Welcome back. 00:00:06.40\00:00:07.74 Next up we travel to Bergen, Norway 00:00:07.77\00:00:09.80 where Rick Kajiura 00:00:09.84\00:00:11.17 is talking to Claus Nybo the president of LifeStyle TV. 00:00:11.21\00:00:17.21 Thank you, Gary. 00:00:17.25\00:00:19.21 I'm here in Norway right now 00:00:19.25\00:00:21.02 and I'm talking with Claus Nybo 00:00:21.05\00:00:22.75 who's the president of LifeStyle TV 00:00:22.78\00:00:24.99 which is based in Sweden 00:00:25.02\00:00:26.52 but you cover all of Scandinavia 00:00:26.55\00:00:28.02 with your broadcast. 00:00:28.06\00:00:29.72 What exactly is LifeStyle TV? 00:00:29.76\00:00:32.29 LifeStyle TV is a satellite and internet broadcasting 00:00:32.33\00:00:36.16 where we cover as you say all of Scandinavia. 00:00:36.20\00:00:38.60 So Denmark, Sweden and Norway and we broadcast 24 hours a day 00:00:38.63\00:00:43.61 and I've done that now for nine years. 00:00:43.64\00:00:46.44 And this is amazing to see really 00:00:46.47\00:00:48.81 the result we get 'cause this is you may know 00:00:48.84\00:00:50.88 this is a very secular area of Europe 00:00:50.91\00:00:53.28 where you have few people attending church. 00:00:53.31\00:00:55.78 People talk about somewhere down towards 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.45 even two percent of the population 00:00:57.49\00:00:59.49 attending church. 00:00:59.52\00:01:00.86 So it's a very secular area to reach 00:01:00.89\00:01:02.22 and create its own challenges 00:01:02.26\00:01:04.86 which is I think why we're choosing 00:01:04.89\00:01:06.43 the word also LifeStyle TV trying to reach 00:01:06.46\00:01:09.56 from a lifestyle approach and a strong health approach 00:01:09.60\00:01:12.93 into a secular area of the world. 00:01:12.97\00:01:15.57 Okay and you must be having people 00:01:15.60\00:01:17.97 respond to what you're broadcasting. 00:01:18.01\00:01:20.18 Can you share some of the stories of 00:01:20.21\00:01:22.14 what impact you're having on people's lives? 00:01:22.18\00:01:24.11 We do get response. 00:01:24.15\00:01:25.71 We've people who have write us in 00:01:25.75\00:01:27.42 and we've a lot of anonymous viewers 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.72 that just simply watch and watch and enjoy it 00:01:29.75\00:01:33.12 and then all of a sudden they'd contact us 00:01:33.15\00:01:34.82 and I mean we have people that will contact 00:01:34.86\00:01:36.89 like almost out of the blue come to the church and say, 00:01:36.93\00:01:40.76 "We want to get baptized. 00:01:40.80\00:01:42.13 We've gotten to learn to know about Jesus 00:01:42.16\00:01:45.03 and we want to accept Him as our personal Savior." 00:01:45.07\00:01:48.10 And those are exciting people. 00:01:48.14\00:01:49.57 I'm thinking this summer we had one 00:01:49.60\00:01:52.07 that was actually in Finland 00:01:52.11\00:01:54.04 and a viewer that had been watching 00:01:54.08\00:01:55.84 for several years on LifeStyle TV 00:01:55.88\00:01:58.38 and then got contact with a local bible worker. 00:01:58.41\00:02:03.39 It was in the Vaasa area and it was really unique 00:02:03.42\00:02:06.05 very quick as in that very area we have the church 00:02:06.09\00:02:09.36 has like a center of hope. 00:02:09.39\00:02:11.69 A restaurant that is working as a mission station 00:02:11.73\00:02:15.50 to reach people to share people 00:02:15.53\00:02:18.20 with people about healthy lifestyle 00:02:18.23\00:02:20.20 and one of their bible workers got contact 00:02:20.24\00:02:22.00 with this viewer of ours that had been watching. 00:02:22.04\00:02:25.57 And see the Christ of baptism as result of this 00:02:25.61\00:02:29.78 wanting to give her full life to Christ 00:02:29.81\00:02:31.51 and to see these connections with a local ministry 00:02:31.55\00:02:36.32 and the work they do and how they can take a contact 00:02:36.35\00:02:39.22 and follow up on a personal level 00:02:39.25\00:02:41.86 and make those connections 00:02:41.89\00:02:43.22 and then sit down with the last questions 00:02:43.26\00:02:45.16 you know on how to explain the Bible 00:02:45.19\00:02:47.36 and lead them to the point where they're ready 00:02:47.40\00:02:50.57 to give their life full to Christ. 00:02:50.60\00:02:51.97 Now, we're here in Bergen 00:02:52.00\00:02:53.34 'cause we're looking at may be a center of hope here. 00:02:53.37\00:02:58.11 But the one that's there. 00:02:58.14\00:02:59.47 Can you tell us what they're doing? 00:02:59.51\00:03:01.44 There's this a newer center there in Vaasa, Finland. 00:03:01.48\00:03:03.95 It's an area of Finland 00:03:03.98\00:03:05.31 that is partly Swedish speaking and partly Finnish speaking. 00:03:05.35\00:03:08.52 And so they have set up a restaurant 00:03:08.55\00:03:11.05 in a shopping center where they're serving 00:03:11.09\00:03:13.39 total vegetarian food six days a week. 00:03:13.42\00:03:17.03 And for about four hours there is a lunch buffet 00:03:17.06\00:03:20.00 and so they've coming in there 00:03:20.03\00:03:22.60 a little over hundred people every day that eat 00:03:22.63\00:03:26.37 then in the often in the evenings 00:03:26.40\00:03:28.60 they would have different kind of seminars 00:03:28.64\00:03:30.91 where they invite people to come in. 00:03:30.94\00:03:32.57 They'll have health lectures or social lectures 00:03:32.61\00:03:35.14 or different things that connect with lifestyle. 00:03:35.18\00:03:37.71 And so they try to give people more than just good food 00:03:37.75\00:03:41.62 but also things that can really help them 00:03:41.65\00:03:43.39 in their life to go home and make changes 00:03:43.42\00:03:46.12 and start improving their lifestyle. 00:03:46.15\00:03:48.22 And so from these things you have people that are asking 00:03:48.26\00:03:51.29 of course, you know, what is the background 00:03:51.33\00:03:53.29 why do you do this? 00:03:53.33\00:03:54.66 Right. 00:03:54.70\00:03:56.03 And then they get into the whole discussion 00:03:56.06\00:03:57.50 about their spiritual background from the church. 00:03:57.53\00:04:01.67 We know that they often use LifeStyle TV 00:04:01.70\00:04:03.94 as a reference point and so working with that 00:04:03.97\00:04:06.88 and can refer their customers to watch TV 00:04:06.91\00:04:09.98 which is a great way, 00:04:10.01\00:04:11.35 because a lot of people have spiritual interest. 00:04:11.38\00:04:13.82 Sure. 00:04:13.85\00:04:15.18 But living in an area where it's more like 00:04:15.22\00:04:18.59 taboo to talk about it you watch at home. 00:04:18.62\00:04:21.59 And so when you sit in comfort of your living room 00:04:21.62\00:04:24.13 in the privacy of your four walls 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.66 then people engage. 00:04:26.70\00:04:28.13 They would watch in internet they watch in satellite 00:04:28.16\00:04:30.90 and then they will look and they will find something 00:04:30.93\00:04:34.00 that start changing their life. 00:04:34.04\00:04:35.37 And then they may come back 00:04:35.40\00:04:36.74 and start asking more spiritual questions 00:04:36.77\00:04:38.21 and that's where these centers are so important 00:04:38.24\00:04:41.31 that can make those connections with people 00:04:41.34\00:04:43.45 because this is all sort of searching 00:04:43.48\00:04:46.01 to define spiritual meaning in their life. 00:04:46.05\00:04:48.85 And so to have people like that is gold worth. 00:04:48.88\00:04:52.65 I guess everybody in their life has questions 00:04:52.69\00:04:55.36 about the greater meanings of the life. 00:04:55.39\00:04:57.56 Now, when you talk about vegetarian restaurants, 00:04:57.59\00:04:59.69 why vegetarian? 00:04:59.73\00:05:01.96 I think especially here in Scandinavia 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.03 it's in the time, you know, 00:05:04.07\00:05:05.73 people are very health conscience. 00:05:05.77\00:05:08.00 They are environmentally conscious 00:05:08.04\00:05:09.84 and so realizing that this is a great choice 00:05:09.87\00:05:12.57 for even the environment 00:05:12.61\00:05:14.68 to go on a vegetarian diet or total vegetarian. 00:05:14.71\00:05:17.78 Those are things people are interested in. 00:05:17.81\00:05:19.38 And especially that one is one that really connects. 00:05:19.41\00:05:22.58 Animal rights are strong so how do you treat animals 00:05:22.62\00:05:26.09 and in that way also going vegetarian 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.02 that resonate to a lot of people over here. 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.56 So there is a strong room 00:05:30.59\00:05:31.93 and especially by young people to move towards that. 00:05:31.96\00:05:34.40 And so I think if restaurant like that 00:05:34.43\00:05:36.60 is very much in and in this case 00:05:36.63\00:05:38.73 the name of the restaurant is Vegana 00:05:38.77\00:05:41.10 and so already the name is strongly indicating 00:05:41.14\00:05:44.64 that here's a restaurant that focuses 00:05:44.67\00:05:46.54 on total vegetarian diet and that's something 00:05:46.57\00:05:49.51 that connects and resonate with specially young people. 00:05:49.54\00:05:53.48 Now, you've eaten at the restaurant I assume 00:05:53.52\00:05:56.82 and when people come in there, 00:05:56.85\00:05:58.75 you know, what are they expecting 00:05:58.79\00:06:00.39 and how do they think the food tastes? 00:06:00.42\00:06:02.99 I mean just sitting and observing. 00:06:03.02\00:06:04.89 I've been there twice and I love to sitting there 00:06:04.93\00:06:07.66 quiet at a table with my food 00:06:07.70\00:06:09.26 and just observing customers come in. 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.53 You see that they're enjoying it. 00:06:11.57\00:06:13.57 They're thrilled with the food. 00:06:13.60\00:06:14.94 They bring their friends, they sit and chat at the tables 00:06:14.97\00:06:17.64 and you can see in their smiles their laughter 00:06:17.67\00:06:20.64 that this is the place they like coming. 00:06:20.68\00:06:22.24 This is like a little sanctuary for them. 00:06:22.28\00:06:24.21 You know a little breathing home where they come. 00:06:24.25\00:06:26.85 And so these are the kind of people 00:06:26.88\00:06:28.32 they worked with 00:06:28.35\00:06:29.68 and it's a wonderful atmosphere. 00:06:29.72\00:06:31.05 The food is great. 00:06:31.09\00:06:33.05 They've had different kind of cooks there 00:06:33.09\00:06:35.49 but the one that is the project leader 00:06:35.52\00:06:37.19 Hulda Carlson is doing a phenomenal job 00:06:37.23\00:06:40.00 and really leading. 00:06:40.03\00:06:41.36 She is a young girl but she had a vision 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.13 and she didn't let people deter her 00:06:44.17\00:06:46.23 because when she first started sharing it 00:06:46.27\00:06:48.07 you know people was like, 00:06:48.10\00:06:49.44 "No, the restaurant is a big work. 00:06:49.47\00:06:50.91 You can't do it." 00:06:50.94\00:06:52.27 But she was like, 00:06:52.31\00:06:53.64 "Well, if God wants me to do it." 00:06:53.68\00:06:55.18 And so by faith and a lot of prayer 00:06:55.21\00:06:57.78 she and her husband Jonathan ventured out 00:06:57.81\00:07:00.62 and got people excited around them step by step 00:07:00.65\00:07:03.69 and then they moved out 00:07:03.72\00:07:05.05 and what God has done is amazing. 00:07:05.09\00:07:07.46 Well, it sounds like a wonderful partnership. 00:07:07.49\00:07:09.26 LifeStyle TV that is reaching out 00:07:09.29\00:07:10.99 at the homes in a broad way and a center of hope 00:07:11.03\00:07:14.53 that is in a local community so people can connect 00:07:14.56\00:07:17.63 and enjoy a healthier lifestyle 00:07:17.67\00:07:19.73 and also get to know some people 00:07:19.77\00:07:21.94 who can help them may be learn about Jesus. 00:07:21.97\00:07:25.81 Exactly and I think that's the synergy 00:07:25.84\00:07:27.74 we want to try and see between our media outlets 00:07:27.78\00:07:30.98 and local churches, centers of hope 00:07:31.01\00:07:33.31 different connections between people. 00:07:33.35\00:07:35.75 If we can learn to work together 00:07:35.78\00:07:37.39 we have so much we can share with people 00:07:37.42\00:07:39.82 about a new lifestyle 00:07:39.85\00:07:41.19 that's gonna help change their lives. 00:07:41.22\00:07:42.72 Claus, thank you so much for talking with us today. 00:07:42.76\00:07:45.86 And now back to you, Gary. 00:07:45.89\00:07:47.33 Well, we continue our 360 degree view of mission 00:07:48.90\00:07:51.70 around the world 00:07:51.73\00:07:53.07 with true form of missionaries to Africa. 00:07:53.10\00:07:55.47 Doctor Arthur Bergman and Dorothy Brennwald 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.77 reminisce about starting a mission hospital 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.91 in Koza, Cameroon. 00:08:01.94\00:08:03.68 A hospital that has brought hope and healing 00:08:03.71\00:08:06.58 to thousands of people through the years. 00:08:06.61\00:08:08.85 In 1950, Seventh-day Adventist church members 00:08:12.72\00:08:15.89 came together to support medical missionary work. 00:08:15.92\00:08:19.03 Through the 13th Sabbath offering, 00:08:19.06\00:08:21.26 members like you, gave to help send doctors and nurses 00:08:21.30\00:08:24.83 to the village of Koza in Cameroon. 00:08:24.87\00:08:27.67 Soon after, a hospital was built to serve the people. 00:08:27.70\00:08:32.04 Meet Dorothy Brennwald 00:08:32.07\00:08:33.68 and her brother-in-law Dr. Arthur Bergman. 00:08:33.71\00:08:36.81 In the early years, they and their spouses 00:08:36.85\00:08:39.58 worked at Koza hospital. 00:08:39.61\00:08:42.12 These were many people in the Mandarin Mountains 00:08:42.15\00:08:45.29 who had absolutely no means of medical help. 00:08:45.32\00:08:50.36 It was very sad. 00:08:50.39\00:08:51.79 We saw things here 00:08:51.83\00:08:53.40 that we never studied at all, in school. 00:08:53.43\00:08:57.97 Before we were there, 00:08:58.00\00:09:00.40 they were crying for three nights 00:09:00.44\00:09:03.61 just almost constantly 00:09:03.64\00:09:06.04 because somebody was always dying. 00:09:06.07\00:09:08.58 And that's one thing the hospital did. 00:09:08.61\00:09:12.28 I think that's one of our frustrations, 00:09:12.31\00:09:14.48 they wouldn't come at first, they were afraid of us. 00:09:14.52\00:09:18.52 And they would wait 00:09:18.55\00:09:22.16 till they get deathly sick before they'd come. 00:09:22.19\00:09:25.69 They were quite overwhelmed with Koza 00:09:25.73\00:09:28.73 because it was so fresh, so new 00:09:28.76\00:09:32.50 and they were amazed. 00:09:32.53\00:09:36.60 Yeah, they're bringing a patient in. 00:09:37.87\00:09:39.77 He came with his car. 00:09:42.58\00:09:44.35 Sometimes they came in trucks. 00:09:44.38\00:09:46.61 Yeah. 00:09:46.65\00:09:49.95 They bring their entire family, 00:09:49.98\00:09:51.65 they bring somebody to cook food for them 00:09:51.69\00:09:53.99 in case they need to stay. 00:09:54.02\00:09:56.62 They'd stay right there with them. 00:09:56.66\00:09:58.63 They would feed them, they would help them, 00:09:58.66\00:10:01.36 they never left them, they usually stayed. 00:10:01.40\00:10:05.07 Koza hospital quickly grew to an eight room dispensary 00:10:05.10\00:10:08.97 with operating room, obstetrical unit and pharmacy. 00:10:09.00\00:10:13.68 As hospital expansion took place 00:10:13.71\00:10:16.28 the reach of invaluable medical service 00:10:16.31\00:10:18.71 also crossed borders. 00:10:18.75\00:10:21.15 Sometimes Fred and I would go on our bicycles 00:10:21.18\00:10:24.12 to an area about a mile away or something. 00:10:24.15\00:10:27.96 We'd hold bush clinics. 00:10:27.99\00:10:31.83 Well, we're gonna get there pretty soon 00:10:31.86\00:10:34.96 not really many good roads. 00:10:35.00\00:10:36.80 Wasn't it once a week? I think so. 00:10:41.70\00:10:44.91 We couldn't take a lot of medication along. 00:10:44.94\00:10:47.38 We took the things we thought we would need most 00:10:47.41\00:10:49.68 and encourage them to come to the hospital 00:10:49.71\00:10:52.51 if they needed more care. 00:10:52.55\00:10:55.38 As Dorothy and Arthur spent their days 00:10:55.42\00:10:57.25 serving the people of Koza, 00:10:57.29\00:10:59.09 they had fun learning a new culture 00:10:59.12\00:11:01.32 and observing the different customs 00:11:01.36\00:11:03.16 of the local people. 00:11:03.19\00:11:05.19 That's how they dressed. 00:11:05.23\00:11:08.43 And the men wore a smile remember? 00:11:08.46\00:11:10.43 They were very gentle people. I like that about them. 00:11:13.74\00:11:19.21 That's the kind of hut that we lived in, 00:11:19.24\00:11:20.98 except we had three, three together. 00:11:21.01\00:11:23.24 And some of the walls were stone 00:11:27.28\00:11:29.42 and others just mud. 00:11:29.45\00:11:30.79 Most of them were mud I think. 00:11:30.82\00:11:34.32 When we went there, we went there for life, 00:11:34.36\00:11:38.09 until Jesus would come. 00:11:38.13\00:11:41.03 Since those early years, 00:11:41.06\00:11:42.53 many other Adventist missionaries 00:11:42.56\00:11:44.63 have taken up the challenge to support Koza 00:11:44.67\00:11:47.10 and other hospitals around the world. 00:11:47.14\00:11:49.74 Through medical mission, 00:11:49.77\00:11:51.51 people have been blessed here and now, 00:11:51.54\00:11:54.01 and for eternity. 00:11:54.04\00:11:56.81 And when we went back in 1985 and that was 25 years after 00:11:56.85\00:12:01.65 we had been there, we went back for four months. 00:12:01.68\00:12:06.05 There were tens of thousands of many more people 00:12:06.09\00:12:09.32 who had been baptized and that just thrilled me. 00:12:09.36\00:12:13.83 Your prayerful support and mission offering 00:12:13.86\00:12:16.43 continue to assist thousands with health, 00:12:16.46\00:12:19.53 truth and hope. 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.24 Well, thank you so much for joining us today 00:12:33.11\00:12:35.25 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:12:35.28\00:12:37.52 I hope that you've been inspired and challenged 00:12:37.55\00:12:40.19 by what you've seen and heard from mission around the world. 00:12:40.22\00:12:43.73 And thank you so much for your continuing prayers 00:12:43.76\00:12:46.09 and financial support for mission, 00:12:46.13\00:12:48.86 it does make a difference. 00:12:48.90\00:12:50.27 Before we go, 00:12:50.30\00:12:51.63 we'd like to send you a special offer 00:12:51.67\00:12:53.23 as just a small thank you 00:12:53.27\00:12:54.67 for your continuing support of Adventist Mission. 00:12:54.70\00:12:57.31 It's a book called "God's Great Missionaries" 00:12:57.34\00:13:00.44 and in here you'll find 00:13:00.48\00:13:01.81 lots of different stories of mission around the world 00:13:01.84\00:13:03.65 and you'll also read chapters focused on Bible characters 00:13:03.68\00:13:08.18 and how they were involved in mission 00:13:08.22\00:13:10.12 and are an example for us today. 00:13:10.15\00:13:13.42 Well, that's it for today's program. 00:13:13.46\00:13:15.42 I'm Gary Krause for Adventist Mission 00:13:15.46\00:13:17.26 and I hope you can join me next time 00:13:17.29\00:13:19.39 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:13:19.43\00:13:21.96
