Welcome back to Mexico City. 00:00:08.14\00:00:10.04 Next up, we travel to Malawi 00:00:10.07\00:00:12.54 where a Seventh-day Adventist missionary doctor 00:00:12.57\00:00:15.48 is working in an urban environment 00:00:15.51\00:00:17.71 as the only cardiologist in the entire country. 00:00:17.75\00:00:21.18 Dr. Tiffany Priester and her husband 00:00:21.22\00:00:23.59 recently caught up with Rick Kajuira 00:00:23.62\00:00:25.99 at the Adventist World Headquarters. 00:00:26.02\00:00:28.42 Thank you, Gary. 00:00:28.46\00:00:29.82 Our guests today are Dr. Tiffany Priester and Darryl 00:00:29.86\00:00:32.29 who come to us 00:00:32.33\00:00:33.66 all the way from the country of Malawi 00:00:33.70\00:00:35.26 in Southern Africa. 00:00:35.30\00:00:37.27 Thank you for joining us today. 00:00:37.30\00:00:38.83 It's our pleasure. 00:00:38.87\00:00:40.77 Now, where are you from originally? 00:00:40.80\00:00:43.91 I grow up in the Southern California region 00:00:43.94\00:00:45.64 near Loma Linda. 00:00:45.67\00:00:47.01 Okay, near Loma Linda where you also studied. 00:00:47.04\00:00:49.14 Yes. Okay. 00:00:49.18\00:00:50.65 Now how did you end up 00:00:50.68\00:00:52.41 as a medical missionary in Malawi? 00:00:52.45\00:00:55.45 Was it always your dream to be a medical missionary 00:00:55.48\00:00:57.69 or was it something that just hit 00:00:57.72\00:01:00.02 when you're in medical school like? 00:01:00.06\00:01:02.79 As far as I can remember it was one of my dreams. 00:01:02.82\00:01:05.13 I actually grow up 00:01:05.16\00:01:06.49 listening to a radio station called KSGN 00:01:06.53\00:01:08.86 and they featured mission stories 00:01:08.90\00:01:10.43 and Loma Linda often had missionaries, 00:01:10.47\00:01:12.80 especially medical missionaries returning. 00:01:12.83\00:01:15.14 And those stories inspired me 00:01:15.17\00:01:16.60 and I said, you know, 00:01:16.64\00:01:17.97 I want to be a medical missionary. 00:01:18.01\00:01:19.51 I'm sure somewhere along the line, 00:01:19.54\00:01:20.98 I changed my mind several times, 00:01:21.01\00:01:22.38 and by the time I was in Walla Walla College, 00:01:22.41\00:01:25.95 I knew I was a premed major, 00:01:25.98\00:01:27.32 I was going to be in medicine 00:01:27.35\00:01:28.68 and I was probably going to 00:01:28.72\00:01:30.05 try to be an Africa medical missionary. 00:01:30.09\00:01:32.02 And as my freshman year of medical school, 00:01:32.05\00:01:34.46 I signed up for the Deferred Mission Appointee 00:01:34.49\00:01:36.16 or DMA program 00:01:36.19\00:01:37.69 and this is where I've ended up. 00:01:37.73\00:01:39.06 Okay. 00:01:39.09\00:01:40.70 And, Darryl, when you met Tiffany, 00:01:40.73\00:01:43.00 did you know that she had this dream 00:01:43.03\00:01:44.43 of being a medical missionary someday or? 00:01:44.47\00:01:47.10 I didn't. 00:01:47.14\00:01:48.80 I haven't been going on mission trips 00:01:48.84\00:01:52.01 for many years myself. 00:01:52.04\00:01:53.61 And when I was in youth ministry, 00:01:53.64\00:01:55.98 I took kids on mission trips 00:01:56.01\00:01:57.35 and the idea that we might take a longer term trip, 00:01:57.38\00:01:59.81 sounded great to me. 00:01:59.85\00:02:01.18 Okay. 00:02:01.22\00:02:02.55 Out of curiosity, where did you go on 00:02:02.58\00:02:03.92 with your kids on mission trips? 00:02:03.95\00:02:05.29 Mostly Mexico. 00:02:05.32\00:02:06.65 Okay. Right. 00:02:06.69\00:02:08.72 Now, listen to the mission stories 00:02:08.76\00:02:11.49 well being medical missionary and being in medical missionary 00:02:11.53\00:02:15.03 may or may not be the same thing. 00:02:15.06\00:02:16.70 Were your expectations fulfilled 00:02:16.73\00:02:18.73 when you reached Malawi or what was that like? 00:02:18.77\00:02:22.07 I learned by traveling over the years 00:02:22.10\00:02:23.81 that I shouldn't have very many expectations 00:02:23.84\00:02:25.97 but even so, even with the few expectations 00:02:26.01\00:02:28.44 I had, it's always quite different. 00:02:28.48\00:02:30.71 The hospital I work out is in the city 00:02:30.75\00:02:33.85 and it's much different from the rural stories 00:02:33.88\00:02:36.02 that people used to present as missionaries, 00:02:36.05\00:02:38.42 so I actually work a lot with the middle and upper class 00:02:38.45\00:02:42.12 and some with the poor and people, 00:02:42.16\00:02:44.49 and I have a lot more, I can use. 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.96 We have antibiotics, we have ventilators, 00:02:47.00\00:02:48.76 we have an intensive care unit 00:02:48.80\00:02:50.13 and I have stress testing equipment 00:02:50.17\00:02:51.50 and cardiology equipment that I can use 00:02:51.53\00:02:53.47 and so it is quite a bit different, 00:02:53.50\00:02:54.94 but I would say at least in a good way. 00:02:54.97\00:02:57.77 And the Adventist church 00:02:57.81\00:02:59.14 has rural hospitals and city hospitals 00:02:59.17\00:03:01.08 and you happened to end up in the city one 00:03:01.11\00:03:02.68 but in some ways you have a large population 00:03:02.71\00:03:06.35 that you can make a difference in their lives 00:03:06.38\00:03:08.88 when you're in a city. 00:03:08.92\00:03:10.25 Do, and as the only cardiologist in the country, 00:03:10.29\00:03:12.52 people come from the city, 00:03:12.55\00:03:13.89 from the rural areas 00:03:13.92\00:03:15.26 and from everywhere else as well. 00:03:15.29\00:03:16.62 Okay. 00:03:16.66\00:03:17.99 So you're the only cardiologist in all of Malawi. 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.36 Yes. Okay. 00:03:19.39\00:03:20.73 And what about the surrounding countries? 00:03:20.76\00:03:24.03 Yeah. 00:03:24.07\00:03:25.40 There's also no access to cardiology care 00:03:25.43\00:03:26.97 for several of the surrounding countries 00:03:27.00\00:03:30.47 for quite somewhat, some distance, 00:03:30.51\00:03:31.84 so there is 00:03:31.87\00:03:33.21 Maputo Heart Institute far to the south, 00:03:33.24\00:03:34.58 so the country surrounding is Mozambique 00:03:34.61\00:03:36.71 and we get people that come in and as far away as Harare 00:03:36.75\00:03:39.98 where there also is a cardiologist 00:03:40.02\00:03:41.35 but if someone needs a second opinion, 00:03:41.38\00:03:42.78 they will drive over to see me. 00:03:42.82\00:03:44.85 Okay. 00:03:44.89\00:03:46.22 Now, when you look at 00:03:46.25\00:03:47.69 the challenges of city mission hospitals, 00:03:47.72\00:03:52.19 what are some of the major issues 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.30 that people face there? 00:03:54.33\00:03:56.67 As people move to the cities, 00:03:56.70\00:03:58.63 they developed the diseases of lifestyle 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.87 so some of what I treat 00:04:00.90\00:04:02.54 is actually similar to what we'd see here, 00:04:02.57\00:04:04.61 obesity, high blood pressure, 00:04:04.64\00:04:06.88 high cholesterol, starting to have heart attacks, 00:04:06.91\00:04:09.48 so those things need to be addressed. 00:04:09.51\00:04:10.85 The message about healthful living 00:04:10.88\00:04:12.21 about walking instead of driving a car, 00:04:12.25\00:04:14.12 it's very difficult to get across to people 00:04:14.15\00:04:15.95 who will finally have a car, 00:04:15.98\00:04:17.75 finally don't have to walk 10 miles to get water. 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.56 And to understand the health effects, 00:04:20.59\00:04:22.36 it's sometimes quite awkward to emphasize that to people. 00:04:22.39\00:04:26.23 we also have to balance our care 00:04:26.26\00:04:28.70 in our outreach clinics to the poor 00:04:28.73\00:04:30.53 with our outreach to there to the upper and middle class 00:04:30.57\00:04:32.73 especially the business class, so I do also an outreach clinic 00:04:32.77\00:04:36.00 which is an hour and half drive each way 00:04:36.04\00:04:37.74 once a week down to a rural hospital in Malamulo 00:04:37.77\00:04:40.31 as well as to the government hospital in town. 00:04:40.34\00:04:43.65 So along with the benefits of city living 00:04:43.68\00:04:46.68 come some of the negatives of health issues, 00:04:46.72\00:04:49.92 and cities are becoming one of the big mission areas, 00:04:49.95\00:04:52.72 you know, that's where people are. 00:04:52.75\00:04:55.22 In recent years 00:04:55.26\00:04:56.66 the global population has shifted from 00:04:56.69\00:04:58.26 being rural to urban. 00:04:58.29\00:05:01.50 Excuse me. 00:05:01.53\00:05:03.40 So when you're working in a mission hospital like that 00:05:03.43\00:05:07.90 and if you have somebody who said, you know, 00:05:07.94\00:05:09.67 hey, I'm interested in going out 00:05:09.70\00:05:11.94 in mission service of some kind, 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.18 what advice would you give them? 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.28 I'd say to people who are getting ready to go out 00:05:16.31\00:05:18.88 that they should learn about the area that they're going to. 00:05:18.91\00:05:21.58 You know, if they're going to rural hospital, 00:05:21.62\00:05:23.18 it's going to be very different than a city hospital. 00:05:23.22\00:05:25.29 I'd say that they ought to be 00:05:25.32\00:05:27.22 very aware of the health risks themselves. 00:05:27.26\00:05:29.79 Some places have malaria, 00:05:29.82\00:05:31.16 some places have the other fevers, 00:05:31.19\00:05:32.53 so people who are getting ready to go out 00:05:32.56\00:05:34.16 and then to try to have fewer expectations, 00:05:34.20\00:05:36.53 I think the fewer expectations you have, 00:05:36.56\00:05:38.33 the less you can be disappointed. 00:05:38.37\00:05:40.07 And, you know, every single mission field is different, 00:05:40.10\00:05:43.64 and the things that are needed there are different, 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.57 the health messages might be different 00:05:45.61\00:05:47.01 that are needed there. 00:05:47.04\00:05:48.38 I can remember someone talking about 00:05:48.41\00:05:49.81 not wearing constrictive clothing 00:05:49.84\00:05:51.35 to a group of people 00:05:51.38\00:05:52.71 who had only one set of clothes. 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.75 So the health message actually is going to vary, 00:05:54.78\00:05:57.42 so I'd say my best advice would be 00:05:57.45\00:05:59.39 for people to understand 00:05:59.42\00:06:00.82 where they're headed for what the needs are. 00:06:00.86\00:06:04.06 Darryl, what were some of the major adjustments 00:06:04.09\00:06:05.99 you had to make when you moved into Malawi? 00:06:06.03\00:06:09.53 Well, I have to drive on the right side of the road 00:06:09.56\00:06:12.67 and remember to do that every time, 00:06:12.70\00:06:15.17 and really there the pace of life 00:06:15.20\00:06:19.61 is quite a bit different. 00:06:19.64\00:06:20.98 And Malawi is changing and the population is growing 00:06:21.01\00:06:25.28 and you find more people in the roads, 00:06:25.31\00:06:28.55 in cars, on bicycles, on foot 00:06:28.58\00:06:31.02 and it's just a different way of driving 00:06:31.05\00:06:33.66 level of attention that's required 00:06:33.69\00:06:36.19 is really quite a bit different, 00:06:36.22\00:06:37.56 and as Malawi changes, 00:06:37.59\00:06:39.19 you know, the missionary needs change as well. 00:06:39.23\00:06:41.76 The church is growing. The needs change there. 00:06:41.80\00:06:45.07 And what is true for us today 00:06:45.10\00:06:48.00 won't be true for missionaries 10 years from now. 00:06:48.04\00:06:50.81 Sure. 00:06:50.84\00:06:52.17 Our time is almost up 00:06:52.21\00:06:53.54 but if somebody wants to really do something 00:06:53.58\00:06:58.78 to make a difference in mission, 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.45 what would you tell them is key? 00:07:00.48\00:07:03.35 Well, I think there are probably 00:07:03.39\00:07:04.72 three things that we need. 00:07:04.75\00:07:06.09 We need people to pray for us to support God's work. 00:07:06.12\00:07:08.69 We need professionals that can help us, 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.69 you know, maybe an architect, 00:07:10.73\00:07:12.06 a nurse, a respiratory therapist, 00:07:12.09\00:07:14.10 you know, an administrator, an accountant 00:07:14.13\00:07:15.66 those kind of things 00:07:15.70\00:07:17.03 and then of course financially donations 00:07:17.07\00:07:18.73 are always useful for capital projects. 00:07:18.77\00:07:21.07 But how can they help financially? 00:07:21.10\00:07:23.17 Donations can be made to us through 00:07:23.20\00:07:24.77 adventist healthinternational.org/malawi. 00:07:24.81\00:07:28.61 Wonderful. 00:07:28.64\00:07:29.98 Thank you very much for joining us today 00:07:30.01\00:07:32.58 and back to you, Gary. 00:07:32.61\00:07:34.45 We met some student missionaries 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.82 who have volunteered at least a year of their lives 00:07:37.85\00:07:40.69 in service for others. 00:07:40.72\00:07:42.99 Their work has made a difference 00:07:43.02\00:07:45.59 in the lives of so many kids. 00:07:45.63\00:07:47.56 Let's hear some testimonies from some of the students, 00:07:47.60\00:07:50.60 a former student missionaries. 00:07:50.63\00:07:52.47 From around the globe, 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.17 Seventh-day Adventist University students 00:07:57.21\00:07:59.17 take a year off from school to travel abroad, 00:07:59.21\00:08:02.01 to beautiful parts of the world 00:08:02.04\00:08:03.71 where they teach island kids to read and write, 00:08:03.75\00:08:07.08 but most importantly to love. 00:08:07.12\00:08:09.85 The impact these volunteer student missionaries 00:08:09.88\00:08:12.42 have on the young kids surpasses understanding. 00:08:12.45\00:08:15.79 Here are the testimonies of students, 00:08:15.82\00:08:17.89 our former student missionaries 00:08:17.93\00:08:19.43 who are now attending Walla Walla University. 00:08:19.46\00:08:24.53 They had a lot to do 00:08:24.57\00:08:25.90 with guidance from their counselors need. 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.87 All of the student missionaries 00:08:27.90\00:08:29.40 impacted my life in a really, really, really big way. 00:08:29.44\00:08:32.87 You just make a lot of friends. 00:08:32.91\00:08:34.24 A lot of friends for a life, 00:08:34.28\00:08:35.61 you know, I'm so in touch with my first grade teacher. 00:08:35.64\00:08:37.58 Most people who I've talked to, 00:08:37.61\00:08:39.31 they think, oh, I'm gong to be a student missionary. 00:08:39.35\00:08:41.25 I'm just going to go teach a kid English 00:08:41.28\00:08:43.15 but it's a lot more than that. 00:08:43.18\00:08:45.19 A student missionary was the one 00:08:45.22\00:08:46.65 who taught me to tie my shoe. 00:08:46.69\00:08:48.02 I had two or three teachers in high school, 00:08:48.06\00:08:50.46 my senior year from Wall Walla 00:08:50.49\00:08:52.59 and they all helped me apply for Walla Walla. 00:08:52.63\00:08:55.96 If it wasn't for them, 00:08:56.00\00:08:57.33 I don't think that I would be here. 00:08:57.37\00:08:58.90 It affected me in a really positive way. 00:08:58.93\00:09:01.60 When I was in the high school, 00:09:01.64\00:09:02.97 I wasn't the best kid around the block, 00:09:03.00\00:09:04.84 but I did try hard in school throughout like my church 00:09:04.87\00:09:08.64 I got scholarships 00:09:08.68\00:09:10.21 that gave me the opportunity to be the person 00:09:10.25\00:09:12.65 that I'm today. 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.35 I was counting today 00:09:14.38\00:09:15.88 and 17 out of like my 25 teachers 00:09:15.92\00:09:19.82 were from Walla Walla. 00:09:19.85\00:09:21.32 I've been taught by a total of 31 student missionaries 00:09:21.36\00:09:25.03 and about 50% of them 00:09:25.06\00:09:27.26 were from Walla Walla University. 00:09:27.30\00:09:28.70 The school probably wouldn't function 00:09:28.73\00:09:30.20 if we didn't have their sermons and the ovens. 00:09:30.23\00:09:33.40 If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have a school. 00:09:33.44\00:09:35.60 Back home I was taught by SMs my whole life. 00:09:35.64\00:09:38.97 The teachers 00:09:39.01\00:09:40.34 that came and taught me my science classes 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.68 were also science majors here at Walla Walla. 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.88 And you could tell that their teaching style 00:09:44.91\00:09:46.58 was adapted from professors here. 00:09:46.61\00:09:48.68 I was aiming towards architecture 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.19 but then an SM who is from here. 00:09:50.22\00:09:52.75 He is a civil engineering student 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.72 and he kind of influenced me 00:09:54.76\00:09:56.39 to go the civil engineering direction 00:09:56.42\00:09:58.26 and I'm glad I chose that. 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.46 They taught me my subjects of course, 00:10:00.50\00:10:03.10 but then they also taught me life for instance, 00:10:03.13\00:10:05.27 they inspired me to come here. 00:10:05.30\00:10:06.97 They had a huge impact on our lives 00:10:07.00\00:10:09.50 there, all little kids running around campus. 00:10:09.54\00:10:12.04 I learned a lot about God from them too. 00:10:12.07\00:10:14.64 By taking the year off from school, 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.34 to come and like devote yourself 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.98 to serving like wow 00:10:19.01\00:10:21.18 that just, that just touches me. 00:10:21.22\00:10:23.32 They're not just their teachers 00:10:23.35\00:10:24.69 but they're also like their friends, 00:10:24.72\00:10:26.05 their siblings or they would even be parent 00:10:26.09\00:10:27.92 for some who don't even have parents. 00:10:27.96\00:10:30.63 Some of them, I got really closed to. 00:10:30.66\00:10:34.10 They're just like brothers and sisters to me. 00:10:34.13\00:10:36.36 One day I hope to be a student missionary too. 00:10:36.40\00:10:39.30 The list of opportunities changes every year. 00:10:39.33\00:10:41.84 You can volunteer 00:11:15.80\00:11:18.37 sharing the light of God's love, 00:11:18.41\00:11:21.01 from the mighty metropolis of Mexico City to Micronesia, 00:11:21.04\00:11:25.38 to the vast continent of Africa, 00:11:25.41\00:11:27.42 there are still many mission challenges. 00:11:27.45\00:11:30.15 And thank you for your continuing involvement 00:11:30.19\00:11:32.82 in mission and your prayers and your
