Welcome back. My guest is Dr. Richard Hart 00:00:10.14\00:00:12.57 who is the president of Loma Linda University 00:00:12.61\00:00:15.11 in California. 00:00:15.14\00:00:16.48 Thanks for joining us, Dr. Hart. 00:00:16.51\00:00:17.85 It's good to be with you, Gary. 00:00:17.88\00:00:19.21 Now Loma Linda University is owned 00:00:19.25\00:00:20.58 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:20.62\00:00:22.38 What's the purpose of the University? 00:00:22.42\00:00:24.79 We are, what's called an academic health science center 00:00:24.82\00:00:27.39 in this country, there's a 145 of those, 00:00:27.42\00:00:29.79 which means you've got a medical school, 00:00:29.82\00:00:31.63 a teaching hospital 00:00:31.66\00:00:32.99 and some other health science schools. 00:00:33.03\00:00:34.56 So, that's, we are the only one really in the church 00:00:34.60\00:00:37.63 of that magnitude, 00:00:37.67\00:00:39.00 that has all of those components in it 00:00:39.03\00:00:40.47 so, our duty as church is to prepare people for services 00:00:40.50\00:00:43.67 in the church from all the health professions. 00:00:43.71\00:00:45.84 Now, how does that work, do you, um, 00:00:45.87\00:00:48.98 find, areas of need in the world 00:00:49.01\00:00:50.65 and send, send staff there. 00:00:50.68\00:00:53.31 What do you do? 00:00:53.35\00:00:54.78 In the old days basically we trained people 00:00:54.82\00:00:57.02 and the church would call them and they would go out. 00:00:57.05\00:00:59.35 In more recent years, we've kind of-- I like to say, 00:00:59.39\00:01:01.82 we hold their hands as they go, in other words 00:01:01.86\00:01:03.56 we been involved with them as they go out, 00:01:03.59\00:01:05.46 because there's a lot of issues well, politically, 00:01:05.49\00:01:08.13 economically, culturally and so on. 00:01:08.16\00:01:10.20 And so our graduates feel more comfortable 00:01:10.23\00:01:12.03 maintaining tie with Loma Linda. 00:01:12.07\00:01:13.97 So we have done that in a number of ways 00:01:14.00\00:01:15.34 through an organization we started there 00:01:15.37\00:01:16.71 called Adventist Health International 00:01:16.74\00:01:18.07 or through links in other ways, 00:01:18.11\00:01:20.04 so that we can continue to work with our graduates 00:01:20.08\00:01:22.14 and support them in their activities. 00:01:22.18\00:01:23.85 What sort of areas of the world do you find 00:01:23.88\00:01:26.41 your graduates serving? 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.72 Well, it's changed a bit. 00:01:28.75\00:01:31.39 When I was going to Loma Linda, 40 years ago, 00:01:31.42\00:01:34.36 South America was the big thrust 00:01:34.39\00:01:36.26 that we all thought we go to, and India. 00:01:36.29\00:01:38.79 Now both of those countries 00:01:38.83\00:01:40.16 are pretty well self sufficient. 00:01:40.20\00:01:41.53 We do some in India. 00:01:41.56\00:01:42.90 Now it's really shifted larger to Africa, parts of, 00:01:42.93\00:01:45.53 a few parts of Asia, and parts of inner America. 00:01:45.57\00:01:48.64 So that's where most of our graduates are going. 00:01:48.67\00:01:51.07 Depending upon what their skills are, of course. 00:01:51.11\00:01:52.81 Yeah, AHI, how many hospitals 00:01:52.84\00:01:56.95 you are supervising, involved in? 00:01:56.98\00:01:58.71 We are directly involved with about 30 hospitals now. 00:01:58.75\00:02:01.32 And then what, what, 00:02:01.35\00:02:02.68 about five or six different divisions of the world field, 00:02:02.72\00:02:05.09 trying to strengthen the hospital's infrastructure, 00:02:05.12\00:02:08.19 their buildings, their equipment, 00:02:08.22\00:02:09.92 their staffing, their management, 00:02:09.96\00:02:11.46 their boards and so on. 00:02:11.49\00:02:12.83 That's a huge commitment. 00:02:12.86\00:02:14.20 Yes, it is. 00:02:14.23\00:02:15.56 And for being involved in so many activities, 00:02:15.60\00:02:19.43 to also care for that many hospitals, 00:02:19.47\00:02:22.00 how do you, how do you find getting staff, 00:02:22.04\00:02:24.37 do you find that students 00:02:24.41\00:02:25.74 are keen to involve in this sort of thing? 00:02:25.77\00:02:27.84 Yeah, my personal philosophy has always been that 00:02:27.88\00:02:30.21 the best way to strengthen spirituality, 00:02:30.25\00:02:33.21 is to a commitment to service 00:02:33.25\00:02:35.25 and so we have devised over the years 00:02:35.28\00:02:37.52 a number of service opportunities in the Loma Linda 00:02:37.55\00:02:39.35 both locally around in our own community 00:02:39.39\00:02:41.36 and internationally 00:02:41.39\00:02:42.72 so are goal is for 40 to 50% of student 00:02:42.76\00:02:46.06 be involve inn a service activities every year, 00:02:46.09\00:02:48.23 despite having curriculum, 00:02:48.26\00:02:49.80 I mean these are health professional student, 00:02:49.83\00:02:51.70 medicine done into your pharmacy, 00:02:51.73\00:02:53.70 nursing and so on, but that early to me 00:02:53.74\00:02:57.04 is a way to maintain their link to the church to commitment 00:02:57.07\00:02:59.81 and humanitarian issues and to avid the materialism 00:02:59.84\00:03:02.94 that often sets in when you're developing 00:03:02.98\00:03:04.48 your health professional career. 00:03:04.51\00:03:05.85 Yeah, very important, now, many of your staff 00:03:05.88\00:03:08.65 are involved in various opportunities too, 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.19 can you describe some of that? 00:03:11.22\00:03:12.75 We have institutes we call them at Loma Linda. 00:03:12.79\00:03:15.22 So we have a global health institute 00:03:15.26\00:03:16.66 that helps guide all of our international involvement, 00:03:16.69\00:03:18.89 of various kinds all over that world 00:03:18.93\00:03:20.76 and we have an institute for community partners 00:03:20.80\00:03:22.73 that basically coordinates all of our 00:03:22.76\00:03:24.30 domestic activities around there. 00:03:24.33\00:03:25.93 We are just in the process of building 00:03:25.97\00:03:27.34 a San Bernardino campus, downtown San Bernardino 00:03:27.37\00:03:29.20 in the city next to us, 00:03:29.24\00:03:30.57 a bankrupt city, one of the poor cities in the country, 00:03:30.61\00:03:33.74 just three miles from Loma Linda. 00:03:33.78\00:03:35.21 So we are heavily involved with that 00:03:35.24\00:03:36.58 which will be an expanded base of activities for our students 00:03:36.61\00:03:39.38 and then with our mission hospitals 00:03:39.41\00:03:41.12 and all over the world and other things, 00:03:41.15\00:03:43.08 not just in hospitals but in public health activities 00:03:43.12\00:03:45.82 and other things around the world. 00:03:45.85\00:03:47.19 Fantastic. 00:03:47.22\00:03:48.56 We set up a program now, 00:03:48.59\00:03:49.92 which I am particularly delighted with, 00:03:49.96\00:03:51.29 actually two programs, but together they allow 00:03:51.33\00:03:53.29 any Loma Linda graduate, who wants to serve abroad, 00:03:53.33\00:03:56.26 we will pay their educational debts for them, 00:03:56.30\00:03:58.73 while they go out to serve. 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.10 Wow. 00:04:00.14\00:04:01.47 So when they graduate, the biggest barrier 00:04:01.50\00:04:02.84 is the debts they have to pay, 00:04:02.87\00:04:04.21 you have to get a job to pay off the debts. 00:04:04.24\00:04:05.57 We've got a program now for any graduate 00:04:05.61\00:04:06.94 from any of our programs. 00:04:06.98\00:04:08.31 If you go abroad to serve, 00:04:08.34\00:04:09.84 we will cover your educational debts while you serve. 00:04:09.88\00:04:12.15 That's incredible. 00:04:12.18\00:04:13.52 And that's been a huge stimulus 00:04:13.55\00:04:14.88 for our students. 00:04:14.92\00:04:16.25 Now your role is obviously a lot of administration 00:04:16.28\00:04:20.72 but I know you have a personal contact 00:04:20.76\00:04:22.59 with many of your doctors, and medical professionals 00:04:22.62\00:04:26.43 who go out to serve. 00:04:26.46\00:04:27.80 Can you share a quick story of one of your graduates 00:04:27.83\00:04:30.43 who is making a difference? 00:04:30.47\00:04:32.50 Well, there is a variety of them, 00:04:32.53\00:04:33.87 of course, I could talk about. 00:04:33.90\00:04:35.24 One of the things I'm excited about now is, 00:04:35.27\00:04:36.74 well, several areas to decide where to start. 00:04:36.77\00:04:39.54 Country of Chad 10 years ago, Chad had one little 00:04:39.57\00:04:42.34 dusty hospital that hardly functioned. 00:04:42.38\00:04:43.81 Yes. 00:04:43.85\00:04:45.18 Now we've got two well functioning hospitals, 00:04:45.21\00:04:46.55 one of them is the busiest one in the country 00:04:46.58\00:04:47.92 at Bere, Chad. 00:04:47.95\00:04:49.28 And James Appel who was there, 00:04:49.32\00:04:50.65 is just now starting a new hospital 00:04:50.69\00:04:52.02 out in the Eastern Chad out in the Muslim area next 00:04:52.05\00:04:53.56 against the Sudan border. 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.26 So we are pleased with what's happened there. 00:04:55.29\00:04:57.03 Two other areas that are very exciting for me 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.46 is Malamulo hospital in Africa. 00:04:59.49\00:05:01.10 It is actually the oldest mission hospital in the church. 00:05:01.13\00:05:03.87 Started as school in 1902 and a clinic in 1915, really, 00:05:03.90\00:05:08.47 we're celebrating centennial later this year, 00:05:08.50\00:05:11.07 Malamulo, we are now making into what were calling 00:05:11.11\00:05:13.14 a Loma Linda University Field Station. 00:05:13.17\00:05:15.58 So we are putting an extra focus of development there. 00:05:15.61\00:05:18.61 We got what, four, five faculty there now, 00:05:18.65\00:05:21.28 that are based there. 00:05:21.32\00:05:22.65 We've started surgery residency program 00:05:22.68\00:05:24.35 for training specialist surgeon 00:05:24.39\00:05:25.72 and getting to start a family medicine residency program. 00:05:25.75\00:05:27.76 We've got research activities going on. 00:05:27.79\00:05:29.79 So we are taking one institution 00:05:29.82\00:05:31.39 to really develop as a training ground 00:05:31.43\00:05:33.33 for the rest of Africa 00:05:33.36\00:05:35.10 and now we're starting to do the same thing in Haiti. 00:05:35.13\00:05:37.23 Haiti has bounced back now 00:05:37.27\00:05:38.60 from the earthquake five years ago 00:05:38.63\00:05:40.30 and we are developing in into a field stations as well. 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.37 So we'll have a place for its faculty housing, 00:05:42.44\00:05:44.31 for students, for residence for faculty to go down 00:05:44.34\00:05:47.04 and do research projects another things there in Haiti. 00:05:47.08\00:05:49.24 Wonderful. 00:05:49.28\00:05:50.61 In addition to all the other places 00:05:50.65\00:05:51.98 that we are go to as well. 00:05:52.01\00:05:53.35 Yeah, yeah wonderful. 00:05:53.38\00:05:54.72 Dr. Hart, why is mission so important to you, 00:05:54.75\00:05:56.99 I know you have been involved for many years, 00:05:57.02\00:05:58.49 why is it so important to you? 00:05:58.52\00:05:59.85 Well, to me, it's where life becomes real. 00:05:59.89\00:06:04.79 I mean, I can be a good Christian in my view, 00:06:04.83\00:06:08.33 unless I'm involved in that sort of thing. 00:06:08.36\00:06:10.57 It is that service aspect that I believe 00:06:10.60\00:06:13.70 brings real satisfaction to life. 00:06:13.74\00:06:16.00 So I look at in the certain sense, Gary, 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.57 as a selfish thing. 00:06:18.61\00:06:20.08 For me to be happy, I've got to go do something 00:06:20.11\00:06:23.18 and it really gives me a satisfaction 00:06:23.21\00:06:25.05 to not only be involve myself all the emails, 00:06:25.08\00:06:28.88 50 emails I answer every night 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.25 from our graduates all over the world 00:06:30.29\00:06:32.05 managing different projects, 00:06:32.09\00:06:33.49 it's just an exciting part of life. 00:06:33.52\00:06:35.36 Viewers who want to find out more information 00:06:35.39\00:06:37.46 about Loma Linda, 00:06:37.49\00:06:38.83 what's the best way to do that? 00:06:38.86\00:06:40.20 Probably the best way is on our website LLU.EDU, 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.83 we'll give that, 00:06:42.86\00:06:44.30 you can look at the various service activities, 00:06:44.33\00:06:46.03 the schools and so on that are there. 00:06:46.07\00:06:48.10 And they keep a lot of updated projects in there, 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.31 what's going on around world. 00:06:50.34\00:06:51.77 Fantastic, thank you so much for joining us, Dr. Hart. 00:06:51.81\00:06:54.54 Thank you, it's good to be with you. 00:06:54.58\00:06:55.91 And viewers at home 00:06:55.94\00:06:57.28 please pray for Loma Linda University, 00:06:57.31\00:06:59.41 in the diverse range of various activities 00:06:59.45\00:07:02.58 their involved in, 00:07:02.62\00:07:03.95 making a difference not only in their local communities 00:07:03.99\00:07:06.05 but all around the world, touching people's life 00:07:06.09\00:07:09.09 with the hands of Jesus Christ. 00:07:09.12\00:07:10.69 Next up we'll travel to Continent of Africa. 00:07:10.73\00:07:13.19 Each Sabbath, hundreds of students gather together 00:07:18.60\00:07:21.77 to praise the Lord. 00:07:21.80\00:07:23.17 The students grab a chair 00:07:23.20\00:07:24.67 and take it to their favorite spot for Sabbath school, 00:07:24.71\00:07:27.34 a spot in the shade is highly valued 00:07:27.38\00:07:29.74 to be protected from the hot sun. 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.91 In rural Zimbabwe, 00:07:31.95\00:07:33.58 100s of students lives are being touched 00:07:33.62\00:07:35.72 by Adventist schools. 00:07:35.75\00:07:37.29 One of these schools is Solusi University. 00:07:37.32\00:07:40.89 Here students receive a Christian education 00:07:40.92\00:07:43.63 from one of the oldest Adventist schools in Africa. 00:07:43.66\00:07:47.33 These campus environments allow students to study 00:07:47.36\00:07:50.47 God's word with their friends. 00:07:50.50\00:07:52.57 Each Sabbath dozens of groups 00:07:52.60\00:07:54.74 are spread throughout the campus. 00:07:54.77\00:07:56.91 When class gets out, 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.61 they gather together in the church 00:07:58.64\00:08:00.24 to worship collectively and celebrate God's love. 00:08:00.28\00:08:03.65 Sabbath is the favorite day on campus. 00:08:03.68\00:08:06.82 The campus is made up of students 00:08:06.85\00:08:08.72 from different cultures and backgrounds. 00:08:08.75\00:08:11.72 The school's reputation has attracted students 00:08:11.75\00:08:14.19 from countries around Southern Africa. 00:08:14.22\00:08:17.39 Jeniffer is a recent graduate from Solusi, 00:08:17.43\00:08:20.23 who felt that the university environment 00:08:20.26\00:08:22.46 made a difference in her life. 00:08:22.50\00:08:25.30 I really did enjoy my stay here 00:08:25.33\00:08:28.40 because it brought about changes in my life. 00:08:28.44\00:08:31.64 I made friends from different countries 00:08:31.67\00:08:34.71 from different tribes, 00:08:34.74\00:08:36.38 so it was really interesting to be here. 00:08:36.41\00:08:40.12 When Jeniffer came here, she was not an Adventist. 00:08:40.15\00:08:43.08 She would regularly attend church 00:08:43.12\00:08:44.85 and listen to the messages with the other students. 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.36 One time while she was sitting in the church, 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.69 the pastor's words connected with her 00:08:49.72\00:08:51.99 and she knew she wanted to become an Adventist. 00:08:52.03\00:08:55.53 I really felt, well, I don't want to lose anything 00:08:55.56\00:08:59.10 when Christ comes, I want to go with Him, 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.24 I want to go home, 00:09:01.27\00:09:02.67 I want to meet Him in the clouds of heaven. 00:09:02.70\00:09:05.97 And I've seen the love 00:09:06.01\00:09:08.01 that the Seventh-day Adventist have 00:09:08.04\00:09:11.31 and it has pushed me to see that, 00:09:11.35\00:09:14.85 I can be a part of them, that we can serve this God 00:09:14.88\00:09:18.69 and we can continue to share this love. 00:09:18.72\00:09:21.82 Many students have come to know Jesus 00:09:21.86\00:09:24.39 by attending the university. 00:09:24.43\00:09:26.63 So I think the influence really came from the church, 00:09:26.66\00:09:30.47 the class room, even the cafeteria, 00:09:30.50\00:09:33.30 even when you look at the food, still spiritual, 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.67 you are eating healthy. 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.31 And students of Solusi really enjoy the food. 00:09:38.34\00:09:42.34 The kitchen staff works hard 00:09:42.38\00:09:43.85 to provide meals for all the students. 00:09:43.88\00:09:46.08 They are constantly prepping, cooking and baking 00:09:46.11\00:09:49.38 to ensure each meal is done well. 00:09:49.42\00:09:53.36 The cafeteria is the central place 00:09:53.39\00:09:55.49 for all the students come together to socialize and eat. 00:09:55.52\00:09:59.03 Unfortunately, not everyone can fit inside the cafeteria 00:09:59.06\00:10:02.60 during meal times. 00:10:02.63\00:10:03.97 It get so crowded that people have to eat out side 00:10:04.00\00:10:06.60 under the trees or anywhere they can find. 00:10:06.63\00:10:08.97 This poses a problem, when it rains 00:10:09.00\00:10:11.77 or during the heat of the day. 00:10:11.81\00:10:13.58 This quarter, a portion of your 13th Sabbath offering 00:10:13.61\00:10:16.75 will help benefit the students and staff 00:10:16.78\00:10:18.78 at Solusi University. 00:10:18.81\00:10:20.92 The cafeteria will be extended 00:10:20.95\00:10:22.98 to fit the entire campus population. 00:10:23.02\00:10:25.72 Please pray that God will continue 00:10:25.75\00:10:27.72 to bless the university 00:10:27.76\00:10:29.42 and thank you for supporting the mission 00:10:29.46\00:10:31.99 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:10:32.03\00:10:34.30 Well, that's about it for 00:10:38.17\00:10:39.50 Global Mission Snapshots today. 00:10:39.53\00:10:41.17
