Welcome back to the program. 00:00:06.83\00:00:08.24 Coming to you today from Mumbai, India. 00:00:08.27\00:00:11.26 Next up we're going to travel not to far from here, 00:00:11.29\00:00:13.81 to one of the most populated regions 00:00:13.84\00:00:15.72 of the world, Bangladesh. 00:00:15.75\00:00:17.93 And Pastor Doug Venn is talking to Dr. Lee. 00:00:17.96\00:00:21.72 Thanks Gary, I'm right now here in Bangladesh 00:00:21.75\00:00:24.04 with my good friend Dr. Myun Ju Lee. 00:00:24.07\00:00:27.08 And, Dr. Lee, good to have you on the show today. 00:00:27.11\00:00:30.06 Yeah, Good to be with you. 00:00:30.09\00:00:31.17 Where are we here in Bangladesh? 00:00:31.20\00:00:33.05 Now we are in Gowalbathan Kaliakoir, Gazipur 00:00:33.08\00:00:37.21 where our Bangladesh Adventist Seminary 00:00:37.24\00:00:41.01 and College are located. 00:00:41.04\00:00:42.38 Okay, well, that's quite a mouthful to say that 00:00:42.41\00:00:44.89 you know, the village name and the province name. 00:00:44.92\00:00:47.18 Yes. 00:00:47.21\00:00:48.25 Here in Bangladesh, how many people are there? 00:00:48.28\00:00:51.29 160 million people live in this small country. 00:00:51.32\00:00:56.09 Wow, wow, that's great. 00:00:56.12\00:00:58.04 Now I know that God has called you 00:00:58.07\00:01:00.20 and your family to serve as missionaries. 00:01:00.23\00:01:02.62 But what's that story? 00:01:02.65\00:01:04.82 To make this short story short, 00:01:04.85\00:01:07.59 actually I was converted from Methodist 00:01:07.62\00:01:10.50 when I was 17 years old. 00:01:10.53\00:01:12.59 At that time, I decided to be a worldwide missionary. 00:01:12.62\00:01:16.72 God fulfilled my dream. 00:01:16.75\00:01:18.48 First I went to Argentina as a missionary, 00:01:18.51\00:01:21.38 for six years I served the church membership there. 00:01:21.41\00:01:25.17 Then I was dreaming to go to Africa 00:01:25.20\00:01:28.26 but God called me to be in Bangladesh. 00:01:28.29\00:01:31.58 But I'm very happy to serve the people who are here. 00:01:31.61\00:01:34.47 Very good. 00:01:34.50\00:01:35.54 How long has you and your family have 00:01:35.57\00:01:37.20 you served here in Bangladesh? 00:01:37.23\00:01:38.90 I came here in 2005, almost nine years, 00:01:38.93\00:01:44.98 more nine years already. 00:01:45.01\00:01:46.05 Wow, that's great. 00:01:46.08\00:01:47.42 And in those nine years, 00:01:47.45\00:01:48.89 what have been some of the lessons 00:01:48.92\00:01:50.36 that you have learned? 00:01:50.39\00:01:51.73 Here, I have learned how to love the people. 00:01:51.76\00:01:56.18 Because these people, even though they are very poor, 00:01:56.21\00:01:59.51 they are very lovable people. 00:01:59.54\00:02:01.49 God has given me the chance to love and serve the people. 00:02:01.52\00:02:05.39 I like and I love to serve the people 00:02:05.42\00:02:08.67 who are in Bangladesh. 00:02:08.70\00:02:10.10 That's great, Dr. Lee, 00:02:10.13\00:02:11.91 that you're following Christ's method alone 00:02:11.94\00:02:14.40 to then care for the people and have that impact 00:02:14.43\00:02:18.96 with the love of God to serve. 00:02:18.99\00:02:21.35 Can you tell of one story of how you've seen 00:02:21.38\00:02:25.24 God work in maybe a life of a student or someone? 00:02:25.27\00:02:32.52 For example, when I was serving 00:02:32.55\00:02:36.55 in Bangladesh Seminary and College, 00:02:36.58\00:02:40.53 I was called, I saw many students, 00:02:40.56\00:02:44.10 they came from different backgrounds, 00:02:44.13\00:02:46.41 even from different religions but really, God is so great 00:02:46.44\00:02:51.26 He changed their lives in the college, 00:02:51.29\00:02:55.32 now they are serving as leaders, 00:02:55.35\00:02:57.13 as servants in our denomination. 00:02:57.16\00:02:59.86 Wow, that's great. 00:02:59.89\00:03:00.92 That's great to see how you've been able 00:03:00.95\00:03:02.75 to see through education how lives have been improved. 00:03:02.78\00:03:07.48 As well as in how the country has been able 00:03:07.51\00:03:09.43 to be improved through their service. 00:03:09.46\00:03:11.33 Yes. 00:03:11.36\00:03:12.39 So, what are some of the challenges 00:03:12.42\00:03:14.76 and opportunities that you face here? 00:03:14.79\00:03:16.66 Because you're serving 00:03:16.69\00:03:17.78 as the Union president here in Bangladesh. 00:03:17.81\00:03:20.55 So what are those some of those challenges 00:03:20.58\00:03:22.17 and opportunities that you're facing? 00:03:22.20\00:03:24.29 Last seven years, seven months 00:03:24.32\00:03:26.27 I was serving as college president 00:03:26.30\00:03:29.05 but now I am serving the people as Union president. 00:03:29.08\00:03:33.36 Actually, there is opportunity here 00:03:33.39\00:03:36.38 to reach the people through education system. 00:03:36.41\00:03:39.95 Since this other religion country, 00:03:39.98\00:03:42.88 dominates the country, on reaching the people, 00:03:42.91\00:03:46.57 education is the best way to reach the people, 00:03:46.60\00:03:50.16 when they are young. 00:03:50.19\00:03:51.63 Our children are young, this is an opportunity 00:03:51.66\00:03:54.51 to educate them, to make the people of God. 00:03:54.54\00:03:57.78 Right. yeah. 00:03:57.81\00:03:58.84 But there is a great challenge 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.45 because financially it is very poor in this country, 00:04:01.48\00:04:06.73 so we need to develop 00:04:06.76\00:04:08.12 a lot of things through education system. 00:04:08.15\00:04:10.87 Like, I know you were sharing with me, 00:04:10.90\00:04:13.10 as we've been visiting here, in the country, 00:04:13.13\00:04:15.04 that your goal and vision is to have 00:04:15.07\00:04:17.73 each of the schools around the nation 00:04:17.76\00:04:19.75 to become self-supporting financially 00:04:19.78\00:04:22.32 and to have work study programs. 00:04:22.35\00:04:24.37 Why is that so important? 00:04:24.40\00:04:26.13 Actually we have seven boarding schools 00:04:26.16\00:04:30.27 but financially it's very difficult, 00:04:30.30\00:04:33.90 so we want to teach them 00:04:33.93\00:04:36.14 how to go to self-supporting institutions. 00:04:36.17\00:04:39.76 That's why we need to develop several types of projects. 00:04:39.79\00:04:43.75 When we teach them that types of income generating project, 00:04:43.78\00:04:48.05 our students will be studying in a self-supportive system. 00:04:48.08\00:04:53.97 That is my conviction. 00:04:54.00\00:04:55.92 That's great. 00:04:55.95\00:04:57.22 Can you share for our viewers what are some of the examples 00:04:57.25\00:05:01.34 of having this work study or income generating projects. 00:05:01.37\00:05:06.74 Practically, what are some of the schools 00:05:06.77\00:05:08.65 doing now that's working? 00:05:08.68\00:05:09.99 Thank you. 00:05:10.02\00:05:11.43 Specially, if we would make some pure water drinking system 00:05:11.46\00:05:16.22 it would be good to generate income for the school. 00:05:16.25\00:05:19.75 Also we can give that water for the community service. 00:05:19.78\00:05:23.75 Another way, in Bangladesh, there are 30,000 NGOs. 00:05:23.78\00:05:29.03 Many people travel to the local villages. 00:05:29.06\00:05:32.04 If we would build some guest house in our school, 00:05:32.07\00:05:35.60 it would be also income generating. 00:05:35.63\00:05:37.89 Another is a goat project, that animal. 00:05:37.92\00:05:41.88 It's very good to grow in Bangladesh. 00:05:41.91\00:05:44.74 For example, if we would go to East Bangladesh Mission, 00:05:44.77\00:05:49.37 whole year there is food on the hillside and mountains. 00:05:49.40\00:05:52.66 When we really reach this idea 00:05:52.69\00:05:55.47 I think and believe we can earn a lot of funds 00:05:55.50\00:06:00.08 so that we can support for each school. 00:06:00.11\00:06:02.65 That is my conviction. 00:06:02.68\00:06:03.79 That's great, that God has planted 00:06:03.82\00:06:06.38 this vision to have a water bottle 00:06:06.41\00:06:09.73 and filtration plant at one of the schools 00:06:09.76\00:06:13.09 as well as even to have goat ministry 00:06:13.12\00:06:15.87 where people can raise these animals 00:06:15.90\00:06:18.79 and then either sell the milk or sell the animals 00:06:18.82\00:06:22.17 and that way the school 00:06:22.20\00:06:23.43 and students are able to earn their tuition payments. 00:06:23.46\00:06:27.54 Dr. Lee, it's been great 00:06:27.57\00:06:29.08 but I want to ask Mrs. Lee to come. 00:06:29.11\00:06:33.01 Gary, it's been great to be here with the Lee's 00:06:33.04\00:06:35.91 and here in this beautiful place in Bangladesh. 00:06:35.94\00:06:39.48 So reporting live from this village, 00:06:39.51\00:06:41.72 I can't say the name, it's very long. 00:06:41.75\00:06:43.63 But back to you Gary. 00:06:43.66\00:06:46.43 For many Adventists, their first view 00:06:46.46\00:06:48.38 of world mission came through 00:06:48.41\00:06:49.88 the Mission Spotlight presentations 00:06:49.91\00:06:52.55 that were shown in Sabbath Schools 00:06:52.58\00:06:54.08 all around the world for many, many years. 00:06:54.11\00:06:56.67 Produced by the Heinrich family, 00:06:56.70\00:06:59.13 these presentations just opened up new vistas 00:06:59.16\00:07:03.35 for people to see what was happening 00:07:03.38\00:07:05.08 in mission around the world. 00:07:05.11\00:07:06.74 Well, I'm delighted to tell you that 00:07:06.77\00:07:08.17 Mission Spotlight is back. 00:07:08.20\00:07:10.05 And the Adventist Mission DVD that we produce 00:07:10.08\00:07:12.42 and that's sent to churches all around the world 00:07:12.45\00:07:14.77 is now going to be called Mission Spotlight. 00:07:14.80\00:07:17.30 It will still contain the stories that 00:07:17.33\00:07:19.16 you've come to love. 00:07:19.19\00:07:21.18 Every quarter there will be three major presentations 00:07:21.21\00:07:24.50 that can be shown once a month or if you prefer, 00:07:24.53\00:07:27.36 they'll be a new story that can be shown every week. 00:07:27.39\00:07:30.95 Next up, we're going to see a story 00:07:30.98\00:07:32.76 from the Mission Spotlight DVD. 00:07:32.79\00:07:35.32 A center of influence 00:07:35.35\00:07:36.91 that's making a difference in Korea. 00:07:36.94\00:07:39.96 Centers of Influence are transforming 00:07:49.43\00:07:51.55 how we do ministry in certain parts of the world. 00:07:51.58\00:07:55.03 A center of influence serves the needs 00:07:55.06\00:07:58.07 of the communities in a number of ways. 00:07:58.10\00:08:00.85 This can be an opportunity to minister 00:08:00.88\00:08:02.90 to people in creative, new ways. 00:08:02.93\00:08:06.07 We find centers of influence dotted across the globe. 00:08:06.10\00:08:10.28 In Korea, this concept has been in place for years now. 00:08:10.31\00:08:14.20 They are serving their communities 00:08:14.23\00:08:15.90 in practical ways. 00:08:15.93\00:08:17.91 Kwon John Haeng 00:08:17.94\00:08:19.13 is a Seventh-day Adventist pastor 00:08:19.16\00:08:21.37 who is heavily involved in coordinating 00:08:21.40\00:08:23.31 centers of influence 00:08:23.34\00:08:24.84 throughout the Northern Asia-Pacific region, 00:08:24.87\00:08:26.96 around the world. 00:08:26.99\00:08:28.04 There are 110 centers of influence in Korea 00:08:28.07\00:08:31.51 and today we visit a restaurant 00:08:31.54\00:08:35.02 which is run by the Seoul Central Church. 00:08:35.05\00:08:37.83 The Seoul Central Church is located 00:08:37.86\00:08:39.74 in the very center of the Seoul metropolitan area. 00:08:39.77\00:08:42.92 The church is located in a very busy 00:08:42.95\00:08:45.77 and expensive area, 00:08:45.80\00:08:47.66 but the church only opened once a week. 00:08:47.69\00:08:50.27 The church decided 12 years ago, 00:08:50.30\00:08:52.68 to open their cafeteria to the public 00:08:52.71\00:08:54.82 to provide good vegetarian food. 00:08:54.85\00:08:57.68 In the business area, 00:08:57.71\00:08:59.40 there are not many vegetarian restaurants. 00:08:59.43\00:09:02.21 You know, across the street there is the Jogye, 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.65 that is the headquarters of Korean Buddhism. 00:09:05.68\00:09:09.04 And they are all vegetarian people. 00:09:09.07\00:09:11.55 As we started we didn't have much customers 00:09:11.58\00:09:15.33 but these days we are entertaining 00:09:15.36\00:09:17.20 180 to 200 people every day. 00:09:17.23\00:09:22.43 Most of them-- almost all of them 00:09:22.46\00:09:23.96 are non-Adventist members. 00:09:23.99\00:09:26.15 But they really love our Adventist style healthy food. 00:09:26.18\00:09:31.56 In the beginning, the church invested 00:09:31.59\00:09:33.45 a lot of money to renovate the cafeteria. 00:09:33.48\00:09:36.52 But today, the restaurant makes a good income 00:09:36.55\00:09:39.40 and provides jobs for six Adventist members. 00:09:39.43\00:09:43.37 With the income, they make donations 00:09:43.40\00:09:45.57 to the local government. 00:09:45.60\00:09:47.31 In that area the church has a good reputation. 00:09:47.34\00:09:51.93 The church decided to provide a scholarship 00:09:51.96\00:09:54.18 for needy students. 00:09:54.21\00:09:55.91 So regardlessof their religion or background, 00:09:55.94\00:09:58.77 any middle school student and high school student 00:09:58.80\00:10:01.67 can come to this church and get the full scholarship. 00:10:01.70\00:10:05.24 As a result some of them have majored in theology. 00:10:05.27\00:10:10.23 And one of them is serving 00:10:10.26\00:10:11.61 as the choir conductor of the church. 00:10:11.64\00:10:16.02 And then still they do have more income. 00:10:16.05\00:10:18.81 Therefore they began to help elderly citizens. 00:10:18.84\00:10:23.32 As we visit the church every Sabbath morning, 00:10:23.35\00:10:25.98 the church entertains more than 200 senor citizens 00:10:26.01\00:10:29.41 and the church provides them 00:10:29.44\00:10:31.12 not only spiritual food but physical food also. 00:10:31.15\00:10:34.33 You know, twice a month 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.39 they providing their round trip bus fare also. 00:10:36.42\00:10:41.14 As a result, the church baptizes about 00:10:41.17\00:10:43.86 60 people every year from that ministry. 00:10:43.89\00:10:47.30 As they support the senior citizen ministry. 00:10:47.33\00:10:50.66 This center of influence in the heart of Seoul 00:10:50.69\00:10:54.03 has been a light to the community 00:10:54.06\00:10:55.72 for more than twelve years. 00:10:55.75\00:10:58.33 Please pray as it continues to grow 00:10:58.36\00:11:00.70 and serve the community. 00:11:00.73\00:11:05.76 Well, I hope you've been inspired 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.02 and challenged by today's 360 degree view 00:11:07.05\00:11:09.87 of mission around the world. 00:11:09.90\00:11:11.76 From the teaming metropolis of Mumbai to Mongolia, 00:11:11.79\00:11:15.78 to education in Bangladesh, to centers of influence 00:11:15.81\00:11:20.10 in South Korea people are sharing the light 00:11:20.13\00:11:22.72 of God's love in many different ways, 00:11:22.75\00:11:24.72 many creative ways. 00:11:24.75\00:11:26.70 Please continue to pray for mission around the world. 00:11:26.73\00:11:29.28 Pray for frontline
