Welcome back. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 Next up, a fascinating interview in Bangkok, Thailand. 00:00:02.12\00:00:05.49 Thanks a lot, Gary. 00:00:05.52\00:00:07.43 Here with me in Bangkok, Thailand 00:00:07.46\00:00:10.02 is really a group that represents history. 00:00:10.05\00:00:13.54 It's good to have you gentlemen with me, 00:00:13.57\00:00:15.71 and happy that we have over 20 years of the history 00:00:15.74\00:00:21.23 of the Buddhist Study Center here. 00:00:21.26\00:00:23.81 Starting with Clifton Maberly, 00:00:23.84\00:00:26.52 who was, I think, the very first of the directors 00:00:26.55\00:00:30.66 of the Buddhist Study Center. 00:00:30.69\00:00:32.35 Cliff, what was it like when you first got here 00:00:32.38\00:00:34.97 and what kind of work did you do? 00:00:35.00\00:00:37.81 I was very daunted with the task 00:00:37.84\00:00:40.72 because we hadn't had one before 00:00:40.75\00:00:42.32 and we really didn't know much 00:00:42.35\00:00:45.11 about Buddhism at a high level. 00:00:45.14\00:00:47.90 So I decided to start the Center of Buddhism 00:00:47.93\00:00:52.53 next to the Buddhist University and attracted probably 00:00:52.56\00:00:56.95 50 or 60 Buddhist monks per day into the center 00:00:56.98\00:01:00.24 and we just listened and talked, 00:01:00.27\00:01:01.74 and listened and talked 00:01:01.77\00:01:03.07 and gradually began to understand 00:01:03.10\00:01:04.94 what Buddhism was at that level. 00:01:04.97\00:01:07.11 So the monks actually came to you 00:01:07.14\00:01:09.38 and you could exchange ideas and learn a lot. 00:01:09.41\00:01:13.47 They came and worked in our study center 00:01:13.50\00:01:15.55 and discussed things among themselves 00:01:15.58\00:01:18.38 and we discussed things with them as well. 00:01:18.41\00:01:21.10 How long were you here? 00:01:21.13\00:01:23.03 Seven years. 00:01:23.06\00:01:24.18 And in that time, it wasn't just in Thailand, 00:01:24.21\00:01:27.72 there were other projects in places 00:01:27.75\00:01:29.74 that you had influence there. 00:01:29.77\00:01:30.85 No, as I learned what Buddhism was at that level, 00:01:30.88\00:01:35.76 I used to do seminars and workshops 00:01:35.79\00:01:38.43 in probably 10 of the Buddhist countries, 00:01:38.46\00:01:41.84 different places here and there. 00:01:41.87\00:01:44.45 Well, next to you is Scott Griswold 00:01:44.48\00:01:47.40 who was here for some time too. 00:01:47.43\00:01:50.03 When did you come, Scott? 00:01:50.06\00:01:51.87 Came in 2002. 00:01:51.90\00:01:53.76 So you followed Cliff. 00:01:53.79\00:01:55.67 And what was the focus of your ministry 00:01:55.70\00:02:00.27 during the 10 years or so that you were here? 00:02:00.30\00:02:02.80 Well, with him working closely 00:02:02.83\00:02:04.66 with the level of Buddhist monks, 00:02:04.69\00:02:06.73 we felt a real need to work at the local level 00:02:06.76\00:02:09.45 where most of the Buddhist people are, 00:02:09.48\00:02:11.16 where they don't know as much 00:02:11.19\00:02:12.27 but they still have that background, 00:02:12.30\00:02:13.58 that's very much in their mind and it affects strongly the way 00:02:13.61\00:02:16.66 they're thinking about, 00:02:16.69\00:02:17.73 the message they're hearing, the Christian message. 00:02:17.76\00:02:19.82 So we need to try to help our church wrestle 00:02:19.85\00:02:22.51 through how do you speak to somebody 00:02:22.54\00:02:24.69 who is not from another Christian background 00:02:24.72\00:02:27.13 but somebody who's really, 00:02:27.16\00:02:28.77 has that eastern mind type of thinking. 00:02:28.80\00:02:31.29 So did some resources come out of that? 00:02:31.32\00:02:33.03 We started working on Bible studies, 00:02:33.06\00:02:34.74 on health approach, 00:02:34.77\00:02:36.19 different ways of trying to share, 00:02:36.22\00:02:37.75 and we ended up with materials like something 00:02:37.78\00:02:42.64 we call Bridge of Hope that starts 00:02:42.67\00:02:45.18 with no knowledge of God, no knowledge of the Bible 00:02:45.21\00:02:47.65 and then builds to an understanding 00:02:47.68\00:02:49.45 of the basic Bible truths. 00:02:49.48\00:02:51.37 It sounds like an approach where we're meeting somebody 00:02:51.40\00:02:54.95 where they are, which is a devout Buddhist, 00:02:54.98\00:02:57.29 but we're actually trying to carry them 00:02:57.32\00:02:59.05 through not only devoting their life to the Lord 00:02:59.08\00:03:01.49 but actually to be disciples 00:03:01.52\00:03:03.43 and there's a lot of gaps in there 00:03:03.46\00:03:06.22 from what we usually have-- create materials for. 00:03:06.25\00:03:10.50 So, where are you at now? 00:03:10.53\00:03:14.52 Back in the United States 00:03:14.55\00:03:15.78 where Buddhism continues to grow 00:03:15.81\00:03:17.71 and where people from many Buddhist countries 00:03:17.74\00:03:19.87 are moving and continuing to call people 00:03:19.90\00:03:22.48 to be involved, to think about the incredible beauty 00:03:22.51\00:03:25.98 of the Gospel of Jesus 00:03:26.01\00:03:27.52 and how it can be attractive to Buddhist people. 00:03:27.55\00:03:30.00 And now next to you is Greg Whittset, 00:03:30.03\00:03:32.80 and Greg was the one that followed you in the center. 00:03:32.83\00:03:36.70 And tell us a little about what's going on right now 00:03:36.73\00:03:39.17 with the center for East Asian religions. 00:03:39.20\00:03:41.35 Well, I have the advantage of building 00:03:41.38\00:03:43.65 on the progress of my predecessors 00:03:43.68\00:03:46.36 and I'm indebted to the lessons learned over the years. 00:03:46.39\00:03:50.84 As I kind of looked at it in my experience 00:03:50.87\00:03:53.78 and how, you know, where do you begin, 00:03:53.81\00:03:56.49 where do you add? 00:03:56.52\00:03:58.71 Came to the idea that really, maybe it's a good time 00:03:58.74\00:04:02.92 to survey where people are seeing needs are, 00:04:02.95\00:04:06.26 the leaders across the region here in Asia. 00:04:06.29\00:04:09.48 What are the issues that remain to be addressed 00:04:09.51\00:04:12.73 or that we need to continue to emphasize 00:04:12.76\00:04:14.59 if we are already, but need to keep 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.06 that at the forefront. 00:04:16.09\00:04:17.56 And so we're doing something exciting 00:04:17.59\00:04:19.44 and that we're inviting people to share their ideas 00:04:19.47\00:04:22.58 about what the issues are, 00:04:22.61\00:04:24.20 present those together in our annual conferences 00:04:24.23\00:04:26.74 and try to get more voices involved in addressing those 00:04:26.77\00:04:30.97 so that we can be more effective. 00:04:31.00\00:04:32.62 Even as we speak there's quite a group 00:04:32.65\00:04:36.03 that is gathered to have this conversation 00:04:36.06\00:04:38.66 and what's a specific emphasis this year? 00:04:38.69\00:04:41.97 Yeah, I'm very excited, 00:04:42.00\00:04:43.35 we have about a hundred leaders from across Asia here 00:04:43.38\00:04:46.79 focusing on the topic of Ministry to Mourners. 00:04:46.82\00:04:50.18 Reaching our East Asian brothers 00:04:50.21\00:04:52.45 during a time of funerals, 00:04:52.48\00:04:54.00 of grieving over the death of loved ones. 00:04:54.03\00:04:56.62 And this is actually perhaps the most important ceremony 00:04:56.65\00:05:02.37 or ritual in the Eastern religions. 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.86 It could be compared to Christian baptism, 00:05:05.89\00:05:08.96 so, but of course 00:05:08.99\00:05:10.39 it's a universal human issue, death 00:05:10.42\00:05:12.71 and then how do we deal with our differences 00:05:12.74\00:05:14.22 and minister to people. 00:05:14.25\00:05:15.28 Often times it's one of those key moments 00:05:15.31\00:05:19.13 where a person's heart may be open and if we, 00:05:19.16\00:05:23.36 if we can be appropriate 00:05:23.39\00:05:26.90 in how we respond to their grief, 00:05:26.93\00:05:28.94 we may be able to help them. 00:05:28.97\00:05:30.00 Exactly, that's right. 00:05:30.03\00:05:32.77 One question for each of you. 00:05:32.80\00:05:35.53 As you look forward now, what would your prayer be, 00:05:35.56\00:05:40.61 your hope for ministry over the next few years, 00:05:40.64\00:05:45.76 months and years? 00:05:45.79\00:05:48.01 Well, the fact that we're all three here shows 00:05:48.04\00:05:52.24 that we really need to continue to engage all people 00:05:52.27\00:05:59.09 who have a burden, to share Christ 00:05:59.12\00:06:01.95 with our East Asian brothers and sisters and so, 00:06:01.98\00:06:04.72 what I see in the future is a greater unity, 00:06:04.75\00:06:07.23 working together and realizing that the problem 00:06:07.26\00:06:09.23 is bigger than any one of us-- 00:06:09.26\00:06:10.60 we need to pull together. 00:06:10.63\00:06:13.80 Spending time looking at how to word our message 00:06:13.83\00:06:16.38 for Buddhist people has made that message 00:06:16.41\00:06:18.92 that we have come alive so much more to me. 00:06:18.95\00:06:21.87 And so it's my hope that as the church 00:06:21.90\00:06:24.69 continues to look at their neighbors 00:06:24.72\00:06:26.27 and figure out ways to reach out to them, 00:06:26.30\00:06:28.57 that they will find and experience a deep revival 00:06:28.60\00:06:31.53 of their walk with God and their understanding 00:06:31.56\00:06:34.02 and be able to share it powerfully 00:06:34.05\00:06:35.88 until it's finished. 00:06:35.91\00:06:39.31 I moved to Korea in order to be able to help them 00:06:39.34\00:06:44.12 reach out to Buddhists, 00:06:44.15\00:06:45.76 but they didn't and haven't. 00:06:45.79\00:06:49.09 And I put my spurs up on the hook 00:06:49.12\00:06:52.81 and haven't really thought much about 00:06:52.84\00:06:54.34 Buddhism for quite a while, 00:06:54.37\00:06:56.22 just preparing Koreans to be missionaries. 00:06:56.25\00:06:58.37 But Greg is dragging me back into this world 00:06:58.40\00:07:01.55 even though I'm off to Egypt now to get to be familiar 00:07:01.58\00:07:04.87 with Coptic Christians and Muslims. 00:07:04.90\00:07:08.73 I don't think he's gonna let me go, 00:07:08.76\00:07:10.45 so he's still gonna squeeze everything at me 00:07:10.48\00:07:13.27 that he can get so. 00:07:13.30\00:07:14.91 I think he's the one that we gonna look to 00:07:14.94\00:07:17.64 for the future of this project. 00:07:17.67\00:07:20.49 Gentlemen, Cliff, Scot, and Greg, 00:07:20.52\00:07:23.12 thank you so much for joining us, 00:07:23.15\00:07:24.89 really appreciate your time. 00:07:24.92\00:07:26.48 Gary, back to you. 00:07:26.51\00:07:28.58 Religious liberty is something 00:07:28.61\00:07:30.06 that's easy to take for granted, 00:07:30.09\00:07:32.30 but in many parts of the world it doesn't even exist. 00:07:32.33\00:07:35.58 Religious liberty is a fundamental human right 00:07:35.61\00:07:38.70 and it's something that is worth fighting for. 00:07:38.73\00:07:41.58 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:07:53.46\00:07:55.57 has an active missionary presence 00:07:55.60\00:07:57.37 in over 200 countries and territories. 00:07:57.40\00:08:02.25 But around the world religious hatred 00:08:02.28\00:08:05.78 exposes itself in countless ways. 00:08:05.81\00:08:09.04 If anyone says I love God 00:08:16.98\00:08:20.32 yet hates his brother, he is a liar. 00:08:20.35\00:08:23.87 For anyone who does not love his brother 00:08:23.90\00:08:26.08 whom he has seen, cannot love God 00:08:26.11\00:08:29.67 whom he has not seen. 00:08:29.70\00:08:33.05 Unfortunately, men never do evil 00:08:33.08\00:08:36.04 so completely and cheerfully 00:08:36.07\00:08:38.40 as when they do it from religious conviction. 00:08:38.43\00:08:43.38 But we hold true that religious liberty is a God given right, 00:08:43.41\00:08:47.72 the end of law is not to abolish or restrain 00:08:47.75\00:08:50.73 but to preserve and enlarge freedom. 00:08:50.76\00:08:53.36 For in all the states of created beings 00:08:53.39\00:08:55.36 capable of law, 00:08:55.39\00:08:56.84 where there is no law there is no freedom. 00:08:56.87\00:09:00.39 We believe in the natural and inalienable right 00:09:00.42\00:09:03.62 of freedom of conscience, 00:09:03.65\00:09:05.29 to have or not to have a religion. 00:09:05.32\00:09:08.06 To adopt the religion or belief of one's choice. 00:09:08.09\00:09:11.34 To change religious belief according to conscience 00:09:11.37\00:09:13.99 and to manifest one's religion individually 00:09:14.02\00:09:16.85 or in community with others. 00:09:16.88\00:09:19.56 Nevertheless, it's evident that freedom of religion 00:09:19.59\00:09:22.98 is increasingly under attack around the world, 00:09:23.01\00:09:26.31 diminishing our ability to pray, worship, 00:09:26.34\00:09:29.28 and share the love of Christ with others. 00:09:29.31\00:09:32.11 We sometimes see religion twisted in an attempt 00:09:32.14\00:09:35.20 to justify hatred and persecution 00:09:35.23\00:09:37.30 against other people 00:09:37.33\00:09:38.58 just because of who they are or how they pray. 00:09:38.61\00:09:41.73 But to harm anyone in the name of faith 00:09:41.76\00:09:44.84 is to diminish our own relationship with God. 00:09:44.87\00:09:50.80 Every faith is a candle we light in the public domain. 00:09:50.83\00:09:54.82 A little light drives away much darkness 00:09:54.85\00:09:57.90 and no one else's candle diminishes mine. 00:09:57.93\00:10:00.68 But if we all light our candles together, 00:10:00.71\00:10:03.54 we can turn a dark world into one full of light 00:10:03.57\00:10:07.23 and that is why working together 00:10:07.26\00:10:09.26 for the cause of religious liberty 00:10:09.29\00:10:11.34 is so fundamental and so precious. 00:10:11.37\00:10:16.51 In support of our efforts to defend religious liberty 00:10:16.54\00:10:19.19 for all people around the world, 00:10:19.22\00:10:21.35 we ask that you pray, that you write, 00:10:21.38\00:10:24.69 and that you rally because the world is a dangerous place 00:10:24.72\00:10:29.04 not because of those who do evil 00:10:29.07\00:10:31.46 but because if those look on and do nothing. 00:10:31.49\00:10:35.42 Well, thank you so much for joining us today 00:10:49.99\00:10:51.72 on "Global Mission Snapshots" 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.47 coming to you from the beautiful city 00:10:53.50\00:10:55.55 of Annapolis here in Maryland. 00:10:55.58\00:10:57.92 Please continue to pray for mission around the world. 00:10:57.95\00:11:00.76 Pray for the people and the places 00:11:00.79\00:11:02.53 that you see on this program. 00:11:02.56\00:11:04.39 Front line mission work can be exciting, 00:11:04.42\00:11:06.84 it can be invigorating but it can also be lonely 00:11:06.87\00:11:09.44 and at times even discouraging. 00:11:09.47\00:11:12.09 So it's encouraging to know 00:11:12.12\00:11:13.52 that there is a world church praying for you. 00:11:13.55\00:11:16.32 Before we go I'd like to offer you 00:11:16.35\00:11:17.89 the free Global Mission calendar. 00:11:17.92\00:11:20.50 This calendar is full of wonderful mission images 00:11:20.53\00:11:23.27 from around the world, 00:11:23.30\00:11:24.58 and it's a terrific reminder to pray for mission each day. 00:11:24.61\00:11:29.55 Well, that's it for today's program. 00:11:29.58\00:11:31.08 I am Gary Krause for Global Mission. 00:11:31.11\00:11:33.14 And I hope that you can join me next time 00:11:33.17\00:11:35.26 here on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:11:35.29\00:11:37.60
