Good. Good to see you. 00:01:03.01\00:01:04.46 Good to see you too. 00:01:04.49\00:01:06.04 I'll introduce you real briefly to our viewers today, 00:01:06.07\00:01:10.38 this is Doctor G.T. Ng, the secretary 00:01:10.41\00:01:13.51 of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists 00:01:13.54\00:01:16.24 and this is Myron Iseminger 00:01:16.27\00:01:17.96 who's the undersecretary of the World Church as well. 00:01:17.99\00:01:22.16 And I'm wondering, Doctor Ng, would you tell us 00:01:22.19\00:01:25.75 what is Secretariat? 00:01:25.78\00:01:28.02 What is Secretariat for our viewers? 00:01:28.05\00:01:31.55 Well, that's a term that very few people understand. 00:01:31.58\00:01:35.80 But Secretariat primarily is an organization 00:01:35.83\00:01:38.91 that oversees the missionary activities of the Church 00:01:38.94\00:01:42.49 throughout the world. 00:01:42.52\00:01:43.73 We facilitate, we motivate, 00:01:43.76\00:01:46.37 we do some funding of the mission enterprise 00:01:46.40\00:01:50.12 around the world. 00:01:50.15\00:01:51.48 And this painting here depicts in a nutshell 00:01:51.51\00:01:55.61 the current emphasis of the church 00:01:55.64\00:01:57.41 and that is city evangelism, 00:01:57.44\00:01:59.53 urban mission in major capitals around the world. 00:01:59.56\00:02:04.08 And three angels, 00:02:04.11\00:02:05.99 being multicultural is a depiction of the diversity 00:02:06.02\00:02:12.51 that we see in this church. 00:02:12.54\00:02:14.79 Thank you, Doctor Ng, 00:02:14.82\00:02:16.18 but there is another side of Secretariat, right? 00:02:16.21\00:02:18.43 And Myron, maybe you'll tell us a little bit about 00:02:18.46\00:02:20.95 the other side of Secretariat. 00:02:20.98\00:02:23.95 Well, mission is certainly the most exciting part, 00:02:23.98\00:02:26.78 but somebody has to take care of the policies 00:02:26.81\00:02:30.78 and the minutes and agendas 00:02:30.81\00:02:32.91 and so forth to keep the church running. 00:02:32.94\00:02:35.89 And so that's traditionally also been 00:02:35.92\00:02:38.19 the function of Secretariat, 00:02:38.22\00:02:40.53 membership records and those sorts of things as well. 00:02:40.56\00:02:44.10 Let's go see some of the areas. 00:02:44.13\00:02:45.82 You know there's so much 00:02:45.85\00:02:47.01 involved in mission for the church 00:02:47.04\00:02:49.49 but one of the biggest areas is here 00:02:49.52\00:02:52.48 in the International Personnel Resources and Services, 00:02:52.51\00:02:57.45 otherwise known as IPRS. 00:02:57.48\00:02:58.73 But that's too much, 00:02:58.76\00:03:00.10 but maybe Myron and Dr. Ng, 00:03:00.13\00:03:04.42 would you tell us a little bit about 00:03:04.45\00:03:06.45 what International Personal Resources and Services does? 00:03:06.48\00:03:09.40 Sure, well the name is quite descriptive 00:03:09.43\00:03:11.87 but when we talk about resources and services, 00:03:11.90\00:03:14.77 we're talking about things, treasury functions, 00:03:14.80\00:03:18.76 payroll, and so forth as well as 00:03:18.79\00:03:21.05 all of logistics to get them out into the field. 00:03:21.08\00:03:24.02 Getting who out? 00:03:24.05\00:03:25.50 These are the missionaries. Okay. 00:03:25.53\00:03:28.88 The international personnel. 00:03:28.91\00:03:30.15 And who do they work for largely? 00:03:30.18\00:03:33.81 Obviously they're based in local regions and institutions, 00:03:33.84\00:03:39.77 but they maintain a connection with this office 00:03:39.80\00:03:44.10 because of their cross-cultural work 00:03:44.13\00:03:47.43 and being away from home. 00:03:47.46\00:03:49.05 In this kind of regard, Doctor Ng, 00:03:49.08\00:03:52.67 about how many cross-cultural workers 00:03:52.70\00:03:54.88 these international personnel do we have around the world? 00:03:54.91\00:03:57.68 Roughly 400-- 00:03:57.71\00:04:00.23 Families. Families. Yeah. 00:04:00.26\00:04:01.90 But with wives, spouses working we have close to 900. 00:04:01.93\00:04:06.00 Wonderful, okay, that gives us a good overview. 00:04:06.03\00:04:08.75 Let's sort of go into Adventist Mission. 00:04:08.78\00:04:11.60 You know, in my world 00:04:11.63\00:04:13.56 this is probably the most exciting area, 00:04:13.59\00:04:15.33 this is Adventist Mission. 00:04:15.36\00:04:16.50 That's right. 00:04:16.53\00:04:18.24 I like time here of course there's a lot going on here. 00:04:18.27\00:04:23.27 Maybe you can share with us a little bit about 00:04:23.30\00:04:25.23 what is happening and what kind of things, 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.39 activities and stuff that Adventist Mission is doing? 00:04:28.42\00:04:30.85 Well, Adventist Mission has done a great job 00:04:30.88\00:04:33.79 in advertising or showcasing 00:04:33.82\00:04:37.88 what the church has been doing around the world. 00:04:37.91\00:04:40.88 In terms of magazine, they have the Mission 360 magazine. 00:04:40.91\00:04:44.77 In terms of the mission spotlight DVD, 00:04:44.80\00:04:47.94 so in that regard they've done a great job. 00:04:47.97\00:04:50.97 Wonderful and we, of course, 00:04:51.00\00:04:54.87 in Adventist Mission are sort of the custodians 00:04:54.90\00:04:57.54 for some of the offerings, mission offerings certainly, 00:04:57.57\00:05:01.54 and we're grateful for the fact that the world church 00:05:01.57\00:05:07.23 has an organization that looks after that. 00:05:07.26\00:05:09.28 In fact the Sabbath School Offering 00:05:09.31\00:05:11.59 is the backbone of the funding 00:05:11.62\00:05:16.40 which we finance missionaries around the world. 00:05:16.43\00:05:20.28 Without Sabbath School Mission Offering, 00:05:20.31\00:05:23.16 we are getting nowhere 00:05:23.19\00:05:24.54 but because of the generosity of our people 00:05:24.57\00:05:27.19 contributing on a regular basis 00:05:27.22\00:05:29.07 Sabbath School Mission Offering, 00:05:29.10\00:05:30.91 we can afford to send missionaries around the world. 00:05:30.94\00:05:34.42 And here we are in the Institute of World Mission. 00:05:34.45\00:05:38.41 Tell us, Pastor Iseminger, 00:05:38.44\00:05:40.63 about the Institute and what it does? 00:05:40.66\00:05:43.27 Well, this is one of the best kept secrets 00:05:43.30\00:05:45.74 of the whole mission family area, 00:05:45.77\00:05:48.45 but I think they're best known for their mission institutes 00:05:48.48\00:05:52.40 where they spent three weeks with the missionaries 00:05:52.43\00:05:55.62 that are going out and training them in cross-cultural issues 00:05:55.65\00:06:01.76 and really giving them the preparation 00:06:01.79\00:06:05.00 that they need to step into the other cultures, 00:06:05.03\00:06:07.87 but they do many other things as well 00:06:07.90\00:06:10.84 relating to helping with the divisions 00:06:10.87\00:06:13.69 and local training. 00:06:13.72\00:06:15.54 Institute is a valuable jewel 00:06:15.57\00:06:17.51 in the whole mission structures of the church 00:06:17.54\00:06:21.42 and what we refer to around here as the mission family. 00:06:21.45\00:06:24.46 Let's go on and make sure 00:06:24.49\00:06:26.27 we don't miss the associate secretaries. 00:06:26.30\00:06:28.11 Yes. And Adventist Volunteers. 00:06:28.14\00:06:32.24 I can see, Dr. Ng, 00:06:32.27\00:06:34.27 that there is far too much for one person here. 00:06:34.30\00:06:37.10 You must have some associates that help you in this work? 00:06:37.13\00:06:40.21 Yes, we do have associate secretaries 00:06:40.24\00:06:42.76 whose responsibility is to recruit and interview 00:06:42.79\00:06:49.31 and screen missionaries for cross-cultural situations. 00:06:49.34\00:06:54.10 Okay. 00:06:54.13\00:06:55.33 Unfortunately none of them are around today, 00:06:55.36\00:06:57.95 but they are out there in the field 00:06:57.98\00:07:00.25 doing what they're supposed to do. 00:07:00.28\00:07:01.96 Great and one of those associate secretaries 00:07:01.99\00:07:05.23 is actually responsible for Adventist Volunteers 00:07:05.26\00:07:09.06 and maybe, Elder Iseminger, 00:07:09.09\00:07:11.28 you could you could tell us a little about 00:07:11.31\00:07:14.24 what Adventist Volunteer Services does? 00:07:14.27\00:07:16.79 Sure, we have more volunteers 00:07:16.82\00:07:19.26 than any of the other areas of mission. 00:07:19.29\00:07:21.82 And that's how I got started, 00:07:21.85\00:07:23.98 so I have a real passion for that as well. 00:07:24.01\00:07:27.24 Volunteers spend anytime you know 00:07:27.27\00:07:30.52 from just a few months to up to a year or two 00:07:30.55\00:07:33.41 and they go out to various tasks. 00:07:33.44\00:07:36.61 Many of them are young people 00:07:36.64\00:07:38.01 but they go clear up to retirees and others. 00:07:38.04\00:07:41.03 And any of our viewers could go to the website and sign up. 00:07:41.06\00:07:46.92 Thank you for your time today, Dr. Ng and Pastor Iseminger. 00:07:46.95\00:07:52.23 It's been really nice to see what the mission family does. 00:07:52.26\00:07:56.01 Is there anything more you want to share with me? 00:07:56.04\00:07:58.31 Well, the church is about mission. 00:07:58.34\00:08:01.60 The reason for the church to exist 00:08:01.63\00:08:04.58 is because there is a job to do 00:08:04.61\00:08:07.05 and this is part and parcel of the Great Commission 00:08:07.08\00:08:10.94 that Jesus has given to us. 00:08:10.97\00:08:13.25 What you see here in this office 00:08:13.28\00:08:14.53 is but a skeleton crew 00:08:14.56\00:08:17.16 here at the General Conference office 00:08:17.19\00:08:19.74 overseeing the work of mission around the world. 00:08:19.77\00:08:22.38 The majority of our workers are on the ground, 00:08:22.41\00:08:26.46 different parts of the world, different areas of the world 00:08:26.49\00:08:29.65 where cross-cultural ministry is taking place. 00:08:29.68\00:08:32.58 Thank you so much for your time 00:08:32.61\00:08:34.30 and for showing us around the mission family 00:08:34.33\00:08:36.93 here at the General Conference, 00:08:36.96\00:08:39.42 but you know you really don't have to work 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.69 at the General Conference to be a missionary. 00:08:41.72\00:08:44.10 You can be a missionary right there in your home, 00:08:44.13\00:08:46.26 in your work, in your own family, 00:08:46.29\00:08:48.64 maybe in your community, 00:08:48.67\00:08:50.12 or on the other side of the world. 00:08:50.15\00:08:53.04 Whatever you do, we are called 00:08:53.07\00:08:55.87 to be Christ's representatives in our world. 00:08:55.90\00:08:58.70 Back to you, Gary. 00:08:58.73\00:09:00.59 And so last, but not least, 00:09:00.62\00:09:02.42 we come to the Ellen G.
