00:01 Welcome back.
00:02 My guest is Ricky Oliveras who is a video producer 00:04 with the office of Adventist Mission. 00:06 Ricky, glad you can join us. 00:07 Thank you. 00:08 Ricky, you have in your hand a camera, 00:10 this is where you spend lot of your time behind this camera. 00:13 Now you travel the world getting mission stories 00:16 and in some ways your job 00:17 is the envy of some of your friends, 00:20 but on the other edge you sometimes have few challenges. 00:22 What would be perhaps as you look back one of them 00:25 more challenging experiences you had behind the camera? 00:28 Well, first I have to say 00:29 am I be the envy of some of my friends 00:32 but it's not as luxurious as you might think. 00:34 There are a lot of challenges, 00:36 mental, spiritual and physical challenges 00:39 and one of those physical challenges 00:42 that I remember being in the Democratic Republic of Congo 00:45 and there was a landslide 00:48 in the road we were supposed to cross. 00:50 We got out of the plane, got into a tuck 00:52 and there is backed up traffic for miles and miles. 00:55 So we had to get out of the truck 00:57 hike five or six kilometers I think 01:00 and we had to pay a girl about five dollars 01:03 to carry our suitcases on her head. 01:05 I got to say you paid a girl to carry your suitcases? 01:07 Yes. Okay, move on quickly. 01:09 I'm not ashamed of that either, because she was very strong 01:14 and it was an incredible experience. 01:17 It was a very difficult because obliviously 01:20 hiking through the mud made-- 01:22 my feet were flap flap, flap, 01:24 through the mud for five or six kilometers, 01:27 dogging through trucks that had overturned 01:29 and even it started raining in some spots 01:33 but that was, that was a challenge 01:34 and to get to the other end was ablessing 01:38 and we are able to film some amazing things 01:41 on the other side so it's was great. 01:43 Now that's it of course 01:44 is one of the world's poorest countries, 01:45 you must have seen some 01:47 fairly horrible sites I imagine? 01:49 Yeah, it was it was incredible in a interesting way, 01:55 because it was very humblingz to see 01:58 how people were living there. 01:59 We sometimes we think 02:01 that we are in an unfortunate situation 02:04 but then you just have to over there to really see 02:07 what unfortunate can be, its very humbling. 02:11 Now Ricky, you put together small video showing 02:14 what it's like to be behind the scenes producing a video, 02:17 let's have a look at that now. 02:18 Okay. 02:38 On a typical video trip the odds that things 02:40 will fall perfectly into place is very slim. 02:44 There are usually unexpected road bumps along the way. 02:47 For starters, I was faced with the challenges of keeping 02:50 my batteries charged, my files safely stored 02:54 and I had to limit the weight of my equipment 02:56 and that was just the beginning. 02:59 We had a broken down vehicle and bad weather. 03:02 And when those kind of things happen, 03:04 it can be hard to find patience. 03:06 Then I thought about how these are probably 03:09 every day experiences for the people who live here. 03:13 These small inconveniences 03:15 are probably a normal part of their lives. 03:17 And they weren't annoyed or impatient. 03:20 They were smiling and parsing God. 03:23 That kind of put in my place for the rest of the trip. 03:27 God was in control through good and bad, 03:29 He provided us with some wonderful opportunities 03:32 to connect with our brothers and sisters 03:35 from around the world. 03:37 Although I was able to film some amazing things, 03:40 no camera is capable of capturing how good God is. 03:48 When I got off the boat on a small island in Raja Ampat 03:53 I was overwhelmed with the greeting we received. 03:56 We were greeted with beautiful singing 03:58 as we made our way toward the islands church. 04:12 As I entered the church in Raja Ampat 04:15 I felt strangely at home. 04:20 The ground was made of sand, their language is foreign 04:24 and there is even a snake hanging from the rafters, 04:27 but I knew that I was with family who I never met before. 04:33 And to think just 50 years ago 04:36 this region was home to cannibalistic tribes. 04:40 Even though I couldn't comprehend 04:41 although gospel message made it all the way out here. 04:44 I was glad it did. 04:47 Despite God's presence on this island 04:49 there are thousands of unreached people 04:51 in West Papua and all around the world. 04:54 Our mission still carries on until Jesus comes again. 05:03 So Ricky, you had a fabulous experience 05:05 on that trip I believe. 05:06 It was amazing, one of, 05:08 one of my favorite trips I have taken so far. 05:10 Yeah, and did you 05:12 meet any of the Global Mission pioneers working there? 05:14 Yeah, we met some church planters 05:16 while we were over there and it was amazing to see 05:19 'cause there-- there were no Adventist to start with. 05:22 It was just a completely un-entered area 05:24 and it was amazing to see how people can make 05:27 such an impact in their community 05:29 and raise a congregation of believers there. 05:31 Now Ricky, when you're out there 05:33 you are usually by yourself, 05:35 so you got to care for doing interviews, 05:38 camera, audios, lighting, everything. 05:41 Do you have horror stories of when you forgotten 05:43 to record to say or anything like that? 05:45 Oh, yeah, I-- probably 05:47 I shouldn't talk about those too much 05:48 but it's definitely happened once or twice. 05:51 I have-- I have gone 05:53 and forgot a memory card sometime, 05:54 I had to run back to the car, forgot batteries you know, 05:58 it happens all the time just because there are 06:00 so many things to think about 06:02 and then you're trying to focus on the story 06:04 that you're trying to convey and hope that this story 06:06 will bless people that you're showing it to 06:08 and so there are million things running through your head 06:11 as you're preparing for a trip, as you're on the trip, 06:13 even when you get back. 06:15 You look over your notes and its-- 06:16 there's a lot to think about its true. 06:18 Yeah, and if we were professional organization 06:22 with unlimited money, 06:23 that be four of you going but it just the one. 06:25 At least. 06:26 But we make it happen 06:28 with a usually just one person going 06:30 and its not due to us its because God allows us 06:34 to do that really, 06:35 otherwise there's really, no other way to do that. 06:37 Wonderful. 06:38 Ricky, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 06:42 Next stop we visit some path finders 06:44 who are making a difference in the community. 06:57 Okay, we are here loading buses 06:59 to go on the community service projects. 07:01 This is our face in the community 07:03 where people see that what path finding is all about 07:05 and that is serving people, 07:08 serving communities in Christ name. 07:11 And so we are loading about 27 buses 07:15 on this side about 10 or 12 on the other side. 07:23 How I feel about going out and doing community service 07:25 is really hopeful because you get to help people 07:29 and you get to see the smile on their faces, 07:31 when you help them and I thinks that's really 07:33 important to me and I like that. 07:36 Well, this morning we are expecting about 07:38 8,000 path finders to be out there serving communities. 07:42 And Jesus came not to be served 07:44 but to serve and that is our Christian duty 07:47 and responsibility serving others 07:49 and our youth are involved and engaged 07:52 doing just that, serving people in Christ's name. 07:56 Path finders from all over the world 07:58 join together to serve the local communities 08:01 around Oshkosh, Wisconsin. 08:03 Adventist community services led the efforts 08:06 by organizing service opportunities 08:08 among various projects in the area. 08:11 The campery hosted about 40, 000 pathfinders, 08:15 and had about 8,000 voluntaries spots. 08:18 So the opportunities where in high demand 08:20 even when things got a little chaotic 08:23 the pathfinders lived up to their reputation. 08:26 You know, they really have been pretty patience. 08:29 It gets a little hectic when we load the buses, 08:32 we had a couple of projects had to cancel 08:34 for various reasons 08:36 and the pathfinders have been so understanding, 08:40 you know, on that side they been awesome as far as-- 08:44 you know, saying hey, we're glad to help 08:47 if we can, that's fine but the Lord will work it out. 08:52 Volunteers worked in gardens, 08:54 painted fences, moved rocks 08:56 and brought joy to the people they served. 08:59 Even thought the work was hard 09:00 the pathfinders kept a good attitude 09:03 and did a great job. 09:05 All the leaders that I have talked to other projects 09:07 have told me, what a wonderful job 09:09 that our young people, our pathfinders are doing. 09:11 So it makes us proud, 09:12 you know, we are glad that they are able to go out 09:14 make an impression in the community 09:17 and show people that what Christian love 09:20 and this interested benevolence is all about. 09:23 You know, they worked hard, 09:25 its hard to work, I was out yesterday 09:26 they are doing hard work but they're loving it. 09:30 And they are just coming back all excited and pumped 09:33 that they can do this for Jesus. 09:36 Back at the camp pathfinders were given the chance 09:39 to complete the community service course 09:41 and earn an honor batch. 09:43 Hundred's of people took advantage 09:44 of this opportunity to learn more about 09:47 what it means to serve your community. 09:49 You know, John Milton once said, 09:51 the end of all learning is to know God 09:54 and out of that knowledge we love and imitate Him. 09:58 And we are not just learning about Jesus 10:00 but we are at being, you know, His messenger, 10:03 His ambassadors as a change agent 10:06 and the difference makers. 10:07 So not only we talk and study and pray about our belief 10:12 but now we have put that belief in action 10:15 and compassion and action. 10:17 It's a awesome opportunity for our use to involve 10:20 and experience what is like true Christianity, 10:24 you know, in you can touch and feel and smell. 10:27 And so it is really a great opportunity. 10:31 Thank you so much for joining us today 10:32 on Global Mission Snapshots 10:34 and I hope that you have been inspired 10:36 and challenged about what you have seen and heard. 10:39 From radio waves in Nepal 10:41 to pathfinders with enthusiasm 10:44 making a difference in their local communities, 10:46 the light of God's love is being show 10:48 in tangible ways around the globe. 10:52 Please remember to pray for the people 10:54 and places that you see on this program. 10:56 Frontline mission work can be very exciting, 10:59 it can be challenging but it can be discouraging 11:02 and at times it can very lonely 11:03 and so encouraging for frontline workers 11:06 to know that there is a world church praying for them. 11:10 So specifically pray for Global Mission pioneers 11:14 planting new congregations. 11:16 Before we go I would like to make you a special offer, 11:19 the Global Mission calendar is filled with faces of mission 11:22 from around the world 11:23 and it's a daily reminder to pray for people 11:27 who need to know about the love of Jesus Christ. 11:30 So if you live in North America 11:32 please phone now or you can go to our website 11:34 and ask for you free Global Mission calendar. 11:38 Well, that's it for today's program, 11:39 I'm Gary Krause for Global Mission 11:41 and I hope you can join me next time 11:43 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. |
