A summer mission program in Jordan. 00:00:04.97\00:00:07.05 The importance of religious liberty. 00:00:07.08\00:00:09.60 East Asian religions and a young doctor 00:00:09.63\00:00:12.13 working in Nepal. 00:00:12.16\00:00:13.55 That and a lot more coming up next, 00:00:13.58\00:00:15.89 right here, on this program. 00:00:15.92\00:00:17.36 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:21.64\00:00:24.17 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:24.20\00:00:27.11 He gave us a mission. 00:00:27.14\00:00:29.80 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:29.83\00:00:34.66 telling them of His love." 00:00:34.69\00:00:37.20 This is our mission. This is our global mission. 00:00:37.23\00:00:41.12 Hello, and welcome to the program. 00:00:46.26\00:00:47.73 Coming to you today, 00:00:47.76\00:00:49.03 from Annapolis, Maryland in the United States. 00:00:49.06\00:00:51.87 Here at the waterfront there is this statue of Alex Haley, 00:00:51.90\00:00:55.34 a famous American author who wrote the book "Roots," 00:00:55.37\00:00:58.58 and in this book he goes back through his family history, 00:00:58.61\00:01:02.03 way, way back to a slave ship 00:01:02.06\00:01:04.11 that landed not too far from here. 00:01:04.14\00:01:06.59 And on that ship, was an African man 00:01:06.62\00:01:09.24 who was sold as a slave. 00:01:09.27\00:01:11.54 The themes in that book are of freedom, of family, 00:01:11.57\00:01:15.29 of history, will be explored in today's program 00:01:15.32\00:01:18.03 as we look at the importance of religious liberty. 00:01:18.06\00:01:20.86 As we look at how can we build bridges 00:01:20.89\00:01:22.97 to people of other religious traditions. 00:01:23.00\00:01:25.86 But first up, let's travel to Nepal 00:01:25.89\00:01:28.31 and visit the young Adventist doctor. 00:01:28.34\00:01:30.76 My name is Bradley Cacho. 00:01:37.71\00:01:39.56 I'm a fourth-year medical student 00:01:39.59\00:01:40.99 at Loma Linda University School of Medicine 00:01:41.02\00:01:44.67 and I'm here for a month long rotation in Nepal. 00:01:44.70\00:01:48.34 One of the draws about Loma Linda University 00:01:52.57\00:01:55.67 and one of the reasons why I came there 00:01:55.70\00:01:57.43 for medical school was the possibility to do 00:01:57.46\00:01:59.82 mission work and they have a long list 00:01:59.85\00:02:03.76 of different countries where Loma Linda, 00:02:03.79\00:02:06.21 they have hospitals that they are affiliated with 00:02:06.24\00:02:09.28 all over the world and so two friends and myself, 00:02:09.31\00:02:13.51 we knew we wanted to go on a trip 00:02:13.54\00:02:16.80 before the year had ended, before we graduated, 00:02:16.83\00:02:19.14 so we went through the list and we saw Nepal 00:02:19.17\00:02:21.36 and all I knew was that Nepal was North of India 00:02:21.39\00:02:26.48 and it was where Mount Everest was. 00:02:26.51\00:02:30.48 You can see the religion permeating through 00:02:30.51\00:02:33.85 the culture here in Nepal. 00:02:33.88\00:02:36.04 Where it, it influences the kind of dress 00:02:36.07\00:02:38.18 that the people wear, 00:02:38.21\00:02:39.84 what they put around their eyes, 00:02:39.87\00:02:41.76 they have eyeliners that help ward 00:02:41.79\00:02:43.13 against evil spirits, that sort of thing. 00:02:43.16\00:02:44.57 And there are temples everywhere 00:02:44.60\00:02:47.04 and shrines everywhere of the different Hindu gods. 00:02:47.07\00:02:48.86 Oh, it was definitely a growing experience. 00:02:56.60\00:02:59.43 I feel like every hurdle that we experience on our trip 00:02:59.46\00:03:03.16 and every new experience that we have here, 00:03:03.19\00:03:06.17 it helps me and the rest of my friends to grow, 00:03:06.20\00:03:09.63 not only as a person but as a physician and as a Christian. 00:03:09.66\00:03:13.83 I would say that the best thing that ever happened to me 00:03:19.49\00:03:23.42 on this trip was, we had the opportunity 00:03:23.45\00:03:26.40 to go camping for the weekend with the Pathfinders 00:03:26.43\00:03:30.74 and the couple months leading up to this trip, 00:03:30.77\00:03:35.05 I had been feeling kind of stagnant 00:03:35.08\00:03:37.40 in my Christian walk, you know, I do the lesson study, 00:03:37.43\00:03:41.80 I try to do it diligently but I hadn't really had 00:03:41.83\00:03:44.71 a lot of opportunity to share that so coming to this trip, 00:03:44.74\00:03:50.47 initially it was hard because we were in the medical setting 00:03:50.50\00:03:54.37 and we didn't have a lot evangelistic type 00:03:54.40\00:03:58.01 things going on but when it came 00:03:58.04\00:03:59.80 to the Pathfinder camping trip 00:03:59.83\00:04:02.35 that we had the opportunity to be a part of it, 00:04:02.38\00:04:05.82 it really helped us realize the reasons 00:04:05.85\00:04:09.27 that we come and do missions. 00:04:09.30\00:04:11.73 And you know, part of it is the medical aspect, sure, 00:04:11.76\00:04:14.65 but even more so it's the relationships 00:04:14.68\00:04:16.92 that we make with the people here. 00:04:16.95\00:04:18.53 And you know, they see how Christians, 00:04:18.56\00:04:21.03 how Adventist Christians are in America 00:04:21.06\00:04:23.43 and they really look up to us here. 00:04:23.46\00:04:25.09 The children, they look up to us 00:04:25.12\00:04:27.69 and it's a really big responsibility 00:04:27.72\00:04:32.04 that I am glad that we were able to have 00:04:32.07\00:04:37.26 because it really helped each of us grow as Christians. 00:04:37.29\00:04:41.27 I've seen Jesus in numerous aspects of this trip. 00:04:48.96\00:04:53.09 These people, they rely on prayers so much, 00:04:53.12\00:04:56.39 it's part of their being. 00:04:56.42\00:04:58.32 Here they rely on God so much real-- 00:04:58.35\00:04:59.95 and it just really impressed me to try 00:04:59.98\00:05:02.50 and do the same when I go back home. 00:05:02.53\00:05:04.22 If I had to tell people about Nepal, 00:05:08.87\00:05:11.19 first off, I would say you need to go to Nepal. 00:05:11.22\00:05:15.55 You definitely need to visit Nepal 00:05:15.58\00:05:17.15 because it's one of the most beautiful countries 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.82 I've ever visited and the people are 00:05:19.85\00:05:21.48 some of the nicest people I've ever met. 00:05:21.51\00:05:23.44 I got to meet all sorts of people, 00:05:23.47\00:05:26.06 I got to be immersed in a whole new culture 00:05:26.09\00:05:28.85 that I was previously ignorant of 00:05:28.88\00:05:31.92 so in that regard it was a great experience. 00:05:31.95\00:05:36.90 It's been awesome. 00:05:36.93\00:05:40.20 I would just want the world church 00:05:40.23\00:05:42.51 to pray for the leaders and for the people 00:05:42.54\00:05:45.91 to keep on enduring and to keep the faith, 00:05:45.94\00:05:49.36 and to be able to share what's so great 00:05:49.39\00:05:52.42 about the Gospel with the people of Nepal. 00:05:52.45\00:05:54.84 My guest is my friend and colleague, Anees Abdelnour. 00:06:10.58\00:06:13.88 Anees, thanks for joining us 00:06:13.91\00:06:15.65 and Anees, you work in the Treasury Department 00:06:15.68\00:06:18.34 of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:06:18.37\00:06:20.87 But where are you from originally? 00:06:20.90\00:06:22.75 I come from the country of Jordan 00:06:22.78\00:06:25.12 in the Middle East. 00:06:25.15\00:06:26.70 Jordan, now that's a fabulous country. 00:06:26.73\00:06:28.60 How long have you been away from there? 00:06:28.63\00:06:31.66 I have been away from Jordan for almost 40 years. 00:06:31.69\00:06:35.49 Wow, but Jordan is still, it still has 00:06:35.52\00:06:39.28 a very special place in your heart. 00:06:39.31\00:06:41.49 Jordan, it carries a special place in my heart 00:06:41.52\00:06:44.77 and I would always like to go back and visit. 00:06:44.80\00:06:47.27 Yeah, and recently you did that and you were involved 00:06:47.30\00:06:50.38 in a mission project back in your homeland 00:06:50.41\00:06:53.56 that was actually funded through mission offerings 00:06:53.59\00:06:56.27 given by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:06:56.30\00:06:58.26 Tell us about that project. 00:06:58.29\00:06:59.92 Yes, absolutely. 00:06:59.95\00:07:01.57 I connected with elder Homer Trecartin 00:07:01.60\00:07:06.06 from the Middle East Union and he connected me 00:07:06.09\00:07:09.68 with the East Mediterranean field 00:07:09.71\00:07:12.15 and the Walkers, the youth pastor in Jordan 00:07:12.18\00:07:16.92 and we arranged several projects which were focused 00:07:16.95\00:07:23.41 on community service, outreach, and building relationships 00:07:23.44\00:07:28.71 utilizing the youth and the country of Jordan. 00:07:28.74\00:07:32.47 Wonderful, now we don't have 00:07:32.50\00:07:34.52 many Seventh-day Adventist members in Jordan. 00:07:34.55\00:07:36.62 How many would we have? 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.34 I would say about 250 people. 00:07:38.37\00:07:41.38 250 people in a population of? 00:07:41.41\00:07:44.64 Almost six million, if I'm correct. 00:07:44.67\00:07:46.84 Yes, yes and so what you have here 00:07:46.87\00:07:49.37 is a group of Adventist young people involved in service. 00:07:49.40\00:07:53.53 Describe the sort of things that they did. 00:07:53.56\00:07:56.03 What we did, we first distributed food supplies 00:07:56.06\00:08:01.25 in three large cities in Jordan, 00:08:01.28\00:08:04.38 Irbid, Zarqa and Madaba, near Mount Nebo. 00:08:04.41\00:08:08.85 And what we did-- we went door-to-door to, 00:08:08.88\00:08:13.70 in poor neighborhoods and we passed food supplies 00:08:13.73\00:08:18.79 and most of the people we have distributed food to 00:08:18.82\00:08:24.07 were Syrian refugees who live in Jordan. 00:08:24.10\00:08:27.39 Oh, they'd come across the border? 00:08:27.42\00:08:29.40 Yes, exactly, and they absolutely own nothing. 00:08:29.43\00:08:33.22 Some of them sleep on the floor and everything they need, 00:08:33.25\00:08:38.88 they are dependent on others for survival. 00:08:38.91\00:08:42.67 And what sort of response did you get? 00:08:42.70\00:08:45.94 It was highly accepted and very much appreciated. 00:08:45.97\00:08:50.44 As we went to these homes, we prayed with each family, 00:08:50.47\00:08:55.93 and they thanks-- and they knew that 00:08:55.96\00:08:59.04 we came from the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:08:59.07\00:09:02.03 and, but they accepted it very kindly. 00:09:02.06\00:09:05.65 How did it effect the young people 00:09:05.68\00:09:07.39 who were involved in the project? 00:09:07.42\00:09:09.56 It really has motivated them because, really, 00:09:09.59\00:09:12.07 this is the first mission project of this type 00:09:12.10\00:09:17.01 in the country of Jordan. 00:09:17.04\00:09:19.26 And they said we would love to do it 00:09:19.29\00:09:22.15 and we would love to even do it more 00:09:22.18\00:09:24.78 in the future on an annual basis, 00:09:24.81\00:09:27.60 on a larger scale and also add more features to it. 00:09:27.63\00:09:33.26 So there was going door-to-door helping the Syrian refugees, 00:09:33.29\00:09:38.67 were there any other aspects of the project? 00:09:38.70\00:09:40.66 There were other aspects. 00:09:40.69\00:09:43.17 We visited a center for disabled children. 00:09:43.20\00:09:49.36 And so the youth and some of our children 00:09:49.39\00:09:53.69 of the church in Jordan, joined us 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.77 and we went to the center. 00:09:56.80\00:09:58.84 We distributed blankets and other supplies 00:09:58.87\00:10:02.77 to the children who reside at the center. 00:10:02.80\00:10:06.55 And the Adventist Church leaders in Jordan, 00:10:06.58\00:10:10.01 when they saw what happened with the project, 00:10:10.04\00:10:12.42 how did they respond? 00:10:12.45\00:10:14.41 They really appreciated us very much 00:10:14.44\00:10:16.61 and they said we need this type of outreach in Jordan 00:10:16.64\00:10:21.78 so it will help, you know, have the membership grow 00:10:21.81\00:10:26.46 in Jordan in future years because here 00:10:26.49\00:10:28.99 we are doing things to help the population of Jordan. 00:10:29.02\00:10:33.10 Show me a picture, I think you have some pictures here. 00:10:33.13\00:10:35.25 Yeah, absolutely. 00:10:35.28\00:10:36.52 I'll show you a few pictures what of we did in Jordan. 00:10:36.55\00:10:40.70 Some of the Center children, 00:10:40.73\00:10:43.64 the disabled children that we have helped. 00:10:43.67\00:10:46.03 Now who are the people in the blue shirts? 00:10:46.06\00:10:47.94 Okay, these are the disabled children 00:10:47.97\00:10:50.49 who reside at the center. 00:10:50.52\00:10:52.67 And this is the youth pastor in Jordan 00:10:52.70\00:10:55.16 and his wife and this is me. 00:10:55.19\00:10:57.58 And this is also another person who is not an Adventist, 00:10:57.61\00:11:03.32 who has organization, help donate some blankets. 00:11:03.35\00:11:06.74 Ah, very nice. 00:11:06.77\00:11:07.80 For the church in Jordan to pass to people there. 00:11:07.83\00:11:10.84 Okay. 00:11:10.87\00:11:11.92 And some more of this, and we have other picture 00:11:11.95\00:11:17.60 with the center founder and general manager 00:11:17.63\00:11:21.16 and the reason he founded the center 00:11:21.19\00:11:24.87 because at an early age his child became disabled. 00:11:24.90\00:11:29.91 So it was on his heart to found the center 00:11:29.94\00:11:33.32 and he is the one who invited us to come back, 00:11:33.35\00:11:36.94 for, not only for financial support, 00:11:36.97\00:11:39.21 but for moral support. 00:11:39.24\00:11:40.69 - Wonderful. - Definitely. 00:11:40.72\00:11:42.39 Anees, I know that you traveled over there at your own expense. 00:11:42.42\00:11:46.32 How did it affect you being involved in this project? 00:11:46.35\00:11:51.24 It really impacted me a lot. 00:11:51.27\00:11:55.68 It, you know, I always have interest, 00:11:55.71\00:11:59.16 I always had interest in doing mission work 00:11:59.19\00:12:02.50 because that's how I grew up. 00:12:02.53\00:12:03.99 That's how my mother trained me and my brothers and sisters. 00:12:04.02\00:12:07.78 But you know, another reason that impacted my passion 00:12:07.81\00:12:14.63 to our mission is the Urban Mission Conference 00:12:14.66\00:12:19.01 that was held at the General Conference 00:12:19.04\00:12:20.99 about a year ago, had even motivated me more to go. 00:12:21.02\00:12:24.85 To the point where, I don't mind doing 00:12:24.88\00:12:27.88 this type of mission project every year 00:12:27.91\00:12:31.57 and use my vacation time to be of service 00:12:31.60\00:12:36.17 to humanity and to the Lord. 00:12:36.20\00:12:37.85 Fantastic. 00:12:37.88\00:12:39.47 Anees, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:12:39.50\00:12:42.38 And viewers at home, find opportunities 00:12:42.41\00:12:45.63 where you too can get involved just like Anees. 00:12:45.66\00:12:48.72 Don't go away, we'll be right back, 00:12:48.75\00:12:50.32 right after this break. 00:12:50.35\00:12:51.46
