00:01 Welcome back.
00:02 My guest is Pastor Delbert Pearman 00:03 who is the planning director 00:05 for the Office of Adventist Mission here 00:07 in the Adventist world head quarters. 00:08 Delbert, we actually shares offices next each other. 00:11 That's right. 00:12 Welcome to the program. 00:13 Thank you. 00:14 Now you have a vast experience in mission. 00:17 You've been a missionary where? 00:19 Well, I served-- right after the college 00:21 I went to Malawi served as an accountant 00:24 and return back home for about 12 years. 00:27 And then went to Sri Lanka 00:29 as a mission treasurer, four years. 00:32 Then I went to the Middle East 00:34 where I served as another four years 00:36 as secretary treasurer in the Middle East 00:39 and then I want to the Ethiopia as a union treasurer 00:43 and after that to the United States. 00:46 Now, when you came back from Ethiopia 00:48 you brought more than memories. 00:50 What did you bring back? 00:51 Oh, we brought a special gift an Ethiopian princess, 00:55 we adopted and Ethiopian girl. 00:57 Its just be a wonderful part of our family 01:00 as if she should had always being with us. 01:02 Yeah, what a blessing. 01:04 So, if you served as a missionary in Africa, 01:06 in Asia and the Middle East 01:08 and we are talking about 13th Sabbath offering Mission, 01:11 13th Sabbath Mission Offerings 01:14 which are collected I guess every 13 weeks-- 01:17 And this is the special offering 01:19 and you've actually seen 01:21 some of the results of these offerings. 01:22 Yes, yes. Very much so. 01:25 The 13th Sabbath offering is a way for the Church 01:29 to develop institution such as schools, 01:33 clinics, hospitals, purchase airplanes 01:37 by which we can support 01:39 the church planting activities of the church. 01:43 And it actually started in 1912 01:46 with the first offering going to India to develop a school. 01:51 And we saw that in Asia and even in Africa, 01:54 matter of fact in the division the second offering went 01:57 to the Adventist University of Eastern Africa in Baraton 02:00 was the second offering in 1912. 02:04 And today it is the thriving university there in Kenya 02:08 and you could see the long term results 02:11 of the 13th Sabbath Offering providing resources for things 02:16 that the mission would not otherwise be able to do 02:19 because of the very high cost. 02:21 And so I've seen the blessings 02:23 of these offerings down to the years 02:26 in various parts of the world. 02:28 Now Delbert, every week in Adventist churches 02:31 mission offerings are collective 02:32 but this is a very special project driven offering. 02:37 Yes, that's correct. 02:38 Yeah, this allow us to focus on specific projects 02:43 where the church at the Annual Council meeting 02:46 of the world church every year would vote projects 02:50 for the succeeding years. 02:51 And the whole world church focuses 02:54 on one particular region of the world 02:56 and on one particular project 02:58 and so, that's how we work collaboratively together 03:02 to help to expand the work 03:03 in different parts of the world. 03:05 Now, how much money is collected 03:07 for an average 13th Sabbath Offering? 03:11 Approximately when you look at the total income right now 03:16 its over four million dollars collected around the world. 03:19 Per year? Per year, yes, Yes. 03:21 So each quarter a region of the world 03:24 can more or less count on a million dollars 03:27 to go to some specific needy projects? 03:29 That's collect. Yes, yes. 03:31 Now how do people give to this offering? 03:33 Well, they give through these Sabbath school offering 03:37 when the offer plate comes along every 13th Sabbath 03:40 or they can give directly to their conference 03:44 or their mission designated 03:46 for the 13th Sabbath Offering project. 03:49 Right, and also viewers at home, you may not attend 03:53 the Seventh-day Adventist church 03:54 but you think that this is something 03:56 that you would like to support 03:57 because its making a difference 03:58 in people's life around the world 04:00 you can just go to adventistmission.org 04:03 and on there you will find online giving 04:05 and you can specifically designate 04:08 that you want to give a donation 04:09 to 13th Sabbath Offering. 04:12 Now Delbert, we see buildings, 04:15 we see hospitals, clinics, schools 04:17 as you mentioned but as more on that its people. 04:20 Yes, that's correct. 04:21 It's the way of which the church 04:23 can broad in its outreach 04:25 and its support for that community 04:28 by serving the needs of students. 04:31 Many people who would come 04:32 to our hospitals are non-Adventist, 04:34 many who attend our schools are non-Adventist. 04:36 So this is a way by which the church can reach out 04:40 and touch even in the lives of the community. 04:44 Delbert, when you travel-- 04:47 I know that you've just come back form Africa 04:49 what are some of the biggest needs 04:51 that you see in mission? 04:52 I mean, there's many, many needs 04:54 but what are the major needs that are still there? 04:57 Probably one that really impacts me is the need 05:01 for reaching the urban areas. 05:04 In large cities of the world 05:05 we have people just flocking in over 200,000 everyday 05:10 it is estimated in Africa or people migrating to cities 05:14 and many of them don't-- 05:15 the cities don't have the services 05:17 the infrastructure to accommodate 05:20 these individuals around the world. 05:22 Many are poor and so therefore, 05:26 the Adventist church can very much 05:29 as Ellen White talks about centers of influence 05:32 these can be established and the 13th Sabbath Offerings 05:35 can also help to establish these whereby the church 05:38 can touch the needs of the community. 05:40 In doing so in holistic way, 05:43 lead them further on to saving relationship with Jesus Christ. 05:48 So, reaching the cities through health, lecturing, 05:52 through literacy training, 05:54 through vegetarian restaurants, lifestyle, 05:59 many different areas I could see 06:01 where the cities need what we have. 06:05 Now Delbert, as well know our office is helping support 06:08 many urban centers of influence around the world. 06:10 And share one or two of the projects 06:14 that we help support. 06:15 Well, in Europe we help with vegetarian restaurants, 06:21 in Africa we have AIDS screening clinics 06:25 that we are supporting there, 06:27 also music clinics and also in Asia. 06:33 So we have several of them doing various things, 06:37 many different ways of which the church is able to touch 06:41 the community all around the world. 06:43 We have lots of those. 06:44 Thanks so much for joining us today, Delbert. 06:46 Please continue to support mission 06:48 through the 13th Sabbath Offerings 06:50 and through mission offerings 06:51 and you can go to adventistmission.org 06:53 for more information. 06:54 Next up, let's see what will be happening 06:57 to 13th Sabbath Offerings right here 07:00 in North American region of the world. 07:07 Micronesia is one of three sub regions of Oceania. 07:11 The name Micronesia means, 07:13 small islands with a totally land mass 07:15 of only 2000 square miles. 07:18 These islands are indeed dots 07:20 in the beautiful blue oceans around them. 07:24 Kosrae is one of the four main islands 07:26 in the Federated States of Micronesia. 07:29 In this island you will see 07:31 beautiful sunsets, lush green forests, 07:34 exotic fruit trees and a lot of friendly people 07:37 who know how to live in community. 07:40 There are large churches in Kosrae. 07:43 The majority of the people attend 07:44 the large church buildings of this main denomination here. 07:49 In Kosrae, the families are very close 07:52 and stick together wherever there go. 07:54 So, when a person decides to join a different church group 07:57 that means separating from family, friends 08:00 and inheritance the family might leave you. 08:03 Conversion is such a strong decision 08:05 that one may come from riches 08:07 to living on the streets on the same day. 08:10 While coming to an Adventist church 08:12 may be considered social suicide 08:14 attending an Adventist school is highly valued here. 08:19 In fact, the Seventh-day Adventist school in Kosrae 08:22 as well as other Adventist schools 08:24 in Micronesian Islands have graduated senators, 08:27 queens and other government officials. 08:30 Our schools well known to the community 08:34 and many of the leaders in the islands 08:37 have gone through our schools. 08:39 Example in Palau, the queen of Palau went to our schools, 08:44 several other senators have gone to our school 08:46 right here in Guam the former lieutenant governor 08:49 had gone through our school to Walla Walla 08:51 and then to Loma Linda medical center 08:54 where he became a doctor and he practices here. 08:58 So we have a lot of the leadership 09:00 and in the islands in Pohnpei for example, 09:04 the former lieutenant governor who know pastor for us. 09:08 This legacy of quality and holistic education at large 09:12 is credited to the dedicated work of student 09:15 and volunteer missionaries 09:16 who come from all over North America and the world. 09:20 They come for one year to teach, serve, love 09:24 and care for the precious children in the islands. 09:27 This is a life time opportunity to engage a different culture 09:31 and to share the love of Christ. 09:34 The youth here in Kosrae love to play sports. 09:38 They often spend their time practicing 09:40 and playing with the neighbor's at the local ball field 09:42 and on the school court. 09:44 Unfortunately, the weather is so unpredictable here 09:47 when it rains, it pours also the sun 09:50 near the equator burns harder during the day 09:53 and at night there is scarce access to electric light. 09:56 The kids get together and play anyway. 10:03 The Adventist church wants to built a gym here in Kosrae 10:06 as well as on three other schools on the islands 10:08 that do not yet have a gym. 10:11 Gymnasiums have proven to be an effective tool 10:14 to invite the community to play sports 10:16 and have fun but also as a place 10:19 to conduct common interest seminars, 10:21 a place for shelter 10:22 and many other relationship building activities. 10:27 In Kosrae this gym will become the centre of attraction 10:30 to the people of the island. 10:32 Can you imagine the impact this will make? 10:35 This quarter, your offering will go to support 10:37 the construction of four gyms in the islands 10:40 of Kosrae, Chuuk, Yap and Saipan. 10:44 This small investment 10:46 will pay dividends now and for eternity. 10:51 Please pray for the children attending Adventist schools 10:54 and Micronesian islands, 10:56 also pray for the community around Camp Polaris in Alaska. 11:00 A portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 11:02 this quarter will support these projects 11:05 and other out reach initiatives in North America. 11:10 Some from million people come to Washington D.C. 11:14 and view the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial every year. 11:17 Nearly, 60,000 names are written 11:20 all along this wall of people who died in military service. 11:24 I like to think that God keeps a list in heaven 11:27 and it's a list of missionaries 11:29 who have been on the frontlines of service 11:31 and have given their lives 11:33 sharing the love of Jesus Christ. 11:35 Well, that's about it for today's program 11:38 and I want to thank you for your continuing prayers 11:40 and support for mission around the world. 11:43 Mission service can be lonely, can be discouraging 11:45 and so encouraging for people to know 11:48 that's there is a world church praying for them. 11:50 Before we go I would like to give you an offer 11:53 and it's a Global Mission Calendar. 11:55 This calendar is full of faces 11:57 of mission from around the world 11:59 and there it's a daily reminder to pray for people 12:02 that they may come to know Jesus as their Savior. 12:05 For Global Mission, I am Gary Krause 12:07 and I hope you can join me next time right here 12:10 on Global Mission Snapshots. |
