I'm standing in the capital of the United States of America, 00:00:04.43\00:00:07.70 and in this city you'll find monuments and statues 00:00:07.73\00:00:10.96 and memorials and museums 00:00:10.99\00:00:13.37 and many, many administrative offices 00:00:13.40\00:00:15.64 where politicians administrate and govern the country. 00:00:15.67\00:00:19.65 And speaking of governing, on today's program, 00:00:19.68\00:00:22.11 we'll see what happens when followers of Jesus Christ 00:00:22.14\00:00:25.13 let the principles of His kingdom 00:00:25.16\00:00:26.91 govern their lives and make a difference 00:00:26.94\00:00:29.49 in their communities. 00:00:29.52\00:00:30.97 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:34.84\00:00:37.39 Jesus gave us a command, 00:00:37.42\00:00:40.36 He gave us a mission. 00:00:40.39\00:00:43.12 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world," 00:00:43.15\00:00:47.92 telling them of His love. 00:00:47.95\00:00:50.45 This is our mission. This is our global mission. 00:00:50.48\00:00:54.71 In 1910, the League of Nations began. 00:01:00.07\00:01:03.98 The first organization devoted to achieving world wide peace. 00:01:04.01\00:01:08.57 Well, the Second World War proved 00:01:08.60\00:01:10.35 that this was a dismal failure. 00:01:10.38\00:01:12.63 And during that war, Franklin D. Roosevelt 00:01:12.66\00:01:15.23 decided that the world needed another organization 00:01:15.26\00:01:18.56 and in 1945, the United Nations began. 00:01:18.59\00:01:22.75 And through the years the United Nations 00:01:22.78\00:01:24.50 has done some wonderful work. 00:01:24.53\00:01:26.22 But it certainly hasn't achieved world peace. 00:01:26.25\00:01:29.18 When Jesus came to this earth, he demonstrated 00:01:29.21\00:01:32.64 the peace loving principles of God's kingdom. 00:01:32.67\00:01:35.31 As Jesus said, blessed are the peacemakers. 00:01:35.34\00:01:38.92 But we also understand that peace will never be achieved 00:01:38.95\00:01:41.90 fully on this earth. 00:01:41.93\00:01:43.37 We work for it, we pray for it but we realize 00:01:43.40\00:01:45.99 that it's not until Christ's Second Coming 00:01:46.02\00:01:47.84 that true peace will come. 00:01:47.87\00:01:49.63 But as we wait, we are called to lives of service to others 00:01:49.66\00:01:53.13 and let's visit a group of people 00:01:53.16\00:01:55.22 who are following Christ's example in practice. 00:01:55.25\00:01:58.40 Meet Andrew, Carlos, Miriam, Becca and Fernando. 00:01:58.43\00:02:03.07 They think simple 00:02:03.10\00:02:04.66 as they change their neighborhood block, 00:02:04.69\00:02:06.72 one person at a time. 00:02:06.75\00:02:09.02 Simplicity isn't just the name of their Ministry, 00:02:09.05\00:02:12.14 the simple approach they use 00:02:12.17\00:02:14.09 is at the heart of any successful urban outreach. 00:02:14.12\00:02:17.35 Simplicity missionaries survey their community 00:02:17.38\00:02:20.45 to understand them. 00:02:20.48\00:02:22.20 After learning about the neighbors, 00:02:22.23\00:02:24.01 they narrow their attention 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.35 to both sides of their street block. 00:02:25.38\00:02:27.50 The goal is to build life long relationships 00:02:27.53\00:02:30.05 with their immediate neighbors. 00:02:30.08\00:02:31.85 This is a low income area. 00:02:31.88\00:02:34.15 People here work several jobs 00:02:34.18\00:02:35.85 and have little time for family, 00:02:35.88\00:02:37.56 home activities or even house chores. 00:02:37.59\00:02:41.05 So the missionaries lend a helping hand 00:02:41.08\00:02:43.01 and start by making a visible difference. 00:02:43.04\00:02:45.51 I help out with a lot of the clean up 00:02:45.54\00:02:48.27 and that's one of my favorite activities. 00:02:48.30\00:02:51.09 To be out on the street, picking up trash, 00:02:51.12\00:02:53.12 just having people see 00:02:53.15\00:02:54.64 that there's a presence in the community 00:02:54.67\00:02:56.23 that, that cares for the neighborhood. 00:02:56.26\00:02:59.28 And that's actually my favorite method of meeting people. 00:02:59.31\00:03:02.52 We went door to door and asked them 00:03:02.55\00:03:04.10 if they wanted us to, pick up trash from their yard, 00:03:04.13\00:03:07.82 and cut their grass or plant flowers 00:03:07.85\00:03:10.27 and so many of them gave their permission for us to do that. 00:03:10.30\00:03:13.83 And so we've been doing that every week 00:03:13.86\00:03:15.99 and one lady here, on the corner said, 00:03:16.02\00:03:18.38 well, we didn't know if you guys were-- 00:03:18.41\00:03:21.46 who you were or what you were going to do 00:03:21.49\00:03:23.25 but then we saw you out there cleaning up 00:03:23.28\00:03:26.04 and then we knew that, that you were doing a good thing. 00:03:26.07\00:03:29.75 There's other reactions like, 00:03:29.78\00:03:31.56 well, these people are cleaning their community, 00:03:31.59\00:03:34.92 so we should-- we should too. 00:03:34.95\00:03:36.76 And so people have picked up, you know their, rakes, 00:03:36.79\00:03:41.70 their shovels and they said, 00:03:41.73\00:03:43.01 oh, well, we'll take care of our own yard. 00:03:43.04\00:03:45.29 We'll just, we're just going to redo our whole yard. 00:03:45.32\00:03:47.47 One of the neighbors did that. 00:03:47.50\00:03:48.78 We're having to find a way to, 00:03:48.81\00:03:51.21 to let people see our Christianity, 00:03:51.24\00:03:54.08 to see Jesus through our actions. 00:03:54.11\00:03:56.06 What they need to see is that 00:03:56.09\00:03:58.90 despite what culture is telling them, 00:03:58.93\00:04:01.28 what they're seeing on TV, 00:04:01.31\00:04:02.77 what the perceptions are around them, 00:04:02.80\00:04:05.30 that Christianity matters in their lives. 00:04:05.33\00:04:08.44 That, um, that it does bring good to their lives, 00:04:08.47\00:04:13.78 in a tangible way. 00:04:13.81\00:04:15.08 It's obvious to anyone who crosses this street, 00:04:15.11\00:04:18.47 that there is something different here. 00:04:18.50\00:04:20.41 It's clean, it's pretty, it's growing. 00:04:20.44\00:04:24.42 In this community, there are also many immigrants 00:04:24.45\00:04:27.14 who find it difficult to succeed 00:04:27.17\00:04:28.88 due to the language barrier. 00:04:28.91\00:04:30.50 So the missionaries and volunteers 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.75 teach English as a second language. 00:04:32.78\00:04:34.81 One of the teachers, Carlos, is from Mexico, 00:04:39.49\00:04:42.34 and English is new to him. 00:04:42.37\00:04:44.24 He arrived about one and a half years ago. 00:04:44.27\00:04:47.15 Today, he is proficient in the English language 00:04:47.18\00:04:49.67 and is passing down his knowledge. 00:04:49.70\00:04:52.19 Carlos selected the bible as one of his text books. 00:04:52.22\00:04:55.43 He believes in the power of God 00:04:55.46\00:04:57.33 to enable even a mute to speak. 00:04:57.36\00:04:59.50 By using the bible, Carlos empowers his students 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.99 for a life of service with the new language 00:05:03.02\00:05:05.15 they're learning. 00:05:05.18\00:05:06.72 It's beautiful, it's an unforgettable experience, 00:05:09.26\00:05:12.03 to learn how to speak English and at the same time, 00:05:12.06\00:05:14.65 the things of God. 00:05:14.68\00:05:16.23 And I know that it's wise to fear the Lord, 00:05:16.26\00:05:18.31 because He is the one who gives us life. 00:05:18.34\00:05:21.81 As the students become fluent, they receive assistance 00:05:21.84\00:05:24.83 in drafting a career path and finding a job. 00:05:24.86\00:05:27.75 This is a simple program, but it touches people 00:05:27.78\00:05:30.89 where they need most. 00:05:30.92\00:05:32.61 It's like when Jesus healed the blind. 00:05:32.64\00:05:34.88 This is helping people to see and navigate 00:05:34.91\00:05:37.35 in a different culture. 00:05:37.38\00:05:39.12 We'll be traveling back to Pennsylvania 00:05:39.15\00:05:40.73 to learn more about Simplicity in a few minutes. 00:05:40.76\00:05:43.41 But my guest is Pastor Robert Lemon, 00:05:43.44\00:05:45.37 who is the treasurer of the General Conference 00:05:45.40\00:05:47.56 of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:05:47.59\00:05:49.22 Thanks so much for joining us, Bob. 00:05:49.25\00:05:51.10 Now in your work, you're dealing with a lot of funds, 00:05:51.13\00:05:54.83 mission offerings, tithes, et cetera, 00:05:54.86\00:05:56.48 but it's there for a purpose, which is mission. 00:05:56.51\00:05:58.94 Where did you first capture 00:05:58.97\00:06:00.42 your interest and passion for mission? 00:06:00.45\00:06:03.49 Well, I had the privilege 00:06:03.52\00:06:04.60 of being born of missionary parents 00:06:04.63\00:06:06.62 and the, what was at that time, 00:06:06.65\00:06:08.36 the Belgian Congo, later the Congo's I hear, 00:06:08.39\00:06:11.65 the Democratic Republic of Congo, 00:06:11.68\00:06:13.20 so I grew up in the mission field 00:06:13.23\00:06:18.23 and had the privilege of watching my parents, 00:06:18.26\00:06:20.90 then I also went back there with my wife 00:06:20.93\00:06:23.34 and we served for 11 years in the mission field ourselves. 00:06:23.37\00:06:26.71 Now how did it impact you, living and working in Africa? 00:06:26.74\00:06:31.70 Well, it's interesting because people ask 00:06:31.73\00:06:33.34 well, what was it like being born in Africa, 00:06:33.37\00:06:35.17 and I say yeah, well, what was it like 00:06:35.20\00:06:36.37 being born in the United States or anywhere else in the world? 00:06:36.40\00:06:39.23 Ah, for me, that was just life. 00:06:39.26\00:06:41.98 But I had the great privilege of being able to observe 00:06:42.01\00:06:46.27 first hand, different cultures, 00:06:46.30\00:06:48.41 different religious backgrounds, 00:06:48.44\00:06:50.10 individuals being taught Christ's saving grace. 00:06:50.13\00:06:55.08 Coming from various different backgrounds 00:06:55.11\00:06:58.54 and it was a real privilege 00:06:58.57\00:06:59.90 and it's exciting to see people accept the Lord. 00:06:59.93\00:07:02.63 Yeah, now when you go to Africa today, 00:07:02.66\00:07:05.66 you can visit graves of missionaries 00:07:05.69\00:07:09.13 who went to Africa, they never went home, 00:07:09.16\00:07:11.94 they gave their lives. 00:07:11.97\00:07:14.90 Is, is it worth it, I mean, is it worth it, 00:07:14.93\00:07:17.78 the money that is spent, 00:07:17.81\00:07:19.41 the lives that are sacrificed, is it worth it? 00:07:19.44\00:07:23.15 Well, I don't think there's any question, 00:07:23.18\00:07:24.64 it's worth it. 00:07:24.67\00:07:25.75 Certainly, I've visited the graves 00:07:25.78\00:07:27.79 of a number of our missionaries and some of their children. 00:07:27.82\00:07:31.43 You know, in those days, when my folks first went out, 00:07:31.46\00:07:33.56 it was 7 years with no trip home. 00:07:33.59\00:07:36.47 Ah, went by boat and took more than a month to get there. 00:07:36.50\00:07:40.74 Now a days, we want to come back every year 00:07:40.77\00:07:43.39 for a vacation, and to visit the family and all, 00:07:43.42\00:07:46.74 it's very different. 00:07:46.77\00:07:47.80 But times are different but the mission is the same 00:07:47.83\00:07:52.22 and it's certainly worth it. 00:07:52.25\00:07:53.83 If your parents were to come back to Africa today, 00:07:53.86\00:07:57.51 how would it be different from what, when you were a boy? 00:07:57.54\00:08:01.00 The Adventist church, how has it changed? 00:08:01.03\00:08:04.27 Well, in the country where I was born, 00:08:04.30\00:08:07.38 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 00:08:07.41\00:08:11.31 when my parents first went there before I was born, 00:08:11.34\00:08:14.30 we only had about 5,000 Seventh-day Adventists 00:08:14.33\00:08:17.11 in the country 00:08:17.14\00:08:18.43 and now we're up half three quarters of a million people 00:08:18.46\00:08:21.92 in the country, who are Seventh-day Adventists. 00:08:21.95\00:08:23.81 So they would be terribly excited to see 00:08:23.84\00:08:26.99 the growth of the work that they had a part 00:08:27.02\00:08:28.77 in the early stages of. 00:08:28.80\00:08:31.23 So when we look at it, Bob, through prayers, 00:08:31.26\00:08:34.13 through mission service, through financial giving, 00:08:34.16\00:08:37.40 literally millions of lives have been changed 00:08:37.43\00:08:39.32 on the continent of Africa, alone. 00:08:39.35\00:08:41.31 Yes, absolutely. 00:08:41.34\00:08:42.46 Tremendous growth on that continent. 00:08:42.49\00:08:44.83 Now, Bob, when people give their mission offerings, 00:08:44.86\00:08:49.24 when Seventh-day Adventists 00:08:49.27\00:08:50.30 give their mission offerings every week, 00:08:50.33\00:08:52.07 what happens to those funds, just in general terms. 00:08:52.10\00:08:55.47 Most of the mission offerings go into two categories, 00:08:55.50\00:08:59.55 there's the general mission, 00:08:59.58\00:09:00.78 which we take up at our Sabbath School on Saturday morning, 00:09:00.81\00:09:05.50 when we have Sabbath School. 00:09:05.53\00:09:07.24 They go for a wide range of supporting 00:09:07.27\00:09:10.24 various mission programs and missionaries. 00:09:10.27\00:09:13.49 We also have what we call the 13th Sabbath offering, 00:09:13.52\00:09:16.21 which is a special offering once a quarter 00:09:16.24\00:09:18.54 that is more directed at projects, 00:09:18.57\00:09:20.67 more directed at specific items, 00:09:20.70\00:09:24.18 but yet covers a broad range of items. 00:09:24.21\00:09:27.39 And when you look at the 13th Sabbath offerings, 00:09:27.42\00:09:29.57 how is that growing in your time, working in treasury? 00:09:29.60\00:09:34.11 Well, the average quarter now, meaning three months 00:09:34.14\00:09:39.56 for the 13th Sabbath offering is over a million dollars 00:09:39.59\00:09:43.52 and it was only two hundred and some thousand 00:09:43.55\00:09:45.62 when I came here to the General Conference, 00:09:45.65\00:09:47.26 on average. 00:09:47.29\00:09:48.83 But the total mission offering giving around the world, 00:09:48.86\00:09:51.82 not just in North America, but around the world 00:09:51.85\00:09:54.40 has increased multiple folds over the last 20 years. 00:09:54.43\00:09:58.79 Now, Bob, when you look at the challenges 00:09:58.82\00:10:00.73 around the world, and you look at the tithes and offerings 00:10:00.76\00:10:03.64 that the church does receive, what could be accomplished? 00:10:03.67\00:10:06.60 What opportunities are there if we had the funds available? 00:10:06.63\00:10:10.56 Well, you know, half of the world isn't reached yet. 00:10:10.59\00:10:12.92 We tend to talk about the part of the world 00:10:12.95\00:10:14.86 that's been reached, 00:10:14.89\00:10:15.93 the part that we have a lot of Christians in. 00:10:15.96\00:10:19.45 There's no question, if we have far more 00:10:19.48\00:10:22.08 in the way of mission offerings and in the way of tithe, 00:10:22.11\00:10:25.36 we would be able to reach parts of the world 00:10:25.39\00:10:28.36 in ways we've never reached them before. 00:10:28.39\00:10:30.62 With the digital age, but also with people on the ground. 00:10:30.65\00:10:36.02 What gives you most hope as you look to the future, 00:10:36.05\00:10:39.25 when you look at the future of this church, 00:10:39.28\00:10:40.88 I mean, we know the challenges, 00:10:40.91\00:10:42.37 but what brings you the most hope? 00:10:42.40\00:10:45.29 Well, you know, they say that the youth 00:10:45.32\00:10:47.66 is the future of the church, 00:10:47.69\00:10:49.37 it isn't, it's the present of the church. 00:10:49.40\00:10:51.68 Seventh-day Adventist church, if you go back in our history 00:10:51.71\00:10:54.16 was started by very young people, 00:10:54.19\00:10:56.24 would make us look like great grandfathers. 00:10:56.27\00:10:59.80 And our young people are on fire for the Lord, 00:10:59.83\00:11:02.87 I have no question that the church is in good hands. 00:11:02.90\00:11:08.12 I believe that the work is going to be finished quickly. 00:11:08.15\00:11:12.07 So in 2015, there's going to be 00:11:12.10\00:11:13.95 a special General Conference session offering collected, 00:11:13.98\00:11:17.57 what is that money going to go to? 00:11:17.60\00:11:20.77 There's a special offering we take once every 5 years, 00:11:20.80\00:11:23.90 both at the General Conference session 00:11:23.93\00:11:25.62 as well as around the world. 00:11:25.65\00:11:28.05 And all of the funds from the General Conference 00:11:28.08\00:11:30.43 session offering this time, will go for our young people 00:11:30.46\00:11:34.32 to do outreach and to reach people for the Lord. 00:11:34.35\00:11:37.78 Not only will it go for them to do it, 00:11:37.81\00:11:40.35 but the committees that decide 00:11:40.38\00:11:43.27 what projects are to be approved, 00:11:43.30\00:11:45.62 are all to be a majority of young people deciding it. 00:11:45.65\00:11:49.58 That's wonderful, and when you say, young people 00:11:49.61\00:11:51.51 you mean young people, right? 00:11:51.54\00:11:53.52 This is like children and I think 00:11:53.55\00:11:55.57 the maximum is 21 years of age. 00:11:55.60\00:11:57.33 21 and down to 6, 7, 8, 00:11:57.36\00:12:01.31 we want every age to be involved. 00:12:01.34\00:12:03.52 In the decision making 00:12:03.55\00:12:04.66 as well as in the actual use of the funds. 00:12:04.69\00:12:07.48 That's wonderful, I think, I think that young people 00:12:07.51\00:12:09.88 will catch a vision from this. 00:12:09.91\00:12:11.71 Bob, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:12:11.74\00:12:14.33 It's been great. 00:12:14.36\00:12:15.40 And the viewers at home, don't forget to support mission 00:12:15.43\00:12:19.48 not only with your time and your prayers 00:12:19.51\00:12:21.05 but also with your tithes and your mission offerings. 00:12:21.08\00:12:23.25 It does make a, makes a big difference. 00:12:23.28\00:12:25.91 We'll be right back, after this break. 00:12:25.94\00:12:28.09
