Welcome back to Mexico City. 00:00:02.63\00:00:04.63 Next up, we travel to Lusaka, Zambia 00:00:04.67\00:00:07.64 and a couple of missionary doctors 00:00:07.67\00:00:09.40 share their experience 00:00:09.44\00:00:11.04 of running a dental and medical clinic. 00:00:11.07\00:00:13.38 When I came out here to Zambia, I realize that... 00:00:22.48\00:00:27.69 We are interdivision employees working through the G.C. 00:00:27.72\00:00:31.79 station out in the country of Zambia. 00:00:31.83\00:00:33.60 Lusaka is the capital and we are both here 00:00:33.63\00:00:36.73 and providing dental services to the community at large here 00:00:36.77\00:00:41.24 and my wife is an ophthalmologist 00:00:41.27\00:00:43.47 and I let her explain what she is doing out here. 00:00:43.51\00:00:46.88 So, yeah, we are medical missionaries 00:00:46.91\00:00:50.91 through the General Conference as he mentioned. 00:00:50.95\00:00:54.02 And as an ophthalmologist, I run the Lusaka Eye Hospital. 00:00:54.05\00:00:59.19 I'm the medical director there and I have multiple duties, 00:00:59.22\00:01:06.83 one being administrative, 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.73 and the other being a physician, 00:01:08.76\00:01:12.23 providing eye care, 00:01:12.27\00:01:13.64 doing the whole range of a ophthalmic surgeries, 00:01:13.67\00:01:16.77 lasers as well as consultations. 00:01:16.81\00:01:19.91 And I'm then overseeing our optometry department. 00:01:19.94\00:01:23.18 You know, we both, Janie and I 00:01:23.21\00:01:25.05 we've done quite a bit of mission trips, 00:01:25.08\00:01:27.28 mainly short term mission trips, 00:01:27.32\00:01:29.02 it could be a week or a couple weeks 00:01:29.05\00:01:31.09 throughout different parts of the world. 00:01:31.12\00:01:32.69 So we thought this was, you know, 00:01:32.72\00:01:34.86 something that we were just kind of slide right into. 00:01:34.89\00:01:38.59 Obviously, we were kind of surprised 00:01:38.63\00:01:40.90 that it was completely different 00:01:40.93\00:01:42.26 than what we had expected. 00:01:42.30\00:01:44.43 It had-- we knew it would be challenging. 00:01:44.47\00:01:46.63 We knew it'd be different. 00:01:46.67\00:01:48.27 However, when we got here, we realize that it was not 00:01:48.30\00:01:50.94 like your typical short term trips 00:01:50.97\00:01:52.64 where you just go and do good 00:01:52.67\00:01:54.31 and just return home feeling good. 00:01:54.34\00:01:56.91 We were assigned to these two institutions 00:01:56.95\00:01:59.68 and we had to carry the institutions financially. 00:01:59.71\00:02:04.45 We had to make sure that payroll is met. 00:02:04.49\00:02:06.45 We have fixed expenses. 00:02:06.49\00:02:08.12 These were things that really, we didn't expect to do. 00:02:08.16\00:02:10.93 We didn't know we had to be administrators 00:02:10.96\00:02:12.73 and to run the institution itself. 00:02:12.76\00:02:15.03 We mainly thought we would carry on, 00:02:15.06\00:02:17.97 providing service and do good and feel good about it 00:02:18.00\00:02:20.30 and help bring hope and healing to, 00:02:20.34\00:02:22.40 you know, those we serve. 00:02:22.44\00:02:23.77 But-- so it was quite a different experience 00:02:23.81\00:02:26.84 and we've grown a lot. 00:02:26.88\00:02:28.74 And we are at a better place after almost two years now. 00:02:28.78\00:02:32.88 And I must say that both institutions 00:02:32.91\00:02:34.98 were struggling financially when we did arrive. 00:02:35.02\00:02:39.59 And so, it was just a matter of doing a bit of research, 00:02:39.62\00:02:44.79 trying to figure out 00:02:44.83\00:02:46.16 what went wrong and what we can do 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.16 to help our health institutions 00:02:48.20\00:02:51.03 out in the in the mission field. 00:02:51.07\00:02:53.34 Survive and thrive and although we're not quite there yet, 00:02:53.37\00:02:58.87 I think we're on track to really helping 00:02:58.91\00:03:02.64 these institutions get back on their feet, 00:03:02.68\00:03:05.75 so that they can really be 00:03:05.78\00:03:07.65 a prominent health care institutions in the country. 00:03:07.68\00:03:11.75 And people can look to it and say, 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.39 "Yes, that is a Seventh Day Adventist institution." 00:03:13.42\00:03:16.29 And our church members can be a part of it 00:03:16.32\00:03:18.46 and they can be a witness 00:03:18.49\00:03:19.83 to those who don't know anything about our church. 00:03:19.86\00:03:23.23 So, why come and be a missionary? 00:03:23.26\00:03:25.13 Wasn't it easier to stay at home? 00:03:25.17\00:03:26.67 Yeah, I mean, you're perfectly right, I mean, 00:03:26.70\00:03:28.97 that would be the easy thing to do, 00:03:29.00\00:03:31.57 stay home and live your cookie cutter life of, 00:03:31.61\00:03:35.58 you know, your house, 00:03:35.61\00:03:37.01 white picket fencing, you know, for car garage, whatnot. 00:03:37.05\00:03:40.28 But in our case, you know, 00:03:40.32\00:03:41.65 we independently had a desire to serve 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.05 and become missionaries before we started 00:03:44.09\00:03:45.92 our respective programs, before we even met. 00:03:45.95\00:03:48.82 So it was very special that, you know, 00:03:48.86\00:03:50.69 we had an opportunity through Loma Linda, 00:03:50.73\00:03:52.66 where they had a special program 00:03:52.69\00:03:54.20 called Deferred Mission's Appointees 00:03:54.23\00:03:55.93 and we signed up for that. 00:03:55.96\00:03:58.17 And that kind of allowed us or that gave us an opportunity 00:03:58.20\00:04:02.24 to actually follow through with our, I guess, 00:04:02.27\00:04:05.27 childlike dream of one day becoming a missionary, 00:04:05.31\00:04:08.14 because before we started on this path 00:04:08.18\00:04:10.68 we were a little younger. 00:04:10.71\00:04:13.11 And you know, our dreams and goals may have been 00:04:13.15\00:04:15.42 very naive and very childlike to many. 00:04:15.45\00:04:18.75 But that was what truly motivated us 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.99 into our respective health care professions. 00:04:21.02\00:04:23.53 And at the end we wanted to stay true 00:04:23.56\00:04:26.29 to that deep desire to serve. 00:04:26.33\00:04:29.30 And I think it was kind of a long journey 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.97 to finish our respective programs 00:04:32.00\00:04:33.44 but ones we were done, 00:04:33.47\00:04:34.80 we still had that in our hearts. 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.20 We stay focused, we wanted to do what we committed to doing. 00:04:36.24\00:04:40.24 And we want to follow through with that. 00:04:40.28\00:04:41.84 You know, we believe that it was a covenant between 00:04:41.88\00:04:44.45 God and us and or-- 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.28 And we wanted to stay true to that and follow through in. 00:04:46.31\00:04:49.75 And I think that was one of the best decisions we've made, 00:04:49.78\00:04:52.52 you know. 00:04:52.55\00:04:54.02 We feel like the life that we're living is, is amazing. 00:04:54.06\00:04:58.03 It is very raw organic. 00:04:58.06\00:05:00.23 You can't make up 00:05:00.26\00:05:01.60 some of the stuff that we experience. 00:05:01.63\00:05:03.23 And I think with time we will know that, you know, 00:05:03.26\00:05:07.20 we made a right decision and it's amazing. 00:05:07.24\00:05:11.54 For me, I wanted to be a medical missionary 00:05:11.57\00:05:14.64 since I was sixteen and I knew in my heart. 00:05:14.68\00:05:17.55 And when I got into medical school, 00:05:17.58\00:05:20.55 it was basically God saying, 00:05:20.58\00:05:22.82 "You can get into medical school 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.85 if you decide to serve me, 00:05:24.89\00:05:26.86 and I've given you this opportunity." 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.06 And when I got into ophthalmology residency, 00:05:29.09\00:05:32.73 God was saying, "I'd let you get into this residency 00:05:32.76\00:05:35.96 if you decide to use your skills to serve me." 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.87 And when I got into my cornea fellowship, 00:05:38.90\00:05:41.30 it was the same thing. 00:05:41.34\00:05:42.67 "You're going to use these skills to serve me 00:05:42.70\00:05:44.91 someday in the mission field." 00:05:44.94\00:05:46.27 And so it was very clear in my mind 00:05:46.31\00:05:49.08 that that God was opening all of these doors. 00:05:49.11\00:05:53.55 So that ultimately I could serve him. 00:05:53.58\00:05:56.38 And I think, if I had-- 00:05:56.42\00:05:59.42 if I had run the other direction 00:05:59.45\00:06:02.09 and said I want to live 00:06:02.12\00:06:03.46 my conventional life in the U.S. 00:06:03.49\00:06:05.79 and I want to make the money 00:06:05.83\00:06:08.13 that an ophthalmologist can make, 00:06:08.16\00:06:10.37 married to a dentist who could make the money 00:06:10.40\00:06:12.67 a dentist could make in the US, I think that, 00:06:12.70\00:06:17.81 I know that that would have been the wrong decision. 00:06:17.84\00:06:20.51 And we would not be as fulfilled 00:06:20.54\00:06:22.88 as how we feel now. 00:06:22.91\00:06:25.65 Yeah, you know, although, 00:06:25.68\00:06:27.02 because I'm so involved in the medical side, 00:06:27.05\00:06:29.98 I don't get the joy of seeing, you know, 00:06:30.02\00:06:33.96 the fruits of the labor many times. 00:06:33.99\00:06:36.02 But you know, we do have a chaplain here 00:06:36.06\00:06:38.59 at our eye hospital. 00:06:38.63\00:06:40.63 And even yesterday in our morning devotion-- 00:06:40.66\00:06:45.37 after our morning devotion 00:06:45.40\00:06:46.74 he was making an announcement about two individuals 00:06:46.77\00:06:51.77 who gave their life to Christ, 00:06:51.81\00:06:55.74 recently after our outreach event in that community. 00:06:55.78\00:07:00.38 And he made a particular comment that was interesting. 00:07:00.42\00:07:02.88 He said, "Yes, in that area, 00:07:02.92\00:07:06.76 the people have been very stubborn. 00:07:06.79\00:07:09.36 But after this outreach event, you know, 00:07:09.39\00:07:11.73 their hearts were softened 00:07:11.76\00:07:13.09 when they saw the good 00:07:13.13\00:07:14.46 that our eye hospital was doing." 00:07:14.50\00:07:16.13 And so I think even though I don't often get to hear of, 00:07:16.16\00:07:20.57 you know, all of the fruits 00:07:20.60\00:07:22.30 and all of the fruits of the labor, 00:07:22.34\00:07:27.21 I know that there's a lot going on 00:07:27.24\00:07:29.54 after we've gone through an area, 00:07:29.58\00:07:31.08 after we've done screenings or outreach events, 00:07:31.11\00:07:34.12 there have been people giving their lives to Christ. 00:07:34.15\00:07:36.75 There are occasionally through the year, 00:07:36.79\00:07:40.36 combined with our eye camp, 00:07:40.39\00:07:42.19 we'll do a combined evangelistic series. 00:07:42.22\00:07:45.36 And during those times, 00:07:45.39\00:07:48.26 you can actually see many people getting baptized 00:07:48.30\00:07:51.70 and giving their lives to Christ. 00:07:51.73\00:07:53.37 So it's pretty amazing. 00:07:53.40\00:07:57.11 It gives a break from just the medical aspect of it 00:07:57.14\00:08:00.54 to hear those stories. 00:08:00.58\00:08:01.91 Next up, an Adventist pastor takes ministry to the beach. 00:08:03.91\00:08:08.25 With the ocean as his classroom, 00:08:08.28\00:08:10.25 he connects with people wanting to learn how to serve. 00:08:10.29\00:08:14.39 At the same time, he teaches them from the Bible, 00:08:14.42\00:08:17.46 his waterproof Bible. 00:08:17.49\00:08:19.29 You'll enjoy this amazing story 00:08:19.33\00:08:21.03 as people literally soak up the word. 00:08:21.06\00:08:23.73 You can't deny, 00:08:35.21\00:08:36.54 all good things start with a connection above. 00:08:36.58\00:08:40.22 Unless we sit at the feet of Jesus to learn His ways, 00:08:40.25\00:08:44.39 we cannot live like Him. 00:08:44.42\00:08:47.76 His love is in us, propels us forward, 00:08:47.79\00:08:51.23 like a wave moves a surf board. 00:08:51.26\00:08:53.53 On first contact, we present what's most familiar to them. 00:09:06.07\00:09:10.35 And that is the ocean and the waves. 00:09:10.38\00:09:12.71 We tell them that God creates the waves. 00:09:12.75\00:09:14.72 They are in His Hands. 00:09:14.75\00:09:16.45 Then they see that God thought of them. 00:09:16.48\00:09:18.69 And when they realize that God thought of them, 00:09:18.72\00:09:20.72 it begins to make sense 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.09 that they are part of God's creation. 00:09:22.12\00:09:24.59 It then becomes easier to accept 00:09:24.63\00:09:26.26 that God made us and loves us. 00:09:26.29\00:09:29.00 The language needs to be simple. 00:09:29.03\00:09:31.10 It needs to be something that they understand. 00:09:31.13\00:09:33.40 So I call them bros. 00:09:33.44\00:09:35.10 So they know that God is a friend, 00:09:35.14\00:09:36.81 a true friend who is beside them. 00:09:36.84\00:09:39.31 God cares for us 00:09:39.34\00:09:40.78 and we communicate that to their heart. 00:09:40.81\00:09:43.41 It's more than just saying it. 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.05 We have to live it. 00:09:45.08\00:09:46.95 Hey, Brother, come here for a sec. 00:09:46.98\00:09:48.98 That's good wave, huh? 00:09:49.02\00:09:50.35 Check this out, a waterproof Bible. 00:09:54.66\00:09:59.36 You got a Bible in the water. That's awesome, Bro. 00:09:59.39\00:10:02.76 This one is the women's version but I have one for you. 00:10:05.53\00:10:09.44 Come closer, let's do a short reading. 00:10:09.47\00:10:13.88 I don't immediately tell them I'm a pastor. 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.44 People don't want to know what our profession is 00:10:16.48\00:10:18.08 but rather who we are. 00:10:18.11\00:10:19.81 Then with time, they find out 00:10:19.85\00:10:22.02 and begin to truly understand this ministry, 00:10:22.05\00:10:24.19 to be in the water with them and relaxed in unique way 00:10:24.22\00:10:27.06 with a waterproof Bible. 00:10:27.09\00:10:28.59 Sometimes it's hard because people think 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.46 that there is only one way to preach. 00:10:30.49\00:10:32.26 And it's only in their way. 00:10:32.29\00:10:33.73 But Jesus was never like this. 00:10:33.76\00:10:35.63 He preached in His unique way with His own language. 00:10:35.66\00:10:39.07 The Pharisees, many times charged him 00:10:39.10\00:10:41.10 with preaching in the wrong way. 00:10:41.14\00:10:42.74 Saying, He preaches to the uneducated and the poor. 00:10:42.77\00:10:46.51 But Brother, Jesus knew the language of people. 00:10:46.54\00:10:50.05 What gets us sometimes, 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.41 is trying to put everyone in a box, 00:10:51.45\00:10:53.25 as if this is possible. 00:10:53.28\00:10:55.75 Well, I really like to say this 00:10:55.78\00:10:57.65 because it was what Jesus said when people asked. 00:10:57.69\00:11:00.46 "Where is your kingdom?" 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.69 The answer, "My kingdom is neither here nor there. 00:11:02.72\00:11:05.73 It's unseen. 00:11:05.76\00:11:07.53 My kingdom is inside people." 00:11:07.56\00:11:10.37 When we understand this, 00:11:10.40\00:11:11.77 we begin to see that our ministry 00:11:11.80\00:11:13.13 is inside each person. 00:11:13.17\00:11:15.30 If one surfs, then I need to surf to be with them. 00:11:15.34\00:11:18.47 If I'm gonna talk to a sower, 00:11:18.51\00:11:19.97 then I need to sow next to that person. 00:11:20.01\00:11:21.91 If I'm going to speak to a street worker, 00:11:21.94\00:11:23.51 who lives around homeless people, 00:11:23.55\00:11:24.91 I must experience that for myself. 00:11:24.95\00:11:27.42 Then and only then, 00:11:27.45\00:11:28.95 I can see how that person lives and what he needs. 00:11:28.98\00:11:33.49 As Pastor Vini gets ready to teach surfing, 00:11:33.52\00:11:35.86 he pauses to talk to the students 00:11:35.89\00:11:37.63 about the Creator of the ocean and the waves. 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.50 He begins each class with a small worship 00:11:40.53\00:11:42.96 and a waterproof Bible reading. 00:11:43.00\00:11:45.50 In the summer, 00:11:45.53\00:11:46.87 there are so many requests for classes 00:11:46.90\00:11:49.20 that he has to limit the number of participants. 00:11:49.24\00:11:51.87 And the results are astonishing. 00:11:51.91\00:11:55.24 The baptismal results are fantastic. 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.61 There are beautiful stories of people who, 00:11:57.65\00:11:59.25 otherwise may never have heard about Jesus. 00:11:59.28\00:12:01.82 But here at the beach, in the ocean, 00:12:01.85\00:12:03.95 they begin to discover Jesus in nature. 00:12:03.99\00:12:06.59 And in time, they come to me and say, 00:12:06.62\00:12:08.99 "Brother, I want to learn more. 00:12:09.02\00:12:11.19 Please tell me more about this God." 00:12:11.23\00:12:13.43 Then we study more systematically, 00:12:13.46\00:12:15.76 visiting their house and bringing them to church. 00:12:15.80\00:12:18.07 They participate in praise, worship, intercessory prayer, 00:12:18.10\00:12:22.14 making the request. 00:12:22.17\00:12:23.64 And they begin to have a true connection with God. 00:12:23.67\00:12:26.41 Remember to read your Bible. 00:12:34.52\00:12:35.98 Yeah. 00:12:36.02\00:12:37.35 Well, that's about it for today's program. 00:12:44.09\00:12:46.29 I hope that you've enjoyed. 00:12:46.33\00:12:47.66 And also been challenged by what you've seen and heard 00:12:47.70\00:12:50.67 on today's program. 00:12:50.70\00:12:52.53 Around the world today 00:12:52.57\00:12:53.90 there are many mission challenges. 00:12:53.94\00:12:55.60 Urban challenges like here in Mexico City, 00:12:55.64\00:12:58.47 rural areas where people have never even heard 00:12:58.51\00:13:00.78 the name of Jesus Christ. 00:13:00.81\00:13:02.61 But the light of God's love 00:13:02.64\00:13:03.98 is being shared by faithful men and women 00:13:04.01\00:13:06.65 who take seriously, 00:13:06.68\00:13:08.02 the great commission to "go into all the world." 00:13:08.05\00:13:10.99 Thank you, for your continuing prayerful support 00:13:11.02\00:13:14.06 of mission around
