I am standing on the prime meridian line, 00:00:13.11\00:00:14.94 where zero degrees and 360 degrees longitude 00:00:14.98\00:00:19.01 are exactly the same. 00:00:19.05\00:00:20.52 On today's program mission east and west, coming up next. 00:00:20.55\00:00:24.45 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:29.69\00:00:32.16 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:32.19\00:00:35.20 He gave us a mission. 00:00:35.23\00:00:37.93 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:37.97\00:00:42.74 telling them of His love." 00:00:42.77\00:00:45.37 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:45.41\00:00:49.41 Hello, and welcome to the program 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.29 coming to you from London, England. 00:00:57.32\00:00:59.65 On Greenwich just outside of London 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.19 and along here is the prime meridian line 00:01:02.22\00:01:04.93 where literally the east begins and the west begins. 00:01:04.96\00:01:08.93 It's along here 00:01:08.96\00:01:10.30 the Greenwich meantime is calculated. 00:01:10.33\00:01:12.70 It's a still point in a moving world 00:01:12.73\00:01:15.60 and it reminds me of Jesus Christ 00:01:15.64\00:01:17.57 the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. 00:01:17.61\00:01:21.91 Jesus who is the One, who is the only way, 00:01:21.94\00:01:25.21 the only truth, the only life. 00:01:25.25\00:01:27.65 On today's program, 00:01:27.68\00:01:29.02 we'll be taking you east and west. 00:01:29.05\00:01:30.39 We will be taking you around the world 00:01:30.42\00:01:31.85 to see mission in action. 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.36 But first up let's go to, Mongolia. 00:01:33.39\00:01:35.22 Winters in Mongolia are some of the toughest on earth. 00:01:40.60\00:01:44.00 The snow, the ice, and the winds 00:01:44.03\00:01:46.60 create a brutally cold living environment. 00:01:46.63\00:01:49.80 People huddle inside their ger houses, 00:01:49.84\00:01:52.27 where it's warm and cozy. 00:01:52.31\00:01:55.54 The Mongolian people endure cold 00:01:55.58\00:01:57.35 for many months of the year, 00:01:57.38\00:01:58.91 but eventually the seasons change. 00:01:58.95\00:02:01.18 The summer brings life and activity. 00:02:01.22\00:02:03.62 Construction continues, doors open, 00:02:03.65\00:02:06.29 and horses graze on the blanket of grass 00:02:06.32\00:02:08.56 covering the ground. 00:02:08.59\00:02:10.23 For the children, this warmth means 00:02:10.26\00:02:12.36 they can play outside. 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.40 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever 00:02:14.43\00:02:19.33 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord 00:02:19.37\00:02:24.54 Each year, children from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar 00:02:24.57\00:02:28.21 gather together for summer camp. 00:02:28.24\00:02:30.55 They spend hours having fun 00:02:30.58\00:02:32.61 and spending time with each other. 00:02:32.65\00:02:35.05 There are lots of activities that help the children 00:02:35.08\00:02:37.39 learn about Jesus. 00:02:37.42\00:02:38.85 The younger kids are making lions. 00:02:38.89\00:02:40.86 While they work, 00:02:40.89\00:02:42.22 the teachers tell the story of Daniel in the lion's den. 00:02:42.26\00:02:45.33 Some of these children have never heard stories 00:02:45.36\00:02:47.40 like this before. 00:02:47.43\00:02:49.00 Imagine the excitement of hearing these Bible stories 00:02:49.03\00:02:51.87 for the first time. 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.20 Just a few years ago, Gabriel's family 00:02:54.24\00:02:56.57 moved to Mongolia 00:02:56.60\00:02:57.94 from South America to be missionaries. 00:02:57.97\00:03:00.48 Life in Mongolia is very different from South America. 00:03:00.51\00:03:04.15 The weather is different, the food is different, 00:03:04.18\00:03:06.85 and they came here not knowing anybody. 00:03:06.88\00:03:09.72 Living on the other side of the world can be hard, 00:03:09.75\00:03:12.52 but Gabriel has adjusted to living here 00:03:12.55\00:03:14.82 and has made some new friends. 00:03:14.86\00:03:17.06 This year they are joining the summer camp in a beautiful, 00:03:17.09\00:03:19.83 remote location. 00:03:19.86\00:03:21.60 One thing Gabriel and his friends 00:03:21.63\00:03:23.06 love to do is play soccer. 00:03:23.10\00:03:25.80 They can play for hours in the summer 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.77 and it makes Mongolia feel a little more 00:03:27.80\00:03:29.94 like home for Gabriel. 00:03:29.97\00:03:34.78 After their game, the team sits and talks. 00:03:34.81\00:03:37.68 Gabriel's friends don't speak Spanish, 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.85 so they communicate in English, 00:03:39.88\00:03:41.98 and Gabriel is even learning the Mongolian language. 00:03:42.02\00:03:44.85 They are very grateful for the summer camp. 00:03:44.89\00:03:47.09 This group of friends stops to thank Jesus 00:03:47.12\00:03:49.79 for this special opportunity. 00:03:49.82\00:03:52.29 Not all the kids are Christian but some are curious 00:03:52.33\00:03:54.60 about Jesus because of Gabriel and his friends. 00:03:54.63\00:03:57.87 Although Gabriel is far from home, 00:03:57.90\00:04:00.10 he knows that God has a special plan for him. 00:04:00.14\00:04:02.94 Please pray for Gabriel and other missionary kids 00:04:02.97\00:04:05.57 around the world. 00:04:05.61\00:04:07.04 Pray that they can share Jesus with others around them. 00:04:07.08\00:04:13.28 My guest is Pastor Ian Sweeney who heads up 00:04:13.31\00:04:15.95 the Seventh-day Adventist church in Britain. 00:04:15.98\00:04:18.55 Thanks for joining us, Pastor Sweeney. 00:04:18.59\00:04:20.56 You have a tremendous territory here describe it. 00:04:20.59\00:04:24.19 We're trying to reach 66 million people 00:04:24.23\00:04:27.43 across Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England 00:04:27.46\00:04:31.80 and the other places beside such as, Isle of Man, 00:04:31.83\00:04:34.57 Guernsey, the Scilly Isles. 00:04:34.60\00:04:38.17 So we have got a tremendous territory, 00:04:38.21\00:04:40.04 a lot of people to reach. 00:04:40.08\00:04:41.48 And a very diverse territory is it? 00:04:41.51\00:04:43.11 Very diverse. 00:04:43.14\00:04:44.48 Diverse amongst the indigenous population, 00:04:44.51\00:04:46.82 diverse in the context of the composition 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.62 of the members of the Seventh-day Adventist 00:04:49.65\00:04:51.85 Church in the British Isles. 00:04:51.89\00:04:53.22 Yeah. 00:04:53.25\00:04:54.59 Now, you know, we are here on the outskirts of London. 00:04:54.62\00:04:57.39 I mean, I know that there are 00:04:57.43\00:04:58.76 many Adventist churches spread around 00:04:58.79\00:05:00.73 but what are the sorts of challenges 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.10 you're facing here? 00:05:02.13\00:05:03.83 The challenges we face for example, London, 00:05:03.87\00:05:06.23 it's something like as I remember the census 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.94 over nine million people to reach. 00:05:08.97\00:05:11.64 We have tens of thousands of Adventist in London 00:05:11.67\00:05:15.14 but still there's so many, 00:05:15.18\00:05:16.64 many, people to meet and impact. 00:05:16.68\00:05:20.05 And part of what we are trying to do 00:05:20.08\00:05:21.55 and how the church be in United Kingdom 00:05:21.58\00:05:24.12 is the church that really makes an effective change 00:05:24.15\00:05:27.36 in the lives of the communities where those congregations meet. 00:05:27.39\00:05:32.26 Yeah, so what you're trying to move away from 00:05:32.29\00:05:34.80 is just having commuted churches where people come in 00:05:34.83\00:05:37.17 on Sabbath morning and leave in the afternoons 00:05:37.20\00:05:39.03 and don't make any impact. 00:05:39.07\00:05:40.40 Most definitely and in fact, 00:05:40.44\00:05:41.77 one our emphasis which we have when we called 00:05:41.80\00:05:44.11 all of our pastoral team together. 00:05:44.14\00:05:46.24 Last year was that we entitled the meeting, 00:05:46.27\00:05:49.44 Salt and Light and particularly focusing on salt. 00:05:49.48\00:05:52.41 Our emphasis is that salt is so effective 00:05:52.45\00:05:56.79 and when it touches, when it mingles, 00:05:56.82\00:05:58.75 when it interacts, salt can bring out taste, 00:05:58.79\00:06:01.96 salt can preserve, salt can do so many wonderful things. 00:06:01.99\00:06:05.49 And what which challenged our pastors to do 00:06:05.53\00:06:07.50 with their congregations is to try to ensure 00:06:07.53\00:06:10.50 that they are salt within their communities. 00:06:10.53\00:06:13.20 Because the mandate of Christ 00:06:13.23\00:06:14.97 is that we are salt of the earth. 00:06:15.00\00:06:17.17 So we're not just to be there as a presence 00:06:17.21\00:06:20.01 we are to be there interacting, changing, touching life's. 00:06:20.04\00:06:23.41 Wonderful. 00:06:23.45\00:06:24.78 Can you give me an example 00:06:24.81\00:06:26.15 of how that starting to happen now? 00:06:26.18\00:06:27.98 Okay, yeah. Sure. 00:06:28.02\00:06:29.35 I mean, so many examples. 00:06:29.38\00:06:30.72 May be I'll come to where I live 00:06:30.75\00:06:32.39 which is again little bit further out from London. 00:06:32.42\00:06:35.29 But in Elsmore community 00:06:35.32\00:06:36.73 we have a wonderful church pastor 00:06:36.76\00:06:38.53 there happened by the name of Simon Martin. 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.13 And his church they have intentionally, 00:06:41.16\00:06:44.30 they are intentional salt with in their community. 00:06:44.33\00:06:47.24 The community is not economically prosperous 00:06:47.27\00:06:50.34 or anything like that it has its challenges 00:06:50.37\00:06:53.34 but they have been so effective in being salt 00:06:53.38\00:06:56.41 amongst their community in the town of Dunstable 00:06:56.44\00:06:58.75 I should say, that the police have actually gone 00:06:58.78\00:07:01.72 to the pastor and have said look, you know, 00:07:01.75\00:07:03.82 whatever you're doing keep on doing it 00:07:03.85\00:07:05.99 because you've actually changed the community. 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.42 They have interacted for example with the, 00:07:08.46\00:07:11.26 with the children, you know, teenage delinquency in crime. 00:07:11.29\00:07:15.63 That church has made a significant difference 00:07:15.66\00:07:18.67 that crime has dropped. 00:07:18.70\00:07:20.34 Wonderful. 00:07:20.37\00:07:21.70 Now is it just pastors 00:07:21.74\00:07:23.41 who are leading out in mission here? 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.37 No, it is members as well 00:07:25.41\00:07:27.94 and we have some really great lay led 00:07:27.98\00:07:31.75 member led evangelist initiatives 00:07:31.78\00:07:34.68 where they are being salt. 00:07:34.72\00:07:36.15 There is a little town out in a Essex Way, 00:07:36.18\00:07:38.85 again just a little way out of London, where-- 00:07:38.89\00:07:41.19 and Rivendell where the people have just come and have-- 00:07:41.22\00:07:45.59 it's a village of at all means 900 people 00:07:45.63\00:07:49.33 and they have gone there 00:07:49.36\00:07:50.70 and they have made a significant impact. 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.37 The people are so engaged with what we are doing 00:07:52.40\00:07:55.80 and they have recognized that the people want, 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.74 for example friendship and company. 00:07:57.77\00:07:59.47 All right. 00:07:59.51\00:08:00.84 And that's what they have done 00:08:00.88\00:08:02.21 and they're again making the tremendous impact that way. 00:08:02.24\00:08:05.08 Now, I heard you telling your own personal story 00:08:05.11\00:08:08.18 of how you made a commitment to mingle 00:08:08.22\00:08:09.95 in your own community, briefly tell us that story. 00:08:09.98\00:08:13.42 Yeah, I've decided, I decided 00:08:13.46\00:08:17.76 to join an angling club. 00:08:17.79\00:08:21.60 I have no interest in catching fish but, but you know, 00:08:21.63\00:08:26.40 Christ has called us to be fishers of men. 00:08:26.43\00:08:28.37 I thought well, you know, what, let me become an angler. 00:08:28.40\00:08:31.87 Now the problem with it I have to admit is well two things. 00:08:31.91\00:08:35.38 Well, I can't take the cold 00:08:35.41\00:08:37.15 and these guys were sitting in the cold all night. 00:08:37.18\00:08:40.22 But the other problem as well is that that you know, 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.75 anglers actually are very-- they are very private people 00:08:42.78\00:08:46.76 and part of what angling is, is to get away from the home 00:08:46.79\00:08:49.26 where I would say in the UK. 00:08:49.29\00:08:50.86 You get away from the misses, 00:08:50.89\00:08:52.39 you hold your rod and nobody troubles you. 00:08:52.43\00:08:54.80 So my plan is a little floored that way. 00:08:54.83\00:08:57.80 Having said that, having said that I am now on the clock 00:08:57.83\00:09:01.50 as you know the angling wicker so that's the way it goes. 00:09:01.54\00:09:04.91 Yeah, so each of us needs to make 00:09:04.94\00:09:07.51 a personal commitment to put Christ method into practice. 00:09:07.54\00:09:11.01 Oh, without a doubt. Without a doubt. 00:09:11.05\00:09:12.75 We all have to take to ourselves 00:09:12.78\00:09:15.08 that Christ has called us to be salt. 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.15 And the more you say just salt and salt changes lives. 00:09:18.19\00:09:22.62 It makes things better and once we take that on 00:09:22.66\00:09:27.10 we will see the opportunities that God presents for us 00:09:27.13\00:09:29.93 to make positive changes in people lives. 00:09:29.96\00:09:32.17 Yes. 00:09:32.20\00:09:33.54 Now what are your hopes for the church here in Britain? 00:09:33.57\00:09:36.50 My hope is that every single congregation and what all-- 00:09:36.54\00:09:40.78 let me say every believer makes positive changes 00:09:40.81\00:09:45.18 wherever they are. 00:09:45.21\00:09:46.65 And we can't just see the churches being the building 00:09:46.68\00:09:49.28 or a place where we meet 00:09:49.32\00:09:51.02 but what wherever I am as salt makes a change. 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.82 So there's an intentionality behind my living 00:09:54.86\00:09:58.33 that I change lives for the better 00:09:58.36\00:10:00.80 and I would love to see that across every congregation. 00:10:00.83\00:10:03.50 Yeah, what are biggest challenges you face? 00:10:03.53\00:10:07.24 The one-- 00:10:07.27\00:10:08.60 Some of the biggest challenges is really that, 00:10:08.64\00:10:10.71 you know, people's lives are so busy and so-- 00:10:10.74\00:10:13.58 I'm talking about the member's life 00:10:13.61\00:10:15.08 as well as who they are trying to reach. 00:10:15.11\00:10:17.21 But what I believe that if-- am a true believer 00:10:17.25\00:10:20.05 that if we see ourselves is not just, 00:10:20.08\00:10:23.15 not just having to be in a place to do, 00:10:23.18\00:10:26.25 to reach people's life's but wherever I am, 00:10:26.29\00:10:29.49 we are social beings, in my work place, 00:10:29.52\00:10:32.09 in my place of education I can be salt those times 00:10:32.13\00:10:36.80 and it's about waking up every morning and saying God, 00:10:36.83\00:10:41.34 use me to be something 00:10:41.37\00:10:43.81 in somebody's life to touch them, that is life. 00:10:43.84\00:10:45.97 Fantastic. 00:10:46.01\00:10:47.48 We only had a short time 00:10:47.51\00:10:48.84 but thank you so much for sharing with us 00:10:48.88\00:10:50.25 and God bless you in your important ministry. 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.05 Thank you very much. 00:10:52.08\00:10:53.42 Please pray for Britain, pray for Pastor Sweeney, 00:10:53.45\00:10:55.92 other leaders, tremendous challenge 00:10:55.95\00:10:57.52 but wonderful things happening here. 00:10:57.55\00:10:59.35 We'll right back right straight after this break. 00:10:59.39\00:11:01.12
