She knows the culture. 00:02:33.42\00:02:36.38 She mingles with the people. 00:02:36.42\00:02:38.15 New Delhi is one of the most densely populated cities, 00:02:43.36\00:02:46.36 with millions of people who don't know Jesus. 00:02:46.39\00:02:50.97 This is a challenging area to spread the gospel. 00:02:51.00\00:02:54.10 Over time, Kamala has made friends in her community. 00:02:54.14\00:02:57.64 Her relationships have allowed her 00:02:57.67\00:02:59.07 to share her Christian faith. 00:02:59.11\00:03:04.08 By God's grace, people have been open 00:03:04.11\00:03:06.58 to the gospel message 00:03:06.61\00:03:07.98 and want to learn more about Jesus. 00:03:08.02\00:03:15.99 Kamala speaks every Sabbath to a growing congregation 00:03:16.02\00:03:18.79 that meets in this small room. 00:03:18.83\00:03:21.80 Initially there was no organized group here. 00:03:27.67\00:03:30.81 There were just some people 00:03:30.84\00:03:32.17 scattered around here and there. 00:03:32.21\00:03:34.48 I used to pray to the Lord to give me a congregation here. 00:03:34.51\00:03:38.35 Slowly people started coming to listen to the message 00:03:38.38\00:03:41.28 that I presented. 00:03:41.32\00:03:44.02 Kamala visits people in their homes to talk 00:03:44.05\00:03:46.22 and get to know them. 00:03:46.25\00:03:48.32 Through relationships and word of mouth, 00:03:48.36\00:03:50.53 this group has grown from a small few, 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.83 to a crowded room. 00:03:52.86\00:03:57.77 I take my children to school 00:03:57.80\00:03:59.73 and after that I take some of the ladies 00:03:59.77\00:04:02.04 from my congregation with me 00:04:02.07\00:04:04.07 and we go to different houses where the needs are. 00:04:04.11\00:04:07.08 May be the need for prayer, the need for visitation, 00:04:07.11\00:04:10.78 the need for conversation 00:04:10.81\00:04:12.71 because they are all feeling down. 00:04:12.75\00:04:15.12 That's how I do it. 00:04:15.15\00:04:16.99 I do small group meetings, visiting door to door, 00:04:17.02\00:04:21.12 house to house, 00:04:21.16\00:04:22.49 and that's how people enjoy the church here. 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.83 One of the members who helps is Karishma. 00:04:25.86\00:04:28.86 She came to know Jesus because of Kamala. 00:04:28.90\00:04:32.67 Kamala visited Karishma's house regularly to talk. 00:04:32.70\00:04:36.50 Karishma's mother had been sick in bed for 25 years 00:04:36.54\00:04:39.81 with little hope for recovery. 00:04:39.84\00:04:42.01 Since she was always home, 00:04:42.04\00:04:43.71 she heard them talking about Jesus. 00:04:43.75\00:04:46.21 Karishma's mother did not want her daughter 00:04:46.25\00:04:48.35 to become a Christian. 00:04:48.38\00:04:50.09 She warned her not to trust Kamala. 00:04:50.12\00:04:53.15 Karishma didn't want to upset her mother, 00:04:59.33\00:05:01.53 but she truly believed the Adventist message. 00:05:01.56\00:05:04.60 So she went against her mother's advice 00:05:04.63\00:05:06.94 and was baptized. 00:05:06.97\00:05:08.90 She prayed faithfully for her mother every day. 00:05:08.94\00:05:12.14 Kamala continued to visit 00:05:12.17\00:05:13.81 and began telling Karishma's mother 00:05:13.84\00:05:15.44 of Jesus' healing power. 00:05:15.48\00:05:17.98 Eventually, Karishma's mother 00:05:18.01\00:05:19.88 accepted Jesus into her life as well. 00:05:19.91\00:05:23.72 As soon as she accepted Jesus into her life, 00:05:23.75\00:05:26.49 she was able to walk again. 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.69 After 25 years of sickness, she was healed. 00:05:28.72\00:05:32.86 God's healing power transcends all impossibilities. 00:05:32.89\00:05:38.20 As congregations like this continue to grow, 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.97 so does our world's population. 00:05:41.00\00:05:43.30 Millions of people around the world don't know Jesus. 00:05:43.34\00:05:47.74 Global Mission pioneers are working hard to keep up 00:05:47.78\00:05:50.81 with the great need. 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.48 Please pray for Global Mission pioneers like Kamala, 00:05:52.51\00:05:55.98 who are sharing Jesus' love. 00:05:56.02\00:05:59.15 Thank you for supporting mission. 00:05:59.19\00:06:03.86 Well, it's a cold winter's day here in Watford, 00:06:03.89\00:06:06.96 a suburb of London 00:06:07.00\00:06:08.66 and it's raining so we're under a bridge. 00:06:08.70\00:06:11.30 And I am talking with Ana and Pastor Sam, 00:06:11.33\00:06:15.00 and we are sitting on 00:06:15.04\00:06:16.60 what is known as a Sabbath sofa. 00:06:16.64\00:06:19.94 Ana, what is a Sabbath sofa? 00:06:19.97\00:06:21.81 The Sabbath sofa is a place where people can sit down 00:06:21.84\00:06:25.91 and rest and take a break from the craziness of life. 00:06:25.95\00:06:30.25 Okay, and this is a portable sofa? 00:06:30.29\00:06:32.79 Yes. Okay. 00:06:32.82\00:06:34.16 Where did this idea come from, Sam? 00:06:34.19\00:06:36.36 Well this idea originally came from a team 00:06:36.39\00:06:39.36 of three pastors who put our minds together 00:06:39.39\00:06:41.66 to see how can we be creative 00:06:41.70\00:06:43.97 in expressing the principle of the Sabbath to everybody, 00:06:44.00\00:06:48.70 and so we thought why not place a random sofa in a busy area 00:06:48.74\00:06:52.91 and invite people to come and sit down 00:06:52.94\00:06:54.94 and just experience it for themselves 00:06:54.98\00:06:56.41 even in a small way, 00:06:56.44\00:06:58.01 and we hope to inspire people that way. 00:06:58.05\00:06:59.81 Okay, so where did you first trial it 00:06:59.85\00:07:02.78 and what happened? 00:07:02.82\00:07:04.22 Wow, it was in Central London 00:07:04.25\00:07:07.96 in a busy area called Marble Arch. 00:07:07.99\00:07:12.19 One of my friends and Pastors Vili Costescu 00:07:12.23\00:07:16.00 helped me out to set it up. 00:07:16.03\00:07:17.57 We set the sofa in a van 00:07:17.60\00:07:19.53 and we came down into Marble Arch 00:07:19.57\00:07:22.07 and I was initially very scared to do it. 00:07:22.10\00:07:26.54 I thought people were going to reject me immediately. 00:07:26.57\00:07:29.44 We plopped it down, there were people walking 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.35 left, right, and center and the first lady 00:07:31.38\00:07:33.85 that came to sit down on the sofa was so receptive. 00:07:33.88\00:07:38.45 I'm still in contact with her to today. 00:07:38.49\00:07:40.49 Is that right? So it's really, really-- 00:07:40.52\00:07:42.46 It's been such a blessing and an inspiration. 00:07:42.49\00:07:44.86 Okay, now Ana, you've done this many times, 00:07:44.89\00:07:47.63 tell me about one of the experiences 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.26 that you've had on the Sabbath sofa. 00:07:49.30\00:07:51.63 I think the most incredible thing about 00:07:51.67\00:07:53.90 this project is the relationships 00:07:53.94\00:07:56.50 that we've been able to maintain 00:07:56.54\00:07:58.01 with these people even after such a long time 00:07:58.04\00:08:00.98 and so many people write to us on Facebook 00:08:01.01\00:08:04.05 and share their experiences of the Sabbath 00:08:04.08\00:08:07.25 and that's the icing on the cake for us. 00:08:07.28\00:08:10.42 That's why we're doing this and it really makes us happy. 00:08:10.45\00:08:14.02 Well I remember, what was it last year 00:08:14.06\00:08:16.93 or the year before, summer up in Wales, 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.19 you invited me to trial the Sabbath sofa. 00:08:19.23\00:08:22.03 It was under much happier circumstances 00:08:22.06\00:08:24.07 where I wasn't freezing. 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.53 But I was just amazed at how many people would stop 00:08:25.57\00:08:29.10 and just sit down and just unload, 00:08:29.14\00:08:32.64 they would start talking about their experiences. 00:08:32.67\00:08:34.41 Now you have something you say to these people about 00:08:34.44\00:08:37.01 the Sabbath, what do you say? 00:08:37.05\00:08:38.55 Well, first of all the key to trying to engage people, 00:08:38.58\00:08:42.52 is well we connect and laugh and have a joke, 00:08:42.55\00:08:45.35 and after we kind of try and break down that barrier. 00:08:45.39\00:08:49.06 I ask people to image with me a world 00:08:49.09\00:08:52.43 where they can take 24 hours out of their busy schedules 00:08:52.46\00:08:55.83 from a Friday sunset to a Saturday sunset and rest. 00:08:55.86\00:09:00.14 I ask them to what does a day sound like to them? 00:09:00.17\00:09:04.47 I have to be honest and say 100 percent 00:09:04.51\00:09:07.11 of the responses I get on this sofa, 00:09:07.14\00:09:09.18 I kid you no lie, is that sounds amazing, 00:09:09.21\00:09:12.58 that's wonderful! 00:09:12.61\00:09:14.12 And people are just genuinely shocked about 00:09:14.15\00:09:15.98 a concept like this to the point that 00:09:16.02\00:09:17.49 they feel well actually that sounds amazing 00:09:17.52\00:09:20.39 but not that feasible. 00:09:20.42\00:09:22.39 And at that point I guess I neatly come in 00:09:22.42\00:09:26.26 and say well, its funny you should say that 00:09:26.29\00:09:28.36 because there happens to be 18 million of us 00:09:28.40\00:09:31.70 around the globe who do this regularly. 00:09:31.73\00:09:35.54 So it's an opportunity to inspire people about 00:09:35.57\00:09:37.61 the conversation of the Sabbath 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.47 and who we are in terms of our identity as well. 00:09:39.51\00:09:42.01 I remember from that one experience of people 00:09:42.04\00:09:45.75 would sit down they would visibly relax 00:09:45.78\00:09:48.18 and then when you'd say that to them 00:09:48.22\00:09:49.55 they would say oh, if only there were 24 hours. 00:09:49.58\00:09:53.69 Ana, what sort of things do you do beside the sofa 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.42 to like to back up what you're doing? 00:09:56.46\00:09:58.39 Ana? 00:09:58.43\00:09:59.76 We have a very strong social media 00:09:59.79\00:10:02.90 part of our project, so we-- 00:10:02.93\00:10:05.53 Sam and I do weekly challenges for people 00:10:05.57\00:10:09.07 where we do a Sabbath sofa challenge 00:10:09.10\00:10:10.74 and its different things. 00:10:10.77\00:10:12.61 We ask them different ways that 00:10:12.64\00:10:14.81 they can experience the Sabbath. 00:10:14.84\00:10:16.75 So either if its just enjoy the nature, 00:10:16.78\00:10:19.28 or call up someone you haven't spoken to in a long time. 00:10:19.31\00:10:23.35 It doesn't have to be something big, yeah. 00:10:23.39\00:10:25.92 And we also produce info graphics 00:10:25.95\00:10:28.29 that we post everyday on the Sabbath sofa 00:10:28.32\00:10:31.26 just to keep people engaged and remind them of the Sabbath. 00:10:31.29\00:10:34.83 Yeah, I saw those little cards that you have as well. 00:10:34.86\00:10:38.20 If you can dig that out so we can show the viewers. 00:10:38.23\00:10:40.54 Let's say. 00:10:40.57\00:10:42.27 That's the front and that's the back. 00:10:42.30\00:10:43.84 So it's got the links 00:10:43.87\00:10:45.81 for the social media and the website? 00:10:45.84\00:10:48.31 The beautiful thing about 00:10:48.34\00:10:50.71 these particular cards is they're simple. 00:10:50.75\00:10:53.68 Most people don't want to be lumbered 00:10:53.72\00:10:55.58 with a whole bunch of books and stacks and things. 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.55 It's very simple, you put it in their hands 00:10:58.59\00:11:00.42 and people are willing to go and check it out 00:11:00.46\00:11:02.29 and it's really quite, quite inspirational 00:11:02.32\00:11:05.26 how people respond to it. 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.26 Yeah, tell me another story of someone 00:11:07.30\00:11:10.00 who had the Sabbath sofa experience. 00:11:10.03\00:11:12.77 Okay. 00:11:12.80\00:11:15.20 All right, I'll tell you a story about a Jewish guy 00:11:15.24\00:11:18.44 who came and sat on the sofa. 00:11:18.47\00:11:21.11 We were in Soho, In London? 00:11:21.14\00:11:25.55 In London, yes, I rehearsed this speech 00:11:25.58\00:11:27.78 and obviously it changes per person 00:11:27.82\00:11:29.45 and I remember this guy came and sat down 00:11:29.48\00:11:32.32 and I was going through this speech 00:11:32.35\00:11:34.59 as I'm used to and I said, well, 00:11:34.62\00:11:37.43 have you ever heard of the Sabbath? 00:11:37.46\00:11:38.79 And he said, yes, I have. 00:11:38.83\00:11:40.43 And he sort of took me by surprise, 00:11:40.46\00:11:42.20 I wasn't ready for this. 00:11:42.23\00:11:43.93 So, you have? Yes, I'm a Jew. 00:11:43.97\00:11:48.10 Oh! Yeah, we invented this. 00:11:48.14\00:11:50.21 Right. 00:11:50.24\00:11:51.57 And that's almost exactly what happened 00:11:51.61\00:11:53.81 and so I had to change my whole spiel. 00:11:53.84\00:11:55.54 I actually sat back on the sofa, I rested 00:11:55.58\00:11:59.18 and I asked him to teach me about the Sabbath. 00:11:59.21\00:12:03.59 And I was absolutely blessed 00:12:03.62\00:12:05.95 when he broke down the Sabbath in such a way 00:12:05.99\00:12:08.29 where he basically said, the Sabbath is the time for God 00:12:08.32\00:12:11.89 and man to spend intentional time together 00:12:11.93\00:12:15.03 and that from the words from a Jew. 00:12:15.06\00:12:16.67 So that was one experience 00:12:16.70\00:12:18.03 where I got taught about the Sabbath, 00:12:18.07\00:12:19.80 which was pretty awesome. 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.57 Yeah. 00:12:21.60\00:12:23.04 What, have you had any negative responses? 00:12:23.07\00:12:26.84 Have I had any negative responses? 00:12:26.88\00:12:32.05 I'm struggling because I can't. 00:12:32.08\00:12:35.42 No, because it's a Sabbath blessing. 00:12:35.45\00:12:37.25 Yes. 00:12:37.29\00:12:38.69 The most negative response that 00:12:38.72\00:12:41.26 we've had would be the Sabbath is a great idea 00:12:41.29\00:12:45.13 but it's not feasible. 00:12:45.16\00:12:46.49 Right, it's not practical. 00:12:46.53\00:12:47.86 It's not practical but by our experiences 00:12:47.90\00:12:50.77 we show them that it is. 00:12:50.80\00:12:52.53 So, that's about as negative as it gets. 00:12:52.57\00:12:56.24 Because it's a positive experience. 00:12:56.27\00:12:58.61 Ana and Sam, thank you so much 00:12:58.64\00:13:00.58 for sharing with us about the Sabbath sofa. 00:13:00.61\00:13:02.41 Thank you.
