Most people don't think of North America 00:00:03.79\00:00:05.56 as being a mission field 00:00:05.59\00:00:06.82 but with rapidly growing cities the rise of secularism 00:00:06.85\00:00:10.76 many, many people in this area of the world 00:00:10.79\00:00:13.33 need to learn about Jesus Christ. 00:00:13.36\00:00:15.02 We will be learning more about that 00:00:15.05\00:00:16.56 and much more coming up next on this program. 00:00:16.59\00:00:19.62 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:23.94\00:00:26.44 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:26.47\00:00:29.41 He gave us a mission. 00:00:29.44\00:00:32.13 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:32.16\00:00:36.79 telling them of His love." 00:00:36.82\00:00:39.54 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:39.57\00:00:43.60 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:49.02\00:00:50.12 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:50.15\00:00:52.25 And on today's program you will meet many people 00:00:52.28\00:00:55.36 who are living their life 00:00:55.39\00:00:56.42 with purpose and with integrity. 00:00:56.45\00:00:58.74 They may never be written up in the history text books, 00:00:58.77\00:01:01.67 but they are special in the heart of God, 00:01:01.70\00:01:03.97 because they're following His command 00:01:04.00\00:01:05.53 to go ye into all the world 00:01:05.56\00:01:07.34 and they're making a difference in the lives of people, 00:01:07.37\00:01:09.86 not only now but for eternity. 00:01:09.89\00:01:12.44 First up, let's traveled to Alaska 00:01:12.47\00:01:14.25 and we'll meet a group of young people 00:01:14.28\00:01:16.10 who are making a big difference in the lives of children there. 00:01:16.13\00:01:19.33 I honestly think that Camp Polaris 00:01:23.35\00:01:25.39 in the location of Camp Polaris 00:01:25.42\00:01:26.97 is the church is sitting on 00:01:27.00\00:01:28.70 one of the most beautiful pieces 00:01:28.73\00:01:30.05 of real estate in the world. 00:01:30.08\00:01:32.11 It's amazing for kids to get come out in nature 00:01:32.14\00:01:35.26 where literally it's almost two hours 00:01:35.29\00:01:38.23 to the nearest civilization. 00:01:38.26\00:01:40.16 For instance the scenery right now is mountains, 00:01:40.19\00:01:43.36 a lake, it's amazing. 00:01:43.39\00:01:45.44 I think I come to camp to see the kids. 00:01:45.47\00:01:48.26 The kids are great, they're always energetic. 00:01:48.29\00:01:51.51 Camp gives them hope. 00:01:51.54\00:01:52.87 A lot of these kids have hard lives. 00:01:52.90\00:01:55.47 These kids live in a village, 00:01:55.50\00:01:58.07 they don't have any way to get out really. 00:01:58.10\00:02:00.28 The only way to get here 00:02:00.31\00:02:01.34 is by boat or plane, you can't drive. 00:02:01.37\00:02:03.46 They're in a small fishing village, 00:02:03.49\00:02:05.78 it's not a lot outside, 00:02:05.81\00:02:07.76 you are providing a home for them, 00:02:07.79\00:02:10.04 sort of a family and a home 00:02:10.07\00:02:11.28 where somewhere they are safe 00:02:11.31\00:02:13.28 and they can just have fun, and be kid for a week. 00:02:13.31\00:02:16.93 Gives them a week of this meeting adults and-- 00:02:16.96\00:02:20.45 I only have a-- a lot even our college kids 00:02:20.48\00:02:22.28 that are staff here, and when we got people 00:02:22.31\00:02:24.24 they are gonna be mechanical engineers, 00:02:24.27\00:02:25.90 we got electrical engineers, 00:02:25.93\00:02:29.24 the music majors all kinds of things 00:02:29.27\00:02:31.00 that are in our academy kids just 00:02:31.03\00:02:32.93 that are fairly established people 00:02:32.96\00:02:35.69 who get to rub shoulders as well as talk to them 00:02:35.72\00:02:38.21 and they get to see people that love them 00:02:38.24\00:02:40.42 and care about them that are, 00:02:40.45\00:02:41.60 that are not you know doing alcohol 00:02:41.63\00:02:43.65 or drugs or other things. 00:02:43.68\00:02:45.16 They are seeing people that are smiling 00:02:45.19\00:02:46.66 having a good time without causing trouble. 00:02:46.69\00:02:48.97 They deal with a lot of their suicide drugs, 00:02:49.00\00:02:52.44 alcoholism is big, 00:02:52.47\00:02:54.53 they grow up in alcoholic families 00:02:54.56\00:02:56.37 and they have broken that cycle. 00:02:56.40\00:02:58.59 It's hard, you know, for these kids that grow up 00:02:58.62\00:03:00.95 and doing ham and stay in doing ham 00:03:00.98\00:03:03.34 and never leave doing ham 00:03:03.37\00:03:04.52 and there's not of lot progression going on there. 00:03:04.55\00:03:07.74 And we're only one week a year, 00:03:07.77\00:03:09.45 you know so we got to really make a big impact 00:03:09.48\00:03:11.52 to have a lasting on the other 51 weeks. 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.31 Jesus! 00:03:14.34\00:03:16.02 When the school starts, they're singing 00:03:19.28\00:03:20.76 these songs throughout the year. 00:03:20.79\00:03:22.63 It's giving them a lot of enjoyment, 00:03:22.66\00:03:25.57 they're singing about God and they are hoping Him, 00:03:25.60\00:03:28.06 learn things about Him 00:03:28.09\00:03:29.71 and its also just giving them something 00:03:29.74\00:03:31.82 that they can then go home and teach others. 00:03:31.85\00:03:34.31 My favorite thing is a water sports 00:03:37.73\00:03:40.86 like kneeboarding, tubing. 00:03:40.89\00:03:43.76 Just learning about God and meeting friends. 00:03:43.79\00:03:46.78 I just came to have fun 00:03:46.81\00:03:48.25 and see if I can make new friends and visit. 00:03:48.28\00:03:52.66 My favorite thing about camp 00:03:52.69\00:03:55.48 is learning about God and Jesus, 00:03:55.51\00:03:57.86 because God is the one that made the world 00:03:57.89\00:04:01.96 and He's the one that helps us everyday. 00:04:01.99\00:04:08.80 A lot of these kids don't even know, 00:04:08.83\00:04:12.38 they don't know Bible stories, they don't-- 00:04:12.41\00:04:14.46 lot of not Christian so this is their-- 00:04:14.49\00:04:19.53 this is their experience with God. 00:04:19.56\00:04:22.87 Just being it is so warm up is a big thing and I hear, 00:04:35.03\00:04:37.32 because when you're in the water 00:04:37.35\00:04:38.80 and you get real cold real fast. 00:04:38.83\00:04:40.48 When they come out of the water, 00:04:40.51\00:04:41.96 they don't have a place to rinse off 00:04:41.99\00:04:44.03 and then they get what's called swimmers edge 00:04:44.06\00:04:46.81 or they call them duck mites, 00:04:46.84\00:04:48.37 a shower house would be a place where they could rinse off 00:04:48.40\00:04:51.71 so that they would be able to avoid having that happen. 00:04:51.74\00:04:54.31 I haven't gotten anything free, 00:04:54.34\00:04:55.85 I've scrubbed up really well in our makai 00:04:55.88\00:04:58.98 which is our-- our version of a shower, 00:04:59.01\00:05:02.60 it's basically is warehouse. 00:05:02.63\00:05:03.99 If you run in there and get hot and then run into the lake 00:05:07.83\00:05:11.88 and soap up and then run back into warm up again. 00:05:11.91\00:05:16.24 Okay, well, the sleeping conditions out here 00:05:16.27\00:05:18.21 is basically if you have a piece of cardboard, 00:05:18.24\00:05:20.08 you're the lucky winner, if you don't have a cardboard 00:05:20.11\00:05:22.43 you just sleep on 00:05:22.46\00:05:23.49 what's available with is nothing. 00:05:23.52\00:05:25.67 So we do hold cardboards out here 00:05:25.70\00:05:27.55 becomes a prime commodity. 00:05:27.58\00:05:29.09 Like all the camp stuff here's 00:05:29.12\00:05:31.19 about 50 years old probably, it's all falling apart. 00:05:31.22\00:05:37.67 The doors have big gaps 00:05:37.70\00:05:41.01 underneath them and above them. 00:05:41.04\00:05:42.97 The wind comes through so the kids are often cooled. 00:05:43.00\00:05:46.04 There's no more cabin space, if we'd have more kids. 00:05:46.07\00:05:48.95 We just need a facility that can accommodate, 00:05:48.98\00:05:52.38 but if we can improve those buildings 00:05:52.41\00:05:54.25 and the facility, 00:05:54.28\00:05:56.34 I think the mission could be broadened 00:05:56.37\00:05:58.58 and we could use it more 00:05:58.61\00:05:59.88 than just one week out of the year. 00:05:59.91\00:06:02.65 For the past 50 years, 00:06:02.68\00:06:04.60 camp Polaris has offered out houses only, 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.32 but with your assistance they planned to build 00:06:07.35\00:06:09.82 bath houses and rest rooms for the camp. 00:06:09.85\00:06:12.55 Government regulation has changed 00:06:12.58\00:06:14.70 and camp could happen for more weeks 00:06:14.73\00:06:16.85 if conditions were improved. 00:06:16.88\00:06:18.89 A portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering this quarter 00:06:18.92\00:06:21.78 will go to Camp Polaris. 00:06:21.81\00:06:23.64 Please pray for this wonderful ministry 00:06:23.67\00:06:26.02 that is connecting people in the remote areas 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.37 of Alaska to the God of hope. 00:06:28.40\00:06:30.61 My guest is Pastor Dan Jackson, 00:06:38.00\00:06:39.84 who is the president 00:06:39.87\00:06:40.96 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:06:40.99\00:06:42.79 in the North American region. 00:06:42.82\00:06:44.23 Pastor Jackson, thanks for joining us. 00:06:44.26\00:06:45.83 Thank you for having us. 00:06:45.86\00:06:47.05 We're looking a mission in your territory, 00:06:47.08\00:06:49.65 where does your territory actually extent to, 00:06:49.68\00:06:51.61 I'm thinking of north-- 00:06:51.64\00:06:52.70 I'm thinking of United States and Canada 00:06:52.73\00:06:55.04 but it's more than that right? 00:06:55.07\00:06:56.79 Yeah, it extends from Bermuda in the east, 00:06:56.82\00:07:01.02 to Guam and Micronesia in the west. 00:07:01.05\00:07:04.72 From the North Pole in the north 00:07:04.75\00:07:06.65 to the Florida Keys. 00:07:06.68\00:07:08.19 Okay. So it's a huge territory. 00:07:08.22\00:07:10.96 How many people are living in this territory? 00:07:10.99\00:07:14.12 You mean in the population? 00:07:14.15\00:07:16.19 I believe somewhere in the area 00:07:16.22\00:07:17.87 of about 330 to 350 million people. 00:07:17.90\00:07:21.56 Okay, now when many Adventist talk about mission 00:07:21.59\00:07:25.07 and they're talking about the mission field, 00:07:25.10\00:07:26.83 you know they're not thinking about North America, 00:07:26.86\00:07:28.78 they're thinking about overseas, 00:07:28.81\00:07:30.21 they're thinking of Africa or Asia et cetera, et cetera. 00:07:30.24\00:07:33.72 Why should we consider 00:07:33.75\00:07:35.00 North America on a mission field? 00:07:35.03\00:07:37.02 Well, America is a huge mission field. 00:07:37.05\00:07:40.43 I have said to many people and I continue to say it. 00:07:40.46\00:07:44.71 It is true that General Conference 00:07:44.74\00:07:46.28 is focusing on the 10/40 Window, 00:07:46.31\00:07:48.79 but for the North American Division 00:07:48.82\00:07:50.48 the 10/40 Window just moved in next door. 00:07:50.51\00:07:53.43 The huge immigration into these lands 00:07:53.46\00:07:56.03 as well as the indigenous populations 00:07:56.06\00:07:58.72 of the land, of the lands, 00:07:58.75\00:08:02.06 creates a great challenge to the church. 00:08:02.09\00:08:05.26 Not only is there the multi ethnic, 00:08:05.29\00:08:07.56 multi cultural issues 00:08:07.59\00:08:09.22 but there's also the issues of secularism 00:08:09.25\00:08:12.07 and postmodernism et cetera, et cetera, 00:08:12.10\00:08:14.51 that really, really make this a huge mission field. 00:08:14.54\00:08:19.08 Yeah, and you know I think its become a bit of a cliché 00:08:19.11\00:08:22.43 but North American now well, the United States 00:08:22.46\00:08:25.22 is no longer a Christian country. 00:08:25.25\00:08:27.32 Canada, the church attendance is right down low 00:08:27.35\00:08:30.61 and so we are noticing not on in rural but in cities, 00:08:30.64\00:08:36.90 whole groups of people who never even go to church, 00:08:36.93\00:08:40.26 who wouldn't claim to have any connection. 00:08:40.29\00:08:44.12 In the City of Vancouver for instance 00:08:44.15\00:08:46.16 in British Columbia and Vancouver 00:08:46.19\00:08:49.17 is somewhat similar to Seattle 00:08:49.20\00:08:50.78 in terms of its demographics and so on. 00:08:50.81\00:08:53.76 But in the city of Vancouver eight percent of the people 00:08:53.79\00:08:59.56 claim to have any Christian background at all. 00:08:59.59\00:09:03.11 So there-- we're talking in Canada, 00:09:03.14\00:09:05.15 it's a-- it is not a Christian society, 00:09:05.18\00:09:10.10 it is a secular, multicultural society, 00:09:10.13\00:09:15.85 a pluralistic society. 00:09:15.88\00:09:20.48 Usually the United States leads Canada 00:09:20.51\00:09:23.68 in a variety of different ways but in this regards 00:09:23.71\00:09:27.09 Canada really is a head of the United States. 00:09:27.12\00:09:29.14 Many of the things that have taken place in Canada 00:09:29.17\00:09:31.28 I see now happening in the United States. 00:09:31.31\00:09:34.69 What are some of the exciting, encouraging things you see 00:09:34.72\00:09:39.04 in mission here in North America? 00:09:39.07\00:09:41.70 Well, you know how long you have? 00:09:41.73\00:09:44.50 I have about four minutes. 00:09:44.53\00:09:46.04 Well, then you know number one in the general sense, 00:09:46.07\00:09:51.44 what I'm seeing as I travel around this division 00:09:51.47\00:09:55.23 is a great urgency among many people 00:09:55.26\00:09:58.76 to do exploits for God. 00:09:58.79\00:10:02.00 I was at a camp meeting 00:10:02.03\00:10:03.06 in Central California two years ago, 00:10:03.09\00:10:05.81 when a young woman got up her name was Lila Louis 00:10:05.84\00:10:09.46 and she gave this description of 00:10:09.49\00:10:12.62 what she wanted to do for the bay area 00:10:12.65\00:10:15.76 of San Francisco in Oakland. 00:10:15.79\00:10:18.22 I have to be honest as I listened to her, 00:10:18.25\00:10:21.20 I said to myself, 00:10:21.23\00:10:23.98 well, was she thinking strange thoughts, 00:10:24.01\00:10:28.45 but then a few months ago in the bridges project 00:10:28.48\00:10:32.90 in San Francisco and Oakland 00:10:32.93\00:10:35.10 and the Oakland Bay area 500 medical professions 00:10:35.13\00:10:42.56 assisted over 4,000 people 00:10:42.59\00:10:46.42 with four million dollars of free medical care 00:10:46.45\00:10:51.23 and not only did that 00:10:51.26\00:10:52.84 but they were involved with them, 00:10:52.87\00:10:55.80 there were people singing to them, 00:10:55.83\00:10:57.41 there was counseling, there was physiotherapy, 00:10:57.44\00:11:00.26 there was dentistry, 00:11:00.29\00:11:02.72 and what this is reaching out to a community 00:11:02.75\00:11:05.81 with the hands and feet of Jesus. 00:11:05.84\00:11:07.76 So that's very exciting. 00:11:07.79\00:11:09.65 Now that's kind of a movement that 00:11:09.68\00:11:11.51 and it is now, like a movement in North America, 00:11:11.54\00:11:14.42 because similar project are planed for Spokane 00:11:14.45\00:11:17.51 and San Antonio prior to the General Conference. 00:11:17.54\00:11:20.83 But that is one area, 00:11:20.86\00:11:23.55 another area where I was very excited was-- 00:11:23.58\00:11:27.43 I had the privilege of attending 00:11:27.46\00:11:29.06 the North American Division 00:11:29.09\00:11:30.41 Women's Ministries Convention in Orlando. 00:11:30.44\00:11:32.88 As a special invitee? I was a special invitee. 00:11:32.91\00:11:36.04 Somebody actually asked me how did you get here? 00:11:36.07\00:11:38.71 I just passed the estrogen test. 00:11:38.74\00:11:41.14 However what I saw 800 women do 00:11:41.17\00:11:46.10 for a day and a half or for a day rather in Orlando 00:11:46.13\00:11:49.77 that is you going into areas of the city, 00:11:49.80\00:11:54.26 assisting people with food, with clothing, 00:11:54.29\00:11:56.74 giving them massages, doing all kinds of things that were-- 00:11:56.77\00:12:01.44 a positive statement for the Christian faith. 00:12:01.47\00:12:04.40 Then of course, we have our traditional things 00:12:04.43\00:12:06.63 that are going on 00:12:06.66\00:12:07.88 of great evangelistic out reach programs. 00:12:07.91\00:12:10.77 Not so long going Seattle 00:12:10.80\00:12:12.12 we had 100 evangelistic meetings 00:12:12.15\00:12:15.77 taking place at the same time. 00:12:15.80\00:12:17.99 Recently in Oklahoma, there were about 30 00:12:18.02\00:12:23.71 of the same kinds of meetings, in Guam and Micronesia 00:12:23.74\00:12:27.66 we have about 40 women 00:12:27.69\00:12:29.89 who went out to preach the gospel 00:12:29.92\00:12:31.93 or rather 20 plus women pardon me, 00:12:31.96\00:12:34.32 and in one of those, one of those meetings 00:12:34.35\00:12:36.37 they baptized 43 people. 00:12:36.40\00:12:38.71 So you know it just depends which way you want to look. 00:12:38.74\00:12:42.77 I believe that the North American division 00:12:42.80\00:12:47.99 is a sleeping giant, but the giant is waking up 00:12:48.02\00:12:52.28 and God is gonna bless and prosper, 00:12:52.31\00:12:55.38 the efforts of His people because there are people 00:12:55.41\00:12:58.33 and this is what's exciting to me. 00:12:58.36\00:13:00.40 There are people through out our division 00:13:00.43\00:13:02.90 who are catching the vision, who are saying 00:13:02.93\00:13:05.73 we can do something for God, 00:13:05.76\00:13:07.89 we don't have to be a Mark Finley, 00:13:07.92\00:13:10.90 we don't have to be a great evangelist or a great doctor, 00:13:10.93\00:13:14.35 but we can take simple remedies, 00:13:14.38\00:13:16.34 we can take all-- 00:13:16.37\00:13:17.72 you know the comprehensive heath message, 00:13:17.75\00:13:20.36 we can reach out to our cities. 00:13:20.39\00:13:22.56 We can do it variety of ways 00:13:22.59\00:13:25.02 and they're actually buying into this. 00:13:25.05\00:13:27.64 So I'm praising God. 00:13:27.67\00:13:28.93 Fantastic and I'll join you in that. 00:13:28.96\00:13:31.41 Pastor Jackson, thank you so much for joining us today 00:13:31.44\00:13:33.62 and on behalf of the world church 00:13:33.65\00:13:35.21 I want to thank you 00:13:35.24\00:13:36.35 for what the North American division is doing, 00:13:36.38\00:13:38.12 not just here but in supporting mission all around the world, 00:13:38.15\00:13:41.65 because basically viewers at home, 00:13:41.68\00:13:43.94 mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:13:43.97\00:13:45.95 around the world has been carried on the shoulders 00:13:45.98\00:13:47.78 on the North American division 00:13:47.81\00:13:49.43 that continuous to generously support 00:13:49.46\00:13:51.99 the world filled with its mission offerings. 00:13:52.02\00:13:53.65 Thank you so much.
