Welcome back. 00:00:12.91\00:00:14.24 This is the 25 anniversary of Global Mission 00:00:14.28\00:00:17.35 an initiative that was started in 1990 00:00:17.38\00:00:20.32 by the Seventh-day Adventist World Church 00:00:20.35\00:00:22.15 and my guest is Pastor Michael Ryan 00:00:22.18\00:00:24.99 who is the first director of Global Mission. 00:00:25.02\00:00:28.29 Mike, thanks for joining us. 00:00:28.32\00:00:30.29 Yes, I'm glad to be here. I was the first director. 00:00:30.33\00:00:33.33 Yeah, 25 years ago. Yes. 00:00:33.36\00:00:35.43 Now when you came into that position, 00:00:35.46\00:00:39.77 that responsibility 00:00:39.80\00:00:41.14 what was the emplace beside the concept? 00:00:41.17\00:00:44.37 Well, they have voted Global Mission as a concept 00:00:44.41\00:00:49.38 at the annual council in 89 00:00:49.41\00:00:51.51 but between then and the session 00:00:51.55\00:00:53.25 really not anything have been done 00:00:53.28\00:00:55.32 and they knew what they wanted to do. 00:00:55.35\00:00:56.92 They knew that they wanted to put churches in places 00:00:56.95\00:01:00.82 where we didn't have them and they named as priorities, 00:01:00.86\00:01:04.33 they were then former Soviet Union, China, 00:01:04.36\00:01:07.16 India and then the Islamic world. 00:01:07.20\00:01:09.76 And but beyond that it was sort of a-- 00:01:09.80\00:01:12.77 they had a rough outline 00:01:12.80\00:01:14.84 but none of the mechanics of the program were in place. 00:01:14.87\00:01:18.47 There really wasn't funding set aside other than 00:01:18.51\00:01:22.28 to cover the operating 00:01:22.31\00:01:23.75 and then they called for study centers 00:01:23.78\00:01:27.18 and they called for a lot of things 00:01:27.22\00:01:28.65 but there really wasn't funding. 00:01:28.68\00:01:30.02 So it was kind of a name and so to begin with 00:01:30.05\00:01:33.25 you just, everybody was wonderful Global Mission 00:01:33.29\00:01:35.56 what is it, you know, 00:01:35.59\00:01:36.93 so it was that kind of a thing. 00:01:36.96\00:01:38.29 Right. 00:01:38.33\00:01:39.66 Now you are the time well, living in Asia 00:01:39.69\00:01:42.63 and you kind of liked this idea 00:01:42.66\00:01:44.60 and you started running with it, 00:01:44.63\00:01:45.97 tell me what you were doing. 00:01:46.00\00:01:47.34 Well, at first they started presenting it about 88 00:01:47.37\00:01:52.44 and I went to a couple meetings 00:01:52.47\00:01:55.44 and so we came back and I thought, 00:01:55.48\00:01:57.31 hey, this is great idea. 00:01:57.35\00:01:58.71 And so we quickly analyzed the territory 00:01:58.75\00:02:02.68 and divided it into little groups of a million 00:02:02.72\00:02:05.02 and we discovered that we had 27 of them 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.69 that didn't have any presence. 00:02:07.72\00:02:09.09 In which area? 00:02:09.12\00:02:10.46 Most of it was in Southeast Asia, Singapore, Thailand, 00:02:10.49\00:02:14.30 but also Indonesia had a fair number of them. 00:02:14.33\00:02:17.57 And so, you know, 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.77 at that juncture we said, well, hey, you know, 00:02:19.80\00:02:21.90 let's just go ahead and get started. 00:02:21.94\00:02:23.37 So we put everything on the computer 00:02:23.41\00:02:26.88 and back in those days the computer wasn't 00:02:26.91\00:02:29.14 what it was today and, you know, 00:02:29.18\00:02:31.41 and went about organizing, 00:02:31.45\00:02:33.31 we met with the unions, develop plans 00:02:33.35\00:02:35.32 and I can remember my office we had several shelves of plans 00:02:35.35\00:02:40.16 but time we got to the GC session in 1990 00:02:40.19\00:02:44.23 we had actually eliminated 00:02:44.26\00:02:46.19 a lot of them in a lot of places. 00:02:46.23\00:02:48.70 I mean, they aren't intruders 00:02:48.73\00:02:50.07 we planted churches and sent teams in. 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.73 So it kind of began there 00:02:52.77\00:02:55.47 and so, you know, as I looked around 00:02:55.50\00:02:56.84 what is successful 00:02:56.87\00:02:58.47 well, then you begin to develop methodology. 00:02:58.51\00:03:00.38 Right. 00:03:00.41\00:03:01.74 And so, Mike, today most Seventh-day Adventist 00:03:01.78\00:03:04.51 are familiar with church planting in new areas, 00:03:04.55\00:03:08.32 Global Mission pioneers, Global Mission centers 00:03:08.35\00:03:11.62 well, these weren't there when you started. 00:03:11.65\00:03:14.02 No, no, they weren't. 00:03:14.06\00:03:16.73 Matter of fact the Global Mission 00:03:16.76\00:03:19.13 pioneer program actually was an idea 00:03:19.16\00:03:21.00 that was born in east Indonesia. 00:03:21.03\00:03:23.80 I went out there one time to visit 00:03:23.83\00:03:25.50 and they said, oh, we are just sending 00:03:25.53\00:03:26.87 laypeople out to these areas 00:03:26.90\00:03:28.54 and we, the mother church kind of sponsors them 00:03:28.57\00:03:32.97 and they have an assignment to plant a church. 00:03:33.01\00:03:34.71 Well, I went out to visit several of them 00:03:34.74\00:03:36.48 and they were meeting in living rooms, 00:03:36.51\00:03:37.98 houses, they were meeting in apartments, 00:03:38.01\00:03:39.55 they were meet-- you know, 00:03:39.58\00:03:40.92 and I thought, you know, it's not a bad idea. 00:03:40.95\00:03:43.28 You know, the investment you have is very little. 00:03:43.32\00:03:46.35 These people all speak the language, 00:03:46.39\00:03:47.82 there is nobody who is happen to counsel them 00:03:47.86\00:03:49.89 on how fast they can get in trouble by saying this 00:03:49.92\00:03:52.39 or saying that, you know. 00:03:52.43\00:03:53.76 And so them I thought, well, you know, this is an idea 00:03:53.80\00:03:55.76 we can carry with us. 00:03:55.80\00:03:57.27 And yeah, so, you know, and to say-- you know, 00:03:57.30\00:04:02.84 I thought of it or I dreamed of it I don't believe that. 00:04:02.87\00:04:05.04 I think, I think the Lord just, you know, 00:04:05.07\00:04:06.88 let me come across things and then that, you know, 00:04:06.91\00:04:11.58 were good ideas but then you have a good team. 00:04:11.61\00:04:16.79 Just the Lord led in getting very good people together 00:04:16.82\00:04:20.02 and little by little the pieces began to grow. 00:04:20.06\00:04:23.06 What about the Global Mission centers 00:04:23.09\00:04:24.93 that used to be called study centers 00:04:24.96\00:04:26.29 that you started, 00:04:26.33\00:04:28.46 what was your vision for them? 00:04:28.50\00:04:30.03 Well, of course that the mandate 00:04:30.07\00:04:32.20 and the document that was voted in 89 00:04:32.23\00:04:34.30 at the annual counsel 00:04:34.34\00:04:36.00 was that we should have study centers to learn 00:04:36.04\00:04:39.34 methods of how we were to go 00:04:39.37\00:04:42.14 about our work in establishing churches 00:04:42.18\00:04:45.51 in these vast populations 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.85 in which we had nothing, I mean nothing. 00:04:47.88\00:04:49.98 And of course they call for one for Buddhist, 00:04:50.02\00:04:54.06 one for Hindus, one for Islam, one for Jewish, 00:04:54.09\00:04:56.79 Jewish study center and then there was a little, hint, 00:04:56.83\00:05:01.23 that, you know, you could add others 00:05:01.26\00:05:02.83 as there were needed 00:05:02.86\00:05:04.27 And so the idea was to get, to get something going 00:05:04.30\00:05:07.54 but the biggest challenges that we ran into 00:05:07.57\00:05:11.11 was that there wasn't any money. 00:05:11.14\00:05:12.47 They didn't give you any money to pay any salaries 00:05:12.51\00:05:14.71 or any budgets. 00:05:14.74\00:05:16.08 And so when they first started like, 00:05:16.11\00:05:18.01 I don't know we get divisions to pay half of it 00:05:18.05\00:05:19.98 and then we would kind of put in a little money 00:05:20.02\00:05:22.32 and little by little well, here's some travel budget 00:05:22.35\00:05:25.29 we just sort of built it in to the point now 00:05:25.32\00:05:28.42 where, you know, you know, they are on regular budgets 00:05:28.46\00:05:33.63 most of them with travel and their functioning centers 00:05:33.66\00:05:36.87 that really contributes. 00:05:36.90\00:05:38.23 And I know that you have repeated over and over again 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.24 that those centers as to come up with new models for us to 00:05:40.27\00:05:43.51 more effectively do, because before 1990, 00:05:43.54\00:05:46.51 Mike, I don't want to say 00:05:46.54\00:05:47.88 we ignored other religious groups 00:05:47.91\00:05:50.05 but there weren't central of the radar. 00:05:50.08\00:05:51.68 No. No. 00:05:51.71\00:05:53.52 And I think that we just didn't think 00:05:53.55\00:05:58.69 in terms of contextualization. 00:05:58.72\00:06:01.29 And people groups. 00:06:01.32\00:06:02.66 Yeah, we had kind of one model 00:06:02.69\00:06:04.76 and we took our model around the world 00:06:04.79\00:06:06.96 but then we and after 15 or 20 years somebody said, 00:06:07.00\00:06:09.60 you know, this model is not working real great 00:06:09.63\00:06:11.30 because we still have all these vast territories 00:06:11.33\00:06:13.44 with no churches in them. 00:06:13.47\00:06:15.00 And, you know, 00:06:15.04\00:06:16.87 you can go to certain places in the world 00:06:16.91\00:06:19.01 where maybe 60, 70 percent of the world lives 00:06:19.04\00:06:22.68 and publicevangelism 00:06:22.71\00:06:24.25 simply is not going to be accepted 00:06:24.28\00:06:26.48 because you either end up in prison 00:06:26.51\00:06:28.45 or they will kill you or, you know, 00:06:28.48\00:06:29.82 and you just can't use that you have to choose 00:06:29.85\00:06:32.42 something else and besides that you need to choose 00:06:32.45\00:06:35.02 something that identifies with the needs of the people 00:06:35.06\00:06:40.16 that they can appreciate. 00:06:40.20\00:06:41.63 And of course it didn't take rocket science 00:06:41.66\00:06:45.73 if you just pause and read 00:06:45.77\00:06:48.64 that really all people will identity with Christ method. 00:06:48.67\00:06:53.04 And if you just practice that you don't have to worry 00:06:53.07\00:06:55.31 about creating a lot of things. 00:06:55.34\00:06:56.85 So I think this is how it's kind of progressed. 00:06:56.88\00:06:58.61 Wonderful. 00:06:58.65\00:06:59.98 Mike, thanks so much for sharing with us. 00:07:00.02\00:07:02.15 And since 1990 when Global Mission 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.69 began the Seventh-day Adventist church has grown 00:07:04.72\00:07:06.76 from six million members to more than 18 million, 00:07:06.79\00:07:10.39 thousands of new congregations have been planted 00:07:10.43\00:07:12.76 among new people groups. 00:07:12.79\00:07:14.63 And so thank you for your continuing prayers, 00:07:14.66\00:07:16.67 your support, you financial support 00:07:16.70\00:07:18.63 and your involvement in mission that helps make this possible. 00:07:18.67\00:07:22.30 Next up we travel to Zimbabwe. 00:07:22.34\00:07:24.24 In Bulawayo, Zimbabwe a small orphanage is making 00:07:30.95\00:07:34.78 a huge difference in children's lives. 00:07:34.82\00:07:37.82 Around the world Seventh-day Adventist are aiming to give 00:07:37.85\00:07:41.22 children the best opportunity to succeed in life. 00:07:41.26\00:07:44.66 Schools, churches and summer camps 00:07:44.69\00:07:47.46 are just some examples of how church members 00:07:47.50\00:07:49.36 are implementing programs for children's growth. 00:07:49.40\00:07:52.40 These programs focus holistically on physical, 00:07:52.43\00:07:55.27 mental, and spiritual growth to equip children for life 00:07:55.30\00:07:59.74 and guide them toward a relationship with Jesus. 00:07:59.77\00:08:03.48 In Southern Africa you can find many examples 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.71 of children focused initiatives. 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.98 Education is highly valued in this part of the world. 00:08:08.02\00:08:11.42 Sometimes children are not given 00:08:11.45\00:08:13.22 the same level of opportunity. 00:08:13.25\00:08:15.66 In the country of Zimbabwe the Queen Elizabeth 00:08:15.69\00:08:18.39 Adventist Children's Home 00:08:18.43\00:08:20.00 or QEACH is the only orphanage officially operated 00:08:20.03\00:08:23.83 by the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:08:23.87\00:08:26.40 Adventist began managing and operating 00:08:26.43\00:08:28.30 this orphanage in the 1980s. 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.61 These children have been orphaned, 00:08:30.64\00:08:32.61
