Welcome back. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 We're talking about church planting 00:00:02.12\00:00:03.15 and my guest is Pastor Tim Madding. 00:00:03.18\00:00:04.67 Tim, thanks for joining us. 00:00:04.70\00:00:06.58 You're the senior pastor here at Beltsville, 00:00:06.61\00:00:08.83 Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:00:08.86\00:00:10.69 a fairly typical suburban church here in Maryland. 00:00:10.72\00:00:13.92 But you're not exactly a typical pastor, 00:00:13.95\00:00:16.23 because your passion is church planting. 00:00:16.26\00:00:18.16 Right. Where did that come from? 00:00:18.19\00:00:20.22 I started church planting early on in ministry, 00:00:20.25\00:00:22.81 I was a part of a growing church, 00:00:22.84\00:00:24.53 that had out grown its facility, 00:00:24.56\00:00:26.88 we'd gone to two services and the next question was, 00:00:26.91\00:00:29.58 well, what do we do now? 00:00:29.61\00:00:30.66 Do we just stop or do we keep growing 00:00:30.69\00:00:32.09 and so the natural response was, 00:00:32.12\00:00:35.04 was just plant another church, 00:00:35.07\00:00:36.27 let's start another congregation. 00:00:36.30\00:00:37.83 So since then it's just been a part of me. 00:00:37.86\00:00:40.02 Had a chance to re-launch another church, 00:00:40.05\00:00:41.79 which was the same principles of church planting, 00:00:41.82\00:00:44.19 for a church that had decreased and the leadership said, 00:00:44.22\00:00:46.64 we want to, we'd really want it to grow 00:00:46.67\00:00:49.30 and we're able to do that outside of Seattle, 00:00:49.33\00:00:52.10 and so it's just been in my blood ever since. 00:00:52.13\00:00:54.92 Wonderful, so you've actually been in the Pennsylvania region 00:00:54.95\00:00:58.02 and you've been carrying for the ministers 00:00:58.05\00:01:00.09 in that conference, but you felt called to come back 00:01:00.12\00:01:02.57 into church planting. 00:01:02.60\00:01:04.79 Now you're here at Beltsville, you're carrying for the church, 00:01:04.82\00:01:07.81 but you're actually inspiring them 00:01:07.84\00:01:09.52 for further church planting, how do you do that? 00:01:09.55\00:01:11.69 I mean, people come here every Sabbath day, 00:01:11.72\00:01:13.79 they're quite content, they have a nice program going, 00:01:13.82\00:01:17.08 how do you motivate them to church plant? 00:01:17.11\00:01:19.25 Now the good thing is Beltsville, 00:01:19.28\00:01:20.50 much like my very first church, has a great DNA, 00:01:20.53\00:01:23.16 it's very out ward focused, it's evangelism focused, 00:01:23.19\00:01:26.19 they want to be about ministry, 00:01:26.22\00:01:27.80 they don't just want to be about church, coming, 00:01:27.83\00:01:30.99 sitting in a pew, hearing a good music program 00:01:31.02\00:01:33.35 and a good sermon and going home. 00:01:33.38\00:01:34.65 They want to be engaged in mission 00:01:34.68\00:01:36.91 and they've been growing, the church has been growing. 00:01:36.94\00:01:39.42 They've gone to multiple services now 00:01:39.45\00:01:41.19 and so their next question was, what next? 00:01:41.22\00:01:43.79 What should we do next? 00:01:43.82\00:01:45.14 And so when they found out that I was, you know, 00:01:45.17\00:01:47.41 very passionate about church planting 00:01:47.44\00:01:48.97 and wanted to be involved in church planting 00:01:49.00\00:01:50.53 and they felt that was the next step for them, 00:01:50.56\00:01:52.37 it just seemed a perfect blend to make that happen. 00:01:52.40\00:01:55.05 Yeah, so what are your plans here? 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.94 Well, we're looking to, um, originally I was brought on 00:01:57.97\00:02:00.59 to be the church planter, 00:02:00.62\00:02:01.98 to plant a church in Silver Spring, 00:02:02.01\00:02:03.81 but at the same time their lead pastor had retired. 00:02:03.84\00:02:06.94 So they thought it would be best that if I become 00:02:06.97\00:02:09.11 the lead pastor to plant many churches 00:02:09.14\00:02:11.97 and so we're looking to find the new church planter 00:02:12.00\00:02:13.92 to replace us here and, to replace me 00:02:13.95\00:02:16.80 in planting in Silver Spring, 00:02:16.83\00:02:18.74 so we're going to plant a church in Silver Spring, 00:02:18.77\00:02:20.87 we'll take about 50 or 60 people from Beltsville, 00:02:20.90\00:02:23.35 committed people. 00:02:23.38\00:02:25.03 They'll be going as missionaries 00:02:25.06\00:02:26.84 to another community not far from here 00:02:26.87\00:02:29.14 and reaching a segment to the population 00:02:29.17\00:02:31.39 that may not be currently targeted and reached. 00:02:31.42\00:02:34.03 And then as soon as we send them, 00:02:34.06\00:02:35.83 we'll continue the discipleship process here 00:02:35.86\00:02:38.25 to develop new leaders, replace leaders, 00:02:38.28\00:02:40.77 develop new leaders, reach new people 00:02:40.80\00:02:43.17 and then begin the plans 00:02:43.20\00:02:44.54 to plant another church after that. 00:02:44.57\00:02:46.26 And then we hope this could be a continued 00:02:46.29\00:02:48.07 cycle of church planting, to just plant one church 00:02:48.10\00:02:50.54 after another church, after another church. 00:02:50.57\00:02:52.66 Now some of our viewers may not even be familiar 00:02:52.69\00:02:55.24 with the term 'church planting.' 00:02:55.27\00:02:56.53 We're talking about starting new congregations. 00:02:56.56\00:02:58.41 Starting new churches, right. How do you begin this process? 00:02:58.44\00:03:00.44 I mean how do you plant a church? 00:03:00.47\00:03:02.60 Yeah, it's not as easy as it used to be. 00:03:02.63\00:03:05.31 It's a little more complex. 00:03:05.34\00:03:06.44 You have to have a core group of leaders, 00:03:06.47\00:03:08.60 and those core group of leaders really need to be committed 00:03:08.63\00:03:12.00 to the same mission, the same purpose. 00:03:12.03\00:03:14.53 Each church has its own way of doing church, 00:03:14.56\00:03:16.86 its own strategy, its own life, 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.82 we call that the DNA of the church 00:03:18.85\00:03:20.75 and so when you're starting a new congregation, 00:03:20.78\00:03:22.66 a new church or church planting, 00:03:22.69\00:03:24.98 you want to have that core team develop the same DNA. 00:03:25.01\00:03:29.02 So the leader, the church planting pastor 00:03:29.05\00:03:32.29 or the pass sending pastor, whatever, 00:03:32.32\00:03:34.55 works with the core group of people and says, 00:03:34.58\00:03:36.51 why are we here? 00:03:36.54\00:03:37.63 What are we doing? What's our purpose? 00:03:37.66\00:03:40.40 You know, how are we going to be the same or different? 00:03:40.43\00:03:42.84 What's our community likes so that we can reach the people 00:03:42.87\00:03:45.27 in our community and then they work together 00:03:45.35\00:03:47.14 in the united effort to fulfill the mission in that context. 00:03:47.17\00:03:51.38 Wonderful, that makes sense. 00:03:51.41\00:03:52.79 So they come together, they pray together, 00:03:52.82\00:03:56.19 they plant together. 00:03:56.22\00:03:57.91 Then what's the first step? 00:03:57.94\00:03:59.62 Do you preach a series of public meetings? 00:03:59.65\00:04:01.88 Do you make friends in the community, 00:04:01.91\00:04:03.81 what's the process? 00:04:03.84\00:04:04.89 Yeah, there's all different ways of doing that 00:04:04.92\00:04:06.18 and people involved in church planting 00:04:06.21\00:04:08.78 or starting new congregations 00:04:08.81\00:04:09.96 all have different opinions on how to do that 00:04:09.99\00:04:12.20 and I'm not going to be critical of any of them, 00:04:12.23\00:04:14.09 whatever advances the kingdom of God, 00:04:14.12\00:04:15.64 I'm in favor of. 00:04:15.67\00:04:17.27 But I think a huge part 00:04:17.30\00:04:18.78 is developing relationships with community. 00:04:18.81\00:04:20.83 Getting to know who the people are in the community, 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.99 spending time, getting to know people. 00:04:23.02\00:04:25.06 If there's a square or city center, 00:04:25.09\00:04:28.00 spending time there, getting to know people. 00:04:28.03\00:04:29.74 Actually talking with people, or going door to door 00:04:29.77\00:04:32.03 and getting to know what the needs 00:04:32.06\00:04:33.77 and the feelings of the community are, 00:04:33.80\00:04:36.79 developing relationships with the leaders 00:04:36.82\00:04:38.30 in the community, etc. 00:04:38.33\00:04:39.37 So you get a feel for the community. 00:04:39.40\00:04:40.94 And then you can hold the public series of meetings, 00:04:40.97\00:04:45.28 like an evangelistic series, inviting people to that. 00:04:45.31\00:04:48.47 You can do a series of invitations 00:04:48.50\00:04:51.69 where you're inviting people to maybe smaller groups 00:04:51.72\00:04:54.04 or Bible study groups or informational meetings, 00:04:54.07\00:04:57.33 where people are developing relationships through there 00:04:57.36\00:04:59.88 and it's kind of slow start to get going 00:04:59.91\00:05:03.11 and then you launch, launch big. 00:05:03.14\00:05:05.27 Wonderful. Now, Tim-- 00:05:05.30\00:05:07.45 There's a whole lot in that. 00:05:07.48\00:05:09.87 Believe me, there is. 00:05:09.90\00:05:11.39 Um, some people say, well, let's fill up our church first 00:05:11.42\00:05:15.59 before we start thinking about church planting, 00:05:15.62\00:05:17.64 how do you respond to that? 00:05:17.67\00:05:18.89 Well, I think that'll be a wonderful idea 00:05:18.92\00:05:20.75 but it's, for the most part, not working. 00:05:20.78\00:05:23.69 Statistically, to revive a dying church 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.46 is a whole lot harder than starting a new one. 00:05:26.49\00:05:29.87 That was why I left Pennsylvania, 00:05:29.90\00:05:32.00 it's why I left ministerial. 00:05:32.03\00:05:33.35 I loved serving as a ministerial director 00:05:33.38\00:05:35.57 in Pennsylvania, I loved the pastors, 00:05:35.60\00:05:37.07 I loved the people. 00:05:37.10\00:05:38.27 But I realized that there were a lot of churches 00:05:38.30\00:05:41.17 that were really focused on themselves 00:05:41.20\00:05:43.22 and I would try to come along side the pastors, 00:05:43.25\00:05:45.86 and sometimes working with church boards 00:05:45.89\00:05:47.67 and elders and leaders in the church 00:05:47.70\00:05:49.20 that try to help change their church. 00:05:49.23\00:05:51.05 But in reality they didn't want a change. 00:05:51.08\00:05:53.70 They didn't really want to be outreached. 00:05:53.73\00:05:55.34 I mean, I sat down with leaders of churches 00:05:55.37\00:05:57.09 who said, we're happy the way we are, right now, 00:05:57.12\00:06:00.82 we don't want a change. 00:06:00.85\00:06:02.33 But yet there's people in their community 00:06:02.36\00:06:03.68 who don't know Christ, there're people in their community 00:06:03.71\00:06:05.59 they aren't ready for Jesus to come. 00:06:05.62\00:06:07.01 There're people that, they're going to be eternally lost 00:06:07.04\00:06:09.80 and the church is oblivious to that. 00:06:09.83\00:06:12.39 And if we could grow the existing churches, great. 00:06:12.42\00:06:15.60 But that's not necessarily happening 00:06:15.63\00:06:18.16 and when you think about the early Christian church, 00:06:18.19\00:06:22.27 church planting is how they grew. 00:06:22.30\00:06:23.68 They didn't just grow the church in Jerusalem. 00:06:23.71\00:06:25.38 They went out, God even sent them out to the far reaches, 00:06:25.41\00:06:28.27 where they worked in small groups, 00:06:28.30\00:06:31.32 developed new churches and grew from there 00:06:31.35\00:06:33.34 and so church planting was how the church grew, 00:06:33.37\00:06:36.06 it's how they fulfill the mission early on. 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.20 The Seventh-day Adventist church, which we're part of, 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.12 is, began the same way. 00:06:40.15\00:06:41.88 A small group of people, but then they planted it 00:06:41.91\00:06:43.91 intoanother area and planted it into another area 00:06:43.94\00:06:46.00 andsometimes even went across state lines 00:06:46.03\00:06:47.77 and planted even further away. 00:06:47.80\00:06:49.36 That's how they-- 00:06:49.39\00:06:50.77 the advancement of the gospel continued. 00:06:50.80\00:06:52.40 That's how the church grew, was through church planting 00:06:52.43\00:06:55.70 and if we're not growing now may be we need to revive that, 00:06:55.73\00:06:58.54 that emphasis in church planting. 00:06:58.57\00:06:59.84 Not just say those people in those churches 00:06:59.87\00:07:01.31 are bad people or- 00:07:01.34\00:07:02.56 They're wonderful, God fearing, loving people. 00:07:02.59\00:07:06.33 But they're not really focused in their communities. 00:07:06.36\00:07:08.95 Tim, thank you for singing the song of Global Mission, 00:07:08.98\00:07:11.62 planting two congregations and best wishes 00:07:11.65\00:07:14.39 for your initiatives here in this area. 00:07:14.42\00:07:17.11 And let's return now to Pennsylvania, to Simplicity, 00:07:17.14\00:07:20.52 to see what we're talking about in practice. 00:07:20.55\00:07:23.30 Another much needed service here 00:07:23.33\00:07:25.27 is mentoring the children. 00:07:25.30\00:07:26.87 The parents of this community work hard 00:07:26.90\00:07:29.07 and the children have a lot of time alone. 00:07:29.10\00:07:31.53 So Simplicity Missionaries host the children 00:07:31.56\00:07:33.87 on a regular basis so they can learn to use their time wisely. 00:07:33.90\00:07:37.48 The kids like it here so much that they come on their own 00:07:37.51\00:07:40.48 and visit often. 00:07:40.51\00:07:41.67 Here, they play games, they make new friends, 00:07:41.70\00:07:44.36 and they learn about Jesus 00:07:44.39\00:07:45.56 through songs and Bible stories. 00:07:45.59\00:07:47.49 They each come here for different reasons. 00:07:47.52\00:07:50.16 Because it's fun. 00:07:50.19\00:07:52.09 I love learning about Noah and Jesus. 00:07:52.12\00:07:54.97 The activities. 00:07:57.36\00:07:58.61 Because it's fun. 00:07:58.64\00:08:00.44 Because it spread some joy in people life. 00:08:00.47\00:08:05.42 Michelle's children also come to the center. 00:08:05.45\00:08:07.82 For her, Simplicity has been a lifeline. 00:08:07.85\00:08:11.58 She learned about this community center 00:08:11.61\00:08:13.42 when Andrew came by her house to do a survey. 00:08:13.45\00:08:16.12 She was extremely hopeless that day. 00:08:16.15\00:08:18.99 She was at the darkest point 00:08:19.02\00:08:20.68 of the most difficult situation in her life. 00:08:20.71\00:08:23.40 So when Simplicity came to my home, 00:08:23.43\00:08:25.90 I didn't even want to see them. 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.38 They had a list on a piece of paper 00:08:27.41\00:08:29.79 of all these different community services 00:08:29.82\00:08:31.65 that they offered. 00:08:31.68\00:08:32.74 One of them was Bible study, help with your finances, 00:08:32.77\00:08:36.91 that type of thing. 00:08:36.94\00:08:39.72 I signed up, I checked off every one 00:08:39.75\00:08:42.35 and I always wanted to do Bible studies 00:08:42.38\00:08:45.10 but I never had an opportunity so I was interested. 00:08:45.13\00:08:49.89 As she showed interest in the different services, 00:08:49.92\00:08:53.74 Michelle began to open up 00:08:53.77\00:08:55.54 and she felt the positive connection to the missionaries. 00:08:55.57\00:08:58.96 They asked Michelle to pray for her and to her situation. 00:08:58.99\00:09:02.10 Losing her kids to social services 00:09:02.13\00:09:04.50 was a devastating experience. 00:09:04.53\00:09:07.15 It's really hard, you know, losing my kids in a-- 00:09:07.18\00:09:13.86 I actually started to pray. 00:09:13.89\00:09:16.94 I felt this tingling, warm sensation 00:09:16.97\00:09:20.62 come down through the top of my head 00:09:20.65\00:09:22.99 and it hit my neck, 00:09:23.02\00:09:24.49 the hair on my neck stood up. 00:09:24.52\00:09:26.12 All of a sudden I felt happy. 00:09:26.15\00:09:29.42 I had this overwhelming feeling 00:09:29.45\00:09:32.70 that everything was going to be all right, 00:09:32.73\00:09:34.96 that I was going to get my kids back 00:09:34.99\00:09:36.90 and I couldn't shake that feeling. 00:09:36.93\00:09:38.84 Just like I couldn't shake, prior to that, 00:09:38.87\00:09:40.88 the feeling that-- of devastation. 00:09:40.91\00:09:44.26 This feeling took over. 00:09:44.29\00:09:46.50 Now I knew they were-- I was going to get them back. 00:09:46.53\00:09:49.85 Sure enough, miraculously, 00:09:49.88\00:09:51.64 social services returned her kids the very next day. 00:09:51.67\00:09:55.67 They even apologized for the incident. 00:09:55.70\00:09:58.19 Now Michelle just had to learn more about the God 00:09:58.22\00:10:01.05 who could control emotions and solve the hardest problems. 00:10:01.08\00:10:05.35 As she studied the Bible, 00:10:05.38\00:10:07.19 she made important decisions in her life. 00:10:07.22\00:10:09.85 She began to regularly attend events at the center. 00:10:09.88\00:10:12.91 She quit smoking and even began to volunteer. 00:10:12.94\00:10:16.42 As Simplicity Ministry connects with the community 00:10:16.45\00:10:19.81 through different avenues, they genuinely want to help. 00:10:19.84\00:10:22.96 They want to assist in whatever area people need. 00:10:22.99\00:10:26.38 That's what we hope to communicate to the community 00:10:26.41\00:10:28.19 that we're here to help and that we are a people 00:10:28.22\00:10:32.35 who is understanding and that is helpful 00:10:32.38\00:10:35.89 and that really cares about their needs, 00:10:35.92\00:10:39.13 their families and their lives. 00:10:39.16\00:10:40.97 Just be yourself with them. 00:10:41.00\00:10:43.05 Just show them that you really don't want nothing from them. 00:10:43.08\00:10:47.21 That you just came to give them. 00:10:47.24\00:10:49.34 Give your all to them, like that you are really here 00:10:49.37\00:10:52.91 to just to help them, just to do whatever is in your hands, 00:10:52.94\00:10:57.94 in your reach to help and to try to improve their life. 00:10:57.97\00:11:01.88 We work really hard to let people know 00:11:01.91\00:11:03.82 that that we're not in at just to give them a Bible study, 00:11:03.85\00:11:06.62 not just to get something out of them but that we're willing, 00:11:06.65\00:11:09.46 if they need a friend we're willing to stop by, 00:11:09.49\00:11:11.44 you know, a couple, three times a month 00:11:11.47\00:11:12.92 and be friends with them. 00:11:12.95\00:11:14.49 They don't have to, they don't have to, you know, 00:11:14.52\00:11:16.60 get us there under some pretence, 00:11:16.63\00:11:18.23 we're willing to be there for them. 00:11:18.26\00:11:20.29 And of course we love it when we get to study the Bible 00:11:20.32\00:11:22.39 with people, we've got a number of people 00:11:22.42\00:11:23.59 that we've been studying with for a while now 00:11:23.62\00:11:25.52 and so we don't turn that down 00:11:25.55\00:11:28.43 but, we want people to know 00:11:28.46\00:11:30.68 that we're genuinely interested in them. 00:11:30.71\00:11:33.17 Giving Bible studies gives me great joy. 00:11:33.20\00:11:35.58 Because the Bible is God's word to us 00:11:35.61\00:11:39.82 and so in there we find incredible freedom. 00:11:39.85\00:11:44.48 It's like I spoke about, that many people 00:11:44.51\00:11:46.32 they have addictions and they have, they have burdens, 00:11:46.35\00:11:48.41 they have troubles and trials and so in there 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.97 is just the precious peace and assurance that they can find. 00:11:51.00\00:11:54.04 Christ understood people. 00:11:54.07\00:11:57.14 He knew how to befriend and bless. 00:11:57.17\00:12:00.08 The simple acts of kindness speaks sermons 00:12:00.11\00:12:02.60 to the hearts of people who have not yet met God. 00:12:02.63\00:12:05.09 As we establish centers of influence in urban areas, 00:12:05.12\00:12:08.68 please pray that the Holy Spirit 00:12:08.71\00:12:10.58 revives all of Gods missionaries 00:12:10.61\00:12:12.49 to evangelize through our actions. 00:12:12.52\00:12:14.78 We can all play a part in this Simplicity ministry. 00:12:14.81\00:12:19.00 Each year millions of visitors come to the Lincoln memorial, 00:12:19.03\00:12:22.24 here in Washington, D.C. 00:12:22.27\00:12:24.25 and Lincoln once said 00:12:24.28\00:12:25.36 that people who don't show freedom to others 00:12:25.39\00:12:28.00 don't deserve to receive freedom themselves. 00:12:28.03\00:12:30.68 And it raises the question of, what do we do 00:12:30.71\00:12:33.18 with the freedom that God has given us? 00:12:33.21\00:12:35.19 Do we use it to focus on our own needs 00:12:35.22\00:12:37.81 or do we use it to focus on the needs of others? 00:12:37.84\00:12:40.69 Well, I hope you've enjoyed today's 00:12:40.72\00:12:42.54 Global Missions Snapshots. 00:12:42.57\00:12:43.95 As we've looked at mission around the world, 00:12:43.98\00:12:45.76 please remember to pray for front line mission work. 00:12:45.79\00:12:48.68 Pray for the people and places you see on this program. 00:12:48.71\00:12:51.55 Pray for Global Mission pioneers 00:12:51.58\00:12:53.73 who are starting new congregations 00:12:53.76\00:12:55.35 in difficult areas of the world. 00:12:55.38\00:12:57.53 Before we go, I'd like to offer you 00:12:57.56\00:12:59.24 a free Global Mission calendar. 00:12:59.27\00:13:01.69 This calendar is full of faces of mission 00:13:01.72\00:13:03.79 from around the world and it's a daily reminder 00:13:03.82\00:13:06.34 to pray specifically for people to come to know Jesus Christ. 00:13:06.37\00:13:10.79 Well, that's it
