Welcome back. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 My guest is Ricky Oliveras who is a video producer 00:00:02.12\00:00:04.35 with the office of Adventist Mission. 00:00:04.38\00:00:06.17 Ricky, glad you can join us. 00:00:06.20\00:00:07.40 Thank you. 00:00:07.43\00:00:08.46 Ricky, you have in your hand a camera, 00:00:08.49\00:00:10.25 this is where you spend lot of your time behind this camera. 00:00:10.28\00:00:13.47 Now you travel the world getting mission stories 00:00:13.50\00:00:16.06 and in some ways your job 00:00:16.09\00:00:17.93 is the envy of some of your friends, 00:00:17.96\00:00:20.20 but on the other edge you sometimes have few challenges. 00:00:20.23\00:00:22.53 What would be perhaps as you look back one of them 00:00:22.56\00:00:25.12 more challenging experiences you had behind the camera? 00:00:25.15\00:00:28.20 Well, first I have to say 00:00:28.23\00:00:29.85 am I be the envy of some of my friends 00:00:29.88\00:00:32.15 but it's not as luxurious as you might think. 00:00:32.18\00:00:34.96 There are a lot of challenges, 00:00:34.99\00:00:36.62 mental, spiritual and physical challenges 00:00:36.65\00:00:39.96 and one of those physical challenges 00:00:39.99\00:00:42.03 that I remember being in the Democratic Republic of Congo 00:00:42.06\00:00:45.89 and there was a landslide 00:00:45.92\00:00:48.65 in the road we were supposed to cross. 00:00:48.68\00:00:50.39 We got out of the plane, got into a tuck 00:00:50.42\00:00:52.29 and there is backed up traffic for miles and miles. 00:00:52.32\00:00:55.30 So we had to get out of the truck 00:00:55.33\00:00:57.48 hike five or six kilometers I think 00:00:57.51\00:01:00.18 and we had to pay a girl about five dollars 00:01:00.21\00:01:03.01 to carry our suitcases on her head. 00:01:03.04\00:01:05.39 I got to say you paid a girl to carry your suitcases? 00:01:05.42\00:01:07.87 Yes. Okay, move on quickly. 00:01:07.90\00:01:09.70 I'm not ashamed of that either, because she was very strong 00:01:09.73\00:01:14.67 and it was an incredible experience. 00:01:14.70\00:01:17.19 It was a very difficult because obliviously 00:01:17.22\00:01:20.60 hiking through the mud made-- 00:01:20.63\00:01:22.38 my feet were flap flap, flap, 00:01:22.41\00:01:24.25 through the mud for five or six kilometers, 00:01:24.28\00:01:27.36 dogging through trucks that had overturned 00:01:27.39\00:01:29.72 and even it started raining in some spots 00:01:29.75\00:01:33.01 but that was, that was a challenge 00:01:33.04\00:01:34.62 and to get to the other end was ablessing 00:01:34.65\00:01:38.89 and we are able to film some amazing things 00:01:38.92\00:01:41.44 on the other side so it's was great. 00:01:41.47\00:01:43.54 Now that's it of course 00:01:43.57\00:01:44.61 is one of the world's poorest countries, 00:01:44.64\00:01:45.95 you must have seen some 00:01:45.98\00:01:47.65 fairly horrible sites I imagine? 00:01:47.68\00:01:49.45 Yeah, it was it was incredible in a interesting way, 00:01:49.48\00:01:55.72 because it was very humblingz to see 00:01:55.75\00:01:58.07 how people were living there. 00:01:58.10\00:01:59.96 We sometimes we think 00:01:59.99\00:02:01.95 that we are in an unfortunate situation 00:02:01.98\00:02:04.43 but then you just have to over there to really see 00:02:04.46\00:02:07.17 what unfortunate can be, its very humbling. 00:02:07.20\00:02:11.25 Now Ricky, you put together small video showing 00:02:11.28\00:02:14.01 what it's like to be behind the scenes producing a video, 00:02:14.04\00:02:17.04 let's have a look at that now. 00:02:17.07\00:02:18.20 Okay. 00:02:18.23\00:02:19.28 On a typical video trip the odds that things 00:02:38.51\00:02:40.87 will fall perfectly into place is very slim. 00:02:40.90\00:02:44.38 There are usually unexpected road bumps along the way. 00:02:44.41\00:02:47.90 For starters, I was faced with the challenges of keeping 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.90 my batteries charged, my files safely stored 00:02:50.93\00:02:54.04 and I had to limit the weight of my equipment 00:02:54.07\00:02:56.51 and that was just the beginning. 00:02:56.54\00:02:59.30 We had a broken down vehicle and bad weather. 00:02:59.33\00:03:02.35 And when those kind of things happen, 00:03:02.38\00:03:04.26 it can be hard to find patience. 00:03:04.29\00:03:06.93 Then I thought about how these are probably 00:03:06.96\00:03:09.13 every day experiences for the people who live here. 00:03:09.16\00:03:12.98 These small inconveniences 00:03:13.01\00:03:15.07 are probably a normal part of their lives. 00:03:15.10\00:03:17.37 And they weren't annoyed or impatient. 00:03:17.40\00:03:20.08 They were smiling and parsing God. 00:03:20.11\00:03:23.10 That kind of put in my place for the rest of the trip. 00:03:23.13\00:03:27.06 God was in control through good and bad, 00:03:27.09\00:03:29.95 He provided us with some wonderful opportunities 00:03:29.98\00:03:32.92 to connect with our brothers and sisters 00:03:32.95\00:03:35.26 from around the world. 00:03:35.29\00:03:37.48 Although I was able to film some amazing things, 00:03:37.51\00:03:40.58 no camera is capable of capturing how good God is. 00:03:40.61\00:03:44.70 When I got off the boat on a small island in Raja Ampat 00:03:48.84\00:03:53.05 I was overwhelmed with the greeting we received. 00:03:53.08\00:03:56.35 We were greeted with beautiful singing 00:03:56.38\00:03:58.60 as we made our way toward the islands church. 00:03:58.63\00:04:02.55 As I entered the church in Raja Ampat 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.25 I felt strangely at home. 00:04:15.28\00:04:20.07 The ground was made of sand, their language is foreign 00:04:20.10\00:04:24.08 and there is even a snake hanging from the rafters, 00:04:24.11\00:04:27.44 but I knew that I was with family who I never met before. 00:04:27.47\00:04:33.45 And to think just 50 years ago 00:04:33.48\00:04:36.00 this region was home to cannibalistic tribes. 00:04:36.03\00:04:40.20 Even though I couldn't comprehend 00:04:40.23\00:04:41.63 although gospel message made it all the way out here. 00:04:41.66\00:04:44.67 I was glad it did. 00:04:44.70\00:04:47.01 Despite God's presence on this island 00:04:47.04\00:04:49.53 there are thousands of unreached people 00:04:49.56\00:04:51.70 in West Papua and all around the world. 00:04:51.73\00:04:54.84 Our mission still carries on until Jesus comes again. 00:04:54.87\00:05:01.49 So Ricky, you had a fabulous experience 00:05:03.53\00:05:05.31 on that trip I believe. 00:05:05.34\00:05:06.53 It was amazing, one of, 00:05:06.56\00:05:07.97 one of my favorite trips I have taken so far. 00:05:08.00\00:05:10.13 Yeah, and did you 00:05:10.16\00:05:12.15 meet any of the Global Mission pioneers working there? 00:05:12.18\00:05:14.73 Yeah, we met some church planters 00:05:14.76\00:05:16.61 while we were over there and it was amazing to see 00:05:16.64\00:05:19.24 'cause there-- there were no Adventist to start with. 00:05:19.27\00:05:22.17 It was just a completely un-entered area 00:05:22.20\00:05:24.62 and it was amazing to see how people can make 00:05:24.65\00:05:27.36 such an impact in their community 00:05:27.39\00:05:29.40 and raise a congregation of believers there. 00:05:29.43\00:05:31.96 Now Ricky, when you're out there 00:05:31.99\00:05:33.76 you are usually by yourself, 00:05:33.79\00:05:35.06 so you got to care for doing interviews, 00:05:35.09\00:05:38.04 camera, audios, lighting, everything. 00:05:38.07\00:05:41.56 Do you have horror stories of when you forgotten 00:05:41.59\00:05:43.57 to record to say or anything like that? 00:05:43.60\00:05:45.66 Oh, yeah, I-- probably 00:05:45.69\00:05:47.29 I shouldn't talk about those too much 00:05:47.32\00:05:48.81 but it's definitely happened once or twice. 00:05:48.84\00:05:51.26 I have-- I have gone 00:05:51.29\00:05:53.08 and forgot a memory card sometime, 00:05:53.11\00:05:54.70 I had to run back to the car, forgot batteries you know, 00:05:54.73\00:05:58.49 it happens all the time just because there are 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.63 so many things to think about 00:06:00.66\00:06:02.47 and then you're trying to focus on the story 00:06:02.50\00:06:04.14 that you're trying to convey and hope that this story 00:06:04.17\00:06:06.56 will bless people that you're showing it to 00:06:06.59\00:06:08.31 and so there are million things running through your head 00:06:08.34\00:06:11.25 as you're preparing for a trip, as you're on the trip, 00:06:11.28\00:06:13.68 even when you get back. 00:06:13.71\00:06:15.12 You look over your notes and its-- 00:06:15.15\00:06:16.79 there's a lot to think about its true. 00:06:16.82\00:06:18.35 Yeah, and if we were professional organization 00:06:18.38\00:06:21.99 with unlimited money, 00:06:22.02\00:06:23.20 that be four of you going but it just the one. 00:06:23.23\00:06:25.50 At least. 00:06:25.53\00:06:26.66 But we make it happen 00:06:26.69\00:06:28.63 with a usually just one person going 00:06:28.66\00:06:30.89 and its not due to us its because God allows us 00:06:30.92\00:06:34.16 to do that really, 00:06:34.19\00:06:35.22 otherwise there's really, no other way to do that. 00:06:35.25\00:06:37.81 Wonderful. 00:06:37.84\00:06:38.92 Ricky, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:06:38.95\00:06:42.08 Next stop we visit some path finders 00:06:42.11\00:06:44.73 who are making a difference in the community. 00:06:44.76\00:06:47.33 Okay, we are here loading buses 00:06:57.40\00:06:59.09 to go on the community service projects. 00:06:59.12\00:07:01.12 This is our face in the community 00:07:01.15\00:07:03.10 where people see that what path finding is all about 00:07:03.13\00:07:05.71 and that is serving people, 00:07:05.74\00:07:08.59 serving communities in Christ name. 00:07:08.62\00:07:11.10 And so we are loading about 27 buses 00:07:11.13\00:07:15.29 on this side about 10 or 12 on the other side. 00:07:15.32\00:07:19.31 How I feel about going out and doing community service 00:07:23.60\00:07:25.82 is really hopeful because you get to help people 00:07:25.85\00:07:28.98 and you get to see the smile on their faces, 00:07:29.01\00:07:31.51 when you help them and I thinks that's really 00:07:31.54\00:07:33.35 important to me and I like that. 00:07:33.38\00:07:34.49 Well, this morning we are expecting about 00:07:36.74\00:07:38.34 8,000 path finders to be out there serving communities. 00:07:38.37\00:07:42.55 And Jesus came not to be served 00:07:42.58\00:07:44.52 but to serve and that is our Christian duty 00:07:44.55\00:07:47.06 and responsibility serving others 00:07:47.09\00:07:49.56 and our youth are involved and engaged 00:07:49.59\00:07:52.28 doing just that, serving people in Christ's name. 00:07:52.31\00:07:56.33 Path finders from all over the world 00:07:56.36\00:07:58.71 join together to serve the local communities 00:07:58.74\00:08:01.08 around Oshkosh, Wisconsin. 00:08:01.11\00:08:03.73 Adventist community services led the efforts 00:08:03.76\00:08:06.39 by organizing service opportunities 00:08:06.42\00:08:08.28 among various projects in the area. 00:08:08.31\00:08:11.64 The campery hosted about 40, 000 pathfinders, 00:08:11.67\00:08:15.34 and had about 8,000 voluntaries spots. 00:08:15.37\00:08:18.00 So the opportunities where in high demand 00:08:18.03\00:08:20.95 even when things got a little chaotic 00:08:20.98\00:08:23.07 the pathfinders lived up to their reputation. 00:08:23.10\00:08:26.68 You know, they really have been pretty patience. 00:08:26.71\00:08:29.28 It gets a little hectic when we load the buses, 00:08:29.31\00:08:32.51 we had a couple of projects had to cancel 00:08:32.54\00:08:34.79 for various reasons 00:08:34.82\00:08:36.27 and the pathfinders have been so understanding, 00:08:36.30\00:08:40.20 you know, on that side they been awesome as far as-- 00:08:40.23\00:08:44.64 you know, saying hey, we're glad to help 00:08:44.67\00:08:47.17 if we can, that's fine but the Lord will work it out. 00:08:47.20\00:08:52.07 Volunteers worked in gardens, 00:08:52.10\00:08:54.33 painted fences, moved rocks 00:08:54.36\00:08:56.65 and brought joy to the people they served. 00:08:56.68\00:08:59.03 Even thought the work was hard 00:08:59.06\00:09:00.80 the pathfinders kept a good attitude 00:09:00.83\00:09:03.13 and did a great job. 00:09:03.16\00:09:05.09 All the leaders that I have talked to other projects 00:09:05.12\00:09:07.65 have told me, what a wonderful job 00:09:07.68\00:09:09.21 that our young people, our pathfinders are doing. 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.66 So it makes us proud, 00:09:11.69\00:09:12.75 you know, we are glad that they are able to go out 00:09:12.78\00:09:14.76 make an impression in the community 00:09:14.79\00:09:17.05 and show people that what Christian love 00:09:17.08\00:09:20.64 and this interested benevolence is all about. 00:09:20.67\00:09:23.96 You know, they worked hard, 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.21 its hard to work, I was out yesterday 00:09:25.24\00:09:26.96 they are doing hard work but they're loving it. 00:09:26.99\00:09:30.48 And they are just coming back all excited and pumped 00:09:30.51\00:09:33.15 that they can do this for Jesus. 00:09:33.18\00:09:36.06 Back at the camp pathfinders were given the chance 00:09:36.09\00:09:39.06 to complete the community service course 00:09:39.09\00:09:41.25 and earn an honor batch. 00:09:41.28\00:09:43.21 Hundred's of people took advantage 00:09:43.24\00:09:44.95 of this opportunity to learn more about 00:09:44.98\00:09:47.19 what it means to serve your community. 00:09:47.22\00:09:49.46 You know, John Milton once said, 00:09:49.49\00:09:51.71 the end of all learning is to know God 00:09:51.74\00:09:54.41 and out of that knowledge we love and imitate Him. 00:09:54.44\00:09:58.08 And we are not just learning about Jesus 00:09:58.11\00:10:00.55 but we are at being, you know, His messenger, 00:10:00.58\00:10:03.82 His ambassadors as a change agent 00:10:03.85\00:10:06.30 and the difference makers. 00:10:06.33\00:10:07.80 So not only we talk and study and pray about our belief 00:10:07.83\00:10:12.21 but now we have put that belief in action 00:10:12.24\00:10:15.50 and compassion and action. 00:10:15.53\00:10:17.13 It's a awesome opportunity for our use to involve 00:10:17.16\00:10:20.65 and experience what is like true Christianity, 00:10:20.68\00:10:24.03 you know, in you can touch and feel and smell. 00:10:24.06\00:10:27.69 And so it is really a great opportunity. 00:10:27.72\00:10:31.34 Thank you so much for joining us today 00:10:31.37\00:10:32.82 on Global Mission Snapshots 00:10:32.85\00:10:34.77 and I hope that you have been inspired 00:10:34.80\00:10:36.25 and challenged about what you have seen and heard. 00:10:36.28\00:10:39.42 From radio waves in Nepal 00:10:39.45\00:10:41.58 to pathfinders with enthusiasm 00:10:41.61\00:10:44.17 making a difference in their local communities, 00:10:44.20\00:10:46.70 the light of God's love is being show 00:10:46.73\00:10:48.95 in tangible ways around the globe. 00:10:48.98\00:10:52.08 Please remember to pray for the people 00:10:52.11\00:10:54.40 and places that you see on this program. 00:10:54.43\00:10:56.93 Frontline mission work can be very exciting, 00:10:56.96\00:10:59.43 it can be challenging but it can be discouraging 00:10:59.46\00:11:02.20 and at times it can very lonely 00:11:02.23\00:11:03.79 and so encouraging for frontline workers 00:11:03.82\00:11:06.88 to know that there is a world church praying for them. 00:11:06.91\00:11:10.15 So
