A nurse making a difference 00:00:10.64\00:00:12.04 thanks to an Adventist school in Sri Lanka, 00:00:12.07\00:00:14.88 hopes and dreams for Adventist education 00:00:14.91\00:00:17.38 in Timor-Leste 00:00:17.41\00:00:18.75 and what happens when a boy 00:00:18.78\00:00:20.35 falls out of a tree and survives, 00:00:20.38\00:00:23.08 those stories and more coming up next. 00:00:23.12\00:00:30.19 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:30.23\00:00:32.69 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:32.73\00:00:35.60 He gave us a mission. 00:00:35.63\00:00:38.43 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:38.47\00:00:43.10 telling them of His love." 00:00:43.14\00:00:45.74 This is our mission. 00:00:45.77\00:00:47.81 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:47.84\00:00:49.71 Hello, and welcome to today's program coming to you 00:00:55.98\00:00:58.92 from the beautiful city of Yangon in Myanmar, 00:00:58.95\00:01:03.02 formerly known as Burma. 00:01:03.06\00:01:04.66 You know, if you stand here 00:01:04.69\00:01:06.03 in the center of this capital city 00:01:06.06\00:01:08.23 and you imagine and 3,000 mile radius 00:01:08.26\00:01:11.60 and a circle going all around that some 5,000 kilometers 00:01:11.63\00:01:16.64 in this relatively small area 60 percent 00:01:16.67\00:01:20.14 of the world's population lives. 00:01:20.18\00:01:22.28 That's a huge amount of people and these are people 00:01:22.31\00:01:25.21 who tend to live in poverty, 00:01:25.25\00:01:27.22 they represent major world religions 00:01:27.25\00:01:29.85 other than Christianity. 00:01:29.88\00:01:31.92 On today's program we will be looking at mission 00:01:31.95\00:01:33.92 right here in this country, 00:01:33.96\00:01:35.49 we'll also be traveling to Timor-Leste. 00:01:35.52\00:01:37.73 But first up let's go to Sri Lanka. 00:01:37.76\00:01:39.76 Sri Lanka is an island nation 00:01:46.27\00:01:47.90 off the southeast coast to India. 00:01:47.94\00:01:50.34 Because of its natural beauty and location 00:01:50.37\00:01:52.77 it is known as the Pearl at the Indian Ocean. 00:01:52.81\00:01:56.54 Sri Lanka is a diverse country, 00:01:56.58\00:01:58.35 its home to many religious ethnicities and languages 00:01:58.38\00:02:01.28 with a predominantly Buddhist heritage. 00:02:01.32\00:02:04.19 The Seventh-day Adventist church membership here 00:02:04.22\00:02:06.25 is only about 4,000 members and 37 churches 00:02:06.29\00:02:09.99 in a population of some 20 million people. 00:02:10.03\00:02:14.30 Lakpahana Adventist College and Seminary serves 00:02:14.33\00:02:17.07 as Sri Lanka's only training center 00:02:17.10\00:02:19.00 for church workers. 00:02:19.03\00:02:20.57 With a growing membership 00:02:20.60\00:02:21.94 this school means a lot to mission. 00:02:21.97\00:02:24.07 From its humble beginnings Lakpahana is responsible 00:02:24.11\00:02:26.94 for new members, health workers, 00:02:26.98\00:02:29.24 administrators and pastors to the mission field 00:02:29.28\00:02:32.15 in Sri Lanka and abroad. 00:02:32.18\00:02:35.25 Currently there are some 370 students attending this school 00:02:35.28\00:02:39.45 with 85 percent of the student body 00:02:39.49\00:02:41.42 from other religious groups. 00:02:41.46\00:02:43.02 Lakpahana has a tremendous work and responsibility. 00:02:43.06\00:02:47.96 Several former Lakpahana students have met Jesus here. 00:02:48.00\00:02:51.57 Through education church or branch Sabbath school 00:02:51.60\00:02:54.87 people like Jaya Dias have had their lives turned 180 degrees. 00:02:54.90\00:03:00.11 Jaya comes from a non-Christian background. 00:03:02.68\00:03:05.08 She found in Lakpahana a place to live out her new faith. 00:03:05.11\00:03:08.88 Here she learned values and principals 00:03:08.92\00:03:11.05 that guide her life today. 00:03:11.09\00:03:13.02 Now Jaya works a mentor and supervisor 00:03:13.05\00:03:15.72 at Lakeside Adventist Hospital in the city of Kandy. 00:03:15.76\00:03:19.33 Here she has a unique opportunity 00:03:19.36\00:03:21.16 to connect with people through healing and teaching. 00:03:21.20\00:03:24.93 As Jaya meets patients and nurses 00:03:24.97\00:03:27.04 she emphasizes that our body is the temple of God, 00:03:27.07\00:03:30.87 therefore we must maintain it. 00:03:30.91\00:03:33.58 With words of encouragement and sincere care 00:03:33.61\00:03:36.31 Jaya finds a way into every heart. 00:03:36.34\00:03:39.55 For her this is an opportunity to touch others as Jesus did 00:03:39.58\00:03:43.89 and show them the light of His love. 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.82 I really blessed to be part of God's family. 00:03:46.86\00:03:51.96 I really thank God for picking me 00:03:51.99\00:03:54.10 particularly to serve Him, 00:03:54.13\00:03:56.26 okay, otherwise I would have been another tea plucker. 00:03:56.30\00:04:00.24 God really blessed me of stay at Lakpahana. 00:04:00.27\00:04:04.74 Jaya is grateful for having access to Christian education. 00:04:04.77\00:04:08.31 This education has made all the difference in her life. 00:04:08.34\00:04:11.11 Lakpahana Adventist College is now in urgent need 00:04:17.62\00:04:21.22 of your support for expansion. 00:04:21.26\00:04:23.39 The membership has outgrown 00:04:23.43\00:04:24.83 their humble meeting place of worship. 00:04:24.86\00:04:27.43 We simply don't have enough seats 00:04:27.46\00:04:30.40 and some of them who are sitting on the balcony 00:04:30.43\00:04:33.10 down there in the chapel 00:04:33.13\00:04:34.47 and even we need to put some extra chairs in the corridor 00:04:34.50\00:04:38.21 in order to accommodate all over them 00:04:38.24\00:04:41.14 who come to the church. 00:04:41.18\00:04:43.21 Lakpahana needs a dedicated church building 00:04:43.24\00:04:45.91 to accommodate God's people 00:04:45.95\00:04:47.48 and receive many more every Sabbath. 00:04:47.52\00:04:50.09 As Lakpahana workers do their part to fill God's church 00:04:50.12\00:04:53.66 please pray for the many challenges they face. 00:04:53.69\00:04:56.93 This quarter you can take part in the building project 00:04:56.96\00:04:59.86 through your 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:04:59.89\00:05:01.66 I'm delighted to be talking to my friend Pastor Gavin Johns 00:05:12.04\00:05:15.81 who's the director for Adventist Mission 00:05:15.84\00:05:17.95 here in Myanmar. 00:05:17.98\00:05:19.31 It's great to see you again, Gavin. 00:05:19.35\00:05:20.78 Great. Great. 00:05:20.82\00:05:22.15 And we are here in the middle of summer 00:05:22.18\00:05:24.19 so it's really warm. 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.15 Can you introduce our viewers to the country Myanmar? 00:05:26.19\00:05:30.09 Many of us more familiar with the name Burma 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.63 but just introduce us to your country. 00:05:32.66\00:05:34.36 Sure. Sure. 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.26 Myanmar is part of Southeast Asia 00:05:36.30\00:05:40.54 an its between China, India, Thailand, Laos, 00:05:40.57\00:05:47.88 and it has a lot of neighbors. 00:05:47.91\00:05:50.38 Its a wide country. 00:05:50.41\00:05:52.25 The population is about 53 million 00:05:52.28\00:05:57.39 and about 85 percent of that population are Buddhist 00:05:57.42\00:06:02.69 and the Burma has a lot of tribes in Myanmar, 00:06:02.72\00:06:06.73 135 major tribes and Bamar is the main tribe. 00:06:06.76\00:06:11.80 And Bamar makes up about half of the population. 00:06:11.83\00:06:15.84 It's a very friendly country. 00:06:15.87\00:06:17.51 Yes, I've experienced that. 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.07 Now 135 tribes so does that mean there's 135 languages? 00:06:19.11\00:06:25.71 There's about-- there's about nearly 6,000. 00:06:25.75\00:06:31.99 All right, well, that's quite a challenge. 00:06:32.02\00:06:34.99 Well, can you introduce us now 00:06:35.02\00:06:37.59 to the Adventist church in this country? 00:06:37.63\00:06:40.56 The Adventist church in our country 00:06:40.60\00:06:44.73 is about 100 years old now. 00:06:44.77\00:06:47.84 Two colporteurs came to the country selling books 00:06:47.87\00:06:52.44 and eventually they met two Burma people, 00:06:52.47\00:06:57.95 a brother and a sister, Umamav-- 00:06:57.98\00:07:01.68 and from them they met him, 00:07:01.72\00:07:05.12 they introduced them to the church. 00:07:05.15\00:07:07.19 Eventually Umamav-- visited India 00:07:07.22\00:07:10.33 and he was able to invite some workers to come and work 00:07:10.36\00:07:13.16 in Burma as it was then owned. 00:07:13.19\00:07:16.73 And then eventually the church grew from there. 00:07:16.77\00:07:19.50 Wow. 00:07:19.53\00:07:20.87 So more than 30,000 members you have? 00:07:20.90\00:07:23.20 We have more than 30,000 members now. 00:07:23.24\00:07:25.71 We have five missions 00:07:25.74\00:07:27.64 and the union is situated in Yangon 00:07:27.68\00:07:33.55 and we have about 300 workers over 100 ordained pastors. 00:07:33.58\00:07:38.65 So they are too employed by the church. 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.29 Now Gavin, when we look at the history of the church 00:07:41.32\00:07:44.53 for many viewers who are Adventist 00:07:44.56\00:07:47.70 their knowledge of this country 00:07:47.73\00:07:49.13 is through the stories of Eric B. Hare. 00:07:49.16\00:07:51.93 What is the significance of Eric B. Hare 00:07:51.97\00:07:53.97 to the church in this country? 00:07:54.00\00:07:55.97 Eric B. Hare is the most outstanding person 00:07:56.00\00:07:59.67 well known by the church 00:07:59.71\00:08:01.78 because he was the one that came to Burma 00:08:01.81\00:08:04.65 and you know, he sort of started the work here. 00:08:04.68\00:08:08.52 And in fact, he is well known 00:08:08.55\00:08:10.15 because of his down to earth attitude. 00:08:10.19\00:08:13.72 He usually visit the villages, eat in their homes, 00:08:13.76\00:08:17.23 eat the fish paste 00:08:17.26\00:08:18.59 that even they used to give him, you know. 00:08:18.63\00:08:19.96 Yes. 00:08:20.00\00:08:21.33 Because there was nothing special those days. 00:08:21.36\00:08:23.70 Sleep on a bamboo floors. So he is well-known. 00:08:23.73\00:08:27.54 And I think he is well known is 00:08:27.57\00:08:28.90 because of his music bands that he used to have. 00:08:28.94\00:08:32.17 In fact some of old senior workers still remember 00:08:32.21\00:08:36.01 the days when he used to lead out the band 00:08:36.04\00:08:38.11 and there were members in his band 00:08:38.15\00:08:39.81 used to play the drum, used to play the trumpet. 00:08:39.85\00:08:42.48 They still remember the days. Oh, how wonderful. 00:08:42.52\00:08:44.19 Yeah. 00:08:44.22\00:08:45.55 And so the church is actually celebrating 100 years 00:08:45.59\00:08:48.12 since he first came to this country. 00:08:48.16\00:08:50.53 Well, yes in a certain way but not so widely. 00:08:50.56\00:08:54.16 Yeah, but it's an anniversary. Yes, an anniversary. 00:08:54.20\00:08:56.80 Now, I'm really interested in what you're talking 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.67 about the way that he came in had an incarnational ministry 00:08:58.70\00:09:02.67 where he didn't just keep himself separate, 00:09:02.70\00:09:05.61 he became one with the people to be in his ministry. 00:09:05.64\00:09:07.98 Right. Right, yeah. 00:09:08.01\00:09:09.58 Now Gavin, as we look at the church here today 00:09:09.61\00:09:13.08 what are the major challenges that you face? 00:09:13.11\00:09:16.79 Well, as I mentioned 85 percent of the population is Buddhist. 00:09:16.82\00:09:21.69 So in this hard to evangelize in Burma 00:09:21.72\00:09:25.79 because there is a lot of restrictions you know, 00:09:25.83\00:09:30.47 done by other religions. 00:09:30.50\00:09:32.93 And so we don't have open air meetings. 00:09:32.97\00:09:35.94 We can't conduct those open air meetings. 00:09:35.97\00:09:38.64 We can't do much outdoor activities. 00:09:38.67\00:09:42.61 Mostly the activities we do in the church today 00:09:42.64\00:09:45.21 is within the church only, we can't go out. 00:09:45.25\00:09:49.58 But of course we can print, 00:09:49.62\00:09:51.99 but even for printing we have through different sensors 00:09:52.02\00:09:56.22 that restrict the language in certain ways, 00:09:56.26\00:09:59.06 the usage of language in certain ways you see. 00:09:59.09\00:10:03.57 And now we have a school, 00:10:03.60\00:10:05.27 we have our own Seventh-day Adventist schools 00:10:05.30\00:10:07.04 but they are known as seminaries not as schools, 00:10:07.07\00:10:10.51 because we are not permitted, you see. 00:10:10.54\00:10:13.54 And of course apart from that work is not so bad. 00:10:13.58\00:10:16.51 We can move our around, yeah, we can do. 00:10:16.54\00:10:19.65 Now, I was very encouraged today to visit 00:10:19.68\00:10:22.15 a central influence within the city 00:10:22.18\00:10:24.62 and this facility was actually opened yesterday. 00:10:24.65\00:10:27.29 What are the goals of this ministry? 00:10:27.32\00:10:29.36 Well, the goals of this ministry 00:10:29.39\00:10:31.13 is for the community to be aware of the health 00:10:31.16\00:10:35.36 and to know that there is a God 00:10:35.40\00:10:38.77 that is interesting and wanting them to be healthy. 00:10:38.80\00:10:42.50 So because many people don't understand Christianity. 00:10:42.54\00:10:45.67 They think it's the western religion imported to Myanmar. 00:10:45.71\00:10:50.88 So we want them to know that there is a God 00:10:50.91\00:10:54.32 and He is interested in them. 00:10:54.35\00:10:56.25 And the best way is through the health message. 00:10:56.28\00:10:59.59 Right, so it's a practical way 00:10:59.62\00:11:01.89 of connecting with needs in the communities. 00:11:01.92\00:11:04.09 Very right. Yeah. 00:11:04.13\00:11:06.63 Now tell me a little bit about the schools. 00:11:06.66\00:11:08.90 Do you have any-- 00:11:08.93\00:11:10.27 how many schools do we have in this country? 00:11:10.30\00:11:12.73 We have five missions in Myanmar 00:11:12.77\00:11:16.40 and each mission has their own elementary school. 00:11:16.44\00:11:19.17 Okay. 00:11:19.21\00:11:20.54 Plus they have their primary schools 00:11:20.58\00:11:23.95 and middle schools. 00:11:23.98\00:11:25.85 We have one seminary in Yangon. 00:11:25.88\00:11:28.88 So the school's yes, are functioning well 00:11:28.92\00:11:31.89 and they are overcrowded I should say. 00:11:31.92\00:11:34.06 Yes. Very overcrowded. 00:11:34.09\00:11:35.92 Because there's a big demand to. 00:11:35.96\00:11:37.39 Big demand, yeah. 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.39 Well, thank you so much for talking to us today 00:11:39.43\00:11:42.76 and may God continue to bless your ministry here. 00:11:42.80\00:11:45.57 My pleasure, Gary. 00:11:45.60\00:11:47.10 And viewers at home, 00:11:47.14\00:11:48.47 please pray for the church here in Myanmar. 00:11:48.50\00:11:51.41 Pray for the young people, 00:11:51.44\00:11:52.84 the children and the many challenges 00:11:52.87\00:11:55.41 that are faced here. 00:11:55.44\00:11:57.05 This is not a rich church, their resources a very limited. 00:11:57.08\00:12:02.32 So please pray that God will continue to bless. 00:12:02.35\00:12:05.02 Pray for the center of influence, 00:12:05.05\00:12:06.55 pray for the schools that are reaching out. 00:12:06.59\00:12:08.92 And we'll be right back straight after this break. 00:12:08.96\00:12:11.56
