Spicer Memorial University, 00:00:03.65\00:00:06.00 celebrating 100 years of making a difference in India. 00:00:06.03\00:00:10.09 That and much more coming up next 00:00:10.12\00:00:12.34 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:12.37\00:00:14.54 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:18.84\00:00:21.29 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:21.32\00:00:24.29 He gave us a mission. 00:00:24.32\00:00:26.96 Jesus said, "Go. 00:00:26.99\00:00:29.47 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:29.50\00:00:34.33 This is our mission. 00:00:34.36\00:00:36.36 This is our 'Global Mission.'" 00:00:36.39\00:00:39.28 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:49.50\00:00:51.65 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:51.68\00:00:52.98 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:53.01\00:00:54.51 from the beautiful campus of Spicer Adventist University, 00:00:54.54\00:00:58.83 here in Pune, India. 00:00:58.86\00:01:00.68 Spicer is celebrating 100 years of existence. 00:01:00.71\00:01:04.80 You know, going back some time ago, 00:01:04.83\00:01:06.62 when the first pioneers is came to India, 00:01:06.65\00:01:09.47 they had a vision for Adventist education. 00:01:09.50\00:01:12.23 They wanted to see schools established 00:01:12.26\00:01:14.21 that would help restore the image of God 00:01:14.24\00:01:16.53 in men and women around this country. 00:01:16.56\00:01:19.31 And so in 1895, inspired by this vision, 00:01:19.34\00:01:22.26 by this philosophy, two young Adventist women 00:01:22.29\00:01:25.53 came to Calcutta and within 20 years of their arrival, 00:01:25.56\00:01:29.83 a network of Adventist schools 00:01:29.86\00:01:32.08 were stretching from the Himalayas in the north, 00:01:32.11\00:01:34.66 all the way to south India. 00:01:34.69\00:01:36.46 The first class held on the campus 00:01:36.49\00:01:38.71 of what is today known as Spicer Adventist University 00:01:38.74\00:01:42.34 was July 12, 1915. 00:01:42.37\00:01:45.95 And back then, a whole range of different courses 00:01:45.98\00:01:48.65 were offered, carpentry, agriculture, 00:01:48.68\00:01:52.25 even a program in poultry. 00:01:52.28\00:01:55.12 And students were trained in very practical skills 00:01:55.15\00:01:58.66 to reach out into their communities. 00:01:58.69\00:02:01.22 The name of course of the college, 00:02:01.25\00:02:03.05 now the university, came from Pastor W. A. Spicer, 00:02:03.08\00:02:07.47 a Pioneer Adventist Missionary who today, 00:02:07.50\00:02:10.40 his memory is still loved because of his self-sacrifice 00:02:10.43\00:02:14.46 and his commitment to the people of this country. 00:02:14.49\00:02:17.57 On today's program we're going to be seeing 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.65 mission all over the world. 00:02:19.68\00:02:20.83 We're going to be looking at 13th Sabbath, 00:02:20.86\00:02:22.74 offering projects in Northern Asia. 00:02:22.77\00:02:25.45 But first up, let's travel to the country of Korea. 00:02:25.48\00:02:28.62 South Korea is often referred 00:02:30.47\00:02:32.32 to as the land of the morning calm. 00:02:32.35\00:02:35.17 It has preserved a rich 00:02:35.20\00:02:36.60 and vibrant culture throughout the years. 00:02:36.63\00:02:39.09 Many Koreans have great pride 00:02:39.12\00:02:40.82 and appreciation for their country. 00:02:40.85\00:02:43.62 In a small suburban community, 00:02:43.65\00:02:45.50 a group of young people 00:02:45.53\00:02:46.58 are getting their traditional costumes 00:02:46.61\00:02:48.38 and instruments ready to go to their town's central park 00:02:48.41\00:02:51.66 and put on a show. 00:02:51.69\00:02:53.24 They've been practicing for weeks 00:03:00.25\00:03:02.13 and the community recognizes their beat. 00:03:02.16\00:03:04.46 But who are they? 00:03:04.49\00:03:05.99 Now, down south in Naju city 00:03:06.02\00:03:09.04 there is a very much unique Church. 00:03:09.07\00:03:10.97 All the Church members are youth members. 00:03:11.00\00:03:13.70 Middle school students and high school students, 00:03:13.73\00:03:15.51 except the pastor and his wife. 00:03:15.54\00:03:18.31 This youth church is run by the youth and for the youth. 00:03:18.34\00:03:22.13 They've built a solid group of members 00:03:22.16\00:03:23.90 who are involved in all the church's activities. 00:03:23.93\00:03:26.53 The traditional costumes and instruments 00:03:26.56\00:03:28.63 are just one of their many activities 00:03:28.66\00:03:30.70 to greet the community. 00:03:30.73\00:03:32.37 But this church didn't always work this way. 00:03:32.40\00:03:35.09 Pastor Shin used to be a deacon in a church. 00:03:37.43\00:03:40.74 His oldest daughter, Bo Hwa was a middle school student, 00:03:40.77\00:03:44.33 there was no one there her age in the church 00:03:44.36\00:03:46.67 and she was lonely. 00:03:46.70\00:03:47.93 So Bo Hwa's mother knew she had to find friends 00:03:47.96\00:03:51.15 for her daughter in the church. 00:03:51.18\00:03:52.92 In the beginning, she didn't have enough funds 00:03:52.95\00:03:55.06 from the Church, they are poor, 00:03:55.09\00:03:56.30 she began to bake Korean style pancakes on the street. 00:03:56.33\00:04:00.47 And she gave it to the passers by and students. 00:04:00.50\00:04:04.59 So that way, she gathered a lot of students 00:04:04.62\00:04:08.70 and then as of now, 00:04:08.73\00:04:10.41 the church is baptizing around 20 young people every year. 00:04:10.44\00:04:17.32 Thanks to the mother's efforts and pancakes, 00:04:17.35\00:04:19.99 the youth congregation was growing. 00:04:20.02\00:04:22.51 As the Church grew, 00:04:22.54\00:04:23.86 Bo Hwa's father felt the call to join the ministry. 00:04:23.89\00:04:27.34 At that time, Bo Hwa's father was a deacon, 00:04:27.37\00:04:30.64 but he was feeling God's call to be a minister. 00:04:30.67\00:04:33.74 When he was 47 years old, 00:04:33.77\00:04:37.49 he went to the theological training. 00:04:37.52\00:04:40.70 And his old daughter followed him. 00:04:40.73\00:04:43.87 Eventually the youngest daughter followed. 00:04:43.90\00:04:47.07 Having three family members 00:04:47.10\00:04:48.50 in theology school was not cheap. 00:04:48.53\00:04:51.68 So one year the father was a senior, 00:04:51.71\00:04:55.03 and the first daughter was a sophomore, 00:04:55.06\00:04:58.24 the youngest daughter was a freshman. 00:04:58.27\00:05:00.25 Three of them were in the same classroom 00:05:00.28\00:05:03.16 and all the while his wife 00:05:03.19\00:05:04.87 was on the street to back the pancakes. 00:05:04.90\00:05:08.87 And she supported three of these students. 00:05:08.90\00:05:12.15 Her husband, first daughter, and second daughter. 00:05:12.18\00:05:15.29 Again, the mother came through by baking the Korean pancakes. 00:05:15.32\00:05:19.75 Even before I started, I prayed for a long time 00:05:22.50\00:05:26.01 and I read the Bible to get the knowledge. 00:05:26.04\00:05:28.74 When God made me successful in this ministry 00:05:28.77\00:05:31.52 I thought that it was the work of God. 00:05:31.55\00:05:34.14 At first, the community didn't know 00:05:34.17\00:05:35.91 what to think of this church. 00:05:35.94\00:05:37.64 But the youth decided to give to the community. 00:05:37.67\00:05:40.68 They visited the homes of the elderly. 00:05:40.71\00:05:43.17 They would talk with them, wash their dishes, 00:05:43.20\00:05:45.77 work in their gardens, and help in any way they could. 00:05:45.80\00:05:49.79 As a result of truly caring for their neighbors, 00:05:49.82\00:05:52.85 their reputation has transformed 00:05:52.88\00:05:55.00 to being loved by their community. 00:05:55.03\00:05:57.46 These students are very welcomed 00:05:59.63\00:06:01.41 by the elderly citizens around here. 00:06:01.44\00:06:03.95 These elderly citizens took them in 00:06:03.98\00:06:06.23 as their grandchildren. 00:06:06.26\00:06:08.47 On a typical Sabbath, 00:06:08.50\00:06:09.69 they will have a church service, 00:06:09.72\00:06:11.01 share a meal together, 00:06:11.04\00:06:12.45 and spend the whole afternoon together. 00:06:12.48\00:06:14.66 They are truly a church family. 00:06:14.69\00:06:18.92 It is a great joy of mine 00:06:18.95\00:06:20.59 to see them remaining in the faith 00:06:20.62\00:06:22.52 as they grow up and become successful citizens in society. 00:06:22.55\00:06:27.62 With all the growth and activity, 00:06:27.65\00:06:29.32 they have outgrown their humble building 00:06:29.35\00:06:31.51 and need more space to expand. 00:06:31.54\00:06:33.64 They want to train the youth 00:06:33.67\00:06:34.70 to effectively reach the community. 00:06:34.73\00:06:37.17 A portion of your mission offerings 00:06:37.20\00:06:39.04 will go toward building a mission institute 00:06:39.07\00:06:41.04 for the youth so they can be properly trained 00:06:41.07\00:06:43.58 to introduce their neighbors to Jesus. 00:06:43.61\00:06:46.74 Please pray for the members of this church. 00:06:46.77\00:06:49.30 Pray that this group will continue to grow 00:06:49.33\00:06:52.07 and more hearts are touched by Jesus. 00:06:52.10\00:06:56.05 My guest is Elder Ted Wilson 00:06:56.08\00:06:57.80 who is the president of the General Conference 00:06:57.83\00:06:59.61 of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:06:59.64\00:07:01.31 Thanks for joining us, Elder Wilson. 00:07:01.34\00:07:03.49 We're celebrating this weekend 00:07:03.52\00:07:04.87 100 years of education at Spicer, 00:07:04.90\00:07:07.92 now called Spicer Adventist University. 00:07:07.95\00:07:11.49 Why is education so important in a country like India? 00:07:11.52\00:07:15.53 Well, first of all, Spicer Memorial College, 00:07:15.56\00:07:19.41 which has now become Spicer Adventist University, 00:07:19.44\00:07:22.46 is one of those unique situations 00:07:22.49\00:07:26.39 where education is so important in the life of people 00:07:26.42\00:07:33.02 that this new status 00:07:33.05\00:07:34.84 is going to be an exceptional opportunity 00:07:34.87\00:07:38.14 for hundreds of Seventh-day Adventist students 00:07:38.17\00:07:41.11 to be able to get an education without any Sabbath problems. 00:07:41.14\00:07:46.52 Where as in the past, 00:07:46.55\00:07:48.20 people have gone to public universities in India 00:07:48.23\00:07:51.90 and have had to face 00:07:51.93\00:07:53.27 that challenge of classes six days a week 00:07:53.30\00:07:56.73 and different exams on Sabbath. 00:07:56.76\00:08:00.46 So this is going to be a wonderful opportunity 00:08:00.49\00:08:03.32 and to lay a foundation for working 00:08:03.35\00:08:06.29 in a very high tech IT setting with media. 00:08:06.32\00:08:12.67 India is becoming a very strong leader in that area. 00:08:12.70\00:08:17.07 But in terms of education itself; 00:08:17.10\00:08:18.99 I mean 100 years for Spicer, 00:08:19.02\00:08:22.85 I mean, obviously we ought to be in heaven by now. 00:08:22.88\00:08:26.39 We're celebrating the anniversary and it's great. 00:08:26.42\00:08:29.02 But education itself 00:08:29.05\00:08:30.98 and Seventh-day Adventist education in particular, 00:08:31.01\00:08:34.30 is one of the greatest factors 00:08:34.33\00:08:37.95 in why the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:08:37.98\00:08:39.73 has been able to achieve 00:08:39.76\00:08:41.84 such a strong evangelistic level of efficiency 00:08:41.87\00:08:47.02 in activity around the world. 00:08:47.05\00:08:49.17 Training people, helping them to see a vision, 00:08:49.20\00:08:52.30 understanding the foundation of all true education 00:08:52.33\00:08:56.34 which is a knowledge of God, 00:08:56.37\00:08:58.38 helping people to fully grasp the picture 00:08:58.41\00:09:02.54 that really education is not only a way 00:09:02.57\00:09:07.13 to a higher standard of living but it is really, 00:09:07.16\00:09:10.86 in the Adventist setting, 00:09:10.89\00:09:12.39 a key to our entire understanding 00:09:12.42\00:09:16.35 of how to reach out to people. 00:09:16.38\00:09:18.44 Now, how should a Seventh-day Adventist 00:09:18.47\00:09:21.36 educational institution differ from any other institution? 00:09:21.39\00:09:24.90 What are the key differences in Adventist education? 00:09:24.93\00:09:28.32 Well, essentially in the academic area 00:09:28.35\00:09:31.35 we should be no less, 00:09:31.38\00:09:34.25 in fact we should be better than any other institution 00:09:34.28\00:09:38.41 because the Lord has asked 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.89 that we study to show ourselves approved. 00:09:40.92\00:09:43.92 When it comes to the world view, 00:09:43.95\00:09:49.19 that's where Seventh-day Adventists differ. 00:09:49.22\00:09:51.66 Because we follow Christ's pattern 00:09:51.69\00:09:54.57 of trying to help people 00:09:54.60\00:09:57.27 physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. 00:09:57.30\00:10:00.15 And that entire component is built 00:10:00.18\00:10:02.90 into the Seventh-day Adventist educational package 00:10:02.93\00:10:06.65 in such an intrinsic way 00:10:06.68\00:10:08.73 that you can't really pull it apart 00:10:08.76\00:10:13.24 without then destroying what the real purpose 00:10:13.27\00:10:16.53 of Seventh-day Adventist education is. 00:10:16.56\00:10:18.52 So when a student comes out of that institution, 00:10:18.55\00:10:21.72 they have such a complete picture 00:10:21.75\00:10:25.88 as Christ did in His ministry, 00:10:25.91\00:10:29.03 that everything they do is tilted 00:10:29.06\00:10:32.22 and focused towards truly helping the person 00:10:32.25\00:10:36.03 that they're dealing with in whatever discipline, 00:10:36.06\00:10:38.23 whatever work, to find true meaning in life 00:10:38.26\00:10:42.20 and to find the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ. 00:10:42.23\00:10:45.95 So that's what makes the difference 00:10:45.98\00:10:48.51 and it's this overall understanding 00:10:48.54\00:10:51.56 and it's derived from an understanding of Scripture, 00:10:51.59\00:10:55.21 from the Spirit of Prophecy, 00:10:55.24\00:10:57.02 from an understanding of who we are as a people. 00:10:57.05\00:11:00.29 Yeah, so it's a Holistic emphasis, 00:11:00.32\00:11:03.19 which isn't just head knowledge, 00:11:03.22\00:11:05.30 it's affecting your spiritual life, 00:11:05.33\00:11:08.06 your physical life, 00:11:08.09\00:11:09.66 and it comes from Ellen White's writings. 00:11:09.69\00:11:11.24 Really, that's where is all started. 00:11:11.27\00:11:12.72 It does, and it affects 00:11:12.75\00:11:14.63 even your personal interrelationships 00:11:14.66\00:11:17.17 with your family, with how you view life, 00:11:17.20\00:11:21.64 with the purpose of the beautiful education 00:11:21.67\00:11:25.59 you've received, and the skills and talents 00:11:25.62\00:11:28.30 that God has provided for you. 00:11:28.33\00:11:30.76 That they are not just to be used for yourself 00:11:30.79\00:11:32.81 but to be used in service to others 00:11:32.84\00:11:34.98 and pointing people to Jesus' soon coming. 00:11:35.01\00:11:37.34 Wonderful. 00:11:37.37\00:11:38.43 Elder Wilson, thank you so much for joining us. 00:11:38.46\00:11:40.94 And right after this break, 00:11:40.97\00:11:42.71 we'll be talking with the vice chancellor 00:11:42.74\00:11:44.82 of Spicer Adventist University. 00:11:44.85\00:11:47.10
