Showing God's love and compassion in Italy, 00:00:09.67\00:00:12.51 the United States and Indonesia coming up next. 00:00:12.54\00:00:15.71 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:20.92\00:00:23.39 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:23.42\00:00:26.32 He gave us a mission. 00:00:26.35\00:00:29.02 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world." 00:00:29.06\00:00:33.90 Telling them of His love. 00:00:33.93\00:00:36.53 This is our mission. 00:00:36.56\00:00:38.53 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:38.57\00:00:40.34 Hello, and welcome to today's program. 00:00:49.81\00:00:52.05 Coming to you from Downtown, San Antonio, 00:00:52.08\00:00:54.78 Texas in the United States. 00:00:54.82\00:00:57.92 San Antonio is full of iconic tourist destination 00:00:57.95\00:01:01.76 such as the Alamo, the River Walk, 00:01:01.79\00:01:04.79 and this tower that reaches up 00:01:04.83\00:01:06.59 750 feet into the air. 00:01:06.63\00:01:09.96 On today's program, 00:01:10.00\00:01:11.33 we'll be looking at mission around the world. 00:01:11.37\00:01:13.37 We'll be talking to a missionary pilot 00:01:13.40\00:01:15.87 who works in remote areas in Indonesia. 00:01:15.90\00:01:18.81 We'll also travel to the Waldensian Valleys. 00:01:18.84\00:01:21.68 But first up, 00:01:21.71\00:01:23.04 let's go to Florida here in the United States, 00:01:23.08\00:01:25.55 where we see a Church Plant, 00:01:25.58\00:01:27.68 showing the love and compassion of Jesus 00:01:27.72\00:01:30.55 in a practical way. 00:01:30.59\00:01:32.12 Discipleship for me, I think of it a very simply 00:01:36.52\00:01:39.39 as bringing all of Jesus into all of life, 00:01:39.43\00:01:43.00 so all of Jesus, His character, His ways, 00:01:43.03\00:01:45.43 His power, into all of life, 00:01:45.47\00:01:47.67 the different spheres that we live, 00:01:47.70\00:01:49.17 our work, our family, our neighborhood, 00:01:49.20\00:01:52.37 connecting with people either through geography 00:01:52.41\00:01:54.91 or through affinity, 00:01:54.94\00:01:56.28 with common hobbies and common interests. 00:01:56.31\00:01:58.48 So it's about all of Jesus into all of life. 00:01:58.51\00:02:01.25 In Port Charlotte, Florida, Pastor Anthony, 00:02:01.28\00:02:03.62 Donna and Clarence 00:02:03.65\00:02:05.05 worked together to Church Plant, 00:02:05.09\00:02:06.86 starting a new congregation of believers. 00:02:06.89\00:02:09.49 Since Church Planting 00:02:09.52\00:02:10.86 is one of the most effective ways 00:02:10.89\00:02:12.23 to make disciples, 00:02:12.26\00:02:13.60 this group begins here 00:02:13.63\00:02:15.26 using Christ's method as a compass. 00:02:15.30\00:02:18.30 Christ mingled with people from all walks of life, 00:02:18.33\00:02:21.34 and sought to do them good. 00:02:21.37\00:02:23.47 Because of Jesus' as example, 00:02:23.51\00:02:25.57 this community has found great relief and assistance 00:02:25.61\00:02:28.14 through the selfless ministry of the people 00:02:28.18\00:02:30.21 following Jesus' way. 00:02:30.25\00:02:32.51 Yes, that's the recipe for making disciples is just 00:02:32.55\00:02:35.02 to write on them because, 00:02:35.05\00:02:37.25 Jesus will write the rules on their heart, 00:02:37.29\00:02:38.72 when the time is right. 00:02:38.75\00:02:40.09 But they have to experience God's love first 00:02:40.12\00:02:41.49 before they are willing to trust Him enough 00:02:41.52\00:02:43.73 to do the rules because they can't do them. 00:02:43.76\00:02:46.16 Through a work of love and compassion, 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.16 God has brought many gifts to the lives 00:02:48.20\00:02:50.10 of those who engage in compass communities. 00:02:50.13\00:02:53.30 The good things that He has brought to my heart 00:02:53.34\00:02:55.47 is to serve other people, 00:02:55.50\00:02:57.37 but the biggest thing is to make sure 00:02:57.41\00:02:58.74 that I have time to spend with Him, 00:02:58.77\00:03:00.44 because if I don't have time to spend with Him, 00:03:00.48\00:03:02.51 then I'm not filled with His Holy Sprit. 00:03:02.54\00:03:04.58 Then I'm doing it in my own strength instead of His. 00:03:04.61\00:03:07.85 Because of a connection with heaven, 00:03:07.88\00:03:09.85 and an appreciation of what Jesus has done, 00:03:09.88\00:03:12.42 Donna and Clarence 00:03:12.45\00:03:13.79 continue making disciples at compass communities. 00:03:13.82\00:03:16.22 One is Sonia and, spiritually an elder 00:03:16.26\00:03:21.00 and our other candidate is... 00:03:21.03\00:03:22.36 Friday evenings, they serve the best free meal of the week 00:03:26.40\00:03:29.54 as a reminder to people of God's special love for them. 00:03:29.57\00:03:32.24 On Saturday mornings members and guests 00:03:34.91\00:03:36.95 from all walks of life come to this center 00:03:36.98\00:03:39.21 for spiritual nourishment. 00:03:39.25\00:03:40.82 We minister to a group of people the... 00:03:40.85\00:03:42.85 that's totally different from other people, 00:03:42.88\00:03:44.29 we minister to the mentally ill, 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.69 the mentally challenged. 00:03:46.72\00:03:48.79 The people have vices or the... 00:03:48.82\00:03:50.66 they have a drug addiction, alcohol, porn, 00:03:50.69\00:03:54.56 all kinds of different things. 00:03:54.60\00:03:56.26 And we've, autistic kids, a lot of autistic kinds. 00:03:56.30\00:04:00.37 We actually import most of them in, 00:04:00.40\00:04:02.04 we go pick them up. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.41 One of the things we emphasize was having a multi ethnic 00:04:03.44\00:04:06.17 and a multi economic church. 00:04:06.21\00:04:08.14 So a church has both diverse ethnicity and income levels. 00:04:08.18\00:04:11.21 And if you go there today, 00:04:11.25\00:04:12.58 you'll see people drive up in cars, 00:04:12.61\00:04:13.95 have real world jobs, you'll also see people about 00:04:13.98\00:04:16.89 literally slept in the woods the night before 00:04:16.92\00:04:19.25 and either walk or ride their bicycles there. 00:04:19.29\00:04:22.09 So to see people break those chains 00:04:22.12\00:04:26.03 and get back to the way 00:04:26.06\00:04:29.10 Christ would have them live is really neat. 00:04:29.13\00:04:32.53 And isn't this what Christ came to do? 00:04:32.57\00:04:34.97 He came to show what God is like 00:04:35.00\00:04:36.81 in practical and tangible ways. 00:04:36.84\00:04:38.97 In a manner that matters. 00:04:39.01\00:04:41.44 So we believe that the world doesn't need to see a church 00:04:41.48\00:04:45.98 that's an affinity group, where everyone's the same, 00:04:46.01\00:04:48.95 looks the same, same income level, 00:04:48.98\00:04:51.05 same background. 00:04:51.09\00:04:52.42 The world needs to see a church that's truly diverse 00:04:52.45\00:04:55.52 and in that the community says, what's going on here? 00:04:55.56\00:04:59.13 They see something different, 00:04:59.16\00:05:00.50 not just because of your theology, 00:05:00.53\00:05:02.23 but because of the diversity. 00:05:02.26\00:05:04.70 And the only thing that's drawing those people 00:05:04.73\00:05:06.63 together is Jesus Christ. 00:05:06.67\00:05:08.20 Compass Communities now has more than 50 members 00:05:18.21\00:05:21.22 who attend on a weekly basis, and are happy to be 00:05:21.25\00:05:24.22 a part of Christ's mission of disciplining. 00:05:24.25\00:05:27.09 They are asking for your prayers for their ministry 00:05:27.12\00:05:29.82 and for a new building to serve the people of Port Charlotte 00:05:29.86\00:05:33.09 in even more ways. 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.53 I'm delighted to introduce my friend Gary Roberts, 00:05:41.74\00:05:44.97 who is a pilot working in a... 00:05:45.01\00:05:47.94 an area of the world 00:05:47.98\00:05:49.74 that probably most viewers have never been to, 00:05:49.78\00:05:52.01 I have never been to this specific area. 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.12 It is West Papua, Indonesia. 00:05:54.15\00:05:56.58 Where exactly is that, Gary? 00:05:56.62\00:05:58.75 That's on the island of New Guinea, 00:05:58.79\00:06:00.32 which is just above Australia. 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.26 And the island is politically divided 00:06:02.29\00:06:05.36 so half is Papua New Guinea 00:06:05.39\00:06:06.93 and half is West Papua Indonesia. 00:06:06.96\00:06:09.03 All right, now you are a pilot 00:06:09.06\00:06:12.77 and aviation is your, in your blood, 00:06:12.80\00:06:15.80 where did your love of flying come from? 00:06:15.84\00:06:20.08 Well, I guess, I was born with it, 00:06:20.11\00:06:21.91 because my father was a pilot. 00:06:21.94\00:06:23.65 My mother was a nurse. 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.21 So I say that I'm a nurse by training, 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.62 because that's what I did in university, 00:06:27.65\00:06:29.48 a pilot by choice and a mechanic by default. 00:06:29.52\00:06:31.82 Like that. 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.49 And then you combine it all 00:06:33.52\00:06:34.92 into being a missionary as well. 00:06:34.96\00:06:36.46 Yes. 00:06:36.49\00:06:38.09 Yeah, now, Gary, where did you first start working? 00:06:38.13\00:06:41.86 I started working in South America, 00:06:41.90\00:06:43.30 in the country of Guyana. 00:06:43.33\00:06:44.67 Yes. 00:06:44.70\00:06:46.03 I was there right after college 00:06:46.07\00:06:47.67 and spent almost seven years there 00:06:47.70\00:06:50.01 doing medical aviation, nursing, flying, 00:06:50.04\00:06:52.37 mechanicing, spreading gospel into remote areas. 00:06:52.41\00:06:56.34 Then we moved to the country of Chad, 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.81 in Central Africa 00:06:58.85\00:07:00.42 and spent almost seven years there 00:07:00.45\00:07:02.45 before moving to Indonesia recently. 00:07:02.48\00:07:04.82 Wonderful. 00:07:04.85\00:07:06.19 Now I grew up fascinated in Australia 00:07:06.22\00:07:10.13 listening to stories of missionaries from the islands 00:07:10.16\00:07:13.13 talking about flying into dangerous areas, 00:07:13.16\00:07:16.23 and Pastor Led Bernard was a nurse 00:07:16.26\00:07:20.54 and a pilot just like you. 00:07:20.57\00:07:22.34 What a wonderful combination. 00:07:22.37\00:07:24.11 Absolutely, it's a phenomenal mix 00:07:24.14\00:07:26.78 and I had the opportunity 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.14 of meeting Pastor Led Bernard when I was there in Australia. 00:07:28.18\00:07:32.25 And my dad actually convinced me 00:07:32.28\00:07:34.85 to do something besides flying. 00:07:34.88\00:07:36.82 Because he said, if you're gonna be in the field, 00:07:36.85\00:07:38.19 you need to do something else as well. 00:07:38.22\00:07:40.66 And so that's where I got the idea of... 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.56 I loved helping people and so doing the medical 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.99 with the aviation is a perfect mix 00:07:46.03\00:07:47.50 because you can help them physically 00:07:47.53\00:07:50.10 and help them with the transportation needs, 00:07:50.13\00:07:52.33 and help them spiritually as well. 00:07:52.37\00:07:53.94 That's what I really enjoy. Fantastic. 00:07:53.97\00:07:56.27 So you've served in South America, Africa, Asia. 00:07:56.30\00:08:00.44 Where were you born? 00:08:00.48\00:08:01.94 I was actually born in Kenya, East Africa. 00:08:01.98\00:08:03.71 Okay. 00:08:03.75\00:08:05.08 Because my parents were missionaries 00:08:05.11\00:08:06.45 in that part of the world at that time. 00:08:06.48\00:08:08.15 I grew up in the Congo or Zaire as it known at that time. 00:08:08.18\00:08:11.29 And I spent the first... 00:08:11.32\00:08:12.65 almost first 15 part years of my life there. 00:08:12.69\00:08:16.19 When you look back at the old years of service, 00:08:16.22\00:08:18.83 tell me, what is been the most rewarding aspect 00:08:18.86\00:08:21.43 of what you've done? 00:08:21.46\00:08:22.80 I'd say, you know, telling people about God. 00:08:25.63\00:08:28.24 When you reach an area where you can see 00:08:28.27\00:08:30.21 that people have been living without the knowledge of God, 00:08:30.24\00:08:33.44 or in very difficult circumstances, 00:08:33.48\00:08:38.25 to see that God has used me to help reach those people. 00:08:38.28\00:08:42.62 You know, my dad was a missionary pilot 00:08:42.65\00:08:44.15 for almost 40 years. 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.12 And he always thought it would be cool to have 00:08:46.15\00:08:48.86 a baby born in his airplane. 00:08:48.89\00:08:50.46 Well, six moths after I went to South America, 00:08:50.49\00:08:52.53 I had a baby born in my airplane 00:08:52.56\00:08:53.93 while I was flying. 00:08:53.96\00:08:55.30 And, you know, God really gives us 00:08:55.33\00:08:56.77 the desires of our hearts. 00:08:56.80\00:08:58.33 He lets us do what we really want to do if we serve Him. 00:08:58.37\00:09:02.57 When I was a young boy, 00:09:02.60\00:09:03.94 I really wanted to be a missionary pilot 00:09:03.97\00:09:05.94 and help people and I choose to do that 00:09:05.97\00:09:08.74 and God has really blessed. 00:09:08.78\00:09:10.11 It's been an exciting experience. 00:09:10.15\00:09:11.98 But, Gary, you faced tragedy too, as it... 00:09:12.01\00:09:15.38 when you were in Chad. 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.92 How did you deal with the loss of your child? 00:09:17.95\00:09:22.02 It's always difficult when you lose your four year old son. 00:09:22.06\00:09:26.93 But, you know, God has... 00:09:26.96\00:09:28.76 God has called us to go. 00:09:28.80\00:09:31.03 He never calls us to come back. 00:09:31.07\00:09:33.50 And so it's... 00:09:33.54\00:09:35.60 it is a challenge but we have the hope of seeing him again, 00:09:35.64\00:09:40.48 and that keeps us going. 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.54 We returned to Chad after that and kept on working. 00:09:42.58\00:09:45.51 And it's amazing the advantage that it gave us, 00:09:45.55\00:09:49.68 because my wife was working with mothers and their babies 00:09:49.72\00:09:53.49 and almost every mother in Chad has lost 00:09:53.52\00:09:56.19 one, two, three or four children. 00:09:56.22\00:09:58.73 And so for them to realize that these things happen 00:09:58.76\00:10:01.90 to the foreigners as well, 00:10:01.93\00:10:03.87 it automatically gave a deeper connection 00:10:03.90\00:10:06.43 with the local people. 00:10:06.47\00:10:07.80 And helped the ministry. 00:10:07.84\00:10:10.74 And then if that weren't enough, 00:10:10.77\00:10:13.88 you recently lost your father. 00:10:13.91\00:10:15.98 What happened there, Gary? 00:10:16.01\00:10:19.21 He was killed in a plane accident 00:10:19.25\00:10:20.78 there in West Papua. 00:10:20.82\00:10:23.08 We still don't have a conclusive idea 00:10:23.12\00:10:25.95 why that happened. 00:10:25.99\00:10:27.36 But he was killed suddenly in a plane crash. 00:10:27.39\00:10:32.59 And again, to me it's a sign... 00:10:32.63\00:10:36.16 signs of the times, 00:10:36.20\00:10:37.83 'cause we told that at the end of time 00:10:37.87\00:10:39.80 some people will be called to rest before Jesus comes. 00:10:39.83\00:10:43.41 And he's been called to rest, his job is finished. 00:10:43.44\00:10:47.38 Now he is waiting for the resurrection. 00:10:47.41\00:10:49.28 And you have moved to West Papua 00:10:49.31\00:10:53.31 to take over from your father's footsteps, right? 00:10:53.35\00:10:56.58 Yes, we just moved in November of last year 00:10:56.62\00:10:59.12 and so we have the program up and operational weekend. 00:10:59.15\00:11:02.32 And we've been quite busy with many mission flights 00:11:02.36\00:11:05.06 because there was not a pilot there for a while, 00:11:05.09\00:11:07.43 but that's going well and we're already starting 00:11:07.46\00:11:09.63 to expand into some new areas also. 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.67 Fantastic. 00:11:11.70\00:11:13.34 Gary, thank you so much for the service 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.57 that you've given over the years 00:11:15.60\00:11:16.94 and the service that you're continuing to give. 00:11:16.97\00:11:18.91 I know you've been through the valleys, but I know, 00:11:18.94\00:11:22.04 God's also lifted you up to the heights. 00:11:22.08\00:11:24.01 That's right. And really it's a privilege. 00:11:24.05\00:11:26.85 It's a privilege to serve God. 00:11:26.88\00:11:28.28 Thank you so much. 00:11:28.32\00:11:29.68 And viewers, mission experiences sometimes 00:11:29.72\00:11:33.56 full of great excitement 00:11:33.59\00:11:34.92 but with wonderful things happening, 00:11:34.96\00:11:36.29 but tragedies do happen as well. 00:11:36.32\00:11:38.33 And it's so encouraging for missionaries 00:11:38.36\00:11:40.46 on the front line 00:11:40.50\00:11:42.06 to know that there is a World Church praying for them. 00:11:42.10\00:11:45.90 And this is a habit that many of us had 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.10 when we were younger to pray everyday for the missionaries 00:11:48.14\00:11:50.44 but I think sometimes that gets forgotten. 00:11:50.47\00:11:53.21 So if you would like to find out more about mission, 00:11:53.24\00:11:56.01 please go to AdventistMission.org. 00:11:56.04\00:11:58.21 There you can find stories 00:11:58.25\00:11:59.85 such as the story of Gary and his family, 00:11:59.88\00:12:03.08 and the commitment that they have for mission service. 00:12:03.12\00:12:07.46 Please remember also to support Mission 00:12:07.49\00:12:09.86 not only through your tithes and offering, 00:12:09.89\00:12:11.99 but also through your personal involvement. 00:12:12.03\00:12:14.56 We'll be right back straight after this break. 00:12:14.60\00:12:16.67
