Empowering young people from mission 00:00:09.54\00:00:11.67 through the "Give Them the Keys" initiative 00:00:11.71\00:00:14.24 and educating young people in Timor-Leste and Bangladesh. 00:00:14.28\00:00:18.41 These stories and more coming up next. 00:00:18.45\00:00:20.95 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:25.62\00:00:28.06 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:28.09\00:00:31.13 He gave us a mission. 00:00:31.16\00:00:33.90 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:33.93\00:00:38.73 telling them of His love." 00:00:38.77\00:00:41.20 This is our mission. 00:00:41.24\00:00:43.27 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:43.30\00:00:45.27 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots 00:00:52.71\00:00:54.92 coming to you today from Ayutthaya, Thailand. 00:00:54.95\00:00:57.95 This is the site of the ancient capital 00:00:57.99\00:01:00.36 of the Siamese Kingdom. 00:01:00.39\00:01:02.06 It had its glory days for some 400 years. 00:01:02.09\00:01:05.23 Today we know it as Thailand. 00:01:05.26\00:01:07.36 Like all ancient civilizations, 00:01:07.40\00:01:09.83 like all governments, like all institutions 00:01:09.86\00:01:12.20 eventually they crumble into dust 00:01:12.23\00:01:14.50 but the word of Lord stands forever. 00:01:14.54\00:01:16.71 And so when we look at the challenges 00:01:16.74\00:01:18.81 facing the church today number one, 00:01:18.84\00:01:21.04 is to keep our focus on missions 00:01:21.08\00:01:23.01 so that's we do not become just a form, an institution. 00:01:23.04\00:01:27.12 On today's program we will be talking about 00:01:27.15\00:01:28.88 pass on the torch of mission to young people. 00:01:28.92\00:01:31.92 The first stop, let's travel to Timor-Leste 00:01:31.95\00:01:34.79 and meet the only Seventh-day Adventist pastor 00:01:34.82\00:01:37.19 in that country. 00:01:37.23\00:01:38.56 Timor-Leste is the newest nation 00:01:39.83\00:01:41.83 of the 21st century. 00:01:41.86\00:01:43.50 After many years of conflict 00:01:43.53\00:01:45.23 this nation now has independence. 00:01:45.27\00:01:47.94 Although a country with religious freedom 00:01:47.97\00:01:50.21 Timor-Leste is hesitant to accept new groups 00:01:50.24\00:01:53.11 that could potentially cause conflict 00:01:53.14\00:01:55.14 and a divide this nation once again. 00:01:55.18\00:01:57.45 Timor-Leste is 98% Catholic 00:01:58.55\00:02:01.35 therefore much of the country operates on Saturday 00:02:01.38\00:02:04.12 and shuts down on Sunday. 00:02:04.15\00:02:05.99 This makes it difficult for Adventist children 00:02:06.02\00:02:08.32 who cannot attend school on Saturday 00:02:08.36\00:02:10.39 in order to observe the biblical day of rest. 00:02:10.43\00:02:13.29 Every week Adventist students have a tough choice to make. 00:02:13.33\00:02:16.97 To miss lectures on Sabbath could mean embarrassment, 00:02:17.00\00:02:20.10 a beating and often being expelled from school. 00:02:20.14\00:02:23.47 Nathanya like many other young ones 00:02:23.51\00:02:26.07 attends a public school. 00:02:26.11\00:02:27.94 She studies hard and strives for the best grades. 00:02:27.98\00:02:31.58 She has no other option but to do her very best 00:02:31.61\00:02:34.75 because she spends one last day in school 00:02:34.78\00:02:37.42 then the rest of her class. 00:02:37.45\00:02:39.25 Nathanya has made a bold decision 00:02:39.29\00:02:42.12 to respect the Sabbath and attend church. 00:02:42.16\00:02:45.36 Nathanya's family taught her from a young age 00:02:45.39\00:02:47.90 to love Jesus and read the Bible. 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.57 From the Bible Nathanya and her sister Lavina 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.34 learned to do good and to love others. 00:02:53.37\00:02:56.17 They also learn to pray for the things 00:02:56.20\00:02:58.44 that concern the heart. 00:02:58.47\00:03:00.18 Today Lavina and Nathanya are praying about school. 00:03:00.21\00:03:03.81 They had explained to the teachers 00:03:03.85\00:03:05.38 why they cannot come to school on Saturdays 00:03:05.41\00:03:07.88 but it has been difficult for them. 00:03:07.92\00:03:10.09 This time again they have been threatened 00:03:10.12\00:03:12.15 to be expelled from school. 00:03:12.19\00:03:14.16 For them this is unthinkable. 00:03:14.19\00:03:16.76 They know they need an education 00:03:16.79\00:03:18.69 and they love going to school with the other kids. 00:03:18.73\00:03:21.40 After daily worship the girls leave for school. 00:03:21.43\00:03:24.80 As the school day goes on 00:03:24.83\00:03:26.43 it appears that the teacher forgot 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.27 they missed school this past Saturday. 00:03:28.30\00:03:30.61 The girls come home 00:03:30.64\00:03:31.97 thankful that one more time Jesus has helped them. 00:03:32.01\00:03:36.34 This family has been praying for more than 10 years 00:03:36.38\00:03:39.28 than an Adventist school could open here in Timor-Leste. 00:03:39.31\00:03:42.32 This school will accommodate Adventist students 00:03:42.35\00:03:44.69 as well as other faith groups 00:03:44.72\00:03:46.05 who cannot attend school on Saturday. 00:03:46.09\00:03:48.99 A new school would also be an opportunity 00:03:49.02\00:03:51.06 for children who do not have the privilege 00:03:51.09\00:03:52.89 of an education as schools here in Timor-Leste 00:03:52.93\00:03:56.03 are operating overcapacity. 00:03:56.06\00:03:58.10 Pastor Inaciu da Kosta is the only ordained 00:04:00.54\00:04:04.01 Timor-Leste Seventh-day Adventist pastor 00:04:04.04\00:04:05.97 in the entire country. 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.28 He has been working hard to start 00:04:08.31\00:04:09.94 a Seventh-day Adventist school in Timor-Leste. 00:04:09.98\00:04:12.91 He has time and again requested assistance 00:04:12.95\00:04:15.45 in funds for this project. 00:04:15.48\00:04:17.79 Fortunately this quarter 00:04:17.82\00:04:19.35 Adventist church members around the world 00:04:19.39\00:04:21.36 will join hands to help make it possible 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.73 for Timor-Leste to open the first 00:04:23.76\00:04:26.23 Seventh-day Adventist school in their country. 00:04:26.26\00:04:29.13 I'm in Bangkok Thailand with Greg and Amy Whitsett 00:04:36.10\00:04:39.41 from the Center for East Asian Religions 00:04:39.44\00:04:41.74 and also their son Tyler. 00:04:41.78\00:04:43.61 Thanks for joining us today. 00:04:43.65\00:04:44.98 Yeah. 00:04:45.01\00:04:46.35 Tyler, I'm gonna start with you this time. 00:04:46.38\00:04:47.72 Tell me what is the most challenging thing 00:04:48.52\00:04:52.75 about living in a totally different culture? 00:04:52.79\00:04:55.72 The most challenging thing for me is, 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.93 I that you have to learn how to act in society. 00:04:59.19\00:05:03.50 Hence when we came here I had to learn how to-- 00:05:03.53\00:05:09.40 learned a new way of social life. 00:05:09.44\00:05:11.87 How to hang out with my friends, 00:05:11.91\00:05:13.24 what cool what's not cool 00:05:13.27\00:05:14.68 hence also being away from family 00:05:15.14\00:05:18.01 that can also quite hard. 00:05:18.05\00:05:19.75 Yeah, now you've been in Thailand 00:05:19.78\00:05:21.92 for a few years now, where were you before that? 00:05:21.95\00:05:24.19 We were in Laos, in Laos. 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.15 Now there's a good chance that it might be many viewers 00:05:26.19\00:05:28.66 who couldn't even find that on a map, 00:05:28.69\00:05:30.59 tell me about Laos. 00:05:30.63\00:05:32.19 Laos is a very small country. 00:05:32.23\00:05:33.90 It's the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia. 00:05:33.93\00:05:38.77 Its to the East of Thailand and west of Vietnam. 00:05:38.80\00:05:45.97 Okay. 00:05:46.14\00:05:47.58 And you were pretty young when you moved there, right? 00:05:47.61\00:05:50.58 Yeah, I was, I was three-years-old 00:05:50.61\00:05:52.41 when we move there. 00:05:52.45\00:05:53.78 Amazing. 00:05:53.82\00:05:55.15 Now Tyler, just to be little bit personal here 00:05:55.18\00:05:56.72 I see a little bit of redness around your eye, 00:05:56.75\00:05:59.69 can you please describe to me what happened there? 00:05:59.72\00:06:01.69 Oh, that happened quite recently. 00:06:01.72\00:06:04.76 We were having a fireworks party for New Year 00:06:05.99\00:06:08.30 and basically we were lighting off 00:06:08.33\00:06:11.87 the grand finale of the biggest show 00:06:11.90\00:06:14.04 and it came up and hit me in the head 00:06:14.07\00:06:17.24 and I was in the hospital for few days. 00:06:17.27\00:06:19.27 So Amy, that must have been a fairly frightening time? 00:06:19.31\00:06:22.68 Yeah, for sure. 00:06:22.71\00:06:25.25 Very scary but at the same time you know knowing that 00:06:25.28\00:06:29.05 God had called us here 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.59 we knew that God was in it somewhere 00:06:30.62\00:06:32.59 and we just had a look for Him where was He in it. 00:06:32.62\00:06:35.19 And actually 00:06:35.22\00:06:36.56 Tyler strength had calm during that time. 00:06:36.59\00:06:38.29 You know, he wasn't all panicking and upset. 00:06:38.33\00:06:40.93 His first words were somebody pray for me. 00:06:40.96\00:06:44.00 Please pray for me. Is that right? 00:06:44.03\00:06:45.37 You know and just-- 00:06:45.40\00:06:47.70 I think that helped me 00:06:47.74\00:06:49.07 but just the assurance that God is in it somewhere 00:06:49.10\00:06:51.67 and just have to look for Him. 00:06:51.71\00:06:53.04 Yeah. Yeah. 00:06:53.07\00:06:54.41 So Amy, how many years now 00:06:54.44\00:06:55.88 have you as a family been living in Southeast Asian? 00:06:55.91\00:06:58.88 Almost 13. Thirteen. 00:06:58.91\00:07:01.15 So most of your ministry has been overseas? 00:07:01.18\00:07:04.09 Yes. 00:07:04.12\00:07:05.45 Tell me what is the, what is the most challenging 00:07:05.49\00:07:08.39 thing about mission service for you? 00:07:08.42\00:07:10.26 What's the most difficult thing? 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.36 I think my answer would have been 00:07:12.39\00:07:13.73 different 10 years ago. 00:07:13.76\00:07:15.10 It would have been something related to food 00:07:15.13\00:07:16.46 or language or something. 00:07:16.50\00:07:17.83 But now I think really the hardest thing for me 00:07:17.87\00:07:20.27 is just the distance from family. 00:07:20.30\00:07:22.00 You know, distance from my parents 00:07:22.04\00:07:23.77 and nieces and nephews and having the-- 00:07:23.81\00:07:27.61 you know, the influence of grandparents on 00:07:27.64\00:07:29.68 how to raise kids 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.38 and suggestions on how to raise teenaged boys 00:07:31.41\00:07:34.72 and, yeah, I think just distance from family 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.29 is the hardest. 00:07:37.32\00:07:38.69 And what's the most rewarding thing? 00:07:38.72\00:07:40.89 Most rewarding thing is just seeing people light up 00:07:40.92\00:07:44.69 when they really experience God, 00:07:44.73\00:07:47.06 when they've had God touch them 00:07:47.10\00:07:49.96 in a personal way in their life 00:07:50.00\00:07:51.33 in the way it transforms their life 00:07:51.37\00:07:52.70 is just unbelievable, unexplainable. 00:07:52.73\00:07:57.34 Definitely worth it. Wonderful. 00:07:57.37\00:07:59.41 And so if somebody was watching this program 00:07:59.44\00:08:02.44 in thinking perhaps, that could be me, 00:08:02.48\00:08:04.85 I could be involved in mission service 00:08:04.88\00:08:06.61 what would your counsel be? 00:08:06.65\00:08:08.35 We need you. Okay. 00:08:08.38\00:08:09.88 We need you, God needs you. 00:08:09.92\00:08:11.32 If you're feeling-- we actually had a pastor 00:08:11.35\00:08:14.66 counselors we talked him about it and he said 00:08:14.69\00:08:16.93 if you're feeling the call, how many people feel the call? 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.79 If you're feeling the call it's got to be from God, 00:08:19.83\00:08:22.20 follow it. 00:08:22.23\00:08:23.57 So if you're feeling the call come. 00:08:23.60\00:08:25.43 Wonderful. Pray about it and come. 00:08:25.47\00:08:26.80 Good. 00:08:26.84\00:08:28.17 Greg, we're just finishing off some meetings here 00:08:28.20\00:08:30.31 for the Center for East Asian Religions, 00:08:30.34\00:08:32.21 what was the focus of the meetings? 00:08:32.24\00:08:34.94 The meetings were talking about mission issues 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.35 and sharing Christ for this 00:08:37.38\00:08:39.01 and how to do a better job of that 00:08:39.05\00:08:40.95 because traditionally we've not done a real good job. 00:08:40.98\00:08:44.19 Well, why is that? Why is that? 00:08:44.22\00:08:46.59 Well, its it's interesting-- 00:08:46.62\00:08:48.82 really its what I have talked to people about it 00:08:48.86\00:08:52.53 is this kind of golf and football. 00:08:52.56\00:08:55.03 In football or soccer as we call in America, 00:08:55.06\00:08:57.60 you know, there's two teams in the say controversy 00:08:57.63\00:08:59.43 but with golf it's kind of on your own 00:08:59.47\00:09:01.07 and you have different things. 00:09:01.10\00:09:02.44 And so we can talk about both playing with balls 00:09:02.47\00:09:05.37 and playing out on the grass and enjoying the sunlight 00:09:05.41\00:09:07.84 but actually the rules 00:09:07.88\00:09:09.21 are that both games very different. 00:09:09.24\00:09:10.68 And when a Buddhist hears about Christianity 00:09:10.71\00:09:14.55 they hear some things that sound familiar 00:09:14.58\00:09:16.18 but so much of it is just very foreign idea. 00:09:16.22\00:09:18.02 Yeah. 00:09:18.05\00:09:19.39 And doesn't sound very attractive. 00:09:19.42\00:09:20.76 They don't know how to apply that on a golf course 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.02 which is what their life is like. 00:09:23.06\00:09:24.56 So that's getting to the essence 00:09:24.59\00:09:25.93 of the purposes your center, right? 00:09:25.96\00:09:27.60 Right. 00:09:27.63\00:09:28.96 Yeah, now at our center the whole focus is just 00:09:29.00\00:09:31.67 to network with the church around 00:09:31.70\00:09:33.40 and come along side, ask what's working 00:09:33.44\00:09:35.27 and kind of guide them 00:09:35.30\00:09:36.64 and thinking about the questions 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.01 they should think through and how to be more effective 00:09:38.04\00:09:39.84 in sharing Christ with people. 00:09:39.87\00:09:41.84 What are some of the or one or two of the major mistakes 00:09:41.88\00:09:45.61 that we make when we try to communicate 00:09:45.65\00:09:47.68 with people from a different culture 00:09:47.72\00:09:49.58 or religious background? 00:09:49.62\00:09:51.32 Well, we assume that 00:09:51.35\00:09:53.15 because we can, you know, speak their language 00:09:53.19\00:09:56.02 or translate into their language 00:09:56.06\00:09:57.39 with different things 00:09:57.43\00:09:58.76 that we have something that we must share with them. 00:09:58.79\00:10:00.70 And in actuality we have two eyes, a nose, 00:10:00.73\00:10:04.43 and two years which have a lot of sensory input 00:10:04.47\00:10:06.40 to learn and we need to come first 00:10:06.43\00:10:07.94 with the learners attitude 00:10:07.97\00:10:09.30 to understand what are the needs 00:10:09.34\00:10:10.67 and what are the perceptions of the people 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.37 and then how do I show Christ to meet them 00:10:12.41\00:10:14.38 on the same ground. 00:10:14.41\00:10:15.74 Right. Yeah. 00:10:15.78\00:10:17.11 So often we come with our own package 00:10:17.15\00:10:18.48 of what we think 00:10:18.51\00:10:19.85 they need rather than listening first 00:10:19.88\00:10:21.22 is what you are telling me? 00:10:21.25\00:10:22.58 Yeah, exactly. 00:10:22.62\00:10:23.95 We preconceive notions that because its truth. 00:10:23.99\00:10:25.42 Therefore it must be relevant to them. 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.42 And but really present truth, relevant truth 00:10:27.46\00:10:29.96 is everything we know to be as Adventist 00:10:29.99\00:10:31.89 but also we need to make sure that 00:10:31.93\00:10:33.36 its actually touching a spot that they also understand 00:10:33.40\00:10:38.03 is a need that they have to fill. 00:10:38.07\00:10:39.50 Right. Yeah. 00:10:39.53\00:10:40.87 So Greg, for people 00:10:40.90\00:10:42.24 who want to find out more information about 00:10:42.27\00:10:43.61 the center where do they find that? 00:10:43.64\00:10:45.27 Well, a great place to look is 00:10:45.31\00:10:46.74 at the adventistmisson.org website. 00:10:46.78\00:10:48.71 Well, said. 00:10:48.74\00:10:50.71 And of course just add the prefix, 00:10:50.75\00:10:52.65 instead of the www just add CEAR for the Center 00:10:52.68\00:10:56.18 for East Asian Religions. 00:10:56.22\00:10:57.55 So CEAR.Adventistmission.org. 00:10:57.59\00:10:59.99 Wonderful. Yeah. 00:11:00.02\00:11:01.36 Well, thank you Amy and Tyler and Greg, 00:11:01.39\00:11:03.22 for sharing with us today. 00:11:03.26\00:11:04.59 All right, thank you. 00:11:04.63\00:11:05.96 And please remember the Center for East Asian Religions 00:11:05.99\00:11:08.83 and the tremendous challenge that they face 00:11:08.86\00:11:11.67 and pray for missionaries all over the world. 00:11:11.70\00:11:14.30 Sometimes frontline mission 00:11:14.34\00:11:15.77 can be exciting and rewarding, 00:11:15.80\00:11:17.81 other times it can be discouraging 00:11:17.84\00:11:19.41 and it's very encouraging for them to know that 00:11:19.44\00:11:22.51 there is people praying for them. 00:11:22.54\00:11:24.11 We will be right back after this break. 00:11:24.15\00:11:25.61
