Welcome back, 00:00:04.85\00:00:05.92 within the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:00:05.95\00:00:08.32 the 13th Sabbath Offering has iconic status. 00:00:08.35\00:00:12.26 For many, many years, 00:00:12.29\00:00:13.81 Adventists have been giving generously 00:00:13.84\00:00:15.83 to 13th Sabbath Offerings. 00:00:15.86\00:00:17.92 These are collected, as the name suggests, 00:00:17.95\00:00:20.15 every 13th Sabbath, at the end of each quarter of the year. 00:00:20.18\00:00:24.40 And these offerings are given 00:00:24.43\00:00:25.93 for very specific projects around the world. 00:00:25.96\00:00:29.65 It could be to start a new school or a new hospital, 00:00:29.68\00:00:32.82 to help with community outreach, 00:00:32.85\00:00:34.65 various special projects 00:00:34.68\00:00:36.69 that get extra funding to help them do their work. 00:00:36.72\00:00:40.64 Your offerings make a difference 00:00:40.67\00:00:42.54 in the lives of thousands of people around the world. 00:00:42.57\00:00:46.13 Coming up next, let's see how 13th Sabbath Offerings 00:00:46.16\00:00:49.34 will be making a difference in Taiwan 00:00:49.37\00:00:51.60 as three new urban centers of influence are established. 00:00:51.63\00:00:56.18 In Taiwan, a large group of friends 00:00:59.23\00:01:01.34 is meeting at a local Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:01.37\00:01:04.67 Not all of these friends are Adventist members, 00:01:04.70\00:01:07.26 but all feel welcome to attend. 00:01:07.29\00:01:10.02 It has become known as the All Generations Center. 00:01:10.05\00:01:13.84 This group is made up 00:01:13.87\00:01:14.90 of elderly members of the community. 00:01:14.93\00:01:17.22 They meet together as part of a regular program 00:01:17.25\00:01:19.88 run by the church. 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.40 This program has been active for almost 10 years now. 00:01:21.43\00:01:25.03 The Taiwanese government recognizes what they do 00:01:25.06\00:01:27.68 and supports their programs. 00:01:27.71\00:01:29.96 Pastor Tom is in charge of running the program 00:01:29.99\00:01:32.34 and planning the activities. 00:01:32.37\00:01:34.58 Many lonely, old people. 00:01:34.61\00:01:38.20 They don't have nobody take care of them. 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.18 So the government needs the church 00:01:41.21\00:01:43.86 to serve, to help, to support them. 00:01:43.89\00:01:47.62 Many of those who come don't have family in the area. 00:01:47.65\00:01:50.58 They don't have people to help take care of them. 00:01:50.61\00:01:52.63 So you can imagine their excitement 00:01:52.66\00:01:54.47 when they get together and socialize. 00:01:54.50\00:01:56.79 The church provides a healthy lunch for the group. 00:01:56.82\00:01:59.37 Pastor Tom makes sure to jump in his car 00:01:59.40\00:02:01.66 to visit the homes of those 00:02:01.69\00:02:03.01 who are not physically able to attend. 00:02:03.04\00:02:05.74 He spends some time at their homes, 00:02:09.58\00:02:11.45 hand delivers meals, and prays with them. 00:02:11.48\00:02:14.36 Aside from lunch, the group also enjoys exercising, 00:02:14.39\00:02:18.02 blood pressure checks, crafts, and music. 00:02:18.05\00:02:21.28 This center of influence has bridged a gap 00:02:29.08\00:02:31.28 to allow people to attend church on Sabbath. 00:02:31.31\00:02:33.98 Before this program began, 00:02:34.01\00:02:35.93 community members were not sure what to think about Adventists. 00:02:35.96\00:02:39.76 They would not come to my church, never. 00:02:39.79\00:02:44.27 But when we started this service, 00:02:44.30\00:02:46.64 the All Generations Center, they came. 00:02:46.67\00:02:50.99 Easily, because we took care of them. 00:02:51.02\00:02:57.86 Through this kind of service they will open their mind 00:02:57.89\00:03:01.68 and make friends with us. 00:03:01.71\00:03:03.93 Through this ministry, people are getting to know 00:03:03.96\00:03:06.25 Jesus and are happier with their lives. 00:03:06.28\00:03:09.49 Throughout Taiwan the Adventist church 00:03:20.79\00:03:22.76 has established Centers of Influence 00:03:22.79\00:03:24.97 to meet people's needs. 00:03:25.00\00:03:26.36 In this community, 00:03:26.39\00:03:27.49 it meant creating the All Generations Center. 00:03:27.52\00:03:30.59 In other communities, education is a challenge. 00:03:35.04\00:03:38.11 Yulin Chong attended this after-school program 00:03:38.14\00:03:41.45 run by the Adventist Church. 00:03:41.48\00:03:43.69 The program helps tutor kids 00:03:43.72\00:03:45.68 who may need help and direction. 00:03:45.71\00:03:48.72 Yulin struggled in school and had a difficult home life. 00:03:48.75\00:03:52.54 He faced a lot of trouble in his earlier years 00:03:52.57\00:03:55.26 and it caused a lot of confusion 00:03:55.29\00:03:56.90 of what to do with his life. 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.88 After attending the after-school program, 00:03:58.91\00:04:01.24 Yulin learned about Jesus and found purpose in his life. 00:04:01.27\00:04:05.13 Now, he is a tutor and helps kids 00:04:05.16\00:04:07.12 who were once in his position. 00:04:07.15\00:04:09.45 People all over the world are in need. 00:04:09.48\00:04:12.24 Each community has different needs. 00:04:12.27\00:04:14.36 Centers of Influence around the world 00:04:14.39\00:04:16.23 are helping touch lives in their communities. 00:04:16.26\00:04:18.74 A portion of your mission offerings will help support 00:04:18.77\00:04:21.39 Centers of Influence in Taiwan. 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.94 Please pray for these projects. 00:04:23.97\00:04:26.33 Pray that they may grow 00:04:26.36\00:04:27.62 and continue to be a light in this world. 00:04:27.65\00:04:30.57 My guest is Dr. Justus Devadas 00:04:30.60\00:04:32.63 who is the vice chancellor of Spicer Adventist University. 00:04:32.66\00:04:36.89 Doctor, thank you so much for joining us. 00:04:36.92\00:04:38.72 Thank you very much. 00:04:38.75\00:04:39.93 And what an amazing time 00:04:39.96\00:04:41.90 this is, to celebrate 100 years. 00:04:41.93\00:04:43.52 Yeah, indeed, we're on top of the world. 00:04:43.55\00:04:46.93 Now, as you look at past-- at the past 100 years, 00:04:46.96\00:04:50.91 obviously you don't remember it all, 00:04:50.94\00:04:52.40 but what would you say are the major contributions 00:04:52.43\00:04:55.02 that Spicer has made here in India? 00:04:55.05\00:04:58.07 Well, till, say about 15 years back, 00:04:58.10\00:05:02.77 Spicer was the only degree giving in college 00:05:02.80\00:05:06.06 of the Adventist Church in the entire division. 00:05:06.09\00:05:09.19 Spicer was the only college. Okay. 00:05:09.22\00:05:11.26 So if you look at the work force, 00:05:11.29\00:05:14.25 probably the highest percentage came out of Spicer. 00:05:14.28\00:05:19.67 Whether it's a division president, 00:05:19.70\00:05:21.51 or a unions, or conference presidents, 00:05:21.54\00:05:23.91 most of them who had studied at Spicer 00:05:23.94\00:05:26.91 and teachers, or accountants, anything. 00:05:26.94\00:05:29.78 That was still about 15 years back. 00:05:29.81\00:05:32.25 So it's basically trained workers 00:05:32.28\00:05:34.63 for the Adventist Church. 00:05:34.66\00:05:35.95 Yes, not only for India, 00:05:35.98\00:05:37.65 we have had students from foreign countries. 00:05:37.68\00:05:42.08 But from the time the college came into being, 00:05:42.11\00:05:44.45 way back in 1915, when it moved here in 1942, 00:05:44.48\00:05:48.59 we were the only institution in the city of Pune, 00:05:48.62\00:05:50.62 who had foreign students studying here. 00:05:50.65\00:05:53.89 And then we produced ambassadors 00:05:53.92\00:05:56.31 from different countries, 00:05:56.34\00:05:58.41 one of the GC vice president is Spicer graduate, Jeffrey. 00:05:58.44\00:06:01.83 You know, and there are many more. 00:06:01.86\00:06:05.11 Besides, the Spicer made a distinct contribution 00:06:05.14\00:06:08.60 to the city of Pune 00:06:08.63\00:06:10.42 by its very existence in this city of the culture 00:06:10.45\00:06:13.68 we've produced here. 00:06:13.71\00:06:14.74 You know, we started several industries in Spicer 00:06:14.77\00:06:18.62 which was never heard of. 00:06:18.65\00:06:20.14 We also so first bakery in this city, 00:06:20.17\00:06:22.74 we were also the first to major agricultural farm, 00:06:22.77\00:06:26.72 modern farm in this region. 00:06:26.75\00:06:29.57 We used to educate farmers from the local areas on modern 00:06:29.60\00:06:34.07 and advanced kind of farming. 00:06:34.10\00:06:36.90 So it's had its own role to play in Pune, 00:06:36.93\00:06:43.16 in Maharashtra, in India. 00:06:43.19\00:06:44.90 Because our student graduates 00:06:44.93\00:06:46.30 went and started hunts for schools. 00:06:46.33\00:06:48.25 So that became you know, something. 00:06:48.28\00:06:50.76 Spicer is a tremendous place. 00:06:50.79\00:06:52.63 So you're training teachers as well. 00:06:52.66\00:06:54.41 Oh, yeah. 00:06:54.44\00:06:55.57 So what is the philosophy that guides this school? 00:06:55.60\00:07:00.05 Well, the Adventist philosophy of education, 00:07:00.08\00:07:02.92 we are mission oriented people. 00:07:02.95\00:07:04.79 Now the college was started for-- 00:07:04.82\00:07:06.82 to produce workers for the church 00:07:06.85\00:07:10.59 and also, you know, people to find jobs elsewhere. 00:07:10.62\00:07:16.91 But, you know, the Indian education system 00:07:16.94\00:07:19.76 is British based education system. 00:07:19.79\00:07:21.35 Very structured, we cannot do this way that way. 00:07:21.38\00:07:24.97 Probably for years we were the only liberal arts 00:07:25.00\00:07:27.80 educational institutions in this country. 00:07:27.83\00:07:32.23 You know, and then we introduced 00:07:32.26\00:07:36.37 work education program, students could ask to work. 00:07:36.40\00:07:40.44 We paid them but then a part of the academic program 00:07:40.47\00:07:43.23 while probably American collages 00:07:43.26\00:07:44.90 have given up, we still do that. 00:07:44.93\00:07:46.35 You know, even we've put that 00:07:46.38\00:07:47.79 as an innovative program in the University Charter, 00:07:47.82\00:07:51.81 that everyone has to work, you know. 00:07:51.84\00:07:53.55 So it's based on Sister White's philosophy of education 00:07:53.58\00:07:57.94 to the fullest, you know. 00:07:57.97\00:08:00.34 A holistic education. Oh, yes, yes. 00:08:00.37\00:08:02.50 Now the name Spicer, coming of course from Pastor Spicer, 00:08:02.53\00:08:06.58 how does that-- how do you look on that name? 00:08:06.61\00:08:10.01 Well, you know, Elder Spicer never worked at Spicer College. 00:08:10.04\00:08:14.31 He worked at the division 00:08:14.34\00:08:15.88 and he was one of those pioneers, 00:08:15.91\00:08:18.53 when the first Adventist school 00:08:18.56\00:08:20.58 was established in India, in Karmatar, 00:08:20.61\00:08:24.02 where several of our missionaries 00:08:24.05\00:08:27.15 were even killed due to smallpox, 00:08:27.18\00:08:30.44 but he was there. 00:08:30.47\00:08:31.50 He did not run, he didn't run away, 00:08:31.53\00:08:33.18 he stayed back and said look, the waves maybe defeated 00:08:33.21\00:08:38.11 but the current will win, current of God will win. 00:08:38.14\00:08:40.92 You know, that's how-- And then his statements rather say, 00:08:40.95\00:08:43.61 there is no position or authority in the church, 00:08:43.64\00:08:45.79 there are positions of only of service. 00:08:45.82\00:08:47.89 You know, this is what we hear of him-- he-- you will see 00:08:47.92\00:08:52.33 hundreds of children named Spicer even today. 00:08:52.36\00:08:54.76 Is that right? 00:08:54.79\00:08:56.66 You know, it was the name 00:08:56.69\00:08:58.21 Spicer was given in respect of him 00:08:58.24\00:09:00.95 but then that name is synonymous 00:09:00.98\00:09:03.14 with this Christian institution 00:09:03.17\00:09:04.82 in the city of Pune, Maharashtra in India. 00:09:04.85\00:09:07.90 Christians, all denominations know about Spicer. 00:09:07.93\00:09:10.91 Yes. We have a very special place. 00:09:10.94\00:09:14.50 So I, in fact, I tried to get somebody from the Spicer family 00:09:14.53\00:09:18.17 to come for the centennial, couldn't make it, you know. 00:09:18.20\00:09:21.51 But otherwise that name is very special to us. 00:09:21.54\00:09:23.92 Even though we, from the college 00:09:23.95\00:09:25.95 we went to, an university, 00:09:25.98\00:09:28.39 they said we will keep that name 00:09:28.42\00:09:29.97 but bring the name Adventist in between, 00:09:30.00\00:09:32.07 so it is Spicer Adventist University. 00:09:32.10\00:09:34.24 Okay, and I said it wrong before, I said, 00:09:34.27\00:09:35.85 Spicer Memorial, it's Spicer Adventist. 00:09:35.88\00:09:37.54 Yeah, given out the Memorial and brought Adventist. 00:09:37.57\00:09:39.25 Because I, for one, want to know 00:09:39.28\00:09:41.91 people to know that this is a Adventist institution. 00:09:41.94\00:09:45.27 Yes, yeah. 00:09:45.30\00:09:46.33 We'll stand for Adventist principles whatever may come. 00:09:46.36\00:09:50.65 It doesn't bother whether we are big or small 00:09:50.68\00:09:53.41 but we'll stand for the Adventist 00:09:53.44\00:09:54.56 philosophy of education. 00:09:54.59\00:09:55.66 So I'm totally committed for that. 00:09:55.69\00:09:57.39 Wonderful. 00:09:57.42\00:09:58.45 As you look to the future, 00:09:58.48\00:10:00.36 Dr. Devadas, what would be your hope 00:10:00.39\00:10:02.79 that this school will continue to contribute? 00:10:02.82\00:10:08.38 Dr. Gary Krause, you know, 00:10:08.41\00:10:09.69 the Adventist kids in India had suffered for years 00:10:09.72\00:10:14.40 and years for want of an Adventist university 00:10:14.43\00:10:17.60 because they go to the secular universities, 00:10:17.63\00:10:20.59 they find difficult time to manage with the Sabbath issues, 00:10:20.62\00:10:24.64 they move with the different group of people, 00:10:24.67\00:10:26.87 their ethos change. 00:10:26.90\00:10:28.77 Now with our university, we can only grow. 00:10:28.80\00:10:31.93 Yes. We can only grow. 00:10:31.96\00:10:33.04 We look forward, you know, 00:10:33.07\00:10:35.14 the Southern Asia has 1.7 million membership 00:10:35.17\00:10:38.21 and then you know, that many youngsters are there. 00:10:38.24\00:10:40.35 India has the highest population 00:10:40.38\00:10:42.85 which is less than 25 years old. 00:10:42.88\00:10:44.86 They all Seventh-day Adventists also, we want them to come. 00:10:44.89\00:10:47.82 We want the education to be provided. 00:10:47.85\00:10:49.96 Then, for international students, 00:10:49.99\00:10:52.60 Spicer will still provide top class Adventist education 00:10:52.63\00:10:56.95 at an affordable price. 00:10:56.98\00:10:58.45 Wonderful. Up next we travel to Japan. 00:10:58.48\00:11:02.10 When you think of Japan, you might imagine the busy, 00:11:10.63\00:11:13.27 crowded streets of Tokyo. 00:11:13.30\00:11:15.05 Or your mind might wander off 00:11:15.08\00:11:16.61 to scenes of beautiful landscapes. 00:11:16.64\00:11:19.21 There is not only diversity in Japan's lifestyle and terrain 00:11:19.24\00:11:22.93 but also in the people who live here. 00:11:22.96\00:11:25.24 Over the years, many South Americans have settled 00:11:25.27\00:11:28.16 into towns and cities throughout Japan. 00:11:28.19\00:11:31.98 Shizuoka is famous for its views of Mount Fuji. 00:11:32.01\00:11:35.48 It has a humid, sub-tropical climate. 00:11:35.51\00:11:38.36 On this Sabbath morning, the rain is holding off 00:11:38.39\00:11:40.96 allowing this congregation to meet 00:11:40.99\00:11:42.81 beside a peaceful lake outside the city. 00:11:42.84\00:11:45.96 This is a unique group in Japan. 00:11:48.75\00:11:50.93 The members of this church come from South America 00:11:50.96\00:11:53.63 and most from Brazil. 00:11:53.66\00:11:55.49 Many of them have lived here for years 00:11:55.52\00:11:57.63 and this is their home. 00:11:57.66\00:11:59.17 They come to work, have a different quality of life, 00:11:59.20\00:12:02.27 and sometime just to have a new beginning. 00:12:02.30\00:12:05.81 Since there is such a large population 00:12:05.84\00:12:07.60 of Brazilians in this area, 00:12:07.63\00:12:09.31 they have formed their own church family. 00:12:09.34\00:12:11.46 The churches atmosphere is friendly and kind 00:12:11.49\00:12:14.69 and all are welcome. 00:12:14.72\00:12:17.51 Brazilians smile a lot. 00:12:17.54\00:12:19.98 They like to hug and they're very friendly. 00:12:20.01\00:12:23.27 They like to make friends 00:12:23.30\00:12:24.68 and they also expect you to come back again. 00:12:24.71\00:12:27.84 Each Sabbath begins with a Sabbath School lesson. 00:12:27.87\00:12:30.82 If you don't speak Portuguese there is still a place for you. 00:12:30.85\00:12:34.02 The classes are divided into Portuguese, Japanese, 00:12:34.05\00:12:37.21 and English speaking groups. 00:12:37.24\00:12:38.93 In general, Japan is a challenging area 00:12:38.96\00:12:41.37 for the gospel to spread. 00:12:41.40\00:12:43.63 Japan is a highly developed country. 00:12:43.66\00:12:47.93 But because of secularism and materialism, 00:12:47.96\00:12:50.88 you know, all these things will hinder people, 00:12:50.91\00:12:55.31 you know, to receive the gospel message, you see. 00:12:55.34\00:12:59.27 You can notice a strong presence 00:12:59.30\00:13:00.98 of these concepts in the cities. 00:13:01.01\00:13:03.07 People are busy and have little time for religion. 00:13:03.10\00:13:06.05 This busy lifestyle even rubs off 00:13:06.08\00:13:07.98 on the Brazilian migrant workers. 00:13:08.01\00:13:10.17 For the church members, 00:13:10.20\00:13:11.30 the time to rest on Sabbath is highly valued. 00:13:11.33\00:13:15.44 Marina is originally from Brazil. 00:13:24.87\00:13:27.44 When she moved to Japan with her husband, 00:13:27.47\00:13:29.40 they were not Adventists. 00:13:29.43\00:13:30.97 Her husband wanted to find a new church in Japan. 00:13:31.00\00:13:33.37 So he started looking and found an Adventist church. 00:13:33.40\00:13:36.12 Marina was against the idea of visiting. 00:13:36.15\00:13:39.16 The first time she went to church, 00:13:39.19\00:13:41.05 she deliberately wore outrageous outfits 00:13:41.08\00:13:43.40 to embarrass him and maybe stop him from going. 00:13:43.43\00:13:46.13 Her husband told her that as long 00:13:46.16\00:13:47.69 as she comes to church it's okay. 00:13:47.72\00:13:50.30 Marina began to feel something change 00:13:50.33\00:13:52.22 and before long, she actually wanted to attend. 00:13:52.25\00:13:55.91 She listened to the messages 00:13:55.94\00:13:57.36 and eventually Marina and her husband were baptized. 00:13:57.39\00:14:00.78 Members like Marina have turned their lives 00:14:00.81\00:14:03.13 around to serve Jesus. 00:14:03.16\00:14:05.56 The mission challenge can be seen around the world 00:14:08.79\00:14:11.62 and especially in places like the 10/40 window. 00:14:11.65\00:14:14.93 Churches like this one in Japan have a great responsibility 00:14:14.96\00:14:18.05 to draw people closer to Jesus. 00:14:18.08\00:14:20.84 A portion of your mission offerings 00:14:20.87\00:14:22.71 will support a multicultural center 00:14:22.74\00:14:24.91 where international members can come together 00:14:24.94\00:14:27.56 and lives can be touched by Jesus. 00:14:27.59\00:14:30.79 Please pray for this church 00:14:30.82\00:14:32.27 and other international churches around the world.
