So behind me is Pastor Sam, a young pastor here in Britain 00:00:07.14\00:00:10.97 who is one of the people who came up with the idea 00:00:11.01\00:00:14.44 of the Sabbath sofa, which you can see here 00:00:14.48\00:00:16.38 in the middle of the street. 00:00:16.41\00:00:17.78 And pastor Sam has this vision of introducing 00:00:17.81\00:00:22.05 the concept of the Sabbath to people, 00:00:22.08\00:00:24.75 busy people walking down the street 00:00:24.79\00:00:26.32 and he and his team have trialed it 00:00:26.35\00:00:28.76 in many, many different places 00:00:28.79\00:00:30.43 and it's just amazing how people react and open up 00:00:30.46\00:00:33.43 and talk about the busyness of their life 00:00:33.46\00:00:35.93 and how they're open to finding 00:00:35.96\00:00:38.27 a little bit of peace every week. 00:00:38.30\00:00:39.63 And when the concept of the Sabbath 00:00:39.67\00:00:41.87 is shared with people, the idea of 24 hours a week 00:00:41.90\00:00:44.91 where you can be immersed in family, friends, 00:00:44.94\00:00:48.54 get away from materialism, 00:00:48.58\00:00:50.28 get away from work, markets, busyness, shopping 00:00:50.31\00:00:53.31 and all that sort of thing. 00:00:53.35\00:00:54.68 People really love the idea, 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.75 which should be fairly natural since it was created by God. 00:00:56.79\00:00:59.25 So, Pastor Sam is talking with some people, 00:00:59.29\00:01:02.16 it's a very cold day here in Watford, 00:01:02.19\00:01:04.13 just outside of London 00:01:04.16\00:01:05.96 and so most people are just trying to keep warm little 00:01:05.99\00:01:08.53 and stop and sit down at a sofa, 00:01:08.56\00:01:10.63 but let's see what happens. 00:01:10.67\00:01:12.57 Hi, My name is Sam. What's your name? 00:01:12.60\00:01:14.34 Liza. Liza. 00:01:14.37\00:01:15.90 Terry. This is my friend Gary. 00:01:15.94\00:01:18.24 Hi, Terry and Liza. Okay, hi. 00:01:18.27\00:01:20.98 Yeah, so I'm assuming that you saw the sign, 00:01:21.01\00:01:24.51 did you notice what it said? 00:01:24.55\00:01:26.45 Yeah, are you tired? Have a seat. 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.92 So are you tired? 00:01:29.95\00:01:31.82 I'm a little weary, I could always sit down 00:01:31.85\00:01:34.42 when there is a comfy piece of furniture. 00:01:34.46\00:01:36.46 Well, you're looking pretty relaxed actually. 00:01:36.49\00:01:38.26 Yeah. Yeah. 00:01:38.29\00:01:40.03 We've had a relaxed afternoon. 00:01:40.06\00:01:41.46 Yeah we have. 00:01:41.50\00:01:42.83 Well that's good, a day off work? 00:01:42.86\00:01:44.20 Half a day for me, and you were working 00:01:44.23\00:01:45.57 from home earlier. 00:01:45.60\00:01:46.94 Yes, I was and it's now half past four 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.70 for any of my employers who are watching 00:01:48.74\00:01:50.87 so I am finished for the day. 00:01:50.91\00:01:52.47 Okay. 00:01:52.51\00:01:53.84 So can I ask in general, in terms of your lifestyle, 00:01:53.88\00:01:57.65 do you tend to work long hours? 00:01:57.68\00:02:01.38 It varies. Yeah. 00:02:01.42\00:02:02.88 You're nine to five most days, aren't you? 00:02:02.92\00:02:04.45 And I'm sort of all over the place. 00:02:04.49\00:02:06.32 I can work any hours day or night really. 00:02:06.35\00:02:08.89 Okay. All Right. 00:02:08.92\00:02:10.66 We're trying to gauge whether well, Watford in general, 00:02:10.69\00:02:14.36 people in general society are exhausted. 00:02:14.40\00:02:17.97 If I was to say to you, that we generally 00:02:18.00\00:02:21.57 are like machines that keep going 00:02:21.60\00:02:23.10 and going and going as a society, 00:02:23.14\00:02:25.17 would you disagree or agree with me? 00:02:25.21\00:02:28.74 I'd say that every machine needs fuel, 00:02:28.78\00:02:32.91 and that that can be exhausted 00:02:32.95\00:02:35.32 and I would agree that 00:02:35.35\00:02:37.39 the majority of western society is fatigued. 00:02:37.42\00:02:40.76 I think the serious issue is stress 00:02:40.79\00:02:43.83 and exhaustion in general. 00:02:43.86\00:02:45.19 I mean, a lot of people 00:02:45.23\00:02:46.56 who I know have genuine sleep issues. 00:02:46.59\00:02:49.43 I'm lucky I still get, 00:02:49.46\00:02:51.37 you know, a seven or an eight hour sleep, 00:02:51.40\00:02:53.20 and I can do that effortlessly but I know that 00:02:53.23\00:02:55.80 that's rare for a woman of my years these days. 00:02:55.84\00:02:58.91 Okay. All right. 00:02:58.94\00:03:00.58 What do you mean of your years, you're not that old? 00:03:00.61\00:03:02.58 Well, late 30s. 00:03:02.61\00:03:04.41 Yeah. 00:03:04.45\00:03:06.72 You can quite easily forget what a stop button is 00:03:06.75\00:03:08.58 and that you're actually allowed to press it. 00:03:08.62\00:03:10.45 And I think we've recently rediscovered 00:03:10.49\00:03:11.92 our stop points haven't we? 00:03:11.95\00:03:13.52 After being part of the machine for a long time 00:03:13.56\00:03:16.16 and getting ground down within it and by it. 00:03:16.19\00:03:18.89 But we have recently discovered that 00:03:18.93\00:03:20.26 we've got a stop point 00:03:20.30\00:03:21.63 and we're fully allowing ourselves 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.06 to press it on a frequent basis. 00:03:23.10\00:03:24.90 I had to wrestle him. 00:03:24.93\00:03:27.90 Not literally. I'm really, happy. 00:03:27.94\00:03:30.77 I'm really happy that both of you have identified that 00:03:30.81\00:03:33.31 and you're really making an effort, 00:03:33.34\00:03:34.68 or it seems as so, you're making efforts to try 00:03:34.71\00:03:36.81 and, I guess I don't know 00:03:36.85\00:03:38.18 if medicate is the right word for it but-- 00:03:38.21\00:03:41.32 It is. It's self-medication. 00:03:41.35\00:03:42.68 Okay. 00:03:42.72\00:03:44.05 So its-- Not medical medication. 00:03:44.09\00:03:45.89 It's very consciously done, 00:03:45.92\00:03:47.26 you've got to fight for it you know. 00:03:47.29\00:03:48.96 So it's evident that in society people keep going. 00:03:48.99\00:03:53.19 What's the solution? 00:03:53.23\00:03:57.40 To remember that they've got a stop button 00:03:57.43\00:03:58.77 and that their allowed to press it regularly, 00:03:58.80\00:04:00.37 I think, for me. 00:04:00.40\00:04:02.40 Yeah, and of course it's like socioeconomic factors that 00:04:02.44\00:04:08.08 come into play there and depending on the lifestyle 00:04:08.11\00:04:12.01 you want to keep you've got to be real with yourself. 00:04:12.05\00:04:14.72 You know, just all these people 00:04:14.75\00:04:17.05 busting their gut to have immaculate homesteads 00:04:17.09\00:04:19.99 and immaculate gardens 00:04:20.02\00:04:23.22 and keeping up with everybody's ideal expectations. 00:04:23.26\00:04:26.06 So we've got a concept that we'd like to, 00:04:26.09\00:04:29.60 get you to think about. 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.90 We'd like you to imagine something. 00:04:31.93\00:04:33.27 Gary, would you like to tell them a bit more about it? 00:04:33.30\00:04:35.24 Well, just if you would imagine 00:04:35.27\00:04:37.04 that every week for 24 hours you could just switch off, 00:04:37.07\00:04:41.31 so in that 24 hours there's no shopping, 00:04:41.34\00:04:46.85 there's no business, 00:04:46.88\00:04:48.28 there's no getting on the internet 00:04:48.32\00:04:49.92 to check up on your stocks and shares 00:04:49.95\00:04:51.69 if you happen to have them 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.05 and you just invest that in family and friends 00:04:53.09\00:04:55.76 and rest, how does that sound? 00:04:55.79\00:04:57.83 It sounds like a wonderful idea. 00:04:57.86\00:04:59.19 Yeah. Dream come true. 00:04:59.23\00:05:00.90 Do you think it's feasible? 00:05:00.93\00:05:02.80 Absolutely, it is. 00:05:02.83\00:05:04.80 For most people. For western society? 00:05:04.83\00:05:08.94 The way it functions at the moment 00:05:08.97\00:05:10.31 I think you'd get a lot of resistance, 00:05:10.34\00:05:12.11 for individuals I think it's feasible. 00:05:12.14\00:05:15.38 To make businesses is actually close 00:05:15.41\00:05:17.61 for a specified 24 hours I think you would have 00:05:17.65\00:05:19.71 your work cut out for you. 00:05:19.75\00:05:21.28 Because we very much have a 24/7 00:05:21.32\00:05:23.89 functionality don't we, in many regards. 00:05:23.92\00:05:25.72 But let's just say that we could possibly try 00:05:25.75\00:05:29.72 and opt for something like this 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.39 would it give much more positively 00:05:31.43\00:05:33.66 to use as human beings? 00:05:33.70\00:05:35.13 I think it would. 00:05:35.16\00:05:36.50 I grew up in a time when shops closed half days, 00:05:36.53\00:05:38.60 Wednesdays and shops were never open on Sundays. 00:05:38.63\00:05:42.50 Nothing happened on a Sunday, 00:05:42.54\00:05:44.01 we did have telephone in the house, 00:05:44.04\00:05:45.51 we did have a TV, we did watch that, 00:05:45.54\00:05:47.91 but it was very much a family time. 00:05:47.94\00:05:50.11 And yeah going back to that 00:05:50.15\00:05:51.48 I don't think would be a bad thing at all. 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.52 In fact, we're quite a rare breed in that sense 00:05:53.55\00:05:55.55 that we actually don't have we don't watch TV in our home 00:05:55.58\00:06:00.16 and we still read books 00:06:00.19\00:06:02.42 and our child has very limited access 00:06:02.46\00:06:04.99 to technology in general. 00:06:05.03\00:06:07.93 We're aware of the fact for our older children 00:06:07.96\00:06:10.37 that they can get consumed by this idea of being pulled in 00:06:10.40\00:06:15.40 and actually we prefer our families to have down time. 00:06:15.44\00:06:19.11 So would you find it strange to learn that 00:06:19.14\00:06:23.48 in my entire life for one day a week 00:06:23.51\00:06:26.68 I have never watched television, 00:06:26.72\00:06:29.12 I have never worked and I went through university 00:06:29.15\00:06:31.59 and I did absolutely no study 00:06:31.62\00:06:33.82 and done exactly what I just described to you, 00:06:33.86\00:06:35.59 do that sound strange? 00:06:35.62\00:06:36.96 One day per week? 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.33 One day per week, every week of my life. 00:06:38.36\00:06:39.69 No, it doesn't sound strange at all. 00:06:39.73\00:06:41.30 That's like a Sunday in our house. 00:06:41.33\00:06:43.37 I mean, it sounds like an excellent idea. 00:06:43.40\00:06:46.17 Congratulations for putting it into practice. 00:06:46.20\00:06:48.24 Yeah, we are going to definitely maintaining it. 00:06:48.27\00:06:50.07 There actually 18 million of us 00:06:50.11\00:06:52.44 who try our best to do this globally, 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.54 I'm one of them and some of my team here are doing that. 00:06:54.58\00:06:57.68 We try to adopt this ancient concept called the Sabbath, 00:06:57.71\00:07:01.62 have you ever heard of it? 00:07:01.65\00:07:03.05 Yeah, it's a-- leads to Judaism. 00:07:03.08\00:07:07.36 A holy day, a day of rest. 00:07:07.39\00:07:09.12 So it well-- Judaism is Saturday isn't 00:07:09.16\00:07:11.69 it usually in the UK? 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.33 Christianity, Sunday. Yeah, mainstream. 00:07:13.36\00:07:16.77 We also believe in from Friday sunset 00:07:16.80\00:07:20.14 to Saturday sunset is the main 00:07:20.17\00:07:22.70 and most busiest time in western society. 00:07:22.74\00:07:26.74 I believe it and I think we believe it 00:07:26.78\00:07:28.34 that it can really dramatically change society. 00:07:28.38\00:07:31.11 So we're here today to introduce you 00:07:31.15\00:07:32.78 to the Sabbath sofa, which you're sitting on. 00:07:32.81\00:07:36.22 It's been in various different locations 00:07:36.25\00:07:38.32 across the globe here and there, 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.82 so you're fortunate to be on it. 00:07:40.86\00:07:42.19 And we'd like to inspire you today 00:07:42.22\00:07:44.16 to experience the Sabbath for yourself. 00:07:44.19\00:07:46.93 You've described essences of it in little ways in your own life 00:07:46.96\00:07:50.50 and I commend you and applaud you for doing that 00:07:50.53\00:07:52.77 and we really hope that you can discover 00:07:52.80\00:07:54.37 the Sabbath in a special way for you. 00:07:54.40\00:07:55.87 So we're here today to inspire you, 00:07:55.90\00:07:57.71 to tell you you're not a machine 00:07:57.74\00:07:59.21 and you can experience the Sabbath too. 00:07:59.24\00:08:01.54 So thank you very much. Sounds very good. 00:08:01.58\00:08:03.04 Thank you very much. Yeah, thank you. 00:08:03.08\00:08:04.41 Thank you. Nice to meet you. 00:08:04.45\00:08:05.78 Thank you very much. Well done. 00:08:05.81\00:08:10.59 The Sabbath sofa is a creative idea. 00:08:10.62\00:08:12.75 It was a brain child 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.12 of just three young pastors here in Britain. 00:08:14.16\00:08:16.32 They got together, prayed together, 00:08:16.36\00:08:18.19 how can we make a connection with the community 00:08:18.23\00:08:20.06 and you don't make much more of a connection 00:08:20.10\00:08:22.63 than putting a sofa in the middle of a busy street. 00:08:22.66\00:08:25.50 And its just amazing I've witnessed over and over 00:08:25.53\00:08:27.94 how people come and sit down, take a seat 00:08:27.97\00:08:31.31 and then you just start talking to them 00:08:31.34\00:08:32.74 about the busyness of life, the stress of life, 00:08:32.77\00:08:35.21 and one after another they say yeah, 00:08:35.24\00:08:37.55 your life can be exhausting 00:08:37.58\00:08:38.91 and when you introduce the concept of the Sabbath, 00:08:38.95\00:08:42.08 the 24 hour rest that God gave us 00:08:42.12\00:08:44.85 their faces light up and they say oh if only. 00:08:44.89\00:08:48.86 And this connection is continued 00:08:48.89\00:08:52.93 because as you see afterward Sam talks to the people, 00:08:52.96\00:08:57.63 he makes sure that they get a photo together 00:08:57.67\00:09:00.10 and he says we're going 00:09:00.14\00:09:01.47 to put this photo up on our Facebook page. 00:09:01.50\00:09:04.37 And so that connection continues 00:09:04.41\00:09:06.04 because they'll go to the Facebook site 00:09:06.07\00:09:08.21 Sabbath Sofa to see their photos. 00:09:08.24\00:09:10.98 There's the links where they can continue 00:09:11.01\00:09:12.85 to keep in touch via social media. 00:09:12.88\00:09:15.38 So it's a tremendous way to keep up 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.05 that contact to mingle with people 00:09:17.09\00:09:19.69 and to make that connection for Jesus Christ. 00:09:19.72\00:09:27.10 Next stop we travel to Nepal 00:09:27.13\00:09:28.76 and we hear the story of how a man found Jesus 00:09:28.80\00:09:31.43 through Adventist World Radio. 00:09:31.47\00:09:33.90 Rajesh Hada is the studio manager 00:09:40.21\00:09:42.74 for Adventist World Radio in Nepal. 00:09:42.78\00:09:45.88 When he was younger he had a strong interest in music 00:09:45.91\00:09:49.02 and one day he decided to take his interest to the next level. 00:09:49.05\00:09:52.99 My family background is very musical, 00:09:53.02\00:09:55.22 family environment very musical. 00:09:55.26\00:09:57.89 I used to sing a song playing the guitar with my father. 00:09:57.93\00:10:03.73 Then my, father, my family suggested to me, 00:10:03.77\00:10:07.50 why don't you open your own studio? 00:10:07.54\00:10:10.51 Rajesh took his family's suggestion to heart 00:10:10.54\00:10:13.04 and in 1996 he opened a studio 00:10:13.07\00:10:15.91 in the capital city of Kathmandu. 00:10:15.94\00:10:19.01 Right from the beginning business was booming 00:10:19.05\00:10:21.55 and Rajesh was very busy. 00:10:21.58\00:10:23.95 One day an Adventist Radio World worker 00:10:23.99\00:10:26.29 came into his studio and asked if Rajesh 00:10:26.32\00:10:28.89 could do some recording for their programs. 00:10:28.92\00:10:31.46 At this point he didn't know anything about Jesus 00:10:31.49\00:10:34.76 but he agreed to do the job anyway. 00:10:34.80\00:10:37.33 Over time he was draw to the music 00:10:43.67\00:10:46.27 and to the sermons that played through his speakers all day. 00:10:46.31\00:10:49.78 Rajesh decided to give his heart to Jesus 00:10:49.81\00:10:52.11 because of the work he was doing. 00:10:52.15\00:10:56.42 Now he has a passion to reach the Nepali people. 00:10:56.45\00:10:59.45 He knows that the people of Nepal 00:10:59.49\00:11:01.22 are open to hearing the message. 00:11:01.26\00:11:04.23 In the country of Nepal many stations are commercial. 00:11:04.26\00:11:08.26 So if we put it on the commercial radio station, 00:11:08.30\00:11:11.63 then non-Christians also listen to out programs also. 00:11:11.67\00:11:15.57 And many of the listeners will call in with requests. 00:11:15.60\00:11:18.94 For prayer for them and ask for books, Bibles. 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.91 So they are very interested. So it's very effective. 00:11:21.94\00:11:27.25 I think it's very effective. 00:11:27.28\00:11:30.05 Families like Chinbahadur and Bijuri 00:11:30.09\00:11:32.29 came to know the gospel message through the radio broadcast. 00:11:32.32\00:11:36.12 This couple owns a small shop and farm to sustain themselves. 00:11:36.16\00:11:40.90 A few years ago their son was sick. 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.63 They took him to the local healer 00:11:43.67\00:11:45.43 but the son's condition got worse, 00:11:45.47\00:11:47.50 and he eventually died. 00:11:47.54\00:11:49.20 They fell into deep depression until one day 00:11:49.24\00:11:51.84 they heard encouraging words on the radio. 00:11:51.87\00:11:54.38 They wrote down the number at the end broadcast 00:11:54.41\00:11:57.18 and called everyday to ask for prayer. 00:11:57.21\00:12:00.55 The staff from Adventist World Radio 00:12:00.58\00:12:02.68 eventually came to visit and bring encouragement. 00:12:02.72\00:12:07.06 We can't read so we learn more about Jesus 00:12:07.09\00:12:09.56 by listening to the radio. 00:12:09.59\00:12:12.16 In many cases people cannot read 00:12:12.19\00:12:14.06 or don't have access to Christian materials. 00:12:14.10\00:12:16.70 The radio is their only opportunity 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.23 to hear the gospel message. 00:12:19.27\00:12:21.77 Yes, we want to learn more and we want to live for Jesus. 00:12:21.80\00:12:26.57 The radio is a powerful tool 00:12:26.61\00:12:28.51 for reaching the un-reached in all areas of the world. 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.98 Workers like Rajesh dedicate their lives to God's mission. 00:12:32.01\00:12:36.12 The result is that people throughout Nepal 00:12:36.15\00:12:38.79 have the opportunity to hear the message 00:12:38.82\00:12:41.09 and give their lives to Jesus. 00:12:41.12\00:12:43.49 Please pray for the work being done in Nepal. 00:12:43.53\00:12:46.19 Pray for workers like Rajesh 00:12:46.23\00:12:48.20 who play a key role in supporting this work. 00:12:48.23\00:12:51.30 And thank you for your support of mission, 00:12:51.33\00:12:53.94 through Adventist World Radio. 00:12:53.97\00:13:01.71 Well, I hope you've enjoyed today's 00:13:01.74\00:13:03.08 360 degree view of mission around the world. 00:13:03.11\00:13:06.31 From huge cities like London to more rural areas, 00:13:06.35\00:13:10.35 many people are sharing the light of God's love 00:13:10.39\00:13:13.05 and thank you so much for your continuing prayers 00:13:13.09\00:13:16.22 and financial support for mission around the world. 00:13:16.26\00:13:19.83 Before we go I'd love to send you a small gift 00:13:19.86\00:13:23.03 as a small thank you for your continuing support for mission. 00:13:23.06\00:13:27.07 If you live in North America 00:13:27.10\00:13:28.44 we'd love to send you a small gift, 00:13:28.47\00:13:30.51 it's this book God's Great Missionaries 00:13:30.54\00:13:33.17 full of inspiring stories 00:13:33.21\00:13:34.94 of God's missionaries in the Bible 00:13:34.98\00:13:37.35 and how the principles of their life 00:13:37.38\00:13:39.25 and work still apply today. 00:13:39.28\00:13:42.25 For Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause 00:13:42.28\00:13:44.05 and I hope you can join me next time here 00:13:44.09\00:13:46.52 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:13:46.55\00:13:49.49
