Behind me is the Gateway of India, 00:00:09.96\00:00:11.94 erected to commemorate the landing of King George 00:00:11.97\00:00:14.91 and Queen Mary many years ago. 00:00:14.94\00:00:17.45 This structure was the building 00:00:17.48\00:00:19.60 that greeted people who arrived by boat. 00:00:19.63\00:00:22.00 The first thing that they saw of the city of Bombay, 00:00:22.03\00:00:25.05 today know as Mumbai. 00:00:25.08\00:00:26.86 It's also the first place on our visit 00:00:26.89\00:00:29.06 on today's program to this huge, wonderful city. 00:00:29.09\00:00:32.77 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:38.10\00:00:40.68 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:40.71\00:00:43.71 He gave us a mission. 00:00:43.74\00:00:46.40 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world 00:00:46.43\00:00:51.18 telling them of His love." 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.79 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:53.82\00:00:57.70 Hello and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:01:08.87\00:01:11.14 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:11.17\00:01:12.44 Today's program is coming to you from the city of Mumbai, 00:01:12.47\00:01:15.65 formerly known as Bombay. 00:01:15.68\00:01:17.70 And its Republic Day here and hundreds of people 00:01:17.73\00:01:20.11 are out in this park enjoying the day, 00:01:20.14\00:01:22.44 playing India's most popular sport, cricket. 00:01:22.47\00:01:24.82 In fact, I'm taking my life in my hands here 00:01:24.85\00:01:27.14 as cricket balls come through from all angles. 00:01:27.17\00:01:30.03 This is India's most populous cities, some 21 million people. 00:01:30.06\00:01:34.71 In fact, it's one of the world's largest cities 00:01:34.74\00:01:36.59 and every day thousands of families move into this city 00:01:36.62\00:01:40.34 because they have hopes of more opportunities in the city. 00:01:40.37\00:01:45.33 When you look at the crowds, 00:01:45.36\00:01:46.96 when you look at the people you ask the question 00:01:46.99\00:01:49.59 how can the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:49.62\00:01:51.36 even begin to have an impact in a place like this? 00:01:51.39\00:01:55.51 We'll be looking at that question 00:01:55.54\00:01:57.40 and others on today's program. 00:01:57.43\00:01:58.81 And first up, let's travel to Mongolia. 00:01:58.84\00:02:01.21 If you journey through Northern Asia, 00:02:07.64\00:02:09.71 you're likely to experience great diversity. 00:02:09.74\00:02:12.98 From small mountain villages 00:02:13.01\00:02:14.69 to some of the largest cities in the world, 00:02:14.72\00:02:17.56 the Northern Asia-Pacific region has it all. 00:02:17.59\00:02:21.29 In terms of population, 00:02:21.32\00:02:23.04 this region is the largest in the world. 00:02:23.07\00:02:26.59 And we have about 1.6 billion people 00:02:26.62\00:02:30.02 living in our territories. 00:02:30.05\00:02:32.50 So when you hear about China and Mongolia, 00:02:32.53\00:02:35.08 North Korea, and also Japan, you see, 00:02:35.11\00:02:38.01 and then you can imagine 00:02:38.04\00:02:39.18 that we have a huge mission challenges 00:02:39.21\00:02:42.54 in everywhere in our division territories. 00:02:42.57\00:02:46.38 With such diversity and size, 00:02:46.41\00:02:48.67 the challenges are clearly visible 00:02:48.70\00:02:50.85 and can sometimes seem overwhelming. 00:02:50.88\00:02:53.28 Despite the difficulty, God has willing servants 00:02:53.31\00:02:56.86 throughout the territory. 00:02:56.89\00:02:59.04 Many people in our division territories 00:02:59.07\00:03:01.49 they have a passion for mission. 00:03:01.52\00:03:03.64 When we encourage them, 00:03:03.67\00:03:05.15 when we work together with them with much prayer, 00:03:05.18\00:03:08.79 I'm sure that the Lord will continue to bless 00:03:08.82\00:03:12.17 our missionary activities in our division territories. 00:03:12.20\00:03:16.83 God has opened impossible doors in the past. 00:03:16.86\00:03:20.46 Not long ago, the country of Mongolia 00:03:20.49\00:03:23.34 seemed as though the gospel 00:03:23.37\00:03:24.67 could never cross into its borders. 00:03:24.70\00:03:27.87 Mongolia is a country 00:03:27.90\00:03:29.12 where about half of its population 00:03:29.15\00:03:30.91 lives in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. 00:03:30.94\00:03:34.52 The challenge of spreading the gospel here is evident. 00:03:34.55\00:03:41.23 Enkhbayar was one of the first Mongolians to be baptized 00:03:41.26\00:03:44.47 into the Seventh-day Adventist Church back in the 1990s. 00:03:44.50\00:03:48.72 This is a country as considered was a closed country 00:03:48.75\00:03:52.96 because we were 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.66 one of the former communist countries. 00:03:54.69\00:03:57.46 So we all grew up with no religion at all. 00:03:57.49\00:04:03.14 And after 1990s 00:04:03.17\00:04:08.68 when communism collapsed, things get changed. 00:04:08.71\00:04:12.69 Suddenly people found some kind of empty space in their hearts. 00:04:12.72\00:04:17.02 When Enkhbayar was a student, 00:04:17.05\00:04:18.86 she met a foreign woman at a school 00:04:18.89\00:04:20.94 and became friends with her. 00:04:20.97\00:04:22.82 Her new friend and her husband were sent 00:04:22.85\00:04:25.25 by Adventist Frontier Missions to Mongolia. 00:04:25.28\00:04:29.05 One Saturday, Enkhbayar went over to her new friend's house 00:04:29.08\00:04:32.81 and noticed they had just finished studying 00:04:32.84\00:04:34.88 from a book she didn't recognize. 00:04:34.91\00:04:37.98 She was curious so she started asking questions. 00:04:38.01\00:04:41.82 I want to learn that. 00:04:41.85\00:04:43.67 And that just sparked a little flame inside, 00:04:43.70\00:04:46.27 what is that, I want to learn. 00:04:46.30\00:04:48.37 She was encouraged to join them the next week 00:04:48.40\00:04:51.04 and she became eager to learn about the Bible. 00:04:51.07\00:04:54.27 She went back the next week, 00:04:54.30\00:04:56.29 and after a while they became close friends 00:04:56.32\00:04:59.39 as they studied the Bible together. 00:04:59.42\00:05:01.73 Every Sabbath, I think since then 00:05:01.76\00:05:03.57 I never missed a Sabbath meeting. 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.70 Because of friendship I get close to God 00:05:06.73\00:05:11.54 and I always say, I didn't find God 00:05:11.57\00:05:14.48 because I was blind and never interested. 00:05:14.51\00:05:18.17 Only God found me and He made the way to find me. 00:05:18.20\00:05:25.57 When Jesus was on this earth, He cared for people. 00:05:25.60\00:05:30.13 He was their friend 00:05:30.16\00:05:31.64 and He helped them with their problems. 00:05:31.67\00:05:34.22 As we continue to represent God, 00:05:34.25\00:05:36.82 shouldn't we follow Christ's example? 00:05:36.85\00:05:39.95 Enkhbayar's heart was touched 00:05:39.98\00:05:42.01 because those missionaries first shared Christ's love. 00:05:42.04\00:05:46.14 There are so many things attracted to me 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.20 because of their kindness 00:05:48.23\00:05:51.63 and sincerity to Mongolian people. 00:05:51.66\00:05:54.41 Even they served to poorest people 00:05:54.44\00:05:58.88 that we would never think of to helping them. 00:05:58.91\00:06:03.70 But they are so kind and nice people. 00:06:03.73\00:06:06.71 And finally I found it's because of God in their heart 00:06:06.74\00:06:10.58 they became-- they are so kind 00:06:10.61\00:06:12.43 and they became very close to my heart. 00:06:12.46\00:06:15.92 And through their friendship 00:06:15.95\00:06:17.26 I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. 00:06:17.29\00:06:19.66 And because of their kindness 00:06:19.69\00:06:22.49 I learned how to be kind to others. 00:06:22.52\00:06:25.04 Because of their true friendship 00:06:25.07\00:06:27.02 I became close to Jesus as my friend. 00:06:27.05\00:06:30.29 Since then, other Mongolians 00:06:30.32\00:06:32.47 have come to know the love of Jesus. 00:06:32.50\00:06:35.43 Thanks to Adventist Churches and schools 00:06:35.46\00:06:38.11 people in Mongolia can learn about Jesus. 00:06:38.14\00:06:41.18 Despite the challenges in countries like Mongolia, 00:06:41.21\00:06:44.29 God is now using faithful servants 00:06:44.32\00:06:46.77 like Enkhbayar to spread His message. 00:06:46.80\00:06:50.10 Please continue to pray for territories 00:06:50.13\00:06:52.41 like those in the Northern Asia-Pacific region. 00:06:52.44\00:06:56.26 Pray that the work can move quickly 00:06:56.29\00:06:58.38 through these difficult areas. 00:06:58.41\00:07:00.45 But these countries are beautiful tour 00:07:00.48\00:07:03.95 and God has blessed these countries in many ways. 00:07:03.98\00:07:07.75 And we hope that that we can spread 00:07:07.78\00:07:09.53 the gospel message 00:07:09.56\00:07:10.60 to the people in our territories 00:07:10.63\00:07:13.33 so many people can be saved into the kingdom of God. 00:07:13.36\00:07:17.47 My guest is Dr. Solomon 00:07:24.73\00:07:26.60 who is a behavioral science researcher 00:07:26.63\00:07:29.73 and teacher here in the city of Mumbai. 00:07:29.76\00:07:31.99 Dr. Solomon, thanks for joining us. 00:07:32.02\00:07:33.69 Thank you. 00:07:33.72\00:07:34.75 Now, you are a Seventy-day Adventist church member 00:07:34.78\00:07:36.50 who has been living here for how long? 00:07:36.53\00:07:38.40 Yeah, about 28 years. 00:07:38.43\00:07:39.68 Twenty eight years, so you know this city well 00:07:39.71\00:07:41.75 and you are one among 21 million people 00:07:41.78\00:07:47.37 and I think I've seen almost all of them today 00:07:47.40\00:07:49.51 because it's such a busy place. 00:07:49.54\00:07:50.98 Well, tell us about this city. 00:07:51.01\00:07:53.25 What's distinctive about it, what makes it tick? 00:07:53.28\00:07:56.27 Yes. 00:07:56.30\00:07:57.88 In India, Mumbai is considered to be the city 00:07:57.91\00:08:00.05 that is a magnet for migrants. 00:08:00.08\00:08:03.59 This is so because this is a place 00:08:03.62\00:08:06.17 which is considered to be a dream city 00:08:06.20\00:08:07.75 for the people of India because people believe that 00:08:07.78\00:08:09.89 they can come over to India 00:08:09.92\00:08:11.26 and they can get jobs and make a life. 00:08:11.29\00:08:13.78 There have been lots of stories of people 00:08:13.81\00:08:15.70 who came with almost nothing and they became millionaires. 00:08:15.73\00:08:18.88 So people around India they think that 00:08:18.91\00:08:21.16 Mumbai is a wonderful city 00:08:21.19\00:08:22.33 that they also can come about and become big persons. 00:08:22.36\00:08:26.16 And I think that's what attracts people. 00:08:26.19\00:08:28.36 And one more real truth is that nobody 00:08:28.39\00:08:30.89 who comes to Mumbai goes empty handed, 00:08:30.92\00:08:33.06 they all get jobs and they get settled down over here. 00:08:33.09\00:08:36.55 They find difficulty in finding I mean, 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.71 accommodation and other things, 00:08:38.74\00:08:40.07 but jobs they will always get 00:08:40.10\00:08:41.85 and that's why people come over here. 00:08:41.88\00:08:43.07 Right. 00:08:43.10\00:08:44.13 So obviously in this city there is some fabulous wealth 00:08:44.16\00:08:47.99 but I've also seen people who are struggling to survive. 00:08:48.02\00:08:51.43 But it all comes together in a mass of people 00:08:51.46\00:08:55.33 and you look at this and you say, 00:08:55.36\00:08:57.84 okay, we're in Adventist Church here of maybe 10,000 members. 00:08:57.87\00:09:02.00 What sort of impact can we make on this city? 00:09:02.03\00:09:04.13 What do we have to offer? 00:09:04.16\00:09:06.45 Well, I believe that Adventist Church is a very unique church 00:09:06.48\00:09:10.52 having a very unique message than most other people. 00:09:10.55\00:09:13.53 And if only we can make use of that unique message, 00:09:13.56\00:09:17.42 whether it is a health message or message for the youth 00:09:17.45\00:09:21.62 these messages can have a strong impact on people. 00:09:21.65\00:09:24.59 And I feel that in a city like this, 00:09:24.62\00:09:26.91 there are lots of people 00:09:26.94\00:09:28.04 who are experiencing loneliness. 00:09:28.07\00:09:30.06 You know, as I said, lots of people are coming over 00:09:30.09\00:09:32.94 to the city and they come and try to make a life. 00:09:32.97\00:09:35.88 But when they come to the city, they find they find very lonely 00:09:35.91\00:09:38.74 and they also find that life is quite tough. 00:09:38.77\00:09:41.20 And they are looking for some sense 00:09:41.23\00:09:43.34 and meaning in their life and they want to really see 00:09:43.37\00:09:46.93 that their life is, you know, pleasant 00:09:46.96\00:09:50.52 and that they are able to adjust very well. 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.58 And they are the people, I suppose, 00:09:52.61\00:09:54.43 that we can reach them 00:09:54.46\00:09:56.08 and present them about the message of love 00:09:56.11\00:09:58.93 and peace that Jesus offers to us. 00:09:58.96\00:10:00.63 Yeah. 00:10:00.66\00:10:01.69 Now Dr. Solomon, you have been involved for some time 00:10:01.72\00:10:04.36 in a in-depth longitudinal study of young people, 00:10:04.39\00:10:08.74 working with researchers 00:10:08.77\00:10:10.01 in America, Australia, and here. 00:10:10.04\00:10:12.73 What are you finding out about the youth here in India? 00:10:12.76\00:10:16.69 Well, I have began this study way back in 2010. 00:10:16.72\00:10:19.86 The study name is called 00:10:19.89\00:10:20.95 as International Youth Development Study. 00:10:20.98\00:10:23.75 This study has been conducted in three nations, 00:10:23.78\00:10:26.23 three continents, and in three cities. 00:10:26.26\00:10:28.87 Melbourne city in Australia and Seattle city in USA 00:10:28.90\00:10:31.96 and Mumbai city in India. 00:10:31.99\00:10:34.50 In these three cities what we are doing 00:10:34.53\00:10:36.25 is that we have been offered the young people, 00:10:36.28\00:10:39.16 especially from the schools and we reach them 00:10:39.19\00:10:42.09 and we administer of psychological tests 00:10:42.12\00:10:45.04 a survey questionnaire that we administer. 00:10:45.07\00:10:47.34 And we have been following these youth 00:10:47.37\00:10:49.66 for year after year as it is a longitudinal city. 00:10:49.69\00:10:52.85 The purpose of this study is to find out 00:10:52.88\00:10:56.01 how young people's lives are being influenced 00:10:56.04\00:10:58.33 because of the globalization factors. 00:10:58.36\00:11:01.75 You know the life has been moving very fast these days 00:11:01.78\00:11:04.32 and information technology has impacting them 00:11:04.35\00:11:07.30 and it's not only impacting the young people 00:11:07.33\00:11:09.08 but also impacting what young people are connected with, 00:11:09.11\00:11:12.63 that is their families, and their schools, 00:11:12.66\00:11:15.22 their peers, even their church also. 00:11:15.25\00:11:17.88 I mean the religious organization 00:11:17.91\00:11:19.51 that they are connected. 00:11:19.54\00:11:20.58 So we are trying to find out how these connections 00:11:20.61\00:11:23.81 are influencing the young people 00:11:23.84\00:11:25.98 and how this connections are making the young people 00:11:26.01\00:11:29.73 to adopt themselves effectively. 00:11:29.76\00:11:31.73 And that's determining their behavior 00:11:31.76\00:11:34.54 whether the behavior is going to be a risk behavior 00:11:34.57\00:11:37.20 or problem behavior or a behavior 00:11:37.23\00:11:39.37 which is supported with lots of protective factors. 00:11:39.40\00:11:44.30 So the areas that you're talking about surely 00:11:44.33\00:11:47.69 we as Seventh-day Adventists would have something 00:11:47.72\00:11:50.36 to say to contribute to help in that. 00:11:50.39\00:11:53.33 Yes, I do agree with you and I believe strongly 00:11:53.36\00:11:55.47 that this research helps us to understand at least 00:11:55.50\00:11:59.57 what are the needs that young people are facing 00:11:59.60\00:12:02.22 in these large cities in general. 00:12:02.25\00:12:05.82 And it also helps us understand that 00:12:05.85\00:12:08.98 which context are very strongly influencing people 00:12:09.01\00:12:12.90 like for example, whether it is a context of peer groups 00:12:12.93\00:12:15.49 or it's a context of families. 00:12:15.52\00:12:17.92 So when we know that for example, 00:12:17.95\00:12:19.76 if we come to know that families are weak, 00:12:19.79\00:12:22.99 families have got risk factors such as, 00:12:23.02\00:12:24.85 you know, in some families 00:12:24.88\00:12:26.20 there is a problem of addiction and things like that. 00:12:26.23\00:12:28.79 When we come to know that, 00:12:28.82\00:12:29.94 I mean, as a church I suppose 00:12:29.97\00:12:31.70 we can also work with the families 00:12:31.73\00:12:33.43 and help them to turn these families 00:12:33.46\00:12:37.36 as a source of strong protective factors, 00:12:37.39\00:12:40.89 you know, we can help families to be, 00:12:40.92\00:12:43.66 I mean, built up, 00:12:43.69\00:12:45.11 help the people to get themselves 00:12:45.14\00:12:47.16 out of these risk behaviors 00:12:47.19\00:12:49.13 where through which they are setting 00:12:49.16\00:12:50.54 a wrong examples or wrong model to these young people. 00:12:50.57\00:12:54.16 So in that way, I think that this research can help 00:12:54.19\00:12:57.18 the church to know about, 00:12:57.21\00:12:58.65 what are the needs and what are the problems 00:12:58.68\00:13:00.53 that we see in the society. 00:13:00.56\00:13:02.14 Dr. Solomon, you have been involved 00:13:02.17\00:13:04.02 in health ministry here in Mumbai, 00:13:04.05\00:13:07.61 briefly tell me what that's been incorporating. 00:13:07.64\00:13:12.83 Well, we do notice that in the city 00:13:12.86\00:13:15.25 like this as a large number of people come, 00:13:15.28\00:13:17.60 they have problems of accommodation 00:13:17.63\00:13:19.29 and they do face several different, different problems. 00:13:19.32\00:13:23.31 And being a crowded city, 00:13:23.34\00:13:25.81 there are limits for effective sanitary systems and all that. 00:13:25.84\00:13:29.94 For all these reasons, we do have a problem health, 00:13:29.97\00:13:33.04 serious health problems, you know, 00:13:33.07\00:13:34.73 people often fall sick to say suppose malaria 00:13:34.76\00:13:39.36 and dengue and during the monsoon period 00:13:39.39\00:13:41.72 that people also fall sick to gastroenteritis. 00:13:41.75\00:13:44.93 And people fall sick to these illnesses partially 00:13:44.96\00:13:49.51 because they are unaware of how to take care of their health. 00:13:49.54\00:13:53.18 Now Seventh-day Adventist church 00:13:53.21\00:13:55.04 is having a unique health message, 00:13:55.07\00:13:57.12 the message that helps people 00:13:57.15\00:13:58.89 to prevent themselves from falling sick. 00:13:58.92\00:14:01.59 So what we do is that we organize health camps 00:14:01.62\00:14:05.89 and we also organize health expos 00:14:05.92\00:14:07.69 through which we are bringing about a greater awareness 00:14:07.72\00:14:10.81 among the people about the need to take care of their health. 00:14:10.84\00:14:16.02 So you have various specialties that you share. 00:14:16.05\00:14:21.39 You have physiotherapists, 00:14:21.42\00:14:23.03 you have massage, you have doctors. 00:14:23.06\00:14:25.63 Yes, yes. Yeah. 00:14:25.66\00:14:27.50 In our church we do have people 00:14:27.53\00:14:28.86 from several health science backgrounds 00:14:28.89\00:14:31.23 and as you say that we have-- I am a psychologist myself, 00:14:31.26\00:14:34.15 and then we have a physiotherapist, 00:14:34.18\00:14:37.15 and we have one doctor and several nurses we've got. 00:14:37.18\00:14:41.50 And usually when we organize a health fair 00:14:41.53\00:14:45.31 all these people work with us and also there are people 00:14:45.34\00:14:48.06 who have studied health sciences broadly. 00:14:48.09\00:14:50.55 They also come and help us in organizing this. 00:14:50.58\00:14:53.28 And there are people 00:14:53.31\00:14:54.34 who are experts in massage, okay. 00:14:54.37\00:14:57.03 And these people provide their skills and abilities 00:14:57.06\00:14:59.95 and as a result of which we are able to help people 00:14:59.98\00:15:02.99 through these fairs to help themselves 00:15:03.02\00:15:05.42 to take care of their personal health 00:15:05.45\00:15:07.42 and thus they will be able to prevent themselves 00:15:07.45\00:15:09.48 from falling sick. 00:15:09.51\00:15:11.05 Fantastic. 00:15:11.08\00:15:12.13 Dr. Solomon, thank you so much for joining us today. 00:15:12.16\00:15:14.41 Thank you. 00:15:14.44\00:15:16.64 And we'll be right back, right after a short break. 00:15:16.67\00:15:19.52
