Welcome back to Cairo Egypt. 00:00:12.51\00:00:14.81 Next up we travel to Pune, India 00:00:14.84\00:00:17.05 with Rick McEdward. 00:00:17.08\00:00:18.71 Thank you, Gary. 00:00:18.75\00:00:20.08 I'm here in India. 00:00:20.12\00:00:21.72 So much color, so much spice, so many people 00:00:21.75\00:00:24.85 are focusing on this country. 00:00:24.89\00:00:27.82 They want to come, they want to visit, 00:00:27.86\00:00:29.19 they want to see 00:00:29.22\00:00:30.89 but there is a larger challenge 00:00:30.93\00:00:33.33 and here with me 00:00:33.36\00:00:35.03 is Andrew Tompkins, 00:00:35.06\00:00:37.23 the associate director 00:00:37.27\00:00:39.27 for the Center for South Asian Religions. 00:00:39.30\00:00:42.00 And Andrew we're here, where are we at right here? 00:00:42.04\00:00:45.54 Well, we're right here in front of my home here in India. 00:00:45.57\00:00:48.58 Okay. 00:00:48.61\00:00:49.94 And how long have you been coming and going to India? 00:00:49.98\00:00:53.92 Often on for the past nine years actually. 00:00:53.95\00:00:56.69 All right, tell us about how you got started here. 00:00:56.72\00:01:00.32 I got started kind of in a strange way. 00:01:00.36\00:01:02.86 I was interested in going somewhere for a summer 00:01:02.89\00:01:05.69 and I ended up coming to India, liked it, 00:01:05.73\00:01:08.90 came and went several more times 00:01:08.93\00:01:10.27 and eventually lived here for several years. 00:01:10.30\00:01:12.03 Wow. So that was pretty life changing. 00:01:12.07\00:01:15.54 Yes. In many ways. 00:01:15.57\00:01:16.91 Many ways. 00:01:16.94\00:01:18.27 It set your course in ministry. Right. 00:01:18.31\00:01:21.04 But I think there's another way, right. 00:01:21.08\00:01:22.44 Yeah, I also found my spouse 00:01:23.08\00:01:25.88 who I married to now for five years. 00:01:25.91\00:01:27.92 She is Indian, very happily married together. 00:01:27.95\00:01:30.79 And you're serving together here? 00:01:30.82\00:01:32.32 Correct. Yeah. 00:01:32.35\00:01:33.92 You know, being the center, 00:01:33.96\00:01:36.12 the associate director for Center 00:01:36.16\00:01:37.76 for South Asian Religions 00:01:37.79\00:01:39.13 it's a big responsibility, 00:01:39.16\00:01:41.33 there's a lot of misunderstanding. 00:01:41.36\00:01:43.30 But I wonder if for a minute you could talk about 00:01:43.33\00:01:47.47 the challenge that we face in South Asia. 00:01:47.50\00:01:51.74 Yeah, there is a variety of challenges 00:01:51.77\00:01:55.11 as you hinted at the beginning India is a complex place, 00:01:55.14\00:01:58.81 many people, 00:01:58.85\00:02:00.42 they come from various social backgrounds 00:02:00.45\00:02:04.32 and also various religious backgrounds. 00:02:04.35\00:02:06.62 Majority are Hindu but a huge number of Muslims, 00:02:06.65\00:02:09.99 Sikh's, Jains and then some Christians as well 00:02:10.03\00:02:12.86 that itself is a major challenge 00:02:12.89\00:02:14.70 how do you interact 00:02:14.73\00:02:16.06 with all these different types of people 00:02:16.10\00:02:17.43 and meaningful and respectful ways. 00:02:17.47\00:02:20.17 So navigating all that is not easy, 00:02:20.20\00:02:23.61 it takes a lot of patience and learning 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.84 but we're doing that 00:02:25.87\00:02:27.38 trying our best to do that here. 00:02:27.41\00:02:28.98 we know, you are, we are saying 00:02:29.01\00:02:31.21 actually describes a really complex place, 00:02:31.25\00:02:34.88 really complex people and I mean 00:02:34.92\00:02:37.05 South Asia is made up of much more than just India, 00:02:37.09\00:02:39.52 it's Nepal, Sri Lanka, et cetera. 00:02:39.55\00:02:41.82 So there's actually 00:02:41.86\00:02:43.36 a deeply rooted tradition of various religions. 00:02:43.39\00:02:46.03 Yes. 00:02:46.06\00:02:47.40 And as we think about that 00:02:47.43\00:02:49.53 how do you feel about to the way 00:02:49.56\00:02:52.30 the church has related 00:02:52.33\00:02:54.10 whether it's faith or service or God's love to the community? 00:02:54.14\00:02:57.61 Has it been the fullness to head all these, 00:02:57.64\00:03:00.81 these segment of society? 00:03:00.84\00:03:02.18 Right. 00:03:02.21\00:03:03.55 Certainly we have seen positive things 00:03:03.58\00:03:05.11 a church has done for the last-- 00:03:05.15\00:03:07.72 more than 100 years but also at the same time 00:03:07.75\00:03:11.22 we find there have been times 00:03:11.25\00:03:13.15 and maybe we haven't done as good as we could 00:03:13.19\00:03:14.86 in understanding the local culture 00:03:14.89\00:03:16.89 the local religion, how best to relate 00:03:16.93\00:03:19.23 to people who come from such a different background 00:03:19.26\00:03:22.06 in the normal Christian 00:03:22.10\00:03:24.03 that we might find in the west and so on. 00:03:24.07\00:03:26.23 That has been a challenge 00:03:26.27\00:03:27.60 how do we relate to these people 00:03:27.64\00:03:29.17 in a way they can understand 00:03:29.20\00:03:30.54 and be respectful at the same time. 00:03:30.57\00:03:33.88 So part of your role would then be 00:03:33.91\00:03:35.74 to help the Christians, Adventist 00:03:35.78\00:03:38.15 understand the culture 00:03:38.18\00:03:41.58 and the religious context that you have, right? 00:03:41.62\00:03:43.59 Right and we believe that God of course loves all people 00:03:43.62\00:03:48.72 and He is gone before us 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.53 and part of our job is to understand 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.23 how He is already working with people 00:03:52.26\00:03:54.33 and how we can join with Him 00:03:54.36\00:03:56.36 in understanding those people better 00:03:56.40\00:03:58.03 and then working together, training each other 00:03:58.07\00:04:02.30 to also reach out 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.67 beyond the normal borders that we have. 00:04:04.71\00:04:07.74 You know, when you speak of where God is working, 00:04:07.78\00:04:10.65 you know, reminded of some 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.95 beautiful stories around the world. 00:04:12.98\00:04:15.28 I wondered if there's any story that kind of hits you 00:04:15.32\00:04:18.75 that you'd like to share with our viewing audience. 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.39 Sure. 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.56 As I've been here in the last few years 00:04:23.59\00:04:26.03 we spent quite a bit of time 00:04:26.06\00:04:28.23 working with young people 00:04:28.26\00:04:29.60 who grew up in the church 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.83 but actually have not reached out 00:04:31.87\00:04:34.67 to many non-Christians 00:04:34.70\00:04:37.01 and it's been inspiring to me to watch 00:04:37.04\00:04:38.91 particularly for young people who have spent 00:04:38.94\00:04:41.54 week after week coming to me 00:04:41.58\00:04:43.75 and we engage in discussions 00:04:43.78\00:04:46.05 on how best to relate to people, 00:04:46.08\00:04:47.82 how best to interact with others 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.65 and they have then taken that and gone out into the community 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.79 and are engaging with other types of people 00:04:52.82\00:04:55.42 that in the past they would not have even talked to. 00:04:55.46\00:04:58.39 Sometimes in multi-religious society 00:04:58.43\00:05:01.80 people tend to meet only with their own people 00:05:01.83\00:05:06.07 and don't tend to get acquainted or build friendships 00:05:06.10\00:05:08.67 and sounds from what you're saying 00:05:08.70\00:05:11.04 that that's happening now. 00:05:11.07\00:05:12.41 Yeah, definitely and it's been 00:05:12.44\00:05:14.68 challenging for them at times. 00:05:14.71\00:05:16.18 It's not natural sometimes for us to do that 00:05:16.21\00:05:19.81 but at the same time they feel 00:05:19.85\00:05:22.18 that it's been a blessing to them, 00:05:22.22\00:05:24.39 not just for the people they're reaching out to 00:05:24.42\00:05:26.12 but also in their own growth in life. 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.19 They've grown spiritually through the experience. 00:05:28.22\00:05:31.66 You know, I really appreciate the thought and perseverance 00:05:31.69\00:05:36.30 that you put into your work here. 00:05:36.33\00:05:38.60 You know, as we think about the mission around the world, 00:05:38.63\00:05:43.20 you know, Ellen White says 00:05:43.24\00:05:44.57 some that we should not be one-sided in our work, 00:05:44.61\00:05:47.84 we should have multiple dimensions 00:05:47.88\00:05:50.11 in what we do and how we, 00:05:50.15\00:05:52.18 how we present the glory of God, 00:05:52.21\00:05:54.42 the love God to the nation's. 00:05:54.45\00:05:56.42 And I just want to through out to you audience 00:05:56.45\00:05:59.85 that maybe there's a new way 00:05:59.89\00:06:01.39 that you can share with your neighbor, 00:06:01.42\00:06:03.29 love your community 00:06:03.32\00:06:04.66 and be the glory of God in your community. 00:06:04.69\00:06:08.13 Back to you, Gary. 00:06:08.16\00:06:09.60 Welcome back to Cairo, Egypt 00:06:10.60\00:06:12.50 and more specifically to the Nile River. 00:06:12.53\00:06:15.34 Coming up next 00:06:15.37\00:06:16.71 we go to another part of the world. 00:06:16.74\00:06:18.07 In northern Thailand a village sits high 00:06:25.21\00:06:27.42 on top of the mountainous landscape. 00:06:27.45\00:06:29.28 This is an ideal place to grow tea and other herbs. 00:06:34.52\00:06:37.83 This region of Thailand has a strong Chinese influence. 00:06:37.86\00:06:41.50 Many the older people in the village 00:06:41.53\00:06:43.33 still speak the language. 00:06:43.37\00:06:45.03 Most of the younger villagers only speak Thai 00:06:45.07\00:06:47.44 or local hill tribe languages. 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.60 Retaining their cultural heritage 00:06:49.64\00:06:51.34 has always been important 00:06:51.37\00:06:52.71 to the older members of this village 00:06:52.74\00:06:54.38 but over the years that has been a struggle 00:06:54.41\00:06:56.28 to keep the Chinese language alive 00:06:56.31\00:06:58.21 in the younger generations. 00:06:58.25\00:07:00.28 A few years ago, two young administer in China 00:07:00.32\00:07:03.12 heard about the need to revitalize the language 00:07:03.15\00:07:05.19 among the youth in the community. 00:07:05.22\00:07:06.86 So they left their home in China 00:07:06.89\00:07:08.39 and traveled all the way 00:07:08.42\00:07:09.76 to the small village in Thailand 00:07:09.79\00:07:11.13 to teach Chinese to the children. 00:07:11.16\00:07:12.63 Eventually, they started their own school. 00:07:18.03\00:07:21.10 Parents in the community were so happy 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.04 that their children can learn more 00:07:23.07\00:07:24.51 about their heritage and culture. 00:07:24.54\00:07:26.57 Over the years 00:07:26.61\00:07:27.94 more Chinese missionaries have come to work 00:07:27.98\00:07:29.88 at this Global Mission Center of Influence. 00:07:29.91\00:07:32.61 God is doing amazing things through His willing servants. 00:07:32.65\00:07:35.92 The school has grown in size and support. 00:07:41.19\00:07:43.99 The children like coming to this school so much 00:07:44.03\00:07:46.76 that they are willing to attend this school 00:07:46.80\00:07:48.60 right after their regular school. 00:07:48.63\00:07:50.30 Some of them are even picked up in the truck 00:07:50.33\00:07:52.43 so they don't have to make the long trek across town. 00:07:52.47\00:07:55.60 Children of all ages come to learn and socialize. 00:07:55.64\00:07:59.01 In recent years 00:07:59.04\00:08:00.38 they have also started a dormitory 00:08:00.41\00:08:02.01 where students live and work. 00:08:02.04\00:08:04.18 The Chinese missionaries gathered to pray 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.25 for the students who were in their care. 00:08:06.28\00:08:08.42 The students get room and board 00:08:08.45\00:08:09.98 and attend the local schools by day 00:08:10.02\00:08:12.09 because they're staying in the dorm 00:08:12.12\00:08:13.76 they learn Chinese much faster. 00:08:13.79\00:08:15.72 Several of the students have become 00:08:15.76\00:08:17.43 Seventh-day Adventists. 00:08:17.46\00:08:19.96 Thanks to the Center Influence, 00:08:20.00\00:08:21.73 many of the students are now skilled 00:08:21.76\00:08:23.73 in speaking the Chinese language 00:08:23.77\00:08:25.73 and the younger students in particular 00:08:25.77\00:08:27.80 seemed to learn the fastest. 00:08:27.84\00:08:29.37 This school not only has academic influence 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.71 but includes spiritual education as well. 00:08:39.75\00:08:42.58 Through this school, 00:08:42.62\00:08:43.95 many other children have been introduced to Jesus. 00:08:43.99\00:08:46.59 They pray before class 00:08:46.62\00:08:48.12 and their lessons frequently revolve around God's word. 00:08:48.16\00:08:51.43 Each morning dormitory students 00:08:51.46\00:08:53.19 gather together for morning devotions. 00:08:53.23\00:08:55.56 As breakfast is being prepared by staff members, 00:08:55.60\00:08:58.23 they sing, pray and praise God for His blessings. 00:08:58.27\00:09:01.97 Jesus is making His way 00:09:02.00\00:09:03.61 into the people's hearts in this village. 00:09:03.64\00:09:05.61 If it wasn't for assessing the needs of this community 00:09:11.75\00:09:14.62 these children may never have wanted 00:09:14.65\00:09:16.38 to learn about Jesus. 00:09:16.42\00:09:17.75 Please pray that this Chinese Center of Influence 00:09:17.79\00:09:20.36 will continue to bless the lives of the villagers. 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.59 Pray that God's love 00:09:23.63\00:09:24.96 can spread throughout Thailand and beyond. 00:09:24.99\00:09:27.66 Thank you, for supporting 00:09:27.70\00:09:29.03 Global Mission projects like this.
