Athens, the capital of Greece, 00:00:10.24\00:00:12.31 one of the world's most ancient cities, 00:00:12.34\00:00:14.88 the birthplace of western civilization 00:00:14.91\00:00:17.51 and democracy, 00:00:17.55\00:00:18.88 that and much more coming up next. 00:00:18.91\00:00:21.08 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:25.65\00:00:28.26 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:28.29\00:00:31.16 He gave us a mission. 00:00:31.19\00:00:33.80 Jesus said, Go, 00:00:33.83\00:00:36.40 "go unto all the world telling them of His love." 00:00:36.43\00:00:41.30 This is our mission. 00:00:41.34\00:00:43.30 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:43.34\00:00:45.41 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:52.25\00:00:54.62 Coming to you today 00:00:54.65\00:00:55.98 from the ancient city of Athens in Greece. 00:00:56.02\00:00:59.15 The Apostle Paul walked 00:00:59.19\00:01:00.52 these streets some 2,000 years ago. 00:01:00.56\00:01:03.46 And Acts 17 it tells us the story of how 00:01:03.49\00:01:06.80 when he was in the marketplace, 00:01:06.83\00:01:08.16 he talked about Jesus, 00:01:08.20\00:01:09.90 and how he went to the Jewish synagogue 00:01:09.93\00:01:12.03 and talked about Jesus. 00:01:12.07\00:01:13.74 And then he was invited up here to Mars Hill 00:01:13.77\00:01:16.27 to meet with the Areopagus next to the Acropolis. 00:01:16.30\00:01:19.37 And there he reasoned with the philosophers 00:01:19.41\00:01:22.51 they were interested to hear new ideas 00:01:22.54\00:01:24.51 and he talked to them about the resurrection 00:01:24.55\00:01:26.51 and about Jesus, but before that 00:01:26.55\00:01:28.92 he made sure that he connected with their culture 00:01:28.95\00:01:31.79 and their understanding. 00:01:31.82\00:01:33.52 And so he talked about the altar to the unknown God 00:01:33.56\00:01:36.86 that he had seen 00:01:36.89\00:01:38.23 and he connected that to the one true God. 00:01:38.26\00:01:40.60 And he even quoted pagan poets to them, 00:01:40.63\00:01:44.10 "In him we live, and move, and have our being, 00:01:44.13\00:01:47.64 and also we are His offspring." 00:01:47.67\00:01:50.57 He took those pagan poems 00:01:50.61\00:01:52.21 and related them to the one true God. 00:01:52.24\00:01:55.38 As we look at the mission field 00:01:55.41\00:01:57.25 we face today around the world in so many places, 00:01:57.28\00:02:00.52 so many cultures, we need to follow the principles 00:02:00.55\00:02:03.89 that were shown by the Apostle Paul 00:02:03.92\00:02:06.45 of making the good news about Jesus attractive, 00:02:06.49\00:02:09.49 meaningful, and understandable to people in their context. 00:02:09.52\00:02:13.86 Well, more about that on today's program, 00:02:13.90\00:02:15.90 but first up let's travel to East Timor. 00:02:15.93\00:02:19.30 The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is a country 00:02:28.78\00:02:31.95 located in Southeast Asia. 00:02:31.98\00:02:33.98 It lies on the eastern half of the Island of Timor. 00:02:34.02\00:02:36.95 This small yet beautiful island is home to 1.2 million people 00:02:36.99\00:02:41.19 who make up one of two 00:02:41.22\00:02:42.76 predominantly Christian nations in Southeast Asia. 00:02:42.79\00:02:45.73 Statistically 98% of Timorese people are Catholic. 00:02:45.76\00:02:50.40 East Timor's official languages are Portuguese and Tetum, 00:02:50.43\00:02:54.30 which help explain the history of this country. 00:02:54.34\00:02:57.37 After 450 years of Portuguese colonization, 00:02:57.41\00:03:00.78 East Timor was almost 00:03:00.81\00:03:02.14 instantly brought under its neighbor Indonesia. 00:03:02.18\00:03:05.21 It was only recently in 2002 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.52 that East Timor became independent, 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.82 the first new democracy of the 21st century. 00:03:09.85\00:03:13.39 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:03:13.42\00:03:14.79 was first organized in this new country in 2009. 00:03:14.82\00:03:18.49 Currently, there is one official church, 00:03:18.53\00:03:21.26 three companies and some 500 members 00:03:21.30\00:03:23.67 spread throughout the island. 00:03:23.70\00:03:25.30 Today it's Sabbath here in Timor-Leste 00:03:27.57\00:03:30.27 and we're inside the only Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:03:30.31\00:03:33.07 on this remote island. 00:03:33.11\00:03:34.78 The people here are happy 00:03:34.81\00:03:36.34 and they have a place to worship 00:03:36.38\00:03:37.75 the God who made them. 00:03:37.78\00:03:39.55 They sing. 00:03:39.58\00:03:40.92 They study. 00:03:49.72\00:03:51.83 They hear the word of God. 00:03:51.86\00:03:53.80 They raise their voice as high in gratitude 00:03:53.83\00:03:56.06 for God's grace and protection. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.97 Adventist members in Timor-Leste 00:04:04.01\00:04:05.67 face regular difficulties when they join the church 00:04:05.71\00:04:08.41 and start following the biblical Sabbath. 00:04:08.44\00:04:11.05 Members are often rejected, 00:04:11.08\00:04:12.95 persecuted, threatened, expelled or fired 00:04:12.98\00:04:16.72 and at times physically attacked. 00:04:16.75\00:04:19.75 This is Lospalos, a remote town 00:04:43.88\00:04:46.31 on the eastern shore of Timor-Leste. 00:04:46.35\00:04:48.82 We came here to visit an Adventist member 00:04:53.82\00:04:55.92 who took a brave stand for God. 00:04:55.96\00:04:58.46 Jorkina is a Seventh-day Adventist member 00:04:58.49\00:05:01.00 who lives in Lospalos. 00:05:01.03\00:05:02.96 Her home is humble. 00:05:03.00\00:05:04.60 It is also her shop and workplace. 00:05:04.63\00:05:07.04 Jorkina is a tailor. 00:05:07.07\00:05:09.07 She sews clothes, purses and many creative items 00:05:09.10\00:05:12.14 to earn a living. 00:05:12.17\00:05:13.94 Jorkina has a physical condition 00:05:13.98\00:05:15.64 that causes her a lot of pain and challenges. 00:05:15.68\00:05:19.35 One day she felt so weak 00:05:19.38\00:05:20.72 that she prayed for God to help her. 00:05:20.75\00:05:23.08 It was then that two Adventist missionaries 00:05:23.12\00:05:25.42 came to her house, prayed with her 00:05:25.45\00:05:28.02 and gave her a Bible. 00:05:28.06\00:05:29.76 As Jorkina learned the Bible, 00:05:29.79\00:05:31.46 she decided to become a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:05:31.49\00:05:34.70 Unfortunately there is religious discrimination 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.37 in this area. 00:05:37.40\00:05:38.80 Soon Jorkina's neighbors 00:05:38.83\00:05:40.54 filed an unjust complaint against her 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.67 and she was taken by the police. 00:05:42.70\00:05:45.01 It was a difficult time for Jorkina. 00:05:45.04\00:05:47.81 But after this incident 00:05:47.84\00:05:49.18 she became even more encouraged to abide 00:05:49.21\00:05:51.88 by her Bible based faith. 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.28 She made the decision to be baptized 00:05:54.32\00:05:56.15 and join the small local Seventh-day Adventist group. 00:05:56.18\00:06:00.16 Her persecution is still evident at times, 00:06:00.19\00:06:03.06 but Jorkina finds the opportunity to speak 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.69 about God every chance she gets. 00:06:05.73\00:06:09.16 On Saturdays she closes her shop 00:06:09.20\00:06:11.87 and people have to wait until after Sabbath for her services. 00:06:11.90\00:06:15.87 This small community in Lospalos 00:06:15.90\00:06:17.81 is working hard to plant a new church. 00:06:17.84\00:06:20.98 There are also other groups in Timor-Leste 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.11 who ask for your prayer 00:06:23.14\00:06:24.51 and support for the many challenges 00:06:24.55\00:06:26.15 they face daily as they follow Jesus. 00:06:26.18\00:06:29.45 Please pray for the people here. 00:06:29.48\00:06:31.72 Pray also for the global mission pioneers 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.76 and missionaries working in this beautiful new nation. 00:06:33.79\00:06:37.63 My guest is Pastor Claudio Gulyas 00:06:47.80\00:06:50.14 who is the president 00:06:50.17\00:06:51.51 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:06:51.54\00:06:52.87 here in Greece. 00:06:52.91\00:06:54.24 Pastor, thank you so much for joining us. 00:06:54.28\00:06:56.64 Thank you for inviting me and give me this opportunity. 00:06:56.68\00:06:58.71 And at a very historic place. 00:06:58.75\00:07:01.02 Please tell our viewers where we're standing? 00:07:01.05\00:07:03.69 Now, we are standing, there're lot of stones around 00:07:03.72\00:07:06.15 and we're standing over lot of stones. 00:07:06.19\00:07:08.29 It has to do with the place 00:07:08.32\00:07:09.66 where Apostle Paul was here challenging 00:07:09.69\00:07:12.23 the Athenians and telling about the unknown God. 00:07:12.26\00:07:16.90 So it's a very famous place, 00:07:16.93\00:07:18.67 very well known from the biblical perspective 00:07:18.70\00:07:22.30 and also we're in a country where the democracy was born. 00:07:22.34\00:07:25.97 So it's very important place. 00:07:26.01\00:07:28.58 So we're standing on Mars Hill 00:07:28.61\00:07:30.41 where the Areopagus meant 00:07:30.45\00:07:32.31 and we understand from Acts 17 that 00:07:32.35\00:07:35.05 Paul was down there in the marketplace 00:07:35.08\00:07:36.82 talking about Jesus and came up here. 00:07:36.85\00:07:40.86 Now, we're some 2,000 years later 00:07:40.89\00:07:43.93 and we see it's obviously 00:07:43.96\00:07:46.26 a very different place in many ways, 00:07:46.29\00:07:49.16 but the good news about Jesus, 00:07:49.20\00:07:51.00 He is still being shared in this city. 00:07:51.03\00:07:54.00 And what about the Seventh-day Adventist Church specifically? 00:07:54.04\00:07:58.11 What sort of activities are we involved with in here? 00:07:58.14\00:08:03.75 Now with this financial crisis, 00:08:03.78\00:08:08.28 we have two challenges 00:08:08.32\00:08:12.12 and opportunities at the same time. 00:08:12.15\00:08:14.62 The challenge is dealing with this environment, 00:08:14.66\00:08:19.59 Greek Orthodox pass more than environment. 00:08:19.63\00:08:24.67 Everything is relative, relativity 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.97 knowing to seeking in other religion, belief, 00:08:27.00\00:08:30.04 so but in the same time 00:08:30.07\00:08:32.97 this crisis have done very important thing. 00:08:33.01\00:08:36.85 It changed the way that people see life 00:08:36.88\00:08:40.55 and change their orientation. 00:08:40.58\00:08:42.62 So they are more open, not specifically to religion 00:08:42.65\00:08:48.69 but to any kind of help from outside. 00:08:48.72\00:08:54.26 So we're working in that way 00:08:54.30\00:08:57.50 because public evangelism is very difficult here. 00:08:57.53\00:09:01.10 People will not come in open event, 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.77 so we're trying to appose them on one to one evangelism 00:09:03.81\00:09:09.24 and they're more sensitive to the human needs 00:09:09.28\00:09:13.52 and we're working on that level. 00:09:13.55\00:09:16.28 I'm guessing pastor if you were to rent a hall 00:09:16.32\00:09:20.12 here in Athens and invite people to come 00:09:20.16\00:09:24.59 to hear some talks on spiritual things, 00:09:24.63\00:09:26.93 you would probably find an empty audience. 00:09:26.96\00:09:28.66 They will not come, only a very few of them, 00:09:28.70\00:09:31.07 that they'll not but that is now-- 00:09:31.10\00:09:33.34 They're not interesting in that right now. 00:09:33.37\00:09:36.34 They're interesting in what they're going to eat tomorrow, 00:09:36.37\00:09:41.38 they're lost in their jobs, 00:09:41.41\00:09:43.45 so we have to work 00:09:43.48\00:09:44.81 on that level to meet their needs first. 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.42 Now, I'm guessing that Adventism is probably 00:09:47.45\00:09:50.79 seen as some sort of a foreign group, 00:09:50.82\00:09:53.29 it's not same as a Greek owned thing is that right. 00:09:53.32\00:09:56.32 Tell me about that? 00:09:56.36\00:09:57.69 Yes, yes, you're right 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.06 and basically here if you're an Orthodox 00:09:59.09\00:10:03.33 you have to be Greek, 00:10:03.37\00:10:04.87 it's very sentimental with nationality. 00:10:04.90\00:10:07.70 So it's almost like a state religion to-- 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.37 To state religion, you're right. 00:10:09.40\00:10:10.74 And has very big influence and impact on people's life, 00:10:10.77\00:10:13.91 even though they say we're Orthodox Greeks 00:10:13.94\00:10:17.98 but usually they don't attend a church, 00:10:18.01\00:10:21.68 they're not open to any other religion, 00:10:21.72\00:10:24.92 something different. 00:10:24.95\00:10:26.29 So it's more a cultural commitment from most people 00:10:26.32\00:10:28.59 and I guess in many parts of the world those of us 00:10:28.62\00:10:31.59 who call ourselves Christians, 00:10:31.63\00:10:33.03 we may only go to church for Easter 00:10:33.06\00:10:35.63 or for a wedding or something like that, 00:10:35.66\00:10:38.43 so you were talking to me earlier 00:10:38.47\00:10:40.14 about the early stages of a plan 00:10:40.17\00:10:43.47 for a center of influence, 00:10:43.51\00:10:44.84 a center of hope here in the city. 00:10:44.87\00:10:46.71 What sort of thing would you like to see happen? 00:10:46.74\00:10:49.08 What we would like to do is based 00:10:49.11\00:10:50.91 on their needs is try to find to cooperate 00:10:50.95\00:10:56.25 with some professional like doctors, lawyers, 00:10:56.28\00:11:00.42 to rent a place and each day to have a different person, 00:11:00.46\00:11:05.33 a lawyer one day for couple of hours 00:11:05.36\00:11:08.20 to give advice for free to the people, 00:11:08.23\00:11:10.60 the next day we have a doctor, 00:11:10.63\00:11:11.97 medical doctor to give them advice on medical issues, 00:11:12.00\00:11:15.64 another day probably Sunday has to do with the family, 00:11:15.67\00:11:20.24 something like that to give them advice for free 00:11:20.28\00:11:23.51 to the people and it will work, I'm sure. 00:11:23.55\00:11:26.78 Well, I'm sure it will work too 00:11:26.82\00:11:28.15 because it's basically Christ method in ministry, 00:11:28.18\00:11:30.59 isn't it, where you're mingling, 00:11:30.62\00:11:31.95 you're showing sympathy 00:11:31.99\00:11:33.32 and you're ministering to needs. 00:11:33.36\00:11:34.99 Do you have within the church 00:11:35.02\00:11:37.13 this sort of professionals you'd need for this? 00:11:37.16\00:11:41.50 We have but not as much as we want. 00:11:41.53\00:11:44.63 So we have to go outside which is very good. 00:11:44.67\00:11:47.14 Because you're involving the community 00:11:47.17\00:11:49.30 in as a community service. 00:11:49.34\00:11:50.84 And they, you know, they feel like 00:11:50.87\00:11:52.41 they're doing something good so did I say earlier 00:11:52.44\00:11:54.78 this crisis makes people to be more sensitive 00:11:54.81\00:11:57.58 about the people needs. 00:11:57.61\00:11:58.95 So I think it would be 00:11:58.98\00:12:00.32 a big problem to find volunteers. 00:12:00.35\00:12:02.75 To reach out for the people. 00:12:02.78\00:12:04.89 As you look to the future what are your hopes, 00:12:04.92\00:12:07.79 what would you like to see happen here in Greece. 00:12:07.82\00:12:11.26 I mean for the-- 00:12:11.29\00:12:12.63 For the church? For the church. 00:12:12.66\00:12:14.00 Yeah. 00:12:14.03\00:12:15.36 From my point of view 00:12:15.40\00:12:16.73 I'm-- 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.10 we're working on trying to... 00:12:18.13\00:12:21.27 ..to focus not on numbers. 00:12:21.30\00:12:25.07 Have baptisms, but to go out 00:12:25.11\00:12:29.21 and to live out doctrines, live out what we believe. 00:12:29.24\00:12:33.01 To mingle with people to be the salt of the herbs, 00:12:33.05\00:12:36.08 the light of the world, 00:12:36.12\00:12:38.25 so that's where we're working on that, 00:12:38.29\00:12:40.62 to be really involving 00:12:40.66\00:12:42.32 the society to make God known in Greece. 00:12:42.36\00:12:44.59 Yes. 00:12:44.63\00:12:46.76 Look at the outcome it will be to have some baptisms, 00:12:46.80\00:12:50.03 but that's not our focus on baptism. 00:12:50.07\00:12:53.00 To live our life 00:12:53.03\00:12:54.47 that's I'm looking forward to getting 00:12:54.50\00:12:56.07 for the Greek Adventist starts to be known in Greek society. 00:12:56.10\00:13:02.04 Yeah. Because you're-- 00:13:02.08\00:13:04.21 or you're reminding us 00:13:04.25\00:13:05.58 that we're really called to be faithful. 00:13:05.61\00:13:07.65 The baptisms are the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:13:07.68\00:13:10.75 Well, you know, 00:13:10.79\00:13:12.12 when we look at a city like Athens, 00:13:12.15\00:13:14.49 how many people do we have here? 00:13:14.52\00:13:15.86 I mean we have millions upon millions of people 00:13:15.89\00:13:20.10 and I guess rather than having someone come 00:13:20.13\00:13:22.36 and preach at them, 00:13:22.43\00:13:23.77 they wanting someone who can show 00:13:23.80\00:13:25.13 how Christianity works in practice. 00:13:25.17\00:13:26.50 You're right. You're right. 00:13:26.53\00:13:27.87 People are wanting to see now to be able to help them, 00:13:27.90\00:13:33.71 just to be-- 00:13:33.74\00:13:35.08 to see that we're human beings as they are. 00:13:35.11\00:13:37.85 you know, when we look at, 00:13:37.88\00:13:39.58 go back to 2,000 years to when Paul stood here. 00:13:39.61\00:13:42.08 He actually taught us that principle just don't come 00:13:42.12\00:13:44.39 and preach at the people, 00:13:44.42\00:13:45.75 you listen to them first 00:13:45.79\00:13:47.12 and then you connect it to their needs. 00:13:47.16\00:13:48.49 Pastor Claudio, 00:13:48.52\00:13:49.86 thank you so much for joining us. 00:13:49.89\00:13:51.23 Thank you.
