Fourteen million people live in the London Metropolitan Area 00:00:11.42\00:00:15.33 and reportedly some 300 languages are spoken here, 00:00:15.36\00:00:18.89 making it perhaps the world's most international city. 00:00:18.92\00:00:22.49 "Mission in London" and much more coming up next. 00:00:22.52\00:00:25.52 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:29.69\00:00:32.30 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:32.33\00:00:35.16 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, "Go. 00:00:35.19\00:00:40.44 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love." 00:00:40.47\00:00:45.32 This is our mission. 00:00:45.35\00:00:47.37 This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:47.40\00:00:52.92 Hello and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:55.71\00:00:58.17 Taking you around the world to see mission in action, 00:00:58.20\00:01:01.52 today's program is coming to you from London, England, 00:01:01.55\00:01:04.22 full of remarkable landmarks such as Buckingham Palace. 00:01:04.25\00:01:08.37 On today's program, we'll take you 360 degrees 00:01:08.40\00:01:11.32 around the world. 00:01:11.35\00:01:12.39 First up, let's travel to South Sudan, 00:01:12.42\00:01:14.83 and meet a couple 00:01:14.86\00:01:16.00 who are educating young minds for eternity. 00:01:16.03\00:01:19.10 Eyira Adventist Vocational Academy 00:01:27.73\00:01:29.67 is a struggling Seventh-day Adventist school 00:01:29.70\00:01:31.99 located in Southern Sudan. 00:01:32.02\00:01:34.66 It was in 1996 they opened its doors 00:01:34.69\00:01:37.35 and they have been holding the school 00:01:37.38\00:01:43.08 each year since then, even though 00:01:43.11\00:01:45.71 the first eight or nine years were during war. 00:01:45.74\00:01:49.48 Sudanese are flowing to Uganda, to Kenya, 00:01:49.51\00:01:51.91 to look for education opportunities 00:01:51.94\00:01:53.28 in larger numbers. 00:01:53.31\00:01:54.75 That's why I say this so, 00:01:54.78\00:01:57.08 if there is somebody outside there 00:01:57.11\00:01:59.29 who wants to come in here, 00:01:59.32\00:02:01.28 bringing education opportunities 00:02:01.31\00:02:03.08 I think is answering the true need 00:02:03.11\00:02:05.47 of the Sudanese people. 00:02:05.50\00:02:12.91 Lowell and Neria Jenks are heading to Southern Sudan 00:02:12.94\00:02:15.62 to start a vocational program for the school. 00:02:15.65\00:02:18.12 I think that they realize that you know, 00:02:18.15\00:02:20.33 we're like fish out of water, coming all the way over here. 00:02:20.36\00:02:24.06 And they're apparently doing 00:02:24.09\00:02:26.50 what they can to make us fit in, 00:02:26.53\00:02:28.89 feel comfortable and to make it home for us. 00:02:28.92\00:02:34.92 This is brother Lowell Jenks. 00:02:40.82\00:02:43.95 Lowell will be heading up 00:02:43.98\00:02:45.43 the new vocational section of EAVA, 00:02:45.46\00:02:49.10 and his wife Neria who will be librarian 00:02:49.13\00:02:52.75 and giving some assistance in the office as well. 00:02:52.78\00:02:56.17 You've made us feel welcome. 00:03:00.98\00:03:02.75 We're calling this home. 00:03:02.78\00:03:05.23 Thank you. 00:03:05.26\00:03:09.86 You can see, green trees and flowers, pretty full. 00:03:20.80\00:03:25.34 We were originally brought in here 00:03:25.37\00:03:26.99 to initiate a vocational program. 00:03:27.02\00:03:30.56 The name of this school 00:03:30.59\00:03:32.11 is Eyira Adventist Vocational Academy. 00:03:32.14\00:03:35.36 And other than teaching agriculture to the students, 00:03:35.39\00:03:39.84 nothing was being done. 00:03:39.87\00:03:41.29 And I don't know how many years 00:03:41.32\00:03:42.42 it had been since a more formal type 00:03:42.45\00:03:44.56 of a vocational program was going on. 00:03:44.59\00:03:47.78 But they wanted to come in 00:03:47.81\00:03:50.53 and make the part of the vocation 00:03:50.56\00:03:53.21 in the school's name more of a reality. 00:03:53.24\00:03:56.59 With my English, I've got to say things 00:03:56.62\00:03:59.49 three to four or five times sometimes 00:03:59.52\00:04:01.39 before they really grasp what I'm saying. 00:04:01.42\00:04:03.47 So we put a whole outline on the board, 00:04:03.50\00:04:06.01 we explain everything two or three times 00:04:06.04\00:04:08.08 and I try to have some kind of a training DVD or video 00:04:08.11\00:04:10.93 that they can also look at 00:04:10.96\00:04:12.34 because they pick up additional things 00:04:12.37\00:04:13.61 that I'm trying to give them. 00:04:13.64\00:04:14.70 To me, living in South Sudan 00:04:21.71\00:04:23.26 is like going many years back in Belize, 00:04:23.29\00:04:27.34 because when I was growing up, we did everything manually, 00:04:27.37\00:04:32.71 you know, electricity, we didn't have electricity. 00:04:32.74\00:04:37.49 So we go to bed when the sun goes down and rise 00:04:37.52\00:04:41.59 when the sun came up 00:04:41.62\00:04:42.67 and basically that's what we do here. 00:04:42.70\00:04:45.64 Dishes, breakfast and lunch together, 00:04:45.67\00:04:47.73 so we don't use much water. 00:04:47.76\00:04:50.54 You know, we live in a nice house compared to 00:04:57.07\00:05:00.13 what the average Sudanese lives in. 00:05:00.16\00:05:02.70 It was built by somebody from ADRA, 00:05:02.73\00:05:05.11 and it's a brick masonry house 00:05:05.14\00:05:07.66 and we do have power of sorts. 00:05:07.69\00:05:09.86 I think there's one outlet in each room. 00:05:09.89\00:05:12.44 We get power about three hours a night 00:05:12.47\00:05:14.01 from 7:30 to 10:30. 00:05:14.04\00:05:15.36 For somebody like me who goes to bed at 8:30 00:05:15.39\00:05:17.14 I don't always get to advantage myself of it. 00:05:17.17\00:05:18.98 Anyhow, water we catch most of our water 00:05:19.01\00:05:23.69 throughout the year off of the roof, gutters 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.93 and a couple of plastic cisterns. 00:05:25.96\00:05:28.61 Dry months if we're here during the dry months 00:05:28.64\00:05:31.18 we hire a young lady to carry water about a mile 00:05:31.21\00:05:34.29 from the borehole. 00:05:34.32\00:05:35.61 As far as transportation, somebody, 00:05:35.64\00:05:38.23 a former missionary left me a motorcycle. 00:05:38.26\00:05:41.58 And I do go around some on that. 00:05:41.61\00:05:43.30 Although, limited during the rainy season 00:05:43.33\00:05:45.26 because I-- the road gets very slippery. 00:05:45.29\00:05:47.84 The school has a Land Cruiser 00:05:47.87\00:05:50.65 and if we have to we go to town 00:05:50.68\00:05:54.09 but otherwise there are weeks at a time 00:05:54.12\00:05:56.68 that we never, pretty much leave the school. 00:05:56.71\00:05:58.58 My guest is Mfakazi who is planting 00:06:07.45\00:06:10.18 a church here in London. 00:06:10.21\00:06:11.96 Thanks for joining us. Thank you. 00:06:11.99\00:06:13.88 And appreciate the warm welcome here today. 00:06:13.91\00:06:16.05 Mfakazi, you've already planted a church in London. 00:06:16.08\00:06:19.71 How did that start? Tell me the story. 00:06:19.74\00:06:22.61 Well, I was a member of my church 00:06:22.64\00:06:28.35 in East London there and one of my friends, 00:06:28.38\00:06:32.35 we started talking about being more involved 00:06:32.38\00:06:36.80 and really making a greater impact 00:06:36.83\00:06:40.93 with what we have as Adventists. 00:06:40.96\00:06:43.59 So we started reading the book by Barrow, 00:06:43.62\00:06:47.92 "Revolution in the Church." 00:06:47.95\00:06:49.29 And understanding the founding principles 00:06:49.32\00:06:53.39 of our church. 00:06:53.42\00:06:55.00 How pastors were evangelists 00:06:55.03\00:06:58.24 and how they would then train the lay members, 00:06:58.27\00:07:03.05 to then continue leading the church 00:07:03.08\00:07:06.00 and they would move on to planting other churches. 00:07:06.03\00:07:09.44 And how this was so attractive 00:07:09.47\00:07:11.90 to other congregations to the extent that 00:07:11.93\00:07:15.44 their used to come to us and say, how is it that 00:07:15.47\00:07:18.39 the Adventist Church is growing so fast? 00:07:18.42\00:07:21.03 And the principles there 00:07:21.06\00:07:23.66 which are in the book of Acts were coming out, 00:07:23.69\00:07:27.82 that this is the model that Paul used 00:07:27.85\00:07:30.39 and this is what we use. 00:07:30.42\00:07:32.26 And based on that understanding, 00:07:32.29\00:07:35.25 I couldn't sit on that information. 00:07:35.28\00:07:38.13 I then resolved to go out and try and create, 00:07:38.16\00:07:44.74 encourage a lay church planting movement 00:07:44.77\00:07:47.89 in the South England Conference. 00:07:47.92\00:07:49.97 And just went out and started Sure Way Community Church. 00:07:50.00\00:07:54.47 Well, just so that our viewers know this, 00:07:54.50\00:07:57.07 you were fully employed as a software engineer 00:07:57.10\00:08:00.64 or designer, you were in IT. 00:08:00.67\00:08:03.13 Yes, I am in IT and working a full day 00:08:03.16\00:08:09.54 as you can appreciate these days. 00:08:09.57\00:08:13.03 As a solution architect consultant in IT, 00:08:13.06\00:08:16.57 but I see ministry as actually of primary importance. 00:08:16.60\00:08:20.50 Wonderful, so you decided with your friend 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.72 that you are going to plant a church. 00:08:22.75\00:08:23.92 What happened? 00:08:23.95\00:08:26.33 Well, we started, in the first year, 00:08:26.36\00:08:28.07 we started reading this book. 00:08:28.10\00:08:29.50 We used to meet every Wednesday, 00:08:29.53\00:08:32.07 but at the end of the year 00:08:32.10\00:08:34.57 I went to the SEEDS Conference in Andrews University in 2000 00:08:34.60\00:08:40.44 and when I came back, I said to my congregation, 00:08:40.47\00:08:44.90 I wouldn't be continuing, 00:08:44.93\00:08:46.28 I would go out and plant a church. 00:08:46.31\00:08:47.74 So I worked with the local church 00:08:47.77\00:08:50.55 and put together a church planting plan 00:08:50.58\00:08:53.98 that got approval from the church 00:08:54.01\00:08:56.51 and the church board and we went out 00:08:56.54\00:08:59.83 to start planting the church. 00:08:59.86\00:09:02.35 But the curious thing is, whenever you set out, 00:09:02.38\00:09:06.97 it's good having an intellectual assent, 00:09:07.00\00:09:10.10 it's another thing to actually take a step out 00:09:10.13\00:09:13.52 and plant the church, 00:09:13.55\00:09:14.84 so those I started with did not continue. 00:09:14.87\00:09:19.72 But with my family and a few others about half a dozen 00:09:19.75\00:09:23.70 or so of us went ahead and planted the church. 00:09:23.73\00:09:27.43 And in this-- well, it's a community 00:09:27.46\00:09:31.38 with very few Adventists. 00:09:31.41\00:09:33.43 And an area of deprivation, 00:09:33.46\00:09:40.21 a lot of social problems. 00:09:40.24\00:09:42.65 So we established the church there 00:09:42.68\00:09:44.46 and it's still going strong today. 00:09:44.49\00:09:47.03 Wonderful, and the good news is you've already started 00:09:47.06\00:09:49.37 on planting your second group of believers. 00:09:49.40\00:09:52.48 Yes, so two years ago I went out into 00:09:52.51\00:09:56.22 another neighboring area 00:09:56.25\00:09:58.61 and with a group of about 12 people 00:09:58.64\00:10:02.17 and we are now in our beginning 00:10:02.20\00:10:06.40 of our third year in planting that church 00:10:06.43\00:10:09.49 and the vision in this particular community 00:10:09.52\00:10:13.12 is to establish a center 00:10:13.15\00:10:15.39 of influence on the high street, 00:10:15.42\00:10:17.86 so that the church can be present 00:10:17.89\00:10:20.77 at least six days a week, 00:10:20.80\00:10:22.69 rubbing shoulders with people in this community 00:10:22.72\00:10:25.12 and us making a difference in that area. 00:10:25.15\00:10:29.43 I just love that. So what are the-- 00:10:29.46\00:10:32.95 You're starting a center of influence, 00:10:32.98\00:10:34.39 what are the principles that guide you 00:10:34.42\00:10:37.20 as you seek to start this group of believers? 00:10:37.23\00:10:41.09 Well, as I said, one of the principles 00:10:41.12\00:10:45.22 I believe in is that 00:10:45.25\00:10:46.92 the church should be part of the community. 00:10:46.95\00:10:50.09 Wonderful. 00:10:50.12\00:10:51.17 So one of the principles is that 00:10:51.20\00:10:52.93 people who belong to this church 00:10:52.96\00:10:54.74 must be within a specific radius of the church, 00:10:54.77\00:11:00.17 so that they can be dissolved. 00:11:00.20\00:11:02.56 And so we can do the mingling and the mixing. 00:11:02.59\00:11:05.59 And we can put into practice Christ's method. 00:11:05.62\00:11:09.20 So some of our ministry ideas 00:11:09.23\00:11:12.12 are all about mixing and mingling. 00:11:12.15\00:11:14.89 So one of the examples 00:11:14.92\00:11:16.20 that we are currently doing is that once a month, 00:11:16.23\00:11:19.49 there is a farmer's market in the High Street in this town 00:11:19.52\00:11:24.47 and we have taken a stall in that farmers market. 00:11:24.50\00:11:28.31 And so every first Sunday of the month, 00:11:28.34\00:11:30.26 we're out there, on the stall, sharing healthy food 00:11:30.29\00:11:36.18 and also our church literature. 00:11:36.21\00:11:39.71 We run health seminars, again people come 00:11:39.74\00:11:44.74 and we share with them the principles 00:11:44.77\00:11:48.16 of the church in terms of health 00:11:48.19\00:11:50.42 and that is the way we continue to build 00:11:50.45\00:11:53.77 relationships with these individuals. 00:11:53.80\00:11:56.21 Okay, so no community church 00:11:56.24\00:11:58.69 where people drive in and then go away, 00:11:58.72\00:12:01.89 you're actually embedded in the community. 00:12:01.92\00:12:03.87 We're trying to be part of that community 00:12:03.90\00:12:05.90 and be embedded in the community. 00:12:05.93\00:12:07.70 Know the issues that 00:12:07.73\00:12:09.33 we share in common with those people. 00:12:09.36\00:12:12.03 While we do surveys but at least 00:12:12.06\00:12:14.41 we know some of the issues directly ourselves 00:12:14.44\00:12:17.42 because we live in the community. 00:12:17.45\00:12:19.20 Now are you funded entirely by the church? 00:12:19.23\00:12:23.24 No, Obviously, no. 00:12:23.27\00:12:25.44 In fact we haven't taken any funding at all 00:12:25.47\00:12:27.29 from the conference for this program. 00:12:27.32\00:12:31.37 It's entirely sacrificial. 00:12:31.40\00:12:34.13 What we are actually doing, 00:12:34.16\00:12:35.24 one of our founding principles is, 00:12:35.27\00:12:38.98 as the churches are saying, 00:12:39.01\00:12:40.74 the original church is now returning 00:12:40.77\00:12:44.19 a significant amount of tithe. 00:12:44.22\00:12:46.26 To the conference and of course, 00:12:46.29\00:12:48.51 within that church we don't have a paid employee. 00:12:48.54\00:12:52.10 Its lay lead. 00:12:52.13\00:12:53.16 Its lay lead which means the funds 00:12:53.19\00:12:55.13 that are generated by this church plant 00:12:55.16\00:12:59.40 or this new church, can be used 00:12:59.43\00:13:01.91 by the conference to target an un-entered area. 00:13:01.94\00:13:05.92 Where they can send an evangelistic pastor 00:13:05.95\00:13:08.73 to go and raise a church in that community. 00:13:08.76\00:13:12.83 So we're bringing about a greater level 00:13:12.86\00:13:15.77 of involvement of people 00:13:15.80\00:13:17.51 who would otherwise be warming benches 00:13:17.54\00:13:19.94 in the big mother church 00:13:19.97\00:13:22.17 but when they come into this smaller community, 00:13:22.20\00:13:25.03 there can be a greater level of involvement. 00:13:25.06\00:13:27.82 But we are also facilitating the growth 00:13:27.85\00:13:31.01 of our aggressive mission 00:13:31.04\00:13:33.36 by actually saying to the conference, 00:13:33.39\00:13:35.18 here are our resources, we don't need a pastor here, 00:13:35.21\00:13:39.90 you use that money to send an evangelist somewhere else. 00:13:39.93\00:13:43.58 Fantastic, wonderful story 00:13:43.61\00:13:45.76 and God bless you and your ministry. 00:13:45.79\00:13:47.51 Thank you. 00:13:47.54\00:13:48.74 What an exciting thing 00:13:48.77\00:13:50.49 that's happening right here in London, 00:13:50.52\00:13:52.49 in a territory of so many million people. 00:13:52.52\00:13:55.29 Don't go away, we'll be right back 00:13:55.32\00:13:57.03 straight after this break. 00:13:57.06\00:13:58.79
