Welcome back. 00:00:09.74\00:00:11.07 My guest is Pastor Wayne Krause 00:00:11.11\00:00:12.64 who is the director of the Center for Church Planting 00:00:12.67\00:00:15.51 for the South Pacific region of 00:00:15.54\00:00:17.28 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:17.31\00:00:19.01 He's also a church pastor, a church planter 00:00:19.05\00:00:21.98 and interestingly enough, my brother. 00:00:22.02\00:00:24.15 Welcome, Wayne. It's good to be here. 00:00:24.19\00:00:26.05 Church planting starting new congregations, 00:00:26.09\00:00:28.29 why is that important? 00:00:28.32\00:00:30.99 I think church planting is important 00:00:31.03\00:00:32.66 because it's afantastic way to make disciples. 00:00:32.69\00:00:36.63 We don't plant churches to plant churches. 00:00:36.67\00:00:38.63 We plant churches to make disciples. 00:00:38.67\00:00:41.10 So church planting is I think 00:00:41.14\00:00:42.90 the most effective way of making disciples. 00:00:42.94\00:00:45.41 Now you were working within a Western context in a-- 00:00:45.44\00:00:49.64 mainly in Australia, New Zealand 00:00:49.68\00:00:52.41 and also some in the South Pacific. 00:00:52.45\00:00:53.82 But these are mainly secular context. 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.18 How do you go about starting 00:00:56.22\00:00:57.55 the new congregation in that sort of society? 00:00:57.59\00:01:01.12 It is a real challenge. 00:01:01.16\00:01:02.52 And we're very grateful that we have the Holy Spirit 00:01:02.56\00:01:05.23 because the real challenge 00:01:05.26\00:01:07.76 is talking to people who have really no interest in God, 00:01:07.80\00:01:12.23 they don't see Him on the radar screen, 00:01:12.27\00:01:14.57 they don't think of Him when they reach a crisis. 00:01:14.60\00:01:17.51 And predominantly, they see themselves as happy. 00:01:17.54\00:01:20.31 So happy pagans if you like. Right. 00:01:20.34\00:01:22.54 So you really have to spend 00:01:22.58\00:01:23.91 a lot of time building relationships, 00:01:23.95\00:01:27.02 intentional, authentic, long term relationships 00:01:27.05\00:01:31.49 and that can be a challenge for some people. 00:01:31.52\00:01:33.19 You know, what are some of the dangers, 00:01:33.22\00:01:35.72 some of the pitfalls you can fall into 00:01:35.76\00:01:37.63 when you are working with the community? 00:01:37.66\00:01:41.23 Pitfalls, I think one of the challenges 00:01:41.26\00:01:44.63 we've discovered is sometimes you can go into a community 00:01:44.67\00:01:48.14 and work for them. 00:01:48.17\00:01:49.60 Yes. 00:01:49.64\00:01:50.97 Okay, so you go in and you do a survey 00:01:51.01\00:01:52.77 about their needs or you see a need 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.74 and you just go in there and try and meet that need. 00:01:55.78\00:01:58.11 What we found is much more effective 00:01:58.15\00:02:00.28 is actually with the community, not for them. 00:02:00.32\00:02:03.62 So you work alongside people in the community 00:02:03.65\00:02:06.89 to work with the community. 00:02:06.92\00:02:08.26 In actual fact then, 00:02:08.29\00:02:09.62 the people you are most effective 00:02:09.66\00:02:10.99 in reaching is often the people you are working with. 00:02:11.03\00:02:13.23 Yeah. Not working for. 00:02:13.26\00:02:15.46 So you involve people have an interest 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.87 in what you are doing? 00:02:18.90\00:02:20.24 Yeah, so we, for example, 00:02:20.27\00:02:21.60 have been running a breakfast club 00:02:21.64\00:02:24.54 at the local elementary school, 00:02:24.57\00:02:26.81 public school, and we found that the children, 00:02:26.84\00:02:30.78 even though they are hungry wouldn't come 00:02:30.81\00:02:32.61 because they thought-- saw themselves as poor 00:02:32.65\00:02:35.32 and they didn't want anyone else 00:02:35.35\00:02:36.69 to see themselves as poor. 00:02:36.72\00:02:38.05 Right. 00:02:38.09\00:02:39.42 So as soon as we got teachers involved on our team, 00:02:39.45\00:02:42.32 the parents involved on the team, 00:02:42.36\00:02:44.43 the children themselves involved in the team 00:02:44.46\00:02:46.43 and it became a social event. 00:02:46.46\00:02:47.90 It became a lot more effective. 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.40 The kids who are hungry would come up 00:02:50.43\00:02:51.97 because the popular kids were there. 00:02:52.00\00:02:54.60 So they would turn up. 00:02:54.64\00:02:55.97 Now we have people coming to our church 00:02:56.00\00:02:57.61 from the school. 00:02:57.64\00:02:59.14 We have teachers coming and those from the community 00:02:59.17\00:03:01.91 as a result of them feeling that our church 00:03:01.94\00:03:04.38 was part of their community, 00:03:04.41\00:03:06.01 not just doing things for the community. 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.65 Right, so nobody wants to feel like a charity case. 00:03:07.68\00:03:09.48 That's right. 00:03:09.52\00:03:10.85 In actual fact, you can make people feel 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.82 less of themselves. 00:03:12.85\00:03:14.19 When a child sees their dad receiving a food parcel 00:03:14.22\00:03:17.76 because he can't work or something like that, 00:03:17.79\00:03:20.00 it can actually demean the father in the child's eyes. 00:03:20.03\00:03:22.83 But if you get the father involved 00:03:22.86\00:03:25.07 in helping other people with food, 00:03:25.10\00:03:27.07 then it could actually lift the whole-- 00:03:27.10\00:03:29.30 the whole process with the children 00:03:29.34\00:03:30.97 and the parents. 00:03:31.01\00:03:32.34 Now this breakfast club for the local public school, 00:03:32.37\00:03:35.11 it won confidence with the community. 00:03:35.14\00:03:37.71 Tell me about that. Yes. 00:03:37.75\00:03:39.61 It won so much confidence in the community 00:03:39.65\00:03:41.85 that the community said they would like our church 00:03:41.88\00:03:44.15 to provide a chaplain for the school. 00:03:44.19\00:03:46.42 And they said, if it's any other church, 00:03:46.45\00:03:47.86 we don't want it. 00:03:47.89\00:03:49.22 But they asked the parents, 00:03:49.26\00:03:50.59 they asked the teachers and they said yes from that church, 00:03:50.63\00:03:53.56 Adventist church we wanted, no where else. 00:03:53.60\00:03:55.66 Wonderful. 00:03:55.70\00:03:57.03 Now tell me about the procedure 00:03:57.07\00:03:59.83 you went through where you actually 00:03:59.87\00:04:01.60 went to the police station to ask how can we be of service. 00:04:01.64\00:04:05.07 Well, in actual fact, the police chief 00:04:05.11\00:04:08.81 knew one of our church members 00:04:08.84\00:04:10.48 who was in charge of the rescue squad for the region. 00:04:10.51\00:04:13.68 And they were talking and the police chief said, 00:04:13.72\00:04:16.48 "Could your church please do a ministry 00:04:16.52\00:04:19.15 at the local railway station where the teenagers come, 00:04:19.19\00:04:22.02 Friday and Saturday nights are real problem for us?" 00:04:22.06\00:04:24.73 And we said, "Well, there's other big organizations 00:04:24.76\00:04:27.03 that you could do this." 00:04:27.06\00:04:28.40 And they said, "No, we know you, 00:04:28.43\00:04:30.37 we'd rather your church do it." 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.00 So we are looking at that in the future 00:04:32.03\00:04:33.87 of our ministry we could be doing. 00:04:33.90\00:04:35.87 So how important is Christ method of ministry for you? 00:04:35.90\00:04:39.87 The issue of mingling, the issue of seeing 00:04:39.91\00:04:43.18 the good in other people and wanting the best for them, 00:04:43.21\00:04:46.75 not seeing them as a project or a target 00:04:46.78\00:04:49.95 but as friends, is a huge thing. 00:04:49.98\00:04:52.42 And once you build those relationships, 00:04:52.45\00:04:54.62 then you can have the other conversations 00:04:54.66\00:04:57.03 about their eternity and their love for Jesus Christ. 00:04:57.06\00:05:00.40 So win the confidence before you do the biding? 00:05:00.43\00:05:02.86 That's right. 00:05:02.90\00:05:04.23 So how-- you as a pastor have a vision for, 00:05:04.27\00:05:07.44 you know, you started church, 00:05:07.47\00:05:08.80 this is what you wanted to look like, 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.17 how do you involve church members? 00:05:10.21\00:05:14.24 Well, one of the challenges that the established church 00:05:14.28\00:05:17.88 has is a lot of church members see themselves as recipients 00:05:17.91\00:05:22.15 of what the professional clergy do 00:05:22.18\00:05:24.32 or what the church does for them. 00:05:24.35\00:05:25.69 So the churches there to serve me. 00:05:25.72\00:05:27.16 The church is there to serve me. 00:05:27.19\00:05:28.59 So we can actually talk about the fact of 00:05:28.62\00:05:30.69 I didn't like today's sermon, thinking it's about me. 00:05:30.73\00:05:33.33 Right. 00:05:33.36\00:05:34.70 But if you have the attitude of we exist 00:05:34.73\00:05:36.67 for those aren't here yet, 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.33 and you design your church around that 00:05:38.37\00:05:39.90 where every member sees themselves as a minister, 00:05:39.93\00:05:43.37 wherever they go throughout the world, 00:05:43.41\00:05:45.24 there a minister, if they go to school, 00:05:45.27\00:05:47.41 they are minister, at their home they are minister, 00:05:47.44\00:05:49.71 then you see a big change. 00:05:49.74\00:05:51.55 Wonderful. That's the way we do it. 00:05:51.58\00:05:52.91 So how is church planting going in the South Pacific region? 00:05:52.95\00:05:56.55 It's a challenge, in the olive fields, 00:05:56.58\00:05:58.85 a lot more successfully amongst the immigrants 00:05:58.89\00:06:01.96 and ethnic groups, a lot more stronger. 00:06:01.99\00:06:04.96 We are challenged with the idea of 00:06:04.99\00:06:08.23 the Anglo-Caucasian church planting. 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.93 But that's still happening. It's still happening. 00:06:10.97\00:06:12.83 We're still trying. Wonderful. 00:06:12.87\00:06:14.64 Wayne, thank you so much for sharing with us today 00:06:14.67\00:06:16.54 the challenges but also the good things 00:06:16.57\00:06:18.87 that are happening in the South Pacific. 00:06:18.91\00:06:20.78 Thank you. 00:06:20.81\00:06:22.14 Church planting is the lifeblood 00:06:22.18\00:06:24.81 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:06:24.85\00:06:27.15 But being a church planter can sometimes a bit lonely, 00:06:27.18\00:06:29.75 sometimes it can be even discouraging. 00:06:29.78\00:06:31.89 So it's very encouraging to know 00:06:31.92\00:06:33.46 that there are people praying for them. 00:06:33.49\00:06:34.89 So please continue to remember, 00:06:34.92\00:06:36.83 church planters and church planting in your prayers. 00:06:36.86\00:06:40.03 Next up, we travel to Southern Africa 00:06:40.06\00:06:42.06 to see your mission offerings at work 00:06:42.10\00:06:44.73 with the 13th Sabbath offering project. 00:06:44.77\00:06:46.67 "Be still and know that I am God. 00:06:47.90\00:06:50.17 I'll be exalted among the heathen, 00:06:50.21\00:06:52.41 I will be exalted in the earth. 00:06:52.44\00:06:55.74 The Lord of hosts is with us. 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.18 The God of Jacob is our refuge." 00:06:58.21\00:07:00.62 Before I was an Adventist, before I was baptized, 00:07:05.52\00:07:09.19 I usually came home late and I just wanted, 00:07:09.22\00:07:12.69 you know, every time I wanted to play 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.96 just that rather than going to school 00:07:15.00\00:07:17.17 on Wednesdays, on Sabbaths, I'll just go and play. 00:07:17.20\00:07:21.70 Now ever since that I'm an Adventist 00:07:21.74\00:07:23.77 I know I can separate right form wrong. 00:07:23.81\00:07:28.64 "There is a river, the streams whereof 00:07:28.68\00:07:30.95 shall make glad the city of God, 00:07:30.98\00:07:33.82 the holy place of the tabernacles 00:07:33.85\00:07:36.42 of the most High." 00:07:36.45\00:07:38.82 Bhatisani lives in the country of Botswana. 00:07:38.85\00:07:41.59 Before, he didn't take life seriously 00:07:41.62\00:07:44.33 and used to get himself into trouble. 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.73 He became a Seventh-day Adventist 00:07:46.76\00:07:48.43 because a friend invited him to come to church with him. 00:07:48.46\00:07:51.40 It didn't take long for Bhatisani 00:07:51.43\00:07:53.60 to believe in Jesus and read the Bible 00:07:53.64\00:07:55.77 every chance he could. 00:07:55.80\00:07:58.57 Now he's even a deacon at his local church. 00:07:58.61\00:08:01.44 But he faces challenges that is, public school. 00:08:01.48\00:08:04.41 The teachers expect him to attend school on Saturdays 00:08:04.45\00:08:07.12 for classes and exams. 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.12 Bhatisani knows he needs an education 00:08:09.15\00:08:11.49 but feels a conflict in his heart. 00:08:11.52\00:08:14.66 Yes, I feel sad because this is against our choice 00:08:14.69\00:08:18.83 and that's not what Jesus wants. 00:08:18.86\00:08:20.93 Jesus said, "We should remember the Sabbath 00:08:20.96\00:08:23.63 and keep it holy." 00:08:23.67\00:08:26.50 Bhatisani's family are not Adventists 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.70 but they are very supportive of his decisions. 00:08:28.74\00:08:31.47 They want him to study hard so that one day 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.64 he can get a good job. 00:08:33.68\00:08:35.44 Every day after school they help him with his homework. 00:08:35.48\00:08:38.85 His family knows that he dreams of the day 00:08:38.88\00:08:41.12 an Adventist primary school opens near them. 00:08:41.15\00:08:44.09 That would be better because I would be now in-- 00:08:44.12\00:08:48.02 I'll be receiving an Adventist education. 00:08:48.06\00:08:51.49 That means that I'll be able to attend-- 00:08:51.53\00:08:55.00 on Sabbath I'll be able to go to church 00:08:55.03\00:08:57.50 and do out good one's than rather than going to school. 00:08:57.53\00:09:01.84 There are many Adventist children in Botswana 00:09:01.87\00:09:04.01 who faced the same Sabbath challenges 00:09:04.04\00:09:06.24 that Bhatisani faces. 00:09:06.27\00:09:08.28 This quarter, a portion of your 13th Sabbath offering, 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.08 will go toward building a primary school in Botswana. 00:09:11.11\00:09:13.95 So that children like Bhatisani can go to school 00:09:13.98\00:09:16.48 without worry of compromising their faith. 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.49 Thank you for your support of mission projects like these. 00:09:19.52\00:09:24.06 I'm proud of my church because I know 00:09:24.09\00:09:26.09 that they can do every thing best for us 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.63 so that we can end up in the kingdom of heaven. 00:09:28.66\00:09:31.53 Well, thanks for joining us 00:09:38.84\00:09:40.18 on today's Global Mission Snapshots. 00:09:40.21\00:09:41.98 I hope that you've been inspired and challenged 00:09:42.01\00:09:44.55 by what you've seen and heard. 00:09:44.58\00:09:46.51 From dense population areas here in the United States 00:09:46.55\00:09:50.09 to remote villages in Southern Africa, 00:09:50.12\00:09:53.19 men and women are sharing the life of God's love 00:09:53.22\00:09:56.29 in practical, tangible ways 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.76 and thank you for your continuing prayers 00:09:58.79\00:10:00.80 and financial support that makes this possible. 00:10:00.83\00:10:04.00 We'd like to send you a small piggy bank, 00:10:04.03\00:10:07.00 a money box where you can collect mission offerings, 00:10:07.04\00:10:10.41 put them together over the course of 00:10:10.44\00:10:12.21 two
