On today's program 00:00:04.83\00:00:06.36 mission projects that you can reach by boat 00:00:06.39\00:00:09.45 and one place that you will never reach by boat. 00:00:09.48\00:00:12.33 That and much more 00:00:12.36\00:00:13.60 coming up next on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:13.63\00:00:16.63 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:20.69\00:00:23.27 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:23.30\00:00:26.27 He gave us a mission. 00:00:26.30\00:00:28.94 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:28.97\00:00:33.58 telling them of His love." 00:00:33.61\00:00:36.30 This is our mission. 00:00:36.33\00:00:38.30 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:38.33\00:00:40.68 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:45.91\00:00:48.04 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:48.07\00:00:49.40 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:49.43\00:00:50.90 from the capital of Maryland in the United States. 00:00:50.93\00:00:54.24 And Annapolis as you can see is a port city. 00:00:54.27\00:00:57.35 We think today of international travels 00:00:57.38\00:00:59.33 starting and ending in international airports, 00:00:59.36\00:01:02.06 but back a few years ago this is where it all happened. 00:01:02.09\00:01:05.53 International travel started and ended 00:01:05.56\00:01:08.41 in places just like this. 00:01:08.44\00:01:10.77 And today, we could hit out on a boat 00:01:10.80\00:01:12.67 through the Chesapeake Bay and out in to the ocean 00:01:12.70\00:01:15.07 and we could visit many of the places 00:01:15.10\00:01:17.49 that we're going to see on today's program 00:01:17.52\00:01:19.20 but it will take too long. 00:01:19.23\00:01:21.20 So instead we gonna do a quick trip, 00:01:21.23\00:01:22.74 we gonna go to Bergen in Norway, a port city 00:01:22.77\00:01:25.90 and we're gonna talk to a pastor there 00:01:25.93\00:01:28.22 about the many challenges of urban mission. 00:01:28.25\00:01:30.95 Particularly in a country 00:01:30.98\00:01:32.21 that is becoming more and more secularized. 00:01:32.24\00:01:35.07 We also travel to Chicago right here in North America. 00:01:35.10\00:01:38.30 It's a port city but it's in inland sea, 00:01:38.33\00:01:40.85 and the great lakes. 00:01:40.88\00:01:42.44 But first up let's travel to Alaska 00:01:42.47\00:01:45.17 and we'll visit a Global Mission pioneer. 00:01:45.20\00:01:47.49 Togiak, is a small village in the south of Alaska. 00:01:49.82\00:01:53.69 It lies north of Togiak bay and south-west of Anchorage. 00:01:53.72\00:01:58.31 You cannot drive to Togiak, this is a very remote place 00:01:58.34\00:02:01.64 and it takes a couple of airplane rides to get there. 00:02:01.67\00:02:05.19 About 800 people live this rural community. 00:02:05.22\00:02:08.42 This village is mostly made up of two Native American families 00:02:08.45\00:02:12.70 and the people here are very close. 00:02:12.73\00:02:15.63 In this part of Alaska you can have nearly 20 hours 00:02:15.66\00:02:18.80 of sunlight in a summer day 00:02:18.83\00:02:20.87 and close to 17 hours of complete darkness 00:02:20.90\00:02:24.24 in the winter months. 00:02:24.27\00:02:25.78 Chad and Liz arrived here straight out of collage. 00:02:25.81\00:02:29.33 They came with a goal to plant a church. 00:02:29.36\00:02:32.03 Can you imagine leaving your family and friends 00:02:32.06\00:02:34.58 to go to a completely strange place? 00:02:34.61\00:02:37.33 Well, what they didn't know 00:02:37.36\00:02:38.65 is that God had already started to pave the way for them. 00:02:38.68\00:02:42.59 Chad's grandmother had built a very strong relationship 00:02:42.62\00:02:45.60 with people of this community, many years ago. 00:02:45.63\00:02:49.42 Although Chad and Liz would have a rocky road ahead, 00:02:49.45\00:02:52.57 they were warm welcomed by a some 00:02:52.60\00:02:54.61 who remember their grandmas dedicated work. 00:02:54.64\00:02:57.87 Chad isn't any Inuit/Aleut and he understands 00:02:57.90\00:03:01.16 the way of life in this region of Alaska. 00:03:01.19\00:03:04.06 Like many of the men in this village 00:03:04.09\00:03:06.28 he is a fisherman. 00:03:06.31\00:03:07.89 Chad is connecting with his roots 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.71 as he needs the people of Togiak 00:03:09.74\00:03:11.78 inviting them to study the Bible 00:03:11.81\00:03:13.78 and get baptized. 00:03:13.81\00:03:15.33 Before long pioneer Chad and Liz 00:03:15.36\00:03:18.01 realized God had a special work for them here, 00:03:18.04\00:03:21.16 they were called to specially minister to God's little ones. 00:03:21.19\00:03:26.01 Besides they work as teachers at the local school, 00:03:26.04\00:03:28.82 they extend their ministry beyond school gates, 00:03:28.85\00:03:31.82 all the way into the church facility. 00:03:31.85\00:03:34.96 Kids are the future, and I said Lord, 00:03:34.99\00:03:38.32 if you have given my wife and I gift to love these kids, 00:03:38.35\00:03:40.87 like You love us, we're gonna do it. 00:03:40.90\00:03:45.07 The kids love to hear Bible stories, 00:03:45.10\00:03:47.10 play games and experience the love of Jesus 00:03:47.13\00:03:50.26 first hand through the ministry of Chad and Liz. 00:03:50.29\00:03:54.07 We are here for them 00:03:54.10\00:03:55.18 but its like God's love is known here, 00:03:55.21\00:03:58.64 they want to be here. 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.43 Everyday they will come and knock on the door. 00:04:00.46\00:04:03.35 The kids simply love it here. 00:04:03.38\00:04:05.51 They often come with the excuse 00:04:05.54\00:04:07.08 to get a drink of water or use the churches bathroom, 00:04:07.11\00:04:09.89 but really they want to visit Chad and Liz, 00:04:09.92\00:04:12.70 spend time and eat a special meal together. 00:04:12.73\00:04:15.43 We love you, we take you, may we all say. 00:04:15.46\00:04:17.39 Amen. 00:04:17.42\00:04:19.89 Well, summer days are warm and exciting 00:04:19.92\00:04:22.28 winter days bring a challenge. 00:04:22.31\00:04:24.59 The sun rises about 10 in the morning 00:04:24.62\00:04:27.22 and sets around 5 pm. 00:04:27.25\00:04:29.47 It's difficult for any one to focus on healthy activities 00:04:29.50\00:04:32.56 and avoid common problems 00:04:32.59\00:04:34.88 such as drug abuse, drinking, smoking 00:04:34.91\00:04:37.86 and even overeating as people grow depressed 00:04:37.89\00:04:40.34 for lack of options. 00:04:40.37\00:04:42.87 But even in the winter, 00:04:42.90\00:04:44.12 the children have a place at the church 00:04:44.15\00:04:46.34 to learn and sing Christian songs. 00:04:46.37\00:04:48.96 Never in my life have I seen a church 00:04:48.99\00:04:50.66 where kids bring themselves, it changed me. 00:04:50.69\00:04:55.00 It's told me that when the love of God 00:04:55.03\00:05:00.35 is what it supposed to be in the church unconditionally, 00:05:00.38\00:05:04.82 no bias, no judgment 00:05:04.85\00:05:07.65 that kids can see that at such a young age 00:05:07.68\00:05:11.78 and it will inspire them 00:05:11.81\00:05:12.88 to point where they will bring themselves. 00:05:12.91\00:05:15.71 And they want it. 00:05:15.74\00:05:18.24 Chad and Liz continue to focus 00:05:18.27\00:05:20.00 on the kids of this community 00:05:20.03\00:05:21.69 but they never forget that there are others 00:05:21.72\00:05:24.04 who are also hungering for the love of Jesus. 00:05:24.07\00:05:27.24 On a daily basis Chad uses the VHF radio frequency 00:05:27.27\00:05:31.31 to spiritually feed hungry souls. 00:05:31.34\00:05:34.24 I'll turn on the VHF radio and its channel 68 00:05:34.27\00:05:38.15 so the pretty much all of Togiak 00:05:38.18\00:05:41.14 is in this network through VHF channel 68 on that frequency. 00:05:41.17\00:05:45.99 After noon Togiak, this is Pastor Chad Angasan 00:05:46.02\00:05:48.92 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:05:48.95\00:05:50.97 and it is about four minutes till 3 o'clock, 00:05:51.00\00:05:53.62 it is the 15th of July, Tuesday 00:05:53.65\00:05:57.03 and it is time for the reading of the day. 00:05:57.06\00:06:00.19 And now I tell them what that verse means to us. 00:06:00.22\00:06:03.32 What it means us personally 00:06:03.35\00:06:05.68 and why and how it applies to our lives and what we can-- 00:06:05.71\00:06:09.73 how we can use that verse in our daily lives. 00:06:09.76\00:06:12.35 God is using pioneer Chad and his wife Liz, 00:06:12.38\00:06:15.35 to touch Inuit people who like Chad, 00:06:15.38\00:06:17.19 who can connect with them through their ancestry, 00:06:17.22\00:06:19.80 but most importantly through the love 00:06:19.83\00:06:22.16 they communicate from God. 00:06:22.19\00:06:25.02 Please participate in this important mission 00:06:25.05\00:06:27.87 right where you are among your people and your friends. 00:06:27.90\00:06:31.67 God can use you to communicate love to a world and need. 00:06:31.70\00:06:35.78 Please also pray for pioneer Chad and Liz 00:06:35.81\00:06:38.89 as they do their part to share the hope of Jesus. 00:06:38.92\00:06:43.51 My guest is Frank Hardy who is a specialist 00:06:43.54\00:06:46.95 in the Navajo people and culture 00:06:46.98\00:06:49.81 and he is also fluent in their language. 00:06:49.84\00:06:51.41 Frank, thank you so much for joining us. 00:06:51.44\00:06:53.33 Very good to be here. 00:06:53.36\00:06:54.40 The Navajo people of course 00:06:54.43\00:06:56.44 a Native American people here in North America. 00:06:56.47\00:06:59.45 What sparked your interest in these people? 00:06:59.48\00:07:03.65 I have always been interested in languages 00:07:03.68\00:07:06.01 and I had a pastor, who worked so hard, 00:07:06.04\00:07:09.28 he had eight or nine churches 00:07:09.31\00:07:11.48 in the southern part of New Mexico. 00:07:11.51\00:07:13.07 And I thought I wanted to study for the ministry 00:07:13.10\00:07:16.01 and if I worked anywhere I wanted to work 00:07:16.04\00:07:17.97 there for them with those needs. 00:07:18.00\00:07:20.58 And so I finished at Union College 00:07:20.61\00:07:22.85 and one part of Central Union, 00:07:22.88\00:07:25.32 they called it Central Union at that time that overlapped 00:07:25.35\00:07:28.67 with the Texico Conference was Farmington. 00:07:28.70\00:07:32.20 So I went there to sell books after school 00:07:32.23\00:07:34.69 and they invited me go to La Vida Mission. 00:07:34.72\00:07:37.52 What did you discover about the Navajo people? 00:07:37.55\00:07:39.55 What what's special about them to you? 00:07:39.58\00:07:41.92 Oh, they're just so quiet, 00:07:41.95\00:07:45.79 it's impossible to shout in Navajo. 00:07:45.82\00:07:48.57 And they have so many needs, they are just very dear people. 00:07:52.54\00:07:56.59 I love them. 00:07:56.62\00:07:57.65 They are kind of gentle people? 00:07:57.68\00:07:59.17 Would you describe them, yeah? 00:07:59.20\00:08:00.78 Now, but not before. Right. 00:08:00.81\00:08:02.92 The reason for the long walk 00:08:02.95\00:08:04.23 was because they made themselves such a terror 00:08:04.26\00:08:07.19 in the southwest stealing sheep and attacking saddlers 00:08:07.22\00:08:09.92 that they were marched 00:08:09.95\00:08:11.56 over to the eastern part of New Mexico 00:08:11.59\00:08:13.14 and then they came back that was the long walk. 00:08:13.17\00:08:15.82 So why did you learn their language? 00:08:15.85\00:08:18.39 Well, when I went there 00:08:18.42\00:08:20.03 I wasn't thinking of learning of Navajo, 00:08:20.06\00:08:21.83 I was only thinking of gaining some experience 00:08:21.86\00:08:24.74 before I went on to do graduate work. 00:08:24.77\00:08:27.58 And when I got to the reservation 00:08:27.61\00:08:30.16 I purchased a copy the Navajo New Testimony 00:08:30.19\00:08:32.56 which I have here. 00:08:32.59\00:08:34.04 This is the copy that I brought. 00:08:34.07\00:08:36.30 This is the 1956 edition 00:08:36.33\00:08:38.78 and it was just so strange, so different 00:08:38.81\00:08:42.05 and it became an objective of fascination to me. 00:08:42.08\00:08:44.39 I read this book three times. 00:08:44.42\00:08:46.26 Yeah, so give us an example of Navajo language, 00:08:46.29\00:08:51.36 perhaps a Bible verse in Navajo. 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.24 Okay, Isaiah 1:17-- 00:08:53.27\00:08:56.77 This is the passage that says 00:09:14.75\00:09:17.36 "Come, let us reason together, says the Lord. 00:09:17.39\00:09:20.05 Though your sins be as scarlet, they will be white as snow, 00:09:20.08\00:09:22.36 though they be like crimson, they will be white as wool." 00:09:22.39\00:09:25.31 But the Navajo does not say as white as wool. 00:09:25.34\00:09:28.08 That would be-- that's not what they say. 00:09:28.11\00:09:31.83 They say-- 00:09:31.86\00:09:34.53 which means as white as white wool. 00:09:34.56\00:09:37.03 Because not all well under reservation is white. 00:09:37.06\00:09:39.50 So they clarify it. 00:09:39.53\00:09:40.68 They clarify. 00:09:40.71\00:09:41.85 So Frank, the gospel among the Navajo people 00:09:41.88\00:09:45.59 because their traditional believes 00:09:45.62\00:09:48.11 would be very different I imagine? 00:09:48.14\00:09:49.17 Yes. 00:09:49.20\00:09:50.48 How has the gospel entered among the, the people? 00:09:50.51\00:09:54.43 There is a long history 00:09:54.46\00:09:55.53 of Christianity on the reservation. 00:09:55.56\00:09:57.77 Catholics where established 00:09:57.80\00:09:59.53 in early presence at St. Michaels, Arizona 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.62 and also the Dutch Reformed 00:10:02.65\00:10:04.36 have had a congregation in Shiprock for like forever-- 00:10:04.39\00:10:07.57 it's a very old congregation. 00:10:07.60\00:10:10.22 Seventh-day-- well, I should mention it 00:10:10.25\00:10:13.28 about half the tribe is Christian 00:10:13.31\00:10:15.27 now, about 50 percent. 00:10:15.30\00:10:17.29 All their religion is maintained 00:10:17.32\00:10:18.67 at about five percent 00:10:18.70\00:10:20.25 the remaining 45 percent is peyote, 00:10:20.28\00:10:23.69 the Native American church. 00:10:23.72\00:10:25.69 And the Adventist work in the Navajo, 00:10:25.72\00:10:28.04 how would you describe that? 00:10:28.07\00:10:29.69 I-- we have an established work. 00:10:29.72\00:10:36.39 First I have to give you some geography. 00:10:36.42\00:10:39.37 The box of the reservation is in Arizona. 00:10:39.40\00:10:41.51 So think of a box of your favorite breakfast cereal, 00:10:41.54\00:10:45.11 and then if we go down from the top 00:10:45.14\00:10:47.26 we go a third of the way down the box 00:10:47.29\00:10:49.42 and halfway over toward the middle. 00:10:49.45\00:10:51.88 Now that's almost the reservation 00:10:51.91\00:10:53.84 form the right edge you have to go 00:10:53.87\00:10:55.12 little bit further right over in to Arizona 00:10:55.15\00:10:57.58 and from the top you have to little further up 00:10:57.61\00:10:59.74 in to Utah, that's the reservation. 00:10:59.77\00:11:01.82 Now our work is in two bands, two parallel bands, 00:11:01.85\00:11:05.71 one across the north of the reservation 00:11:05.74\00:11:07.71 the other across the south. 00:11:07.74\00:11:09.86 So across the north you would start in Shiprock 00:11:09.89\00:11:12.25 then Monument Valley then Page 00:11:12.28\00:11:14.07 and this is late breaking news the work in Page 00:11:14.10\00:11:16.31 is just starting out and this is exciting stuff 00:11:16.34\00:11:19.69 Allan and Kelley Fowler heading that up. 00:11:19.72\00:11:22.14 But then across the south you have a Gallup 00:11:22.17\00:11:25.95 and Window Rock and Kinlichee 00:11:25.98\00:11:28.69 and I think they might have some work in Ganado also 00:11:28.72\00:11:32.52 and then Chinle halfway between. 00:11:32.55\00:11:34.88 Now do we have Navajo believers 00:11:34.91\00:11:38.64 who are leading the work there? 00:11:38.67\00:11:39.96 Do we have any Navajo pastors? 00:11:39.99\00:11:42.50 Yes, at Monument Valley Pastor Charlie Whitehorse 00:11:42.53\00:11:46.98 is a native speaking Navajo and he has his D.Min. degree 00:11:47.01\00:11:52.42 from the Andrews University Seminar, 00:11:52.45\00:11:55.38 a layperson working in Page is Allan Fowler, 00:11:55.41\00:11:58.72 Allan and Kelley. 00:11:58.75\00:12:00.45 Both men left the Reservation temporarily 00:12:00.48\00:12:02.83 Allen to work, Pastor Whitehorse to steady. 00:12:02.86\00:12:06.91 But these people are not submission assignment 00:12:06.94\00:12:08.97 they are home. 00:12:09.00\00:12:10.05 This is their place. Among their own people. 00:12:10.08\00:12:12.00 Among their own people. 00:12:12.03\00:12:13.12 So Frank, as we finish up here 00:12:13.15\00:12:15.23 what is the importance of speaking to people 00:12:15.26\00:12:19.43 in their own language? 00:12:19.46\00:12:21.78 The importance is speaking to people in their own language 00:12:21.81\00:12:24.35 is they can understand it. 00:12:24.38\00:12:25.68 Right. 00:12:25.71\00:12:26.74 In the 2000 census, 00:12:26.77\00:12:27.93 I'm sorry don't have numbers from 2010 census 00:12:27.96\00:12:31.20 the Navajo people reported 00:12:31.23\00:12:33.10 over 7, 000 monolingual speakers of Navajo. 00:12:33.13\00:12:37.86 Now not every one is a monolingual speaker 00:12:37.89\00:12:41.18 but that 7,000 rounds up to eight. 00:12:41.21\00:12:43.23 Their actual number was 7,616 monolingual speakers of Navajo 00:12:43.26\00:12:49.98 who is going to reach those for the gospel. 00:12:50.01\00:12:52.50 Well, I can tell you it's gonna be, 00:12:52.53\00:12:53.59 it's gonna be somebody 00:12:53.62\00:12:54.67 that speaks among the language they know. 00:12:54.70\00:12:56.56 Yeah, exactly. 00:12:56.59\00:12:57.64 Now you have a couple of books that you have written 00:12:57.67\00:12:59.21 in Navajo there, Frank, Load of Wood? 00:12:59.24\00:13:01.42 Please do describe those. 00:13:01.45\00:13:02.81 Okay, this is the first one, 00:13:02.84\00:13:05.10 and this is not the reason the reason why we are here. 00:13:05.13\00:13:06.49 Right. 00:13:06.52\00:13:07.60 This book, I'm sorry this book is the reason why we were here 00:13:07.63\00:13:12.79 but this book is the first one to come out. 00:13:12.82\00:13:14.82 This was published in 1978 Christ Bihigii 00:13:14.85\00:13:18.79 that's means things that belong to Christ, 00:13:18.82\00:13:21.34 and it was little missionary book 00:13:21.37\00:13:22.63 that published in 10,000 copies. 00:13:22.66\00:13:25.06 And then this one Jesus Hol Yi'ashgo 00:13:25.09\00:13:28.25 is an adaptation not a straight up translation 00:13:28.28\00:13:30.55 but in adaptation of Steps to Christ. 00:13:30.58\00:13:33.21 The copyright holders the white estate 00:13:33.24\00:13:35.12 it was printed at the Review and Herald. 00:13:35.15\00:13:36.83 Wonderful. 00:13:36.86\00:13:38.47 Frank, thank you so much for sharing with us 00:13:38.50\00:13:40.88 and among the people that most of us 00:13:40.91\00:13:43.39 have heard little or no contact with 00:13:43.42\00:13:45.66 or we know that they are very special in the heart of God. 00:13:45.69\00:13:48.02 Yes, they certainly are. 00:13:48.05\00:13:50.27 Let me just mention my personal desire and hope 00:13:50.30\00:13:54.44 would be that our Navajo Adventist people 00:13:54.47\00:13:56.48 and that Navajo people generally will learn to know 00:13:56.51\00:13:59.49 and to appreciate this book, this is the 2000 Navajo Bible, 00:13:59.52\00:14:03.25 the complete Bible in the Navajo language, 00:14:03.28\00:14:05.40 it is beautifully well done. 00:14:05.43\00:14:07.46 Wonderful. 00:14:07.49\00:14:08.52 Thank you so much, Frank. 00:14:08.55\00:14:10.12 And we'll be right back straight after this break. 00:14:10.15\00:14:13.03
