world 00:09:11.51\00:09:14.05 and a commission to carry the gospel to the world 00:09:14.08\00:09:16.52 so Jesus can come again. 00:09:16.55\00:09:18.49 Gabriele is the Global Mission pioneer 00:09:21.02\00:09:23.66 here in the Waldensian Valley. 00:09:23.69\00:09:25.96 Global Mission pioneers are lay people 00:09:25.99\00:09:28.40 sent out to plant new groups of believers. 00:09:28.43\00:09:31.03 But Gabriele's challenge is a little different. 00:09:31.07\00:09:34.10 His task is to share the Adventist faith 00:09:34.14\00:09:36.44 with people in these historic valleys. 00:09:36.47\00:09:39.37 We're trying to rekindle this faith in the Waldenses. 00:09:39.41\00:09:45.01 They were students of the Bible, 00:09:45.05\00:09:46.55 students of Bible prophecies, 00:09:46.58\00:09:48.28 so we're kind of trying to awake them to the heritage 00:09:48.32\00:09:51.39 that was left to them by their fathers. 00:09:51.42\00:09:54.49 Right now actually we have a small church 00:09:54.52\00:09:57.43 about 30 people in attendance. 00:09:57.46\00:09:59.79 And the thing is that we don't have an Adventist presence, 00:09:59.83\00:10:04.27 presence here in the valleys. 00:10:04.30\00:10:06.03 Basically all the members come from outside the valleys, 00:10:06.07\00:10:10.04 except for three of us 00:10:10.07\00:10:12.11 who live in the church buildings. 00:10:12.14\00:10:14.24 Members get together often, but have to travel far 00:10:14.28\00:10:17.61 to attend church or study together 00:10:17.65\00:10:19.38 during the week. 00:10:19.41\00:10:21.08 Gabriele's time is devoted to leading 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.22 and growing this small congregation. 00:10:23.25\00:10:26.02 You have many denominations here in the valley so, 00:10:26.05\00:10:29.96 there is good protestant presence here, and so you can, 00:10:29.99\00:10:33.93 you can speak about spiritual topics very, very freely. 00:10:33.96\00:10:38.63 It's not uncommon here to speak about God. 00:10:38.67\00:10:42.17 Since religion is so freely and commonly spoken about, 00:10:42.20\00:10:45.44 it takes a lot for people to stop and really listen. 00:10:45.47\00:10:49.11 Gabriele has only been here for about a year, 00:10:49.14\00:10:51.58 and he's experienced many of the challenges 00:10:51.61\00:10:53.72 of sharing his Adventist faith in this part of the world. 00:10:53.75\00:10:57.22 Please pray for the people in this region of the world. 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.32 Pray that pioneers like Gabriele 00:11:00.36\00:11:02.79 can be a light to these valleys. 00:11:02.82\00:11:05.43 Well, that's about it for Global Mission Snapshots today. 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.85 I hope that you've been inspired and challenged 00:11:23.88\00:11:26.58 by what you've seen and heard. 00:11:26.61\00:11:28.92 Around the world today from Italy to the United States to, 00:11:28.95\00:11:32.85 big cities to rural areas Seventh-day Adventists 00:11:32.89\00:11:36.06 are sharing the light of God's love, 00:11:36.09\00:11:38.53 in practical, tangible ways. 00:11:38.56\00:11:41.26 And I want to thank you for your support 00:11:41.30\00:11:42.93 of this mission through
