Welcome back. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 My guest is Pastor Delbert Pearman 00:00:02.12\00:00:03.25 who is the planning director 00:00:03.28\00:00:05.12 for the Office of Adventist Mission here 00:00:05.15\00:00:07.12 in the Adventist world head quarters. 00:00:07.15\00:00:08.53 Delbert, we actually shares offices next each other. 00:00:08.56\00:00:11.24 That's right. 00:00:11.27\00:00:12.33 Welcome to the program. 00:00:12.36\00:00:13.42 Thank you. 00:00:13.45\00:00:14.52 Now you have a vast experience in mission. 00:00:14.55\00:00:17.05 You've been a missionary where? 00:00:17.08\00:00:19.32 Well, I served-- right after the college 00:00:19.35\00:00:21.50 I went to Malawi served as an accountant 00:00:21.53\00:00:24.50 and return back home for about 12 years. 00:00:24.53\00:00:27.44 And then went to Sri Lanka 00:00:27.47\00:00:29.51 as a mission treasurer, four years. 00:00:29.54\00:00:32.57 Then I went to the Middle East 00:00:32.60\00:00:34.28 where I served as another four years 00:00:34.31\00:00:36.91 as secretary treasurer in the Middle East 00:00:36.94\00:00:39.93 and then I want to the Ethiopia as a union treasurer 00:00:39.96\00:00:43.55 and after that to the United States. 00:00:43.58\00:00:46.02 Now, when you came back from Ethiopia 00:00:46.05\00:00:48.67 you brought more than memories. 00:00:48.70\00:00:50.42 What did you bring back? 00:00:50.45\00:00:51.52 Oh, we brought a special gift an Ethiopian princess, 00:00:51.55\00:00:55.27 we adopted and Ethiopian girl. 00:00:55.30\00:00:57.82 Its just be a wonderful part of our family 00:00:57.85\00:01:00.62 as if she should had always being with us. 00:01:00.65\00:01:02.83 Yeah, what a blessing. 00:01:02.86\00:01:04.33 So, if you served as a missionary in Africa, 00:01:04.36\00:01:06.52 in Asia and the Middle East 00:01:06.55\00:01:08.35 and we are talking about 13th Sabbath offering Mission, 00:01:08.38\00:01:11.78 13th Sabbath Mission Offerings 00:01:11.81\00:01:14.23 which are collected I guess every 13 weeks-- 00:01:14.26\00:01:17.55 And this is the special offering 00:01:17.58\00:01:19.62 and you've actually seen 00:01:19.65\00:01:21.03 some of the results of these offerings. 00:01:21.06\00:01:22.80 Yes, yes. Very much so. 00:01:22.83\00:01:25.15 The 13th Sabbath offering is a way for the Church 00:01:25.18\00:01:29.20 to develop institution such as schools, 00:01:29.23\00:01:33.39 clinics, hospitals, purchase airplanes 00:01:33.42\00:01:37.37 by which we can support 00:01:37.40\00:01:39.65 the church planting activities of the church. 00:01:39.68\00:01:43.24 And it actually started in 1912 00:01:43.27\00:01:46.91 with the first offering going to India to develop a school. 00:01:46.94\00:01:51.56 And we saw that in Asia and even in Africa, 00:01:51.59\00:01:54.44 matter of fact in the division the second offering went 00:01:54.47\00:01:57.23 to the Adventist University of Eastern Africa in Baraton 00:01:57.26\00:02:00.95 was the second offering in 1912. 00:02:00.98\00:02:04.22 And today it is the thriving university there in Kenya 00:02:04.25\00:02:08.63 and you could see the long term results 00:02:08.66\00:02:11.07 of the 13th Sabbath Offering providing resources for things 00:02:11.10\00:02:16.64 that the mission would not otherwise be able to do 00:02:16.67\00:02:19.39 because of the very high cost. 00:02:19.42\00:02:21.50 And so I've seen the blessings 00:02:21.53\00:02:23.55 of these offerings down to the years 00:02:23.58\00:02:26.12 in various parts of the world. 00:02:26.15\00:02:28.34 Now Delbert, every week in Adventist churches 00:02:28.37\00:02:31.36 mission offerings are collective 00:02:31.39\00:02:32.73 but this is a very special project driven offering. 00:02:32.76\00:02:37.24 Yes, that's correct. 00:02:37.27\00:02:38.65 Yeah, this allow us to focus on specific projects 00:02:38.68\00:02:43.04 where the church at the Annual Council meeting 00:02:43.07\00:02:46.35 of the world church every year would vote projects 00:02:46.38\00:02:50.17 for the succeeding years. 00:02:50.20\00:02:51.73 And the whole world church focuses 00:02:51.76\00:02:54.40 on one particular region of the world 00:02:54.43\00:02:56.81 and on one particular project 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.91 and so, that's how we work collaboratively together 00:02:58.94\00:03:02.49 to help to expand the work 00:03:02.52\00:03:03.96 in different parts of the world. 00:03:03.99\00:03:05.94 Now, how much money is collected 00:03:05.97\00:03:07.79 for an average 13th Sabbath Offering? 00:03:07.82\00:03:11.85 Approximately when you look at the total income right now 00:03:11.88\00:03:16.12 its over four million dollars collected around the world. 00:03:16.15\00:03:19.01 Per year? Per year, yes, Yes. 00:03:19.04\00:03:21.74 So each quarter a region of the world 00:03:21.77\00:03:24.49 can more or less count on a million dollars 00:03:24.52\00:03:27.06 to go to some specific needy projects? 00:03:27.09\00:03:29.39 That's collect. Yes, yes. 00:03:29.42\00:03:30.97 Now how do people give to this offering? 00:03:31.00\00:03:33.04 Well, they give through these Sabbath school offering 00:03:33.07\00:03:36.97 when the offer plate comes along every 13th Sabbath 00:03:37.00\00:03:40.57 or they can give directly to their conference 00:03:40.60\00:03:44.90 or their mission designated 00:03:44.93\00:03:46.71 for the 13th Sabbath Offering project. 00:03:46.74\00:03:49.37 Right, and also viewers at home, you may not attend 00:03:49.40\00:03:53.10 the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:03:53.13\00:03:54.94 but you think that this is something 00:03:54.97\00:03:56.50 that you would like to support 00:03:56.53\00:03:57.67 because its making a difference 00:03:57.70\00:03:58.74 in people's life around the world 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.60 you can just go to adventistmission.org 00:04:00.63\00:04:03.25 and on there you will find online giving 00:04:03.28\00:04:05.78 and you can specifically designate 00:04:05.81\00:04:08.27 that you want to give a donation 00:04:08.30\00:04:09.56 to 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:04:09.59\00:04:12.96 Now Delbert, we see buildings, 00:04:12.99\00:04:15.33 we see hospitals, clinics, schools 00:04:15.36\00:04:17.09 as you mentioned but as more on that its people. 00:04:17.12\00:04:20.70 Yes, that's correct. 00:04:20.73\00:04:21.82 It's the way of which the church 00:04:21.85\00:04:23.64 can broad in its outreach 00:04:23.67\00:04:25.81 and its support for that community 00:04:25.84\00:04:28.56 by serving the needs of students. 00:04:28.59\00:04:31.08 Many people who would come 00:04:31.11\00:04:32.59 to our hospitals are non-Adventist, 00:04:32.62\00:04:34.38 many who attend our schools are non-Adventist. 00:04:34.41\00:04:36.72 So this is a way by which the church can reach out 00:04:36.75\00:04:40.11 and touch even in the lives of the community. 00:04:40.14\00:04:44.80 Delbert, when you travel-- 00:04:44.83\00:04:47.02 I know that you've just come back form Africa 00:04:47.05\00:04:49.41 what are some of the biggest needs 00:04:49.44\00:04:50.98 that you see in mission? 00:04:51.01\00:04:52.54 I mean, there's many, many needs 00:04:52.57\00:04:54.37 but what are the major needs that are still there? 00:04:54.40\00:04:57.48 Probably one that really impacts me is the need 00:04:57.51\00:05:01.45 for reaching the urban areas. 00:05:01.48\00:05:04.04 In large cities of the world 00:05:04.07\00:05:05.91 we have people just flocking in over 200,000 everyday 00:05:05.94\00:05:10.19 it is estimated in Africa or people migrating to cities 00:05:10.22\00:05:14.19 and many of them don't-- 00:05:14.22\00:05:15.89 the cities don't have the services 00:05:15.92\00:05:17.71 the infrastructure to accommodate 00:05:17.74\00:05:20.17 these individuals around the world. 00:05:20.20\00:05:22.92 Many are poor and so therefore, 00:05:22.95\00:05:26.51 the Adventist church can very much 00:05:26.54\00:05:29.05 as Ellen White talks about centers of influence 00:05:29.08\00:05:32.16 these can be established and the 13th Sabbath Offerings 00:05:32.19\00:05:35.03 can also help to establish these whereby the church 00:05:35.06\00:05:38.70 can touch the needs of the community. 00:05:38.73\00:05:40.51 In doing so in holistic way, 00:05:40.54\00:05:43.74 lead them further on to saving relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:05:43.77\00:05:48.42 So, reaching the cities through health, lecturing, 00:05:48.45\00:05:52.26 through literacy training, 00:05:52.29\00:05:54.52 through vegetarian restaurants, lifestyle, 00:05:54.55\00:05:59.52 many different areas I could see 00:05:59.55\00:06:01.87 where the cities need what we have. 00:06:01.90\00:06:05.17 Now Delbert, as well know our office is helping support 00:06:05.20\00:06:08.08 many urban centers of influence around the world. 00:06:08.11\00:06:10.91 And share one or two of the projects 00:06:10.94\00:06:14.21 that we help support. 00:06:14.24\00:06:15.82 Well, in Europe we help with vegetarian restaurants, 00:06:15.85\00:06:21.40 in Africa we have AIDS screening clinics 00:06:21.43\00:06:25.06 that we are supporting there, 00:06:25.09\00:06:27.95 also music clinics and also in Asia. 00:06:27.98\00:06:33.00 So we have several of them doing various things, 00:06:33.03\00:06:37.68 many different ways of which the church is able to touch 00:06:37.71\00:06:41.13 the community all around the world. 00:06:41.16\00:06:43.03 We have lots of those. 00:06:43.06\00:06:44.57 Thanks so much for joining us today, Delbert. 00:06:44.60\00:06:46.52 Please continue to support mission 00:06:46.55\00:06:48.63 through the 13th Sabbath Offerings 00:06:48.66\00:06:50.27 and through mission offerings 00:06:50.30\00:06:51.40 and you can go to adventistmission.org 00:06:51.43\00:06:53.43 for more information. 00:06:53.46\00:06:54.76 Next up, let's see what will be happening 00:06:54.79\00:06:57.90 to 13th Sabbath Offerings right here 00:06:57.93\00:07:00.49 in North American region of the world. 00:07:00.52\00:07:02.96 Micronesia is one of three sub regions of Oceania. 00:07:07.08\00:07:11.49 The name Micronesia means, 00:07:11.52\00:07:13.61 small islands with a totally land mass 00:07:13.64\00:07:15.88 of only 2000 square miles. 00:07:15.91\00:07:18.25 These islands are indeed dots 00:07:18.28\00:07:20.75 in the beautiful blue oceans around them. 00:07:20.78\00:07:24.14 Kosrae is one of the four main islands 00:07:24.17\00:07:26.88 in the Federated States of Micronesia. 00:07:26.91\00:07:29.73 In this island you will see 00:07:29.76\00:07:31.19 beautiful sunsets, lush green forests, 00:07:31.22\00:07:34.33 exotic fruit trees and a lot of friendly people 00:07:34.36\00:07:37.35 who know how to live in community. 00:07:37.38\00:07:40.36 There are large churches in Kosrae. 00:07:40.39\00:07:42.97 The majority of the people attend 00:07:43.00\00:07:44.49 the large church buildings of this main denomination here. 00:07:44.52\00:07:49.01 In Kosrae, the families are very close 00:07:49.04\00:07:52.05 and stick together wherever there go. 00:07:52.08\00:07:54.13 So, when a person decides to join a different church group 00:07:54.16\00:07:57.35 that means separating from family, friends 00:07:57.38\00:08:00.03 and inheritance the family might leave you. 00:08:00.06\00:08:03.44 Conversion is such a strong decision 00:08:03.47\00:08:05.94 that one may come from riches 00:08:05.97\00:08:07.87 to living on the streets on the same day. 00:08:07.90\00:08:10.79 While coming to an Adventist church 00:08:10.82\00:08:12.50 may be considered social suicide 00:08:12.53\00:08:14.72 attending an Adventist school is highly valued here. 00:08:14.75\00:08:19.27 In fact, the Seventh-day Adventist school in Kosrae 00:08:19.30\00:08:22.69 as well as other Adventist schools 00:08:22.72\00:08:24.46 in Micronesian Islands have graduated senators, 00:08:24.49\00:08:27.76 queens and other government officials. 00:08:27.79\00:08:30.80 Our schools well known to the community 00:08:30.83\00:08:34.58 and many of the leaders in the islands 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.32 have gone through our schools. 00:08:37.35\00:08:39.27 Example in Palau, the queen of Palau went to our schools, 00:08:39.30\00:08:44.11 several other senators have gone to our school 00:08:44.14\00:08:46.54 right here in Guam the former lieutenant governor 00:08:46.57\00:08:49.20 had gone through our school to Walla Walla 00:08:49.23\00:08:51.20 and then to Loma Linda medical center 00:08:51.23\00:08:54.52 where he became a doctor and he practices here. 00:08:54.55\00:08:58.34 So we have a lot of the leadership 00:08:58.37\00:09:00.63 and in the islands in Pohnpei for example, 00:09:00.66\00:09:04.31 the former lieutenant governor who know pastor for us. 00:09:04.34\00:09:08.46 This legacy of quality and holistic education at large 00:09:08.49\00:09:12.75 is credited to the dedicated work of student 00:09:12.78\00:09:15.27 and volunteer missionaries 00:09:15.30\00:09:16.83 who come from all over North America and the world. 00:09:16.86\00:09:20.63 They come for one year to teach, serve, love 00:09:20.66\00:09:24.04 and care for the precious children in the islands. 00:09:24.07\00:09:27.44 This is a life time opportunity to engage a different culture 00:09:27.47\00:09:31.43 and to share the love of Christ. 00:09:31.46\00:09:34.87 The youth here in Kosrae love to play sports. 00:09:34.90\00:09:38.16 They often spend their time practicing 00:09:38.19\00:09:40.10 and playing with the neighbor's at the local ball field 00:09:40.13\00:09:42.88 and on the school court. 00:09:42.91\00:09:44.66 Unfortunately, the weather is so unpredictable here 00:09:44.69\00:09:47.54 when it rains, it pours also the sun 00:09:47.57\00:09:50.60 near the equator burns harder during the day 00:09:50.63\00:09:53.13 and at night there is scarce access to electric light. 00:09:53.16\00:09:56.79 The kids get together and play anyway. 00:09:56.82\00:10:03.20 The Adventist church wants to built a gym here in Kosrae 00:10:03.23\00:10:06.50 as well as on three other schools on the islands 00:10:06.53\00:10:08.89 that do not yet have a gym. 00:10:08.92\00:10:11.37 Gymnasiums have proven to be an effective tool 00:10:11.40\00:10:14.36 to invite the community to play sports 00:10:14.39\00:10:16.57 and have fun but also as a place 00:10:16.60\00:10:19.00 to conduct common interest seminars, 00:10:19.03\00:10:21.55 a place for shelter 00:10:21.58\00:10:22.87 and many other relationship building activities. 00:10:22.90\00:10:27.36 In Kosrae this gym will become the centre of attraction 00:10:27.39\00:10:30.92 to the people of the island. 00:10:30.95\00:10:32.45 Can you imagine the impact this will make? 00:10:32.48\00:10:35.22 This quarter, your offering will go to support 00:10:35.25\00:10:37.42 the construction of four gyms in the islands 00:10:37.45\00:10:40.50 of Kosrae, Chuuk, Yap and Saipan. 00:10:40.53\00:10:44.66 This small investment 00:10:44.69\00:10:46.40 will pay dividends now and for eternity. 00:10:46.43\00:10:51.51 Please pray for the children attending Adventist schools 00:10:51.54\00:10:54.58 and Micronesian islands, 00:10:54.61\00:10:56.38 also pray for the community around Camp Polaris in Alaska. 00:10:56.41\00:11:00.64 A portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:11:00.67\00:11:02.89 this quarter will support these projects 00:11:02.92\00:11:05.28 and other out reach initiatives in North America. 00:11:05.31\00:11:10.45 Some from million people come to Washington D.C. 00:11:10.48\00:11:14.02 and view the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial every year. 00:11:14.05\00:11:17.35 Nearly, 60,000 names are written 00:11:17.38\00:11:20.30 all along this wall of people who died in military service. 00:11:20.33\00:11:24.73 I like to think that God keeps a list in heaven 00:11:24.76\00:11:27.23 and it's a list of missionaries 00:11:27.26\00:11:29.51 who have been on the frontlines of service 00:11:29.54\00:11:31.80 and have given their lives 00:11:31.83\00:11:33.25 sharing the love of Jesus Christ. 00:11:33.28\00:11:35.86 Well, that's about it for today's program 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.44 and I want to thank you for your continuing prayers 00:11:38.47\00:11:40.27 and support for mission around the world. 00:11:40.30\00:11:42.98 Mission service can be lonely, can be discouraging 00:11:43.01\00:11:45.72 and so encouraging for people to know 00:11:45.75\00:11:48.24 that's there is a world church praying for them. 00:11:48.27\00:11:50.86 Before we go I would like to give you an offer 00:11:50.89\00:11:53.02 and it's a Global Mission Calendar. 00:11:53.05\00:11:55.60 This calendar is full of faces 00:11:55.63\00:11:57.95 of mission from around the world 00:11:57.98\00:11:59.28 and there it's a daily reminder to pray for people 00:11:59.31\00:12:02.67 that they may come to know Jesus as their Savior. 00:12:02.70\00:12:05.53 For Global Mission, I am Gary Krause 00:12:05.56\00:12:07.59 and I hope you can join me next time right here 00:12:07.62\00:12:10.16 on Global Mission Snapshots.
